As I write this I'm preparing to go to Delaware Park for the weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing the familiar faces there. It was a year ago that I announced to everyone at White Clay Creek Country Club that I was taking over this magazine. Wow...it's already been quite a ride and it looks like it's going to get even better. Upon returning from Delaware I'm getting ready to take Finish Line to ADIHEX for the first time. This will also be my first trip to the UAE, and I'm really looking forward to it. The magazine needs to gain a greater presence in that part of the world. Arabian racehorses bred in America are good enough to compete all over the world and we need to show them that! Since the magazine has gone digital, the top 5 countries based on number of readers is 1. United States 2. Qatar 3. United Arab Emirates 4. Turkey and 5. United Kingdom. So it makes sense to bring the printed version and the Stallion Guide to them. Another interesting tidbit from the digital reading stats is that people spend 2 to 4 hours reading each edition. I was really impressed by that! For all you advertisers (and potential advertisers) that's an important point. People read this magazine from cover to cover and they take their time doing it! They pay attention to what is on every page and that includes your ad. Believe it or not, breeding season is fast approaching and advertisers are already lining up their fall and winter campaigns. Look for information on the 2016 Stallion Guide coming in the next month or so. It will likely follow the same format as it did in 2015. Speaking of advertising, a more formal announcement will be made soon, but Finish Line is bringing on two ladies to help with ad sales. They both bring unique skills and connections to the table. They are enthusiastic and share my vision for the future of the magazine. They will help expand the advertising and readership, and I'm very excited to be working with both of them. Curious? Texas Retama Park is scheduled to open on August 28 and is scheduled to run through September 27. However, a political battle in Austin could shut down all racing in Texas at the end of August. “We’re 100 percent business as usual moving forward unless we’re informed otherwise,” said Kevin Whalen, Retama’s general manager. “It’s what we do,” he said, “so it’s important to us. We’re going to continue the meet.” The fight, pitting conservative lawmakers against the Texas Racing Commission, could end up crippling the state’s already struggling $5.5 billion racing industry. The dispute centers around holding historical racing at Texas’ seven racetracks. Lawmakers have objected to it because they feel the machines required too closely resemble video lottery terminals that are illegal in Texas. Because legislative budget leaders have yet to approve funding for the commission to operate in the new fiscal year beginning Sept. 1, the commission’s executive director is warning that the agency may have to shutter the state’s tracks at the end of August. “Absent the necessary approvals by the Legislative Budget Board, the agency will no longer be able to pay its employees or its rent and will close by the end of the day on August 31, 2015,” commission executive director Chuck Trout said in a letter to an attorney representing the track. 5 • Arabian Finish Line • September 2015

After last month's sort of sad column, I had intended to follow up with a light and humorous story. I was part of an event, however, so powerful that I just had to write about it. I pen this story as much for myself, as I do for my readers, and only hope that I can convey it properly. It was an extraordinary and emotional experience, that even now, I have a hard time processing. Perhaps writing this down will help me make sense of it. Our stallion, KA Czubuthan (Legs) was nearing his end here on earth. His body was beginning to shut down, and we knew that it was just a matter of days before he would be leaving us. Not having a vet around who makes farm calls, we were prepared to euthanize him when the time came. Last Monday morning when I went to feed him, he was not waiting for me at the gate or in his shed; he was laying down at the bottom of his one acre pasture. I ran to him. He was in pain, breathing heavy and could not get up. I called for my farm manger, Lyndon, and went to get some medication. Although the banamine seemed to relive his some of his pain, he did not have the strength to get up. Lyndon suggested that it was time and we do what needed to be done. Although I thought he was right, I just couldn't do it. Perhaps the struggle through the night had taken his strength, perhaps there was still hope, perhaps I was not ready. I told Lyndon to get the tractor and some rope; I wanted to try and get him up. And

we did. On very shaky legs we held him up, then slowly walked him up to his shed. He could barely stand and we both agreed that when he went down again, which we thought would be very soon, we would end his pain; I just couldn't do it while he was still up on his feet, fighting death. I went and told Vicki that it was time to say goodbye. There in the shed we put a fan on him and sponged him down as the outside temperature rose. Vicki talked to him about the good old days and all the fine things he had done. I gave him another shot of banamine and we waited. He just stood there and we stayed by his side for the entire day trying to provide what comfort we could. Comfort for him. Comfort for ourselves. He took a few sips of water but would not eat. Lyndon took the tractor to the bottom of his pasture, one of Legs' favorite spots, and dug a large grave. The day went on and Legs remained standing in his shed. That evening, a few hours before sunset, Legs walked out and slowly made his way down to the bottom of his pasture. He looked over the pile of earth by the grave site and pawed at it. Then he walked a few yards away and stood, looking out across the field. There was a sense of peace about him. As the sun set he remained there motionless, like a majestic statue. In that fading light I did not see an old and dying horse. He looked like the grand stallion of his youth. After dark, a distant storm lit the sky. I could see his silhouette against the flashes of lightening. I was amazed 6 â&#x20AC;˘ Arabian Finish Line â&#x20AC;˘ September 2015

