WINTER ISSUE / 2021 It’s hard to believe that the year has come and is almost gone. It seems like yesterday that we were still in the hot days of summer and were struggling with the heatwave of August. We’ve passed through a relatively mild Autumn, and as we come to December, it’s always good to take stock of the past year. After surviving the horrible effects of the pandemic, it’s clear that we live in a world loaded with risk. But, we have learnt how to go on with our lives and working commitments, staying close and adapting to the new circumstances. In Italy, the show-organizational machine has
carefully selected by the editorial staff. External contributors and experts of the sector have been keen to submit many papers and partnership proposals. We thank all of them and apologize from now on if we did not make it for all of them as we had a very tight schedule. We hope that they will continue to choose us as their preferred place of publication and graphic design e media service provider. So as we move into 2022, please feel free to drop us a line, provide suggestions and give feedback to help further develop our Magazine. But most importantly, continue to read, support
resumed working almost everywhere thanks to the efforts of a well-established and proactive circuit of affiliated breeders. As a Media Partner, Arabian Horse Magazine attended some of the most anticipated shows of the season: the 2021 Montefalco Summer Festival – the 35th Italian Nationals, the 9th Straight Egyptian World Championship (SEWC), and the thrilling 123rd Fieracavalli Verona hosting two unmissable appointments, the Verona International-B Cup and the European Championship reserved for the purebred Arabian horse. At an international level, the team flew to the Czech Republic on the occasion of the muchawaited Prague InterCup 2021 in September and, late in October, Abu Dhabi for the UAE National Arabian Horse Championship 2021. Thus, this Winter edition 2021 results from a busy-working quarter. The contents got
and advertise your beautiful horses on Arabian Horse Magazine! In conclusion, according to tradition, we on the team - Gianluca Martino, Noemie Zeller, Nazario Bizzoco, Debora Martino and Sonia Smaldone - extend our best wishes for a very Merry Christmas and a New Year 2022 full of happiness to all the members of this breeding community. We do thank you for your great support and positive energy. We have some new events and activities planned and will be announcing these in the New Year. We also hope to extend the range of our activities beginning next year, not just in what we offer our readers but also in being more of a presence by working for and participating in Arabian Horse Shows around the globe!

Hello Ms Jennifer. Thank you very much for accepting our interview. Let’s start from the very beginning. Please, introduce yourself to our readers, providing us with some background to you, your family and your education. Hello everyone! My name is Jennifer, 32 years old, Arabian horse breeder and artificial inseminator. My parents work in real estate. They built their empire from zero by working hard and believing in their dreams. It is how they educated me. I am what you can call a perfectionist, ready to work harder and harder to reach my goals. At school, I always wanted to be the best. And this refers to every aspect of my life. I always try to improve myself. I never take anything for granted and keep learning every day. So I can do better the day after. It is the real me. But fortunately, I have recently discovered I can find a bit more time for enjoying life by organizing my breeder’s life a bit differently, which also allowed me to challenge myself and finalize the judge courses for the National level. I am happy to be on the list as a young National judge now, a very new experience that pushed me to work on a new vision and helped me improve my breeding selection again. As I said, never stopping learning is one key to success, I think. I was so lucky that my parents supported me from the start. They trusted me and followed me in my crazy passion. I have no word to express how grateful I feel to them, how I admire them, how I love them. They raised me a silver spoon in the mouth, and I chose to work my 2 feet in the mud. And they accepted it. Because they knew my reason for living, it is my passion for the Arabian horse. Before I could speak, I would scream to go and see the horses of the equestrian centre next to our house. I was never afraid of them. They have always fascinated me. It is what you can call unconditional love.
094
What made you prefer the Arabian breed to all the other horse breeds? The Arabian Horse as a little girl, first of all, was a Dream and now I can say, a Destiny. Even in my Equestrian Center, I loved the horses looking like Arabians the most, the half Arabians. But nothing to compare with the first Arabians I met in real, show Arabian horses! They looked stunning to me, almost unreal. It

harlie Watts was born on June 2, 1941, in a very different London than we know. He is the last of the band to join the Rolling Stones. The fame will reach him in 1965 with the song Satisfaction when the band definitively took over the world music scene. The drummer develops a passion for music thanks to his great friend Dave Green, an English jazz musician and his teenage neighbour. Initially, Watts made his bones in the London blues environment, only later he became passionate about the sound of DJ Fontana, Elvis’s drummer. Charlie Watts is probably one of the most experienced drummers who ever lived and one of those who most influenced the world of music. The magic of him lies in that he was and always considered him-

self mainly as a jazz drummer. Analyzing the Rolling Stones drummer’s way of playing, Australian music historian Alan Howe comments that Charlie Watts “had a curious way of playing”. Watts’ power lay in the fact that he “has always played like a jazz drummer because he has always perceived himself as a jazz drummer”. In a rock ‘n roll world of excess, Charlie Watts has always been an anomalous rock star. He was a reserved person and known by all for his elegance. His impeccable way of dressing earned him two quotes. The British newspaper The Daily Telegraph named him as World’s Best Dressed Men. And, in 2006, the Vanity Fair newspaper cited him on the International Best Dressed List. A single great love accompanied him throughout his life for his wife Shirley Ann Shepherd, a London painter. Their love story began before the drummer met

