uite as exotic as his name, meaning “What makes it different”, this young stallion is nothing short of stunning! His breeders from Al Saqran Horse Stud may have chosen this name to refer to the vibration of a free spirit, of a leader, someone who is not easily impressed by others but likes to impress, and has the ability to unlock extraordinary beauty and virtues both in the barns and in the ring. A very short head, refined muzzle, expressive eyes, and small, short tipped ears are just a few amazing characteristics of this young stallion. But to be successful, you need to have a royal pedigree that serves as a guarantee of what a horse may become in the future. Ageeb’s is a pedigree whose corners and crevices are just filled with super sires and aristocrat
dams. He is no one else than a son of the living legend Fa El Rasheem and out of CS Amay, one of the most exquisite Royal Colours’ daughters in Europe. FA El Rasheem needs no introduction to the world industry as he is just one of the most prolific reproducers of the 21st century. And his offspring are multi-awarded champions horses throughout the globe. Through FA El Rasheem, SQ Ageeb is a grandson to the US breeding phenomenon Fa El Shawan (2005), therefore, a great-grandson to the legendary sire Marwan Al Shaqab (2000)(Gazal Al Shaqab x Little Liza Fame out of Katahza). His dam, CS Amay (2008) (Royal Colours x CS Opportunity) gifted

Jan had been breeding Welsh section A ponies since 1966 and to move up to a bigger version was not so difficult. In 1978 he bought a small Polish/Crabbet cross mare named Allegria born in 1974 bred by a small Dutch breeder. Allegria was by Gon (Negativ x Gomorra) and out of Deglet Noer (Goldbey x Merrymount Emma). When Jan bought this mare he wanted to be sure she stayed within the large pony size so she measured only 144 cm. At the time she was in foal to Ibn Argos (by Argos) and Allegria produced a lovely filly foal which the family named Flaxman’s El Myrrah in 1979. Both mares lived their entire lives at Flaxman Arabians. Allegria lived up to 31 years old and El Myrrah 33 years. They gave them numerous foals by different sires. After buying this little mare Jan was on the lookout for some other bloodlines besides Polish and Crabbet and fell in love with Egyptian bloodlines. A visit led him to Stoeterij Arabica in Vlimmeren, Belgium, owned by Mr Peeters at the time. There he saw the liver chestnut stallion Aber (by Anter) and he fell in love with him. He bought two fillies from Mr Peeters, which were Naxaba out of the Crabbet

For many years in Europe, we have been very used to following so-called breeding competitions at different levels for which the horses get trained to compete with their model in step and trotting, classic mounted events are sometimes on the program, but are not always viewed by a large audience, in order to overcome this deficiency, endurance has assumed a significant role in making generous horses under saddle so special. Not so long ago, equestrian enthusiasts very involved in equestrian sports, mainly polo, dreamed of an equestrian competition based on the principle of a relay race of the Paris Dakar kind, taking place somewhere in the country of origin of the Arabian horse or his derivatives, these were events providing a novelty by uncovering desert landscapes, mixing dunes and sands in different colours depending on the time of day. Teams should be composed of at least five riders with good riding skills with a team leader, horses got generally provided by local authorities, and the groups got united in the hope of victory after five days of distances varying from 30 to 40 kilometres, spread over two hundred kilometres of riding or running next to their horse, not having to gallop on rocky terrain, with an obligation to cross the finish line together.
138 >
Each rider must ensure the safety of their horse; veterinarians controled the physical condition of the horse at each stop with a rest time of 15 minutes, the heart rate at 64-minute pulses, and the absence of a gearbox to

continue on the adventure according to the same rules of usual endurance contests. Through these orientation and regularity races, which do not ignore some penalties concerning the general regulations, each competition tests the riders’ abilities in an unfamiliar environment that must not be soiled. And everyone on the team must stay the team spirit by supporting the rest of his teammates in the vast desert, sometimes meeting bedouins still living there. Therefore, this was indeed an international event, whose first edition took place in 2014 in the Sultanate of Oman, followeing Kingdom of Morocco in 2018, India in 2019, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in 2021, and Tunisia in November 2022. In the present day, when Arabian horses get overproduced across the globe, this is a great creation that is only available to those riders who cannot compete in official endurance competitions, those will undoubtedly have time for a new sport occupation that will quickly gain popularity, even in Europe, breeders in overproduction will find a viable commercial outlet. Although the financial costs should not be hidden for every participant who cannot be all, the strong points of the event include the hospitality at each exceptional stop, the care for the participants in the ephemeral villages, and of course the photo contest program, which reflects the spirit of this amazing event.

rna Goudbeek has made a name for herself as one of the best loved nature artists of this time, influenced by her love for the natural world. This Dutch-native artist has developed an extremely captivating style that enables her to capture “the soul of the Arabian horse”. Her oil paintings are both evocative and energetic, showing a side of the Arabian Horse that few of us have seen... Welcome to the AHM team, Erna! Could you please share with our readers some background information about you and your family? I was born on the 26th. of April 1966. I grew up with my mum, dad and two younger brothers in Almelo, a town in the East of Holland. We had a happy childhood and were very fortunate to have parents that

