Dear Breeders and Lovers of the Arabian horse, what you hold in your hands is the 2020 Autumn edition of Arabian Horse Magazine. It comes out while we are still fighting amid the coronavirus pandemic, all of which means it truly reflects what’s going on in the breeding and show industry under the current circumstances of global health crisis. With so many imponderables at this stage, national and international organisations of the Arabian horse have decided to

recently, we were invited to take part in the 2020 Prague InterCup and the 2020 European Championship in the region of Prague, Czech Republic. In Italy, we took part in the 8th edition of |Purebred Arabian Horses in Bergamo. The coronavirus outbreak has disrupted the calendar for the 2020, but our community has been responding pretty well to the emergency, taking very seriously all precautionary and safety requirements.

cancel or to postpone many important shows to later dates. It is a great pity, but the world has never seen anything of this magnitude and people’s as well as horses’ health is, and must be, the number one priority. Since there were no particular restrictions for travelling inside Europe, we managed to participate in: the 2020 Menton Mediterranean and Arab Countries Arabian Horse Championship on the French Riviera; the 2020 Arabian Horse Days in Ströhen, Germany; the 2020 International Arabian Horse Championship on the Costa Brava, Barcelona, Spain; and more

We on the AHM team are very grateful for the support we have received from all the organizers, the sponsors, the owners, breeders, judges and handlers who travelled from afar to participate in the main shows programme. The authorities from Italy and other European countries like France, Spain, Germany and |Czech Republic have been very helpful organizing, promoting and hosting our beautiful shows and we are looking forward to working with them again in 2021

he 2020 Menton Arabian Horse Championship took place from 4th to 5th July at the picturesque Promenade du Soleil, Menton, France. Organized by the Association Promotion Cheval Arabe (APCA) led by Madame Christianne and Monsieur Jean-Pierre Chazel, the ceremony held on the exclusive French Riviera welcomed notable breeding programmes of the world breeding sector. Written by: Sonja Smaldone The Ismer Stud, ecstatically positioned on 200 hectares of grounds, in Ströhen, Germany, is the largest private Arabian Horse Stud in Europe. Approximately 50 mares and 10 stallions form the breeding stock of the stud. The history of the Ismer family can be traced back to the 13th century. For more than 60 years the family is attached to Arabian horses. The stud was founded with the purchase of the first pure-bred Arabian mare in the late 1950s by Rolf Ismer. The latter was also the founder of the famous Zoo. Since 1960s the Zoo and especially the stud farm grew up under the direction of his son Holger Ismer. Today, Dr. Nils Ismer is the owner of the Zoo and the Farm. The Zoo is just in front of his family house where the family loves to host friends and once a year this very interesting Arabian Horse Event, always peppered with special moments. It took us two days to go and find out the

beautiful animals who live in the ‘Tierpark’, visiting the area and attending the shows, in a cosy atmosphere made of joy, shared passion and renewed hope for the future of the breed. In the Zoo, we got struck by the presence of three magnificent specimen of Asiatic female elephants, trained by Mr. Elvis Errani, an expert animal trainer who boasts at his credit three generations of circus trainers. The International Days for Arabian Horses encompassed two shows: The C-European Show (ECAHO) starting on Saturday 11 of July at 8:00 am and ending on Sunday 12 of July at 16:00 with a Prizemoney sponsored by Europan Breeders Trust followed by the International B-Show (ECAHO) starting at 14.00 and ending at 16:00. For the two shows two different groups of judges coming from every part of the world were invited. The C-European Show was judged by: Dr. Aragno Gianmarco (Italy); Mr. Gear Eric

udging Arabian horses’ conformation takes practice, but anyone who has spent time around these beautiful creatures can learn to do it. Judges usually look for a combination of balance, structure, muscling, gait, and breed-specific features. For the 2020 Aachen edition, I had the honour to interview Dr. Gianmarco Aragno from Turin, Italy. He was pleased to walk me through the main aspects of his professional experience in judging Arabian horses. Hello Dr. Gianmarco Aragno. Just to set the scene with our readers, give us some background to you, to your family and education please.