Amazing stories about the Arabian horse can get told by amazing people who live and work with this noble creature! For the glitzy Winter edition 2021, which will accompany us towards Christmas and the start of a New Year, I got blessed by meeting a wonderful couple deeply involved with Arabian horses, Leticia David and Austin Colangelo. They live together in Texas, Us. They are both eternally in love with the horses, though having more specific and distinctive competencies and professional objectives. Let’s find out what they told me about their couple life with these extraordinary animals around them!
Hi Leticia, hi Austin! How, when and where did you first meet? How long have you been together now Austin, what impressed you most about Leticia? Leticia, same question for you, please! Austin - We first met in 2017 while working at Michael Byatt Arabians. I used to work there a head trainer, and Leticia came in for a year to work in the breeding department. We were housemates and hit it off right away. I was instantly impressed by Leticia’s focus and dedication as a Veterinarian. She was always relentless in her love and caring for all the horses on the farm. Leticia - What impressed me the most about Austin was his drive and love for his career. We both

As an Italian publication operating at 360° inside the Arabian Horse industry, we feel much blessed to be playing our small part in this ‘healing’ process by supporting, promoting and working every time we got asked to join in the forces, a peculiar trait of how we on the Arabian Horse Magazine /Team manage things. It felt particularly comforting to catch up with breeders-friends, the judges, the disciplinary commissioners, the handlers, the groomers and all the many who worked hard for it. The will to go on is out there in Montefalco. Thank you to the winners and the organizers. A.S.D. Arabian Horse Events started preparation months before with much effort to set back on stage this much-beloved competition in this beautiful corner of Umbria. See you next 2022 with other astonishing champions!

It AHM | 97
is a feeling I can’t explain in words. I only knew they were my future. One young filly, in particular, was on my mind for years. It took me years to buy her, and she is now one of my favourite foundation mares. Let’s say I was mentally prepared to fall in love. I watched the movie “The Black Stallion” even before I was able to read it. Later, I read the books. And at age 6, I wrote my first book that was a remake of the “Black Stallion”, of course with a girl as a heroine. Then, I discovered that the rare horse was a living Legend throughout all the beautiful Legends. I was spending my time looking after every information I could find about the Arabian horse, its History, myths and Legends. I bought my first specialized magazine at 7. I still have it now. And I started studying alone the names and pedigrees without knowing anything about what I was learning. At age 12, my interest grew up in genetics itself. I started learning it by myself, mainly focusing on genetic diseases, colour genes, and then I could understand more about the bloodlines and crosses this way. Every year, my parents used to take me to the Arabian Horse World Championship in Paris. It was the best moment of the year for me. And when I was 15, my parents bought me my first filly. I selected her, and she is still one of my foundation mares: Al Najba de Lam (AS Sinans Pacha & Sadowa
AHM | 98
de Lam by Pegase EF), bred by Alain and Anne Marie Coural, who became like a second family for me. They taught me the basics of my work as a breeder. I owe them a lot. Many of my horses have links with their excellent breeding program. We are still very closed altogether. The Arabian Horse is also creating incomparable friendships between passionate people. When was Kalliste Arabians founded? Which bloodlines are you mainly breeding there? I created Kalliste Arabians, meaning The Most Beautiful, in old Greek when I was 18. My first stallion BS Specific (Sandstorm JC & Basara Saiyana by Mel Nebli, had just been crowned European Champion stallion. He is now 21 years old, still looking outstanding, and so classic. He is a great breed improver like we are missing today, in my opinion. I mainly work with Russian influences. These are my favourite bloodlines, but I also use different ones, from Spanish to Polish, including Egyptian, French, and American, depending on what I want to improve or introduce to my breeding program as the basis for me remains to create beautiful and functional horses. I also breed some horses for endurance that in France remains an important activity. I want to contribute to proving that our show bloodlines can also perform in Endurance riding when they get intel-
ligently selected on legs and bodies.
It is a way of life. We all know it.
What does the word ‘breeding’ mean to you? What specific qualities or skills do you need to become a good breeder? Breeding, as an artificial inseminator, means spending considerable time at the stables with my horses, sleeping very little, optimizing the chances of success, performing ultrasounds checking and inseminating my mares. Then, dealing with the foaling process, educating the foals with my private methodology. It creates a strong bond between them and us as humans, preparing them for any activity from show to sport and family life. It is about sharing my methodology with the team. So we can communicate with horses in the same way. Sharing my bits of knowledge about treatments, injections, and many basic vet kinds of stuff I can perform to increase my horse daily security and survival. It is about working again and again on my breeding program by studying phenotypes and genotypes, bloodlines, meeting the stallions and the whole family and products, seeing the dams of the products, and so forth. Then, it is about managing the horses’ career, finding the best option for each of them by respecting them. And finally, it is about finding the best collaborators for promoting them, training centres in Europe or USA, handlers... So, being a breeder does not mean working as a breeder. It is way more.
What’s your philosophy? And your breeding strategy? What matters to me the most is to be the vector of positive evolution of the breed. I refuse to sacrifice the functionality of the horses I breed just for a more extreme head. I always base my selection on breeding complete horses. I do my best to protect the breed, to protect my horses. My philosophy is simple. My horses are my priority. Shows and trophies are just a plus. I also work on conditioning my horses’ minds. To make it easier for them to move to a training centre. So that when they leave, they are ready for this new adventure. Same for my endurance riding horses. We spend so much time educating and manipulating them. this is so important and also one of the signatures of Kalliste Arabians. Also, increasing the level of selection but making only very few babies per year is so important for me. I respect my broodmares a lot, no intensive breeding. And I use a few of my stallions, and a few stallions from

