For a better understanding of the Genesis as well as of the true History of the First International Competitions, I reckon it is worth making a few comments of technical nature in as much as key factors for success of the International Days of the Arabian Horse created in 1973, while ensuring a fervent appreciation from breeders around the world. The number of participating horses in “Models and Movements” Classes has been steadily increasing over the years, however, my aim was to maintain a high level of quality by limiting the number of entries on the one hand, while focussing more on getting a genuine interest of the audience on the other.

A comparison between levels of attendance relating to the first period is most significant for the multiplicity of opportunities being offered to registrants: for instance: 1973/55 - 1980/134 - 1981/141 - 1982/178 - 1983/151 - 1984/156 1985/152 - 1986/162 - 1987/139 - 1988/155 - 1989/134 - 1990/144 - 1991/139 1992/136 - 1993/131 - 1994/128. In 1975, the allocation of Judges by class changed from a single Judge-based traditional system to a number of four judges, all separated, which caused a small revolution. I focused my attention on selecting a wide variety of judges from several countries so that different points of view could be given on the purebred Arabian horse, a great innovation that was unanimously welcomed by all breeders in its effort to secure greater fairness. For a decade, I kept defending and never compromised on a principle that was going to be implemented since the very inception of the competitions. Despite countless external requests, the names of the judges were not made public until the day of the competition, the Judges themselves were never informed “a priori”

n these troubled times for all human kind being faced up with the spread of a deadly unknown virus, the purebred Arabian horse international sector is undergoing profound and extensive changes. The most affected European countries are tackling the pandemic by limiting the number of friendly events that are organized outside mandatory
organizations, but able to bring together true enthusiasts of the Arabian horse. Since 2016, the Event organized by Horsmunity has been representing a strong encouragement for those breeders who keep defending horses with pure Egyptian bloodlines that have not yet been affected by fashion or commercial trends of the day.

The two previous sessions of the organized visits took place in Egypt and hosted Mrs. Claudia Darius in 2017 and Mrs. Christine Jamar in 2018, each one talking about their own personal experience as a professional breeder by also giving reasons for their own judgments in competitions; truly an important experiential background which arouse strong interest by all

ARABIAN DREAM 2020 ECAHO B - INTERNATIONAL SHOW - Treviso Written by Sonja Smaldone Due to a second spike of Covid-19 pandemic in autumn 2020, the much-awaited 2nd edition of Arabian Dream was shifted back to the long weekend from 11th to 13th December and it was held in the beautiful structures of “ASD Circolo Ippico del Cristallo”, located in the area of Treviso. Despite the cancellation of the official dates, along with all the upheavals of the moment, ArabianVibe Srls, under the leadership of Mr. Gianluca Martino, kept working intensely, incessantly and amazingly on the preparation of the event that besides the Ecaho affiliated B-International show hosted the Futurity Championship with the Females and Males born in 2020 sponsored by European Breeders Trust; the Aljassimya Amateur Classes sponsored by Aljassimya Stud from Qatar and reserved for non-professional handlers; the Straight Egyptian Event, and the last leg of the Italian Show Tour 2020, reserved for horses born and bred in Italy and owned by Italian breeders. The ECAHO B - INTERNATIONAL SHOW registered a beautiful handful of Arabian specimens coming from different regions of the world, including many national and international champion horses who already exist in the historical record. We had the privilege of working with an extraordinary judge panel composed by: Mr. Gianmarco Aragno (Italy); Mr. Fausto Scanzi (Italy); Mrs. Anna Stajanowska (Poland) and Mrs. Michaela Wedined (Germany). With the rank of Disciplinary Commissioners: Mr. Giampaolo Teobaldelli (Italy); Mr. Roberto Ceccaroni (Italy) and Mr. Marco Capello (Italy).
Gianmarco Aragno (Italia); Sig. Fausto Scanzi (Italia); Sig.ra Anna Stajanowska (Polonia) e Sig.ra Michaela Wedined (Germania). Con il grado di Commissari Disciplinari: Sig. Giampaolo Teobaldelli (Italia); Sig. er subjects are not Horses, but Emotions. They take the shape of the horse because they are strong, indomitable, and instinctive. These are the thoughts of Federica Crestani, a Venetian artist from Soave, a lovely town located in one of the most beautiful areas surrounding Verona, between centuries-old vineyards and green hills as far as the eye can see. Federica is officially an architect, but in her heart, her emotions, and everyday life she is, first and foremost, a contemporary artist who is very well-known in the equestrian field for her stunning works, which are characterized by a personal reinterpretation of German Romanticism in oil painting combined with wire sculpture. Hi Federica. Welcome on board! Just to set the scene with our readers, can you please give us some background to you, your
family, and your academic record?
Although art has become one of my professional channels, I am a self-taught artist. After high school, I graduated in architecture and I specialized in landscape architecture in the city of Venice. I also continue to work as an architect. It is a job that I like very much. I love many things, and nowadays it is just no possible to confine myself to a single role. My genetic heritage has played a fundamental role in all that: my father founded our Real Estate, Consulting, and Interior Design family business, so my technical part comes right from him. My mother is a Psychotherapist who, among other things, follows several projects of rehabilitative art therapy, hence my vocation to the world of art intended as a cathartic tool. I have inherited the love for horses from my paternal uncle.
Have you always dreamt about becoming an artist or did you have other ambitions as a child? I have been painting horses since I was a child,

Who is Krystal Dawson? Please tell us about yourself, where you are from and about your family. G’Day Guys and Gals, I was born in Australia NSW Hunter Valley area called Maitland, filled with lots of farm land, wineries you name it! When I turned 19, I moved on my own to Sydney to pursue more modelling and I still have the pleasure of going back to see all my family three hours away at any chance I can. How and when were you discovered as a model? Did you always want to pursue modelling? When I was 8 years old, I did a fashion show and realized I love the stage. At age 17 I did a modelling and gait course, at age 18 I started competing in modelling

enuine beauty, intelligence, hardiness and agility have been specific features of the pure-bred Arabian horses born and raised in the Arabian Gulf area for hundreds of years, with the Bahrain Peninsula being held as the most distinguished reservoir of the original breed. For a very long time the purity of this breed has been ensured by the dry environment of the desert regions where this precious blood has been jealously guarded through a highly selective breeding of specimens, the dominant qualities of whom have long been sought for strengthening the breeding base of plenty of
farms around the world. All of the European missions have been thought out to acquire these extraordinary subjects. History tells us that nearly two centuries ago, the al-Khalifa family brought to Bahrain a good deal of *Oriental horses with pure blood, while a few anecdotes concern more specifically the famous war horses of Bahrain taking part in the local military action back in 1928. about the classes they would be called upon to judge, which prevented any entanglement of interests in a long while. I created a scoring system that I borrowed in part from the assessment principles set in the figure skating world since I used to practise this sport in my young days, namely, the 0 to 20 points system adopted by each judge on three basic criteria ‘’Type – Model – Movements’’, points were being immediately displayed on big plates, and no readjustments were possible because the whole process was being monitored and controlled by a computer, a debut which had far reaching effects. The public as well as the breeders have long appreciated this system since it held the promise of fairness on all the horses in the arena, everyone could follow the progress of the competition as closely as possible reporting comments on their catalogue in real time. After having proved its worth in Europe, this principle came to be widely endorsed by other countries of the world. It was a rigorous and accurate system which prided itself on its catalysing first and foremost the interest of the amateur public, by keeping it informed and impassioned at all times, seats were always overcrowded in the stands, all people were there to watch what was a major animation inserted within the framework of the Salon du Cheval.
INTERNATIONAL DAYS OF THE ARABIAN HORSE FIRST PERIOD 1973 TO 1994
In this amazing adventure starting in 1973 with the encouragement of Mr. Jacques Chalom des Cordes, 1st President of the French National Association of Breeders, I put all my passion and I spared really no efforts; for almost twenty-two years, nothing on this earth could stop me from promoting a breed which was little known at the time. A far-sighted project that I would never have been able to carry on without the encouragement and support from breeders-friends and first-rate collaborators, all of whom were pivotal to the success of this mission. All sticking together, we used to be such a great team where each of us in his own way and style gave proof of exemplary professionalism and commitment. From 1973 to 1994, the competitions were managed by Agence Française du Cheval Arabe (Law Ass.) 1901) as a part of the Salon du Cheval in Paris that at the time was organized by Spodex, these included: 1973 Parc Floral de Vincennes - 75012 Paris 1974 to 1988 Parc des Expositions Porte de Versailles - 75015 Paris * International Days of the Arabian Horse * Dressage Events + Show Jumping Events + Native Costumes Classes * European Championships (1980 - 1988) 1980 to 1994 Parc des Expositions Porte de Versailles - 75015 Paris * The World Championships In this beautiful era in which competitions were held under the principles of sportsmanship and fairness applied to every international breeder, without making distinction; a major effect of this equitable system could be clearly seen in the breed AHM | 47
gaining wider recognition and increased popularity around the world. With the grace of the spirit, I created the first panel of International Judges by calling on personalities with real experience in breeding or with a correct approach to the breed according different personal criteria. Many of them are now serving in the European Organization to judge at national or international competitions worldwide. Hereunder, I put a list of all the experts selected during the First period, grouped by Category and Year of competition: *A - Judges names at the International Days of the Arabian Horses European Championship & World Arabian Horses Championship Al Adawy Faroukh (Oman) (Royal Stud) Al Hussein Al Saleh (Jordan) 1994 Barbié de Préaudeau (France) (National Stud farms) 1979-1980-1981-1982-1983-1984-1992 AHM | 48

