In the weekend of 21 and 22 June, more than 180 horses among the most important in the world of the thoroughbred Arabian horses paraded in the field of Menton, in Cote d’Azur, during the Mediterranean & Arab Countries Arabian Horse Championship, which this year celebrated its twenty-first edition. The show A ECAHO class of Menton is usually a showcase of horses which will be the protagonists of the next World Cup, to be held from 28 to 30 November 2014 during the Salon du Cheval in Paris. Although the participation of Italian breeders was very large, and despite the quality of the horses was at the highest level possible, they were not comparable with the superstars of the studs worldwide. Also this year madame Christianne Chazel and his team have carried out an impeccable show, with a great organization, but especially with a large hospitality. Very interesting was the initiative of the Al Zobir Stud: a donation of a prize of 2,500 Euros from the first to the fifth classified in the yearlingclass.

Intervista al Dott. F. Santoro Giudice Internazionale di Livello A Interview with Dr. F. Santoro, International A Judge
062
Salve Dott.
Hello Dr. Santoro, thank you very much for accepting our interview.
How did you begin to take an interest in the Arabian horses? I have always had a passion for horses, shared with Serenella, my wife, and we owned and rode horses since our young age. About 35 years ago came the fateful encounter with Satir, our first Arabian horse, purchased at the age of about 2 years, and who left us recently, at the age of 32. It’s thanks to him if the love for this type of horse became a breeding program. At what age did you become a judge? My path as a judge began in 1991. Would you tell us how did you start? I started by chance, when the number of ECAHO judges was small, and it was big my curiosity to understand whether the type of the Arabian horse that I had in mind
vo in mente era quello giusto. No comment! No comment!
was the right one. Selfishly, I started for learning more than for teaching. The experience I made on the race fields was for me very important to better understand the breeding programs and define the essence of the Arabian horse. How was it born your passion for the morphology competitions? The passion for this horse has always been allround, indeed. In fact, the results obtained in the morphological competitions confirmed us the quality of our program, but Shahil has produced a world champion in endurance races, a European champion in Western races and some of its products have excelled in flat races. The morphology has so many passionate breeders and amplifies the qualities of this breed, and it should not make us forget that the Arabian horse is a horse, and as such it has an end use and it is not just a “nice statue.” Could you tell us what is your ideal type of Arabian horse? and which are the features it should have? The ideal type of Arabian horse, to me, is defined by the paintings of Vernet son. In those prints is easily understood by what this breed is distinguished from the others. All parts of the body of Arabic are different from other breeds, and make it “the Arabian horse.” Its pug head, the elegance, the agility, the aesthetic beauty, the expression, the impression of strength and power are its most important features. What is in your opinion the most important point, when judging a horse? As an Arabian horse judge what I put in the forefront of my judgment is the Arab “type”. If they present to me a subject with a beautiful head and a good model, but that is dragged by the handler in the ring with its tail between its legs, this will never be my champion. What affects your judgment? No comment! To what extent do you think that your specific knowledge distinguishes you from other judges who have different professional and breeding skills? No comment!

What is the importance of the breed expos for you? Do they really win the most deserving horses of the today standard? The shows have a great importance and for the breeding and for the market. The problem is that sometimes we see the subjects, which in our opinion do not deserve to win, becoming champions and this is not good for neither breeding nor for the market. Each judge has its own system of judgment and as well as for me the type is essential, for a colleague of mine might be more important the horse to have an extreme head or a perfect body. In addition, judging from the stands is very different from doing it in the ring and a judge who judged well is often misjudged. If you could change anything in the current system of judgement, what would it be? We struggled on the best judging system for years. They continue to criticize the points system is not good, because you do not use the system properly from 1 to 20 and you judges from 16 up, the comparative system is boring for the audience and so on. I think the current system of 1 to 20 would be the best if all the judges would use it. But all they should use it. What are the differences you notice between the Arabian horse today than those in the past? For sure the heads are more extreme than in the past, but maybe we’re losing all the rest, and the type is not only a beautiful head. In your opinion, which are the qualities needed to become a good judge? You need to have experience in breeding, an ideal in mind and you have to reward those who are close to their ideal. Field experience is essential and we should see more young judges in the race fields. What was the greatest satisfaction you got from your work as a breeder and judge? As a breeder I am very satisfied with the program that we have brought forward in recent years and with the recognition we have received, as a judge I felt two or three times a strong emotion in judging some subjects which were to me over the top and I was very gratified. What features should have an exhibition horse? It must be a horse that shows its charisma. It must enter the field blowing, with a straight tail, and a superb expression ... this is the Arabian horse. And since no one is perfect, its flaws must not be such as to cancel its qualities. Which do you think are the best subjects in the history of the Arab thoroughbred, the most undervalued and overvalued ones? No comment! What are the positive and negative aspects of being a judge? (Travel, exposure time, and so on) I always said that when I get home from a show I’m
quelli più sottovalutati e quelli sopravvalutati? No comment! No comment! No comment! No comment! No comment!
always more tired than when I left, and not just for the trip.Emotional stress is even more tiring. Shows world of the Arabian horse has changed a lot. There are fewer spectators and participants. Even the way in which the horses perform has changed greatly in recent years. What is the reason for this development in your opinion? The world economic crisis is at the root of the show crisis. A market languishing for years doesn’t help the breeders. Today we see in the shows the subjects of those who can afford it and therefore the number of participants is always smaller. The Arabian horse market has become increasingly difficult. What do you think needs to change to create a resume? There are no magic recipes. As long as the crisis doesn’t end, it will be difficult to resolve this situation. Did you take part in any expo with your horses? No comment! What does the word to breed mean for you? It means culture of the Arabian horse, passion, patience and luck. In your opinion, what are the qualities needed to become a good breeder? No comment! In your opinion, what knowledge a breeder needs to get good results? No comment! What advice would you give to those who want to embark on this adventure of becoming a judge? To have contact with the more experienced judges, to mature a judging system that makes it clear to participants what they would prefer to appreciate in a horse you judge, and to have the opportunity to gain experience in the field. Can you tell us the funniest episode that happened to you during these years? No comment! What are your plans for the future? To keep myself in a decent psychophysical condition enough to continue on breeding and traveling the world, and judging my love, the Arabian horse.