that he was still with us, but sure he would not make it until morning. About ten, I went to bed. At two in the morning I went out with a flashlight. He was still standing there at the bottom of the pasture; without movement, his head held high. I was up at daylight, and barefoot and in my pajamas, I went out to his pasture. I could barely believe my eyes, but he was still there, at that same spot. I hurried back to the house and threw on some clothes and my shoes. It took just a few minutes. I came back out, but Legs was not in the pasture, he was not in his shed. I ran down to the bottom of the pasture and found him. He was lying in his grave. He had not stumbled in, he was not trying to get up, he just laid there quietly. He was not in pain, his breath was quiet, but he turned his head and looked at me with open eyes. It was as if he was looking into my soul. I laid by his side for a few minutes and then with tears in my eyes, said goodbye. Afterward: This story is true (except for the pajamas; I was in my underwear). I wouldn't blame you if you thought I was spinning a yarn or creating an incredible fable. Even now, I must remind myself that it was not a fantasy or a dream. As improbable as it seems, it was real. Last month I bragged on what KA Czubuthan accomplished in his life. For me, that is overshadowed by his final day on earth. He faced his end with incomprehensible strength, dig-

nity and courage. Although it was one of the one the saddest days in my life, I am blessed to have been a part of it; uplifted and thankful for an experience that has profoundly affected my life. Editor's note: I had the pleasure of seeing K A Czubuthan several times when he was standing at Mandolynn Hill Farm. I was always struck by his power and attitude even as a senior stallion. We should all be so fortunate to have that "once in a lifetime" horse that he so obviously was for Mike and for Vickie. My condolences go out to everyone that loved this stallion. No doubt he is now racing his old rivals across the rainbow bridge.

How Do You Know If Your Horse Is the Correct Weight: Assessing Your Horse’s Body Condition Most horse owners acknowledge that achieving and maintaining an appropriate body weight contributes to the overall health of the horse. Body condition scoring is one of the most useful tools for weight management in the horse. However, according to a recent survey of horses owners in the UK and Australia many horse owners (46%) do not understand how to use body condition scoring to monitor their horse’s body weight and an additional 10% did not know what body condition scoring was. They say that “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” which has never been more true than in the body condition scoring of horses. Beauty in one owner’s eye may be skinny in another’s. Body condition scoring allows you to assess the amount of fat a horse is carrying, not their muscle tone, coat condition, etc. In this way, the same system can be applied to everything from a non-competitive pasture pony to a fit racehorse. Because body condition measures the balance between intake and expenditure of energy, by fat scoring regularly you will be able to tell whether your horse needs to gain, lose or maintain weight. This information is vital when it comes to figuring out how much you should be feeding your horse. Body condition can be affected by a variety of factors including: food availability, weather, reproductive activity, performance activity, parasite, dental issues and feeding practices. Currently, there are two common body condition scoring systems that are used. Both systems use palpation and visual assessment of degrees of fatness. One is the body condition scoring system developed by Dr. Don Henneke which has served to provide one standard scoring sys-

tem which can be used across breeds and by all horse people. This system assigns a numerical value (1 to 9) to fat deposition as it occurs in various places on the horse’s body. Fat is assessed in six areas: loin, ribs, tailhead, withers, neck, and shoulders (See Figure 1). A numerical value is assigned based on the cumulative fat in all six areas (See Table 1). It is suggested that the optimum score using this system is 5. Body fat reserves are important to the overall health of a horse because fat represents energy reserves that can be used during periods of stress. Horses at a score of 3 or below have virtually no fat reserves. If more energy is needed, protein is broken down from muscle to meet energy requirements. If a horse is exposed to extreme cold, lactation or some other severe stress, a condition score of 6 or 7 would be desired. Horses with high condition scores are predisposed to problems. Fat horses tend to be less agile and tire more quickly than trimmer horses. Fat horses are more prone to colic and laminitis. Extremely fat horses may also have endocrine problems. The second condition scoring system was developed by Australian researchers Carrol and Huntington. This scoring system assigns a numerical value of 0 to 5. Fat is assessed along three areas: neck, back/ribs, and pelvis (See Table). It is suggested when using this system that 3 would be ideal for most show and leisure horses and a score of 2 would be normal for a fit racehorse or eventer. Body condition scoring systems will by no means tell you

how fit your horse is for performance. Although horses in training will have less fat due to their exercise intensity, remember, the fat level has nothing to do with muscle tone, cardiovascular fitness or any other measure of athletic conditions.

