Words by Sonja Smaldone Traditionally, Bedouins named their foals according to their color, markings, beauty, temperament, courage and personality. It looks like this fate has also met the lives of three amazing Arabian individuals whose names and victories in recent years have been acclaimed in the show rings and by public audiences from all over the world. I refer here to: ES Harir (AJ Dinar by WH Justice x TF Magnums Magic by Magnum Psyche), Excalibur EA (Shanghai EA by WH Justice x Essence of Marwan by Marwan Al Shaqab) and Donna Molta Bella SRA (DA Valentino by Versace x RD Fabreanna by Falcon BHF). Three star-studded horses under the ownership of Al Saqran Stud. Al Saqran Stud is a fast-growing horse reality composed by three farms situated in three different countries - Kuwait Dubai and the U.S.A. - all directed by one man’s passion: Mr. Bessam Al Saqran. His breeding philosophy is humble and, most of all, a practical one. He doesn’t believe he has a special breeding program yet, but
he is trying to have one that is ‘special’. One that can produce amazing foals. Bessam travels a lot to farms around the world to try to find something unique to incorporate into his program. His favorite sire line is the Padrons Psyche - this can be noted both in Excalibur EA’s and HS Harir’s blood pedigree - because for him it is a very prolific one. However, he prefers not use too much of the same. For instance, when it came to Donna Molta Bella, Bessam had managed to cross some old, prestigious Bey-Shah lines with some Ali Jamal ones. At Al Saqran everything got started with the stallion AJ Dinar, the grey WH Justice son who is the foundation stallion in the barns. With him Bessam found the horse that he had always been looking for. AJ Dinar is out of the ethereal mare Deska HJE (ex Solda Deska by AF Don Giovanni) and has had numerous successes in the Gulf region, but it is as a sire that Aj Dinar has made his biggest contribution to Al Saqran

with remarkable progeny of the caliber of ES Harir. Looking to E.S. Hair’s damline, we find more influence from Magnum Psyche (Padrons Psyche x A Fancy Miracle) as Harir is out of TF Magnums Magic, a Magnum Psyche daughter and she is out of Kharnation (Kharben x Pachouli) in turn, thus infusing the Padron (Patron x Odessa) blood even further, as Pachouli (ex PAJ Sildaana by Legendary Nahdaan) is a daughter from this famous line. The grey satin-draped ES Harir is a dynamic addition to the Al Saqran stables and has carried the stud’s banner to incredible successes in Europe and North America. As a four-year old colt, ES Harir was already Gold Champion Senior Stallion at Strohen, Germany, and in Chantilly, France. But his crowning achievement was Gold Champion Senior Stallion at the prestigious All Nations Cup in Aachen. The toughest competition of them all then followed that of the Paris World Championships. Having scored highly in his qualifying class, ES Harir left Paris as Bronze World Champion Stallion, concluding a great year for him, and one that confirmed that he was

the name to talk in the town. Es Harir has a statuesque body and his attractiveness is enhanced by his large, bright eyes and beautiful movement. He started covering mares in the Middle East and his first foals are already making their presence known in the show-ring, especially the three-year old filly SQ Rawan (ex Noor Al Qalb by El Gameer), bred and owned by Al Saqran Stud. She was second in the Ajman and Abu Dhabi shows, which demonstrates great promise for the future. E.S. Harir is definitely one of the most popular young stallions on the showing circuit, and with his strong sire line, is now right in the heart of his journey, both as a sire and a show horse. If ES Harir is the King of Al Saqran, the US-bred Donna Molta Bella SRA is unquestionably the Queen of the broodmare band. When she was foaled in 2012, expectations were very high for her as she was sired by the Grossmans’s six time National Champion, DA Valentino (Versace x DA lLove by Padrons Psyche) and out of the National Champion Mare, RD Fabreanna (Falcon BHF x GF Simply Magic by Magic Dream Cahr). However, Donna Molta

Bella SRA has met and exceeded every expectation, hope and dream for her. As if a master-painter had utilized just the right amount of each precious bloodline, she has emerged as a masterpiece of Alsaqran Stud. She is one of those truly rare mares that equates to greater than the sum of her parents. In Donna Molta Bella all the finest elements of every line of her pedigree are represented in a harmonious blend that could be the most powerful source of perfection the world has yet seen. After all, she boasts an impressive show record: 2013 Region 14 Unanimous Champion Yearling Filly, 2014 US National Champion Junior Filly; 2014 Supreme Champion Filly Arabian Breeders World Cup Las Vegas; 2014 World Championship Junior
Filly Paris under the lead of David Boggs; while in 2016 she started the show season with her Unanimous Gold Champion Mare title at International Arabian Horse Festival Sharjah UAE; Gold Champion Mare at International Arabian Horse Championship Abu Dhabi; Gold Champion Mare at Dubai International Arabian Horse Championship UAE. Globally admired, Donna Molta Bella’s appeal went up another gear at the Paris World Championship as she was crowned World Champion Mare and Best Movement Female with Paolo Capecci. Among his horses in the stables, Bessam Al Saqran has no favorites. As I said, he is most of all a man of passion. Just like a father who is not able to give preferential treatment to any of his children, so is Bas-

sam with his horses. He loves them all with the same intensity, but, time has come for Mr. Bessam to make new projects with the snow white Excalibur EA (Shanghai EA by WH Justice x Essence Of Marwan) that he purchased from Princess Laetitia d’Arenberg of Las Rosas Arabians, in Uruguay, in 2017 and is now under his ownership. This horse is an extraordinary rare specimen. While his type and charisma are clearly marks of WH Justice’s influence, his mother Essence of Marwan has given Excalibur EA his athletic body, his almost perfect legs and a really unique movement, making of him a well balanced and solid horse. Essence of Marwan is a chestnut daughter of the legendary Marwan Al Shaqab out of Elizja by Esta-Ghalil, infusing the pedigree with Polish, Spanish and Egyptian lines influence. Few horses like Excalibur EA have achieved the title of European Triple Crown Champion as he did in 2014 with Tom Shouckens; later winning the 2017 Aachen Championship in the magical hands of Paolo Capecci, and the European Championship at Verona 2017 where he was crowned Gold Champion - Senior Stallions Championship (Class 18), always under the lead of Paolo Capecci; and Gold Champion at Dubai 2017 - Stallions Championship (Class 20). So far Excalibur EA has also proved to be a great sire by producing excellent
progenies, in particular: LR Era de Excalibur out of Expected Beauty, World Gold Champion Filly at the All Nations Cup 2017 in Aachen; the three years old colt Exxalt out of Vesperra, the latter a grand-daughter of Gazal Al Shaqab; last but not the least, Alexxanderr (out of AR Most Irresistible by ML Mostly Padron) one of the hottest young colts on the showing circuit. He was Gold Medal Champion Junior Colt at the Paris World Championship 2017. For the time being, Al Saqran stud has fully entrusted his horses to the Team on Capecci Training Center under the supervision of Paolo and Susy Capecci, with Giampaolo Gubbiotti as their main promoter. Mr. Bessam has already very much proved his worth in the breeding process and to have a smart eye when it comes to horses. His love and enthusiasm for the Arabian breed is simply ‘contagious’. There is really little doubt that under his supervision, Excalibur EA is going to be a crucial turning point in the development of Al Saqran breeding program with many surprises in the barns in the years to come.

WORDS BY: NOEMIE ZELLER AND SONJA SMALDONE
he story of D Seraj made its start on the day of his birth – January, 1st 2015. Eleven months before, two knowledgeable men and crafty breeders, Mr. Mohammed Al Tawheedi, General manager of Dubai Stud and Mr. Abdelaziz Al Marzooqi, CEO, had made the decision to use their exotic stallion FA El Rasheem (Fa El Shawan x Virtuosa) with Dubai Stud’s World Leading Mare, the fleabitten grey Ladi Veronica (Versace x Nisrs Natevka) born in 2002, and herself very well known as a show Champion mare with her stunning move and her perfect and feminine look. Yet, a true expert on the Arabian horse breeding is aware that stories of this kind begin long before. We may say that it all started with the blood of great stallions such as that from the living legend Marwan Al Shaqab or that from the famed BeyShah (Bey-el Bay x Star Ofir by Bask) or the stunning Straight Egyptian Ansata El Nisr, a son of the legendary straight Egyptian stallion, Ansata Ibn Halima (Nazeer x Halima), and out of Ansata Bint Zaafarana (Nazeer x Zaafarana). We can even argue that stories like this started many years, perhaps hundreds of years back in time. But, irrespective of when the story actually began, it all converged into a magic moment when genetic constituents of the highest type led to a magic outcome – in this case – a truly exceptional outcome in the shows potential grey colt D Seraj. This very complete colt with a well-built body, straight tail carriage, arched neck and an incredible refined head with big black eyes and high set eye bones, started the season taking the Gold Champion Yearling colt title at the Ajman Show in 2016 with a sensational score of 93.00 with four 20’s for type and four 20’s for head and neck. He was just spectacular in the very professional hands of Paolo Cappecci and the Dubai Stud team. At the Abu Dhabi International Arabian Horse show, he just repeated his fantastic outing like in Ajman, and left all the visitors of the show speechless, with a top score for a yearling colt and unanimous Gold Champion. He went up another gear getting the Gold medal in Dubai with an incredible score of 93, 40. With four 20’s in type and five 20’s in head and neck but it is not to under valuate the great notes in body and full 16’s in legs. Latest now the entire world was talking about D Seraj, an unstoppable star…
AHM | 20
After his special start in the Middle East, he traveled to Italy to start his training program with the team of Capecci Training Center, under the supervision of Paolo and Susy Capecci and their team, with Giampaolo Gubbiotti as his promoter. His first European outing was at the A Class show in Menton, he just went through it with another unanimous Gold Champion Yearling colt title. This jewel of a colt has continued to ride his path to success, wowing the audiences across the world with his impressive performances, show after show. In the end of September, he headed to the All Nations Cup in Aachen, one of the most precious shows of the year culminating with the Gold Yearling Colt Championship title and an incredible score of 93,54. The year was coming to its end, and, for D Seraj, was only one step missing to be crowned the unbeatable, the World Champion title in Paris. There were meeting the Best of the Best and, of course, D Seraj proved without any doubt to be one of them. With Paolo Cappecci on the lead, he entered the ring putting down an unbelievable show with full blow and trot, aiming 93.58 with not only five 20’s in type, but, amazing scores in head and neck, body, legs and movement. He also brought at home the trophy for the Best Head in his class and was named unanimous World Champion Yearling Colt 2016. If at that time you were listening to the people, they would be talking about him as an Arabian horse in his perfection… D Seraj left Paris at the top of his glory, and became another homebred star for Dubai Arabian Horse Stud. For sure, D Seraj striding victory in Paris contributed to reinforce even further the name of Dubai Stud within Arabian Horse breeding history. For Dubai Stud, that was truly a moment of glory that amply demonstrated that all breeding choices made by Mr. Mohammed Al Tawheedi and Mr. Abdelaziz Al Marzooqi, were right and were now paying off. For the time being, and like many other show colts of his caliber, he has been put to rest from the show scene. He might be covering a tiny group of high selected mares, though in 2018, he will certainly return to Europe to compete for the most coveted titles on earth once more and, for the first time, in Las Vegas in the U.S. Let’s go and see D Seraj…again!

hree things come to mind when I think of Knocke Arabians: one – QR Marc, two – Paul Gheysens and three – that ever-famous K.A. prefix. Paul and Ria Gheysens of Knocke Arabians have established themselves as leaders in the Arabian horse industry and it is mostly thanks to their chief stallion and apple of their eyes, QR Marc (Marwan Al Shaqab x Swete Dreams by Magic Dream CAHR). QR Marc was bred in the U.S. by Quailridge Arabians and made his way to Knocke Arabians as a yearling. After winning numerous titles in the Middle East and Europe, his crowing year came in 2012. I actually like to call it his golden year, because he won gold at every show he competed in; that year culminated in him being named Gold World Champion Stallion – a dream that the Gheysens waited quite a while for to come true. It is no secret that QR Marc is one of the leading sires in today’s industry; he has sired champions on 5 continents and in over 30 countries. From Las Vegas to Paris to Brazil to Australia; there is a piece of Marc on every corner of the globe.
AHM | 38
However, it was the Polish State Studs that truly exploited the true potential within QR Marc. With that said, we all know just how successful QR Marc has been with the Polish mares – not only did he give rise to a new generation, he brought forth individuals that have reached ultimate stardom. While Zigi Zana, Piacenza, Emarc and Palatina are all fine examples of QR Marc’s Polish get, the crowning jewels in the house of Marc are definitely the Las Vegas ABWC Gold, European Gold and U.S. Reserve National Champion, Equator, World Gold, European Gold, Las Vegas ABWC Gold and U.S. National Champion, Wieza Mocy and Las Vegas ABWC, Polish National, Scottsdale Supreme and U.S. National Champion, Pogrom. Mr. Gheysens and his entire team have been able to harness the genotypic and phenotypic power that QR Marc possesses. Year after year, the foal crops at Knocke Arabians are filled to the brim with superstars. Be it with their own mares or mares that they have leased, the foals are always of the same high-end standard. The mare band at Knocke Arabians is predominant-

Knocke Arabians has retained. They have taken the best their parents had to offer; both have that signature Polish trot with the refinement and finesse that comes from QR Marc. FS Magnum’s Madonna or the black diamond from Africa as she is dubbed has been bred to QR Marc every year with major success. Magnums Rose is a stunning dark bay mare that was named Belgian National Gold Champion Senior Mare twice. Her sisters, the chestnut Magnum’s Tulip and bay Marc’s Star K.A. are exquisite mares that have outstanding track records in the show ring. Magnum’s Tulip was named Gold Champion at the UKIAHS and the European Champion, Magnum’s Star K.A. was the stud’s first homebred filly to win gold at a title show. However, it their chestnut brother, Magnum’s Volcan K.A., that is the shining star in this family. Apart from winning Gold Champion at the Belgian National and Bruges International Show, Magnum’s Volcan K.A. was one of the high sellers at the 2017 EQUATOR ( QR MARC x EKLIPTYKA)