My father was a vet and I’ve always wanted to be a vet since I was a kid. I did military service as a veterinary lieutenant where I had to take care of 180 mules. When I got back home, I had a trip to Poland and I bought 6 horses in 1974. Then I started with the jumping, the cross-country and then the races with Arabian horses. Later I became a professional trainer and continued with the racing until the racetracks in Italy closed down. When did you start getting interested in the pure-bred Arabian horse? Which are your favourite bloodlines? Why? I’ve been involved with Arabian horses since I was a kid. My favourite bloodline is the Polish bloodline because Polish have been breeding Arabian horses for three centuries and, until a few years ago, all Polish-bred horses

Held on the picturesque Costa Brava, this exclusive event for all Arabian horse lovers welcomed an amazing line-up of Arabians coming from Europe and Arabian countries. One restriction was that the number of the horses enrolled in the show by each of the farms could not exceed the 30% of the overall number of participating horses.

This was certainly the case of Royal Colours (True Colours x Xtreme Wonder), an extraordinary Straight Egyptian stallion who has strongly contributed to the enhancement of world breeding industry. HDB Shir Ibn Massai (Massai Ibn Marenga x Mayana) is certainly another pivotal stallion in the history of the Arabian horse, a great sire himself who is leaving outstanding quality progeny in Brazil. Last but not least, we need to mention Dominic M (Da Vinci FM x Rosa La Valentina), which has been efficiently managed by Noemie Zeller through an extensive and strong promotion, thereby offering many breeders a unique opportunity to introduce in their breeding program this amazing stallion, a choice that turned up to be crucial for Woody Arabians too. More recently, Noemie Zeller has acquired the owner-

ship of a new and important colt together with her friend Farhang Fazeli from Iran. This incredible horse is Berwaz Al Bustan, a young son by Fa El Rasheem and out of BS Noor, a gorgeous daughter by Royal Colors and out JJ Monalisa, one of the most beautiful matriarchs from the UAE, owned by Al Bustan Stables of the Taweedi family. Al Bustan is the name of the stables where Berwaz Al Bustan came to light surrounded by the loving care of his breeders and all the staff. As a foal, he was then transferred to Dubai Arabian Horse Stud where he was trained to participate in morphology shows, and his style and beauty have already conquered many arenas of the UAE show circuit. As for example the Bronze Champion Yearling title at the Emirates breeders Championship in 2018 out of 4 yearling colt classes. JJ Monalisa is a direct daughter to Magnum Psyche and out of the mare NV Angelica. When bred to Royal Colours, JJ AHM | 13

Monalisa bore BS Noor, a bombshell of beauty and genetic power. Once this powerful genetic pool was made available to FA El Rasheem, Berwaz Al Bustan came to life. Woody has been impressed by Berwaz Al Bustan ever since he was only a foal; this little gorgeous colt came to represent his secret dream in every way, to the extent that his wife Noemie and the Iranian breeder Fahrang Fazeli decided to take the next big step of buying him. The arrival of Berwaz Al Bustan in Italy brought everyone much joy. The beautiful colt was warmly welcomed in his new home by his new owners, but not only by them. Soon afterwards, Berwaz Al Bustan did catch the eye of famous Italian handler Paolo Capecci and the whole staff at the training centre. At his debut in Europe, Berwaz Al Bustan hit the arena at the 2020 Menton show, France, where he obtained the highest score among all the colts, and ranked ex-equo

with the first in class, then winning second place. On Sunday championships, Berwaz Al Bustan entered the arena with his high presence. In the expert hands of his handler |Paolo Capecci, he gave an excellent performance and was acclaimed Bronze medal, making Noëmie. and Farhang very proud as well as the whole family. After a couple of months, Berwaz Al Bustan confirmed his unrivalled morphological quality and amazing attitude at the 2020 Prague InterCup, Czech Republic, where he was crowned Unanimous Gold Medal Champion and cheered by the crowed. Now, Berwaz Al Bustan’s breeding career has begun, and his first crop of foals is expected for 2021. We wish all the breeders who believe in this young exotic colt, the very best and we can’t wait to see what comes next…

