Connections - Association, Liaison, Relevance, Attachment, Relationship

Another wonderful bonus of Arabian racing, besides the joy of watching and nurturing these incredible animals, is meeting and connecting with so many others with similar interests around the world. Luckily, our Arabian racing world encourages connecting, and unlike the Thoroughbred world, Arabians have the availability of incredible DNA from many excellent crosses due to frozen and transportable semen and artificial insemination.

The ability to follow your racehorse from state to state, and country to country, opens so many opportunities. We can purchase, sell, race, breed and join in Awards and fun due to our equestrian connections.

In the same fashion, the annual Darley Awards is a fabulous springboard to success. In this social scene, that has shifted from hotel and racetrack conference halls to Hollywood red carpet and back. We connect and rejoice with friends around the world to celebrate the best of the past year’s racing Arabians in the U.S. Horses that win a Darley Award, now in its 36th year, traditionally have been sought after as champions and champion makers. The Stallion Guide is supported by our connections, and we love to share your stories and your awards.

We have themed this issue to help answer the ongoing and obvious question, “Which stallions might best make a Champion?” The Darley Awards do make a positive point with the answer, and with statistics, details and top stallions within these pages, we hope you will find the answers you need. Reach out to the experts in the A-List and find positive energy in this issue. There is a lot to share in our connections.

For close to 50 years, Hughes Performance Arabians has prided itself on successfully breeding athletic horses with strong proven flat track racing and endurance blood lines. The focus of our breeding program is to produce purebred Arabian horses that demonstrate the characteristics of this elite class – optimum size, type, correct conformation, trainability and the great disposition they are known for.

For many years, our Arabians have successfully participated in a broad range of endurance events, including flat track racing. As a breeder, there is hardly an emotion that can eclipse the thrill, the excitement and the pride we feel when we witness one of our horses cross the finish line in first place. As horse lovers, not only do we feel privileged to share the companionship and kindness of our horses, but we also are humbled by their great heart and their determination shown in athletic endeavours.

How Are Darley Winners Determined?

The Arabian Racing Cup is governed by the Board of Stewards. The Darley Committee of the Board of Stewards selects the nominees for Darley Awards and a Voting Academy decides the winners. The Voting Academy is comprised of knowledgeable individuals within the racing community.

WAHO CONFERENCE 2022

poned WAHO Conference which was generously hosted by the Royal Jordanian Equestrian Federation with the support of HM King Abdullah II.

We were warmly welcomed by HRH Princess Alia bint Hussain, familiar to many as a long standing ECAHO judge and a champion of animal welfare. To appreciate some of her work on welfare, check out the Al Ma’wa Centre for Nature and Wildlife, (www. almawajordan.org) to see the rescued bears and lions, which was such a highlight of the Conference tours.

For some people, WAHO is of little interest and others even question its validity, but this is failing to appreciate the work that has been done to bring together the world’s stud books and the almost impossible task of reaching an agreement for a definition for the Arabian horse: “A Purebred Arabian horse is one which appears in any purebred Arabian Stud Book or Register listed by WAHO as acceptable.” This enables all breeders in member countries to register, import and export one another’s horses with ease no matter what bloodlines they believe in.

WAHO holds a biennial Conference, where its main business is to meet with and receive the Registrars’ reports and update all members on WAHO business since the last Conference. It also invites expert speakers who make presentations on a variety of topics while special doors are opened to view private studs and places of interest in the host country. Members have enjoyed some remarkable experiences over the years in such countries as Oman, Syria, Bahrain, Australia and Poland. The opportunity to meet people and experience Arabian horse culture from all over the world make each WAHO Conference unique and well worth attending for anyone with a serious interest in the Arabian horse.

Founded in 1970, the World Arabian Horse Organization (WAHO) is a registered charity with its headquarters in the United Kingdom. There are now 82 countries affiliated to WAHO as Registering Authority Members, either in their own right or in the care of a neighbouring studbook authority, together with two applying member countries. WAHO has the responsibility of ensuring that standards acceptable to all Registering Authority Members are established and maintained in the matters of regulations, methods of registration and production of Stud Books.