Intervista all’handler italiano Luca Oberti Interview to Luca Oberti, italian handler
Hello Luca, firstly thanks for agreeing to be interviewed by our magazine. Let’s start from the beginning: how and when was born your passion for the world of horses and of morphology? Hello Gianluca, thank you for giving me this opportunity, as you know, my passion was inherited from my father Gilberto, he started this adventure when I was only 10 years old, and although I was a child I followed him everywhere. Do you still remember your first show? I have a doubt if it was really my first one, but I have wonderful memories about the Erba show at the Elmepe Palace in 1988, with Natovka, the first Arab filly purchased by Gilberto, with my friend Andrea from Mr. Borgonovo’s stud. The filly won the category, she was
presented by a Handler that was a famous expert of that time. Do you miss the shows of those times or do you prefer the atmosphere you can breath today? Surely what is lacking today, compared to the shows of the past, I think is the number of horses participating and the number of breeders. At present we should find a solution to bring enthusiasts to attend again these championships. How did you expand your theoretical and practical knowledge about handling and training show horses? In 2001 I left for a wonderful experience in the States, meeting Michael Byatt and I had the opportunity to work alongside him and to the side of his trainer in those days, Robin Hopkinson. I owe to them the completion of all the techniques that I learned in part while I worked in their family stud. Then I had the opportunity to help many other trainers in some shows and I worked for some breeders from Europe and from Middle Fast, so being able to put into practice what I had learned “stealing” here and there. Why did you decide to train Arabian horses? As I already told above, following the passion of my father, I discovered that I had a lot of emotions in working with horses, to see them improve from day to day and enjoying the fruits in a show was the icing on the cake. Are you also a breeder? I have been an Anica member for many years, although I don’t have many mares and I breed just a few foals a year. Which is the blood line that you like the most? And the reason why? Well, I remember the first mare in the family, she was bred at Tersk, then a pure Russian arrived, then an Egyptian / Polish and the third was a straight Egyptian ... what to say .. I don’t have a favorite one, but I really like a nice mix that can win the shows... 085
L’ultima, qualche giorno fa a Città di Castello: Dream of Glory Campione Italiano Stalloni...
In which country did you find a better quality of a show at the organizational level? In my opinion there is no nation which organizes the shows better than another, I can tell you that my favorite show, as always, is that of Menton, I love Aachen a lot for the high quality of horses, they are always present. Staying in Italy, my ideal show would be in a location such as Cattolica, where Anica organized an Italian championship and an A Class, in a structure which perfectly gave hospitality to our beloved horses. Is there any victory you feel closest to? The last one, a few days ago in Città di Castello, Dream of Glory was the Italian Stallions Champion. From your point of view, which is the most difficult criterion to judge? I think the easiest one: the limbs, although they may be straight or crooked, they are often valued in the wrong way... maybe it happens because they are difficult to evaluate, or maybe because’ points are used to rank, and doing so they don’t help breeders to understand what’s wrong with their subjects. What advice would you give to those who approach the world of the thoroughbred Arabian horse for the first time? To think carefully about it, to assess more subjects and to consult more experts in this field... the purebred Arabian horse is a dangerous disease: once you get it, you will no longer be able to live without... What has changed over the years since your first show? Nothing! I always feel the same emotions winning and I still get angry if I lose, like the first day. Becoming a Handler... Is it a hidden dream or a coincidence of life? In fact, I was grooming and training in my family’s stud until Gilberto took a tear in the leg in Aachen and, since he wasn’t able to recover in time for Aarhus European Championship in 2000, in a couple of weeks I had to face my first presentation during a very important show. Is there any particular symbiosis between handler and horse? In my opinion the added value of a Handler lies just in creating or finding an empathy between him and his horses. What is so special about the Arabian horse? Being the oldest known breed and being considered the breed which enhances all the other breeds, I can only answer you in an obvious way: they are beautiful, special and unique. What are your expectations for the near future? Well, to continue on winning, it seems obvious to me.
in uno show importantissimo. Ho anch’io i miei “cocchi” preferiti...
Therefore I would like to be able to help friends on breeding the perfect horse ... What is your typical day? I wake up early in the morning and I quickly go to the stables, I check all my “children” and then I start with putting mares and foals into the paddocks and then I continue with the training of all the others, who have to work for becoming future champions. Among all the horses that you have been entrusted, which is the one with whom you have had to bear a greater commitment? We spend the same energy and the same commitment for all horses, there are subjects to which you have to devote more time and some that learn more easily. I also have my favorite “darlings”... Among the horses you have shown, is there any particular bloodline that you feel more trainable than the others, or it is just a question depending from horse to horse? I think it’s a question of personality and not of bloodline. Is there any horse you are particularly fond of? Of course you do... Thanks for all and good luck for this final exposition year.

I soggetti partecipanti erano circa 60, quasi tutti nati

Marian Duncan Marian’s studio was once a butcher’s shop at the front of her mud brick home in the small, quiet country town of Manildra. Before graduating to a graphic artist, Marian worked at show card and ticket writing. Marian began painting horses professionally in 1986 after having paintings published on the covers of Australian Arabian Horse News and also Arabian Horse Express 1993 (USA). Marian’s works are all over Australia and she has become well known for specialising in paintings of Arabian horses. She has paintings in the USA, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. Since 1990, Marian has produced, for the Arabian Horse Society of Australia, multimedia artworks that are used for promotional material nationally and internationally. Using photographs to paint her commissions, combined with her talents using different mediums, Marian can add imagination to her work to create a truly stunning painting. Marian works with matte acrylic on watercolour paper, also pen and ink, pastels and oils. Marian says she paints Arabian horses simply because they are her passion. She tries to capture that special look and beauty that every Arabian admirer, owner and breeder knows they have. To create each horse as an individual with the ability to portray their beauty, energy and power in her paintings, Marian’s love for horses comes through in all her paintings.

Interview: Des Alpes Arabians The Farm of Otto & Anne - Lise Berg
How and when did you realize that the Arabian horse could play an important role in your life? More than 30 years ago we bought a horse for our daughter. It was a beautiful part-bread Arabian with a fantastic spirit. We joined the Norwegian Arabian Society and went to our first meeting. As we arrived, a milk white stallion was taken out of a horsebox. Tail up, mane flying – that was it - we were just hooked. This was the first pure bread Arabian that we had ever seen. We just looked at each other, and decided there and then that we just had to have one. In fact we ended up with two riding horses, a mare and a huge gelding. There are endless forests around Oslo, and on weekends we often did 40- 50 km hardly without meeting anybody. 114
It was first after we moved to France in 1989 that we bred for the first time. We had two mares and three fantastic stallions close by, Pirouet from Philstrom, several times European and World Champion. Alidaar and Lohim also from Poth. We got actually some good offspring, and we won a some championships in the south of Europe with all the three horses we bred. This was not too bad for beginners, but we understood rather quickly that this would never bring our horses up to top class. What breeding lines have influenced your breeding in the past and today? What are the differences you have found? Things started first to go really well when we bought our foundation mare, EAMT Marihuana (BJ
Thee Mustafa x El Melissa by El Perfecto) in April 2001. We really loved her pedigree. Marihuana was very feminine, had a wonderful conformation and a terrific attitude. She was class winner in Wels in her first show and Champion filly in Koeningstatten a few weeks later. We must admit today – 13 years later - that we owe everything to Marihuana. She has had nine foals already, all champions! She has a pretty good selection of stallions, Simeon Sadik (2), Lothar El Nyhl (1), Padrons Psyche, Marwan al Shaqab (2), GazalAl Shaqab (1), QR Marc (2). Why do you breed purebred Arabians and for how many years? It has become a life-long passion, that after family, friends and business is the most important thing in our life. We have now been in the game for 31 years. What is your very personal goal in breeding? Our goal is to breed top quality Arabian show horses combining these qualities with all the assets that this horse has acquired thru’ its thousands of years of history. Is your breeding a business or a leisure activity? Purely leisure and endless pleasure! We have just six horses, apart from Marihuana all being des Alpes (home) bred. What is the optimal number of horses on the farm, how many foals do you breed per year, if all goes well? We are really “Micro Breeders” - having a couple of foals every year from our three mares - Marihuana, her daughter Maya and her daughter again Mira. As of today we have another weanling filly Margaux from Marihuana, Maestro - a 2yrs old colt from Maya, and Valentino a yearling colt after Macho (Padrons Psyche x Marihuana). Thus, all together a pretty small herd of six horses all stabled at Claverdon Stud in Warwickshire in England and managed by Chris Lowe. Which stallions have you always wished to breed
your mares with and why? We have actually used most of the stallions of our dreams, ref pt 2. Everyone is talking about the economic crisis, many reduce the number of horses and foals, as the selling is no longer the same thing and many Arabians are very cheap to buy. How is it with you? First of all, we are still in an unprecedented financial and social crisis that affects most of the European countries as well as both the North and the South America. Evidently horse breeding and other leisure sports are affected as well. Fortunately we have our Arabian friends still active and keeping the business
115
alive. But their demands are orientated towards world class show horses and top endurance horses. This has more and more created a market situation with an enormous difference between the normal Arabian horses and the exceptional show horses. What decisions are to be taken as a breeder to keep breeding active? Are there any critical points in the breeding the Arabian? There are two different ways forward; a) Exploit new markets. Good examples are The Moscow Show in November and the planned show in Shanghai in 2015 b) Make more promotion for the Arabian horses on all levels. When you look at the current number of horses in the different countries in Europe and the US it could be five (or ten!) times more Arabians, as there does not exist a better family or sport horse. There are a number of changes that could be implemented in the existing shows that could multiply the excitement and promotional effect to the benefit of the Arabian horse. How it is for you to see your own horses in the shows? What feeling you get about it?
116
I love to bring horses to the shows. Honestly how many things in life can a 72 years old man do that creates more excitement and adrenaline? Must admit that Anne-Lise has always some serious nerve attacks when our horses enter the ring. Are you quite happy with the way the international shows are being conducted and run? Quite frankly not! I consider that today’s judging is far too much orientated towards a special consideration of type that gradually, kills the inherent qualities of the Arabian horse, into a kind of useless mantel type horse! Many of today’s judges are only judging heads and owners! Extreme dish is better that a good dish, even if extreme dish is unfavourable for the horses. The scores for heads are often, repeated in the type marks even when tail carriage is non-existent, movements mediocre and bodies and legs under-developed. This trend is magnified by having special trophies for the best head! Unfortunately neither ECAHO nor any other body seem to worry too much about the future and qualities of the Arabian horse.