ensured we learned about nature. We used to cycle and walk in nature, visiting nature reserves to see animals in their natural habitat. My mum and dad certainly have played a role in my creativity. Unfortunately, my dad passed away in October 2014, but I feel so blessed that he was still with us to see some of my most significant achievements in my painting career. I feel blessed with the support and encouragement that I always have had from my parents. My mother continues to be very proud of me, and I am sure my dad is watching over me. He told me to keep painting and I will certainly do that! Would you be so kind as to explain how you became an artist? What kind of training did you receive and where? My name is Sufian Taha. I am married to a beautiful, intelligent, and horse lover, Rania Taha. Together, we have four children, one girl, and three boys. I studied Economics at the City University of New York. I have been a journalist working for the Washington Post and the Guardian newspaper for the past 20 years covering the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. I am an O.P.C. Award winner in journalism. AHM | 45
When did you start getting interested in the pure-bred Arabian horse? Arabian horses have been part of my family since I was a
kid. As a 10 years old kid, I used to wake up on a Friday morning just to watch those two beautiful fillies belonging to my uncle trotting up the hill dancing with elegance and pride. I remember their silky tails melting with the sunlight, their trotting with pride and elegance, something magical. I remember it as if it is happening now. Since then, I have been under the spell of their beauty. At what age have you become a judge? What specific preparation did you get? In order to be good at something you must practice it, life will not give it to you on a silver plate. To become an ECAHO judge was not an easy thing, and it can’t be taken for granted. There were a lot of things to learn and a lot of practice to do. I did seven times probation judging. In one of those probational judging, I met t w o experienced judges w h o help ed AHM | 46
me to get through with their experience and knowledge, namely Sylvie Eberhardt and Doug Dahmen. Sylvie was always there for me when I needed some help or a piece of advice, and she always put me on the right track. For that, I am humbled to say thank you, dear Sylvie. I took my 1st exam in Brussels in 2013. It was not an easy one, but I did pass it the first t i m e . My 2nd exam, I took in Poland at Janow Podlaski Stud Farm. It was also a very tough exam both in theory and practice, but thank God I passed because I didn’t take things for granted. I studied really hard... Before the 2nd exam, I also needed to do three international probation with experienced ECAHO judges to become an ECAHO judge. In 2015, I eventually became an ECAHO judge! Nothing comes easy, but hard work pays you off in the end! After 19 years of judging experience, and 7 years of being an ECAHO judge, I find out that the more I learn, the less I know about the art of judging. It is a never-ending story! What are, in your opinion, the strengths
of the Arabian breed? How do you tackle the concepts of ‘beauty’ and ‘functional correctness’? The Arabian breed has always been protected by deities always watching over the Drinkers of the Wind. When the Middle East was smothered by wars and revolutions, the Arabian horse got harboured by European and worthy American breeders who took the breed to the ultimate level. And when the Middle East was ready to harbour this magnificent creature, the Arabian horse came back to its original inhabitants. Therefore, the bond and the cooperation between Europe and the Mid-
dle East is very important and essential for the preservation of the breed, make no mistake about it! As long as this cooperation is working out, I don’t need to worry about the future of the breed. The beauty of an Arabian horse must be taken as one piece, it can’t be altered or changed, either you take it as a whole or leave it as a whole. We as judges have the duty to preserve the breed by encouraging the desirable characters within the breed and correcting the undesirable ones. The Arabian horse has to be beautiful and functional at the same time, we can’t exclude one on the account of the other, AHM | 47
AHM | 48
this is what makes the Arabian horse so exquisite and precious. Which horse or horses have you judged that have left the strongest impression on you? Why? One of the horses I have judged, and I will never forget is Naseem al Rashidiah, a stallion that displays enchanting beauty and functionality, a masterpiece that illustrates the future of the breed from my own perspective. One of the horses I have judged, and I will never forget is Naseem al Rashidiah, a stallion that displays enchanting beauty and functionality, a masterpiece that illustrates the future of the breed from my own perspective. What do you feel has been your most recent rewarding show as a judge? The most rewarding show that I have judged recently is the Katara Arabian Peninsula Straight Egyptian Show, in Doha, Qatar. As a straight Egyptian breeder, I was enchanted by the beauty of the most exquisite Straight Egyptian horses in the world. It was a dream come true to see all those outstanding, beautiful horses before your eyes in one show! What particular skills are necessary to become an accountable judge in front of the public? Do the most meritorious horses in terms of the breed’s standards win at shows today? A great judge needs to have an eye that appreciates and spots beauty immediately when he/she sees it. To sense and feel quality immediately. And believe me, it is not an easy thing! You must have in you what distinguishes a great judge from other judges. It is very few who can appreciate classical music. It is very few who can enjoy and understand the Painting of Picasso. And also it is very few who can look deep and appreciate the Arabian beauty and enchantment. When a
jud g e poses this power and is gifted with this talent, the most meritorious horses win.
always
How has the global health crisis affected the Arabian horse industry? Has it affected your job? The past two years were awful years for the Arabian horse industry due to the pandemic (Covid-19). Many shows were cancelled, and it affected me as a judge and a show organizer. We had to cancel our shows in Palestine, and I was not able to attend m a n y shows I was invited to due to the cloAHM | 49
sures of the airport and travelling restrictions. I hope the whole world will get over it and life will go back to normal again. Sufian, are you also a breeder? Yes, I am. I had my first Arabians in 1996 AHM | 50
and ever since I have been breeding Arabians and Straight Egyptians under the name of Al Okab Farm. I did my first judging course in Egypt in 2003, and I had the honour to judge the very first Palestinian National the same year. I remember there were only around fifty horses, but everyone was happy to have the first show in Palestine. In 2023 and 2025, the World Arabian Horse Championship will be held in Qatar. How do you feel about this? I think it is a good thing to have the Word Championship rotated between countries members of
the Ecaho. I believe a country like Qatar has the ability and the experience to host such an important event. However, I also believe it should not be limited to one country, but any Ecaho member country that has the power and the strength to host such a significant event should not be excluded from hosting this prestigious event. I also believe that ECAHO should have the upper hand as far as the selection of judges and officials to maintain transparency, accountability, fairness to the event.
your career? How do you picture your future, Sufian? As a judge, I had a very wonderful time judging Arabian horses all over the world. I really would like to become an ECAHO instructor. Maybe, I can add something or learn something for the sake of the breed. The more I know about Arabian horses, the more I want to learn and go deeper into the soul of these magnificent creatures… Thank you very much for granting me this opportunity to express myself and share my experience with you!
What else would you like to accomplish at this stage of
Thank you very much, Mr Sufian. I really enjoyed the interview. We wish you all the best in your future judging!