Topics of Discussion

One of the recurring topics for debate in the main meeting has been the use of various modern reproduction techniques and the narrowing effects they could have on the genetic material of our horses. WAHO as far as it can, takes a conservative view and such things as cloning are strictly forbidden. Limitations on embryo transfer numbers also frequently comes up, and France has taken the step of limiting registration to one embryo and one naturally carried foal per year. It remains to be seen what effect this can have other than the donor mare being moved to another country. However, the principle was largely supported by the floor, reflecting the concerns serious breeders have on over production and the heavy use of a very small number of stallions in a world

where demand for Arabians is diminishing and welfare becomes an issue.

Guest speakers included Peter Upton talking about The Jordanian Royal Stables while Gudrun Waiditschka (In the Focus magazine), Astrid von Velsen-Zerweck (Marbach Stud, Germany) and I gave presentations on Royal, State and Government Studs and Stables, Their Past, Present and Future. Rather a large subject to be squeezed into the timeframe, but which provided much food for post talk discussion and possibly a more in-depth production at some future date. My presentation ranged through the fascinating history of Arabians in the 16th Century courts of the Moguls, the Safavids and the Ottomans to the Arabians used in remount stables after the two world wars to the present day in University Studs of Cal Poly and Michigan State.

Additional Experiences

In the Middle East, hospitality and food often provide enduring memories, and we experienced this to the full, with an evening parade of Jordanian Breeders’ horses and a ringside buffet, a night

of Circassian folk dancing accompanied by their special cuisine and the final Gala dinner with another impressive Circassian dance troupe. Jordan provides sanctuary to many refugees from surrounding countries, and they have greatly enriched the color and culture of the country.

One of the most anticipated post-conference events was the visit to The Jordanian Royal Stables. It would be hard to come up with a better way of spending time; a fascinating parade of their mare family groups, followed by a wonderful lunch served under the shade of the trees around the arena in the company of the most distinguished and beautiful mares who were turned loose for us to admire as we dined.

The Jordan Conference with its hospitality and old-world charm fully lived up to expectations, and we thank our generous hosts. The next conference will be held in Abu Dhabi in February, 2025. I strongly recommend saving the pennies to attend as it is likely to be another never to be forgotten experience.

The Magnificent Monarch AH

As I write this, Monarch AH is still alive at a remarkable 35 (36 in 2023) years of age. I saw him last summer and although he looked a very old man, his eyes were bright, and he obviously had a strong will to live as he searched my pockets for the dates which he can easily chew.

Monarch arrived in to Wrsan Stables twenty-two years ago along with the cream of the Magness Arabian herd fulfilling a dream of the late Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed al Nahyan, at the time Deputy President of the UAE, to own this superstar sire.

Racing in the U.S.

Monarch is surely unique in being sold not once but twice with his own herd of mares. He was bred in USA in 1987 by the philanthropist billionaire Dr. Armand Hammer in whose name his race career took off. After Hammer’s death, cable cowboy, Bob Magness, with his wife Sharon, who had been closely following Monarch’s very promising career, were quick to offer for him. However, the deal involved taking on the 79 Armand Hammer herd as well. Nevertheless, the deal was done.

Monarch continued to race for Magness Arabians, ending up with a total record of 23(19-3-0)14-3, Darley Champion 3-year-old, Darley Champion 4-year-old and Racehorse of the Year.

Impressive Sire Record

He retired to stud in 1993 and by 1999 took over Leading Sire from his own sire Wiking. It was a title he retained for three years until he left the USA when he progressed to Leading Broodmare Sire. He was also the first Arabian stallion in USA to have progeny win over $1,000,000 in a single season.

Meanwhile, very sadly Bob Magness had passed away and Sharon decided that Magness Arabians had nothing left to prove. It was time for Monarch to travel to pastures new, or rather, return to the desert of his ancestors. Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed al Nahyan had been waiting for this opportunity and had no hesitation in bringing Monarch to Abu Dhabi. But once more, the sale included Magness broodmares and Monarch’s sons and daughters. In total, 120 horses flew into Abu Dhabi putting Wrsan Stables firmly on the map.

Monarch’s pedigree represents the elite of Polish racing bloodlines. His sire was the legendary Wiking, and his dam Sasanka, a granddaughter of Sabellina, was a Triple Crown winner in Poland as well as an outstanding broodmare. Monarch, Wiking and Sasanka are all in the U.S. Arabian Racing Hall of Fame.