COMMENTS
In those years fully devoted to the promotion of the breed, of the so-called “Oriental” horse, several specimens ignited the hearts of many amateurs: Elsissa, 1971 by Figuroso & Etica by Tabal - Stall Melissa-Netherlands Emperator, 1987 by Menes & Ellavia by Stargard Odessa Arabians-Usa Imperial Mashar by Imperial Madheen & Imperial Jamaabah - H.M. King Hassan II - Morocco Monitor, 1988 by Nikmroz & Matritsa by Topol Tom Hudson-UK Kubinec, 1987 by Balaton & Kosmetika by Muscat Gestut Stockle -Germany The above-mentioned horses were all specimens of exceptional quality, showing spectacular gaits with a stunning but natural “look” that spoke for itself and mesmerised public audiences; swarms of people would gather in the stands to find a place, almost creating a riot in those historic days. An absolute truth that quite often required the security service to close spaces.

CONCLUSION AND ACKNOWELDGEMENTS
I would like to express the greatest possible gratitude to H.M. King Hassan II of Morocco as he firmly believed in my project, as much to offer me his High Patronage for several years. Heartfelt thank you also go to HRH Princess Lalla Amina of Morocco, HRH Alia Bint Al Hussein of Jordan, Mr. Henry Blanc and Mr. François Clos of the French National Stud farm, Mr. Jean Dayné, former President of Spodex, Senator Michel Souplet, former CEO of Ceneca and Mr. Marc Couillens, Director of Ceneca at the time. I still hold dear the purebred Arabian horse, the Breeders, Owners as well as all the professional’s, but, particularly, the passionate Amateurs. We should not forget Mr. Guy de Fontaines, a loyal collaborator, who has always been there to support me in this extraordinary adventure; to this day, he deservedly remains the greatest French specialist of the breed along with all the teams and partners involved in this common endeavour. Tributes to William Richardot de Choisey for the creation and for the many successes of the World Arabian Horse Championship.

orse training and handling is a demanding profession for a man or a woman. However, Davide Mariani from Italy is undaunted. His love for horses is overwhelming to the extent of spending twenty-four hours with the most elegant animal in the world. Davide lives in Sarsina, near Forlì-Cesena, Emilia
Romagna, where he owns and runs the well-known Mariani Arabians. Hello, Davide. Just to set the scene with our readers, will you please give us some background to you and your family? How and when did this passion for Arabian horses begin? My passion for the Arabian horse was born at a very young age as my uncle owned several horses, including an Arabian mare
AHM | 70
that became my favourite. With the purchase of my first Arabian horse in 1996, my dream came true. You ask me about my family. Family is everything to me. Always there to support me in this job that I love so much. If I hadn’t had it around me, it wouldn’t have been possible to realize what I have now. Since I stepped into the Arabian horse world, my life has changed. I have had the opportunity to travel the world and get in touch with different civilizations and ideas. When were Mariani Arabians founded? Which bloodlines are bred there? Let’s start from this assumption, I like all Arabian horses. Beyond the pedigree, a horse must be as balanced and correct as possible in all of his aspects. The perfect horse does not exist, but from a morphological standpoint, the harmony of the body lines, elegance, and floating supple movement are qualities or characteristics that an Arabian horse must necessarily have. Mariani Arabians were founded in 2010 when I was still in the Unite d Sta-

tes, where I lived and worked at Raymond Mazzei’s Furioso Farm. There, I bought the foundation mare of my breeding program, Cedars Bellavia by Laheeb, a straight Egyptian female. I had met her sire Laheeb in 2006, on a business trip to the same stables. Since that day, I have always thought that my main goal had to be to buy a daughter of him. Laheeb had something special about him that made him look so different from all the other stallions. So, I made up my mind, and I bought this mare in 2010, which marked the beginning of the Mariani Arabians breeding program. Davide, have you developed a systematic program for handling Arabian horses at Mariani Arabians? Can you describe this program? Is there a limit to what you can teach an Arabian horse through handling? When it comes down to training, handling, and everything related to the show performance, I have developed the method that I have perfected over the years. Not all horses are the same, each horse needs a
particular approach, so there is no standard job. There are several approaches, but the basic concept is to educate the horse without using coercive methods. The horse must learn the teachings without stress, it is necessary to establish a connection with the animal. The final goal is for the horse to recognize you as a fellow.
AHM | 73
schools, different methodologies, and approaches. Not less important, I had the opportunity to work with great experts in the sector. Which show have you been to as a Handler most recently? One of the last shows I attended was at Fieracavalli Verona where I won a gold medal with my stallion Jameel MD and a silver medal with another stallion, not of my own.
What, in your opinion, really defines a good Handler? What do you need to become a successful one? First of all, it is necessary to acquire the basics and gain work experience at specialized centres. In Italy, there are many. I would strongly suggest doing some experience in the United States. For me, it proved to be a decisive one. I came into contact with different
AHM | 74
How important are the Fairs of Arabian horses? Shows play a crucial role as they give all fans and experts the chance to meet up, exchange ideas, compare breeding strategies and start new projects. In recent years, the industry has become very specialized and highly professional. Things have changed compared to the past, and to keep up, you need to have plenty of resources today. Nothing wrong with this. I only think that more support should go to smaller breeders and professionals in these Covid-19 times. How and where do you see yourself in ten years? I hope I will continue to breed my horses as I am doing right now, but my next goal is to become a judge. Thank you, Davide. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors. And may all your dreams come true!

A FARM TOUR IN EGYPT Year 2020/2021

n these troubled times for all human kind being faced up with the spread of a deadly unknown virus, the purebred Arabian horse international sector is undergoing profound and extensive changes.