DUBAI INTERNATIONAL HORSE FAIR The Fair takes place in World Trade Center Dubai from 17 to 19th March 2022 as a major framework of the Dubai International Arabian Horse Championship, with the next edition scheduled for March 2023. DIHF has been the equestrian industry’s pivotal gathering ground for decades, and the only and most established trade show in the region connecting a diverse array of equestrian suppliers with the region’s avid enthusiasts, owners, breeders, stables and clubs. THE WORLD ART DUBAI Together with the Fair, the World Art Dubai AHM | 60
(WAD) exhibition attracts 300 artists representing diverse artistic mediums and styles. The artists exhibit more than 4,000 works of art from more than 50 countries. We have a wide range of artworks at the WAD with prices ranging from $100 upwards - there is something for everyone! We enjoy speaking with and listening to many interesting artists about what drives and challenges them. Seeing and learning about so many talented artists during the championship is truly inspiring!
CONCLUSION We will keep great memories of the 2022 Dubai International Championship (DIAHC) not only for the magnificent Arabian horses, but also for catching up with friends and making new acquaintances. It has been great to get a deeper sense of Dubai’s culture and
Show history (the Museum of the Future is incredible, as it is taken in the Expo). While the tributes at the Ukrainian Pavillion is really moving. We have also visited the cultural village at the DIAC, which showcases aspects of the Emirati heritage, such as pearl diving, food preparation, and pottery making. It has been a delight to spend time with friends and to try the delicious Middle Eastern food. It was a pleasure to eat fish at the Gala dinner prepared by local chefs at the restaurant and previously at the Souk Al Bahar restaurant, both of which overlook beautiful water. We are beyond grateful to the High Organizing Committee composed of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed Al Maktoum,
Deputy Ruler of Dubai, to DIAHC Board, in particular, General Manager Mr. Qusai Obaidalla and Mr. Adel Saeed Al Falasi. Thank you for inviting us at such wonderful equestrian event where the quality of the horses is always beyond any expectations. Thanks to all the judges who have been able to attend the show. They had some very long days and then demanding finals, but they know they would all do it again. Special thank you to the owners, trainers, and handlers who took the effort to present their horses to such a high level. To conclude, heartfelt thank you to the many sponsors, volunteers, ring stewards, and all the hard-working helpers and behind-the-scenes officials. We are all looking forward to the 2023 DIAHC edition!

uite as exotic as his name, meaning “What makes it different”, this young stallion is nothing short of stunning!

SQ Ageeb with the prized straight Egyptian blood of Royal Colours, True Colours and Thee Desperado. His grand-dam CS Opportunity (2004) (Laman HVP x CS Nairobi out of PH Obsession) brings in additional straight Egyptian blood, but also precious Polish, Russian and Crabbet bloodlines that are easy to detect when looking further back at his ancestors. SQ Ageeb’s pedigree possesses countless
layers of beauty, type, and quality bestowed upon him by every member of this illustrious lineage. As a Yearling, SQ Ageeb was named Bronze Champion Yearling Colt at the very strong B Int. Show in Bergamo in 2018. His first babies born in 2021 just made a great impact on European breeding and there have come more from wonderful mares this year. Just to mention a few: the

In 2022, Ageeb has sired about 20 exceptional foals already, all born and bred in AHM | 90
SQ Ageeb is blossoming, heightening in quality with each passing year and this is no hidden truth to many illustrious and cunny international breeders. As a matter
of fact, he is currently on lease in Mallorca (Antonia Bautista & Sheikah Fatima of Al Shiraa Stables) who feel blessed to have such a great opportunity for their breeding program. At the same time, his new owners, SQ Ageeb Partnership, will be rewarded not only by him but by all the future generations that the handsome SQ Ageeb will certainly leave within the Arabian horse community around the world!

laxman Arabians was founded in 1978 by the late Jan van Nes who bought a larger pony for his daughter Helen. He bought two fillies from Mr Peeters, which were Naxaba out of the Crabbet
mare Naxindos and Umbra out of the Polish mare Mazurka. Both fillies Egyptian related but a good step in the right direction for him. These fillies were born in 1978 and were yearlings at the time.

Over 100 SE horses were flown into Amsterdam and became part of the breeding program of Flaxman and many other farms in Europe and the Middle east. The van Nes family was told that the local government was changing the landscaping around the current farm and which led to the fact that there was no more land left for the farm to have their animals graze on. The search began for a new facility because there were over 60 animals on the farm. Not only Arabs but also a lot of miniature Shetland ponies which Helen bred for many many years. Helen met Kay

Text by: William Richardot de Choisey & Patrick Boudehen Photos by: Bucephal Organization / Bricot – B-Org Translation by: Sonia Smaldone For many years in Europe, we have been very used to following so-called breeding competitions at different levels for which the horses get trained to compete with their model in step and trotting, classic mounted events are sometimes on the program, but are not always viewed by a large audience, in order to overcome this deficiency, endurance has assumed a significant role in making generous horses under saddle so special. Each rider must ensure the safety of their horse; veterinarians controled the physical condition of the horse at each stop with a rest time of 15 minutes, the heart rate at 64-minute pulses, and the absence of a gearbox to AHM | 106
continue on the adventure according to the same rules of usual endurance contests.

Hello Angelo! Hello Federica! Welcome to Arabian Horse Magazine, and thank you so much for accepting our invitation and giving us some of your time! Please introduce yourself to our community.
Angelo: Hi everyone, I’m Angelo. I am 27 years old. I was born and raised with Arabian horses around due to the passion handed AHM | 126
down to me by my parents for these beautiful animals. For about ten years, I have also started my private breeding program with my partner, with whom I founded Al Jawharah Horse Stud. Federica: Hi, I’m Federica! I am 25 years old. I approached the world of horses from an early age. Unlike Angelo, I grew up in the world of jumping, a discipline I practised until I met Angelo. This is when I came across Arabian horses for the first time. Gosh! It was love at first sight. The passion for riding horses still burns in our heart though. Some of our show horses are also trained under saddle as a matter of fact. Our Al Jawharah Horse Stud, recognizable with the affix JWH, is producing subjects very targeted to the kind of characteristics we want to pass onto our mares’ foals. Qualities like type, movement, and body with a beautiful dished head are crucial to us.
Mizar di Loris ( Piruet X Emathenae)