Before he left the U.S., Monarch had produced four Darley Champions, Winning Spirit MA, Royal Atheena, Bellaa and HF Ontario. In UAE he produced a succession of winners including Dhuha W’rsan, a leading UAE bred filly, Yakoota W’rsan, Jadhebeh W’rsan GRP Marudda Ghantoot, You Snooze Ulose, Qassam W’rsan, etc. His daughters have been valued broodmares both in the U.S. and UAE.

Monarch AH produce have also been very successful in the sport horse field. At the ECAHO European Sport Horse Champions, Al Khattar W’rsan, Al Mijlas W’rsan and Muteeaa W’rsan all brought home Gold medals. In the U.S. he has had similar success.

A Living Legend

For Sheikh Sultan, Monarch represented the true Arabian horse, having good looks, proven athletic ability and a wonderful temperament which he passed on to his progeny. Monarch’s thirtieth birthday was celebrated with an international guest list guests including Marek Trela of Janus Stud and Shirley and Charlie Watts. It was a very special day. who fulfilled the dreams of all three of his owners, and it is fitting he is memorialized by the outstanding life-sized sculpture in the heart of his final home Wrsan Farm.

Deidre Hyde’s Influence

Deirdre Hyde has had a lifelong involvement with the Arabian horse. Early on, she became closely involved with the Arab Horse Society of Great Britain, at various times being chair of the General Purposes Committee, co-opted onto the Stud Book and Registration Committee, a Steward for AHS racing and for a brief period, AHS Honorary Secretary.

In 1992, Deirdre took up a position as Stud Manager of the Royal Stables of Abu Dhabi for The President of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan. Then in 2000, she joined HH Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan working closely with him to build his Wr-

san Stables, developing a breeding program for Monarch AH and his band of mares. In 2018, Deirdre started working as Consultant to Emirates Arabian Horse Society, which continues to this day. Meanwhile in 2020, she decided to return to UK when Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum asked her to join his Shadwell Arabians as pedigree consultant. Unfortunately, following his untimely death and the dispersal of his Arabians, this ended in 2022.

Deirdre’s work has given her a unique opportunity to see and study Arabians all over the world. She is an Arab Horse Society judge and on the ECAHO ‘A’ judges list, a member of the ECAHO Judges Instructor Group and a member of the AHS Registrations Committee.

Deirdre has contributed numerous articles to Arabian magazines and publications and is now a freelance Arabian horse consultant.

Creating Winners for Cre Run Farm

Deborah Mihaloff was thrilled to get her first horse, Smokey, a grey Half-Arabian and Half-Quarter Horse, when she was 17. Soon her enthusiasm led her to purchase a purebred Arabian mare, and she began breeding her own horses in Michigan for the show ring.

In 1986, Deborah and her husband, Alan Kirshner, built their Arabian breeding farm, Cre Run, in Montpelier, Virginia. For thirty years, while supporting Arabian racing at Delaware Park Racetrack, Cre Run bred top runners that have raced under the bright green with purple and white striped colors with national and international success.

Mihaloff comments, “I have always felt that the Arabian horse should not only exemplify the Arabian type but also athletic ability. It does and is truly the versatile breed. I have always been proud of the Arabian type I have kept in my horses.

Cre Run Phase One

In 1980, when she wished to insure her newly purchased Arabian mare, she asked the Rhulen Insurance Agency if she could place the coverage and receive a commission since she was working in her father’s insurance office. They declined. Mihaloff, not to be thwarted, went to London where she convinced underwriters to give the Arabian breed its own rate status instead of classifying it as a miscellaneous breed. She would meet Alan Kirshner and Tony Markel on that trip and would develop the equine program for Markel. Working with Markel Corporation, a fifty-year-old specialty insurance brokerage firm located in Richmond, Virginia, Deb developed risk management programs with the help of equine veterinarians and insurance agents. As her insurance goals focused, she became the first woman to write equine insurance in the burgeoning Middle Eastern Arabian horse market.

“My research of pedigrees came naturally from learning blood lines before I began breeding. Once I started insuring horses for Markel, it allowed me the opportunity to visit farms all over the world and see horses up close and personal. I learned their faults and assets and would later use that knowledge in my own breeding program. It was such an advantage to see all those old lines.