Last month began the interview with new trainer Marcia Weilbach, and the interview concludes this month. Since this piece was written, Marcia saddled her first winner, Motown Rising, in a claiming race at Hazel Park on July 31. JN: Get R Done and Hot Lava are two horses with a long history in Michigan racing for Tom and Joyce Fritz. How did they end up with you? MW: “After purchasing my first two horses from them, I purchased Hot Lava as an endurance prospect. Lava, affectionately known to us as “Skinny,” had actually started his endurance career with two 30-mile and one 50-mile ride completed before I put him back into racing late in the 2014 season for one race, as owners. Last year he was only seven, so we thought it would not be asking too much of him to have a few more races. “With Get R Done, it was a little different. The first time I saw him, he was in race training with Mario Fritz, as was Hot Lava. I absolutely loved him, but Tom and Joyce were very hopeful that he would be able to race again after sustaining an injury, so there was no hope of purchasing him at that point. “Unfortunately, the injury came back (even though he won the race), and Tom and Joyce, always having believed in his amazing ability, decided to rest him, and give him time to heal. I suggested to the Fritzes that they try treating the injury with a magneto pulse machine the way the late Tom Ivers described. They agreed, and he

was sent to me for the winter months for therapy. “The therapy went very well, and seemed to be successful. But, I could not get it over my heart to let him go. He is an amazing horse, with the greatest personality, so I literally just fell in love with the horse. The Fritzes finally agreed to sell him to me, this was before we had any thoughts of racing, so I was hoping he would stay sound for endurance.” JN: Get R Done is a horse who has shown immense talent, but seems to have trouble keeping it all held together in the long run. Tell me about the process of getting him to the races and what you’re doing to make sure he can stay healthy and on the track? MW: “I started riding him last spring, just short four-mile walks that progressed to trotting and then longer slower distances. By May, he was able to complete a 30-mile endurance successfully. “I continued working him, doing slow hill work; no speed, just solid strength building work. Then followed cantering rolling hills at a steady pace building up the miles slowly. He rested throughout the winter, and I re-started where we left of before the winter. He has never been unsound, so just before the racing season started, we decided we would give racing a try with him. “We took each exercise session one day at a time, and that is what we 11 • Arabian Finish Line • September 2015

continue doing, closely monitoring his condition during and after every ride. This horse is all heart, and loves to race, so it is vital that you watch him carefully because he will run with only three legs if he had to. He’s that honest and willing. We have never had to use any medication on him, and we do about 20 minutes of cold water therapy on his legs after each work session.” JN: What advice did you get about the two horses upon receiving them? MW: “I was told that the best way for me to learn the ropes would be to start with experienced horses, so they could teach me the ropes. I cannot take all the credit should these horses continue to run well. They were bred, raised, and trained by very talented and experienced people that have made my job much easier. These two horses, and the Smokes’ Motown Rising make me look good. It is a privilege to work with such talented horses.” JN: What was it like having one of your first starters be a Darley Award finalist? Did you watch Get R Done’s 23-length stakes win at Mount Pleasant Meadows? MW: “Get R Done made my first experience saddling so much easier. He was calm and collected despite hundreds of 4th of July fireworks going off all around the perimeter of the track. The noise was defining and I felt so sorry for the horses. He made me feel