outside to bring new blood and different things to my breeding program.

Who is/are the most important breeding stallion(s) at Kalliste Arabians? Why? Let’s say it all started with BS Specific, this stallion of 1.60m is a classic beauty, he has the most amazing legs, body and eyes. He is in my opinion one of the last real breed improvers. He can produce show horses as he made some champions, sport horses as well, and family horses as he has the best mind. He is a sire of amazing broodmares. It is very difficult for me, as I started with such a correct high-level horse like this at the farm, to be seduced by weak horses I see often even if they have a lot of charisma or an extreme face. Then, of course, I bred my Dream Maker, Wortex Kalliste (by Shanghai EA), the proud son of my homebred multi-international champion Mirwanah Kaliiste by Marwan Al Shaqab. This horse made me Dream so high, over every boundary. He is an amazing show horse who loves performing at the show. He won Scottsdale as a junior, went Silver at the World Cup in Las Vegas with Ted Carson, then in Europe he won twice the European Championship as a junior and senior with Frederik Van Sas. They won a lot together in Europe and the UAE. I don’t breed a lot of horses per year at home, but I have some great Wortex’s progeny in here and breed some great ones in the USA.
Which of your mares are you mainly using to improve or evolve your breeding program? My major breeding and foundation mares are Mirwanah Kalliste (by Marwan Al Shaqab) out of the much regretted Straight Russian beauty Nakubaya Kossack, Avalon Miss Kalliste (by Marajj & Avalon Kortana by Kubinec), and L’A Saalmah (BS Specific & Starlight de Lam (one of my favourite foundation mares) by Pegase EF). From those mares, I have obtained some amazing daughters now as the next generation: Sigma Kalliste (Shanghai EA & L’A Saalmah), Khaleesie Kalliste (FA El Rasheem & Mirwanah Kalliste), and the recent French National Champion and young international champion filly Arté’Miss Kalliste (EKS Alihandro & Avalon Miss Kalliste). Sadly enough, I have just lost one of my greatest broodmares, Shamilah Jina Bea (Warandes Plakat & Julia Bea by Ponomarev) who left me her great daughter Jemma Kalliste (by Shanghai EA), also one of my hopes as the new generation. But also some daughters by my stallions Wortex Kalliste, Ares Kalliste (EKS Alihandro & Avalon Miss Kalliste), BS Specific, Styx Kalliste (Shanghai EA & L’A Saalmah). Are there any particular foals offering solid breeding and showing potential? Several ones. I always keep some of them secretly to avoid any pressure, but this year I will mainly concentrate on two of them: the recent French National Champion and young international champion Arté’ Miss Kalliste (EKS Alihandro & Avalon Miss Kalliste). The other is the recent French national yearling colt champion,