more we got to know each other, the more we realized we got made for each other.
Angelo, what struck you most about Federica? Federica, same question for you.
Ajmer Moniscione (Aj Mardan x Agianna Moniscione) Top Five Menton 2019
When and where did you first meet?
We met on 28th December 2014 through a friend we have in common. We decided to spend a week together in Bormio on the occasion of the New Year. The AHM | 128
Angelo: What struck me most about Federica, besides her beauty, was her determination. She always gets what she wants. Sharing my passions and ideas has also played a pivotal role. For sure. Federica: I was very impressed by Angelo’s kindness and sensitivity. His supporting my ideas and decisions is so amazing.
In your opinion, what are the essential ingredients for a good life as a couple? Honesty, trust and have fun together!
Angelo, tell us about your first steps in the Arabian Horse industry. When and why did you decide to pursue a career as a trainer/handler in this sector?
Until I met Angelo. Then in 2015, I met these magnificent specimens. I will never separate myself from them. I have decided to combine
As I said earlier, I was born among horses. When my parents started breeding this wonderful breed, I got enchanted by its charisma and elegance. Since I was only a kid, I realized they would be my forever life companions. Together with Federica, obviously! (Giggles) In addition to this, I share this passion with my brother Andrea Boscarino. We have set up the BM Arabian Show Training together. I also share much of my time and ideas with him.
Federica, what do you do in life? Are you a horsewoman too? What kind of relationship do you have with horses? I will graduate in dentistry in a year. So horses are not, and will not be, my job but my greatest passion for sure! I approached very young horses at the age of about 5/6 years. I spent the following years practising the discipline of jumping, therefore a completely different environment and horses.
Naja El Mut (Monera Mutschawip x Naomi) what I am most passionate about in the horse world, English riding and Arabians. I think Arabian horses can express their charm either free or mounted.

Princess Irina Magnum (LC Prince Magnum x Irina out of Amiri)
I do another job, but my spare time is dedicated to horses and show training. It impacts the relationship because there is little time to go on vacation together. But fortunately, sharing this passion with Federica, our holidays are with our horses most of the time. So what can I say? It’s me, Federica and the horses!
JWH Najm (Ajman Moniscione x JWH Fedora by Zt Magnofantasy)
Angelo, how much does your work and your commitments with Arabian horses affect your relationship? AHM | 130
Federica, is there a horse you are particularly fond of? Who is it?
The horse that gives me new emotions day after day is the first Arabian mare we have taken together, Mizar Di Loris (Piruet X Emanthenae). From the first time I met her gaze
seven years ago, I realized that she was the mare of my life. I think that each of us has a particular horse in our heart, which for million reasons difficult to explain by words fills our hearts and minds. Mizar is an exquisite Polish Arabian mare with whom I have matured a feeling that is hard to explain by words and replicate with other mares. I get emotional just talking about it!
Angelo, tell us a little about your recent successes in the show ring as a handler. What are your future goals in this sector? I am a breeder. As such, I want to find new lines for my breeding program. However, keep characteristics of the old lines, which, in my opinion, cannot disappear. Let us remember that the future is beautiful if we respect the past. As for the show ring, all my horses are followed and trained by my brother at BM Show Training. Andrea can understand what the horses need and, consequently, the horses, feeling the respect he feels for them, give their best to his requests.
Guys, how and where do you see each other in ten years? Are you going to have your own family? If so, will you educate your children to love horses?
In ten years, we imagine ourselves with a son/daughter that we will approach the horse world from day one. Growing up with horses and caring for them educates children to have respect, both towards all kinds of animals and towards people. The whole idea of managing the horses, feeding them, putting them in the paddock, and all the matters behind their management teach children to take on their responsibilities. I also dream of having a breeding herd full of increasingly rare subjects.

Finally, would you like to say something to our readers?
Love your horses because they, more than anyone, can reciprocate all the love and respect if you give it to them. Arabian horses are sensitive animals and so good at listening and reciprocating.
Thank you so much, guys. We wish you all the best. And good luck at the shows! Mizar di Loris with her sister Nieva di Loris; both by the King Piruet