like a professional even though I was quite nervous. Thank goodness, praying for the horses and everyone involved helped to keep me calm and focused. “I have seen that race, and I don’t think there is anybody that could watch at that race and not utter a jaw dropping 'Wow!' I can only hope we can still harness a little of that talent he displayed before. Although he is eight, he still thinks he’s a hot shot.” JN: Tell me about that first race with Get R Done and Hot Lava. It was obviously eventful with Hot Lava blowing the break, but Get R Done put in a good run. What was going through your mind before, during, and after? What did you take away from that race to make yourself and your horses better going forward? MW: “The thing I remember the most is praying before, during, and after the race. Mainly along the lines of having a safe race, and not coming out afterward looking like a fool. “Before the race, I was surprisingly calm, and kept myself busy with the standard routine things like grooming, double-checking tack, etc. I saddled Get R Done first, since he is calmer than Hot Lava, and I wanted to get him done before saddling Hot Lava, but the fantastic paddock valets took care of the saddling part for me. I could concentrate on talking to Lava to keep him calm and focused on me. “There is no possible way to describe the feeling of seeing your horses out there on the track. It is exhilarating yet terrifying all rolled into one. It was very unfortunate that Hot Lava stumbled badly during the break, but my jaw just about dropped seeing him race after the other horses, and all credit goes to his jockey Eric Edwards, that rode tenaciously and did not give up for even a second despite being hopelessly left behind.

“I was so proud of Hot Lava, although he came in last, he was on his way passing the horse in front of him, and Edwards told me that if it was a 5 ½ furlong race, the results would have been different. Hot Lava showed me that he is a fighter, and I had not seen that in him before. I am looking forward to seeing what he and Edwards are going to do in their next race. “Get R Done did have a great race. His jockey, Ubaldo Luna, is still an apprentice and I gave him the ride because he has been doing all my work riding at the track. Get R Done likes the rail, and Luna was having a hard time getting him to move off the rail. Thus, he was boxed in on the rail behind the front runners. He had lots of horse left at the end of the race, but nowhere to go, so he ran a strong 4th. I think he is only going to improve, and certainly needed the run after being absent from the track for two years. “I was very pleased with both horses’ and jockeys’ performances, and I’m excited about having the next opportunity to run them, and seeing what the other two horses I train will do. I was just so grateful afterward for a safe run, and the encouragement & support of the Youngdales & Ruvalcabas who also had horses in the race. “I think we are on track with our nutrition, since I am fortunate enough to have my very own animal nutritionist in my husband. He has done an awesome job in specially formulating our feed, and most importantly a vitamin pack that has everything in it except the kitchen sink. But, there is definitely more work to be done in the conditioning department. There is so much more to learn, and different things to try. I believe that you never stop learning and innovative ideas can come from places you least expect.” JN: What do you see as your biggest challenges going forward? 12 • Arabian Finish Line • September 2015

MW: “The biggest challenge is probably the lack of horses running, especially in Michigan, and also the lack of trainers. It just boils down to finances. Times are tough, and training & feeding horses while running for small purses, makes it hard. The tracks are suffering too. With such few numbers, it is hard to write races, let alone fill races, with horses sharing the same conditions. “Secondly, there is so much negativity. Very few people believe this to be a viable proposition anymore, and the few diehards still at it, are finding it hard to work together because it’s hard to share the pie when it’s getting smaller and smaller.” JN: Now that you’ve had a pair of starters under your belt, what advice would you have to someone looking to get into the business for the first time? MW: “It is possible. If you want it bad enough you can do it. At the heart of any horse discipline is basic good horsemanship, so no matter what discipline you are currently in, you can learn to train racehorses. You just need to be persistent, and be willing to learn from your mistakes. “Endurance riders especially make excellent flat race trainers. I believe Dianne Waldron, Scott Powell, and Garrett Ford to name a few, came from an endurance background. If you know how to feed, take care, and get a horse fit, you have the basics down already. There are some great people in Arabian racing eager to help and give advice. Visit as many trainers, and breeders as you can. Ask lots of questions. “I try to remember to live by this great quote: ‘Strength doesn’t come from what you can do. It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t.’”

JN: What advice have others given you in regards to the horse racing business? MW: a. Start small. b. Use everything you already have, if you can (horses, tack, training facilities, etc.)

c. Start with experienced horses first that can teach you. d. Ask lots of questions. e. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you make mistakes, because you are going to make plenty of them. f. Listen to the horse. They will tell you when they are ready, or alternatively, when something is wrong. g. There are no hard and fast rules. Every horse and every track are different, on different days. h. Too little conditioning is better than over conditioning. i. One race is equal to 3 breezes.

Interview with Julian Smart Private trainer to HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani and Al Shahania Stud

it is going here. I think it probably has to go the way it appears to be going, which is single races on Thoroughbred cards. I think Abu Dhabi in particular and HH Sheikh Mansoor through Lara Sawaya are certainly doing wonders for the sport, it’s just whether other people come on board as well.” How did you get involved with Arabian racing?