To date, Knocke Arabians most successful crosses with QR Marc have been with the Polish Reserve National Champion, Espadrilla (Monogramm x Emanacja) and the All Nations Cup Gold Champion, FS Magnum’s Madonna (Magnum Psyche x Tai Bey Brittney). Espadrilla gave rise to one of the most successful show horses that Knocke Arabians has ever bred – Equiborn K.A. The second is Newton K.A.; he is a masculine but still ever beautiful version of Nadira K.A. When bred to the Blommeröd bred Migracja (Gazal Al Shaqab x Mandala), QR Marc brought two bay bombshells to life. Magenta K.A. is an extravagant mare with bold movement; she was named Bronze Champion Junior Filly at the Tulip Cup and Gold Champion Junior Filly at the Prague Intercup. Her full brother, Mikado K.A. is a sight for sore eyes; his long, luscious mane and undeniable beauty always make for the perfect picture. Knocke Arabians has retained Mikado K.A. and he is one of the young sires at the farm. His daughter, Zenobia K.A. (x Zafia d’Elzenwalle), is a complete individual and is an indication of the potential that Mikado K.A. possesses. Orfa D’Arab K.A. (QR Marc x Oso Axotica) is one of Knocke Arabian’s finest QR Marc daughters. She is a crimson queen that commands attention whenever she enters a show ring. that sets her apart. Orfa D’Arab K.A. was named Tulip Cup Silver Champion and Bruges International Bronze Champion as well as won first place at the All Nations Cup and World Championships. Another fantastic QR Marc daughter at Knocke is the bay, Sylvatica K.A. (x Sharm DS). Sylvatic K.A. was named Gold Champion Junior Filly at the Wels International and Silver Champion Junior Filly at the Chantilly Arabian Breeders Cup. El Extasa K.A. SHAH MASHIMA (WH JUSTICE X MINUTKA) OWNER KNOCKE ARABIANS know that it is vital to add a primary or foundation layer of paint before adding any detail. It takes time to create each layer so that in the end they complement each other and ultimately create a masterpiece. With every breeding, you either add or take away a layer of beauty; you either come closer of move further away from you version of the ideal Arabian. By sourcing only the
The stallion that Paul Gheysens has chosen to add his next layer of beauty and build upon his foundation is one that has a global impact. His name is synonymous with success, authentic Arabian type and the highest of quality. Artists use him as their muse; his name evokes awe and respect whenever it is mentioned; he has traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Middle East and Europe. He is none other than WH Justice (Magnum Psyche x Vona Sher-Renea) also known as “The Champion Maker.” WH Justice has been used in many esteemed establishments around the world to either add the next layer of beauty or create their foundation stock. It was Om El Arab and Al Shaqab Stud that used WH Justice to add their next layer of beauty and it was AlJassimya Farm that made use of him to build their own foundation. Why do so many flock towards WH Justice when looking for their next layer?

The answer is simple – natural, authentic, unaltered beauty and type. WH Justice is a gobsmacking individual whose eyes alone will captivate your heart. It is a known fact that Knocke Arabians is the only place on earth that is so highly saturated with QR Marc blood, hence another reason to lease WH Justice – to dilute some of that with the Spanish and Russian blood that WH Justice carries. The WH Justice and QR Marc daughter cross holds a lot potential for Knocke Arabians. Just like Padrons Psyche did with the Bey Shah daughters and QR Marc did with the Ekstern daughters, WH Justice and QR Marc and going to complement each other beautifully. Couple those traits with WH Justice’s “20-scoring” type and powerful movement and you have yourself a recipe that is destined for success. And let’s not forget the immense dose of legendary blood that both these stallions bring with them; Marwan Al Shaqab, Gazal Al Shaqab, Magic Dream CAHR, Magnum Psyche, El Shaklan and a slew of other icons will all play a part in this new cross. Both Paul and Ria are hoping that the WH Justice foals that their QR Marc daughters will bring into this world will be everything they’ve ever wished for. All breeders know that WH Justice daughters are collector’s items in our industry; they are jewels that should be protected under lock and key for they are priceless. They are some of greatest modern day broodmares the industry has ever had. Being a connoisseur of the finer things in life, Paul has his own special collection of WH Justice daughters which include Las Vegas ABWC Gold Champion Aria Athena, Almyra De Nautiac, Shah Mahsima, Prisma De Lafon, Odalis De Nautiac and the two time Gold French National Champions Harmattan Thalya and Jalicia De Nautiac. Paul and Ria’s “blue-eyed” boy, QR Marc, was named Leading Sire at the World Championships in 2015 after his sire’s seven year reign. And WH Justice was named Leading Sire at the World Championships last year. Knocke Arabians is currently housing two of the world’s leading sires; imagine the possibilities when greatness of this magnitude is brought together. The union of WH Justice and QR Marc is going to herald greatness, beauty and sucess of cosmic proportions. And as Knocke Arabians works hard on adding their next layer, we can be confident that this next layer is definitely going to be not one, but two steps closer to the masterpiece known as the Knocke Arabian.

By Nakashen Valaitham With its hypnotic, intense green colour, alluring beauty and royal appeal, the emerald has been a gem of fascination in many cultures for over six thousand years. By combining beryllium, aluminium, silicon and oxygen, Mother Nature brings these brilliant gems to life depositing them mainly in Colombia, Brazil and Zambia among other countries. Using her vast years of experience and discerning eye for beauty, Christine Jamar of Jadem Arabians, like Mother Nature, combined two of the industry’s greatest specimens to bring forth a ‘Belgian emerald’ of equal value and beauty, but different in nature. Christine’s emerald, just like the piece Richard Burton gave Elizabeth Taylor, has traveled the world and earned admirers all over and his name is Emerald J. Born in 2010, Emerald J is genotypically and phenotypically one of the most valuable additions to the global Arabian horse industry. Emerald J’s authentic Arabian type,
AHM | 56
head that looks like it was cut by the finest lapidaries and distinct refinement has earned him 20s in rings all over the world. His neck, long and elegant like that of a swan, flows into a strong shoulder. A short and level topline and correct tail set all produce a picture of balance and harmony, one so close to the breed standard. An outrageously correct and gorgeous exterior like this is due to superior genetics that are made up of layers of beauty, aristocracy and downright great breeding. Emerald J is made in the image of his World Champion sire, QR Marc (Marwan Al Shaqab x Swete Dreams). QR Marc is undeniably one of Marwan Al Shaqab’s most accomplished sons in both the show ring and breeding barn. Being a son of the living legend and three-time World Champion Marwan Al Shaqab, QR Marc inherited a sire line to the great Nazeer through the archetypal stallion, Gazal Al Shaqab. QR Marc’s

dam, Swete Dreams, is a daughter of one of the leading living sires of broodmares, Magic Dream CAHR (Ali Jamaal x The Dreamspinner). Through U.S. National Champion Ali Jamaal, Magic Dream CAHR adds the second cross to straight Egyptian legend Ruminaja Ali. As a sire, QR Marc has shattered records and it is what he produced with the Polish mares, horses like Wieza Mocy and Equator, that garnered him global success. Emerald J was also the result of the QR Marc x Polish mare cross and as we can see, the result is outstanding. The Polish mare that Emerald J proudly calls dam is praised as being one of the most beautiful, near perfect and most winning mares to grace the face of the breed; and she is none other
than twice Polish National Champion, twice Dubai International Champion and European Triple Crown winner, Emandoria (Gazal Al Shaqab x Emanda). Whether it be on paper, photo, video or real life, Emandoria’s authentic Arabian type, ethereal presence and record-breaking list of achievements has made us all swoon over her time and time again. Just like her son, Emandoria is the combination of two World Champions and has proven to be better than the sum of them. It is through the glorious Emandoria that Emerald J gets a second cross to the celebrated Gazal Al Shaqab, which in turn brings the second cross to the U.S. National Champion Kajora and Egyptian Event Champion Anaza El Farid as well as a third cross to Ruminaja Ali. Emandoria’s dam, AHM | 61
Polish National and World Champion Mare, Emanda is an ‘old world’ goddess who is daughter of the 1995 Polish National Champion Stallion, Ecaho. Ecaho’s iconic dam, twice World Champion, Etruria, was one of Director Krzyształowicz’s most cherished mares and the very first Polish horse shown at the Salon Du Cheval in Paris. Apart from huge doses of type and depths of cosmic beauty, Emandoria has blessed Emerald J with a tail female line that has stood the test of time; one synonymous with aristocracy of the highest level. From Emanacja-Emigracja-EmisjaEspada-Eskapada-to the foundress of the famed Michalow E-line Estokada, this string of Michalow Polish National Champion pearls found through Emanda are some of the most valuable and sought after mares in Polish breeding history. They add substance, depth, quality, appeal and a breeding prowess to this pedigree that is second to none. It is evident that Emerald J’s pedigree is layered with

legends, encrusted with icons and topped to the brim with defying beauty. All of this has made him a gem of the finest cut, clarity, colour and carat. Like the many famous gems that have been sold to kings, queens and other elite individuals, Emerald J has been on a journey, passing through the hands of some of the most famed studs and shining bright at show rings around the globe. In 2012, under the Al Jalawiya Stud name, owned by HRH Prince Turki bin Fahad bin Jalawi Al Saud, Emerald J dazzled the crowds and was named Gold Champion Junior Colt at the prestigious Al Khalediah Arabian Horse Festival in Saudi Arabia and Elran Arabian Cup in Belgium. He culminated that year with Top Ten honors at the Salon du Cheval in Paris. In 2014, Emerald J embarked a on a new journey when he was acquired by Al Muawd Stud of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and what followed was pure magic. Emerald J made his show ring debut
for Al Muawd Stud at the 2015 Dubai International Arabian Horse Championship where he created a stir and left a lasting impression on the industry. Like an emerald that is worn by royalty or displayed in premier jewellery houses, Emerald J was the main attraction and his flawless, spine-chilling display of beauty had almost everyone lauding over him. Dubai International titles are a common commodity in Emerald J’s family as QR Marc took home the gold in 2012 and Emandoria, being the glorious mare that she is, took home the gold in 2013 and 2014.
Emerald J continued this ‘golden’ family tradition by being named Dubai International Gold Champion Senior Stallion for his elated entourage. What made this win both significant and monumental was the fact that Emerald J’s son, Gallardo J, was named Gold Champion Junior Colt at the show and proved that Dubai International Gold is a must-have in this family. After this, Emerald J took a break from the show ring so that his genetic power could be harnessed in the breeding barn. Almost two years after this, however, Emerald J made his comeback at the 2017 Prince

Not only did Emerald J take home the Gold Champion Senior Stallion title, but four of his foals took home titles at the show as well. Emerald J is phenotypically and genotypically any breeder’s dream and the gems he is turning out are priceless and of the same cut, colour, clarity and carat as their sire– if not better. Back at his mother stud, Emerald J has given Christine Jamar a collection of foals that are out of this world. When crossed with Christine’s genetically powerful Polish herd, in his first foal crop of 2013, Emerald J brought to life European Gold Champion Mounira J (x Magnficent Lady J), St. Oedenrode Gold Junior Filly and Best In Show Dalia J (x Danuta), AHO Breeder’s Championship Gold Champion Paris J (x Palabra) and of course, his most famous and accomplished foal to date, Gallardo J (x Gomera J). He ended the year with a bang and in turn elevated the name of his sire by winning the coveted European Triple Crown consisting of gold at the All Nations Cup, European Championships and World Championships for proud owner HH Sheikh Ammar Bin Humaid Al Nuami of Ajman Stud. The 2014 foal crop also gave rise to priceless gems all over the world, some of which include Manebrio Silver Champion Grace J (x Gomera J), Qatar International Bronze Champion Hajer Al Muawd (x Primera), Verona Silver Champion Melody J (x Maya J) and AHO

Two more foals from the 2016 foal crop, as well as his 2013 son, Mansour Al Jalawiyah (x Gypsy Love NA) took home titles at this show, proving the inherent capabilities of Emerald J as a sire. The 2017 foal crop is, as usual, of the highest quality and is promising to bring forth dazzling individuals that will continue in their father’s winning ways. One to keep an eye out for in the future is a beautiful colt born at Al Muawd Stud out of the Marquis CAHR daughter Maysaa Al Khalediah. Harry Winston is known for their affinity for the rarer, more sought after things in life, like the world’s largest known flawless vivid blue diamond. And in 2014, when the company purchased this gem for a recordbreaking price, they knew that they were adding one of the most desirable and most unique gems to their collection and that it would ultimately set them apart and put them in a league of their own. In the same way, Christine & Guy Jamar knew that Emerald J is indeed a one of a kind gem that they truly needed back. In an industry that is flooded with “duplicates,” Emerald J is a rare and valuable find for the discerning connoisseur; the unfathomable genetic prowess that he possesses is a quality seen in very few and has beyond doubt put him in a league of his own. And so, in April 2017, Christine and Guy bought their priceless creation back; Emerald J was going home; the crown jewel of Jadem Arabians has returned to his birthplace. Now set on a pedestal in a glass cabinet, also known as the stallion barn at Jadem Arabians in Belgium, Emerald J is on display for the world to witness beauty in its finest, to

know greatness of the highest level and to experience perfection in the flesh. Emerald J is poised and ready for this new chapter with his creator. A chapter that we can undoubtedly believe will be filled with more priceless gems being born around the world, more history making moments, more spectacular success,
and more dazzling displays of unaltered, authentic Arabian beauty; a chapter we all await with bated breath and one we will definitely read over and over; a chapter where the crown jewel will shine brighter than he ever has before.