“My breeding career started with Arabian show horses, and each was chosen for its athletic ability with the hopes of one day racing those lines. We had a Pure Polish mare, a Straight Egyptian mare and a domestic mare.

“The first success would come with MHF Eclipse (1987), my foundation sire. When we began Mi Hal Of Fame Arabian Stud (MHF), my mother and I bred him. He would later set the track record at Los Alamitos for 6 furlongs, until Unchained Melody would break it. I attribute that to both of them being of the Egyptian bloodlines of Moniet El Nefous.

“Then the USA was invaded with French Bloodlines that were bred for distance. My program needed to change, and I slowly started using a few of the French bloodlines. I did not like the

temperament nor the front legs on many of them, but it was giving me distance.”

Cre Run Phase Two

“When you make a major change in a breeding program, such as changing from running route to sprint or vice versa, you need to take into account the broodmare band that you have collected,” continued Mihaloff. “It takes time to change and is costly. You need to learn what ‘nicks’ and what doesn’t. This takes time, even harder for us since we don’t race until they are three years of age.

“So Thoroughbred breeders get a year sooner to figure this out, but we have other advantages that the Thoroughbred breeders don’t have. We have the ability to use frozen semen and the use of artificial insemination. The other great advantage Arabian breeders have over Thoroughbred breeders is the use of embryo transfers. Cre Run was the first race farm in the USA to use some of this technology.

“After the French lines came the Burning Sand influence, and races went back down to sprint distances. Again the program had to change, so I went for Dahess. I thought by using him - since he had won going short or long - I would strengthen the Egyptian blood in some of my lines and bring speed to others. I got my speed and a quick turn of foot.”

In spite of winning 26 Darley Awards with champions such as Royal Atheena, DA Adios, Our Princess, Don Condare, Our

Machine, Flaming Tron Ku, Our Machine, Our Princess, Thess Is Awesome and First Classs, Mihaloff decided that 2018 would be their last breeding year. As of 2022, Cre Run estimates that with U.S. and international prize money, their horses have earned just over $4 million USD.

“When Delaware Park was not being supported by the horsemen in the U.S., and Delaware quit running Arabian races, it gave us the opportunity to rethink our program. In order to prove what I always believed our horses were capable of doing, we would need to go over to the Middle East or to France. To start up an international string of race horses is expensive, and therefore our decision to lease First Classs made sense.”

First Classs

Winner of the 2020 Darley Award for 3-Year-Old Award Colt/Gelding, First Classs (Dahess x Topoftheclass, by Genuine Monarch) was bred to be first class.

Mihaloff continued,

“If you look at the bottom side of First Classs’s pedigree you will see *Sambor, known in this country as a show horse, but he had a very successful racing career in Poland (3/14(6-4-1)). He was a very handsome individual with tremendous bone and substance. I fell in love with him the day I saw him and knew I wanted his blood. On the dam’s side, *Sambor is the sire of Top Star (3/19(26-1)) who I considered to be one of the most beautiful race mares of all time. And of course you have Monarch AH (3/23(19-30)), the perfect mile and a quarter runner. You add in By Golly (4/33(15-9-1)), the sire of Top Of The Line (3/23(6-3-6)) who was a truly great route horse into the mix, and you get a beautiful combination of sprint and route capability, and you keep your Arabian type.”

According to data regarding recent purebred Arabian dam race earnings from <https://arabian.horseracing.tools>, Topoftheclass leads in offspring earnings with First Classs and Iridesse earning 1,930,054 Euros.

In his first year of racing in the U.S. as a 3-year-old, First Classs had 3 wins and 1 second out of 5 starts.

A Leasing Opportunity

First Classs was then leased to Mr. Nasser Al Kaabi of Noora Racing. Mihaloff explains, “I was contacted by Eric Moreau-Sipiere in 2020, at the end of First Classs’s 3-year-old race season about a lease for him to run in the Middle East. It was at that time I knew I needed to prove the program internationally, and we felt First Classs was capable of doing that.

“Classs didn’t have a win in the first year of the lease, so I extended it. I felt that my partner had confidence in the horse and didn’t push him, and I wanted to make the deal a good one for all. Our trainer made some minor adjustments, and we got jockey Ronan Thomas on him and he excelled by winning the Qatar International Arabian Derby in December of his 4-year-old year.

