It is that holiday season again. I want to personally thank my advertisers who appeared in every issue in 2017. Their support is what helps me continue to bring you Arabian Finish Line. We have been through three cycles of Arabian racing’s Triple Jewel series, and there is zero room to debate that Paddys Day is the MVP by any measure available.

The son of Burning Sand has won the series in each of its first three editions, taking the first two by points, then winning each of the races outright in 2017 for a true sweep. In those nine races – held at four different tracks and distances ranging from six furlongs to a mile – Paddys Day never finished worse than second.
Let’s review the races and the finishes by Paddys Day… Amethyst: Sam Houston, 7 furlongs, March (2nd, 1st, 1st) Emerald: Pleasanton, 6 furlongs, July (1st, 2nd, 1st) Diamond: Los Alamitos (Monmouth in 2017), one mile, September (2nd, 2nd, 1st)
This is a mind-boggling sustaining of form. The first race of the Triple Jewel takes place in March and the third leg is held in September, and they’re all on very different points on the map. Paddys Day not only managed to finish at or near the

again after their first meeting. If Paddys Day got a chance to turn the tables, he flipped the thing over on his rivals. Finding a modern Thoroughbred equivalent to what Paddys Day has accomplished is tough. Even if we use just one milepost race for topshelf older horses – the Breeders’ Cup Classic – much less three, no one has been able to come close to mirroring the two-time Horse of the Year’s consistency. Five horses have run in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at least three times: Perfect Drift five times, and three starts each from Cryptoclearance, Flat Out, Game On Dude, and Marquetry. None of those horses have won an edition of the Classic, and just three have even hit the board. The picture is a little less bleak with the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, where six horses have competed at least three times, four of those hit the board at least twice, and one has won. That was a lot of numbers. Are you still keeping up? What we’re looking for, though, is a horse that can hit the mark consistently in multiple Grade 1-caliber open handicap division races per year. Even beyond the Triple Jewel, Paddys Day has finished

while also starting their breeding careers, including Paddys Day. His first foals are yearlings of 2017, and it hasn’t stopped him from putting in a campaign this season that looks poised to once again garner Horse of the Year honors. While it’s fun to examine great horses in the broader context, the most important thing to do with great horses is appreciate them while they’re with us on the racetrack. There are, of course, some apples and oranges to pick out of the bunch. For Cigar to work in this discussion, we need to throw out most of his first two seasons, which were spent floundering on the turf before he ripped off his legendary 16-race winning streak. Presuming we do that, Cigar’s peak lasted two years – from the beginning of his streak in October 1994 to his final race in October 1996. His aura of invincibility was obviously stronger than that of Paddys Day (whose longest winning streak is five), and he certainly put in the miles, but his run on top was a bit more condensed than the Arabian. That’s not entirely Cigar’s fault, as the horse had a stall waiting for him at Ashford Stud at the end of his 1996 season to begin what was supposed to have been a lucrative stallion career before he was found to be sterile. The “horse is too valuable not to stand at stud” argument is as timeless as commercial breeding itself. What’s Shaking: Whole Body Vibration for the Horse Whole body vibration is considered a passive exercise modality, in which something is being done to the individual, rather than the individual actively engaging in an activity. The idea is that the rapid vibrations (physical oscillations) force the muscles of the body to contract in reaction, providing a form of exercise. There are two basic categories of whole body vibration. One is physiotherapy where vibrations are used to stimulate tissues but not induce actual exercise. The other category is physical exercise where vibrations are used in combination with positions that induce muscle exercise. Considering the movement of the base, various types of vibration can be used: 1) vertical displacement machines of the base with up and down movement, 2) side-alternating displacement machine, while the right site is low, the left side is high and visa-versa and 3) triplanar machines with up and down, forward and back, and side to side movements. Now let me stop here and tell you that the above two paragraphs are referring to the use of physical vibrations with humans. Actually, the idea of using physical vibrations as a therapy goes back to the 19th century, but the modern vibration machines are probably only about 15 years old. Because applying concepts used in human sports, fitness, and physiotherapy to horses is not an uncommon sequela, using vibration therapy on a horse would not be any different.

Upon investigation of each company’s website to see the vibration plate uses - basically all three claimed relatively similar benefits which are listed in the table comparing the three vibration plates. Now I hope that you are thinking to yourself...if this vibration plate can assist with all of these ailments then we should all have incredibly healthy and fit horses all of the time don’t you think? Upon further investigation of the manufacturers’ sites, there was little to no scientific evidence sited behind the claims other than testimonials, referencing human studies, and a few case studies with one exception. The EquiVibe® site did mention that they were the only equine therapy plate to have been published in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science (abstract/JEVS 2015)...noting that this was only an abstract with no full study being published. Within that abstract, the researchers stated that they evaluated the use of the vibration plate on bone density in the stalled horse. They found that both the stalled horses receiving light exercise and the stalled horses placed on the vibration plate had similar bone densities, but did not show increase in bone density, nor could