P
owerful images of an ancestral practice, falconry on horseback in particular, bring together from time immemorial the relationships between the man and the Salukis dogs, the hawk and the horses – first and foremost with the purebred Arabian horse. They all depict situations full of burning passion for these three elements of such a dry region of the planet. Men have always been very impressed by the performance of raptors in the air and by the sharpness of their lines to the extent that many civilizations integrated them into their cultural heritage in all ways. Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan, Founder of the United Arab Emirates, was the strongest supporter of this practice on horseback. It is widely acknowledged that, in the countries of the Middle East, hawks have long been used during the war by their fierce and valiant horsemen. As well utilized to hunt the evening primrose, the houtarde or the gazelle of the desert, these powerful birds would be trained to attack the enemy’s eyes, mainly the knights from the Crusades in that historical period so full of conquests. A belief still supported by locals, it is then the use of a lure and chaperone. Since then, all these techniques AHM | 84
have allowed for an increased use of the astonishing flying skills of the birds of prey. To the same extent of the purebred Arabian horse - in a time of strong values and high principles – noble and powerful family crests became popular and many gyrfalcons and peregrine falcons served as important relational means between tribes or neighboring countries or valuable gifts that honored their owners. The enthusiasm of passionate riders has always sprung from the natural world, from the discovery of large areas of freedom that provide unforgettable moments, and despite a long period of animal protection policy, concerning raptors in particular, there still is a growing interest in and pleasure for species that have been around us for centuries. Especially as regards falconry, the awareness joint-campaigns promoted by many associations from Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, France, Morocco, Mongolia, Qatar, Slovakia, Syria, have been rewarded in November 2010 with the recognition by UNESCO as ‘World Intangible Heritage’, an act of great importance motivated
by the need to preserve such ‘in-flight hunting art’ that has been recognized as one of the oldest in the history of human civilization. To team up with these majestic sky hunters, the Arabian horse must be prepared. Ideally, on a first session, this can be initiated with a foal that will have to familiarize with the presence of a bird flying around him; the reactions from the colt will be instructive to envisage the most appropriate training program for him. Skilled falconers will take position at the horse feet-level, on both sides of the animal at standstill and with no bridles so to
avoid any stress effect. With them, they will carry a medium size bird such like, for instance, the Harris hawk buzzard (Parabuteo unicinctus) with which they will perform the callbacks rite from glove to glove. When this practice is being strengthened, it can easily be repeated for about two months; the horse is then led with the halter, the glove is placed on his withers together with the bird while the fluttering of the feathers will no longer frighten him. There will follow a complementary training work with the ridden horse, and some part of the exercise being pretty much the same as the one practiced on foot: the flight of the bird

viewing angle that will not scare the horse. This delicate exercise must be repeated at least for three weeks to test the docility of the horse. It is important to have a purebred Arabian full of energy, not to mention that he must work at ease for his necessary muscular gymnastics and his moral fiber. Yet, they also represent an opportunity for leisure activities at major local festivals. On the contrast, in today’s Middle East countries where falconry

is practiced in all comfort inside of all-terrain vehicles it is truly heartbreaking to note that – despite being an activity deeply rooted into the genes of local population - those same countries possessing the majority of the most beautiful Arabian horses of the world do not actually use them in what it could turn up to be an entertaining sport close to their culture and suitable to sandy grounds. In almost all countries of the Arabian Gulf area, however, many events or in-flight hunting competitions are organized every year, but, unfortunately, the participant horses are not enough or even absent from the program. In the huge region of Maghreb, a country with centuries-old traditions, in the Kingdom of Morocco, and more precisely in
AHM | 88
El Jadida, inhabitants still maintain the practice of falconry on horseback. Every year in August the great Moussem of this province gathers no less than a thousand riders, a well-known event in the world as its fervor and spectacle are simply great. However, horseback falconry, which is accessible to all adult riders, has its own codes and international and national authorities are in charge of securing compliance with a thousand-yearold tradition. Everyone must know that all birds have a registration; each must also be holder of a registration number within facilities specialized into the activity and respect the molting period of the birds ranging from mid-spring to the end of August. Good equipment suitable for falconry on horseback is also needed; first of all, in supporting the hawks, the ‘koubbile’ chaperon is a cache that shall always be placed gently on the head of the bird so that it can remain in a calm environment. It must be made of soft leather material to equip the head of the hawk gently, so you don’t suffocate or damage its plumage. The rider will wear on his left arm the glove named ‘saâba’ made of very thick leather that covers large part of his forearm, thus avoiding too much contact with the extremely powerful and sharp talons of the raptor; during horse hunting this hand serves as a perch. The lure called ‘jiaba’ is a fake prey often made with ordinary birds wings that has a cavity in which a small amount of meat is put. This tool of the falconer rider is very useful during the sessions of falconry, especially to call back the hawk when it is in full flight.
The falconer -rider will always make sure to maintain the confidence of his bird, paying attention to his equipment, his laces ‘sbouks’, his hunting bag ‘mezoued’ containing all the stuff the rider – falconer finds it useful. In Europe and in the World there exist ‘Animal Parks’ with more or less interest in what one could sometimes define as falconry areas for an understanding of this art, where competent professionals get themselves organized by creating spaces for presentations intended to value the full potential of birds within a certain educational function. Among these top-quality establishments in Europe, given the great diversity of the species presented, Master-falconer Mr. Bernard Bailly established at the Amnéville Zoo in Lorraine a beautiful demonstration space which is a perfect example of this activity that comes along with beautiful paintings on traditional falconry on horseback. Unfortunately, every year, mainly in Europe, several equestrian shows are put up with insufficient information thus creating inaccurate performances on the subject of falconry on horseback; many of them are more or less successful though they still manage to attract many curious. We must be proud of the very good combination of the Arabian horse with falconry. Passionate riders are more numerous in what it is a very great sport in its own right, as well an unlimited natural pleasure that remains more than ever an art. Rider - trainer - falconer Mr. Hassen Bouchakour who was trained by great masters of the discipline, offers presentations that are worthy of this tradition. Since ancient times, this immense art has been represented in important pictorial and sculptural works to which the greatest masters and world artists have devoted themselves also assisted by high-quality animal photographers.

he word magnificence is a noun that means: the quality of being magnificent. And if we look at the meaning of magnificent, we see it is an adjective that means: extremely beautiful, elaborate, or impressive. In the Arabian horse industry, there is a stallion that embodies the word magnificent. As he trots his mane dances to the tune of the wind; his lustrous bay coat plays with the sun’s rays as he strikes the air. His flared nostrils, pricked ears, perfectly dished head and timeless expression stops one in their tracks – his magnificence radiates far beyond the horizon; his name is Kanz Albidayer. Kanz Albidayer was bred by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saud Al Qasimi of Albidayer Stud in Sharjah, UAE. From the day that he was born, it was evident that Kanz Albidayer was destined for magnificence and that superstardom was only a few steps away. Whether it is in a photo, a video, a live stream recording or in the flesh, Kanz Albidayer is truly a sight to behold. His exotic head is adorned with expressive eyes that are set at the perfect distance apart and ears that are short and shaped like the tail of a scorpion. His neck is strong and his body is solid; and when he moves, he engages, lifting his legs high off the ground and keeping his tail over his back. This type of striking beauty and magnificence was passed on to Kanz Albidayer through his illustrious genotype. Kanz Albidayer’s pedigree is a magical blend of the breed’s greatest individuals;

each generation is filled to the brim with beauty, quality and success. Kanz Albidayer is sired by Ajman Moniscione (WH Justice x Anthea Moniscione), a stallion know as the “master painter of living art.” This exotic, chestnut stallion got his nickname because of the outrageously beautiful foals he has been

producing and Kanz Albidayer is definitely one of Ajman Moniscione’s most spectacular and successful masterpieces. The uber-exotic type, large, expressive

eyes and refinement that both Ajman Moniscione and Kanz Albidayer possess were all blessings given to them by their sire and grandsire respectively, “The Champion Maker” himself, WH Justice (Magnum Psyche x Vona Sher-Renea). WH Justice brings with him the blood of U.S. National Champions Magnum Psyche, Padrons Psyche and Padron and through his

dam comes a line to the breed icon, El Shaklan. Ajman Moniscione’s dam, Anthea Moniscione (Padrons Ghibli x Armonia), adds a huge dose of Russian blood to this pedigree. Through her sire she adds a second cross to Padron and through her dam we find lines to the Russian legends, Negatraz and Nariadni. Kan Albidayer’s dam, DL Marielle (Marwan Al Shaqab x RGA Kouress), is a full sister to World and U.S. National Champion Marajj. She is a daughter of the incomparable, three time World Champion, Marwan Al Shaqab (Gazal Al Shaqab x Little Liza Fame). From Gazal Al Shaqab to Anaza El Farid to Ruminaja Ali to Morafic, the immortal Marwan Al Shaqab brings with him the highly influential Nazeer sire line. Marwan Al Shaqab also brings with him the blood of U.S. National Champion Fame VF and in turn Bey Shah through his dam, the Al Shaqab Stud foundation mare, Little Liza Fame. Both Marwan Al Shaqab and his sire, Gazal Al Shaqab are living legends and icons that will forever be revered for the impact they have had, currently have and will continue to have on the
breed. DL Marielle’s dam is an aristocrat of the highest form; she is RGA Kouress (Kouvay Bey x Angophora). RGA Kouress is a classic beauty that is gifting the breed with exquisite individuals one after the other. It is RGA Kouress’s sire that adds a second cross to Bey Shah as well as a cross to U.S. National Champion, Aladdinn. Her dam, Angophora, is sired by the Polish super-sire Eukaliptus and is out of Belbowrie Baskana, a daughter of Bask – the stallion known to single-handedly change the
AHM | 105
face of the breed. With such a power packed interior, Kanz Albidayer was bound to have such an ultra-gorgeous exterior. And it is that same beauty, correctness, refinement and overall depth of quality that was bestowed upon him by his ancestors that enabled Kanz Albidayer to become a show ring sensation. Kanz Albidayer was shown extensively as a junior by Scott Allman; together they reached the top and became well known names in the winner’s circle. Kanz Albidayer made his debut in December of 2009 at the Sharjah Arabian Horse Festival Mayahdah Albidayer where he was named unanimous Gold Champion Junior Colt; and from there, the golds just kept streaming in. Kanz Albidayer started off 2010 at the Ajman National C Show where he was awarded Gold Champion Junior Colt as well as highest scoring horse of the show. After being named Silver Champion Junior Colt at Nisreen Albidayer the Abu Dhabi International Show, Kanz Albidayer went on to win two Gold Junior Colt titles back to back; one at the Sharjah International Show and the other at the Dubai International Show. After dominating the Middle East, it was time for Kanz Albidayer to take on Europe. At the Mediterranean & Arab Countries Arabian Horse Championships, Kanz Albidayer was named Silver Champion Junior Colt. And later on, at the European Futurity, he was named Champion Yearling Colt AHM | 106
and Overall Futurity Champion. In 2011, Kanz Albidayer went back to the Dubai International show arena to defend his title, but was named Silver Champion Junior Colt. Then in 2012, as a beautiful three year old, he competed in the Middle East for the last time as a junior. He went on to win the Gold Junior Colt title at the Abu Dhabi International Show and earned his third Dubai International Show title after being named Gold Champion Junior Colt. After such a successful show career, Kanz Albidayer was ready to take on the role that many were waiting for – his role as a sire. The Kanz Albidayer foals are easy to spot in a crowd; their sire stamps them with his signature look; it is a look of luxury, superiority and magnificence. The foals all have their sire’s extreme face, perfectly shaped ears and expressive eyes. Where best to start naming the Kanz Albidayer foals then where he was bred. Scottsdale International Gold Champion Yearling Filly and Las Vegas Silver Champion Yearling Filly, while this year she has started her show season with the Silver Medal at the Ajman Show. Two colts, both out of Marwan Al Shaqab daughters, Elle Ammar (x Allamara MA) and El Ettore (x Dena Kay FF) are fine representatives of the ‘Kanz Albidayer brand’ in the U.S. Both have shown successfully in regional arenas and the future can only get brighter. Kanz Albidayer’s most successful foal to date is Luigi (x Lolita). Luigi is an outstanding, bay stallion that was bred by Danielle Saelens in Belgium and is owned by Al Shahania Stud. As a yearling Luigi was named Gold Champion at the Tulip Cup and at Vichy. He was named Silver Champion Yearling Colt at the European Championships and Bronze Yearling Colt at the All Nations Cup and World Championships. As a two year old, Luigi added the Silver Champion Colt

MT Mantra
Two Kanz Albidayer daughters in Europe, one grey and the other bay, both hailing from small breeding programs, have shown successfully. JL Azamah (x JB Aurora) is a glorious grey filly that was named Gold Champion at the Tulip Cup and Silver Champion at the Scandinavian Open. MT Mantra (x Mandalai Blu FA) is a beautiful bay that was named Bronze Champion at the Strohen and UKIAHS Shows and she was recently sold at the Schoukens Training Centre auction. Seranza (x Evening Serenade) is a sensational Kanz Albidayer daughter that was bred in the U.S. by Michael Byatt and is currently owned by Mohamad Shekh Sliman of Al Sheikh Stud. She is the reigning 2017 Bronze Champion Yearling Filly at the Las Vegas Arabian Breeders World Cup, Strohen International and All Nations Cup Shows. With a magnificent exterior, a magnificent show record and foals of magnificent proportions, I can with confidence say that Kanz Albidayer is the epitome of magnificence. Kanz Albidayer has been passed through the hands of the greatest horsemen and women in our industry; from Scott Allman to Johanna Ullstrom and to Michael Byatt to name a few. They have all helped shape and mould his career to what it is today. The magnificence that they have lent to Kanz Albidayer has only added to his own, the question is, will there be more to come? And the answer is yes, because magnificence is in his destiny.