Absolutely Kalliste sired by Arté’Miss full brother, Ares Kalliste, and out of my Versace daughter H Ekzactly H. Arté’Miss is my only daughter to Miss Kalliste till now, and I love her very much. She is a keeper for my breeding program. The young colt named Absolutely Kalliste is one amazing young colt, very promising, he can compete in Europe and the USA. He is built for standing and is such a great mover, a very complete colt. I believe he will be one amazing stallion later. Both are shown by Frederik Van Sas and will compete at the Europeans. How do you tackle the concepts of ‘beauty and ‘functional correctness’ in our modern-day Arabians? My whole work as a breeder is based on this. For me, when I talk about show competitions to a novice person, I present it as competitions of morphology, locomotion, and performance. I think it says it all, this is how I usually carry out the selection of my horses. Where did your passion for morphology competitions spring? Please, outline some of the most significant victories in the show environment so far. It started at the Paris World Championships when I was only a little girl. I remember so many editions, so many Arabians. They made the atmosphere on the show truly magical, especially when the senior stallions were entering the arena and trotting like hell! People were standing up, crying of passion, cheering, screaming of joy, it was amazing... But I must say that only one victory of a horse took my breath away as a teen, for sure, that was Pianissima. Not very original you may think, but I have her image stamped in my mind. She was so incredible as a young World Champion, something new at that time...
Aliahandra Z
Bs Specific
What are the objectives you would like your breeding program to reach in the future? To keep improving, to keep respecting my horses and the breed, and to go higher in the results on the show scene and endurance riding competitions. Will you please leave a final message to the readers of this interview? The bigger lesson the Arabian horse has taught me may be summarized as follows: There are people who Dream of their perfect life, Some people Live their Dreams, If we work hard enough and believe in our Dreams, We can choose whom we want to be... I want to be the one who lives her Dreams, and you?

ders had continued working tirelessly on the construction, organization and coordination of the event in the previous months. Aware that a lot would have depended on the trend of the pandemic and the gradual return to normal. But they were very good at adapting to the emergency of the moment. The show ran quite smoothly in a festive, at times, goliardic atmosphere. After all, Life has always been their perspective. In the city of Pietrasanta, morphological events have always represented an added value to the entire tourist, cultural and commercial proposal in support of the local companies and the territory. The months to come will be crucial to get it back on track. But in the beautiful city of art, there are already very encouraging signs of recovery and revitalization!

Horse training and handling is a demanding profession for a man or a woman. However, Paweł Syliwoniuk is undaunted. His love for horses is overwhelming to the extent of spending twenty-four hours with the most elegant animal in the world. He lives in Poland and works at the famous Home of Champions, Stadnina Koni Michałów. Paweł devoted some of his precious time to my interview as a handler. To him, go our most sincere congratulations and best wishes for a bright future in the sector. Hello, Paweł. Just to set the scene with our readers, will you please give us some background to you, your family, and your education? I come from a family where horses have been present for generations, my father and grandfather deal with breeding of draft horses. For the first time I came across with Arabian horses in Janów Podlaski Stud. In 2010-2015 I attended the horse breeding Technical School, which I consider to be one of the best decisions I have made in my life. Thanks to practices that I had to undergo in Janów Podlaski Stud, I fell in love with these beautiful and incredible creatures which are Arabian horses. Then, I graduated from Kraków University of Agriculture with the title of zoo-technician engineer. Tell us a bit more about your early steps as a handler in this industry? Who is/was your mentor or source of inspiration? In Janów Podlaski Stud, Joanna Wojtecka and Paweł Kozikowski were in charge of training show horses, and I had the opportunity to see how such a training looks like. In 2015, I started working in Michałów State Stud and then under the supervision of Mariusz Liśkiewicz I started training and presenting horses in the rings. Mariusz is a person with a lot of knowledge who willingly shares with others and supports young people who start their adventure with shows. A significant role in my career was played by Robin Hopkinson. She made my work with horses become a pleasure. Together with Bart van Buggenthout they showed me step by step how to pursue professionalism and overcome barriers. I think that each of us should be surrounded by people who are not only mentors in professional matters, but are always nearby when you need them and you can count on them in any situation, even in the most difficult moments for
you. The people who know that you need support despite you don’t say anything and don’t ask for it. In addition to moments of joy, you also encounter moments of doubt or you just have a crisis and instead of patting you on the shoulder, these people will give you an energetic kick so that you can go further, climb higher, become stronger and completely determined in what you do. These people are like a red bull - they give energy, not take energy. Paweł, have you developed systematic training/ handling Arabian horses at Stadnina Koni Michałów? Will you describe this program? Is there a limit to what you can teach an Arabian horse through handling?
Working with horses is an endless limit of new experiences. Each horse teaches something new, forcing us to overcome our own weaknesses. New show season, new horses, new characters. It is impossible for me to imagine a better way to self-improvement than to constantly work with new/different horses. We become stronger and stronger in what we do when we learn from our mistakes. If we don’t see our mistakes, we will never make any progress. This goes for every area of life. Which are your favourite bloodlines? Why? Like all the people related to the Arabian horse world, I have my favourite horses, maybe it’s not a bloodline, but more a type of horse. I really like to work with horses that don’t have easy characters. Why? This is a method to power deAHM | 129