they make that claim based on the design of their experiment. In a more recent abstract submitted by the same researchers at Middle Tennessee State University (abstract/JEVS 2017), they did not find that the EquiVibe® influenced bone density in exercising horses. Okay, for those of you who follow my column, you know I am a physiologist, and that I always search for evidence-based science when it comes to any type of therapy that I am asked to write about. So, a research of the scientific literature on whole body vibration therapy or exercise in humans turned up over 1880 articles; animal studies turned up 228 articles (primarily mice and rat studies with a few pigs, rabbits, and sheep thrown in);
and horse studies turned up 1 article and 2 abstracts. Oh my, where do I begin? First of all, a very quick overview of the human literature suggests that whole body vibration may improve muscle leg strength, endurance, and walking but was no better than other conventional forms of exercise. There was no strong evidence that it has any specific benefits on bone density or body balance and mobility. A few articles showed some positive effects on fracture healing as long as the vibration frequencies were not too high. In the one horse article about vibration exercise (Polish Journal of Veterinary Science, 2013; 16(2)), the authors noted that cortisol levels decreased when horses were exposed to 10 minutes of
whole body vibration exercise at 15 – 21 hertz with no other changes in the parameters that were measured. Ok...cortisol is released in response to stress (it is your fight or flight hormone) or if you have low blood glucose, so if cortisol level decreases that means you are relaxed right?...maybe/ maybe not but his study was not designed to answer that question, so you have to be careful how you interpret the results and what you imply. So, the unanswered question remains...what does whole body vibration do for the horse? Vibration is a form of mechanical stimulation that provides a physical oscillation. So what these plates are stimulating is cyclic eccentric (muscle lengthens) and concentric (muscle shortens) muscle contractions. Depending upon the frequency of cycles of vibrations per second (hertz, Hz; most plates range from 0 to 100 Hz) and the amount of vertical displacement (how far up and down the plate goes; this is measured in millimeters, mm) or in some plates that includes side to side and forward and back movements, the muscles contract accordingly. It provides mild isotonic contractions to the horse... passive exercise. This type of exercise may definitely aid in improving muscle strength but I think we need to carefully consider the lack of scientific evidence in the horse that there is any dramatic or specific benefit beyond regular exercise. These plates average over $6,000 US (€4,000 to €20,000), and I for one would like to know that I am investing in something other than a glorified exerciser.

By John Schiewe The Russian stallion Priboj, born at the Tersk Stud in 1944, must be acknowledged as one of the greatest perpetrators of racing prowess over the last 100 years. Priboj’s descendants have been overwhelmingly successful in sport horse pursuits, in the field of endurance, and on the race course. A suitable starting point would be to acknowledge the magnificent Koheilan I, paternal grandsire of Priboj, who was such an important breeding stallion in Poland during the interwar period. Not only was he handsome, but his conformation was rock solid and correct. Born in 1922, Koheilan I was sired by Koheilan IV, also noteworthy for being the sire of the gorgeous and
influential mare Koalicja. Koheilan I sired three Polish Derby winners in the 1930’s: Labirynt, Jagoda and Ikwa. The dams of Jagoda and Ikwa were full sisters. Ikwa's overall race record was a perfect 10(10-0-0), with victories in the Oaks, Criterium, and Derby. Ikwa was *Naborr's great-granddam through the tail female line. Koheilan I sired another fabulous Oaks-winning daughter, *Kostrzewa, who had an impeccable racing record of 5(5-0-0). *Kostrzewa brings another important horse into the narrative, namely her dam, Dziewanna. Dziewanna's dam was Kalina, who was also the dam of Jagoda. Five years after the birth of *Kosztrewa, her full brother Piolun was born in Poland in 1934. He would have a significant impact on the
Soviet Union’s breeding program as the sire of Priboj. Dziewanna was the dam of three sons who were breeding stallions in Poland and Russia. Her son, Rozmaryn, by Almanzor, was never unplaced with a record of 9(3-3-3). Two of his daughters, *Bandera and Znachorka raced for six and five years, respectively. Rozmaryn's son Otrok won the Derby and his daughter, Fregata, was victorious in the Oaks. Skrzyp, Dziewanna's son by Lowelas (who was a son of Koheilan I), joined Piolun in Russia as a result of the turmoil surrounding World War II. While Piolun did not have quite the scintillating race record of his full sister, it was still very good at 7(3-30). After his arrival in Russia in 1939, Piolun was crossed with the Crabbet-