“One of the conditions of the lease was to have Alban de Meuille as the trainer who I feel is one of the best trainers in the world. Since Alban can no longer train Classs due to his contract with the Emir, we are fortunate to have Alban’s nephew, Jean de Mieulle, train for us now in France where the horse is stabled. He was training Classs when he won the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown.”

First Classs is the son of the talented Dahess, who needs no introduction. Cre Run was proud to represent Dahess in the U.S. for many years. Dahess was also trained by Alban De Mieulle, and while doing so won six Group 1PA races and later to set the record for the highest-priced Arabian to be sold at the Arqana Purebred Arabian sale when purchased for €1,050,000 in 2007.

In 2021, First Classs had 10 races after he went to Doha, with a record that year of 8(1-2-4). Then, in his second race in February, 2022, Classs showed his heels to the international competition beating leader Soko to finish two lengths in front in the Saudi Cup weekend’s $1 million LPA inaugural Al Mneefah Cup at 2100m on turf. He then went on to win the Gr 1 $1,000,000 Dubai Kahayla Classic in March on sand going 2,000 meters. He capped the year off by winning the Gr 1 $1,361,000 Jewel Crown in Abu Dhabi in November on turf going a distance of 2200m.

Mihaloff’s New Direction

“My success has reached new heights with First Classs, both statistically and in regards to my breeding program. It could not have happened if it weren’t for all the people who have had confidence in this horse and our breeding program over the years. Classs is a very special horse we have been blessed with.

“People ask why he was gelded. We wanted to give him the best possible opportunity to prove the Cre Run breeding program to the world, and he has done so. You can profit with a gelding, and they are easier to maintain. They stay focused on the job, which is to run, and he loves doing just that. He is truly an ambassador

for Arabian racing. He has had four different trainers from three different countries, numerous jockeys, has run all over the world and has won million dollar races in three different countries doing different distances on different surfaces. Truly he exemplifies what the Arabian breed is most known for and that is being the versatile breed.

“Classs was gelded early on as he was a tough horse, but we have two full sisters, Iridesse and Taylors Touchof Class. Touch will be bred for the first time this year in 2023. Iridesse is in Dubai with trainer Ernst Oertel and was sent there for the same reasons we leased out First Classs. We aren’t racing for classic distance in the U.S. anymore, and both First Classs and Iridesse are distance runners,” she explained.

Mihaloff confirms that Iridesse will stay under Oertel’s care, and it will be up to him how her program goes from here. She also has another horse, Winds Of Fortune, that she plans to lease in a similar format once he makes his first start.

“I have always bred for endurance even with sprint lines. Eclipse is one of those horses with both, and he was my foundation. He sired Ali Eclipse who finished second and Best Condition at Tevis

with Heather Reynolds. I have always wanted a horse to do Tevis, especially since that is my market place for horses after racing; to sell them to the endurance world. We have bred many endurance winners that had been race horses. The recent winner, Treasured Moments (DA Adios+/ x Hidden Treasure), winner at the track, 2017 Haggin Cup and 2021 Tevis Cup winner is only one of many. Hopefully she will go to the Middle East for the FEI World Endurance Championship to be held in 2023. I would have to say we are probably one of the top three centers in the USA for breeding successful endurance horses.”

Cre Run Phase Three

“With the success of First Classs, we have bred his mother back to Dahess and bred the wonderful mare Our Princess to Al Mamun Monlau,” said Mihaloff. “I fell in love with this horse when I saw him run as a 3-year old in Paris. I took pictures of him then and after studying them, I thought what a magnificent animal and knew then that I would breed to him.

“We are very fortunate because our broodmare band is exceptional and proven. We have the ability to breed to many different stallions, and none of our lines have any Burning Sand blood in them so are a perfect outcross.”

To be considered for the Racing Hall of Fame, the horse shall have made a significant contribution to Arabian racing in the United States through the horses own performance and the performance of its progeny.

Requirements

Mares will have had to race for three years with at least three stakes wins, and foaled at least three stakes winners and be retired from racing for five years.

Stallions will have had to race for three years with at least three stakes wins having sired at least five stakes winners and retired from racing for at least five years.

To be considered for the Racing Tent of Honor, the person nominated shall meet the criteria of length of service to the breed, courage to do what is best for the horse, be above reproach, devote to the horse and community and provide service in the areas of leadership, heritage, education, and/or research.