INTERVIEWED BY SONIA SMALDONE
E
rna Goudbeek has made a name for herself as one of the best loved nature artists of this time, influenced by her love for the natural world.
One of my first loves as a child was drawing AHM | 183
with a pencil. I remember that I spent a lot of time drawing, animals mostly, but it was not till later in my life in 1999, while I was still working at the NATO Base in Holland, that I pursued this love of drawing animals by starting to work with pastels. By 2000, I decided to broaden my skills by joining a group of watercolour painters, I worked with this medium for another two years. In that same year, I met my partner Brian, who is now my husband, at the NATO Base. He loved my pastel work and saw real potential AHM | 184
in what I could achieve. He supported me from the beginning of my career in art and still supports me intensely today. For that, I will be forever grateful! So in 2002, I made two major decisions in my life; I stopped working at the NATO Base and moved with Brian to Neugnadenfeld, a lovely small village in Germany and I learned to work with oils. I was part of a painters group in Holland, the Peinturisten. This is when I feel that my love and passion for my work really began!
What came first, the horses or the art? Why did you first become interested in Arabian horses as an artistic subject? My love for horses came first, especially when I saw these beauties at my uncle’s farm. As a kid, I tried to draw them, so the interest was already there at a young age. When I joined the Peinturisten in 2002, I started with all sorts of subjects to learn how to work with oils. After a few years, I settled into painting birds
of prey and Arabian horses. The first major Arabian horse I painted was called ‘the Arabian Beauty’. My first visit to the Middle East was to Abu Dhabi, Al Ain (UAE) in 2011, where I was invited to the International Festival of Falconry, representing Holland with two oil paintings as a finalist in the Art competition. When I was there, I also saw some Arabian horses and I fell even more in love with their raw beauty. After returning home, I then AHM | 185
decided to concentrate more of my time on painting Arabian horses alongside my birds of prey. That was the beginning of many more to come! Where and when did you first encounter an Arabian horse? Who was he/she? Share some details with us… As I previously mentioned, I first became involved and interested in horses when I saw the beautiful horses of my uncle Henk, who bred horses at his farm in Holland. He also had, as I recall, one or two Arabians of which I have no history. I remember my uncle sometimes gave me his old horse magazines, so I could draw examples from them. I really enjoyed that time! How do you capture the horses’ personalities in your paintings? I love all horse breeds, but what I find most fascinating about Arabian horses is their raw beauty, words are not enough to describe what I feel when I am busy painting an
AHM | 186
Arabian horse! There is something special about the Arabian; their beauty and grace are overwhelming, the eyes… large and beautiful, the long neck and high tail carriage. I feel so much energy when I paint such a unique horse and I bring that same energy back into my work. An Arabian horse promotes strength, intelligence, nobility, elegance and of course, its glorious ‘floating trot’. Which artists have influenced you the most? As I have grown as an artist, I still feel heavily influenced by my teacher Mr Guust van den Noort. While working with other painters in this group, I studied with my teacher intensely. When he was young, he in turn studied with a Master of the School of The Hague. He gave me a great gift; the confidence to paint! He always told me that I was a natural talent. This in turn gave me the will to develop my own technique. Alas, I am a perfectionist, I am never fully satisfied with a painting. I
strive with each piece to get better; to become the best artist I can be. Unfortunately, my teacher passed away in 2012, when I need it, I think of his last words to me “…I believe in you and you will get there, just keep painting with your heart…”. I always have been inspired by work from the Dutch Old Masters of the Golden Age, one especially, his work always stood out the way he worked with darkness and light, that is of course Rembrandt, the Master in working in such a realistic way! I also admire the impressionistic oil paintings of the painters of the Hague school, a group of artists who lived and worked in The Hague between 1860 and 1890. These painters generally made use of relatively sombre colours, which is why the Hague School is sometimes called the Gray School. Do you have any secret rituals to help you get in the zone for your art? Is there a particular place that inspires you? I can’t say I have any secret or crazy rituals, but there is certainly a particular place that inspires me… Our beautiful home is in a small German village, just over the border from Holland. In this little village where we live, surrounded by nature and wildlife, I find the inspiration I need to create my oil paintings. When I’m not travelling to events, exhibitions or fairs, (incidentally where I find a great deal of my inspiration), you can find me in my studio, where I can work peacefully. I am most at peace while listening to beautiful music or just the sounds of nature around me. Here, I feel like I’ve gone back in time yet finally have come home and settled down. What effect does the Internet have on art? Does it affect yours? If so, how? Social media is an exceptionally powerful marketing tool for me. I embrace both Instagram and Facebook where I can connect with potential buyers, fans and fellow artists. People can connect directly with me and talk about my work.
AHM | 187
I have had a lot of word of mouth commission work through the internet, when someone has had an order done, they highly recommend me to others. I also think having a website is very important to building my credibility as a professional artist. It gives people information about when and where the next exhibitions are going to be, my biography, interviews, etc. Social media gives me a way to share my art with the world! Do you have a favourite piece or collection? It is very difficult to choose an individual painting, I always put my heart and soul into every painting that I create… they all have something special in them. I am a perfectionist, after every painting that I finished, I always feel that I could do better…
so…. if I have to choose my favourite/best painting… then that will be my next one! When did you last exhibit? Have you heard that some of your works were auctioned at the 2022 Katara International Festival in Qatar during the Al Aseel Art Auction? I last exhibited in 2018 for the 2nd. time at the Mara’ee in Bahrain and I was preparing to again return to Bahrain to exhibit in early 2020, but because of the global pandemic, everything was put on hold. Thankfully things are getting back to normal and I am looking forward to my next exhibition. Regarding my work which has been AHM | 188
auctioned, I only found out from you, which was a nice surprise for me. I found a video from the auction, which was really nice to watch and it’s placed on my website. What is the best way for potential clients to reach you? Do you typically offer a package? The best way for potential clients to reach me is through my website… www.ernagoudbeek.com, using a contact form. I also can be contacted via Instagram, Facebook or my e-mail: ernagoudbeek@ hotmail.com I endeavour to respond within 24 hours to any inquiry. Regarding a package, I try to work to set
prices for different sizes of panels that I work on. But at the end of the day, there are so many variables involved when I price my work. Every commission is different, but I work with the client to deliver what they require. Where do you see yourself in the next five years? What are your hopes and dreams for the future? Some of my successes have led me to travel and exhibit in places I never thought I would ever go to. Over the next five years, my dream and goal are to exhibit my work even further and further around the