He is based in Doha, Qatar, during the winter and in Lambourn, England, during the summer. He currently rents a yard at Thoroughbred trainer Paul Cole’s private training centre at Whatcombe. There will be a brief stopover with the Arc meeting runners in France. Until last year when Al Shahania bought their own yard, he used to board them with another top Thoroughbred trainer, Criquette Head-Marek. What are your thoughts on Arabian racing worldwide at this time? “Arabian racing is as strong as it could be expected to be in the Gulf regions at the moment. Having said that I was a bit concerned over the winter in Qatar where I’m based, that the Arabians were maybe being put a little bit on the back burner. However the new programme has recently come out and though I haven’t been fully

through it, it seems to be that it has been brought back on to a more even keel. So with the increased prize money of the Kahayla Classic in Dubai, the new race in Abu Dhabi in November, the rumors about the Emir’s Sword increasing in prize money again, it looks as strong as ever in the Gulf and in the States it’s not looking too bad. I can’t speak personally because I’m not there anymore but following it, it looks like it’s coming back to the good old days. In France it’s as strong as ever. As a follower on Facebook, Morocco are posting, and Holland had a nice race that Lahoob won. In the UK I’m on the fence, I really am, because numbers seem to have diminished. We’ve still got lots of old horses running around. I’d like to consider myself part of UK Arabian racing but I don’t seem to be. I guess I’m in limbo between international and domestic. I’m not really sure which way 15 • Arabian Finish Line • September 2015

“I reluctantly moved to Canada with the family and it ended up being the best move we could have made, obviously. We bought a house off a gentleman named Roger Hoffart who owned TJ Ranches. He owned a diamond drill bit company for oil rigs and had some Arabian racehorses, so he asked me would I be interested in working. I said yes, because I was doing A Levels at the time and I was going to do the typically student summery thing and do nothing. He offered me a job in the oil and that didn’t interest me at all, so he then suggested the horses and I thought, well I’m in the Wild West, why not give it a go! The great story about that is one of the first horses I ever came across and got to know really well was a horse called Sueade, who Roger Hoffart owned. I had the absolute privilege of working with him when I was at an early stage of my career. He was already racing, but he was a youngster. In the short period of time that I had to work with a couple of Roger’s trainers, I got to know him well. I used to sleep in the stable next to him. I lived and breathed the game. I was in it 247, and there were no breaks for me. He used to wake me up in the middle of the night munching on his hay. One thing led to another and Roger was eventually good enough to take him from Canada to the States because I said to Roger, he’s a great horse, and your horses in general are just too

good. The Canadian racing wasn’t at a great level - it’s now stopped which is a shame because there are some great racetracks over there. But you had to have a little bit of money to do it back then and fortunately he supported his hobby with his oil rig business. So we went to the fair meets in Montana and Washington and we were at the opening of Arapahoe Park in Colorado. Eventually we ended up in California. Sueade won numerous stakes races and it was through him that I was offered a position in the Gulf really, because they wanted to buy him. The Sheikhs from Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mansoor and Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed, were all in San Deigo in college. They wanted to buy the horse because he was beating everything that they had bought. Roger wouldn’t sell him. He said absolutely not; this is going to be a horse that retires to my back garden. He’s going to eat grass outside my porch! So they came up with the idea of renting him and Roger said ‘ok that’s not a bad idea and then you give him back to me’. Then they said we want the trainer as well and Roger left that up to me. I’ve always travelled from a very young age so I didn’t have to think twice, I said ‘yeah let’s go, why not?’ But it was around the time of the first Gulf war, so over in America it was all ‘don’t go, it’s too tricky’ but no. That was twenty plus years ago now and I’ve been there ever since. Sueade was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame in the States, what did that mean to you? I’m in awe that a horse that I was remotely involved with has been inducted into the American Hall of Fame. As they say in America, that’s just awesome, it really is, for Roger, and for the horse, because he was a super horse. He never got to shine in the Gulf and he did unfortunately pass away there so he never got the chance to come

back to the garden, but Roger was great about the whole thing. He won something like 33 or 34 from 60 starts and it wasn’t running around the bush in Canada; it was in the States. We were labelled the ‘Canadian Invaders’. So it was brilliant, we were flying the flag for Canada, we were beating the Americans at their own game. He absolutely deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, that’s really terrific. I would have loved to have been able to get over there for the ceremony. How did your career develop once you arrived in the Gulf?