Christine Jamar in 2018, each one talking about their own personal experience as a professional breeder by also giving reasons for their own judgments in competitions; truly an important experiential background which arouse strong interest by all

attendees joining this interesting platform that clustered mainly local Breeders, but addressing the handlers and the judges as well. The 2020/2021 Egypt Farm Tour was jointly orchestrated by Arabian Horse Magazine which is strongly involved in the promotion of this Event with an aim of making Egyptian breeders better known in the world because they know very well how to preserve bloodlines of exceptional sires. The visit onto the Farms selected by the 2020/2021 Farm Tour puts the purebred Arabian horse carrying ‘Asil’ Egyptian bloodlines back where he belongs. All the guests expressed their admiration for horses full of pure blood, natural type, lean and well-balanced bodies with steel limbs, well- planted on the ground in all their gaits. In Egypt, traditional breeding has been preserved for a very long time by the local authorities as a ‘national treasure’ inherited from the Royal Stables owned by King Farouk I, Head of the Royal Agricultural Society. For many decades, his successors did not allow imports so to avoid contaminating a precious pure blood that the

world has long venerated. Luckily enough, only few specimens from particular outside strains have been introduced to this thousand-year-old land which intends to safeguard its own values. The establishment of this Farm Tour is an important initiative to show the international industry what remains still ‘beautiful’ in a country willing to remind us that horse trade is not all, and that the freedom to breed exceptional horses with no outside contaminations must be protected in Egypt more than elsewhere in the world. A very big thank you to Albadeia Stud, Albidayer Stud Egypt, Al Rawasy Stud, Al Sheikh Arabians, Al Wakeel Stud, Al Waly Arabians, Donato Stud, El Farida Stud, El Sayad Stud, Ezzaman Stud, Kiriazi Stud, MF Arabians, MN Arabians, NTK Arabians and Sahara Khan Stud, for their extremely warm welcome that brings hope for better days in future, but, above all, for giving us a unique opportunity to see extraordinary horses that keep offering a Vision of Beauty that cannot be forgotten by those enamoured of the genuine purebred Arabian horse.

Hello Mr. Mohammad Waly. Welcome on board! Let’s start from the very beginning. Please, introduce yourself to our readers. Give us some background to you and your family. With origins in Agriculture and Building Construction, currently our main bread and butter are in Real Estate Development. I am the 3rd generation in the family business going back to 1958.
AHM | 84
When were Al Waly Arabians founded? What’s your philosophy? And your breeding strategy? The Stud Farm was officially founded in 2007, but our equestrian activities stretch back to the early ‘90s. We aim to have a small herd yet of high quality. Our focus is on form and health first, highlighting type and character with our herd being a strong selection of special bloodlines that are bred without prejudice.
AHM | 85
Who is/are the most important breeding stallion(s) at Al Waly Arabians at the moment? Why? Our choices of stallions are purely based on quality and compatibility with our mares. We do our best to select strong outcrosses to our mares while sticking to our philosophy and vision. Farah Al Waly ( Bariq Al Shaqab x Farida Al Baydaa ) AHM | 86
Amira Al Waly ( Madheen Al Nakeeb x Tarheeb Albadeia )
Which of your mares are you mainly using to improve or evolve your breeding program? Our current herd consists of 3 foundation mares which are the backbone of our breeding program, and are being supplemented by our fillies each year. Who are the latest and most important additions to the Al Waly Arabians breeding program? Our first new filly to enter the breeding program, Farah Al Waly, is by Bariq Al Shaqab and out of Farida Al Baydaa. She is truly an embodiment of the attitude and character we love to see.
Where did your passion for morphology competitions arise from? Please, tell us something about the most recent victories in the show environment. Being an animal lover and a young equestrian, my love for horses,

particularly the Arabian horse is long-lived. Morphology competitions highlight our fascination with the animals we love. We have managed to claim first-in-class prizes with our previous stallions, however, we do not breed for competitions, we breed for passion and the love of the breed. What are the objectives you would like your breeding program to reach in the future? Our vision is to breed the best examples of our beloved breed that are not only beautiful but also amazing animal companions as they were in their desert origins. What’s the best way for a potential client to reach you?

Hello Maha Ibrahim. Welcome onboard. Let’s start from the very beginning. Please, introduce yourself to our readers. Give us some background to you and to your family. Thank you Arabian Horse Magazine for this opportunity, it is a pleasure to introduce Ezzaman Stud to your readership. I am the only child of an upper middle class family, born and raised in Alexandria, the famous metropolitan city on Egypt Mediterranean coast. I went to a French School and I graduated as an Architect Engineer from Alexandria University in 1999, the graduation project was an Equestrian Games and Activities Village in Gouna on the Red Sea. My love for horses and horseback riding started early in my childhood. In addition, I have over time developed my own artistic taste by travelling, exploring different cultures, arts and architecture, attending musicals and concerts. I like photography, I enjoy playing Tablah (oriental drums) and as a Scorpio, one of the water signs, I love the sea with all its activities including kitesurfing. When was Ezzaman Stud founded? What’s your philosophy? And your breeding strategy? My passion for the Straight Egyptian Arabian horses started in 2003, at the dressage competi-

tions, when I met Nicole Knoth and Sultan Sharbatly. We became close friends and I did some architectural work at Al Sharbatly stud. Thanks to them, I started building my knowledge about Arabian horse breeding, bloodlines and got in contact with many breeders from Egypt and abroad. After good four years of intensive observation, Ezzaman Stud was founded in 2007. As I learned that a strong foundation of broodmares is the base for a successful breeding program, I chose carefully the bloodlines I would work with, studied the dominant characteristics and developed a critical eye and my own taste. To create my own equine family, I followed my feelings as well as my knowledge. In my understanding, breeding is about achieving a higher level of beauty and charm, while maintaining a good body structure, correct movement, attitude and presence. This requires a close follow-up of different breeding programs both on the national and international levels. Love is the secret spice for breeding, a loving atmosphere is very important for the stud team and it reflects on the herd well being too. We are all one family called Ezzaman.

gree reflects the good genes he carries. He turned out to be an excellent representative of Al Jazira Stud and proved to be a very good producer in Egypt.
Who is/are the most important breeding stallion(s) at Ezzaman Stud at the moment? Why? Let’s first agree that every stallion with a clear good stamp on its offsprings is an important one. It is very important for every breeder to know what is somehow expected when breeding to the stallion. Our main stallion at stud Malik el Nil al Sharbatly is a DF Malik Jamil son out of a Ghazal sakr daughter. Malik joined us as a weanling colt with a very distinguished look, strong movement, compact body, beautiful head with fine features and lots of charm in his big black eyes. As a stallion, he stamps his look and good qualities. He produced high quality offspring at our stud, among which the National Gold Champion Filly of Egypt 2018 Sana Ezzaman and National Gold Champion Colt of Egypt 2019 Majd Ezzaman. Malik sired many other good quality fillies and colts for many other breeders. Together with NTK Arabians and Seso Stud, we are blessed to have Mahmoud Al Jazira on lease for the third breeding season. He is by Sinan Al Rayyan out of a Messaoud daughter. A leggy balanced refined stallion with fine bones, nicely shaped neck with a good set and deep shoulder. You can’t miss his nicely placed dark eyes, well set small ears, and squared muzzle. His special pedi-
Which of your mares are you mainly using to improve or evolve your breeding program? Well, that is really an interesting question! Some very successful breeding programs were built on one broodmare from a certain tail female line, but my concept was to have different strains and different bloodlines to work with. DF Riyah is a Sabah, Dahman Shahwan family; Sharuby al Sharbatly, and Majara al Qusar are Om Dalal, Saklawi Jedran line; Sara al Sharbatly is a beautiful Hanan, Abbayan Um Jress mare. And our very special Majeda goes back to Samiha/ Venus, Hadban Enzahi line. When I started, I was keen on having different lines yet with common main characteristics such as well defined heads, solid bodies, refined bones, strong movement. Time flies, we have already reached Ezzaman’s third generation, but still my very first mare, DF Riyah by DF Malik Jamil out of Glenglade Rofira, has a special place in my heart, she is a free spirited bay mare with an amazing impulsive floating movement. She is very typey, with lots of charm, she stole my heart with her elegance and power. DF Riyah has very dominant genes and passes her character onto her progenies over the generations. Who are the latest and most important additions to Ezzaman breeding program? We were truly blessed with a beautiful group of fillies sired by Mahmoud Al Jazira in the last few breeding seasons, his first daughter born in October 2018, Reema Ezzaman out of Razan Ezzaman, Dahman Shahwan family, is a superb flea-bitten filly. We couldn’t be luckier as her full bay sister Rihanna Ezzaman was born in January 2021. As well as Mahy Ezzaman from the Saklawi Jedran family, she is a very special filly with attitude. Every breeding season, I pick up a couple of mares for outside breedings so to maintain an open gene pool. Sharuby Ezzaman is a successful example for the cross breeding of Ansata Hejazi bloodline with Maydan Madheen, she is out of Shaza Ezzaman by Imperial Madori and sired by Jamil Adam by Jamil Al Rayyan. An elegant correct filly, soon