CONCLUSION:

Because of the unique circumstances surrounding the event, only a very few of us were able to attend. Those who could not attend the show, enjoyed very much the Arabian Essence TV live stream coverage. As a Press participant, Arabian Horse Magazine feels most accomplished when it can contribute something meaningful. For this show, to have been the first and a very good one after the world shutdown following the spread of Covid-19 pandemic, everyone had to bring their best in the arena, and outside as well. Surely, the Organizers worked tirelessly to ensure our safety and the smooth conduct of the show. Therefore, we extent to them our sincerest thank you and expressed our deepest gratitude to have been included. Quite probably, without their efforts no 2020 Menton Mediterranean and Arab Countries Championship would have been possible this year. From its part, Arabian Horse Magazine Team expects to see you again in year 2021, hopefully under better circumstances so to enjoy in full harmony the true spirit of this historical and unmissable rendezvous with the most beautiful animal in the world, the indomitable and charismatic Arabian horse.

CONCLUSION: This year too, despite the health crisis engendered by Covid-19 coronavirus, the town of Montefalco managed to celebrate the beauty and elegance of the Arabian horse in the picturesque surroundings of the Umbrian countryside, encircled by the green hills and lush colors of the finest vineyards of Sagrantino. We on the AHM team spent two marvelous days full of grace and sport, gorgeous food and wine and a strictly local hospitality. Therefore, congratulations to the winners and the organizers, to the judges, to the disciplinary commissioners and to the handlers who intervened but, first and foremost, congratulations to Mr. Roberto Ceccaroni and A.S.D.k Arabian Horse Events, in collaboration with the Municipality of Montefalco, which made considerable efforts for the preparation of this important morphology event in Umbria, despite the unique circumstances we are still experiencing due to the spread of the pandemic disease.

Gear Eric

CONCLUSION:

was a fantastic event despite the circumstances due to the spread of Covid-19 pandemic across Europe. As always, Mr. Nils Ismer has proven to be a great master of the house and a top-notch operative, committed to the success of the show and the dialogue among fellow breeders. Everything was studied in detail, but with ‘simplicity’, without distorting the true nature of the place. Every day and night a delicious lunch and dinner were offered at the special ‘Tierpark Restaurant’ to the guests. So, we want to thank him and his whole family for the warmth and kindness that made us spend for sure one of the most beautiful weekends of this show-season after the isolation period we all went through. There is no question – you simply must place this Event on your “Must see” agenda. To conclude, a special greeting and see you soon Ismer Family and again thanks for your hospitality from all of us in the Arabian Horse Magazine team.

With these beautiful awards proudly exhibited by the winners, the 2020 International Days for Arabian Horses in Ströhen drew to a close. This year, too, it

INTERVIEWED BY SONIA SMALDONE

udging Arabian horses’ conformation takes practice, but anyone who has spent time around these beautiful creatures can learn to do it.

AHM | 108

AHM | 109

Judge In were brought to the racetrack from an early age and so each horse had a solid structure and limbs and a great movement. These horses were not only beautiful, but also athletes and had a sportive attitude. When did you become a Judge? What specific preparation did you get? I became a judge around 30 years ago. I had no specific preparation, instead I built my knowledge on experience. Before becoming a judge, I used to go to each Arabian Horse event around Italy and I was involved with all type of horses. Then the Italian National Association of Arabian Horses (ANICA) asked me to become a judge of purebred Arabian Horses and I still am one nowadays. What do you feel has been your most rewarding experience as a judge? I have many great memories as a judge. First of all, the wonderful memories I share with my dear judge friends. One of my most rewarding experiences was AHM | 110

to have had the opportunity to judge the All Nations Cup in Aachen many times, that, to me, is the most beautiful show in Europe. What horse or horses have you judged that have left the greatest impression on you? Many horses have left me a great impression. One example could be the mares classes in Aachen some years ago: classes full of Polish mares, one more beautiful than the other, it was almost impossible to choose the best among them. Another horse I have been very impressed by is the beautiful Kwestura. What are, in your opinion, the strengths of the breed and how do you tackle the concepts of ‘beauty’ and ‘functional correctness’? The main strengths of the Arabian horses, in the first place, their intelligence, vivacity, courage and movement. The Arabian Horse is a horse that was used to improve other breeds and this says a lot. The beauty