I was very fortunate to get the job with the Royal Cavalry of Oman, and I was there for five years I think, so 14 years in Abu Dhabi and five years with the Brigadier Abdulrazak Al Shawarzi. It was absolutely fantastic at the Royal

I landed in Abu Dhabi with Suede in 1992, though I didn’t finish a complete season there because they sent me to France to look at the French Arabians to buy. I’m very grateful to them for doing that as I learnt to speak French in a hurry because nobody would speak any English to me, so I now have a second language! The year we came back, I had a 50% wins to runners strike rate in the Gulf and we were one of the first stables to import French Arabians for racing. Cavalry, I brought them back to the UK and look at them now - they’ve gone on in leaps and bounds. Then I got the offer at Al Shahania and I actually refused them once, but you can’t refuse twice – it’s a massive stable and you’ve only got to look at the results we’ve had. We’ve been lucky enough to win three Emir Swords, three World Cups, a Kahayla Classic, three Shadwells, a Hatta, numerous big races. So look I’ve had a great run – long may it continue! My career has really blossomed at Al Shahania, but with the quality of the horses they have, it can’t not do.

You have had many great experiences, is there a highlight? I’m asked all the time what is the highlight of your career? There are way too many, but honestly from the smallest maiden winner to the biggest Group 1 winner, it’s the thrill of taking a particular horse to beat everybody else’s horses who are trying to do exactly the same. The thrill of competition, whether it’s a one million euro race or a small race at Hereford – ok it’s not quite the same, but for me as a racehorse trainer, I’m in it to train racehorses, obviously to win the big races, but anytime you get your horse in front, at the wire, it’s job done isn’t it? I personally get immense satisfaction from winning the big races but I am still very, very satisfied winning any race, because that’s what we’re in it for. You are a truly international trainer, how do you find shipping them from country to country to race?

Travelling with the horses is a challenge. It used to be too difficult, but now you don’t think twice putting them on a plane or a train or a boat or whatever. There’s a lot involved, but it’s very, very easy to do now. Like the racing game, from where I started my career to where I am now, it’s not anywhere near to what it used to be. When I began no one had heard of the Gulf, no one knew there was racing in Dubai, where was that? Nobody knew where it was. Now you’ve got Dubai, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, Saudi, Qatar, Kuwait, they all do it and everybody knows where they are. Beforehand nobody had ever heard of them. The goal posts have changed all across the board, and it’s much easier now, but we’ve also got the added advantage of having very, very good people that ship the horses.

I’m a classic distance trainer. I like horses to be running over a mile and half. I’m not saying that Arabian racing needs its own identity away from that of the Thoroughbred, but when we’re running five furlongs, six furlongs, seven furlongs, it’s everything that the Thoroughbreds do. So when the public watch Arabians running, they see that there is nothing that is any different, other than that they are slower, so why should they bother? They don’t understand anything about the form, so you can understand why they might prefer to watch the Thoroughbreds. Perhaps if we leaned a bit more towards longer trips, the Arabian breed is supposed to be an endurance horse anyway, so surely you’d want to go a bit further.

32nd Dubai International Arabian Races - Newbury, UK Text and photos by Debbie Burt Even the rain on July 26 could not diminish the importance of the 32nd Dubai International Arabian Race (DIAR) meeting to the knowledgeable crowd of seasoned Arabian racegoers or the excitement of the top class action for those experiencing Arabian racing for the first time. The highlights of the day, the three Group 1 PA races, all lived up to expectations, confirming established champions and heralding a new one. The Emirates Premier Handicap Stakes over a mile went to Aghsaan, getting the DIAR patron, HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum off to a flying start with a homebred winner. She produced an emphatic four length victory from Karar and the favourite Katonahotinroof MHF, and was ridden by His Highness’s retained jockey Paul Hannagan. This winning formula was repeated in the second, to give His Highness and trainer Gill Duffield a double for the day. Rasaasy looked a good horse in the making, battling on strongly to win the Emirates Equestrian Federation International Stakes by half a length from Selketh, who also looked like one to note for the future. A seven furlong Group 2 contest confined to three year olds, he was following in the hoofprints of his half sister Salaama, who had