Dubai Arabian horse stud continues to rise to the Summit Eng. Mohammed Al Tawheedi
Our achievements are the fruit of the scientific strategy and process, which serve the Arabian horses And is consistent with the vision of our leadership, led by Knight Arabs Abdelaziz Al Marzooqi
Dubai stud stepping steadily towards the horizon that moves to global GDP If each success has men who make it and who keep ensuring its continuity and stand on the paths and direct to the shortest way to reach to the noble goals ,Dubai Arabian Horse stud under the supervision of Engineer Mohammed unifying general manager of the stud and AbdelAziz al marzooqi, Executive Director, has become a synonymous name with quality and excellence in the world of international championship for Arabian Horses. In this meeting, Engineer Mohamed speaks about some starred aspects of the Dubai stud and its global growth level and performance through local production, which continues to rise steadily towards the summit. What made between Dubai Stud cleats world leader in a short time? Al Tawheedi: “The Dubai Arabian Horse stud should be among giants in the world of Arabian horses, due to the unlimited support and the Permanent Care Dubai stud has from the Knight of the Arab knights His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai who teaches everyone the altitude of his knighthood and his prestigious gold sports. Therefore, the less we can give to H.H the champion of gold, are these achievements that marked the past three years, especially with the beginning of the year 2012 in
148
which he had lots of gold tour which had echoed greatly around the world. We consider the successes ,which were achieved , came side by side with the major successes and the national excellence achieved by Dubai and the UAE in all fields, including various equestrian sports for which we congratulate ourselves and our leaders out, also congratulate His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid on his athletic achievement which he got in World Endurance championship wishing him and the master of the Arab knights ,the son of the Arab knights that all their efforts and their work and other sports to be crowned with success. We are determined to put more effort to achieve the best and the first place as His Highness leadership approach. To which level did Dubai stud reach in the local production? Al Tawheedi: local production in many of the stables in the UAE remarkably increased in a very short time. The Dubai Arabian Horse considered as a model for the power of the achievements made by the UAE, because it was able to ac achieve high results depending on local production, which is expected to be more cost-effective in the near future. In order to be titled as a local producer of, we initially choose mares. Therefore, our focus was initially on local production rather than through
buying new horses. This trend has begun to gain fruit through excellence that we have achieved in several tournaments as a prelude to the success of the production processes of the local horses with records such as global gold stallion global “Royal Colors” and then “Q R Mark.” What is the secret behind this glory? Tawheedi : It’s not about the secrets of success, but a scientific breeding program relied on after a very careful selection process for a number of outstanding horses. As this process has achieved good results so far, the coming years will be a date with sparkle and global achievements that are expected to be resolved image of the efforts we make to reach to the top in excellence and productivity After we were able to produce a number of good horses with good pedigrees, the focus is currently centered on maintaining a quality of horses, horses with the sufficiency of production is very good. This was reflected on the extent of demand for the production of the stud by the owners, especially the new owners whom we seek to support on the basis of the philosophy of the stud since its inception in order to develop Arabian horses, maintain and enable small owners to own Arabian horses through means of encouraging, like auctions, in which Dubai Arabian horse
Championship auction was the last stations that will continue to achieve noble goals stem from a noble vision. The embryo transfer Dubai stud has become more successful than the most successful foreign experiences that were the only reference. Our production now a day has great power to compete globally and achieve very good results and a distinct continuously at the same rhythm. We have achieved remarkable successes in the local production that match the successes achieved by global parties in America and Europe through a long process of work. It’s a new situation where we used to perform embryo transfer abroad but now is done within the walls of the stud. Does this mean that the countdown for the movement of production between the West and the East has already begun? Al Tawheedi:” indeed, our production has become the focus of attention, whether in local markets or globally. This was reflected more clearly through auctions held in conjunction with the Dubai International Arabian Horse Championships. The size of the rapid progress achieved by Dubai Stud in the world of production through embryo transfer technology make it obliged to raise its production to the public in the global markets in which the UAE market is considered the most

powerful due to the importance of the Arabian horse and its sport, the infrastructure and the technical possibilities available to them. The unlimited support ,in order to uphold the Arabian horse and the equestrian in the UAE, has founded a solid foundation for the production and sharing of scientific , sport and structural excellence in the world of horses and horsemanship, the thing that drew the world’s attention and captured the interest and made us we gain the respect and special favor in appreciation. The wise policies of our leaders were and is still the basis of our successes and our appreciation from the world in the field of horses and horsemanship...etc. Thankfully, the Dubai Stud today is progressing amazingly in the global competition and At the podium International, a huge number of horses that descended from champion horses owned by Dubai Stud wan wandering and shines with distinction in the fields of Arabian Horse in all parts of the world. What is the main reason behind developing the stud production? Al Tawheedi: As the UAE has been able to become productive global for camels through embryo implantation ,it keeps moving steadily in the production of Arabian horses locally as well beside the possibilities of productivity abroad. What characterize the production centers in the