nterview of a horse is a functional beauty: it is not a beauty for its own sake. Beautiful is the horse that works best and it is willing to do that and that is less likely to get injured. Which particular skills are necessary to become an accountable judge? First of all, it is fundamental to know a horse, to have been personally involved with horses for years and years and to

have ridden a horse. Riding is the only way to really know what movement is like. Then, it is important to have an anatomical knowledge of the horse, of what the functional parts are, such as the bones, the muscles, the tendons, etc. Last but not least, a judge needs to have the ‘eye’ for a horse. To be able to see if a horse is beautiful or not by just looking at it. AHM | 111

Judge In

This knowledge is impossible to get: either you have it inherently or you don’t. At least in Europe there have been some complaints about handlers/trainers abusing horses. Do you feel these are isolated incidents or do you feel they may be more widespread? Probably there are some handlers that use some unorthodox methods with horses. In my opinion, the best system to train a horse is the Polish system: they used AHM | 112

to train the horses since they were foals in a delicate and sweet way. In fact, horses that have been trained in Poland usually trust their handlers, seem to be relaxed and not scared of them while being shown. Do you think that the Arabian World has been a bit in a downtrend lately? Yes, the Arabian Horse world is for sure in a downtrend lately. The market is quite open only for top-class horses winning shows or for mares that have an impor-

nterview tant pedigree and a proven record as breeders. There is no market for average horses also because people, in Italy at least, don’t ride horses anymore. Abroad, where people ride more, there is market for geldings, stallions and mares that cannot aim for shows, even though the selling prices are not very high. Unfortunately, in Italy, people don’t ride Arabian horses much, besides those who do endurance or some aficionados. If you were empowered to effect change in the Arabian World, how would you go about it? Back to 20 years ago, the world of shows was completely different: small breeders used to take part in these shows, they used to breed their own horses and have fun and enjoy showing them in the competitions, regardless of the final result. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed. Nowadays there are too many financial interests, there is too much money involved and,

therefore, people and atmosphere are not as friendly and chilled as they used to be. Unfortunately, I think there is no way for this to go back to how it was because, as I said, there is too much money on the bill. Do you feel like leaving a message to the readers of this interview? The Arabian horse should be used more as a saddle horse to enjoy a ride with and as a friend too. People who are used to riding an Arabian horse cannot go back to another breed because it is the most intelligent, the smartest and most lively, and, in my opinion, the Arabian horse is the real saddle horse. Dr. Gianmarco Aragno, thank you very much for your contribution. It was an honour to interview you. May the Arabian horse cast a spell on us and keep us together forever and ever!

Interviewed by Sonja Smaldone

H

orse training and handling is a tough profession either for a man or a woman. However, Italian handler Roberto Ciregia is undaunted. His love for horses is overwhelming to the extent of spending twenty-four hours with the most elegant animal in the world. Roberto lives in Versilia where he owns and runs the CR Training Centre.

in 1998, with whom I participated in my first morphology contest. For some years now, I have owned a Training Center in my city, Massa, in the province of Massa Carrara, Tuscany. I work on the preparation of the Arabian horse for show purposes but, most recently, I have also been dealing with the saddled Arabian horse.