will become a solid broodmare. From an architect perspective, breeding is like building. So, a new star has joined us in December 2020, Al Qusar Latif, a very promising young colt, bred by Robert Schlereth, Al Qusar
Arabians, Germany. Latif is by NK Lotfy out of Pamira al Qusar by NK Hafid Jamil, he has a very special pedigree and he definitely represents it. I trust - I am confident - he will become a successful breeding stallion. Where did your passion for morphology competitions arise from? Please, tell us something about most recent victories in the show environment. When you are still on the learning stage, the show gets to be of a great interest for you. At every possible show – both local or international - you get the chance to see a group of high quality horses all gathered in one place. You learn about the pedigrees and you get an idea about successful breeding combinations. The role of the

fessional evaluation of my progress. I was very happy with any placement achieved. Till one day in April 2018, I went back home with three Gold Champion titles - two of them are my own breed - a yearling filly Sana Ezzaman and a promising yearling colt Moez Ezzaman. The third went to Mahmoud Al Jazira as a Gold Stallion Champion. Afterwards, it gets to be an addiction, you want to get a title every time you compete. In 2019, Sana Ezzaman won Silver Junior Filly Champion at Rabab show. Also in 2020, Reema Ezzaman won Silver National Junior Filly Champion of Egypt. On the international level, Moez Ezzaman - owned by Al Wakeel Stud - won Bronze Junior Colt Champion at Milan Straight Egyptian World Championship 2020. What are the objectives you would like your breeding program to reach in the future? The real challenge is not just to produce a champion, but to maintain in most of the offsprings the balance between a good level of beauty with correct proportional body structure. My aim is to manage to produce high quality offsprings with an exquisite look that represents Ezzaman breeding vision. I am glad that some of Ezzaman horses are part of other breeding programs in Egypt. And I am honored to have few ambassadors at Al Wakeel Stud in Iraq, to take part in the restoration of the Iraqi Arabian Horse heritage. Still, I am looking forward to having more Ez-
Will you please leave a final message to the readers of AHM? With no past there is no future, and if it wasn’t for the effort of the great older breeders who worked hard to hold the Arabian horse heritage together and built upon it, we wouldn’t have reached the quality of the modern Arabian horses. I was lucky to have met many of those famous breeders, observed their programs closely and learned from them and I was blessed to have found those who have helped me and guided me honestly through the path. They all have my gratitude. As for my advice to all the new beginners, knowledge is the best base to start with, not only about bloodlines and genetics, but as well about the well-being and welfare of the horses. Keep learning along the road, don’t underestimate any breeding program as there is something to learn from every breeder. Love what you do and believe in your dreams. Thanks a lot for your contribution Maha Ibrahim. It was an honor to talk to you. Best wishes on behalf of the whole AHM Team.

Hello Nicole! Thank you very much for accepting our interview. Let’s start from the very beginning. Please, introduce yourself to our readers. Give us some background to you and to your family. My Name is Nicole Tatjana Knoth, I am German and I have been living in Egypt for 24 years. I am a Clothing Engineer – my work is what got me to Egypt, but my passion the Arabian horses - is what made me stay. I am living happily on the outskirts of Cairo with my husband and his four kids, three dogs and two cats. As you can guess, I am a crazy animal lover. When was NTK Arabians founded? What’s your philosophy? And your breeding strategy? In 2016, I founded my own stud NTK Arabians, after already 15 years of breeding Arabians under the name of my former husband’s farm – Al Sharbatly Stud. I come from a riding background, so a functional horse physically and mentally is essential for me. In my breeding program, I am looking for a special charm in the horses, which should not be mistaken by breeding for a head. It’s the whole magic way a horse can take you. That is my main focus point in breeding and, at this point, I can look over mistakes in my horses as long as I am aware of these mistakes. I try to focus on
one or maximum two main things I want to improve in my mares and then choose accordingly. Lately, the ultimate goal is for sure to pass this charm on all of my horses on top of a perfect conformation. Who is/are the most important breeding stallion(s) at NTK Arabians at the moment? Why? We have together with Ezzaman and Seso Stud, Mahmoud Al Jazira who has been standing with us on a lease for 2 years now from Al Jazira Stud of Kuwait. I have believed in him since I first saw him, so I intensively used him over these last two breeding seasons and he proved me right. Mahmoud produces very balanced foals and always improves the mares. He conveys this charm I was telling you about, on top of beautiful heads and eyes, good shoulders and neck. He also increases a bounce in the movement, which is special. In addition, he conveys beautiful sweet disposition to all of the foals – just like him. I really love this stallion and I am very grateful to his owner Mr. Talal AlMehri who gave us the chance to use him in our programs.

Which of your mares are you mainly using to improve or evolve your breeding program? I have ten broodmares on my farm going back to three families and strains. All of them are bred by myself, some of them reaching the third generation of my breeding program: • Hadban Enzahi – Malak al Sharbatly (Simeon Sharav x Zizi) this mare herself was Gold Champion as a yearling filly. She produced several show champions and her show attitude and strong character are passed onto her 4 generations that she gave me. • Saklawi – I have a couple of mares going back to Bint Saemah of Peter Gross. I call these my German straiAHM | 98
ght Egyptian horses and they all have an extreme refinement and type. • Dahman – Abeer el Nil al Sharbatly (by Ansata Murtajiz) and Angham el Nil al Sharbatly (by Hilal el Nakeeb) are my representatives of the Nile family going back to Arousat el Nil Rahim by Imperial Madori, one of the most beautiful mares ever. Who are the latest and most important additions to NTK Arabians breeding program? (Latest crops of foals) Last year I was blessed with a beautiful filly out of Mahmoud Al Jazira - NTK Shaya by Shadwana al Sharbatly. She is for me very close to my ideal and I hope and pray she will continue her development as I expect and wish for. My other big addition came by fulfilling a dream I
NTK Aya El Nil
had since very long, which is to own a stallion from Dr. Nagel’s breeding program. I love this man and his horses and their type. NK Nadirah is a mare which took my breath away and gave me goosebumps – this year I managed to acquire her grandson by NK Nabhan. NK Nemir is still only 11 months old, but I believe he will make me proud as the future sire of NTK Arabians. Where did your passion for morphology competitions arise from? Please, tell us something about most recent victories in the show environment. I always liked shows and competitions and I was never afraid of getting judged. Even with the politics going on in the shows sometimes, I believe at least the first and second places are usually the right picks. I think it is important to see your horses in a class with direct comparison to others, you can and
should learn by this, it is not just about winning. I had horses shown in Europe and Egypt over the last 10 years with several champion titles. With the change of my life and building up my new farm, I stayed away from the show scene for the last years, concentrating on breeding and building up my farm. Just last year I decided I am ready to show again and entered the Rabab Championship 2020 with 4 horses, which were all placed. NTK Maya placed first in the class of the three years old fillies. NTK Aya el Nil placed second in the two years old fillies and later in the championship she was awarded the Bronze Champion. This was a very special win, as I showed her myself in the championship. What are the objectives you would like your breeding program to reach in the future? I wish that one day one of my own breeding AHM | 99

products will have the quality to be shown and winning internationally. Don’t get me wrong, I am not breeding for the show, but I have my own vision of the look I like, which I am breeding for and I don’t follow a fashion look. But, I believe the Straight Egyptians should and can compete with the other Arabians too. What’s the best way for a potential client to reach you? Sure, by phone: # 002 01222129311 or email: nickiknoth@gmail.com Will you please leave a final message to the readers of AHM? I am grateful for AHM to give me the opportunity to talk about my passion, the Straight Egyptian Arabian horses, and I hope more and more people will get interested in and fascinated by this special breed. These animals have so much to give, it makes you forget all the lows and losses we as breeders have to go through. Keep it up! Eventually they will pay you back in their own way. Thanks a lot for your contribution Nicole Knoth. It was an honor to talk to you. Best wishes on behalf of the whole team!