bred mare Rissalma to produce Priboj. Much has been written about the racing prowess of the descendants of Rissalma's dam Rissla expressed on multiple continents. In addition there is a lot of "trot" associated with these lines. The Rissla descendant Abu Farwa, although never raced, figured in the pedigrees of many early winners on American tracks with his greatest influence coming as the maternal grandsire of Kontiki, beaten only once and named U.S. National Champion Racehorse. Even to this day, it would be difficult to cite another stallion as influential as Priboj in siring successful performers on the track in Russia. Priboj gave a strong hint of what was to come by winning the Russian Derby, retiring after two years with an overall record of 8(6-2-0) and setting a Russian record for 2400 m. Then his offspring took up the baton. For many years, it was difficult to find a Russian record holder at any distance that didn't have Priboj in the first or second generation. One of his noteworthy daughters was Podruga, who won the Russian Oaks and set speed records for her age group and sex at 1200 m, 3000 m and 3200 m. Podruga's overall record was 14(5-3-2). Her most famous offspring

was Patron, the sire of *Padron. Another great racing daughter of Priboj was Plaksa (out of Kreatura), who was victorious in the Derby and the Oaks. Priboj crossed with Mammona blood as well. Mammona's daughter by Naseem, Nomenklatura, was the dam of Neposeda whose race record was 13(5-3-5). Neposeda, by Priboj, was Champion of the USSR All Union Exhibition at age 16. Mammona's son Pomeranets, by Priboj, was twice named Champion at the same exhibition, which was the equivalent of the Soviet Union's National Championship
Show. Pomeranets was selected as the replacement sire for Priboj. A full sister to Pomeranets was Monopolia, a Reserve Champion at the All Union Exhibition and victorious in the most important race for 2-year-old fillies. It is a tribute to the durability of the Russian Arabian horses that they have been able to stand up to the demanding task of actually competing on the track as 2-year-olds. Monopolia's daughter *Monogramma had a race record of 14(4-3-3) and set a record in her era for the 1500 m for fillies, which was even faster by a fifth of a second than the record for colts at the same distance. Of course *Monogramma is most famous as being the dam of the superlative sire, *Monogramm. Two other full sisters to Pomeranets and Monopolia were Metropolia, the dam of the influential stallion *Menes, and Malpia, the dam of the Tersk standard bearer in America, *Muscat. *Muscat was a U.S. and Canadian Champion Stallion as well as Champion at Scottsdale. The full sisters Prowierka and Piewica, by Priboj out of Wlodarka, were selected to re-establish the line of Kewa/ Szamrajowka in Poland. Piewica's race record was 3(2-1-0), and her son Pien, by Sedziwoj, was the co-holder of the record at 2400 m. The vigorous

to his advanced age, the Russians elected to use Topol, full brother to *Pietuszok. Topol was 13 years old before he was tried at stud, but he proved to be quite successful. His racing credentials, not surprisingly, were outstanding. Topol's record was 16(9-4-3) and included a victory in the Russian Derby. Topol was also a Reserve Champion at the All Union Exhibition. Topol stood at Tersk until his death at 19 in 1977. Two full sisters to *Pietuszok and Topol were Platina, an Oaks winner - 11(4-3-1), and Ptashka - 8(4-2-1). Both had illustrious careers as broodmares in Russia; Platina's daughter, Panel, is known as the dam of the influential sire Palas. These mares were also successful at the All Union Exhibition, with Platina the Reserve Champion and Ptashka named Champion. Their full sibling, Potencja, was a stakes winner in both Russia and Poland, including the Polish Derby. Taktika’s pedigree shows why she blended so successfully with Priboj. For example, it would be difficult to find any horse in Poland in the 1930's to top the achievements of Taktika’s paternal grandsire, Kaszmir. With his record of 18(17-1-0) came wins in the Derby, the Criterium three times over, and nine other stakes.