Hello Roberto. Just to set the scene with our readers, will you please give us some background to you, your family and education? Hello everyone! I am a professional handler and I have been passionate about the Arabian horse since 1994. I bought my first Arabian mare HK Starcita

How did the passion you have for Arabian horses begin? To what extent has the love you nurture for the Arabian horse affected your life? I have loved horses my whole life. When I was a kid, I used to spend entire days just watching and listening to my neighbours’ horses. Most probably, it is all due

AHM | 120

to my grandfather Armando: he too loved horses very much and owned some carthorses. I met the Arabian horse by chance, but it was love at first sight! One day, I went to the typical village fair where one can see horses. I was only a boy at the time. In that same year, big coincidence, they also organised a show-competition with beautiful Arabian horses, and if I am not mistaken, it was one of the first shows organized by Mr. Luciano Borzonasca. Later, this show became known to all as L’Arte del Cavallo that is traditionally held at Parco della Versiliana in Marina di Pietrasanta, Tuscany. From that moment on, I started dreaming about

showing Arabian horses. I knew I had a hard road ahead, but my fate was somehow sealed. It took me years of hard-work and self-sacrifice to get where I am now, but it was worth it since in the end my dream came true. Roberto, have you developed a systematic program for handling Arabian horses. Can you describe this program? How have your handling techniques evolved over the years? Any self-respecting training centre must necessarily have a clear-cut training/handling program and if it was just me, it would not have been possible to materialise all that. Therefore, I surrounded myself AHM | 121

with people of trust like my children and all the fellow-friends who are involved in this project. It all starts with good horse feeding and a specific training preparation of each of the horses according to the particular needs of each of them. Farrier and Veterinarian are also major figures in my type of program. Never mind if I repeat myself, but there you need a three hundred and sixty degree training/handling program. Being a handler also means that you have to keep up to date with trends and be always informed of the new techniques that have developed in the light of the new findings on horse behaviour. My professional career has begun with Frank Boetto with great development opportunities for me. To date Frank is still my mentor, and I always enjoy discussing with him about the Arabian horse and hearing to his words of advice. Is there a limit to what an Arabian horse can be taught through handling? Studies on horse behaviour are evolving at a fast-pace, therefore, also the handling techniques. When you are certain that you know the horses perfectly, then you might also argue that there is nothing else that a horse can be taught.

AHM | 122

What, in your opinion, really defines a good Handler? What do you need to become a successful one? A good Handler has a great support team around him and puts a lot of passion into the work he does, though this is not enough to become a successful Handler. There you also need a bit of luck, that is to say, successful horses. Roberto, how do you feel about the showing environment? Do the most deserving horses in terms of today’s standards really win at shows? Arabian Horses shows are my passion, the endless love of my whole life shot on a dark February day during ‘San Biagio Fair’ when I could watch my first show. You ask me whether or not the horses that win at shows are the most deserving ones. Well, yes, most of the times... though in a competition there can always be unpleasant surprises for everyone. We must bear in mind and understand that a

AHM | 123

morphology competition is a one where the judgment is expressed by an expert in the field, therefore, it is a subjective one. For this reason, a horse that looks ‘typey’ to a judge does not always look ‘typey’ to another judge. It is a competition in which the judgment is determined by the beauty of the horse and, fortunately or unfortunately, it depends on which angle you look at the animal, so the same horse is not always considered to be the best by all the judges. What are your favourite bloodlines? All the bloodlines of the Arabian horse are beautiful, but I can’t resist a flea-bitten grey Polish mare! Seriously, the Polish bloodline is the one that fascinates me the most.

AHM | 124

Which show have you been to as a Handler most recently? Share with us most exciting moments… Last July, I participated in the Menton show 2020. At this edition, there have been so many exciting moments, the competition was high as well as the will to win. Menton is a parterre with a particular charm whatever happens. How important are the Fairs of Arabian horses? They are crucial to me. As I have already said, I first met the Arabian horse at a village fair. In my opinion, the best way to introduce the Arabian horse to new people is to organize events during village fairs or horse fairs. How and where do you see yourself in ten years? I can’t really answer this question. My life has been a

roller coaster ride so I could be anywhere. Roberto, will you please leave a final message for the readers of AHM? The Arabian horse is our common passion, so it is our duty to make the most of him. As we all are in a period of stalemate, we ought to come together and find new ideas to advertise this wonderful animal and make him known to the general public through new initiatives. It would be nice to find the Arabian horse in the fairs with ridden competitions besides shows, so to make the Arabian horse known for what really he is: a beautiful horse, extremely intelligent and ductile. Thank you so much Roberto. Your words have touched us deeply. May all your dreams come true!

hen I was 3 years old, I met and touched a horse for the first time. Molly was a bay, thoroughbred polo mare with a half-moon shaped scar below her eye. I was mesmerized by how kind something so powerful could be. After that, horses were in my blood. I craved being near them and knew they would always have a place in my life. I grew up riding all types of horses in many equine sports. I fell in love over and over again with every breed I encountered, but none more than the Arabian horse.