velopment, because each of these horses brings new ideas to your work, forcing you to find a way and solve the problem. Otherness is the most important in all of this. AHM | 130
What, in your opinion, really defines a good handler? What do you need to become a successful one? Patience, humility, conscientiousness, discipline, determination and persistence in pursuing the goals set for oneself. Talent is what a handler needs to become a successful one. In my opinion, the most important thing when you choosing to work with horses is love for these animals and sacrifice yourself 100% for them. A horse is your mirror reflection, that’s why you must be good to him. Often these are hard-worked days and sleepless nights. It’s not always the case that hard work pays off
with great results. The most satisfaction gives you the feeling that the horses you work with are happy and you can see how energy gushes out of them. What advice would you give to those willing to undertake a career as a Handler of Arabian horses? In my opinion, the best foundation for acquiring practical knowledge are the years worked in state studs, due to the number of horses there, the possibility of training some of the best horses in the world under the supervision of qualified specialists. To what extent do the shows organized in the UAE differ from those in Europe? I spend too little time at the UAE Shows to be able to express myself correctly on this topic. Paweł, to what extent the pandemic disease has affected your job?
The shows were cancelled so the horses I trained could not be shown properly. There was no Aachen 2020/2021, no World Championship 2020, which are very important shows. Clients from outside of Europe could not travel so selling horses was more difficult. What else would you like to achieve at this stage of your professional career? Gold medal in World Arabian Horse Championship! How and where do you see yourself in ten years? My strong faith will guide me on the path that is right for me. What that path will be we will see, let the next day come and we know a bit more... Would you like to leave a final message to the readers of Arabian Horse Magazine? Hmmm... Never give up, trust your instincts, work hard and believe in the impossible... AHM | 131

Arabian Horse Magazine felt very privileged to be in Pra-
gue this year to play its role as a media partner. We are particularly grateful to those national organizations like ACPKA ČR (Czech Association for Purebred Arabian Horses) that keep choosing us as supporters and promoters of their shows, even more in these hard Covid-times. And although we might be doing different jobs, we do share the same worries and the joys in this sector. And this show in Prague brought together many of us in good harmony and fruitful cooperation. Thus, we want to thank the people of ACPKA ČR and their President Jaroslav Lacina for their kind invitation. We truly appreciated it. We spent two lovely days full of sport and timeless elegance. Thank you to the many sponsors of the participating classes whose financial backup is always crucial. In particular, we are grateful to Al Shaqab Stud, Dubai Arabian Horse Stud, Hanaya Stud, Al Thumama Stud, Emirates Arabian Horse Society, Al Jood Stud, Al Shiraa Arabians, Al Baydaa Farm, Al Sawfa Stud, Al-Sheikh Stud, Arabian Insider, Arabian Essence and Tutto Arabi. In conclusion, thank you to all the breeders and their respective teams, the judges, the disciplinary commissioners, the handlers and all the people who contributed to make it a success. Written by Sonia Smaldone
harlie Watts was born on June 2, 1941, in a very different London than we know.
Their love story began before the drummer met AHM | 161
the Rolling Stones and continued until the last day. After their marriage in 1964, they had a daughter, Seraphina, born in March 1968. Watts was never a person who liked to flauAHM | 162
nt his wealth and his fortune. So much so that while his bandmates collected luxury cars, he never even got a driver’s license. He considered cars to be objects that were simply beautiful to watch. The English artist has always felt a relationship of love and hate for touring. During an interview in 2003, he stated that, while he loved playing with the band, on the other hand, he had never been interested in “becoming a pop idol always surrounded by screaming girls”.
Preferable to harrowing sound checks and dressing room fug, however, was the peace and fresh air of his and Shirley’s manor farm at Dolton in Devon. Hunting, fishing and shooting never sounded appealing to the vegetarian couple, but outbuildings included the stables of Halsdon Arabians that Shirley will continue to run. Superlative quality care and pragmatic intuitive husbandry have always been at the central core of the Halsdon management philosophy. This hands-on practical approach to the daily life and routine of equine residents has served Halsdon well over the past three decades, as it has grown from a small collection of riding horses to a uni-
versally esteemed powerhouse of over 250 horses. At the epicentre of the

Halsdon approach to all horse, husbandry is the tried and true philosophy and practical approach to the State Studs of Poland. Perhaps, nowhere in the world is the social nature of the equine more appreciated and nurtured than in the stables and paddocks of Janów Podlaski, Michalów and Białka With so many mares and stallions of Polish origin comprising the Halsdon herd, the Watts were astute enough to understand the needs of their horses and were quick to adopt many of the housing styles and daily routines of the Arabian horse in Poland. The Polish-influenced stables design is most evident at Elder Park and Sunridge Farm, two of the busiest properties falling under AHM | 164
Halsdon jurisdiction. New and converted stables got built according to the ‘open stable’ concept, which is the cornerstone of mare and foal in Poland. The couple has always admitted to greatly admiring the concept and the social interaction it inherently provides for all the horses. For them, it was only logical that Halsdon should duplicate this successful approach in the UK. “The open barns are great for sociability,” Shirley once explained. Except for the stallions, all horses are housed full-time or part-time for daily turn-out in a socially intensive herd environment. As they grow, young fillies and colts continue to live in the open stables that maximi-