Requirements

An individual, as an owner, breeder or “doer”, will have fifteen years in the Arabian horse industry having raced 10 years.

Dr. Mohammad Al Nujaifi is an Iraqi businessman and historian of Arab Islamic and Middle East history with a Doctorate in Agriculture from Oxford University. He is also a passionate breeder of Arabian horses. His love of the original Arabian Iraqi horse and his zeal to preserve their heritage has led him on the journey to nurture and continue this ancient breed. His reward has been success with his dynamic breeding in the Arabian racing world.

The British brought their love of horse racing to Iraq in the early 1900s, building four race courses which began racing in 1920. Today, formal racing continues only at the Baghdad Equestrian Club at distances up to 1½ miles in the season running from September to July.

Dr. Al Nujaifi continued his family’s breeding of ancient Arabian horse strains in Iraq, but with the political upheaval, he moved many of his top horses to Europe. There, they benefited from the green grass, open pastures and availability to more racing exposure. Breeders premiums in the French races that almost doubled the prize money were an added incentive.

Val Bunting has been associated with Dr Nujaifi for more than 28 years and has expanded the Iraqi breeding lines with the use of French blood. She has also purchased many good French horses that were exported for Dr Nujaifi’s breeding program in Iraq. Bunting is in charge of the breeding and racing operations in Europe and in charge of marketing the horses and promoting the stallions. Now in her third generation of breeding the Nujaifi horses in France,

Bunting manages breeding and racing decisions, and her long experience is invaluable working in consultation with Dr Nujaifi, his trainers and his son Zaid. At the 2018 Darley Awards in Hollywood, Bunting was awarded the coveted, Lifetime Achievement Award.

Al Nujaifi Racing Success

The senior broodmare in the Al Nujaifi breeding program is HAMIYA 2004 (Al Hasim x Al Qatar). Bred and raced in Iraq, Hamiya quickly proved herself adept at the track, winning Gr 1 and numerous other races. She brings the strength of Manganate through her sire, Al Hasim, by Saut Du Loup (Manganate).

Al Nahyan, Al Shamoos won and placed in eight group races with three Gr 1 wins. These included the Qatar Trophy des Juments at Paris Longchamp, the Qatar Cup Prix Dragon at Paris Longchamp, and then the AED 5,000,000 (approx $1.36 Million) Gr 1 Jewel Crown in Abu Dhabi. Dr Nujaifi was awarded the France Galop Arabian Breeders award that year. Al Shamoos is now retired to the breeding barn and has produced two foals.

MUNEERA 2013 by (Dormane x Hamiya) She raced in France and Spain from 2016-2018 where she won and placed in seven group races including winning the prestigious Gr 1 Trophy des Juments (4-years-old) at Chantilly. At the 2018 Darley Awards in Hollywood, she won the International Champion Four-Year-Old Filly. She is now retired to the breeding barn and has produced three foals.

AMIR AL ZAMAN, the 2016 son of Hamiya by Hilal Al Zaman, now a young stallion, unfortunately was injured early in his career after winning one race. His ability was without doubt, and he is a big, correct and very good-looking horse. He is standing at stud in Rome, Italy. His first foals are due in 2023.

In 2007, GHARRA’A by Matador was the champion in waiting. Bred in Iraq, Gharra’a is by the Russian Derby winner

Matador by the incomparable Drug, celebrated for his versatility at top-level shows as well as the racetrack. Gharra’s dam was the important Iraqi-bred Wadha Al Thania of the Seglawieh Jedranieh strain.

Winner in 2013 of two Gr 2 races in Istanbul, Turkey and La Teste de Buch, France, she placed multiple time in Gr 1 races. Gharraa is now a broodmare of distinction within the breeding program, having already produced two Group winners. In 2013, the Iraqi Horse Organization awarded her the WAHO Trophy.

Gharra’a progeny includes the handsome bay 2019 AL GHADEER, by Al Mourtajez, by Dahess. He is the winner of three 2022 Gr 1 races in Deauville, Saint Cloud, and the 2000m €100,000 Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains Derby in Qatar. He was awarded the 2022 France Galop International Champion Three-Year-Old, and Dr. Nujaifi received the SW France Arabian Breeders Award for him. One to watch, Al Ghadheer’s career should prove exciting.