W

As a teenager, I was able to realize a dream so many young children have: to own and ride a black Arabian stallion. RB CAVALIER, an Al Khamsa Arabian, entered my life and ignited a new obsession within me for the Arabian horse. Together we won numerous titles in competition, but at home I rode him everywhere bareback with a halter and lead rope. Sometimes, I rode him bridle-less and galloped the fields of my family’s farm freely. Cavalier’s beauty inspired others, thus he and

I modelled for various photographers, magazines, and calendars. My modelling career and my love for horses merged when he came into my life. Spending time with Cavalier made me wish I could share him with others and so a new dream came into view for me: breeding Arabian horses to share my love for them with the world. In 2008, right after I graduated from high school, my first foal was born. At that time, I began focusing heavily on purchasing the best mares I could find from a variety of bloodlines. I found myself bringing in top halter bloodlines, classic Polish athleticism, while maintaining the beautiful influences of Egyptian horses. While in college, we purchased the now 10x National Champion/Reserve National Champion AO Breeze+++// who is double Ansata Ibn Halima and Khemosabi through Kaiyoum. Our program MLM ARABIANS, which I share with my husband Ryan Moore, has evolved to focus on breeding horses that are competitive internationally in halter, but that also have the athletic prowess to compete at a national level in our performance competitions in the United States. We are entering our 13th year of breeding and are anxiously awaiting out 2021 foal crop. Our horses have captured titles at every major US show in both halter and many dierent performance divisions. We now have an incredible group of mares that we own or have embryos from including: ARIA TRESOR (Conquest BR x RH Triana by ROL Intencyty): Gold Champion Wold Cup, Gold Champion Breeders Finals, Reserve US National Champion, Silver Champion Scottsdale (embryo right)

value on the ability of the Arabian horse to form deep connections with their human counterparts. We personally spend time with each one of our horses to ensure that we never lose connection. It is important that we produce competitive, quality, beautiful individuals and it is even more important that we continue to produce loving companions. “WE LOVE OURSELVES IN THE THINGS WE LOVE. WE FIND OURSELVES THERE, TOO” (KRISTIN MARTZ). Nothing could be dearer to me than the portions of my life that I share with horses. My husband and I have wrapped our lives

around opportunities to enjoy our horses to the fullest: from modelling, to horse shows, to time at home raising our foals… we are never far from our passion. Follow us on social media under MLM ARABIANS to enjoy our adventures and watch for our upcoming superstars to be sired by some of our industry’s greatest sires as well as our own: EKS Alihandro, Rhan Al Shahania, Dominic M, Ajman Moniscione, Artemas GA, EKS Farajj, WGA Rokhan, AO Breeze, and more.

he eye is essential to present the daily truth of peoples and cultures from ancient countries in the company of horses that for them are the essence of life, because he was born into a land dominated by spicy odours and syncopated rhythms of music that resonated in the blazing skies of the African Continent, photographer Aubert Raynald is able to capture the unique beauty of people, animals and places with great care. His return to France led him to deal with photography inside both cultural and human-related contexts, as well as during sports events linked to different equestrian activities given that the breeding industry with the many horse breeds is something he is very familiar with. Over the years of professional practice, his pictures have seized extraordinary moments of truth wherever the horse is in motion.

Aubert Raynald sensitivity is perceived by all lovers of animal pictures, mainly of horses and, quite often, he is invited to decorate famous galleries around the world, when he exhibits his work, visitors are overwhelmed by the great delicacy of his shots that are often in black and white because they offer the best figurative representation dictated by his very personal choices. Always eager to travel to satisfy his quest for photographic reports that he loves to share with everyone, Aubert Raynald prepares a multifaceted retrospective of his work that will emerge as soon as the actual context becomes more apparent. All those who love the beauty expressed through the pictorial medium and photography are warmly invited to consult his website. It will not be a waste of time, but an enriching experience that will raise a gust of emotions.