The large, lush green polo fields of Scottsdale’s Westworld was a splendid setting for the magnificent horses presented at this year’s Arabian Horse Breeders’ World Cup. Once again horses from around the world competed for the honor of this show’s titles as well as the spectacular awards, which are second to none with their beauty and artistry. As with every show held outdoors, weather is always a major concern. Thankfully, mother nature blessed us and we all enjoyed the incredible energy of the brilliant Arizona sunshine, which always lifts the spirits and creates a magical atmosphere. You could see and feel the joy of the horses as they entered the lush green show ring where they trotted and pranced before the cheering crowds and the panel of esteemed international judges. The quality of the horses at this year’s show did not disappoint - they were thrilling! Throughout the four days of the show, there was an undeniable festive party mood. The Breeders’ World Cup is so much more than just a competition, it is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year created by Arabian horse breeders for breeders and everyone is welcome. Each day everyone gathered to celebrate the beauty of the Arabian horse with old friends and new and to have a wonderful time. Following each day’s competition, there was a sumptuous party hosted by a local farm, which allowed conversation about our favorite subject and to see even more fantastic horses and breeding programs. The Breeders’ World Cup remains a favorite American event, not only for the horses themselves, but also for the fun atmosphere of the show created by the camaraderie of the breeders and the support they give each other. It’s like a family reunion - a gathering for the family of Arabian horses lovers where everyone is welcome. Each year, as stallions do they duty, mares are bred, and new foals are born, our lives become intertwined and our family expands. There are no borders, no limits to this family or to the beauty of the Arabian horse. On the following pages are some of the winners and champions of this year’s show. We congratulate all who participated and thank you for your support. For complete show results, judges’ cards and more, please visit us at www.arabianbreedersworldcup.com We hope you will join us next year for the 2023 Arabian Breeders’ World Cup. Nagdia (01.11.1959-1988) was generated by Zahia (01.10.1949) (Sid Abouhom x Samha [1931] by Baiyad x Bint Samiha) and the stallion Nazeer (09.08.1934-07.06.1960) (Mansour x Bint Samiha [1925] by Kazmeen x Samiha). Her sire and granddam Samha were maternal brothers. Originally bred by the Egyptian Agricultural Organization (EAO), Cairo, Egypt, Nagdia was a pure Egyptian mare from the Hadba Enzahiya family. Her birth occurred in 1959, a significant year for Egyptian breeding, given the retirement of General Pettko von Szandtner due to health problems and the promotion of Dr Mohamed El Marsafi to Director of El Zahraa Arabian Stud Farm. The mare was the AHM | 222
last of the three living daughters by Nazeer to be found in Egypt. Another two were Ansata Bint Nazeer (Fulla) (27.01.1960) (Nazeer x El Bataa) and Binte El Bataa (Bint El Bataa) (30.08.1958) (Nazeer x El Bataa), both exported to the USA. The foremother of Nagdia’s dam line was Bint Hadba El Saghira, a chestnut mare born in 1912 at Kubba Stables of the Khedivé Abbas Pasha Hilmi II. She was sired by El Halabi (Saklawi I x Halabia) and her dam was Hadba (1894) (Saklawi I x Venus). On February 6, 1914, the Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) purchased Bint Hadba El Saghira. In 1931, the mare died. Nagdia’s female branch was descended from Samiha (04.10.1918-1927) (Sam-
han x Bint Hadba El Saghira), a bay mare, dam of Bint Samiha (13.07.1925) by Kazmeen (Kasmeyn) (1916) (Sotamm x Kasima), a Kuhaylan Jellabi stallion purchased by R.A.S. at Lady Judith Crabbet Park, England. Interestingly, Nagdia’s maternal grand-dam Samha (30.06.1931-1942) was also a pure Egyptian from the Hadba Enzahiya family. Samha was really the daughter of Baiyad (23.01.1918-1937) (Mabrouk Manial x Bint Gamila). Bint Gamila was also a grey mare born on November 4, 1911, in Kubba Stables of the Khedivè Abbas Pasha Hilmi II, by the stallion Ibn Nadra (El Sennari [1891] x Nadra), and out of the mare Gamila (El Sennari [1891] x Hadba 1894), the maternal sister of Bint Hadba El Saghira. The Hadba Enzahiya mare Bint Gamila got acquired from R.A.S. in 1914 and died in 1924. During that time, there were also some private studs in addition to the Egyptian StateStud of El Zahraa, among which was AlBadeia Stud Farm. The first stud farm was founded by Mr Ahmed Marei, who, in 1935, bought two mares from R.A.S. to begin selection. These were the Koheila Rodania mare, Bint Bint Bint Riyala (12.06.1933) (Ibn Rabdan x Bint Bint Riyala by Gamil Manial x Bint Riyala) and the Hadba Enzahiya mare, Bint Magboura (31.01.1932) (Ibn Rabdan x Magboura by Gamil Manial x Bint Hadba El Saghira). Mr Ahmed’s eldest son, Dr Hassan Marei, purchased the chestnut mare Samia (17.02.1938) (Zeidan x El Samraa) in 1942 from the Royal Inshass Stud of King Farouk ibn Fuad. Following World War II, AlBadeia Stud Farm renewed its genetic base by purchasing horses from
R.A.S., the Royal Inshass Stud, and the Tahawi Bedouin tribe. In 1945, Mr Ahmed’s other son, Dr Sayed Marei, acquired AlBadeia Stud Farm, and he moved it to a strategic location near the Pyramids of Giza in 1951. In the following year, a military coup took place, known in history as the Egyptian Revolution, which overthrew the monarchy and established the Republic, putting the Egyptian Arabian horse breeding at risk. Fortunately, Dr Sayed Marei became Minister of Agriculture, and he defended E.A.O.’s breeding program until he convinced President Nasser of the importance of Egypt preserv02 ing and developing Arabian horse breeding. In the 1960s, AlBadeia Stud Farm continued to grow under Dr Sayed Marei, and more horses were introduced, including Nagdia (01.11.1959) and her dam Zahia (01.10.1949). After the passing of Dr Sayed Marei in 1993, AlBadeia Stud Farm was managed by Mr Hassan and Dr Nasr Marei, until Dr Nasr died in Munich on 17 October 2017 from heart failure. The splendid Nagdia inherited her genuine Arabian type from her sire Nazeer, as well as the excellent physical characteristics and movement from her maternal grand sire Sid Abouhom (02.03.1936-1963) (El Deree x Layla). She was a well-built mare with an impressive belly that was well fused to a powerful chest, and she showed a refined type. Like her sire, Nagdia’s neck was long and of pleasant appearance, slightly arched, expressing grace and elegance. Her withers were prominent and she had powerful shoulders. She had excellent limbs that allowed her to move well. Nagdia had a beautiful face with a AHM | 223

large jawline and prominent forehead bone. Her bright eyes were large and dark, set low on a large forehead with a short head. These characteristics were passed down to all of her offspring. Although she was a mare, Nagdia had quite small shaped ears, and her nose widened quite a bit with the passage of air. Nagdia was certainly the symbol of AlBadeia’s new horse selection of that period. She produced 10 foals during her breeding career, 7 fillies and 3 colts. A lot of great stallions got crossed with her, including Ramses Fayek (Fayek) (02.02.1958) (Nazeer x Faysa II), Waseem (10.03.1958) (Nazeer x Malaka), and Nazeer’s grandson, Kayed (05.02.1966) (Morafic x Kaydahom), as well as Akhtal (05.03.1968) (Amrulla x Hagir). Only two mares from Nagdia remained in Egypt, the rest were sold to the United States, where they raised great families. The Bay Garat AlBadeia (18.08.1979) by Asil AlBadeia, purchased in 1980 by Patricia M. Burgess and Mr John L. Burgess, Galleywinter Farm, Waco, Texas; Negm AlBadeia (03.07.1978) by Kayed, and Sawra (07.23.1972) by Waseem, both sold to Mrs Ann and Mr Rick Heber, Rancha-
ra Arabians, Merrimac, Wisconsin. The first was bought in 1979 and the second in 1973. Moreover, the chestnut stallion Nagdi (09.10.1976) by Akhtal, the grey mare Shagaret El Dorr (12.09.1975) by Kayed, the grey stallion El Shady (03.11.1974) by Kayed, the grey 04 mare Baraka (16.11.1973) by Kayed, were all purchased by Mrs Jeanne Jacques and Mr Donald R. Ford of Lancer Arabians, when they were still in Brighton, Michigan. The first two were purchased in 1977, and the second two ones in 1976. Among Nagdia’s daughters exported to the U.S.A., Malekat El Gamal (25.12.1968) by Waseem was undoubtedly the most famous, bought in 1974 by Mrs Barbara A. and Mr Douglas W. Griffith of Im05 perial Egyptian Stud, Parkton, Maryland. At AlBadeia Stud Farm, Malekat El Gamal produced two stallions before leaving for the U.S.A.: Tamir (21.03.1973) by Hafez (Hafiz) (09.02.1969) (Ibn Hafiza x Ibtsam), which was sold to Spain in 1979. The second was the legendary and great stallion Amir AlBadeia (02.02.1974) by Kayed, who sired exceptional horses such as Farid AlBadeia (02.01.1984-1909.2010), out of Farida (14.04.1967) (Fayek x Nagdia), who played a major AHM | 225
was compact and could be divided into three equal parts: from the tip of the chest to the withers, from the withers to the hips, and from the hips to the buttocks. Her considerable body mass gave her a masculine look. She had a broad chest and deep hindquarters, with well developed muscles. Even though she displayed a lot of power, Malekat El Gamal was very beautiful in the details of her type, like her sweets and her big, black eyes that captured your heart. She was a calm, well-balanced, and loving mare with a mild temperament.