won this event last year. The Emirates NBD International Stakes that followed was a mile and a quarter conditions event attracting a number of quality performers who had just missed out in Group company. Olivier Peslier gave a masterful performance on the Royal Cavalry of Oman’s Vulcain Du Clos, not producing him until the final half furlong, to draw clear of Bon Baiser De Faust and Rasi. There was further joy for the Royal Cavalry of Oman in the first of the Group 1 events, the six furlong Jebel Ali Racecourse Za’Abeel International Stakes. Al Mouhannad was on course to record a hat trick in this contest and she did so in style from Meeyur and Ghazwa. Another horse who requires holding up, she confirmed her dominance in a matter of strides and hopefully will return next year for a record fourth attempt. The Group 1 Hatta International Stakes had a new sponsor in Dubai Duty Free, and they could not have wished for a better start than to have the 2014 World’s joint Top Rated Arabian racehorse, Djainka Des Forges in the line up. Not only clear on ratings, she was bidding for back to back wins. Harry Bentley was handed the lead on Djainka Des Forges more than three furlongs out and only had to shake the reins for HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khlaifa Al Thani’s mare to assert her superiority, crossing the line two and a half lengths clear of Loraa and a fast finishing Hurra who was only a head behind in third.

The quality field included two previous winners in Djet Taouy and Al Hibaab, plus Lahoob who had started his season

“When I heard Gary Capewell [raceday commentator] put him forward as one of his selections during an earlier interview, I was delighted. Needless to say we nearly fell down the stairs running out here to see him come in after his win – you would have thought it was the Kentucky Derby! “I’m so happy for Beverly, her owner and the colt. After the race I went right over to HE Mirza Al Sayegh and said ‘This is a Kaolino colt’ and he said ‘One of our stallions’ and I said ‘Yes! This is an example of the quality of horse he produces and you’ll see lots more in Texas when you come out to visit in November for the DIAR races. He was thrilled.”

with a Group 1 win. In the closing stages it looked for a few strides as if Djet Taouy would regain his crown, but he was no match for Gazwan, who with ears pricked, scored by half a length. Bentley was at least allowed to rest on his laurels as Smart’s Al Shahania representative in the Rotana Hotels and Resorts Premier Handicap Stakes, Abhar, was to be ridden by leading amateur jockey, Simon Walker. Walker steered him to a six length victory, bringing an end to Gill Duffield and HH Sheikh Hamdan’s nine year dominance of this one mile five furlong contest. She did train the second Azizi, who was seeking a double, having won this event last year. The day concluded with a sixteen runner cavalry charge for the National Academy of Indian Payroll Handicap Stakes over seven furlongs. This was won in taking style by the US bred Kao Kat MHF for Mohammed Nasser Al Hashar, giving jockey Simon Walker a double. Trainer Beverley Deutrom had won the corresponding event last year, and also supplied the second, Maghazi, with Vindetta putting up an improved performance to be third.

Breeder, Michelle Morgan spoke of her involvement with Shadwell whose three American based stallions stand at her Mandolyn Hill Farm in Aubrey, Texas. She said, “It’s awesome to be involved with Shadwell and today is such a wonderful day of Arabian racing. Those three stallions, Chndaka, Kaolino and Nivour De Cardonne all have different characters but they’re wonderful to be around. “Kao Kat MHF was out of Here Kitty Kitty who I owned for a while. Sadly she’s no longer with us but was an awesome mare and she had the lines of Kontiki which I love. I thought that would be a really good cross with Kaolino and he looks fabulous today. So I’m very happy with him and the other horse I bred, Katonahotinroof MHF [also by Kaolino] who was third in the first race. It’s been a great day for Shadwell and a great day for Mandolyn Hill Farm.”

Speaking at the end of the meeting, Race Street Management’s Denise Gault commented “It’s been a marvellous day for Shadwell Arabian Stallions. This colt, Kao Kat MHF was the icing on the cake. He was such a magnificent youngster and when we sold him to Beverley, she had great faith in him, but she was also able to take some time off with the colt. She said this colt needs a little time, he needs to mature, needs to correct a few things. Clearly he’s back on track. 19 • Arabian Finish Line • September 2015