ze the health and well-being of the horses housed within. While the well-being of the horses was the primary consideration in designing the open stable concept at Halsdon, the sights and sounds of horses living in these stables have continued to be immensely rewarding. The sounds of munching hay, limbs rustling through the straw, the rhythmic swishing of tails, the soft nicker to a foal or a friend – this is the music of the stables. At Halsdon, horses know where they belong,

their place in the herd. There is understanding and a sense of peacefulness. As in Poland, stallions are housed close to each other by interactive access afforded via the open bars surrounding the upper half of each box stall on three sides. Sniffing, nuzzling, licking and generally, rambunctious stallion behaviour is allowed and encouraged, the result of which is a collection of exceptionally content and socially well-mannered stallions. The stallion stables at Halsdon are surprisingly quiet and peaceful, given the machismo and testosterone levels present in many world-famous residents. The first stallion to captivate Shirley was Piechur (1979) (Banat x Pierzeja by Bandos), who lived on Halsdon for more than 22 years. Another stallion that has always taken her breath away is Simeon Sadik (1989) (Asfour x Simeon Safanad). As for the current stallion roster,
WN STAR OF ANTIGUA
Shirley talks about three of them with a particular fondness. Preferans, his sire HS Etiquette, and the newest addition WN Star of Antigua, a son of Monogramm on lease from Al Shaqab Stud, Qatar, residing in the stable of honour nearest the stud office and client room. Mares, the symbol of Halsdon excellence worldwide, comprise the bulk of the equine herd. Over 120 breeding aged mares reside on the 800 lush acres of Halsdon Stud, most of which get housed in paddocks equipped with shelters year-round. Gestating mares AHM | 165

are brought into the open stables in the final months of pregnancy to receive additional rations. Once mares foal, they remain stabled with their foals in the open- barns until weaning, usually five to seven months later. Albula (1994) (Fawor x Algeria) was Charlie’s favourite mare as well as her two daughters: HS Albertina (2014) and HS Altesse (2005). At the Pride of Poland Sale in 2009, he paid the highest price for a lot, taking home the Polish mare Pinta (2005) (Ekstern x Pilar) for the amount of €500,000 ($ US 707,000). quiring the stunning Janów Podlaski mare Altamira (2005) (Ekstern x Altona) at the price of € 250.000. When asked what they most enjoyed about horses and the wonderful life they have lived alongside them, The Watts once affirmed without hesitation: “Just being among them. We love to feel the heat of their bodies, to listen to the rhythmic cadence of their breathing, to relish in the quiet satisfaction of belonging. They make us feel like we belong. Charlie used to enjoy the

company of those extraordinary creatures more than humans. Once he said: “Not that I loathe my species, but they’d find me a miserable little man after a while.” Shortly before his death, media reported that he had undergone surgery and that Steve Jordan would be taking his place on the Stones’ No Filter Tour of the US. To the news of his death, everyone bowed down before paying homage to him. Even the ex-Beatles Paul McCartney, who on Twitter remembered him as “a lovely boy” and “a fantastic drummer” who was “steady as a rock”. Ringo Starr wrote, “ Rest in peace, Charlie Watts.

A chiusura di un anno durante il quale il movimento allevatoriale italiano si è fatto promotore di importanti eventi di morfologia, vedere anche i cancelli dell’Horse Riviera Resort di San Giovanni in Marignano aprirsi
At the end of a year during which the Italian breeding movement has promoted important Arabian horses events, watching the gates of the Horse Riviera Resort in San Giovanni in Marignano opening up again to beautiful Arabian specimens was either comforting or exciting. The 2021 edition could take off thanks to A.N.I.C.A., the generous support of the Sponsors, and all the breeders who remained faithful to such a significant event in Italy. During his concluding speech, the President of Anica Vincenzo Pellegrini warmly thanked all those who voluntarily contributed to the success of the show: the judges, the disciplinary commissioners, and the professional handlers intervened. The entire show had world exposure, as it was broadcast live with Live Streaming from A.N.I.C.A. official website and the Arabian Essence website. For our part, we plan to see you all again in 2022 with a new line-up of exceptional champions!