line that Piewica founded in Poland is now world famous; National Champion Mare Pianissima is arguably the best known current representative. When she was imported to Poland, Prowierka was carrying a filly by Kann, Prowarda, whose race record in Poland was 11(7-1-0). She won the Derby and Oaks. While Prowarda’s tail female family did not take root in Poland, her daughter *Prowizja, by *Ego, was U.S. National Champion Park Horse, and three of *Prowizja’s sons by *Bask achieved the same title while a fourth was the Reserve National Champion Park horse. Sport, one of the best Priboj sons, had two lines to Dziewanna. This transpired since the aforementioned Skrzyp had a daughter named Solianka II whose record was 15(102-3). She won the Russian Oaks and the St. Leger. She in turn was bred to Priboj to produce Sport, who set speed records at 1800 m, 2000 m, 2800 m, 3000 m and 4000 m. He finished his career with a record of 32(12-6-9). It's now time to examine another link to the precious sireline of Priboj, that of his son *Pietuszok. The dam of *Pietuszok was Taktika, who founded the second-most-influential family in Russia next to Mammona. Taktika's racing record was 14(5-2-4). When the breeding career of Pomeranets (who had been his sire's successor) wound down due
The well-traveled *Pietuszok came from the Soviet Union to Poland. After siring in Poland, *Pietuszok was exported to Canada as an aged stallion. Whereas Gladys Brown Edwards characterized *Pietuszok’s full brother Topol as being compact, like a Morgan, with a neck that had a pronounced crest, *Pietuszok was a tall Arabian with a streamlined appearance. *Pietuszok was noteworthy as a sire of many successful racehorses. One favorite was *Beatrice, an Oaks winner, who was out of *Bask's full sister Bandola. Beatrice's overall record was 12(4-0-3). The *Pietuszok daughter *Wilma was interesting in terms of pedigree, since not only did she trace to Koheilan I through her sire line, but had two other crosses as well. *Wilma's dam was by Laur, who was of the *Lotnik branch of the Koheilan I sire line. Laur, predictably, had an excellent racing record of 16(10-1-2) winning the Derby and Criterium. The other link to Koheilan I in *Wilma's pedigree was through his daughter Jaskolka II, noted primarily as Comet's great-grandmother. *Wilma's race record was 13(3-72). As good as *Wilma was, probably no one would have predicted that she would produce *Wiking, who was the best racer of his generation in Poland and America. Credit must be given primarily to Wilma however, since the racing credentials for *Wiking’s sire, Etap, were marginal. Lending credibility to this contention is the fact that Wilma's full brother, *Wosk, was first class on the oval with a record of 28(10-6-4), winning the Derby and six other stakes. *Wiking had 19 starts in Poland with a record of (8-4-1), but he was even more successful as a racer after coming to the United States, compiling a record 19(12-6-1), with many of his wins coming in the most prestigious races offered in his

new homeland. The Armand Hammer Classic, with the largest purse available for its time, was particularly noteworthy for Wiking. In 1985, *Wiking ran second in the Classic, but the following year, he vaulted to first place. After his retirement, *Wiking went on to be the leading sire of racehorses in the United States. By the year 2000, the winnings of the offspring of *Wiking’s nearest competitor were less than half that of *Wiking’s sons and daughters. *Wiking’s son Monarch AH was poised at third on the list and was ready to take on the mantle of his father in the early years of the next millennium. *Pietuszok crossed extremely well with the Ofir daughter Ofirka, giving two full siblings. An instant success was the courageous *Orla, the Polish Triple Crown-winning mare whose record was 11(10-1-0). The year after foaling *Orla, Ofirka had *Orzel, a large, powerful, chestnut Arabian who took a little while to come into his own. His combined race record in Poland and the U.S. was 12(6-4-1). As a fully mature stallion in the U.S., *Orzel came on like gang busters. He even defeated Kontiki, who most experts considered to be invincible. *Orzel was proclaimed U.S. National Champion Racehorse. *Orzel sired many successful racehorses, and his blood has bred on extremely well. One good nick with the *Orzel daughters was the stakes winner *Sambor. For example, the *Orzel daughter, Brusally Orsta, was the dam of the Darley Award-winning CR Samborsta by *Sambor. Her race record in the U.S. was 11(7-1-0) with 5 stakes wins. It is now time to leave the recitation of the overwhelming evidence for preeminence of the race records associated with our subject. A last review of the genotype and phenotype of Priboj is in order. His impact as a breeding sire at Tersk was immense, given the early era of the reconstituted Arabian breeding program of which he was a part. At stud from 1947 to 1957, Priboj sired 203 offspring, with 40 retained for breeding. Priboj’s parents were basically unrelated, since Piolun hailed from Poland and Rissalma came from Crabbet, with neither having a cross to Skowronek. Priboj’s chestnut parents had many external traits in common. Priboj was able to consistently pass on the conformation that reflected his racing prowess. His musculature was pronounced and defined without being bulky. The joints on his perfectly proportioned legs were exemplary and his shoulder, withers, and coupling were basically a textbook

example of excellence. Priboj’s head was very pleasant looking, although it did not show elements of what would now be considered as extreme Arabian type. Priboj blended extremely well with the blood of rather disparate stallions utilized at Tersk. Significant success could be cited with the blood of Arax, Naseem and Aswan. With the Polish-bred Arax, a classic, noble Kuhailan type reflective of the best of Polish breeding was usually the result. Although the Crabbet-bred Naseem was half Polish, since his sire was Skowronek, a different Seglawi flavor was introduced to the mix. In this case, the very striking head and neck of Naseem was brought forward, along with dynamic movement at the trot. The Egyptian-born Aswan brought in the most extreme elements of type along with certain conformational shortcomings that Priboj daughters were nonetheless able to surmount. This particular breeding combination still yielded respectable performers on the track, coming fairly close to the Arax/Priboj cross. When an additional accounting is made of the amazing influence that the Priboj sons Pomeranets, *Pietuszok, and *Topol had on the breeding of sport horses, for which success is charted very much due to objective methods, there can be little doubt as to why Priboj blood must always be remembered. In addition, striking achievements can be documented for Priboj descendants when tracking Top Ten Finishers at the Tevis Cup. Anecdotal lore about this giant of the breed is fast receding into the past, but it is already safe to say that his impact will be everlasting.