role in developing The Mareis’s breeding program. During the late 1980s, Amir AlBadeia, after having made considerable production in Egypt, got sold by AlBadeia Stud Farm to Sheikh Abdul Aziz Bin Khaled Al-Thani, Doha, Qatar, the first owner of Al Rayyan Farm, when it was one of the best farms in the world. Because Waseem was Nagdia’s paternal brother, Malekat El Gamal had 50% of Nazeer’s blood. Even though she had a high percentage of the Hadba Enzahiyah family, the morphology of this mare looked just like a classic Kuhaylah, blood which came from the female bloodlines of Waseem (10.03.1958), a son of the Kuhayla Rodaniyah mare, Malaka (17.02.1941) (Kheir x Bint Bint Riyala). Malekat El Gamal was a classic mare in type and looked like one of those raised in Bedouin tents. Her body

Stud, she got bred with several stallions like Ansata Imperial (18.03.1976) (Ansata Ibn Sudan x Ansata Delilah), Hossny (1966) (Ansata Ibn Halima x Sanaaa), Ibn Safinaz (10.03.1980- 03.09. 2008) (Seef x Safinaz), Moniet El Nafis (1976) (Ibn Moniet El Nefous x Hoyeda), Orashan (28.04.1983 02.11.2010 (Mesaoud x Ora). In addition, two sons by Morafic (19.03.1956-18.03.1974) (Nazeer x Mabrouka): Amaal (19.01.1968-18.12.1987) (Morafic x Bint Maisa El Saghira) and Ibn Morafic (23.04.1973-27.08.1997) (Morafic x Kahramana). These crossings produced the following mares: Imperial Al Amali (1976) by Amaal; Imperial Aj Malika (1978) by Ibn Morafic; Imperial Nadirah (1980) by Moniet El Nafis; and Moniet El Nafis’

other two daughters, namely, Imperial Nafilah (1982) and Imperial Namunifa (1984-01.06.1993), who got exported to Israel in 1992. Last but not least, Imperial Saahebah (1989) by Ibn Safinaz. Furthermore, I would like to remember the following sons: Imperial Hasib (1979) by Hossny, who got exported to Paraguay in 1982; Imperial Na Malis (1983) by Moniet El Nafis, an exceptional winner of flat racing in the USA from 1986 to 1989, and the adorable stallion Imperial Im Mahal (1985) by Ansata Imperial. However, Malekat El Gamal’s most successful daughter was conceived at Albadeia Stud Farm and imported in utero. She was Imperial Sayyah (06.02.1975) (Kayed x Malekat El Gamal), a full sister of Amir AlBadeia, who arrived in America where she was born. Imperial Sayyah (06.02.1975) was an excellent mare and is remembered for having produced two horses with special stories. The stallion Orfan Bey (22.08.1992) by Ansata Halim Shah (28.04.1980-Sept.1994) (Ansata Ibn Halima x Ansata Rosetta), Imperial Sayyah’s last son, bred by Mr. Luis Miguel Muzquiz and registered in the American Stud Book.
Orfan Bey was owned by Luis Miguel Muzquiz and Eduardo Apellaniz of Mexico City, Mexico. He was imported to the U.S.A., in 1998, by Mrs. Eileen Verdieck, President of International Equine Management Inc., Tombal, Texas, where he reproduced until 2002. On 2 July 2002, Orfan Bey was imported to Italy to spend the rest of his life at Pietriccio Rosso Farm of Mr. Aldo Aldi, Manciano, Grosseto. However, it was her daughter Sundar Alisayyah (01.06.1987) by Ruminaja Ali, who brought Imperial Sayyah greater fame. Sundar Alisayyah was a magnificent mare. Among her descendants, we find the dam of champions Kamasayyah (1992) by Imperial Al Kamar, who was a Qatar National Champion Mare and Middle East All Nations Cup Champion Mare in 2002. HS Kisra (1993) was another full brother of Kamasayyah who won the Chilean Stallion National Championship in 1995. Sundar Alisayyah was also the dam of the 2003 World Champion Stallion and 2005 Egyptian Event Supreme Champion Stallion in Lexington, Al Adeed Al Shaqab (13.04.199504.11.2018) by Ansata Halim Shah. Despite winning many Halter titles and covering some of the prettiest mares in the world, this stallion didn’t produce a son of his caliber. TO BE CONTINED...