Prizes went to both owners and exhibitors, and an award to female horse owners got included for the first time to spur them to carry on this activity with pride. The presence of Jaroslav Lacina, President of the European Organization for Arabian Horses (Ecaho), at the championship competitions got very much appreciated by H.E. Mohamed Ahmed Alharbi and all the other venerable members of the Emirates Arabian Horse Association for his playing a pivotal role inside a professional organization committed to the promotion of the Arabian Horse internationally. Lacina eulogized the endeavours of the UAE and its institutional bodies addressing the pandemic, which in this part of the Arabic Peninsula contributed to the rapid return to normality. We on the AHM team were truly blessed to be there and enjoy this remarkable event in the UAE. We are most grateful to Show manager H.E. Interviewed by Sonia Smaldone Amazing stories about the Arabian horse can get told by amazing people who live and work with this noble creature! How long have you been together now? Austin, what impressed you most about Leticia? Leticia, same question for you, please! Austin - We first met in 2017 while working at Michael Byatt Arabians. I used to work there as head trainer, and Leticia came in for a year to work in the breeding department. We were housemates and hit it off right away. I was instantly impressed by Leticia’s focus and dedication as a Veterinarian. She was always relentless in her love and caring for all the horses on the farm. Leticia - What impressed me the most about Austin was his drive and love for his career. We both

share the same passion for horses, and that connected us. I truly admire his work and dedication. He impresses me every day really, I can’t be more proud of him, of the incredible person and trainer he is. Guys, what are the essential ingredients for a healthy and happy couple life? For us, essential ingredients have been a love of horses and this lifestyle. Relationships are hard work. But when you have similar goals and passions, it makes things so much easier! AHM | 260
Austin, what first captured my attention as an Italian publication, was your Italian surname. Can you tell us more about your Italian origins? Yes! My father’s family moved from Italy to Argentina in the early 20th century, and my father was born in Argentina and moved to the United States when he was 11 years old. I’ve always been proud of my Italian heritage, and it has been very influential in my life! Leticia, can you inform us a bit more about your involvement with the Arabian horses? What do you do exactly at Stella Bella Arabians? Doctors Benjamin and Michelle Bassichis, whom I am very grateful for, hired me in 2018 to assume the position of breeding manager at their Stella Bella Arabians Training Centre located in Dallas, Texas. I am responsible for the entire breeding department that includes managing and following up on the mare herd, donors and recipient mares, the inseminations,
the flushes, embryo implants, foaling, neonatal care, and so forth! I am not toughly responsible for the breeding decisions. I prefer to leave that to the experts. Austin, on your Instagram profile, you define yourself as an athlete and a professional horseman dedicated to enhancing - and promoting - the Arabian horse. a) Can you further comment on this statement? b) When did you first approach an Arabian horse? c) What do you exactly do at Stella Arabians as a trainer? d) Do you also show horses in the US? I have been around Arabian horses and the Arabian community since I was seven years old. Even as a child, I have always been mesmerized by Arabian horses, and it was my childhood dream to be able to train and show them here in the USA and around the world. I now run my training centre here at Stella Bella Arabians thanks to Stella Bella’s Owners, Dr AHM | 261

Ben and Michelle Bassichis. Not only my mission, but our mission as a farm, is to promote the Arabian horse so that others can experience the same love and passion that we share! Leticia and David. To what extent does this shared passion for the Arabian horses affect your couple life? I think it affects our lives in a very positive way, we cultivate and share that same passion, and that’s what keeps us going! Have you ever travelled together to any Arab countries? We have not, but intend to! Arab culture is fascinating! And I would love to visit our many friends in their native countries! Is there anything else the two of you would love to achieve at this stage of your professional career? We have so many goals we have yet to accomplish!
Where do you see yourselves in ten years? Would you like to form a family one day? Will you educate your children to live by and love the horses? Ten years is a long way away! I imagine, in ten years, we would love to have built what we are building now into a better and more successful endeavour! Our plans don’t involve children at the moment! But if we do, we would teach our children to love and care for horses the way we do! As we are slowly approaching Christmas and the end of the year, would you please leave a final message to all the readers of this interview? Have a great rest of 2021, enjoy your life, love your partner and love Arabian Horses!

Interviewed by Sonia Smaldone Giulia Castra was born in Ancona, on the Cònero Riviera, Adriatic Sea. With her boyfriend Francesco Ulivi, she owns Cònero Arabians. Giulia has displayed a vibrant artistic vocation since she was a little girl, and she masterfully applies it to her passion for the Arabian horse. The resulting outcomes are beautiful artworks that speak for themselves, conquering a large share of Arabian Horses’ breeders and lovers around Italy. Giulia gladly welcomed my interview, and she answered my questions with an ever-seen before enthusiasm.
Hello Giulia. Welcome on board! Will you please introduce yourself to our readers? Hello to all the readers of Arabian Horse Magazine! My name is Giulia Castra. I’m 30 years old, and I live in Osimo, a town in the province of Ancona, in the Marche region, between the sea and the mountains. My boyfriend and I share a strong passion for Arabian horses. It has united us to the extent of creating Conero Arabians. An idea that I have always had in my mind but which we are now making a reality together.