INSIDE THE SALON DU CHEVAL OF EL JADIDA
El Jadida with the participation of the best riders of the discipline, this being a technical program set up by famous French trainer Marcel Rozier, a man in that art.
At its third year, and, as part of the events at the Salon du Cheval of El Jadida, this show headquartered inside the new ‘Parc des Expositions in Azemmour’ wanted to be a showcase of the horse in Morocco in all his differentiation. For centuries, the Moroccan territory has been the Kingdom of horses bred and preserved like hidden treasures in the most remote villages, an aspect of the living heritage of a civilization that has always used mainly the ‘Barbary’ breed in all actions of everyday life. Such horses from the Greater Maghreb area, including mainly Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, used to enjoy more glorious times in the past, being the most representative breed of indigenous people in that region of northern Africa. The most representative image Europeans have kept in their mind is that of the fantasias (festivals) that would enthralled them by their color and the fervor of thousands of horsemen rushing into crazy races that would shake the black powder inside their guns; the most beautiful one being undoubtedly ‘Moussem’ held in Amghar, near El Jadida, that takes place every year at the beginning of August. Nowadays, although the ‘Tbourida’ still retains a good place in the various provinces of the Kingdom culminating with the annual gathering of the prestigious Sorbas. Entirely re-organized with powerful and magnificent Barbary horses, it is a real shame that this race is no longer brought to the fore within a more traditional activity during breeding competitions with high promotional index. Unquestionably, its merit was to set up an international competition within the framework of the Salon El Jadida, which could do it better. In this context, with regard to such race, which is the symbol of the genetic heritage of a country still having magnificent specimens up to 50% of the herd estimated at 300,000 subjects against 35% in Algeria and 15% in Tunisia, this horse is deeply present in the heart of all Moroccans as he is truly a national identity regardless of the environment of stay. Having placed it at an international level, under the aegis of the O.M.C.B., created in 1987 in order to support, divulgate and promote the Berber horse on an international scale, the International Berber Horse Championship 2017 gathered only few foreign competitors from Algeria, France and Luxembourg. Horses were not in good condition despite the granted facilities. Such an event was not at all efficiently highlighted and provided passionate about these prominent horses with an unfortunate image.
THE TBOURIDA
A second target of interest for visitors runs it second place, but it does first in the heart of all Moroccans. This is undoubtedly the Grand Prix of His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Tbourida that brings together 15 Sorbas with their 17 knights from all the provinces of the country. According to the purest

tradition, they find shelter under caïdales tents providing with a striking spectacle of a thousand Barbary horses grouped on a ground mixed with straw. The Tbourida is a traditional equestrian art that is still considered as a major cultural heritage these days because it is now part of a highlevel sports activities work schedule alongside with its regional and national competitions leading to the Grand Prix of the Salon du Cheval of El Jadida. The wonderful show offered on this four-day Championship deserves to list out a ranking as it follows: 1 Sorba El Fatehy Aziz - Beni Mellal area 2 Sorba Benkhadda El Arbi - Beni Mellal area 3 Sorba Add Mhamed - Casablanca Settat area 4 Sorba Nassiri Toufiq - Casablanca Settat area 5 Sorba Laaraj Faraji – L’ Oriental area AHM | 116
ENDURANCE
A novelty put in place last year, with the support of the United Arab Emirates, in the person of Sheikh Sultan
Bin Zayed Al Nahyan who finances all endowments; it was a revival of endurance events on 40, 60 and 80 km in the beautiful middle Atlas region on horseback riding trails of the ‘Ifrane Cedar Forest’. On October 6th and 7th, 2017, riders of the discipline were simply delighted by a warm atmosphere that deserves to be highlighted. However, also on this occasion we could observe the participation of many riders belonging to military institutions and that cannot be considered as amateurs when compared with the private ones who, as for them, had full merit of seen top places being taken AHM | 117

The field supervisor ought to think more about this matter; it is necessary and urgent since Morocco deserves better. Under the auspices of the A.H.O. - and with no particular euphoria at the end of it - the 6th Breeders’ Cup brought together nearly sixty participants born and bred in Morocco. At the Championship, the panel of judges - who might also discuss that – awarded the winning positions as follows: Yearling Fillies Championship Gold - Soultana De Dream by Kanz Al Bidayer & Mz Oa Sham Sabbah – Mohamed Mgharfaoui Silver - Shireen Mams by Galik Conquestador & Malawi – Tarik Mamoun Bronze - Issan Malach by Rayyan Al Naif & SL Rashida – Mostafa Benlafkih Fillies Championship Gold - Firdaous L Azri by Imperial Bisaam & Nassira Gam – Youssef Azri Silver - Nefertity by Amalfi de Nautiac & Dona Kristina – Abdelmajid Aboukhadija Bronze - Marjana Menara stud by Exotic Sadiq & Shahada Im4Bahja – Karim Benlafikh Mares Championship Gold - Etqane Bouznika 2013 by Ts Apolo & Miss Navarrone – Haras Royal de Bouznika AHM | 118

An International A show that was set up, in his times, by Dr. Vet. Fdail Lahcen in a golden period of the event. It is fair to say that this competition did not get the success that one would expect in a country that is experiencing massive growth of the breed. Perhaps, this has been happening too fast to control it properly; in fact, we must note that the livestock as a whole was much too imported from outside countries to the detriment of Moroccan strains that were still able to produce with the reputation that has long been recognized to them. If we take into consideration the participation in the Regional Competitions of Marrakech (74 exhibitors) Meknes (89) El Jadida (112) Bouznika (66) which are getting bigger from year to year with nearly 750 registered horses, it will be soon necessary to act upon the education of new judges - local experts who have the required skills to officiate and secure a good development of the sector in Morocco, to restrict the participation of judges that are always the same (and who have become shareholders), thus bringing no modernity by their judgements. Fashion is somewhat temporary, involving many issues and disagreements among the countries in the international sector. Here, the European Horses Shows Organization has become a center of fierce disputes, even about its legitimacy. The technical counsellor of the A-Competition
of El Jadida should evolve by rethinking the selection process of the judges who down there, too, are sharply criticized; everyone can conceive the business according

Bronze - Picasso EA 2010 by Padrons Psyche & Nebaska Kossack breeder Equuq Arabians – owner Tarik Mamoun, Morocco CONCLUSION The 10th Edition of the El Jadida Horse Show ended rather successfully. The Organizers had taken up the same theme as for the 1st 2008 ‘Salon of Pride and Passion’, for which the world community - kindly invited to follow its realization - could have claimed more consistent bonfires in its programming, given the importance of the anniversary calendar. A comment heard here and there also evoking new creative frameworks to recruit.
It is still missing there an extra facility to host more international exhibitors of a wide variety of products; it is surprising to note the lack of suppliers in the races sector which nevertheless find themselves inside of an important field of actions put in place by the supervisory body with its all-pervasive protection policy of equines. The luxurious institutional stands take up too much room inside and actually relegated outside the facility most of the exhibitors, the sight of which was detrimental to the harmony of the places. The highlight of the 2017 show - for its novelty - was a varied show on the career of the Tbourida that took place at the end of the week enthralling huddled audiences
in the stands. They showed their joy by admiring in the open air what it is usually held inside the facility with its lack of space; for sure a great initiative to renew, and why not into a fully-converted commercial space... For the evening show on the great career of the Salon, the presentation by z z Serra Camps with his two purebred Arabian horses was for many attendants a moment of waking dream just like the Equestrian School of Cordoba that made a presentation of very-high quality riding subjects; both performances alike overshadowed military formations once again much too present at the show and that, however, have poor technical skills; a much harder training is needed for next year. Sincere and heartfelt congratulations to the children who are generously welcomed in large swarms - in my opinion they are indeed the Masters of the Feast. It is such a thrill to hear them singing along the anthem of their country to the fullest when the winner of a competition is put in the spotlight, that is sort of happiness that heals; thank you to the village that has been dedicated to them and still needs to grow. Thinking about young people is a duty indeed. Our hearts go out also to the many technical teams that work away from the spotlights but allow the realization of a show that develops further year after year thanks to their involvement into an event that is still an example of the high quality of its facility.

Many spectators had travelled from all over the world to celebrate the crowning of a new array of C h a mp i o n s . O f f i c i a l photographers Mrs. Lisa Abraham and Mr. Wieslaw Pawloski stepped in and positioned themselves around arenas and work areas just the way ‘paparazzi’ would do on a Fashion week; however, there, in an all-pervading Arabian kind of style. Each entry was brilliantly conditioned, carried out, and presented
irrespective of their owner, handler, or country they competed for. A panel of international judges was composed by: Mrs. Silvia Garde-Ehlert (Germany); Mr. Ferdinand Huemer (Austria); Mr. Steve Lieblang (United States); Mr. Luiz Rocco (Brazil); Mrs. Renata Schibler (Switzerland); Mrs. Marianne Tengstedt (Denmark); Mr. Marc Veray (France) and Mr. George Zbyszewski (United States). Important breeding stallions of the modern Arabian horse breeding were competing for the World Champion title. In between them was EQUATOR (QR MARC x EKLIPTYKA) bred and owned by STADNINA KONI MICHALÓW SP. z.o.o. He is a gorgeous stallion who could still win anywhere in the world but this time was here to claim his title of Silver champion stallion. A title well deserved though, with just a few qualifying points away from World Champion Senior stallion WADEE AL SHAQAB (MARWAN AL SHAQAB x OFW MISHAAHL) for the joy of his breeder and owner AL SHAQAB STUD. Wadee’s dramatic entrance, with his extravagant mane flying, was thrilling and captured the hearts of many. Bronze medal winner EQUIBORN K.A. (QR MARC x ESPADRILLA) bred and owned by KNOCKE ARABIANS. There were also Special trophies that were given at the 37th edition of the Paris World Championships: •Platinum Champion Paris 2017: GAZAL AL SHAQAB (ANAZA EL FARID x KAJORA); •Best movement female: BELOVED GRACIOUS LADY (BEY AMBITION x AP SHEEZ SASSY); •Best movement male: EQUATOR (QR MARC x EKLIPTYKA); •Best Sire in the show: WH JUSTICE (MAGNUM PSYCHE x VONA SHER-RENEA); •Best Straight Egyptian: WADAD ZAMANI (LAHEEB x ZENA AL BURAQ); •Highest Score in the World Championship: WADEE AL SHAQAB (MARWAN AL SHAQAB x OFW MISHAAHL); The Paris World Championships were a successful, renewed edition last November and a first-class ending of the 2017 European show season. This is also thanks to the new Director Jessica Gordon who put on the agenda many complementary breeding activities with high-performance sport equestrian activities for all levels. On the whole, a great achievement that has placed this annual event at the very ‘Top’ of similar organizations in the sector.

T
here will follow a Billet concerning the Paris Arabian Horse World Championship 2017 written by our friend and collaborator Mr. William Richardot de Choisey, Founder in 1980 of the World Arabian Horse Championship organized inside the Salon du Cheval in collaboration with the Agence Française du Cheval Arabe – French Arab Horse Agency. It is nice to see that the Salon du Cheval de Paris 2017 – albeit far-off intramural Paris - has taken its headquarters at the ‘Parc des Expositions Villepinte’ and it is now experiencing a renewed interest due to the full range of products and services offered to visitors. This is thanks to the new Director Jessica Gordon who put on the agenda many complementary breeding activities with high-performance sport equestrian activities for all levels. On the whole, an undeniable success that has placed this annual event at the ‘Top’ of similar organizers of the segment. At the end of the year, all witnesses whether they are amateurs or international actors of the Arabian horses sector join together in a place that for a little more than a decade has turned into a rather customary rendezvous to the detriment of a competition that enjoyed better glory days. Nowadays we are witnessing an event where everything has changed due to the fact that the ‘area of activity’ is going through turbulence times with a dynamic that has jammed for greed or compromise.
AHM | 148
The recurring crises have unleashed some structural contradictions within the original construction of the European Competitions Commission. Beautiful and multidecorated Arabian specimens mainly coming from hot countries are gathered every year into an impressive collector; but is this still a real competition? There are ongoing comments and shared ideas also corroborated by a too strong involvement of people linked to the competition and around it. Despite current geopolitical crises, the 2017 competition programming has been at the very heart of debates on whether or not to maintain an event that is too expensive as for what it is expected from a gathering of knowledgeable amateurs of the breed. According to professionals and supporters of this championship who have freely expressed themselves, a resumption of the event in Paris may be possible by reformatting and organizing it every other year, alternating with the European Championship with a view to restoring the worth of the titles awarded. An awareness of recovery is being equally felt among Professionals, Breeders and Amateurs. They all want to see a beautiful show with values and wonder about the future of the Arabian horse. They point out to a necessary revival of the sector for all. The new real Show manager of the Arabian Horse World Championship Miss Sophie Delavaud is well aware of the situation.
AHM | 149
Interviewed by: Sonja Smaldone Good morning Mr. Veray! Thank you very much for accepting our interview. Let’s start from the very beginning. When did you start taking an interest in the Arabian horse breed? I was born with a passion for horses. At the age of 4, the first drawings I made were about horses. I learnt to ride in the 1960s. I was only 10 at the first horseback riding event in my village where cavalry used to arrive from the Middle East to the Port of Marseille. There were Berbers, Arabian Berbers and Purebred
Who was the first Arabian horse that you laid your eyes on? The first Arabian Horse I had was a Syrian Caid flea-bitten grey one. Unforgettable ride. At the age of 14 I rode with him a distance of 100 Km in 8 hours. At the arrival, nobody could just believe my journey so the horse was fresh! I can guarantee you that the following Arabian saying is perfectly true. “If you see a flea-bitten horse, buy it. If they don’t want to sell him to you, steal him”. At what age did you become a judge? How did everything start?
Arabians being carried with no documents but they were really beautiful horses. This is where my passion for Middle Eastern horses also started.
I began judging in the 1980s with the judges of the national stud-farms who are great experts on sports horses. Thanks to them, I have learnt a lot about morphology.
To what extent has this love you have acquired for the Arabian horse influenced your life? Ever since then I have lived for the Arabian horse and it may be said that I was literally linked to his existence. In my country the Arabian horse is everywhere in the stables and also in my house where I have a collection of bronze painting lithographs and a library packed with works that are devoted to him. What made me a knowledgeable person about the type of the ancient Arabian horse.
What really made you want to judge in morphology competitions? In order to acquire a more in-depth knowledge, nothing better than judging a maximum of competitions as it is by ‘forging’ that one becomes ‘forger’ and it is in the course that one becomes a good judge.
AHM | 150
What specific qualities and skills are needed to become a competent and mindful judge? You must have a big passion for sure, start very young, watch a