O
ur great German friend and photographer Joanna Jonientz has a natural gift for capturing Arabians. In her photography horses appear so close to us as if they were within our reach and we could feel their breath. Joanna has loved horses since her childhood. She has been able to transpose her natural ability into a profession through encouragement and lots of personal work, travelling around the world to immortalize traditional breeders in the company of what is dearest to their

heart, that is, Arabian horses, by them considered as God given creatures. She made many of those trips in various countries of the Middle East which are the cradles of the breed,
particularly, Bahrain in the Arabian Peninsula, Jordan, Kuwait, Syria, but especially Egypt, a country so dear to Joanna
because there, as she explained, “breeders are still authentic and their hospitality springs from a genuine impetus to honour the visitor”, in a way that is hard to find elsewhere. Therefore, Joanna lends us her delicate eye to share her interest in and involvement with the breeders of this country, which has managed to preserve and protect its equine heritage without resorting to external contributions. As she points out, “Egypt still possesses rare bloodlines that shine forth as a treasure for all mankind”. Her eminent work represents a great “asAHM | 103
set” having received numerous International Awards, such as the well-known National Geographic Magazine, which did very well in publishing this living testimony into it. Speaking through images is
AHM | 104
a concrete success that Joanna feels to share with all of us. She joins the Pantheon of that select group of photographers who are not subject to the constraints of the current North – South divide, which continues to be fuelled by petrodollars. Poised between the desire
AHM | 105
and the need for representing the breed, our outstanding photographer has in store for us more breath-taking pictures that will always make us dream and will awaken our
passions in Part 2, next year. Thank you Joanna for sharing with us such a truly genuine passion for the purebred Arabian horse.

ocated in Greece, JM Arabians owned by Iosif Mertyris is one of the most notorious and successful private breeding programs in Europe dedicated to international quality production. Iosif dedicates a lot of love and passion to the Arabian horses. He believes that this is the key to long-time success in all aspects of life. For the 2021 Dubai edition, I had the honor to interview him, and he was happy to walk me through the main stages of his activity as a breeder and spokesman of the Arabian horse. Hello, Mr. Iosif. Welcome on board! Please, introduce yourself to our readers, give us some background to you, your family, and your education. My name is Iosif Mertyris, I am Greek, and I come from the east coast of the Peloponnese. My country is called Ermioni, a beautiful peninsula on the Aegean sea. I lived in Italy for many years, and I did my university studies at La Sapienza of Rome. I live with my two children and my wife, who is also from Ermioni.
AHM | 110
What made you prefer the Arabian breed to all the other horse breeds? I got involved with the Arabian horse by chance. I have been to Israel several times for business reasons. On one of those business trips, I had the opportunity to see many Arabian horses. I have chosen this breed for the pleasure of a free ride. I own two straight Egyptian horses at the moment, one female and one male. I took them with me here to Greece, and both live on my farm with all the other horses. For me, it was love at first sight. Morphology, pride, and the ability to communicate with the Arabian horse are what I love the most. When were JM Arabians founded? Which bloodlines are mainly bred there? JM Arabians were founded in 2018. But the new farm was built in 2020, on a beautiful hill with lots of greenery and natural water sources. The Mediterranean climate is quite suitable for Arabian horses. What does the word ‘breeding’ mean to you? What specific qualities or skills do you need to become a good breeder? Breeding means you have a dream. It requires tons of patience, unconditional love, and knowledge, which is never enough.

Rasheem. The mares with Ajman Moniscione, WH Justice, Marajj, and Marwan Al Shaqab bloodlines are also a good match with D Ibn Rasheem.
D IBN Rasheem Progenies What’s your philosophy? And your breeding strategy? My philosophy is to believe and try up with different bloodlines with different conformation and morphology. And strive to make my dreams come true. Bear in mind that not always a champion stallion and a champion mare will give you a Champion foal...
Are there any particular foals offering good breeding and show potential? The breeding products of JM Arabians are already at a very high level. I can safely say that Afrodite (D Ibn Rasheem x Lei My Star) is an exceptional filly, and I can’t wait to take her to the first shows. There are other sons to D Ibn Rasheem that are quite handsome, such as the colt Achille out of Almara KA daughter of QR Marc. I am always so impressed by the way D Ibn Rasheem corrects and improves the overall morphology. He passes so much onto the new foals, even with mares that are not so good.
Who is/are the most important breeding stallion(s) at JM Arabians? Why? The spearhead of the JM Arabians breeding program is D Ibn Rasheem, a son to FA El Rasheem out of the mare Angeliccha, now standing at Capecci Training Center (Italy). Perhaps, he is the son who resembles him the most. He is a young stallion boasting to his credit some of the most coveted titles in the world. At age 5, he is already an exceptional reproducer and, I am sure that his foals will do great things at shows. I also own an Egyptian stallion from the Thee Desperado bloodline, and a son to Ajman Moniscione called Ajman Star. Which of your mares are you mainly using to improve or evolve your breeding program? Right now, I own two Egyptian mares. A daughter to AL Ayal, and a black daughter to Burak Ben Eden, both very compatible with D Ibn

chen, and twice the World Championship in Paris, winning two bronze medals and the best head award under the lead of Paolo Capecci. In addition to this, I won the Gold Champion title at the International show in Milan, in Verona, and the Silver Champion title in Ströhen, Germany. What are the objectives you would like your breeding program to reach in the future? I would like to produce new future champion horses and to be able to participate and win the World Champion title!
JM Arabians Farm Our work as breeders is quite hard. We are looking for the top model by Armani or by Versace. But we must be objective. We love so much the foals which were born in our hands that sometimes this makes us lose our point of view. Arabian horses don’t have to be only beautiful. They must be correct and functional horses in the first place. They must move as if they were flying on the ground. They must be proud. Modern Arabians look very fine, with extreme heads, statuesque bodies, a lot of type and movement. Please, outline some of your most significant victories in the show environment so far. I have participated in almost ten top-level competitions so far, like the All Nations Cup in Aa-

ARABIAN DREAM 2020 ECAHO B - INTERNATIONAL SHOW - Treviso Written by Sonja Smaldone Due to the second spike of Covid-19 pandemic in autumn 2020, the much-awaited 2nd edition of Arabian Dream was procrastinated to the long weekend from 11th to 13th December in the beautiful structures of “ASD Circolo Ippico del Cristallo” located nearby Treviso. Following the cancellation of the official dates with all the upheavals of the moment, ArabianVibe Srls, under the leadership of Mr. Gianluca Martino, kept working intensely, incessantly, and amazingly on the preparation of the event that besides the Ecaho affiliated B-International show hosted the Futurity Championship with the Females and Males born in 2020 sponsored by European Breeders Trust, the Aljassimya Amateur Classes sponsored by Aljassimya Stud from Qatar and reserved for non-professional handlers, the Straight Egyptian Event and the last leg of the Italian Show Tour 2020, reserved for horses born and bred in Italy and owned by Italian breeders. The Ecaho B - International Show registered a beautiful handful of Arabian specimens coming from different parts of the world, including many national and international champion horses who already exist in the historical record. We had the privilege of working with an extraordinary judge panel composed of Mr. Gianmarco Aragno (Italy), Mr. Fausto Scanzi (Italy), Mrs. Anna Stajanowska (Poland), and Mrs. Michaela Wedined (Germany). Disciplinary Commissioners: Mr. Giampaolo Teobaldelli (Italy); Mr. Roberto Ceccaroni (Italy) and Mr. Marco Capelli (Italy).