UAE, whether for horses or Camels is developing an initial relationship with the production without making purely commercial objectives, indeed its work considered as a patriotic and nationally act which serves the Arabian horse and Arabian camels. Therefore, those centers put all their potentials in the hands of citizens and our brothers from the Arab states as an encouragement to take advantage of that and to contribute to the preservation and the development of the gains. Rather, we are supporting horse owners outside the Arab world under supreme guidance from a broad vision and insight into the role we can play to serve the Arabian horse, in which Dubai stud is prominently among supporters, led by the Emirates Association for breeders of Arabian horses and the Organization of the Arabian horse.... Dubai Arabian Horse Stud continues to put all the potential in the hands of horse owners, especially those who cannot carry out with the production process. Furthermore, the doors are open to all owners to enable them for that so they can benefit from the embryo transfer techniques, which is a fundamental process for the stud, and it aim to encourage and serve mainly Arabian horses. Last word at the end Al Tawheedi: Great thanks and gratitude ,form me and all managers and employees in the Dubai Arabian Horse stud, to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, for his generosity and permanent support to the Arabian Horses ,moreover, for providing with all the possibilities and ways to consolidate the status of UAE in general and Dubai in particular among horses, equestrian and beauty in the world.
Abdelaziz Al Marzooqi, Executive manager of the Stud sheds light on some aspects related to the success of this Arab world experiment, which promises the most beautiful achievements in the future .. and which constitute a wide range of selected international Arabian horses heads , in which we hold a number of them and put in the hands of the new owners an opportunity to own some of them. What about the stud participations in all Nations Championship in Germany and the world championships in Paris? Al Marzooqi: our participation will be concentrated in a limited number of horse heads quality, as usual, in Foreign tournaments and certainly along with the skilled promising junior filly “D Shahla” the daughter of the world champion, “FT Shaella” and world champion stallion “Marajj”, in which she follows her mother footsteps of and hope to have a bright future. The new breeding generation from Dubai – SG Labib
THE NEW BREEDING GENERATION FROM DUBAI
From the old history there was written many books about the most important breeding stallions and for sure in the near future will be done also more than one talk about the champion maker WH Justice, as a producer of breeding progenies and successful show horses. During our visit in Dubai, we had the pleasure to visit the private farm of the H.E. Mr. Mohammad Al Gergawi Minister of Cabinet Affairs of the Federal Government of the UAE, there; we saw a wonderful white mare DF Halifa. We were so stunned about her type, very solid and strong confirmation. We asked some questions to H.E and he started to talk about the bloodline of DF Halifa, which was breed by Achim Dirnhöfer – Birkhof Stud Germany. In her bloodline, she is carrying the fa-

mous Al Lahab as a sire and in the mother line, she has Messoud who is by Madkour and out of the wonderful mare Maymoonah – she is Egyptian related because she has a tiny influence from the Marbach lines. For us, it was great pleasure to see all his horses especially DF Halifa who was in foal from WH Justice. One year later during the open day of Dubai Arabian horse Stud, we saw her again but she was not anymore alone. Beside her was a beautiful dishy grey colt. All guests of the open day was attracted to his attitude to show himself, he has very proud charisma. Something that did catch our attention was for sure his type but most of all his very strong body in this very young age. At that moment, came in our memories all the stories about his mother, which was told by H.E. Mr. Mohammad Al Gergawi one year before. It was special to see SG Labib the year after under the new ownership Mr. Abdelaziz Al Marzooqi as a gift from the minister. We should tell that this is just the beginning of a nice sto

Now SG Labib proved himself as a sire, that he covered some mares, which was chosen by the very selective attitude of the General Manager of Dubai Stud Mr. Mohammed Al Tawheedi. He selected some Gazal Al Shaqab daughter lines and he got as first the promising filly – the wonderful D Danat. She was already a Bronze champion in Sharjah International Show 2014, Bronze Champion filly in Menton A Show 2014 and unanimous Gold Champion filly and best in show in Bergamo international C Show.

Mr. Abdelaziz Al Marzooqi, executive Manager of Dubai Stud is very proud to assist the Farm in the breeding program with his exceptional stallion SG Labib. He told us that some surprises will be shown to public from SG Labib very soon because there is a full sister of D Danat already on the ground and some other promising babies. It was not the intension form Mister Abdelaziz to have the breeding’s of SG Labib in the open market but under the advice from Paolo Cappecci and Woody (Giampaolo Gubbiotti) to add him in the Europe market for the breeding season 2015 for selected mares.

Heirloom Halters Nancy Gates established Heirloom Halters in 2009. It has been an exciting five years for Nancy designing Halters and Presentation sets for Clients all over the World. Nancy’s Halter Designing began when she was a little girl making horse blankets and halters for her Breyer Horse Models. Little did she know some 40 years later she would be designing Halter Presentation Sets for real Arabians.. When Nancy isn’t sewing her Heirloom Halters she is taking care of her own Straight Egyptian Arabian breeding farm called Antara Egyptian Arabians. Heirloom Halters is known for its vibrant mix of color combinations which highlight the horse... Nancy, believes the horse should stand out first when customizing her Halter Sets. It is a must to get the right color combinations to do this.. The horses beauty should never be overpowered by adornments.. This is Nancy’s specialty when customizing her Heirloom Halters for your horse. Heirloom Halters tack is not only beautiful but very strong. The Halters are made with nylon webbing and sewed together with a leather machine and can withstand several thousand pounds of pressure. Nancy is very passionate about her work and puts her heart in every piece she makes. All of her designs are one of a kind. Therefore, making it not only a treasure to own but a investment as well. It is very rewarding when clients come back to buy more Heirloom pieces because they felt by using these Presentation Sets helped sell more breedings and horses. One of Nancy’s highlights last year was working with the world famous Photographer Jenni Ogden. This was an experience Nancy says she will never forget... Nancy always try’s to set goals each year for Heirloom Halters. In 2013 a new design was created by Nancy called the “Mare Collection” (Pictured with her own mare “Antara Shalima”). It was designed to encourage people to promote their mares and photograph them. It was a huge success.. Now in 2014 her goal is to inspire more people to dress their horses up and have them photographed. After having lost one of her own beloved mares last year, Nancy states, “A beautiful photo may be comforting to gaze upon “. Nancy says, “ I feel so blessed and honored to be a part of these gorgeous Arabians”.

For those attentive observers and especially the entrants for the Polish National Show since a couple of years its clear that it happens to be more difficult winning in Poland then at some biggest Arabian horse shows in the world... The quality of the entries, especially from te three government oned studs - Michałów, Janów Podlaski and Białka - is out of a question but the fact that since few years we can observe the lowering number of Polish private owned horses that rather go to compete abroad then at own national show should be noticed. This year the absence of few most successful

punti.
private breeders from the past has been surely significant. The reasons of such situation are probably as many as the breeders who decide to leave their horses at homes but it should probably be given an attention for the future especially by the organizers and the national breeders organization. One of the characteristic features for Polish shows recently that surprises a lot of international observers is the highness of total scores given by the judges at that event, that is usually of 3 or more point higher then at the other shows. The speciality of Polish breeding, that we will surely see soon again at the international scene are senior mares. Their big group of white beauties, those years mainly still by Monogramm or Gazal Al Shaqab and Ekstern again gave the goose bumps to the panel of judges. And so the result was that as high total as 93 points was not enough to enter even the class top five! The highest scored - Georgia by Monogramm (silver medal and highest scored horse of the show) brought from Michałów Stud ended up with 95,17pts. At the championship podium she was accompanied by Pilarosa by Al Adeed Al Shaqab from Janow Podlaski (bronze medal senior mares) and her stud mate Pepita (by Ekstern) for gold and Best in Show title. Probably the most significant was the appearance of highly promoted Pogrom that spent a successful time in USA, he was a high hope of Janów Podlaski for senior stallions competition. Unfortunately he is not an easy horse to show and while he didn’t present his best in trot - the biggest rival and paternal halfbrother from Michalow Stud - Equator did it perfectly. He was the class winner in front of Pogrom and so in the finals - a favourite to gold medal with silver to Pogrom and bronze to Eryks - great moving Gazal Al Shaqab son from Michałów Stud. Those two studs - Michałów and Janów Podlaski shared the gold medals in finals fifty-fifty - but contrary to the past the domination of Janów Podlaski Stud in proiducing stallions seem to turn into breeding nice fillies and giving an open field for the other biggest state stud of Michalów that is lucky with a lovely colts last times - such as beautiful Morion by Kahil Al Shaqab, gold medal junior colts and Equator mentioned above. By this occassion we could also observe the success of the lease of Kahil Al Shaqab by Polish state studs. Four out of six medal winners of 2014 Polish Nationals were the sons and daughters of this stallion from Qatar who seem to add a lightness, elegance, lenght of neck and legs to the Polish horse. Another interesting observa