lit up in me when I bought my first two fillies in 2014. To date, my partner Francesco and I have managed to give life to this dream with the birth of our first two fillies. We breed different bloodlines like Russian, Polish and Egyptian ones. They differ in structure, type, movement and other characteristics, and origins. It has allowed us to create our ideal of Arabian horse as each has well-defined features. It is the reason why we breed, and will always breed, various bloodlines on our farm. Who was your first mare? And your cornerstone stallion? My first mare was FM Farah Nevaeh, a daughter of Amir Ashiraf x Tihanj, bred by our dear friend Michele Perillo. Soon after, I bought BLA Shina, a black daughter to Magic Magnifique x Jafars Shania, bred by Kathleen Ohlsson. Two mares, carrying different bloodlines, as my concept of breeding.
From whence this passion for the Arabian horse? When and where did you first meet an Arabian horse? My passion for the horse was born when I was a little girl. I started riding when I was six, and I have always attended riding schools taking lessons to learn how to ride. But I still remember the first time I met an Arabian horse. I was fifteen. I had the opportunity to ride it and get to know it, hence my passion for this exceptional animal. So I started to get closer, through the riding school I went to, to the world of endurance, where the Arabian horse is the protagonist thanks to his strength and vigour. Since that time, the Arabian horse has never left my life. Thanks to my family, I was lucky enough to own my first Arabian horse named Salero, a Russian-Polish line gelding born at Janow Podlaski, with whom I undertook several endurance races. When have you founded the Conero Arabians breeding program? Which bloodlines do you breed? Why? Conero Arabians was born as a simple idea that
Tell us a bit about how is your breeding program evolving. Who are the most recent births in the barns? Our breeding program is now emerging with the arrival of the first two fillies born out of our mares. The firstborn is Quintessa CA, a gorgeous grey daughter to DA Vinci FM x FM Farah Nevaeh. A filly with a great structure, very refined and with a movement that leaves you speechless. The second born is Duchess CA, a magnificent bay daughter to Sultan GK x BLA Shina. She has an extreme head, solid structure and verve that distinguishes her. How do you tackle the concept of *beauty and *functional correctness in modern Arabian horses? What do you look for in an Arabian horse? In my humble opinion, functional correctness and beauty go hand in hand. The Arabian horse is famous for its endurance, sturdy legs, short and solid back, and versatility in different disciplines. It is why the modern horse must also meet the requirements of a complete horse. Not only beautiful and typey, with a refined head and big and expressive eyes. What I look for in an Arabian horse is completeness, beauty and type. But also a correct structure to ride him.

Giulia, have you always wanted to be an artist? What came first, the Arabian horse or the art of painting? When I was a little girl, I discovered that I got gifted at drawing. Despite that, I never thought of being a full-time artist. For me, it is a passion as well as a way to escape and express my emotions. This passion was born before that for the horse. But I managed to bring the two together since the subject I love to portray the most is the horse. Where do you find the inspiration for your works? Inside you, or do you feel you need to get inspired by what is around you? Let’s say that I am inspired by what surrounds me, but above all, by everything that arouses emotion in me. I like portraits to capture every little detail of the subject to make it as expressive as possible and convey my feelings to the viewer. What is your approach to horses in general? Why is the horse such a central theme in your life as well as in your works? For me, horses are not just animals to ride, but companions to share every day of my life, able to cure all my discomfort and make me forget a bad day. For me, it is a lifestyle that, on the one hand, requires commitment and sacrifice. On the other, it gives me strong emotions. For this reason, it is also a central theme to my works. What specific technique do you use? Or do you mix different ones? My favourite technique is the pencil one. But when I feel more inspired, I also try other techniques such as watercolours and tempera. Which one is your favourite artwork? And your favourite horse? (If any) My favourite work of art is Botticelli’s Venus,

every time I see it, I am overwhelmed by a vortex of emotions. My favourite horse instead is Magnum Psyche, the very first one that stole my heart. What is the best way for a potential client to reach you? I am active on social networks. Potential clients can reach me out through the Facebook or Instagram pages of Conero Arabians or my profile. How has the ongoing pandemic affected your breeding business and your life? The pandemic that has hit the planet has slowed down all our breeding projects. But it has not stopped us. We managed to organize things despite being locked in the house first for quarantine. Then for contracting the virus. It was horrible, but it seems that we are slowly returning to normal! It has put a strain on us, but we have come out stronger than before. Giulia, what are your hopes and dreams or future goals? Where do you see yourself in the next five years? In the future, we will certainly be moving our breeding farm to our home and expanding it with other mares. We strive to breed top quality horses and bring Conero Arabians to an international level by participating in many shows. In the next five years? Well! I hope I will have achieved all the objectives listed above! Would you like to leave a message for the readers of Arabian Horse Magazine? Of course, I would like to thank those who have always encouraged me, believed in my ideas and projects. I owe a lot to my partner Francesco and my parents who support me in every choice. I would also like to thank our dear friend Gianluca Martino for this opportunity and Sonja Smaldone for this beautiful interview!