Born in 2017, GHURAT AL ZAMAN is a chestnut mare out of Gharra’a by Hilal Al Zaman. She raced in Italy and France, winning Gr 2 and Gr 3 races with three places in Gr 1. She was retired to the breeding barn in 2023.

A lovely prospect to watch, NADIR AL ZAMAN 2021 (Hilal Al Zaman x Gharraa), is a well-built chestnut and a very interesting colt for the future. He is full brother to the mare Ghurat Al Zaman, and very importantly, half-brother to the Champion Three-Year-Old Al Ghadeer.

This brings us to HILAL AL ZAMAN 2005 (Mencour x Amal Althania, by Zad Al Rakib). This striking chestnut stallion is of the Seglawieh Jedranieh strain. He was bred in Iraq and is by the imported stallion Mencour out of Amal

Althania, a mare of 50% old Iraqi bloodlines and 50% British lines having two crosses to the imported stallion Valiant Gold. Mencour is maternal half-brother to Dormane. Hilal Al Zaman raced for six years and then retired 100% sound in 2011.

In Iraq, he won the Iraq Derby as a 3- and a 4-year-old with a win total of 12 races and 3 seconds out of 15 starts. *Race Record Europe and Iraq: 5/34 (17-12-2-1)7. Total prize money: 240,000€ *Arabian Jockey Club

That same year, the Iraqi Horse Organization awarded him the 2009 WAHO Trophy. In France, he won five races, including the Gr 1 Malzagirt Trophy in Istanbul, then the Gr 1 Zabeel Stakes in Newbury, UK. His race record is 20(5-8-3). His proven progeny represent black-type winners.

in, and he rapidly improved. Now at five years of age, he is over 16H (157cm) and has a winning personality and a focus to be first in the line of running horses.

GHURAT AL ZAMAN 2017, out of Gharraa, also began her career in 2021. Trained by Endo Botti in Italy, she quickly won a Gr 3 2000m race in Rome and group-placed in Pisa, before moving on to France. In 2022, with trainer Damien Watrigant, she won the May, Gr 3 Prix Damas at Bordeaux Le Bouscat, then three weeks later won the 2000m Gr 2 Qatar Prix de l’Elvage at Toulouse.

GHAZI AL ZAMAN 2018, out of Ghazwa. This bay colt was started in Italy with Endo Botti where he won two races. In France, he is in his second year of racing. He is trained by Damien Watrigant with a win at Tarbes and Group-placed at Toulouse.

DURAT AL ZAMAN 2015, out of Gharraa. A lovely grey, this full sister to Ghurat Al Zaman has won and placed, including a fourth place in the Trophy des Juments Gr 1 at Paris Longchamp. She is now a broodmare with her first foal due in 2023.

HIAB AL ZAMAN raced in the USA from 2021-2022. In just two seasons of racing, he won 6 out of 10 races, including the Gr 1 $100,000 UAE President Cup at Pimlico Race Track. He then placed in a Texas Gr 3 then won the Gr 3 Arabian Stallion Stakes.

In 2022, Hiab was awarded the USA Darley Award FourYear-Old Champion Colt and also the USA Darley Horse of the Year for the 2021 season. He is nominated for the Darley Award for 2022 Darley Older Horse. He was exported to the UAE in 2022.

This miracle colt almost died a few hours after he was born as he had fallen down, perhaps hitting a wall, and suffered severe injuries. Luckily breeders, DVM James Meyer and Susan Meyer, were quickly there and hand nursed him for weeks on a 24 hour care schedule. His will to survive kicked

HILAL AL CHAM 2016, out of Ya Hala by Azadi. This colt is being trained by Thomas Fourcy for Al Shaqab Racing. *He has won and placed in two races in France in 2020, winning the Prix Douras Tu in Toulouse and then placing in the Prix Damas Gr 3 in Toulouse.

Dr. Al Nujaifi is now working on his second book, after publishing “The Purebred Arabian Horses of Iraq, Myths & Realities”. He is President of the Iraqi Arabian Horse Organization, Chairman of the Iraqi Registration & Studbook Committee and is on the Executive Committee for IFAHR. He is the WAHO representative/delegate for Iraq and attended the most recent WAHO Conference in Jordan in November 2022.