The second edition of Arabian Dream will be a date to remember for several different reasons. Following the lockdown from the beginning of April 2020 that had led to a period of stalemate in the morphology show industry, the success of the event organized by Gianluca Martino demonstrated its ability to act as a driving force for the resumption of the general activities, responding to the expectations of many professionals, especially the youngest. The qualifying classes were all of outstanding quality, the handlers were very focused, and each gave their best in the arena. The ending ceremony was very moving. Good boy! Thanks to Mr. Adriano Della Vella, owner of ASD Centro Ippico del Cristallo, and all his staff for the warm hospitality and first-class cooperation. Thanks to Maria Baleri, Stefano Serni and Fieracavalli Verona for having been the best Partner ever in this project. Thanks to Anna Scarpa, the voice that talked smoothly all along with the show. Thanks to photographers Paola Drera and Alessio Azzali. Their stunning shots will always testify to the success and the joy of those days. At the end of a really difficult year due to Covid-19 which affected also the Purebred Arabian horse sector, watching the gates of the Centro Ippico del Cristallo that opened to horses competing in the last leg of the 2020 Italian Show Tour was really a great emotion. The Italian event was reserved for horses born and bred in Italy and owned by Italian breeders. On Sunday 13th December, the arena of Arabian Dream turned tricolour, with magnificent purebred Arabian horses who paraded and took turns when the bell rang. The event came to an end with the following final results:

Interviewed by Sonia Smaldone
er subjects are not Horses, but Emotions. Just to set the scene with our readers, can you please give us some background to you, your
AHM | 168
family, and your academic record?
I have been painting horses since I was a child,
AHM | 169
doing now it’s one of my secret dreams. I am happy I have followed this path through a channel that allows me to have a 360 degree-view.
Federica, you come from an ancient land exuding history, surrounded by vineyards and long-lasting wine tradition. What’s your relationship with the territory? Do you enjoy living there or are you more of a traveller person?
and, of course, I dreamt of being an artist. However, I also wanted to be an astronaut, an archaeologist, and an architect. In short, it would take me two or three lives to do everything! But yes, I admit that what I’m
AHM | 170
I love traveling but, I have very little time to do it. Getting in touch with different places, cultures, and people is quite an enriching experience, and it allows you to have a multi-perspective vision. Furthermore, every new contact becomes a vital source of artistic inspiration. But, preserving my roots, it’s
what matters to me. I have a strong relationship with my land, and the idea of doing something that may bring good things to my territory it’s something that has always been there in my mind. And that’s what I’m trying to do now with my job.
Where do you find the inspiration for your artworks? Inside you or do you feel you need to get inspired by what is around you?
I have to use a metaphor to answer this question. Let’s imagine representing the human body through a representation on a white canvas that we try to keep intact with more or less effort to have full control of it. At some point, we feel something inside us that we can no longer manage. We perceive a visceral emotion that
we are unable to keep underneath our beautiful white surface. At that point, this reaps open because emotions have to come out, and this is when the “Sturm und Drang” that stirs in us must manifest itself in
AHM | 171
AHM | 172
some form. Mine has taken the shape of a horse. Why the horse? We are dealing with an animal that thrives on c o mp l e m e n tary contrasts and whose emotional balance is always changing. After all, what are our emotions? When people started asking for my “Emotional self-portraits” through the horses, I began looking at the whole world through the equestrian allegory. Today, I can also paint the ‘soul’ of people in the way I perceive it, of course. My clients tell me their stories. I feel very honoured by what they share with me. They also decide the level of depth I can get from their accounts, and they know that their deepest emotions will remain only between us, imprinted in that gesture or in that colour. So, I tell the life of the people through my horses. Since I paint emotions, the work can only be said completed if it has an emotional impact on the subject portrayed. My horses come into shape straight from the emotions of the people I meet, so it is an inspiration that continues to grow by itself.
Federica, tell us a little about the “Art & Cavallo” exhibition. How and when did your cooperation with FieraCavalli Verona begin?
I first exhibited my artworks at the Jumping event in Fieracavalli 2018, with a small solo show. Afterward, I was contacted by the team of the Exhibition. They proposed me to use my paintings for the 2019 advertising campaign with a strong desire to give an ethical cut to the message to deliver. I was also required to design a new format for a collective equestrian art salon composed of various artists.
AHM | 173
initiative is not just an exhibition for its own sake. But, it is an ever-expanding cultural network. One of the many objectives is to make an international art competition in the framework of the salon. That is quite a long way ahead, but all the people involved in this project show great enthusiasm.
Our Magazine is one of the largest specialist publications in the industry of the Arabian Horse. Have you ever met one? What is your approach to horses in general? Why is the horse such a central theme in your artworks?
This is how Art & Cavallo came to life as the first artistic exhibition space entirely devoted to the Horse in Fieracavalli Verona. It was a great success. I got soon contacted for Fieracavalli 2020. Since then, the collaboration has started on several levels. A process of contamination through art began alongside new laboratories, new projects and new images for the event. Today, Art & Cavallo keeps growing. We are working with professionals and companies to ensure that the AHM | 174
Yes, of course! The Arabian horse in motion is something that can only be truly understood by seeing him live, which is why the image that associates him with the personification of the wind fits perfectly. My approach to the horse in general? I decided to take riding lessons a few months ago also to overcome my fear of them. I have always had some sort of reverence for horses, they look so majestic to my eyes. By working and interacting with these beautiful animals since the start of my collaboration with Fieracavalli, I have taken my step forward to experiencing the emotional binomial but not only from the ground. The horse with his great sensitivity represents human emotion to perfection. This is why in the A.I.A. (animal-assisted interventions), horses are the most suited animals for people who experience problems of various kinds.
Federica, your technique involves oil painting in combination with wire sculpture. Why did you choose this specific mixed technique?
In reality, it is a technique resulting from continuous experimentation. I started with only oil painting, but, the two dimensions of the canvas, were not enough, so I introduced the first tears to break down the wild spirit of the horse. With time, those protrusions took the shape of the essence that cannot be contained in two dimensions but needs three dimensions. It was a gradual step forward. The first paintings had only the manes that came out, then I started with the legs, then with the heads up to even building real sculptures that come out of the paintings. I call them The Released Souls. The black iron wire represents the sign of the initial pencil sketch, essential and pure. I didn’t want to choose between sculpture and painting. I didn’t want any borders.
Which one is your favourite piece?
There are two: “Il Salto di Bucefalo” a triptych of 8 meters that later became the advertising campaign of Art & Cavallo, and “La Corsa” for the Jumping advertising campaign 2019-2020. The first piece symbolizes what I really mean by emotions that come out of the canvas, and it wants to be a tribute to all the artists. The second represents a turning point in my life. It is a self-portrait.
What effect do you think the Internet will have on art in the future? Has it affected yours?
I am not so keen on social media, quite the contrary. I think they are a mystifying reality too much. However, these can be useful tools from a professional point of view. Today, artists are allowed to reach audiences and places they previously had no way of reaching out. Furthermore, art bears the social responsibility for spreading an ethical message among people. I hope that the use of the Internet will take a smarter direction in this sense.
What is the best way for a potential client to reach you?
As mentioned earlier, many clients get in touch with me via Instagram, Facebook, and email. Of course, there is the exhibition space with the artworks of the Fieracavalli campaigns that people can see in our studio - atelier.
Federica, what are your hopes and dreams or future goals? Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
For the next five years, I want to continue devoting my life to do good things through my work. I hope our studio will have the Vision to blend art and architecture into cultural projects set on the agenda.
Thank you very much, Federica. The Artworld is anxiously awaiting your future creations. It was a pleasure speaking with you!