Arabians In Art Painting in France: An Interview with Fine Artist Frédérique Lavergne By Gina McKnight www.gmcknight.com From her large studio window overlooking her perennial garden and beautiful horses, Frédérique Lavergne loves to paint. The romance of the French countryside, coupled with the smell of horses and fragrant woodland, enhances Frédérique’s creativity. Frédérique writes, “I need to be connected with horses. This is all I need to feel good for painting.” A world-renowned artist, I caught up with Frédérique and we talked about her art and life with horses. GM: What sets the Arabian Horse apart from other horse breeds? FL: Arabian horses seem to live above the floor, just like if they were constantly flying. A legend says they were created from the wind, but this sounds real when you see them moving, with the nose open, just like if they were breathing the wind which created them. Didn't God say, "I will make you fly without wings”? See the moving, so lightly, a bit like cats do, so proudly, remembering who they are, and where they come from.
FL: When I am commissioned, I appreciate to receive several photos or videos. If I can't meet the horse himself, I need the photos or videos to catch his spirit and soul. Because if you only paint the outside of the horse, his image, the portrait won't reflect who he is, which is the most important to put on the canvas. I also need to have a description from the owner, the way he sees the horse, what he shares with him, where the painting will be hanged (even if possible, a picture of the room where it will be). This is to catch what the client wants to see on the painting, which side of the personality of the horse. Because a horse can be seen very differently by two people, and when I do a commission, I want the client to have his horse, seen by himself, but painted by me on the canvas. When I do a commission, I want to paint the horse like the client would do if he could do it himself. From me come my strokes, my way of composing, how I understood the horse and the relationship he has with his owner.

GM: That is a profound description of the Arabian horse. You know them well, Frédérique! When commissioning a portrait of a horse, what do you require?
GM: Your art is truly stunning. You capture the essence so beautifully. What mediums do you use to create a masterpiece? FL: I paint with oil on canvas, or paper. I use brushes or palette knife. When I draw, I use black stone, which is the pencil that was used by the Dutch masters to do the sketches on the canvases before painting. I like these because they are deep black, as charcoal, but not powdery. I use white chalk also, ink and walnut tint. GM: Does lighting and environment play an important role in the finished portrait? FL: Lighting is essential in my way of painting. It’s because, as I said before, I don’t want to paint only the "surfacing image" as beautiful

equine artists? FL: I have been doing that full-time job since 2000. And sincerely, I would say to any beginner, keep a job out of art. Just to avoid the pressure on your art. The best way to live it is, if possible, to never depend financially on it. Because when you need to get money each month from your painting, the challenge is really harsh to produce real, deep pieces. Just as

And this is a kind of mystery which needs to pop out from the dark, or to stay a bit in a chiaroscuro because the soul can't be entirely seen and understood. GM: You have so many lovely portraits that are my favorites. Do you have a favorite Arabian portrait from your own collection? FL: My favorite Arabian portrait from me is the one on black background. GM: Portraying all horse breeds, where has been your best encounter with horses? FL: I could say first that wherever I can meet a horse is the right place. But really meet them, not just see them. I need time with a horse. I need to touch him, to smell him, to feel him. And whatever breed he his, the encounter happens. I especially had that kind of experience in Portugal, but recently, I have been twice in Mongolia - in June (summer) and January (winter!). I was with breeders and their horses which live so differently than our horses live. Total liberty, food autonomy, not a lot of contacts with humans. I was thrilled to discover horses as they really are. GM: Experiencing horses in their natural habit with minimal human contact must have been exhilarating. I know your paintings travel around the world. Where are you currently exhibiting? FL: I am currently exhibiting in the US in Red Hook, New York at the Equus Art Gallery; in Ireland at the Greenlane Gallery; in Firenze, Italy at the Porcellino Gallery; and in France at the Rouge Garance and L'Art en tete Galleries. GM: From my last conversation with you, I remember you mentor novice artists. Do you have advice for starting
if you were just painting to express your passion for horses and art. It’s possible, but really difficult because you must go on painting, year after year, just as if you were not waiting for people to like the result, but just to express your talent through the tribute to horses. GM: As an avid horse-lover, knowing both the spiritual and physical attributes of horses, what does horsemanship mean to you? FL: First of all, real horsemanship isn't possible without connection in any discipline. I have learnt this with my own horse. I have had two accidents and haven’t been able to ride. I was wondering what I could do with my horse because I wanted to keep a relationship with him, but I couldn't even take him for a walk or grazing. I had my knee broken, then a surgery, and a year after I had five ribs broken and lung perforated. I couldn't take the risk to get pulled by the rope if the horse moved his head too quick. So, I tried to work through "compartmental approach" at liberty, without being close to him at all. Connection is essential then!! And after that, I learnt that the connection you create, helps a