lot and ride the biggest number of specimen as it is by being in contact with them that you learn more. Moreover, you must be determined, courageous, honest, and humble and be a good listener and
For sure beauty is important, but do not forget one thing: it is his qualities that establish his reputation. There is a nice story about the horse of Napoleon. When he was tied up, it was hard to find there any

beauty but when the Emperor would ride him he outclassed all the other horses. It is exactly during the wars that the Arabian horse proved his best qualities: rapidity, resistance, generosity, simplicity with reference to food, his intelligence,
What are you looking for in an Arabian horse to judge him? When you meet an Arabian horse worthy of the name, you will no longer need more detail. That is a state of wonder that will take you right into a desert storm. I have sometimes met horses of this kind but they are quite rare. What about movement, what is that you are looking for? His movement is a pure wonder of efficiency and beauty. It is a unique spectacle. I am particular concerned about agility and balance. I love when his shanks propel him above the ground and that marks a time of suspension with the forelegs. It is because of this suppleness that movement becomes unique and I take this down into my note on type. So do you think we have the balance right between beauty and functional correctness in our modern day Arabians?
his health and his superiority over the other horses was unchallengeable‌and I take this into account when judging. I judge with the eye of a knight. AHM | 153
What are your favorite bloodlines, if any? I love the lines that represent the ancient desert-bred Arabian horses raised by the Bedouins. We must absolutely preserve them as it is exactly with them that the others have been built. Egyptian lines are my favorite ones. By the way, Aswan in Russia and Palas in Poland have created the best horses in the world and many other combinations of this type have fully proved that.
If you could change anything in the current system of judgment, what would it be? In the current judging system everything has been made for the judges to go wrong. In fact, there are too many notes, handlers are very strong and they know all the tricks to catch the eye of the public: horses are anointed with oils that make them shine, they are being excited and as they pose they will have to stretch their neck and show their back off. I think this is all very nice but that’s not what a judge should be looking at when judging a horse. Moreover, the audience puts undue pressure on their favorites while all the grooms shaking their plastic bags just prevent the horses from staying quite which would better allow the judges to study them. The English method is for me the most realistic one; implemented in the quietest and natural way it may appear less spectacular but we should be aware of what we are really looking for: the show or the good result. To what extent do you think that your specific knowledge as a French judge may in some respects distinguish you from other judges who have different professional skills? I don’t expect everyone to like me. I judge according to my own feelings, my personal conviction. I take risks yes, I often know that I will be alone in my choice but I am capable of explaining my notes with great precision.
AHM | 154
What has been your biggest success so far? One of my judgments that I wish to recall is the one with WH Justice when he was an illustrious unknown horse in Italy. He was only 3 years old in his first competition and I could already realize that he was an exceptional subject, a truly star. I put him as Champion at the show in Travagliato and a few months later, as Champion of the Paris World Championship. I was the only judge in my choice, I was fiercely criticized but today I grin under my beard … Which Show has been the most crucial one to you? The most significant show was with a little Arabian mare from Tersk state-stud with whom I participated in a 7 Km endurance race in Florac in 1977. On that
particular occasion I could realize what an Arabian horse worthy of this name really is. I even cried down her back over the last kilometers. She finished the last round at a speed of 21 kilometers per hour. In that same year she won an amateur flat race and I realized a 900Km raid in total. Do you miss past times contests or do you prefer the atmosphere of today’s festivals? Of course, I do remember past times shows and I can’t help but register to my dismay the absence of horses, men and women as well as of many lovers of the breed, but we must keep the pace with modern times. Today, it is the Middle East the one with the high card as it possesses unlimited means. After all, the Arabian horse is their heritage so they just want to get him back. And, for once, allow us to render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s. Besides that, one must reckon that they organize really beautiful shows down there. What are the positive and negative aspects of being a Judge? (Travel, time exposure, and so on). Po s i t i v e
aspects are for sure the pleasure of seen the livestock developments around the world and encounter so many exceptional subjects whose beauty dazzles all who see them. One negative aspect: it is a lot of hard work along with long hours of waiting at airports. What is your favorite Arabian horse destination to travel to? One of my favorite destinations is Poland. Janow Michalov’s and Bielka’s studs are truly temples of the Arabian horse and every time I go there I can sense only strong emotions. But Spain also. I still keep fantastic memories about wonderful mares of the most classic type at the Military mares’ state-stud and at Arcos De La Frontera. ‘The Arabian horse market has become increasingly difficult’. What do you think it should be said with reference to this? The market of the Arabian horse has become very complicated. It is overproduction, I think, the main cause behind that as it is in all the other breeds.
AHM | 155
What advice would you give to those who want to embark on this adventure of becoming a Judge? It is simple. You must start very young, be crazy about it, visit as many farms as you can around the world and ride as many horses as possible. Moreover, you must learn his history, the art world around him, lithography and paintings and read a lot in the Vet textbooks. After that, you won’t need to learn anymore, you just need to feel it… What do you think about the attacks on judges and show organizers who are severely exposed to compromise or undue pressure? What is your feeling in this respect? When you are a judge or organizer, you are exposed to a lot of criticism. But ‘let the world say what it will’. Other than that, just abstain on it. The position of the European Body E.c.a.h.o. Does it respond to the concerns of the very few European breeders in international competitions for the profit of wealthy investors? It won’t be an easy game for the ECHAO thought it appears that it can handle it quite well inside all the chaos in the sector. European breeders will be completely surpassed by the billionaires from the Middle East. Even for the state-studs it will be hard to survive as those people have the trump card.
AHM | 156
Mr. Veray, we would be very happy if you could leave one last message to the readers of AHM and to the global Arabian horse community... I am and I will always stay a purist. I am concerned about the evolution of the breed though. New Arabian horses have been invented; new generations have come about by mixing all the bloodlines. Some have disappeared, some others are fading out. After all, a consumer society can only produce an animal of consumption but I am positive about it. I also know that there are many purists like me out there who keep working in their corner to preserve this living masterpiece that the Arabian horse is. I will conclude with an Arabian saying that you may need to ponder: “You don’t sell the love for your horse; you will have to be dropped out or left in despair, maybe you will give him”. I wish long life to all of you and the Arabian horse of course! Thank you very much for your contribution Mr. Veray! We look forward to seeing you judge again in the most important Arabian horse world competitions in 2018. On behalf of the entire Team, I wish you all the best in your brilliant career.

G
ood morning Joris! First of all thank you very much for agreeing to be interviewed by our Magazine. Let’s start from the very beginning.
How and when did this passion you nurture for the Purebred Arabian horse and Morphology arise?
I started riding in my childhood. And when I was 14 years old, my uncle bought his first Arabian horse and since then on it all started. We went to watch farms and shows and started helping in a training center at weekends and on school holidays. And also reading a lot in the books and searching on the Internet.
To what extent has this love you have acquired for the Arabian horse influenced your life?
The Arabian horse was since then always around in my life. It influenced it so much that I could turn my hobby into a profession along with all the opportunities this gave me, from travelling the world to meeting new people and friends.
You have been working with Arabian horses for long time by now. What’s your feeling about the market for these horses and how did it use to be like in the past? Can you see any changes? As well as in the past, I think the market is now always going up and down. I think in America you have a bigger market because they also sell many horses for performance while in Europe and Middle East it is more for showing or endurance purposes. So

AHM | 160
Take your time and be willing to learn every day. Use your eyes by watching others. The most things, you learn by watching and try it afterwards and never forget. Once you think you know everything you’d better stop because with horses you learn every day.
Out of all horses you have been entrusted to, which is the one you had to bear a greater commitment with? Well, there are a few that I prefer more in a similar way. But I try to give all the horses the same commitment.
Are you also a breeder?
Not yet. We only bred two foals back in the days. But in the future I would like to focus on it again and start to breed my own horses.
Which is your favorite bloodline? Why?
I don’t have a specific bloodline preference. Some bloodlines you like more than others to work with because some have some issues. you have a bigger market there.
What does the word ‘handling’ mean to you?
Handling is the unique connection you make with the horse. You need to handle the horse with respect/ trust and he needs to respect/trust you. You need to forge an excellent bond/ friendship.
What feelings do you receive by handling Arabian horses? A lot of appreciation if you see that they understand what you teach them. And, as a handler, when you can show horses with amazing attitude and movement, it gives you an extra kick when you can show it to the public.
Is there any particular symbiosis between a handler and his horse?
You need to have a good trustful relationship with your horse. If you have a good bond/connection with your horses and the horses trust you and you take good care of them, they will give that extra boost in the show-ring and they will give/ show themselves to the maximum. Which can help you get the victory.
In your opinion, what are the qualities needed to become a good handler?
You need to have a feeling with the horses. Trying to understand them and looking for the best possible way to present them, because every horse is different. And then you need to be in good health conditions because you will need to run a lot.
What would an experienced handler tell a layman of this world?
How should your ideal type of Arabian horse look like? And which features he should have?
My perfect Arabian needs to have a ‘look at me’ factor, great charisma and elegance. The one that blazes you away when you first see him. First of all, he needs to have attitude. I find that very important. Then a nice tail carriage and good movement, strong body, nice eye bone structure, beautiful eyes and a good neck. A good Arabian horse needs to have the ability to show but also to do performance...
What’s your message to today’s breeders?
Keep breeding to the standards that you have and don’t get to much involved with the hype breeding. Don’t forget to not only breed for type but also to keep the good bodies/legs/movement...
Who/What really got you into Morphology competitions?
Well, as a teenager I started to help and learn at a training center and went with them to shows... And from there on it went till where I am today.
Do you remember your first show?
My first show was in Balen/Belgium. It was at Jadem Arabians (the place where I work today). I can still remember the show, it was like a familiar place with always some good quality horses, lots of people and good atmosphere.
How did you expand your theoretical and practical knowledge on handling and training show horses?
By watching all the trainers and handlers all over the world and from the horse himself. My first experience was with Juan Murillo; later on I got to learn from people such like: Philippe
AHM | 161
Hosay, Bruno Guiraldelli, Claudinei Machado, my brother Frederik van Sas, just to name a few.
Do you miss past times contests or do you prefer the atmosphere we see at today’s festivals?
I sometimes do miss the past, it was more familiar. People cheered more for the horses they liked no matter which handler/ owner he had.
In which country did you experience a better quality of the organization of a show?
Every show has its quality and charm. I think these days you don’t have any bad organization anymore no matter which country the show is held.
Is there any victory you feel particular close to? Tell us something about your recent success at the AHO Breeders Cup Championship 2017 in Egypt… All the victories we make with the team you feel close to because everybody worked hard to achieve that goal to win and if you succeed you’re a happy person. I went to show for the first time for Al Sayyad at the Breeders Cup in Egypt. We had a good show, horses performed well and we ended up with 2 Bronze champions. There is good collaboration among us and we’re looking forward to the future and next show season together.
Do the most deserving horses in terms of today’s standards really win?
In my opinion not always. But we have a judging sport, so judges decide. Whether you like it or not. It’s their opinion who they think deserves to win or prefer more. And they have the knowledge to choose the right ones.
What are the conformation differences you can notice between the Arabian horses of today and those in the past? In today’s horses sometimes they only care about face and type. While an Arabian is much more than that.
AHM | 162
Sometimes we should bring back the super good movement from the past, bringing back some strong Russian and Polish movement...But overall in the past/present/ future you will always find very good and less good horses.
How important are the Fairs of Arabian horses?
It can be good to get some new people into the business...
Does your job keep you away from home for extended periods of time? How do you cope with your family and friends? Are they all Arabian horses’ lovers? Yes it does. Anyway, you keep up to date with your family and friends while you’re away. It’s easy these days with the technology to text and facetime. And as a single person, it’s easier to just leave for a period of time. Not all of them are Arabian horse lovers but they’re all interested in the job I do.
What advice would you give to those who approach the world of Purebred Arabian horse for the first time?
Educate yourself with all you can. Study about breeding programs and bloodlines. Get to know lots of people and see what you aim for. Think and look ahead what your plans are and what you want to do with the horses. Don’t be afraid, the Arabian is a beautiful breed and you find to have a great community in the Arabian horse world.
What are your expectations for the future?
I hope to keep on growing and getting better and better in what I do.
Joris, will you please leave a final message for our loyal readers? Well, as we just celebrated the New Year I wish everyone a happy 2018 and I hope all your dreams may come true. And see you all soon at one of the shows or gatherings on the Arabians horse scene.
Thanks a lot Joris…It was an honor talking to you. We feel to wish you all the best in your future endeavors…

MESENCHYMAL STEM CELL
IRAP
Mesenchymal stem cell from adipose derived stromal vascular fraction: using a lipoaspirate fat processing device, it’s possible to obtain immediatly ready to use stem cells. Clinical use of these cells are injected intraarticular, perilesional or intravenously and provide benefit in both articular cartilage repair, soft tissue healing and osteoarthritis.
Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist protein. The principle is that the patient’s blood is incubated in a container with coated beads for 24 hours, centrifuged and then the resulted conditioned serum injected intraarticular.
These cells can also be used in treating laminitic horses where clinical observation and venografy demonstrate an enhancement in condition, suggesting that the regenerative therapy in chronic laminitis could be useful.
PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP)
INTRARTICULAR STANOZOLOL
PRP, is produced by filtration and centrifugation of blood to obtain a serum where there is an increase in platelet content over the level in blood.
Is a novel therapy for joint desease, has both anti-inflammatory and regenerative effect in case of osteoarthritis.
The use of PRP is based on the growth factors within the granules including transforming growth factor, platelet-derived growth factor-1, IGF-2, fibroblast, epidermal and endothelial growth factor. The PRP is used mainly in tendineous and ligament injury under guide of ultrasound. PRP helps the recovery with a superior ultrasonographic healing, biomechanical parameters and histomorphologic score.