udging Arabian horses conformation takes practice, but anyone who has spent quality time around these beautiful creatures can learn to do it. Judges usually look for a combination of balance, structure, muscling, gait, and breed-specific features. For the 2021 Spring edition, I had the honour to interview Mr. Carmelo Zaragoza Gimenez from Lleida, Spain. He was very pleased to walk me through the main aspects of his own professional experience in judging Arabian horses. Hello Mr. Zaragoza Gimenez. Thank you very much for accepting our invitation so kindly. Just to set the scene with our readers, give us some background to you, to your family and education please. I was born in 1968 in a traditional family. One of the most valuable things my parents provided me with is education, best schools in the area and countless extra escolar activities to complement my formation. At my early teens, I had a school friend whose parents had a cow farm. One day, his parents purchased him a horse and he invited me to spend the weekend on the farm riding the horse and having some fun around. Just in the moment I sat on the horse, the ‘seed’ was planted, but many years should pass until it flourished. Going back to my schooling period, it came the time to choose which studies I wanted to perform at the university. I told my parents
AHM | 204
I wanted to be a vet, their immediate answer was that it had nothing to do with the family business and would be useless so they ‘proposed’ to study something that would be useful for the business such as Accountancy, Law, Economics, etc… so I chose to study Law. While I was at the university, I had a girlfriend who also was studying Law, with whom I used to go in the mountains and some others destinations at weekends. During those trips, if I saw a horse in a field or a riding centre, I would stop the car and spend some time just watching the horses. Once in one of those stops, she told me why, if I liked the horses so much, didn’t buy one? Sooner done than said, I was the owner of a horse. From there, I started to meet people related to the horse world until nowadays.
AHM | 205
AHM | 206
When did you start getting interested in the pure-bred Arabian horse? Which are your favourite bloodlines? Why? Around 1998, I was involved with some Andalusian horse breeders, passing the reproductive test for the army to give the license and I was also preparing some of them to compete in the morphological shows of the breed. It was from the hands of the brigade of the delegation of the army in my town that I started becoming more interested in Arabian horses. It was in an event where there were Andalusians and Arabian horses that I first got trapped by them. My favourite bloodline is the straight Egyptian one, for me they got ‘something’ which I am short in words to describe, but that makes me feel they are special. At some point, I got many of them until I got divorced and life gave me some twists, all part of my growing process. When did you become a Judge? What specific preparation did you get? I think it was 2001 or around, cannot be precise about that, I passed the test for national judge and the 3 probations required for passing the test in Morocco for the ECAHO International list and also the 3 probations required. I got great memories of that time in Morocco, we received great attention from the organizer and some fun with the people we presented there, special mention deserves Mr. Koenraad Detailleur, who made all that experience very enjoyable. What do you feel has been your most rewarding experience as a judge? Being able to see and judge some of the best Arabian horses in the world and not less important, meeting really great people involved with the Arabian horse at all levels. What horse or horses have you judged that have left the greatest impression on you? Many. Some stallions and mares just took my heart when they entered the arena, so I am not going to name any of
AHM | 207
them as I don’t want to make the mistake of missing one.
become quite complicated. The worst is the uncertainty of what is to come.
What are, in your opinion, the strengths of the breed and how do you tackle the concepts of ‘beauty’ and ‘functional correctness’? Intelligence, movement and elegance. First of all, an Arabian Horse must be a good horse and then he has to manifest, strongly, the specific characters of the breed, head and neck, tail carriage, movement, with a high and long suspension in the trot and elegance holding it all together.
If you were empowered to effect change in the Arabian World, how would you go about it? This one it is hard to answer. There are many people with many interests, lots of business …Maybe I would put more ethical values requests to get certain positions in the Arabian horse world. What else would you like to achieve at this stage of your professional career? Nothing, I feel fulfilled enough for not having further ambitions than staying and enjoy my current position. I have been the Spanish delegate in ECAHO for many years, Vice-president of AECCA, the Spanish Arabian Horse Breeders Association, international judge, running the family business with my brother, I am a very happy husband with some hobbies to attend, I don’t miss anything in my life to be honest. Carmelo, do you feel like leaving a message to the readers of this interview? I just thank everybody who has dedicated some time reading this interview about me.
Which particular skills are necessary to become an accountable judge? Well, I don’t think there is a receipt for that, it helps experience in judging and very important for me, being involved with horses in any way, riding, breeding, etc. What advice would you give to a young person who wishes to pursue a career as a judge in this sector? Patience, tones of it, will for learning, be humble and try always to be fair. To what extent has the current global health crisis been affecting the industry? I think hugely in a very negative way, less shows, less sales…Everything has

CONCLUSION: The Katara International Arabian Horse Festival was a wonderful experience and a distinctive mix between the past, the present and the future. It represented an important step forward, reinforcing the relationship between the world of Purebred Arabian horses and the public, who was there to discover all that is so special, beautiful, different and charming about this breed; a tradition, which has always been there in Katara. Prof. Al-Sulaiti expressed great satisfaction that the Festival, featuring one of the highest total prizemoney in history, had concluded successfully. He also noted that the participation of twelve countries in the very first edition of the KIAHF was an outstanding achievement. Al-Sulaiti highlighted that the highest standards of integrity and fairness were upheld during the Title Show, as the entire proceedings were held in accordance with the standards and rules set by European Conference of Arab Horse Organizations (ECAHO). He also thanked all the sponsors, partners, officials, artists, and exhibitors at the Festival
for their valuable contribution. The officials, judges, and members of the Disciplinary Committee were also honored by the General Manager. Art lovers were in for a special treat. AlBahie, the Qatar-based auction house, held an auction titled ‘Al Aseel.’ On the block were various pieces of equine-related artwork by international artists. The five-day Festival had featured several equine-related exhibitions and a postal exhibition. Besides the impressive Title Show, spectators were treated to a taste of Qatari heritage. They were introduced to Hariri Al Shaqab, the poster-child for KIAHF and a world-famous stallion that has won numerous international awards and championships. Audiences were also presented with a remarkable light and sound laser show accompanied by a parade of Arabians and their riders dressed in traditional costume. Spectacular fireworks display and illuminated drones featured horse and rider along Katara’s waterfront, against the backdrop of traditional dhows. A brightly-lit message inviting people back to the next edition of KIAHF next year 2022, brought the Festival to a perfect end.

At age 17 I did a modelling and gait course, at age 18 I started competing in modelling AHM | 250
AHM | 251
competitions made some contacts in Sydney and I was on my way competing and working as a promotional model. If you had to say – what three things make a great model? Professionalism Patience Personality What have been your favourite experiences modelling so far? I love being able to travel overseas so when I got the chance to compete and shoot in Egypt, Mexico and, as soon as we are allowed with Covid-19, Las Vegas is next! But, such simple things like shooting wearing roller-skates and milkshakes was extra fun! But nothing compares to shooting on exquisite Arabian Horses in sand dunes that go for miles. Are there any fashion designers that you really like to wear? How would you describe your style? My forever favourite designer/style is Wheels and Dollbaby which is a 1950s pin up style of clothing. The designer lives in Perth Western Australia and celebrities such as Kate Moss, Katy Perry, Scarlett Johansson wear the designs and they have even collaborated with burlesque icon Dita von Tesse. I don’t hold myself to just one style, I just dress the way I feel that day, whether it be sporty, girlie, little skirts and small tops or Bohemian beach goddess clothing , I love it and wear it all!

AHM | 254
What else do you do when you’re not modelling? When not modelling I have always loved singing! Currently creating demos and collaborations with fellow music lovers to go further into my hidden talent. Between modelling and Arabian horses…Tell us when you have first met an Arabian horse and how you felt about it. This shoot was actually my first time meeting Arabian horses, and it is a magical experience I will never forget, they are so beautiful and majestic in their own right, I could honestly die happy having had the pleasure of being in their presence. Do you own Arabian horses yourself? What kind of relationship do you have with horses in general? I don’t own horses personally, when growing up one of my best friends was a horse trainer so, I was extremely blessed to be able to rock up at her place/farm where she worked and go horse riding with her, then I grew up and moved to the big city and my special moments with them are now through the lovely photographer Dana Russo. Have you ever been to Arabian horse’s beauty competitions? If so, tell us which International Arabian Horses Show was/is your favourite one. No, I haven’t had the pleasure just yet! But, I would absolutely love to! Lastly, what’s something you want less of in your life? What about more of…? I want less coronavirus cases and restrictions and more of pursuing my dreams which consists of modelling overseas travelling to such beautiful places, sing to my heart’s content and meeting more breath-taking Arabian horses! Thank you so much Krystal. May all your dreams come true!