Since I went to Mongolia, horsemanship has a new meaning to me. Now my way is mostly to stand with horses and learn from them. Not asking anything. Just studying their behavior, and trying to catch what they have to "tell" us, what they are telling from their link to universe. I also met Jean Francois Pignon and his horses recently. I have learnt a lot from him. The possibility of getting things from horses just with "talking-horse". We often try to make the horse learn things from us, but we do it with the language we think horses can understand. Maybe this is not wrong, but what I am sure of now is that it is not the more direct and efficient way. This way is to learn how to talk horse. Jean Francois Pignon shows evidence of this. It is so rich and full of emotions! It feeds my creativity.
Wibwilcca immortalized in Racing hall of fame By Stepanie J. Ruff Wibwilcca (pronounced vi'-vil-ka) encompasses everything one looks for in an entry into the Racing Hall of Fame. She was Darley Champion Older Mare in 1999. Overall she raced for 5 years with a record of 46(12-12-5)6-6, $105,775. Among other races, she won the Victorias Secrett S. at Delaware Park and the K A Czubuthan Arabian Cup and Harem Arabian H. at Lone Star Park for then owners Dan and Claudia Spears. As a broodmare, Wibwilcca may be even better. To date, she has had seven foals of racing age, and all of them have started. Six have been winners, four stakes winners and two stakes-placed winners. Two of her daughters, DC Willful Spirit and DC Well Done, are now producing as well so it will be interesting to see if her legacy can continue through the generations.
quite managed a stakes win, but won four races and was stakes-placed six times while earning over $40,000. Her next foal, DC Willful Spirit, a full sister to Vibvilca, won the Texas Yellow Rose as a 4-year-old. The next stakes winner was the 2008 filly DC Willeys Song (by Doran SBFAR) who raced for four years. Like her mother, she had her best year as an older mare at age seven. She won or placed in seven of eight starts and won the grade 1 Buzz Brauninger Arabian Distaff H. and two other stakes en route to being named Darley Champion Older Mare. She retired with over $124,000 in earnings and is also owned by the Henningsgards as the apparent successor to Wibwilcca in the breeding shed. The next foal raced by the Henningsgards that was out of Wibwilcca was Uptown Dannys Boy, a handsome grey son of Burning Sand named in honor of the late Dan Spears. He raced for two years in the U.S., winning the Jerry Partin Memorial COBRA Sprint S. and earning almost $59,000 before being exported to the UAE.
Bred in Kentucky by the Teisan Auto Co. Ltd., Wibwilcca is the daughter of two horses imported from Poland by Lasma. Her sire, Wilkolak (by El Paso), won three races in Poland and was brought to the U.S. in 1988. Her dam, Wibracja (by Elef), sold for $450,000 in the 1985 Polish Ovation Sale held by Lasma. Wibwilcca was the only runner she produced, but Whazi+/ (by El Ghazi) was successful in the Western Pleasure arena.

Dan and Claudia Spears purchased the bay mare as a yearling. They raced her for her entire career and then brought her to the breeding shed. In 2013, she along with other horses, were sold to Jon and Krista Henningsgard of Waller, Texas. She became the foundation mare for their breeding program. Having a mare of that caliber "allowed us to start at the top the food chain and inherit 25 years of professional breeding," said Jon. "It was huge." Wibwilcca's foals have been consistently very good regardless of the covering sire. She has been bred to six different stallions. Her first foal Vibvilca (by Virgule Al Maury) never

She had an excellent year winning three races and finishing second three times out of eight starts. Appropriately enough, her victory in the Texas Lone Star Juvenile S. came on the night Wibwilcca was formally inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame. The night "was very special," said Jon. "Claudia was able to be at that race along with other members of our family." Now at age 23, Wibwilcca is much loved as the matriarch of the farm and is still going strong. She has a coming 3-yearold named Uptown WTF (by No Risk Al Maury) and a 2017 filly. She has established herself as one to remember - an outstanding racemare who could pass along her ability regardless of the stallion.