This treatment is particularly succesful in cases of osteoarthritis not responding to cortisonic and acid hyaluronic. A horse treated with IRAP significantly reduce lameness, synovial inflammation and cartilage gross score. The excess of the IRAP serum can be frozen and used at a later stage or when needed.
POLYACRYL AMID HYDROGEL Polyacryl amid hydrogel is a endoprosthesis of sinovial fluid. It helps in restoring viscosity of sinovial fluid and separate articular surface in case of osteoarthrosis not responding to cortisonic treatment.
OTHER SERVICES KANTHAKA OFFER:
♦ Diagnostic imaging: digital direct radiology (not only for lameness but also for head, neck, thoracic and toracolumbar disese) ♦ Digital venography for laminitic horses ♦ Ultrasound of tendon, ligament, joint, toracolumbar spine as well as toracic and abdominal desease ♦ Equine dentistry: dental care with the use of power equipment ♦ Chiropratic treatments ♦ Orthopedic shoeing for horses with laminitis, hoof crack, onychomycosis ♦ Therapeutic shoeing for horses with osteoarthrosis, tendon and ligament injury. I
was born in Cantù, near Milan, 18 years ago and since I was a child I have always been in love with Fashion and Music. I first sang at the age of 4 and the following year I modelled for a wellknown Italian Magazine. At the beginning of the elementary school I was already a soloist in the school choir and given my strong passion for musical notes I got my first keyboard as a gift. Later I had private piano lessons for about 5 years. Soon I began to seek contact with the public by singing in local bands and touring clubs and squares. It was a great experience that gave me strong emotions and made me realize how much I loved this job! In 2014, I was contacted for a casting on the Talent Show Bravissima 2015. Casting took place at Rymax Studio where I met the producer Massimiliano Cenatiempo who became my vocal instructor and still today he is my producer and personal manager. With Max I have established an excellent professional and friendly relationship! In 2015, I participated in the singing contest “Stasera Canto Io”, in Como, north Italy, passing the semis
and finishing third in the final while, in September of the same year, I took part in the regional final of Bravissima Talent Show 2015 and I moved into the next round for the national final in the singing and fashion categories. On November 20th, I went to Turin to participate in the national final at Bravissima Talent Show 2015, and I won the f a s h i o n category as a model. I did not win the title of Bravissima 2015 as a singer, but I was excited about my great result, and I promised myself that I would always continue all the way through my fantastic path. All of a sudden, I found myself catapulted into a new world, the world of television and two weeks after the final of ‘Bravissima 2015’, I was welcomed by Valerio Merola at the RTB studios, in Brescia as a guest for an interview. So I could talk about myself, my future projects and I could express my impressions on the Talent Show Bravissima. I also modelled wearing different outfits during the TV show. On October 18th, 2017 my official video clip “My Tomorrow” was released, do not miss that out! Since October 13th I got involved in the “Radio Tour” with radio interviews and Italian weekly magazines such as: Eva 3000, VIP, Visto, Ora - only to mention a few plus many more editorials from all over Italy. On December 2nd, 2017 I performed at ‘Sanremo Casino’, today, I have been modelling for more than 250 photo shoots, and participating in model sharing and workshops throughout Italy. Last August, a new challenge arouse to tempt me. With Max Cenatiempo and the entrepreneur Martin Moog, we started the production company “MMG Trend Production” that would support my future artistic projects. 1st October 2017 was a memorable date: my first single was released as a personal expression of love and sympathy due to my 35,000 fans! “Il Mio Domani” (My Tomorrow). stirring in the pipeline and I cannot just wait to share them with you! I started riding since I was a little baby, at about 4 years old. The first horse I rode was a small pony named Filippo, white coat with brown spots, sympathetic and obedient. I especially got to love horses after watching the cartoon “Spirit” that is one of my favorite movies. Later I devoted myself to other sports like swimming and dancing and in 2014 I started riding again. To me going on horseback riding is the thrill of a lifetime, I feel completely free and when I close my eyes I feel like flying…I used to train myself twice a week with “Dream”, a 3 years old filly that would become my soul mate. When we were together we would become one flowing unit, I even didn’t have to give her instructions as I only needed to say, “Go Dream, go”! We practiced barils and jumping together. Yet, at some point, I had to stop my riding classes in order to follow my greatest passions in life, music and fashion. Sometimes, I go to say hi to Dream at the equestrian center. I miss her very much and I think I will go back to horseback riding very soon and of course always with my beautiful filly Dream!

ello Barbara! Thank you very much for accepting our interview. Let’s start from the very beginning. Hi Sonja, thanks for the opportunity to tell you my ideas about Arabian horses. When did you start taking an interest in the Arabian horse breed? I am a horse lover as long as I can think and I started horse riding at the age of 10. As a teenager, I became interested in Arabian horses (I don’t remember when and why exactly) and it was around this time, I visited Marbach state stud for the very first time. Since then, I read everything I could find about them.
AHM: What does the word ‘breeding’ mean to you? And which are your favorite bloodlines? Breeding should mean improvement of the breed. And this is a very difficult aim. Every breeder has to decide what “improvement” means and what he or she is breeding for. I started with Russian bloodlines and still love them very much, as I adore the typical power and movements of these horses. But, of course, I have used modern stallions on my mares, to improve and to breed for beauty, type and elegance by preserving the ability for performance.
What made you prefer the Arabian breed over all the other breeds? And how long have you been breeding it? First of all, it is their personality and the sensitivity of the breed. This personality that they pay attention to you, that they always
Everybody inside the international Arabian Horse community knows you are the Manager and the owner of famous CaFra Arabians in Germany. What’s your typical day at the breeding farm? The daily routine depends on whether we are in winter or summer. Now in January, the horses are in the barn over night.
feel if you are happy or mad is something I never found in other breeds. And, on top of it, I love their beauty, even though “beauty” lies in the eyes of the beholder. Last but not least, I like the size of the Arabian horse. I started to ride on warm-bloods, as usual in Germany, but I never liked them because of their size and their behavior. I bought my first Arabian in 1999. The first mares arrived in 2004 and I started breeding in 2005.
So we start in the morning by feeding them. After that, we decide which horses go in the walker, which will be lounged or ridden. They will be groomed and some need special care, need to be washed or clipped. If we need the vet, for example for insemination, we arrange that in the morning too. All the horses go out on a big paddock for the rest of the day. Hay and water is available for all as well as the place to move and run if they want to. While they are out, the stables are cleaned. In the evening we AHM | 179
take them in for the night and feed them again. In summer all my horses are out on the pastures 24/7. We take them inside in the morning to feed them with what they need, minerals or other extras. Then the morning routine is the same as in winter: walker, lounging, r i d i n g , whatever. In Navodchik (Drug x Nutria) the evening, Š Christiane Slawik - www.slawik.comce.de we take a late walk around, to check if everything is ok. So for us, the summer is much more comfortable as the winter, since there is less work and more time for riding and fun.

Are you also a Trainer? No, I am not a trainer. Deep in my heart I am a horse rider, but, some years ago, I decided that I am too old to start young horses under saddle. But I sit on their back as soon as they have learned the essential basics to get an impression about their quality as a riding horse. Concerning show training, I know some very few basics. If I want to show a horse on Arabian horse shows, Johanna UllstrÜm will train and show them for me. If you could name one Arabian that would come the closest to your ideal, which one would that be today? This is a very difficult question. One special mare comes to my mind: Amyra bint Khidar, bred and owned by Sax Arabians. She is just wonderful! What’s your relationship with your horses? With most of my horses I have a very personal relationship. Of course not with all of them, you always have horses in the barn you like more or less. But I know all my horses very well and they know me. I know their strong and weak points, I know their personality and I always find a way to communicate. Is there any horse holding a particular place in your heart? Why? This horse is Menina 1990 by Menes x Nascha. I saw her at Sax Arabians in 2004 and I
immediately fell in love with her. She is my queen and the most beloved horse here at CaFra Arabians. It is her type and her special expression that I love the most. I always say: “She is her royal highness; you have to ask for an audience before you contact her”. She is never angry. If she does not like you, she will not walk away, oh no! She just moves half a step out of your reach. Only one step. I love her. Menina will be 28 years old in May and is doing fine. I am very happy to have two of her granddaughters here at the farm, Al Janina CF (who resembles her personality a lot) and Medina CF. In your opinion, what specific qualities or skills do you need to become a good breeder? Beside knowledge about horses in general and Arabians in particular, a good breeder should have a certain instinct or feeling concerning breeding decisions. Sometimes I see a stallion and immediately see “this stallion will match with that certain mare”. These breeding decisions brought me better foals than breeding only by brain.

Arabian learn the type and bloodlines YOU like. Don’t be in a hurry. See as many horses as you can when you buy. (...) The perfect horse has not been born. Make up your mind where you will give and where you won’t. The cheap horse is often as expensive an investment as the over-priced one. (…)”. This is as important for buying horses for breeding as it is in general. In addition I suggest that you learn as much as you can about horses in general and make yourself an expert about conformation and type, before you start breeding. Barbara, do you breed Purebred Arabians also for show purposes? If so, where did this passion for morphology contests arise from? Yes I did and I was quite successful with some of my horses on shows. When I started to breed Arabians in 2004/2005 in the show world horses were successful when they were beautiful with good conformation and powerful movements. It was the end of what I call “the Russian era”. Since then the show world has changed rapidly. Of course even today it is important, that the horse is beautiful. But nowadays it becomes more and more important, how the horse is trained, who is the trainer and who is the breeder and the owner. Conformation, correctness and movements have not that value any more in the show ring. I saw horses winning champion titles that I wouldn’t even want for free. How about your start on endurance rides? Unfortunately, in the last years, I had not the time nor to train for or to ride endurances. But I like it very much and each year I swear to myself to restart! At least I was so lucky I could do some very nice trail rides over several days in the last years.

the opportunity to show their horses on these events. The modern show has ruined the real breeding show. What’s the most important breeding stallion in the barn and in what ways has he matched your expectations in terms of ‘reproduction’? Actually, I don’t have a stallion in the barn and the stallions I had, I didn’t use very much. Navodchik (he died much too early) has delivered two very good offspring for race / endurance and Jenisseij has left a premium mare for me. For most of my breedings I used outside stallions. Which of your mares do you think is the most important? The most important mare in my breeding program was Mara 2001 by Marsin x Marenga. She produced for me Maharani CF 2007 by Psytadel, who together with her daughter Majeedah CF 2011 by WH Justice had the most show successes for CaFra Arabians. Mara was ridden and performance tested under saddle and awarded the premium mare title. Due to the show results of Maharani CF she was awarded the title Elite mare. Also Maharani CF was awarded the premium mare title and because of Majeedah’s show results she has all the requirements for the Elite title too.