tion may be a new “recipe” for a champion - to cross Gazal Al Shaqab with polish daughters of Ekstern: 3 medalists sired by Kahil Al Shaqab were from such a combination. The only private bred and owned horse present in the championship awarded horses was Gotico by WH Justice bred and owned by M Arabians, top five junior stallions. In the past, the main reason for Polish breeders and some of the few international guests gathering in the fields of Polish oldest Janów Podlaski State Stud (established 1817) was the Polish National Show - the celebration of the breed and its development. Nowadays the event called Pride of Poland is rather considered mainly as the world famous auction of 40 years tradition and the show seem to stay in the shadow of the marketing for the excitement of the sale. Those are the rules of the difficult times when almost everyone need to compete for the client to survive, even the big, oldest government farms. And what brings more excitement then big money spent by rich and famous people? This year the event at Janów Podlaski State Stud was a clear confirmation that international success makes the best marketing for the breeding. After a great start of the year for Polish Arabians: Perfinka by Esparto (bred by Białka State Stud) - Reserve Champion at International Horse Show in Doha, Qatar and Junior Champion Mare of the prestigious Al Khalediah International Horse Festival in Saudi Arabia, then Latona by El Nabila B (bred by Michalow State Stud and sold from Polish private farm to Tameem Stud in Kuwait) - spectacular gold medal winner and highest scored mare of the show at Kuwait International Show they raised an interest in Polish horses, especially in the Middle East since early this year. Guests from that region started to visit Poland early this spring and continue still until today even after the auction but of course it was a good prevision for the 2014 Pride of Poland. The sale organizers decided to change a strategy this year and start the bid with 4 best offers in front - contrary to the previous years when the most valuable horses were splitting the groups of less attractive ones in the offers order. Three Gazal Al Shaqab daughters - great show and producing senior mares including Perfirka - dam of the young champion Perfinka mentioned above, Polish National Champion - Norma, Polish National Reserve Champion - Alabama and current Białka Junior Spring Show Reserve Champion 2014 - young showy

Piacolla by Enzo started the sale. The trick worked out and the prices went up to: 250 000 Euro for Norma (to Saudi Arabia), 165 000 Euro for Alabama (to Qatar), 220 000 Euro for Perfirka (to USA) and 305 000 Euro (highest bid, for Atbah Stud, Saudi Arabia). The excitement or ambitions (?) of the buyers were big enough to sell even the less attractive and often much older mares for high prices until the end and the total income of over 2 millions Euro was achieved again. During the main Sunday auction only 4 out of 28 mares were not sold. Big success against the world crisis. Although only a few limited places at the main auction are being given to the quickly developing private stud farms from Poland, they also managed to sell for good prices. The highest sold private bred and owned horse was the Fortycja by Pegasus (bred and owned by Bełżyce Arabians) that went for 80 000 Euro to Saudi Arabia. Probably the most wide promotion before the aucion and her beautiful younger half sister was already sold to Abu Dhabi this year helped her in such a success. The Summer Sale - since last year new point of the auction that gives a chance to get younger or less quality horses from state studs and most of private brought horses although one can find an interesting offers there as well. Here also the most of lots got sold, with highest bid (42000 Euro from Saudi Arabia) on beautiful Elfera by Psytadel - bred and owned by Mr Lech Blaszczyk. As expected, most of the buyers came from Middle East although amongst the regular guests of Pride of Poland such as Atbah and Al Muawd Studs from Saudi Arabia or Mrs Shirley Watts, Halsdon Arabians, UK we could have met also new at the auction but also active in buying participants from exotic Iran and Namibia. Another positive sign in such a difficult time of horse overproduction and narrowing market!

Where is born this passion for horses? I had it always, since I was a child, when I heard anyone riding a horse, I ran out so I could approach them and I could be able to touch their horses.
What do you love about them? The nobility of their character, the serenity they inspire, and the trust they have in us.
How did you come to the Arabian Horse? It was love at first sight!!! My first horse was an Arabic mare of Spanish line, Amiranda, which,by