For this month, I had intended to reprint an old Christmas column that I wrote back in the 90s. Although it was cute (bordering on hilarious), the story was filled with inside jokes and references to owners, horses and trainers who are long gone from the racing scene. There are probably just a handful of old timers who might recognize the humor of Dr. Sam Harrison playing a department store Santa Claus, and Yancy Carter sitting on his lap asking for a win in the upcoming Daughters of the Desert race. Or Bob Rudolf bragging to an elf about a long shot reindeer he had bet on that had won by a red nose. I had thought of updating the story, but now that we have such a wide reaching international racing community of many different faiths, I don't know if a Christmas story is appropriate or politically correct. That being said, I think that Lara Sawaya would make a great Santa Claus. So instead of retelling an old fable, I am going to throw together a mishmash of things that I have written over the years that I hope will provide some historical context of our industry. These snippets also chronicle my personal and emotional perspective on racing from those days. Introduction (from my first column, October 1992) Arabian racing is at the doorstep of a new era. We have come a long way in the past ten years, but there is still a long way to go. Today we have more race meets, better overnight purses, bigger stakes races...... and still many people are just barely getting by. The recent in-
troduction of active, foreign buyers to the racehorse market has clearly been a huge boost to the industry. It has produced some big sales, generated excitement and created much optimism. Will we be able to capitalize on this newfound interest and parlay it into big payoffs for owners, breeders and trainers or will it be a missed opportunity? How we choose to conduct our business will determine that answer, and time will tell. Prediction (May 1993) From the conversations I've had with those who are supposed to know, this phenomenon of being able to sell horses at a decent price could very well evolve into a long term market. Although there are currently only six or eight major buyers from the Middle East, there are many more potential customers from that region. Arabian racing is a growing sport in that area of the world, with several new tracks and facilities recently being built. The fan support is increasing, and agents tell me that they have had inquiries about race horses from their show horse clients. If, as some are hoping, the current import/export quarantines were shortened we could see true international race competition and further increase the demand for our horses. Add it all up and it's not hard to imagine that the need for quality horses could continue for some time into the future. General Observation (November 1993) Life is full of ups and downs, hills and valleys. For those of us involved in horse racing, it's more like a roller coaster. deep dark canyons. We often cover the distance between the two in record setting fractions. One minute everything is going perfect, the next minute you lean to the left and your horse buggers to the right. The down part of 'up and down' can hurt enough to make you forget about the ups. I've never met anyone who has been in this business very long who hasn't thought more than once about giving it all up, taking the loss and calling it quits. I know I've had those thoughts. As bad as it gets, though, it sometimes takes nothing more than watching a group of weanlings racing around the pasture to make you forget the heart breaks and look towards the future. It's a horse race, and we love it. Updated Prediction (September 1995) I'm sure you've heard the old adage about how to make a small fortune in the Arabian race horse business - you start out with a large one. Now that the sheikhs are spending their summers in France (where the large, fast Arabians roam) and American horse buyers have recently been added to the endangered species list, many owners and breeders are looking over their now expanded herds with concern. You don't need to be a mathematical wizard or have a degree in economics to understand the concept of deficit spending. Turning a profit in horse racing was never easy, and now in a slow market it has become even more challenging (understated for satirical intent).
From Bad to Worse (October 1995) There I was, unemployed, with a herd of hungry horses to feed. A herd that increased in size several years ago when I predicted that the Sheikhs would be banging down my door with fistfuls of dollars, looking for race prospects. It's not the first miscalculation I've ever made. Remember, I thought Patriot Missile could run a distance race. Did I mention that we are going through the worst drought in 15 years and that my pasture has dried up and blown away? Or that two mares that had been checked in foal to my now deceased stallion, Brusally Orzelost, came back in heat. It's not like I hadn't been through stressful times before. After all, I had consigned horses to the last couple of Equest auctions. I handled this situation much like I had handled those; mainly walking aimlessly around the house in my pajamas, sobbing uncontrollably. Recovering - In Memory of My Friend Rusty Reeder (February 1997)
Rusty was as big as a bear, with a heart to match. He loved horses (especially his and Glenda's Shana Dew), racing, and people. Like most of us, Rusty had his share of hard luck. Unlike most of us (myself being most guilty), he never let it get him down. He was always there with a smile on his face and a sparkle in his eye. Rusty made you believe in tomorrow. His sudden death hit me hard. The race was too damn short my friend. Things, however, have started to turn around for us. Nothing too spectacular, but just the absence of catastrophe (knock on wood) is cause for celebration. When my filly finally broke her maiden after 12 starts, the black clouds that have surrounded my life began to part. We are a long way from rainbows, but at least the tornado warnings have been canceled. I enter this new year with a new optimism and a better frame of mind. I haven't won many races lately, but I'm still running. More than that, because of friends like Rusty, l believe in tomorrow.
New Prediction (July 1998) No matter how much things change, things remains the same. There will always be hills and valleys, storms and rainbows, stakes winners and bowed tendons. Life will always be a challenge. We get up each day to a new morning and do the best we can. Then, one day, we can look back and write about it. There's More (December 2017) We ran our last race almost a decade ago, and though we are no longer active at the race track, we still have a pasture full of wonderful retirees (along with one unbroken wild child; KA Czubuthan's last). We make it to the races now and then and closely follow the adventures of our friends, both old and new. It's been quite a journey, and for a while longer I will retell stories of the past. And yes, I did sit on Santa's lap way back when, but I guess I was bit too naughty because I didn't get what I asked for. Either that, or he got my address wrong and delivered it to Todd Moak.