Do you miss the shows of the past or do you prefer the atmosphere of today’s exhibitions? As I visited my first shows around 2004, I am not familiar with the atmosphere of the shows before the year 2000. But I see a big difference concerning the atmosphere when I visit different shows today. At some of the shows (and I don’t like them), people seem or want to be more important than the horses themselves. A nice show is one where the horses are more important than their owners, breeders or handlers. It should be all about horses, not about people. In Germany we have the opportunity to show horses on breeding shows organized by the breeding society. On these shows you get another kind of evaluation. The judges don’t want to see the “hard standup”, they want to see the horse stand quiet and naturally. Walk is very important; you have to walk several rounds with your horse in hand. It is not significant that you yourself can run very well, as all the horses are presented in liberty too, so they can show all their movements in trot as well as in gallop. And all three gaits get points. Body and topline as well as legs are judged fair and correct. And on top of that: if you do not understand the results, you can go to the judges afterwards and ask them for an explanation! These breeding shows are completely different from the modern shows organized by E.C.A.H.O. or A.H.O. and offer a great opportunity to an owner and breeder. Unfortunately the results have no impact on the horse’s value in these modern times, so not a lot of people take
Among the most ‘recent births’ in your herd, is there a little colt / filly who has truly embodied your ‘vision’ in terms of morphological standards? By mischance I was not lucky in the last years concerning breeding, as my mares resorbed the last two years. So my youngest horse at the moment is the 3years black Borsalino K daughter Mumtaz mon Amour CF. This filly is of really high quality and I will be very curious about how she will produce. What are the objectives you would like your breeding barn to reach in the future? The most important to me at the moment is not only to get my mares in foal but that they may keep the embryo and will not resorb. For the rest time will tell… To what extent is ‘marketing’ important in the Arabian horse industry? Marketing is extremely important! Without a good marketing it is very difficult to sell horses. I see a problem that the marketing and sale of high priced horses nowadays only works via show results. Only few people take the time and visit a farm to see a breeding program. In my eyes, the Arabian horse business needs a marketing concept that not only relies on international shows. Barbara, will you please leave a message to the readers of AHM? Enjoy your life with Arabian horses! They are the most amazing breed in the world and one should enjoy every day the opportunity to be around them. Thanks a lot for your interview Barbara! It was a great pleasure talking to you. On behalf of the entire Team of AHM, I wish you all the best in your future endeavors… AHM | 185

he first documentary evidence of the presence of Arabian horses in Egypt dates back to the sixteenth century B.C., but the basis for today’s breeding were not set until the beginning of the nineteenth century and the architect of all that was Mohammed Ali Pasha, Viceroy of Egypt from 1 1805 to 1848. The members of the Royal Family improved the sector by building new breeding farms, which as a result of the various successions to the throne and family ordeals channeled many of the bloodlines that composed them into the R.A.S. (Royal Agricultural Society). With the fall of the Royal Egyptian Family that took place in 1952, R.A.S. was transformed into E.A.O. (Egyptian Agricultural Organization), which acquired the horses still standing at the breeding farm of King Farouk, today known as Inshass Stud. During this long period, several horses were sold abroad, in Italy, France, the United Kingdom and elsewhere, bringing their influence in the West. Today we in the West, too often forget that such a
AHM | 186
horse breed, raised by the Bedouins, proved to be essential for our selection. In the first half of 1900, highly skilled Egyptian breeders returned to the original lines of the desert horse and we can clearly see it when looking at the pedigree of Egyptian Arabian Horses. An example of this is the pedigree of the stallion Sid Abouhom 2.3.1936 (El Deree x Layla). His father, El Deree, was a Saqlawi Shaifi horse born in the desert, and purchased by King Fouad I from Hamad Ibn Mudayfir in Nejd. While standing at Inshass Stud as a head stallion from 1924 to 1927, El Deree would also be used as a race horse with excellent results, wearing the colors of King Fouad I who, at the end of the horse’s racing career, gave him
2
to R.A.S. where he worked as a highly appreciated stallion. In the Inshass Stud Book there are many similar cases, with horses donated by the Bedouin Princes and employed in the Egyptian breeding. A further example is the Kuhaylah mare named Nafaa 1.2.1941 (Obeyan El Seifi x Koheila), a roan horse born in Saudi Arabia, which in 1942 was donated to Inshass Stud by King Aziz Ibn Saoud. As can be seen, the names of her parents are also the names of the bloodlines she belonged to. At Inshass Stud, Nafaa gave birth to five foals and, amongst them, only the mare Nadia (12.10.1947) by the stallion Ezzat appears to be on the E.A.O. lists. Nafaa was later purchased by Ahmed Hamza at the liquidation auction organized by Inshass
Stud and at the Hamdan Stables she had a daughter named Bint Nafaa (8.2.1962) by the stallion El Gadaa. In Nafaa’s pedigree, her mother’s name is not mentioned and similar omissions can also be found in the pedigree of Sid Abouhom. This fact is as much of a puzzle to many Westerners who wrongly assume that such an omission also means that the Asil (Pure) bloodline is not fully demonstrated. The falsehoods engineered in the past by pseudo Western experts as regards some Straight Egyptian horses that apparently would be less pure, led the E.A.O. to intervene authoritatively also during the WAHO Conferences of Marrakesh and London so that there couldn’t be false rumors anymore, and to call for an official step to be taken in this direction by the World Association of the Arabian Horse. Because of these rumors, some important bloodlines coming from great specimen are threatened with extinction. Among them, I would like to mention some subjects bred by the tribe of the Tahawiya Bedouins that settled in Egypt and came from their original homeland corresponding to current Hejaz, in Saudi Arabia. I am talking about the mare called Folla, 1942 (Ibn Barakat and out of a Shueymah Sabbah) and her daughter Bint Folla (17.8.1956) out of Hamdan, mother of the stallion Marshall (27.3.1961) by Emam. Folla was also mother of the important stallion called Fol Gamil (21.2.1960) by Hamdan. Folla was bred by Sheikh Abdul Hamid Rageh el Tahawi and in 1944 she was purchased by Ahmed Hamza. For the Egyptians as well as for all the other supporters of the Asil horse, it is essential to have horses capable of providing typical performances. El Zahraa gives us an example of this by employing some Desert Bred Tahawiya subjects capable of exceptional classical performances. The famous Asil Arabian horses breeding farm of El Zahraa is located in Cairo, near Heliopolis and it is under the supervision of the E.A.O. El Zahraa used to be a sanctuary where bloodlines of the finest Asil subjects were preserved, particularly those
from Neid. At the time, they knew how to introduce to the breeding activity both Asil specimen born in the desert among the Bedouins - and selected according to their performance – and new Asil subjects or their products imported from England. So even Egypt, located at the same latitude as the deserted Arabia, but with a completely different and mild climate, thought it was necessary to regularly introduce new bloodlines from subjects bred 3 by Bedouins. I wanted to write this long introduction to highlight the impressive work done by those who had the task to save purity and develop this breed. However, we would not have ever achieved these results if, besides institutional subjects, there had not been enthusiastic breeders who took care of those horses and carried out the selection according to the Bedouin criteria; some of them raised broad public awareness in the field with their precious articles and also by publishing their books.

Most of these authors have become famous, but there is also someone who is not yet known by the general public by fate or missed opportunities despite having played an important role in the development of the Arabian Horse. In this chapter, I will present some articles about Moniet El Nefous, perhaps the most celebrated broodmare in the Egyptian breeding history, written by Marshall W. Partlow who before anyone else had understood the importance of this matron and was to be the first American to write about her. Marshall W. Partlow was born on 4th August, 1941 and lost his life before his time on November 16th, 1989 in a car accident at the age of 48 years old.
I never got to meet Marshall W. Partlow in person. I came across him when I did some research work on the public figures that had played an important role in the international development of the AHM | 187

with other people. He was a polite and lovely person always putting people at ease. To describe Marshall we could use many positive adjectives: a warm-hearted fully devoted to his farm “Klassic Arabian Horse Farm” with responsible maturity and common sense. He was extremely honest and disinterested when giving advice, very friendly and he would easily begin a conversation with friends as well as with strangers. Contagious enthusiasm was perhaps one of his best qualities; he would attract people because he was just so funny. A naturally exuberant and optimistic man of action, very sensitive, who used to have a highly rewarding relationship with all kinds of animals; sometimes it seemed
6
like they were almost speaking to each other and he would not tolerate any abuse on them. With his young wife Lois, who shared his same passions in life, Marshall W. Partlow founded
Arabian Horse. Marshall W. Partlow’s legacy was carried out by his daughter Marcie Partlow-William, current owner of ‘Klassic Arabian Horse Farm’, at Olathe, in Kansas, and thanks to her accurate information, I could write about his father. Marshall was a once-in-a-life man for several reasons. Besides being the author of a book, he wrote articles for important magazines; he was a gentle soul and had powerful hands like those of an artist, as when he rebuilt some ancient Mustang machines. He was one of the founders of the Eastern Kansas Arabian Horse Association where he also served as a President for some time. Marshall was above all a family man and in spite of all his commitments, he was able to devote his time also to friends. He led his younger son Brock’s basketball and baseball teams in several championships; he coached his eldest son, Barry, in playing football and brought his daughter Marcie to win track speed competitions at the Olympic Games. Marshall W. Partlow was a knowledgeable man who would love classical beauty in horses as well as in art. He was also a great expert on horse management and horse healthcare especially with reference to Arabians. Endowed with a mild and nice disposition to others, Marshall W. Partlow did not hesitate to share what he knew AHM | 188

‘Klassic Arabian Horse Farm’ in 1962 in Olathe, Kansas. At the age of twenty-two years, he had already begun his research on the Arabian Horse, when in 1963 he bought the pure Arabian filly called Nueymah 1963 (Rasakkla x Nusana) who had mostly Crabbet lines.
During his research, he was able to visit the most important farms in the U.S.A., such as Henry B. Babson’s breeding farm; Ansata Arabian Stud, Gleannloch Farms and all the most important horses of those times, mostly Straight Egyptians such as Ansata Shah Zaman 28.1.1968
8
(Morafic x Ansata Bint Mabrouka), the black Fa Serr 1947 (Fadl x Bint Serra I) and Fabah 1950 (Fadl x Bint Bint Sabbah). In 1965 at a class A show that took place in Enid, Oklahoma, Marshall encountered a horse that had entered last in the class of the senior stallions. This horse was Ansata Ibn Halima 17.9.1959 (Nazeer x Halima) who introduced himself as if he was the King, bold and proud, showing off all his grace and beauty. Marshall was so impressed by this stallion that the next year he bred his young Nueymah to him. Later, she would give birth to the stallion Klassic Shahwan. After studying the horses at Babson Farm, his favorite products were the sons of Fay-ElDine 1934 (Fadl x Bint Serra I). In 1967 Marshall sold all his horses and bought what would then become his foundation mare, a filly carrying the bloodline he was looking for named Saandileyna 1966 (Sami Raja x Saandirouf), who mostly had Babson’s Egyptian lines in her pedigree. In order to complete the genetic base for future production at “Klassic Arabian Horse Farm”, the following year he also got the 23-year-old stallion Zab, 1945 (Fay-El-Dine x Zabba), bred by Henry B. Babson, Chicago, Illinois. Despite having almost all Egyptian lines, Zab was an Asil (Pure), but not Straight Egyptian, because his maternal grandfather named Aldebar 1919 (Dwarka x Amida), imported by Henry B. Babson and bred by the Prince of Wales, had in his pedigree a sire who was a Kuhaylan horse born in the desert of Arabia by the Anazeh tribe, and imported from England in 1901 and had never been part of the Egyptian breeding. In 1972 Marshall went to Egypt to buy what he wanted as a breeding stallion for his herd. He found Tuhotmos 14.10.1962 (El Sareei x Moniet El Nefous), but that year the EAO did not want to sell the horse. Few years later, fortunately, Marshall managed to have this stallion in his herd for two breeding seasons. During his trip
to E g y p t , Marshall could appreciate all the qualities of Moniet El Nefous and took many notes that he needed for his publications. Despite having a small herd, Marshall W. Partlow achieved goals that horse breeders may dream about in their whole life. Marshall W. Partlow’s untimely death was a great loss for the Arabian horse world and one that left his family in despair. None of his family members or friends could ever accept he was just gone. Among Marshall W. Partlow’s friends, I would like to mention: Debra Geiser ( Dara Meadows Farm), Dee and Ed Williams (Fantasy Farm Arabians), Judith Forbis (Ansata Arabian Stud), Marlene Ashner (Foxwood Farms Ltd.), Linda Bohr (Wind Spirit Arabians), Jo-An Summers (Buttonwood Arabians). Find below three articles written by Marshall W. Partlow: 1) Moniet El Nefous (Arabian Horse News - 1973). 2) Moniet El Nefous 1946 - 1976 (Arabian Horse World - 1977) 3) In memory of * Bint Moniet El Nefous (Arabian Horse World - 1980)
MONIET EL NEFOUS
One often reads or hears of a stallion that has produced outstanding foals. The stallion goes down in the record books as
9
a great sire. Seldom does a mare make the limelight. A stallion can produce many foals in one year, but a mare only one foal. When a mare produces outstanding foals almost every time, she has accomplished something much more than a stallion. She has only the one chance a year-with the stallion which she has been matched with. In Cairo, Egypt, on February 11, 1946, at the Society’s Farouk Stud, such a mare was born. She went down in the record AHM | 189
books named MON I ET EL NEFOUS, a Saklawia Gidrania Ibn Sudan chestnut mare with a star. Her sire was the beautiful IBN RABDAN son, SHAHLOUL; her dam, the elegant WANISA. Most of MONIET’s offspring seem to have a feminine and elegant look about them. Extreme trotting action is also characterized in this blood line. But most of all is her ability to stamp the elegant, story-book head. The heads are a little longer, tapering to a small muzzle, with the extreme dish and fine detail. MONIET is a mare one can stand and admire just for beauty’s sake. She looks like a work of art and can be admired not only for her conformation but also for her classic, feminine, and true Arabian beauty-which she passes on to her offspring. MONIET first three foals were fillies, sired by the exceptional race horse and sire, SID ABOUHAM (El DereLayla). The first foal was MABROUKA, born in 1951. Out of MABROUKA came the beautiful *MORAFIC, a sire of champions, imported by Gleannloch Farms of Spring, Texas. MABROUKA’s only filly, imported by Ansata Arabian Stud of Chickasha, Oklahoma, was named *ANSATA BINT MABROUKA. She was bred to her full brother, *MORAFIC, and from this mating was produced the beautiful stallion ANSATA SHAH ZAMAN, showing the
10
strength of this blood line. *ANSATA BINT MABROUKA also produced ANSATA IBN SUDAN, the 1971 U. S. National Champion Stallion. LUBNA, born in 1953, was MONIET’s AHM | 190
second foal. LUBNA produced *SAFAA, sired by SAMEH (El Moez-Samira), and imported by Gleannloch Farms. Her son SULTAN, also sired by SAMEH, is a stallion now being used at the Egyptian Agricultural Organization. LUBNA has since passed on at the E. A. O. MONIET’s third foal was also a filly –MOUNA, born in 1954. She produced *BINT MOUNA, sired by the famed stallion NAZEER, and imported by Gleannloch Farms. She also had a filly named *HOYEDA, sired by *MORAFIC, and also imported by Gleannloch. MONIET’s fourth foal was a son named IBN EL SHEIKH, also sired by NAZEER. He was doomed to disappear on the streets of Cairo, as he was bought as a race horse and did not
11
fare well on the race track. In 1957, MONIET produced an elegant daughter by NAZEER. She was named *BINT MONIET EL NEFOUS. She was imported into the U. S. A. by Richard G. Pritzlaff of Sapello, New Mexico, in 1958. The only daughter of MONIET ever to leave Egypt. *BINT MONIET EL NEFOUS is said by many people to be one of the most beautiful mares in America today. So far she has four sons and six daughters, all living in the U. S. A. In 1958 MONIET lost a foal by NAZEER. Then in 1960 she produced the beautiful and elegant stallion *FAKHER EL DIN, he also by NAZEER. After being sold to Mr. Hamza, he was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. Loken of Williamsville, New York, and imported into the country. *FAKHER EL DIN was injured in a trailer accident, his show career cut short, and he is now making his name as sire. MONIET’s eighth foal was *TUHOTMOS, a striking bay son, whose sire was EL SAREEI (Shahloul-Zareefa). This was the result of breeding a SHAHLOUL son to a SHAHLOUL