Would you tell us a story about it,which you are particularly fond of? I was walking alone, trying a new trail and the horse balks, it doesn’t want to go forward. I get it ... and we sink into a swamp up to our shoulders !!! It knew that, I do not, despite this it trusted me the same. What an effort to get out of the swamp!!!!
What’s special about this breed? A beautiful appearance, accompanied by a big brain and a big heart; they give you everything.
Cosa ti affascina del mondo del Cavallo Arabo? La sua estrema duttilità.
What fascinates you about the world of the Arabian horse? Its extreme flexibility.
What is the characteristic that you appreciate most in this breed? The nobility of spirit that you can’t find in other breeds, especially in those with a cold blood. In other words, “the heart.”
How did your adventure as a breeder start? With a failed attempt with Amiranda, I couldn’t make it become pregnant for 2 years. And then I breed everything in my house from canaries, goats, dogs, horses.
Can you tell us how you started this job? It all started as a game, first a little place for my 2 horses, then a friend, then another... and it became a job. How is your day as a breeder? In the morning, I wake up early, I feed the horses at home and I general look if everything is ok. Then, while my wife puts in the paddocks the horses of Seregno, we set off to Carate, we take a tour of fodder, we take out all the mares with foals, shifts in the paddocks for the stallions, pit cleaning, checking heat, withdrawals from the Storm, ecc. And in the evening I act in reverse, of course assisted by my wife and by a collaborator. How many years have you bred this breed of horses? 191
Since the early nineties. When it took form your breeding program? The new program has started after 2007, because the stables burned with all the horses inside. Don’t make me think about this.
Dai primi anni novanta.
Could you mark out the characteristics of the Arabian horse? What do you seek in your horses? First of all the mares must have good physicality and athleticism. We ride all them, as the first Arabian horse was born as a riding horse. Then I want good characters, good and big eyes and refined heads. Which bloodlines do you mainly use? The Russian one for the bodies, the Spanish one for the big eyes and for the character. Then all their crosses and derivatives. Do you prefer one in particular? The reason why? I’m sentimentally attached to the Spanish line, though now it is very difficult to find high-level pure stallions. How do you manage the sale of foals which are not particularly suitable for breeding? I usually move them to the endurance and to the countryside, because they almost always have a good body and a good character. Which are the goals you would like to reach with your stud? To join a great body with a great head. Which are your most important mares? Regarding mares already in activity: Haisha Gyo, by Lucky Dream x Habiba Rey; Fer Kaaba,a pure Spanish mare and 2 times champion of Spain. We recently purchased a filly, Malika regalis, from Psyrasic x Chawina, in which we place much hope. Which is the most important stallion or stallions of your stud, and for what features they have met your reproductive expectations? The stallion is a horse born with us,Storm the billhook. It is producing very well, for now all his foals are improvements compared to their mothers
Allevi Cavalli Arabi da show? Quanto è cambiato l’ambiente degli shows, rispetto a 15 /20 anni fa?
and who have used it is very happy with the result. Are there any young stallions born in the stable, that you think you can keep with you for improving your stud? Surely Storm which improves all the heads and produces foals with a sweet character. Do you breed Arabian horses for shows? Yes. What fascinates you about the world of shows? The comparison with other breeders. If it is yes, how was born your passion for the morphology contests? In reality it is a passion that I have always had. I have done many shows with the dogs, and then starting with the horses it was a must to begin. Would you tell us about a horse of yours that has particularly distinguished itself morphologically? Our star, the prince of the team, is always him, Storm, nicknamed “Stormino” by us and others. In addition to the beautiful head, which characterizes it and makes it appreciated by the general public, he has a wonderful character, calm and playful, and is able to conquer all with his big sweet eyes. How it changed the environment of the shows, compared to 15/20 years ago? Unfortunately, much has changed, and not for the better. Before it was much more friendly and fun, the results were more objective and the breeders, in front of deserving subjects, complimented each other. Now there are competition and rivalry mainly, it has gone lost the spirit of conviviality of a time. With the growing power of the horses coming from the Middle East, linked to economic realities very different from the Italian ones,do you think it’s healthy to continue to work hard and spend money, knowing that you often arrive already “disadvantaged” in the shows, even in minor shows,in some way?Even knowing that the genetic basis of the Middle East horses are also made in Italy? For the small breeders like us it is very difficult 193
volmente. Per allevatori piccoli come noi è molto difficile competere, soprattutto a livello economico, poiché preparare e portare i cavalli in show è molto dispendioso. 194
to compete, especially at the economic level, since is very expensive to prepare and lead the horses in the shows. The problem is that even the judges look at the horses “made in Middle East” with a particular focus on.In any case, if you want to get noticed on the international scene, the show is a must, knowing that very often the results don’t match with expectations. Besides dealing with breeding, do you have any Equestrian Center, any farm, any specialized training center or at least another activity inherent horses? We have 2 locations: in Carate Brianza’s establishment is located the breeding,it is situated in a very green area, with paddocks and the possibility of wonderful walks. Here, in addition to mares with foals, we have several customers who delight themselves in hiking and equestrian tourism. At Seregno instead, we have an equestrian center, we offer English and western riding lessons for beginners and experts,a pony school, saddle baptism, and summer weeks for boys. In addition, in collaboration with an expert trainer, colts of any breed are tamed and problematic horses are reeducated. Do you practice any sporting activities with your horses? We use them primarily for the school and for walks. The horses signed “la roncola” are distinguished by their excellent character, suitable even for inexperienced people, and for the extreme collaboration they have towards the man. If yes, which one? At the moment, due to the extreme flexibility, we are preparing some of the colts for the reining and for the western pleasure. Why did you choose this sport for your horses? What do you think about the endurance? Do you think that’s the only discipline really suitable for the Arabian horse? Why is that? Surely the endurance is the discipline that sees them protagonists in an absolute sense, but the Arabian horse is perhaps the most flexible and versatile breed in the equine world. Therefore they can have excellent results in almost all Western
A livello economico, conviene indirizzare tutti i puledri non destinati agli show, all’attività sportiva?
disciplines and, thanks to their elegance and the beautiful movements, even in dressage. What do you think about castration, do you agree that it would be better to eliminate from production the horses which are not fully adapted to the reproduction, just to prevent from saturating the market further, since we know that it is in free fall? Let’s talk about. Yes, I agree, horses which are not suitable for reproduction should be neutered, because under the saddle they are more manageable and they improve performances. At the economic level, it is necessary to route in sporting activities all the foals which are not intended to shows? How much is,approximately, the price of a one year foal? The price of foals, of course, varies from subject to subject. Our breeding policy expects very physical mares, and, in case they don’t produce “hypertype” foals for the shows, they however produce well built subjects, which are very correct, ideal to take up the sporting activity. Do you think that it is more profitable to sell foals at the age of one year, or do you prefer to train colts and place them on the market already prepared? We generally keep with us only subjects with special physical characteristics. Who do you rely on for training? We do it, supported by a trainer, Mercuri Rocco, at our center in Seregno. Here we tame and even prepare for the saddle horses from other studs also, so,if you need... Can you tell us the main results obtained, indicating the type of competition (sport or morphology), the year in which you competed, and the name of the horse with which you won? We always talk about Storm Manerbio 2010: futurity champion and best head Marina di Pietrasanta, 2011: 2nd place yearlings Porto Sant’Elpidio 2011: 2nd place yearlings and foals bronze medal Città di Castello 2012: 2nd place 2 years foals 195
Verona 2012: Italian Cup Colts silver medal Tradate 2013: 1st place three years foals and colts silver medal. Another our product, unfortunately died prematurely, was also heading towards the shows successfully. His name was Extreme la Roncola, winner of the futurity category in Travagliato,in 2011.
In your opinion, how much the climate of our country is appropriate for breeding the Arabian horses? I think there are no particular problems, they are very frugal horses which are well suited to very different climatic conditions.
Several Italian breeders are selling abroad many of the most important horses of our country. What do you think about? In a time of crisis like this, many breeders think about monetizing, because, as we all know, the market of coins is held by a handful of stallions.

In this issue we will discuss about a very common disease that affects the eye and that is undervalued many times, bringing the presence of permanent damages that strongly disrupt the visual function of the horse.
• Anatomy of the eye Before entering the diseases of this organ is good to provide some anatomical hints regarding the organ in question. The organ of sight is specialized in the reception of external light stimuli that form the images on the back of the light-sensitive part, which are then transferred to the brain through the nerves deputed to it.
The eye is composed of: 1. eyeball 2. fat frame 3. eyelids 4. the conjunctiva 5. lacrimal apparatus
The eyes in the horse have a lateral position,as in the rest of all pets, except for the carnivores where they take an almost frontal position. The eyeball is the main organ, it has an almost spherical shape, it is hollow, and it is a stratified organ formed by several layers, from outside the fibrous one, the vascular, the nervous; inside it there is an organ with the function of biconvex lens
said crystalline. This structure allows to divide the eye into three rooms, which are the front one, the rear one and the chamber of the so-called corpus vitreum. The front chamber and the rear one are occupied by the aqueous humor, while that of the vitreous is occupied by the corpus vitreum. The anterior chamber is bounded anteriorly by the cornea and posteriorly by the iris and through the pupil it communicates with the rear chamber that is delimited anteriorly by the iris and posteriorly by the crystalline. The cornea, the aqueous humor content in the
posterior and anterior cavities, and the crystalline form the reflective means of the light, which are necessary for the formation of images on the retina, which reach the brain through the optic nerve. The optic nerves start from the retinas and they reach a cerebral organ called optic chiasm. After giving a coarse hint to the structure of the eyeball, it is worth remembering that the organ of sight contains accessory organs for the globe, which have a protective and locomotion function. Mainly as regards the function of locomotion there are a series of muscles that reach the globe and that allow rotation within the orbit for being able to move the visual field; for what concerns the protection function two organs are important instead and they are represented by the eyelids, which are 203
two epithelial flaps with muscle, which have the function of protecting the eye surface and to sprinkle the tears on it,which have a cleansing and lubricating function of the corneal lens. The eyelids,in addition of being equipped with muscles, are also equipped with modified hairs which take the name of eyelashes, and have the function to filter the air from dust which can reach the eye. The last organ worthy of note is the lacrimal apparatus, which is placed in the medial angle of the eye and has the function of wetting, lubricating and cleansing the surface of the cornea; the tears produced are eliminated through the nasolacrimal duct, through the hole in the nose, after exercising their functions. • Corneal Ulcer Ulcerative diseases of the cornea are frequent events on which there must be an extreme knowledge in order to have an adequate therapeutic approach; the essential cause of ulcerative keratitis is mainly given by a traumatic event. In other types of animals such as canines, there is a racial predisposition to the formation of corneal ulcers, in horses instead the trauma usually is the triggering event of an inflammation that affects the whole cornea, causing an inflammation which is called keratitis and can lead to the residue of permanent damages which reduce the field of vision; bacteriological forms usually overlap with those caused by traumatic event. Usually the corneal phlogosis is associated with a conjunctival inflammatory form so we speak of kerato conjunctivitis. The ulcers are particularly troublesome diseases, to treat because of the non-vascularization of the cornea, therefore from the slowness with which this goes through healing. With the term corneal ulcer we don’t do more than indicating a continuous solution of such an organ surface of the eyeball, which can be more or less deep, with lesions very superficial, to deeper lesions, that may even lead to perforation of the same and consequent bacterial contamination of the uvea, up to an uveitis with loss of transparency of the aqueous humor, and thus of the visual function. In the most serious cases, you may even get a severe ophthalmia, that affects the whole structure of the eyeball; usually the veterinarian is contacted only a few days after the trauma, when the owner observes the formation of a bluish white halo on the corneal surface, that reduces the visual function of the horse.
This halo takes the name of corneal pannus and already indicates the beginning of the regenerative function of the cornea, due to the proliferation of blood vessels coming from the sclera, that go to spray the lesion for obtaining the cicatrization. On clinical examination the subject presents the eye closed, with the formation of mucous material, and with the heavily congested conjunctiva; the subject presents photophobia, and a general malaise due to inflammation of the cornea. The diagnosis is made through a careful examination of the cornea, possibly with sedation, in order to repent with attention the presence of foreign penetrating bodies, it can also be performed a diagnostic test with fluorescein and a Wood’s lamp, for determining the exact point of the trauma. The corneal ulcer therapy requires first the penumbra and the cleansing of the eyeball with 2% boric solution. Medical therapy involves the instillation of eye drops or antibiodate ointments and anti-inflammatory eye drops or ointments, with absolute attention that they are FANS; corticosteroids are absolutely contraindicated in fact, because they have a retarding function of the already slow process of healing. To clarify from the corneal pannus and the corneal lens it is advisable to use acetylcysteine eye drops. In severe cases it is advisable to instill the eye with a few drops obtained from the not corpuscular component of the same animal’s blood. The most severe cases of corneal perforation, even with proliferative forms of corneal pannus, are dealt with temporary corrective blepharoplasty, which allows conjunctival vessels directly located on the surface of the ulcer to have a more rapid healing event, after about a month it is provided the opening of the eyeball.