IN CONCLUSION Everyone enjoyed a beautiful show indeed! The Stoops have managed to create something truly unique in the Netherlands. They welcomed owners and trainers to their large arena, where the horses impressed everybody. This year’s horses were truly exceptional. Soon after versatile Stoop Family, the judges, the exhibitors, the organizing team, the DCs, the ring master, the volunteers, assistants, and the staff of Dutch Equine Estate deserve particular praise. The winners got presented with beautiful trophies offered by H Steelart Jonker and Els Stegeman. Mrs Paola Drera (Italy) took the pictures, while WebTv Arabian Essence (Italy) live-streamed the entire show. Every year, the Stoop family members come passionately dedicated to organizing a show where young horses have a great first experience and participants can relax and enjoy magnificent Arabian Horses in the friendly atmosphere North Brabant is known! he Algawsit Endurance Cup 2022® will be held in Castellaneta Marina (TA), Apulia, from 15th16th October. For it, an Organizing Committee composed of ADS Apulia Endurance Center and CT Arabians manages the technical and sporting aspects of the much anticipated international equestrian endurance event. The team has been working on the organization for a CEI1*100 km for quite a while now. Rides will be through some of the most beautiful scenery the world can offer, starting from Castellaneta Marina, riding through the scented pine forests around Stornara, along the Lato

River, and the heavenly beaches of the Ionian coast. Riders will have two loops of extraordinary beauty to complete. Apulia has long been associated with horses. And as part of its commitment to becoming a world-class endurance destination, Castellaneta Marina will be happy to welcome all the riders who want to participate from all over the world. Participants in this competition will gather in such a magical and nuances-rich region of southern Italy. It strongly points to the development of our equestrian discipline, providing a 50.000,00 € prize money by a great sponsor, and due to the contributions from numerous
organizations involved in the development and promotion of Italian Horse Breeding, such as MiPAAF (Minister of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policy), ANICA (Italian Purebred Arabian Horses Association) and the backing of AIACE (Endurance Horse Breeders Italian Association). According to the prize money allocated, the international CEI1 *100 km winner will receive a prize of 10.000,00 €. A total of 35,000.00 € of the remaining prize money will get shared among the top ten classified riders in the CEI1 * 100 km class after the deduction of FEI rights. AHM | 253

The new partnership between ADS Apulia Endurance Center and CT Arabians, including Francesco Colombo Race Track Director – President of ASD APULIA, Monica Mori, Event Director and Luigi Capogna, Event Administrative Manager - and owner of CT Arabians - are honoured to be able to contribute to the organization of
such an exclusive competition shining with a rich prize pool. During our conversation, Event Director Monica Mori points out: “Our common dedication, hard work and sacrifices are a testament to our professionalism. And this endurance project is a fantastic opportunity for us to embrace. Then, with a package that offers everything on-site: the track, the stables, and an exceptional endurance tourist village to host the crews, putting together the Algawsit Endurance Cup 2022 is a challenge to accept with great enthusiasm...As part of the motivation, there is also the intention to attract foreign sports teams, parAHM | 255
ticularly those from the Middle East. Monica reminds me that Algawsit Endurance Cup 2022® will take place just a week before the World Endurance Competition in Isola Della Scala, near Verona. The crews of Verona might think of a short holiday here, have fun at the event, and then leave again. Bari-Verona is a we l l - s e r ve d flight route, and Bari Airport is not too far from Castellaneta Marina. The drive takes about an hour. Getting here should be no problem at all. Guests will find exceptional comfort at “I Turchesi Village Resort”, a four-star touristic infrastructure. “We are taking care of everything”, Monica Mori concludes: “ A big beach party offered by prestigious sponsors will close the international event and welcome the riders of the national categories the next day. A great party for everyone”.

aterina Morgan Horse Polo Art Gallery is a digital gallery dedicated to classical and contemporary equestrian art. Horses here are represented as symbols of strength, beauty, and vigour. First and foremost, they are associated with a mix of values, such as intellect, status, elegance, and nobility. For this reason, equestrian art can harmoniously complement various commercial and private spaces. The gallery collaborates with more than 30 artists from all
AHM | 260
over the world and exhibits more than 300 works created in different styles and genres: fine art photography, drawings, paintings, sculptures, wall paintings and monumental art. Some of them have already been integrated into private and corporate collections around the world, including several prestigious royal Collections. Indeed, the gallery has the absolute privilege of collaborating with artists whose notable commissions inclu-
de those to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, the ruling family of Dubai and Lord and Lady Bamford. These incredible artists can create works of art on commission according to each client’s different tastes. But also build an entire collection of works of art united by a common theme, like, for example, Arabian horses. Sculptors and painters are truly capable of designing unique art pieces for both public places and events. For these and many other reasons, we on the Arabian
Horse Magazine team have loved the idea of sharing with you a beautiful selection of artists whose works are dedicated to Arabian horses. We are pretty sure you will love them as much as we do! One of the Gallery’s leading artists, whose artwork is closely connected with Arabian horses, is Rafael Lago. Rafael was born in the Colombian countryside - a place with the magnificent beau-
AHM | 261
ty of the natural landscape that has inspired him to create. Since Colombia is very rancher and agricultural, there has always been a place for a horse. That’s how the vital power of nature and the enchantress of the horse became a leitmotif in the art of Rafael Lago. Further in his career, Rafael tried himself in different directions: as a mural artist, stage designer, and producer of the theatre, ballet and opera but his passion for

horses has always prevailed. Delicate lines, grace and nobility, as well as the dynamic movements of the Arabian horses, were depicted in recent Rafael artworks. We are also pleased to show You these absolutely new Rafael sketches that have not been published yet even on our website. They can be realized in different sizes according to the Client’s preferences on commission.

Ignacio Videla is considered to be one of the most talented contemporary sculptors. Born in Argentina, he blended his sculpting skills with many years of horse jumping experience bringing to life the authentic

and truly realistic pieces of art. His bronze sculptures of Arabian horses capture every detail and reflect the characters of these magnificent creatures.

We have the absolute privilege to collaborate with Edward Waites – an established British sculptor whose notable commissions include those for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, the ruling family of Dubai, Lord and Lady Bamford. Here’s one of his recent artworks named ‘Arabian White’. Marie Ackers is a well-known artist whose work can be found in various galleries in the UK and Europe. Her inspiration comes from various sources from the “French Animalier” to the simplicity and purity of Brancusi’s work, the shapes and presence of Henry Moore sculptures, and the sharp and clean lines of Calder metal sculptures as well Pompom, Lynn Chadwick, old e modern architecture.