and five are in the U. S. A. As history writes itself, MONIET EL NEFOUS will be in the pages of Arabian horse history as one of the great broodmares of our century. While in Egypt in 1972 it was my good fortune to see MONIET EL NEFOUS at the age of 27, along with two daughters, MABROUKA and MOUNA. They stood out in the brood mare band like rare gems. One’s eyes cast on them immediately on walking into the paddock. To quote myself, “It has to be God’s work to create a mare such as MONIET EL NEFOUS. How fortunate it is that five of her offspring are in America to infuse their blood for all times with ours. Marshall W. Partlow 1973
MONIET EL NEFOUS
February 1946 – December 1976 The end of an era; MONIET EL NEFOUS joins the sands time. For 30 years MONIET reigned as the Queen of Egyptian Arabians. She was born in Cairo, Egypt, February 11, 1946, at the Society’s Farouk Stud. When General Von Szandtner was picked to lead the breeding of Arabians in Egypt, he proceeded carefully to pick out his breeding stock to produce a classic Arabian with good type and conformation. MONIET became his favorite broodmare because she produced the same outstanding type and beauty that she herself possessed. The General went to produce some daughter. *TUHOTMOS was a potent sire at the E. A. O. and was recently imported into the U. S. A., having been purchased by Ranchara of Merrimac, Wisconsin, and Lowe Arabians of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. In 1964 *IBN MONIET EL NEFOUS was born. He was sired by *MORAFIC and was imported into the United States by Jay Stream. A 1971 U. S. National Top Ten Stallion. *IBN MONIET EL NEFOUS is now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Jarrell McCracken’s Bentwood Farm of Waco, Texas, and he is making a name for himself as a sire. MONIET’s next foal was a fine filly by ALAA EL DIN 13 (Nazeer-Kateefa). Named MANAR, she died without leaving any offspring. MONIET’s eleventh foal was also by ALAA EL DIN. This beautiful son, *SOUFIAN, was also imported into the U. S. A. by Gleannloch. Although he has not been shown yet, he is being used as a breeding stallion, and will surely make his debut as a show horse. MONIET’s twelfth and probably last foal was a colt born in 1971. He was named AMEER and was sired by GALAL (Nazeer-Farasha). He is still at the E. A. O. in Cairo. As her last son in Egypt, he will be the one to carry on the line over there. Out twelve foals, three remain in Egypt, four are deceased,

of the most beautiful Arabians ever raised in the world, by his careful selection and knowledge of Arabian horses. Those who were lucky enough to see MONIET, in her kingdom, looked at classical beauty of the past. She exemplified a painting by Schreyer, of one’s dreams of an Abbas Pasha Arabian horse. Her classical type, elegance and beauty shown like a ruby in a pool of diamonds. One could pick her out of the broodmare band easily without ever having seen her before. She was Saklawia Gidrania Ibn Sudan by strain, which she truly represented with her refinement and elegance. Her color was between a light and dark chestnut, a star with two wisps of white hair half way between the nostrils and eyes. MONIET’s line produce a certain type, usually AHM | 191
associated with extreme heads and dish, large eye, and overall refinement. Along with this, which is generally left out of the description, is extreme trotting action. This line usually ranges around 14.3, although her grandson *MORAFIC was 15 hands, and her son *IBN MONIET EL NEFOUS by *MORAFIC, was 15.2. The line did not seem to fare well on the race track, although her grandson *MORAFIC had speed to burn, siring *REFKY who was one of the last purebreds left running in Lebanon and
15
winning in record times. MONIET was sired by one of history’s proven great Egyptian sires, SHAHLOUL. SHAHLOUL’s sire was the famous stallion IBN RABDAN. IBN RABDAN also sired by HAMDAN, the horse for which Egypt was said to have turned down $100,000.00 in the ‘40s; SAMIR, a mare, who was judged the most beautiful mare in Egypt during one period of time, and the stallion RADWIN who was sold at an early age. These four extreme beauties were full brother and sister, being out the great broodmare BINT RADIA. IBN RABDAN blood in the U. S. A. is most known by the early importation by Mr. Henry Babson of *FADL (Ibn Rabdan x Mahroussa). MONIET’s dam, WANISA, traces in tail female line to ROGA EL BEDA, a mare of Ali Sherif breeding. WANISA’s sire was the likewise proven great SHEIKH EL ARAB; she was out of MEDALLELA. When one traces MONIET’s pedigree, it is quite evident why MONIET possessed so much classical beauty and type, and transmitted this to the bearers of her rich and priceless blood. AHM | 192
MONIET EL NEFOUS, with all her beauty, was also a valued broodmare, her offspring being much sought-after worldwide. Only one daughter ever left Egypt, *BINT MONIET EL NEFOUS, imported by Richard Pritzlaff. *BINT MONIET is thought by some to be the most beautiful mare in America today. It is indeed an honor to own her foals, which are becoming priceless objects. Of MONIET’s total sons, only one remains in Egypt – AMEER, last foal of MONIET at the age of twenty-four. Four of her sons have been imported to the U. S. A.: *FAKHER EL DIN, *IBN MONIET EL NEFOUS, *SOUFIAN, and *TUHOTMOS. No other offspring except those mentioned ever left Egypt.
16
Of the pure Egyptian horses in the U. S. A., two have been National Champions – ANSATA IBN SUDAN, owned by Ansata Arabian Farm and a grandson of MONIET’s, and *ASADD, owned by Lancer Arabians, also close up to MONIET blood. I would like to quote Carl Raswan, from his book, A Collection of Articles: “The great winter on horse breeding, Justinus, in his book on the fundamental laws of horse breeding
17
(pg. 40) remarks that pure-breeding is not a question of continuous arriving at further improvements but of retaining certain qualities and characteristics which make up a type or certain strain. Such a fixed type must transmit these qualities through a sire and dam of its own strain (one parent alone cannot communicate it). Only from such a union a colt may be produced which can (as a sire) improve with satisfaction ordinary breeds. Such a sire has intensified qualities, but of the characteristics from both parents.” How true, it seems – we always try to improve instead of retaining. How many beautiful horses have since passed, and no colts or fillies are left that look almost exactly like their sire or dam? It is my hope that the people with the direct MONIET EL NEFOUS blood will pool together and fix a type (strain) that carries on the MONIET EL NEFOUS total look and type. It was one of my greatest moments, to see MONIET EL NEFOUS in Egypt in 1971, and experience the breathtaking beauty of her presence. I truly hope that in the future, I can walk in the pastures of America and see once again, on many farms, the MONIET EL NEFOUS type, not in pedigree alone.

IN MEMORY OF *BINT MONIET EL NEFOUS
It seems just a short time ago I was writing about the Queen of Egypt, MONIET EL NEFOUS and her passing on. Now, her daughter, *BINT MONIET EL NEFOUS, has also left for the sands of time. *BINT MONIET EL NEFOUS was the only daughter of MONIET EL NEFOUS to leave Egypt. She was also the only NAZEER daughter out of MONIET EL NEFOUS to leave Egypt. In 1958, MONIET EL NEFOUS was considered the finest mare at the E. A. O. The stallion NAZEER was considered the
finest stallion. To top this off, *BINT MONIET EL NEFOUS was considered the closest look-alike to her dam, MONIET EL NEFOUS. What a contribution Mr. Richard Pritzlaff made by importing *BINT MONIET EL NEFOUS into the U. S. A. *BINT MONIET was born January 24, 1957. She left for the U. S. A. in April of 1958 along with four other horses, on the U. S. Steele Advocate, sharing a double partitioned box with *BINT NEFISA, also a yearling. She arrived 13 days later at Wilmington, North Carolina, and soon started her long journey to New Mexico. She arrived after a series of storms, and the van driver refused to complete the last four miles of the journey upon seeing washed roads and overflowing streams. *BINT MONIET was led the remaining miles, and arrived safely at her new home, never to leave again. Green grass waving in the mountain breezes, clear mountain water, beautiful mountains standing guard majestically, what a paradise *BINT MONIET EL NEFOUS must have thought she was in, after the dry hot sand of

Egypt. *BINT MONIET was a beautiful filly; she never did go through the ugly stage so many foals pass through. She became one of the most treasured Egyptian mares in the United States and the most loved. Never shown, and never leaving the ranch, people came from all over the world to see her. Her correctness, type, beauty, graceful action, elegance, loving disposition, and

extreme head, endeared her to all who saw her. *BINT MONIET produced seven daughters and six sons before her death in 1979 at the age of 22. She was bred not just to New Egyptian stallions, but also bred to JOHN DOYLE (Gadaf x Rabanna), and TIBOR THE GENERAL (Rashad Ibn Nazeer x Rabanna), bringing in another rich and strong infusion of Abbas Pasha and Ali Pasha Sharif blood. Her offspring are like rare collector’s items, sought after worldwide. To own a *BINT MONIET EL NEFOUS offspring is to own a treasure Marshall W. Partlow 1980
I will conclude this chapter with some personal considerations: the Arabian Horse is first of all a member of the family whose character is very friendly and whose beauty - both inner and external beauty - is simply extraordinary. History, purity, temper, beauty, and athletic qualities ...All this can only make us all agree on saying what follows about his future: “We must

concentrate every effort on maintaining and improving what we have thanks to our enlightened predecessors. These are true desert creatures, truly rare animals. How can we hope to have other horses like these? Therefore, our task is only that of passing what we have today completely “pristine and untouched” onto future generations.

ncient history began over 5,000 years ago and has gifted us with many books about the most important breeding stallions. For sure the one to add on the top of this legendary list is the contemporary champion maker WH Justice, a great sire of breeding progenies and successful show horses. During a trip in Dubai, we had the pleasure to visit the private farm of H.E. Mr. Mohammad Al Gergawi Minister of Cabinet Affairs of the Federal Government of the UAE. While touring the property, we came across a wonderful white mare named DF Halifa. We were taken aback by her type, very solid and strong conformation. We asked H.E some questions and he started to talk about the bloodline of DF Halifa, which was bred by Achim Dirnhöfer – Birkhof Stud Germany.
AHM | 216
In her bloodline, she carries the famous Al Lahab as a sire and in her mother line, she has Messoud who is by Madkour and out of the wonderful mare Maymoonah – she is Egyptian related because she has a tiny influence from the Marbach lines. For us, it was very pleasant to see all his horses especially DF Halifa who was in foal to WH Justice. One year later during the open day of Dubai Arabian horse Stud, we could see her again but she was not alone anymore. Next to her there was a beautiful dishy grey colt. All attendants of the open day were attracted to his attitude to show himself, he looked very proud and charismatic. Something that did catch our attention was for sure his type but most of all his very strong body at this very young age. At that moment, all the stories we were told

Mr. Abdelaziz Al Marzooqi, Executive Manager of Dubai Stud is very proud to assist the Farm in the breeding program with his exceptional stallion SG Labib. He told us that some surprises will be shown to public from SG Labib very soon because there is a full sister of D Danat already on the ground and some other promising babies. It was not Mister Abdelaziz’s idea to have the breedings of SG Labib available on the open market but this came under the advice of Paolo Capecci and Woody (Giampaolo Gubbiotti) to add him on the Europe market for the bre-

by H.E. Mr. Mohammad Al Gergawi one year before about his mother came back to our mind. It was special to see SG Labib the following year under the new ownership of Mr. Abdelaziz Al Marzooqi who got the horse as a gift from the Minister. We should tell that this is just the beginning of a nice story about friendship and breeding program. Today SG Labib has widely proved himself as a sire; he has covered some mares which have been chosen by the very selective eye of the General Manager of Dubai Stud Mr. Mohammed Al Tawheedi. He selected some Gazal Al Shaqab daughter lines and he got as first the promising filly – the wonderful D Danat. She was al-

Shortly thereafter, it happened that a group of Italian breeders-friends, which had always been fond of Labib SG, decided to set off the Emirates on a business trip to Dubai Arabian Horse Stud. When Gianluca Martino, Emilio Manzi, Eugenio Del Vacchio together with Paolo Capecci and Woody came across SG Labib on that particular occasion, the horse appeared surrounded by a litter of gorgeous baby foals. Just enthralled by all this beauty before their eyes, they made up their mind and took SG Labib on a two year lease. SG Labib is currently standing at Capecci Training Centre for the breeding season 2018.

For sure this is a great opportunity European breeders should not miss to cover their mares with this wonderful sire and to give a significant boost to their breeding program.