Swiss Mountain Cup On August 10 the swiss national stock show and a new national championship for arabian horses took place at the beautiful venue of the RPZ Lindenhof in Obergerlafingen, Switzerland. As last year the event was organized and hold by the OC team of the Swiss-Mountain-Cup for the Swiss Breeding Association of Arabian Horses. The international judges Michaela Weidner / DE, Cristina Vlades / ES and Raouf Abbas / EGY rated over 30 horses during this years event. Unfortunately there was quite a high number of notices of removal due to medical condition in the last few weeks before the event. The show started Sunday morning with the junior stallions. With a ranking of 6.2 the stallion Wasari (Pegasus x Wiselka) breeded in the stud Michalow in Poland and owned by Beata Eglin won this class. The senior stallions lined up thoroughly. The senior stallion Al Guwa Ben-Gashi (Shaklan Ibn Bengali x Barca) raised and owned by Al Guwa Arabians won the class with a rate of 6.8. Breeded in Germany and owned by Al Kalina Arabians Al Mareen (Al Milan x Marena) got runner-up. The yearling mare contest was won by Al Guwa Designa (Designed x Al Guwa Mediva) with the rating of 7.3. Al Guwa Designa was brought up by Rolf Raemy, Vollblutarabergestüt El Azrak and is owned by Deborah-Vanessa Streun. Last years foal championesse Nil Nouta (Al Marid x Nil Nikinikee) fostered by Nile Arabians and owned by Jaynie McDonald had to admit
defeat but scored a good 7.2. During lunch time there was newly added an equestrian contest. This addition was warmly welcomed and was an interesting change for the audience. The horse-riding class ‘ride and fun’ contained an examination of the riding (in groups and single), an assay of the horse as well as a survey of the equipment. Judge was Urs Aeschbacher and with 8 participants this was the largest contest group.Winner of this contest was stallion Bolero Ibn El Sueno who was raised in Switzerland and is owned and ride by Melanie Schalch. He also won the contest of sport horses in the afternoon. Runner-up was Franziska Kemmler with gelding El Divino which is a full brother of winner Bolero Ibn El Sueno.

In the afternoon the event continued with the judgement of the mare and stallion foals. As every year the foal champion was one of the most sought-after titles. This year it was sponsored by last years winner Janie McDonald. This year the winner of the title was MW Just Great (Aja Justified x MW Candara) with the rating of 7.1. Owned by the stud MW-Arabians who won this title also back in 2012. The two year old mare Khadija (Ajman Moniscione x Khuzama Bint Javier el Jamaal) of the stud EMAJ Arabians won in her category with a rating of 7.2. Also the category of the 3 year old mares was won by a horse of the stud EMAJ Arabians with a rating of 7.4 for Shamaliah (Stival x Al Shareefah). Second place went to Al Guwa Cymarelia (Al Guwa Ben-Gashi x MW Candara) raised by MW-Arabians and owned by Jenifer-Sheila Umnus-Blum. At the geldings and sport horses no one reached the gold rating of 7.0 or higher. The first senior mare class was won by Al Guwa Mediva (WH Justice x Al Guwa Mukowa) raised and owned by Al Guwa Arabians with a rating of 7.3. At the class of mares age 7-10 the winner was Al Guwa Belicia (Shaklan Ibn Bengali x Barca) of MW-Arabians with the rating of 7.2. Her competitor and runner-up La Sonrisa (Sham Bilabo x Chiara) breeded and owned by Anne-Marie Lüthi Oswald got with 7.0 also a high ranking. The last champion of the senior class was won by L.A.California
Shamalia (Stival x Al Shareefah) gold champion junior mares and best in show 2014
MW Just Great (Aja Justfied x MW Candara) foal champion 2014
(Shaklan Ibn Bengali x L.A. Contessa) with the rating of 7.1 of the stud Lasahr Arabians owned by Claudia FriedliKaifmann. L.A.California already shined during lunch time with a great 4th place at the horseback riding contest. At the junior mare contest the six mares Al Guwa Designa (Designed x Al Guwa Mediva), Nil Nouta (Al Marid x Nil Nikinikee), Khadija (Ajman Moniscione x Khuzama Bint Javier el Jamaal), MW Cynthia (Al Guwa Ben Gashi x L.A. Candela), Shamalia (Stival x Al Shareefah) and Al Guwa Cymarelia (Al Guwa Ben-Gashi x MW Candara) went into competition. Gold was won by the 3 year old mare Shamaliah (Stival x Al Shareefah). Silver went to the winner of the foal mares Al Guwa Designa (Designed x Al Guwa Mediva). Bronze was won by Al Guwa Cymarelia (Al Guwa Ben-Gashi x MW Candara). At the junior stallion contest there was only one
Al Guwa Mediva (Wh Justice x Al Guwa Mukowa) gold champion senior mares
participant Wasari (Pegasus x Wiselka) which therefore won Gold. According ECAHO-rules the second place got disqualified as he didn’t show up. There were again six participants in the senior mares contest. Gold winner was WH Justice daughter of Al Guwa Mediva (WH Justice x Al Guwa Mukowa). EQUITATVS
L’ARTE DELL’ABBIGLIAMENTO EQUESTRE

THE EQUESTRIAN CLOTHING ART “EQVITATVS”, cavalry in the ancient Romans idiom. The name is meant to be a tribute to our origins, to Italy, to Umbria, gorgeous landscape and historic frame, connection region between the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic seas where the relentless centuries march did not bury the trace of Romans battles and Punic Wars. That was the time when epic conflicts sealed close alliances between Romans and Umbrian people, when loyalty and bravery let the Umbrian people get the name of “Roman Citizens”. With these premises EQVITATVS is born, the new equestrian clothing brand that wants to combine the traditional elegance and sophistication of Italian tailoring to a young and dynamic design without ignoring the products practical aspects. A twenty years experience that brought us to know very well horses, riders and their exigencies; for this reason our attention didn’t focus only on the beauty research but also on the correct use of innovative materials for quality and newness. First of all our clothes are necessary to ride. Therefore, an elegant and technological style, but above all 100% Made in Italy for its origin and manufacture. A value added for a product born from the love for horses, horse-riding and our own region.