CONCLUSION:
The Abu Dhabi International Arabian Horses Championship is a jewel in the crown on Arabian Horse Magazine list of international events that takes place annually in the United Arab Emirates, therefore, it is a fantastic feeling to be able to write about those horses. Not only has the championship 2021 marked the start of the show season in the UAE, it has been a significant step on the road to local recovery from the coronavirus pandemic – sportingly, socially and economically. Holding this show is a true measure of the good things that can happen when people pull together with focus, purpose and positivity. So, we offer our sincerest thanks to our media partners from Emirates Arabian Horse Society who gave us the opportunity to cover the show as well as everyone who has been involved in the huge endeavour to deliver it, from Show Manager Mr. Mohamed Ahmed Alharbi, Show Supervisor Ms. Hamda Alkhajeh, Show Coordinator Mr. Ebrahim Basheer - and all other members of the show technical group - to the breeders, the judges, the handlers and to speakers Mr. Mohammed Abu Bakr and Ms. Ameera Al Awadi who managed the competitions with a flawless power of speech both in Arabic and English. In conclusion, we would like to thank you all those who have contributed to the success of the show.

enuine beauty, intelligence, hardiness and agility have been specific features of the pure-bred Arabian horses born and raised in the Arabian Gulf area for hundreds of years, with the Bahrain Peninsula being held as the most distinguished reservoir of the original breed.

Because of their ex-

traordinary beauty these horses were all grouped together at Haras Amiri, thus, confirming the beginning of the reign of al- Khalifa in terms of equine breeding. At the time, about twenty horses with the finest bloodlines were being bred on the Island, their legacy was for a long time maintained by the local herd of broodmares, of new born foals who systematically bore the name of their dam, whilst the stallions who were to serve the mares were chosen from the oldest bloodlines such like Kuheilah Aafas. Many scholars of the pure-bred Arabian horse are first and foremost concerned with the five primary strains: *Koheilah *Obeyah *Dhahma *Shuwaimeh *Saqlawieh. No less than twenty types of the pure-bred Arabian horse are known as being the original source of the pure breed that is still preserved in the oft-forgotten State of Bahrain, the overall herd consists of:
AHM | 286
* Kuheila’t Al-Ajooz – considered as a noble conveyor of other bloodlines. * Kuheila’t Aafas- famous for its original type * Kuheila’t Alkadiyat – mentioned in the Holy Quran * Kuheila’t Umm Zorayr - known for producing very tall and beautiful horses * al-Jellabieh- a specific bloodline bred at Admiri Arabian Stud * al-Hamdanieh- very popular for its beauty * Krush- still producing compact models * al-Kray- in the legacy of Al Khalifa Stud. * al-Mlolesh- breeding base at Amiri Arabian Stud * al-Dhahma- mentioned in the Hadiths * al-Musannah- producing very strong horses to model * al-Shuwaimeh – legendary bloodline descending from the five Koheila’t Ajooz * al-Obeyah- legendary bloodline in Arabia * al-Suwaitieh- often from central Arabia * Rabda- producing horses with excellent body.

* Hadhfah- very old bloodline present in Bahrain * al-Shawafah-al Khalifa family’s most favourite bloodline * al-Saqlawieh – legendary bloodline for its finesse * Wadhna- possessing a mighty body * al-Tuwaisah- characterized by its refined beauty * al-Ma’anaghieh – ancient bloodline that is often found in northern Arabia In the 1850s, several horses from Bahrain were introduced to Abbas Pasha I of Egypt to be bred

to a group of elite broodmares including *Jellaby and *Mlolesh bloodlines. This lot also included an extraordinary beautiful mare * El Dahmeh who was offered by Shaikh Isa bin Ali al- Khalifa - a distant ancestor of current reigning monarch - to the Khedivè. Mainly in Egypt, all these horses largely participated in the creation of an Arabian strain of its own with the highest purity of blood, whilst other countries have been quite fortunate to import breeding specimens straight from Bahrain. In
1931 Poland got a * Kuheilan Aafas foal, in 1938 two foals left for England a * Musannaan and a *Wathneh one as well as a precious *Mloleshaan stallion in 1952; in 1968, a stunning *Tuwaisaan stallion went to South Africa, thus, closing down all exports of this genetic treasure from Bahrain to foreign countries. At the time, Emir Shaikh Isa bin Salman al-Khalifa kept the ancient family tradition of maintaining the purity of these Arabian horses, while also improving their qualities. Later on, Shaikh Hamed bin Isa al-Khalifa made build the Amiri Arabian Horse Stud to have full command of the national breeding production. In 1983, the Royal Stables were moved to an isolated valley in *Rawdat’ Alghar to protect the breed in a heavenly, natural environment. During his reign, the Emir of Bahrain put a ban on all the exports for commercial purposes, limiting as much as possible the participation of his own horses in shows or competitions. I had myself the chance to come to Bahrain in 1988, a visit which led to a very fruitful collaboration within the Cannes Arabian Horse Show and the Paris Competitions organized by Agence Française du Cheval Arabe and Spodex. Without underestimating the role of international bodies in the preservation of the breed, the State of Bahrain was recognized by the WAHO (World Arabian Horse Organization) as an active member in 1976, thereafter, an agreement could be reached on the organization of the 1998 World Conference of Arab Horse Breeders at Saffriya Stables. Invited by the Crown Prince Court as a Technical Advisor together with Dr. Vet. Gebresele Araya and with all the team working on of this major event, I was able to select twenty-two mares and seven stallions, all of whom were representatives of the primary bloodlines of the so-called ‘Asil’ Arabian horse. As I did not use to handle horses, I was given specific training sessions by two handlers from the Royal Stables of Morocco, Driss and Larbi, in a peaceful environment and with a lot of respect for the horses standing at Saffriya Stables and at al-Rouhda Stables, a real treasure standing right there, in front of us.

An interesting tour allowed the delegates to visit Umm Jedda Stables owned by Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman al-Khalifa which was built in a traditional Bedouin style right in the middle of the desert, before arriving at the racetrack. I have to thank the then Crown Prince Shaikh Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa, crowned as King of Bahrain in 2002, for laying all of his trust in my hands, he gave me everything I needed, as well, I will never forget Mohammed bin Khaled al-Khalifa from Crown Prince Court with whom I was able to organize these events, the success of which went beyond any

expectations. In those days, really everyone could see up close the exceptional beauty of pure horses who appear so different from today’s specimens, the features of which have been gradually altered by professionals who do not always care about preserving the original standards of a breed that has been there for centuries. On site for the event, we remember the presence of a shy young European man who after few years became the Head of the European Arabian Horse Show. Given that it is now necessary to be competitive in the Arabian horse diaspora, the leaders in charge of the industry in Bahrain have largely opened up to endurance competitions, public races on racetracks, without underestimating a strong turnout
of imported horses with more fashionable bloodlines at international Arabian horses competitions, which have nothing to do with yesterday’s equine heritage. Although the latest events may convey us an image of the Arabian horse deeply affected by expansionist modernity, the legacy of the Oriental horses of Bahrain is still living in this beautiful country where some of those treasures are guarded in reduced herds. To visit the Kingdom of Bahrain, you have to plan your trip ahead, go to Park al-Areen, a wonderful natural reserve of endangered species of typical animals of this desert region, such like the *Oryx, the* Nubian Ibex, the *Rheem gazelle as well as the *Houbara that are often hunted by hawks without forgetting the * Dung beetle that lives in the desert, for a truly sensational discovery.