The Arabians closed out Arapahoe Park in style. Paddys Day stormed away to an 18 3/4-length domination in Sunday’s 1 1/4-mile, Grade 3 COBRA Classic Sponsored by Crow Valley Ranch. Ridden by Kelsi Purcell for trainer Scott Powell, the 4-year-old colt posted his biggest margin of victory in a precocious career of eight wins, including five stakes victories, in 10 starts with earnings approaching $100,000. “Paddy is the real deal,” Powell said. “He was pulling. If they went two miles, he would have won by 70 [lengths].” Paddys Day, who clocked 2:20.71 for 1 1/4 miles, will aim to win the third leg of the new Arabian Triple Jewel Series at Los Alamitos Race Course in Southern California on September 19, having captured the second leg at Pleasanton, California in his previous race on July 5. On Saturday, DC Willeys Song upended defending champion Ms Dixie in the 1 1/8-mile, $25,000 Grade 3 COBRA Distaff Sponsored by Soaring Eagle Ranch, drawing off by 9 3/4 lengths in 2:05.20. Owned by Jon Henningsgard, trained by Ken Danyluk, and ridden by Travis Wales, DC Willeys Song was runner-up in the race in 2013. Ms Dixie was second and Sand On Fire third. DC Willeys Song completed the 1 1/8 miles in 2:05.20. She now has 6 wins and earnings of over $80,000.

Dream Pearl took the next step in her career by winning the State Fair Arabian H. at Sacramento on July 25. Owned by the partnership of Dorothy Burt, Evelyn Call, Betty Eaton and Cory Soltau, trained by Osman Villalta and ridden by Pedro Flores, the Burning Sand daughter was the heavy favorite and she did not disappoint the bettors. Dream Pearl settled mid-pack and made her move in the stretch. Eventual runner-up Burning Raine came from way off the pace but didn't have quite enough. Dream Pearl won by 2 lengths over Burning Raine with RB Creed in third. She completed the six furlongs in 1:20.15. The chestnut filly, bred by Joe and Betty Gillis, was unraced at three, but is now undefeated in 3 starts as a 4-year-old. This was her first stakes victory.

A good field matched up for the Santa Rosa Arabian S. on August 15 at Santa Rosa. The tough runner Ayers was unhurried early. He made his bid 3 wide through the second turn and ran on steadily to get the lead. He just managed to hold on by 1/2 length over ES Mi Cielo, who did not have the best of trips. ES Mi Cielo chased the pace, had to be taken back and then go 4 wide. He still made a steady late, rally but just missed. Twice Rich finished third. Final time for the one mile race was 1:53.96. Ayers is owned and trained by the husband and wife team of Warren and Helen Shelley. He was ridden to victory by Kyle Frey. With this win, the 9-year-old chestnut stallion has a lifetime record of 20 wins from 57 starts and earnings of over $185,000. This included the exciting Mister Ginoux, a three time Group winner, who was fancied to maintain his unbeaten record despite a poor draw.

but I do enjoy training horses to go long. I like to think that as well as having the quality of horse to win these big group races, I pride myself on getting horses fit and ready to run beyond a mile. The way I was brought up was the American way, so my mentality should be ‘I don’t care if my horse is bred for a mile and half, I’m going to run him over six to start with’, however my view is more European, so if they horse is bred for a mile and a half, that’s what I’m looking for first timeout more often than not, though there is the odd exception. Maiden races over five or six furlongs - I’m not a fan of them because for me they don’t learn anything in them. It’s all about teaching the horse. And once their careers are over? In my opinion anything that the horse can do once it’s finished its racing career is a good thing. If you can home some of these horses that have been good to us and carry on doing something then that’s great. The majority of our horses retire to stud and the colts that are not good enough to stand as stallions for Al Shahania go to other countries which need help with their breeding programmes. Our horses may be well bred, but not what we want, so they are sold as stallions to continue a career elsewhere, some go to the sales and some go on to endurance. We have a shortage of Arabians in the UK, and though France is the leading producer, they are dismissed in some quarters as not being ‘pure’, should we be looking elsewhere for stock? There is a small mixed sale of Thoroughbreds and Arabians in Qatar in April, but the only major sale of Arabians is in France before the Arc, as there are not enough breeders anywhere else in the world who can breed in enough quantity to support a sale. This new group, HARC [Heritage Arabian Racing Club], I don’t want to get into pedigrees, that’s a whole different issue, but essentially it’s too late now, the majority of good Arabs throughout the world are either French-bred or they have some kind of French breeding in them. What are you looking for in an Arabian horse? A dished head with funny ears, big eyes and a high tail? The Arabian Racehorse has never looked like that, it’s only people’s perception – the French Arabian has never looked like that. They look more Thoroughbred than anything else – Desert Bred, French Bred, whatever it may be, that’s not what Arabian racehorses look like. I really want to reiterate my point from earlier which is everybody needs to start working together for the good of the breed. If they don’t work together, whatever any of them are doing right now is pointless, it’s a waste of time. I know everybody’s got issues with each other, but when it comes to the Arabian Horse, there needs to be a unity.