A new venue for enthusiasctic breeders, owners and friends of the arabian horse. Mid june, the first event of hopefully many, took place in the beautiful and well set surroundings of the city of Ikast, Denmark. The weather was at its best, with lots of sun and little wind, giving the participants and spectators the perfect frame to enjoy what we all love the most: the arabian horse. 71 horses participated all together, divided with 52 horses in the show and 31 registered for the riding event. Even we could all have wished for more horses to enjoy, all classes was completed, and for the owners, breeders and handlers it was nice that the organizers had decided to keep the ages seperated. Summoned from around Europe was Mrs. Sylvia Eberhardt, Mr. Jerzy Bialobok, Mr. Nicholas Jung and Mr. Pekka Pekkonen to judge the event. The opening of the show was put in the hoofes of the yearling colts, a fine group of 4 young boys doing their best to start of the event. It was the tall and refined CA Evouque (Redwood Lodge Essine x Bess Hariyah/Psymagin) bred by Calbar Arabians and owned by Christina Heitmann, who won the class with more than 90 points – a nice start of the day with such fine marks. Second up was another refined boy, WA Zynergi (Zonyx x TU Ephira) bred and owned by Pia Wange. WA Zynergis sire, Zonyx, owned by Kirk Arabians, was not present at this event, but was last year named European Champion in Classic Pleasure, and is very importantly licensed as breeder of Danish Warmblood, and was there awarded with a champion title in 2012. Next up was the yearling fillies. A fairly small class com-

pared to what else is seen, but with very nice quality as well. The winner of the class was the beautiful Wantasia, who started her showcareer as a foal in Aachen at the Futurity Cup last year. Wantasia is by Juwel OS who was leased by Husted Arabians into Denmark a few years back. Husted Arabians is also the proud breeder and owner of Wantasia, securing the damline by this beautiful daughter of Wanila/Ansata Nile Pasha who was put to sleep a few years ago. Second in, was SAF Liwa Bint Shalia (Lissar x DY Shalia) a lovely young bay mare, with a little attitude and will, proudly presented by her owner Al Safiyyah arabians. In the class of two year old colts, we had the first foreign participant, who also was superiorly the class winner. RP Burj Al Arab (WH Justice x Pamira Bint Psytadel / Psytadel) owned by Agmal Arabians and shown by Johanna Ullström. A big and powerful boy who collected 92,83 point for his presentation, and was later named Gold Champion Colt. Second in class was Danish bred MB Miano, another WH Justice son. He is bred by Mette Bak and was presented by his owner Aleksandra Ege Siana. Just two girls were in the next class, which was narrowly won by AWA Shanilah (Wan Kahli x Shararaa/Al Lahab) 89,17 points, breed and owned by Al Waha Arabians, with Crowns Phelua (Walu x Phedora/Psytadel) 89,0 bred and owned by Crown Arabians, following close up. Sunday we had the plesure to see Pheluas sire Walu win his class and collect the title of Gold Champion. In the 3 year old colts we once again had the plesure to wittness the impact off WH Justice in the breed. Bourhani Aldebaran by Ajman Moniscione was without a doubt a superior winner of the class, with more than 92 points followed by CA Unique by QR Marc out of Bess Hariyah. Bess Hariyah was also the dam of the winner of the yearling colts, placing her with two sons in the championship. Last class before lunch was won by strong competitors from aboad. Proud breeder and owner, Lutetia Arabians from France could wittness the succes of their breeding, placing 2 fillies of their own in the championship. Ermonia – once again with the impact of Ajman Moniscione – won the class with a beautiful bay daughter of another legend – Belazalia by Gazal Al Shaqab close up. Belazalia is now proudly owned by Safina Arabians from Belgium. After lunch we ejoyed the foal championship. 2 fillies and 2 colts competed in separate classes and finally in the championship. The oldest competitor, a chestnut colt CA Valento (El Sid x CA Zaspa/LM Polaris) was simply unbeatable receiving 91,67 in the class and named Gold Champion. The silver champion was another representative of the W-line of Husted Arabians, the beautiful filly Walicia (Nader Al Shaqab x Wianna/Aja Justified). Nader Al Shaqab has been on lease to Husted Arabians for the past 2 years and this is his first – and promising - foalcrop to be presented in Scandinavia. The Bronze champion was
Nordic Open 2014
elected from another of the important W line of Husted Arabians in combination with Ajman Moniscione – a cute colt Wan Dali out of Wakhida. A great way to finish the first day of a well organized event, eagerly awaiting the seniors to be presented on Sunday. First horse in the ring on Sunday was the beautiful CA Leena by WH Justice out of CA Zaspa, who also is the dam of the Gold Champion foal. Despite her young age she is allready an international athlete and this event was almost “a walk in the park” for her, leaving a gap of more than 2 points to her closest competitor, also named Gold Champion later. She was followed by the American bred, now Swedish owned TF Shahraaz, by Botswana. These two beautiful ladies also claimed the gold and silver title later in the day. We could have wished for bigger senior classes, as the two following had respectively 3 and 2 participants. In mares 7-10 years, it was a characteristic daughter of Mambo, the dark grey Niimah, who took the class win. She has a very distinctive face, with a tremendous dish very similar to her sire. She is bred by Wilza Arabstuteri and owned by Jannica Löwström, both Sweden, and was beautifully shown by Johanna Ullström. Once again it was the blood of Justice that gave the newly import to Denmark, Shah
Mahsima, the second place in the class. Mares 11+ may only have had 2 competitors, but the quality of the mares made up for this. Drabina ISA is well known in Denmark and usually ends up with strong points and in top of the league. This year was no exeption, receiving almost 92 points, but had to see the very beautiful Athena SA owned by Lutetia Arabians, France, pass her and winn the class. Athena also claimed the last available title in the senior mare championship. Sadly we only had the pleasure of 2 senior stallions this year and both bred in Denmark. With a powerful trot Walu (Wan Kahli x Jur Luhane/El Shaklan) entered the ring swiping his way to a convincingly class win close to 92 point in front of CA Zaine (RL Essine x CA Zabrina / WN Orquendo). Once again the quality made it up for the lack of horses, but with just two contestents in the championship it was already settled by the class. Walu was later named Gold Champion, with Zaine taking the Silver. From my point of view, as a handler and spectator it was a very nice and well organized show, with a team behind very focused on giving all present, no matter if it was breeders, trainers or spectaters the best experience possible. They continously improved the minor details during the show, for us all to have the best possible output of the day. The long distance from the stable to the show, was handled well by personal call in the stable, the DC was exeptional helpful and guiding and the team on the side provided the handlers with best possible assistance during the show. Personally I enjoyed the show, and I will most definitely be a part of this event in the future. My best recommandations for all horsebreeders, trainers and owners to go to Denmark next year to take part in a well organized show on the premises of the horses.