Behind the Scenes with Jonothan Horowitz
Arabian Finish Line is pleased to present a new regular column called "Behind the Scenes". The intent is to learn a little bit more about the people of our industry. If you would like to be featured, drop us an email. 1. What is your job title? Sports announcer and broadcaster 2. What do you do at your job? I cover the Arabian stakes races around the United States and in the United Arab Emirates for the Arabian Jockey Club on AJC LIVE and host track broadcasts. I also announce horse races and produce, write, and host a feature television show about the behind-the-scenes of horse racing on Altitude Sports & Entertainment in Denver. 3. How did you get started? I would practice announcing when going to racetracks with my family in Southern California. I became the youngest person to announce a horse race in the United States at Los Alamitos Race Course in 1999 at age 14. I’ve since commentated horse races at 26 racetracks in the United States and Great Britain and have also announced baseball, basketball, boxing, football, gymnastics, hockey, horse shows, lacrosse, soccer, and volleyball as a play-by-play and public address announcer. 4. What is the best thing about your job? The camaraderie I develop by spending time with the owners, trainers, jockeys, and horses and learning their stories 5. What is the worst thing about your job? Balancing the highs and lows of show business 6. Tell us about the horse(s) you own/ride? I’ve been doing eventing for the past two years with trainer Ashley Gubich of Super G Sporthorses in Franktown, Colo. It’s particularly rewarding for me to learn how to ride on horses I’ve announced, such as Columbia Rivr Rose. “Rivr” was beaten a combined 63 lengths in two career starts at Arapahoe Park and is now a promising jumper and eventer. I’m also enjoying competing in shows, even though I usually get my butt kicked by 12-year-old girls. 7. Give us a tip about something horse related – anything you want to share! When I finish announcing a day’s races, the phrase I sign off with is “Keep picking winners!” to apply to racing and in life.

Avranche was subsequently suspended for two race days having pleaded guilty to interference.
This years’ renewal of the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown (Gr1PA) promised to be exciting and in the event, it was filled with drama. The world’s most valuable Arabian horserace featured the defending title holder, RB Burn (Majd Al Arab x Burnie Gee PW, by Burning Sand), who faced leading European-trained challenger and multiple Group 1 winner Muraaqib (Munjiz x Tashreefat, by Bengali D'Albret). Also of interest was Ahzar, runner-up in the French Derby at Chantilly in June, and Faucon Du Loup, winner of round two of the Al Maktoum Challenge (Gr1PA) over further in January. Representing the U.S. were 2-time Darley Horse of the Year Paddys Day and grade 1 winner Quick And Rich.
Though they took no pleasure in the manner of the win that evening, it was clearly a great victory for Muraaqib’s team as his trainer Francois Rohaut had taken the brave decision not to race at Chantilly in the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr1PA) in October and instead drop back to a mile with this race as the target. Shadwell Stud Director Richard Lancaster commented: “That was very dramatic. They are two very good horses, and if you look back at their threeyear-old form in France, they were closely matched then too. We’re very excited for Sheikh Hamdan, for Francois and his team, and for everyone at Shadwell as of course he is a homebred.”
RB Burn raced keenly in the early stages, though was settled in mid-division under restraint by Gerald Avranche as Shateh and Richie Mullen led the field, just ahead of Paddys Day and Keiber Coa. Entering the home straight, Shateh was still just in front, though Paddys Day had slipped through the pack to the rear. RB Burn had closed three-wide, with Muraaqib to his outside, with Quick And Rich doing the best of the US raiders moving into seventh. As the tempo increased, RB Burn laid down his challenge under strong riding from Avranche, and they duelled with Muraaqib out in front, throughout the final furlong. RB Burn appeared to have the stronger hand, with Muraaqib never able to pass and as they swept across the line, it looked like a repeat win for RB Burn. The top U.S. finisher was Quick And Rich, who took sixth in the final strides and a share of the prize money.
The supporting card also included the finals of the HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Apprentice and Ladies World Championships. Danish Apprentice Ina Toverud coasted to a nine-length victory on AF Yatroq for Ernst Ortel, whilst Belgian teacher Alice Bertiaux provided some comfort for Eric Lemartinel and the Al Asayl team, winning on RB Inferno, a son of recent Hall of Fame inductee TH Richie, who was bred in the U.S. by Rosebrook Farm.
However, the winner's celebrations were short-lived as Muraaqib’s jockey, Jim Crowley, lodged an objection to the winner saying that interference had taken place. Following 40 minutes of deliberations in the Stewards Room, the placings were reversed and Muraaqib was awarded the race, though RB Burn’s trainer Eric Lemartinel subsequently lodged an appeal. The original objection, that RB Burn had drifted across from 200m out, forcing Muraaqib wide and then bumped Muraaqib, causing the horse to become unbalanced and lose ground, was upheld. Considering the winning margin of a neck, the stewards felt had Muraaqib been afforded a clear run, he would have won. 28 • Arabian Finish Line • December 2017/January 2018