Memories come and go, sometimes they come from afar, then there are memories that will never die. Nobody will ever forget Mr. Jacques Chalom des Cordes, a generous man with a deep understanding of Arabian horse breeding. In every decade throughout the centuries, irrespective of the country of origin, the Arabian horse and the related breeding activity have come across exceptional people very devoted to his cause, and who have marked the great history of this sector for almost half a century.

age thus, the static horse exhibited in his building, had to come alive. In 1965, he made contacts with a quite singular character who was worth knowing as he had lived in North Africa where he himself had been able to approach the pure-bred Arabian horses collected from the former Equestrian Establishments of the Protectorate. For many years, mainly in the nineteenth century and until the middle of the twentieth century, pure-bred Arabian horses – also known and classified as “Oriental Horses”- had been a prerogative of the ari-

The Chaloms had their pediment on Place Vendome in Paris right next to the most famous jewellers, they were one of the most illustrious families of antiques dealers of France, owners of a temple of objects of rare beauty, including many equestrian statues that adorned the entrance of this prestigious Art store. Jacques Chalom des Cordes had demonstrated particular interest in the living ‘things’ from a very young

stocracy, the French Emperor, he first owned very nice specimens that inhabited the Stables that he built nearby Les Jardins des Tuileries in Paris. Given that he belonged to the extremely wealthy France, Jacques Chalom des Cordes did not find it hard to come across an icon of the industry, the heroic Count Stephan Zamoyski who had participated at the operations of saving Janow Podlaski’s Arabian horses during the

Word War II. In 1967, Jacques Chalom des Cordes decided to build his own breeding program on the family estate in south France, at the foot of Mount Cordes, not far from Arles; the local climate was conducive to these enduring horses accustomed to the dry habitat of their country of origin. We need to know that the person being talked about donated an Arabian stallion “Coustignargue to the State of Israel, who was later renamed to Chalom, an act of great generosity that he made for very personal reasons.

The Haras de la Montagne des Cordes eventually became a reality with highly selected specimen coming from the Polish National Studs which, at that time, had not yet entered the spiral of the market economy. Among them, one could find subjects from the finest and most ancient bloodlines; truly one needed a gold mine to acquire one or more reproducers. Jacques Chalom des Cordes’studies led him to establish a breeding program that aimed to the homogeneity of the products inside the genetic

reservoir that he had available, and he managed to produce very correct horses, with a good back, a body structure in conformity with the breed standard, very good limbs, straight feet that are essential to support body mass, but also with a lot of Arabian type. The pure-bred Arabian horse, who dominates for his nobility, he argues, was not manufactured by the man, rather, it was domesticated by him, sometimes in a wrong way by intervening too much at the level of his use as a whole. He nostalgically remembers that at a time when he was trying to promote the Arabian horse and the exchange of knowledge and practices inside the sector, the horse

was a ward of the Haras Nationaux (French National Studs) in 1971, following a meeting with the official leaders, misters: de Poncins, de Castelbajac, Henry Blanc and BĂŠcheau La Fonta, Chalom des Cordes came up with the idea of creating the first National Breeders Association which gathered influential personalities of the sector, such as: Martine Cantrel, Marie Claire de Nervo, Albert Laredo and Pr. Dambrin. After making a list of all the breeders who owned Arabian horses, Mr. William Richardot de Choisey, a member of the foundation, offered to organize by himself a breeding contest in 1973 on the occasion of the 2nd Salon du Cheval in Paris held at Parc de Floral in Paris-Vincennes, this marked the first international event for the development of the Arabian breed opened to the general public, there were fifty-five participating horses from Germany, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland; a very good and promising beginning, but also a novelty that caused a sensation in the sector. From 1971 to 1981, Jacques Chalom des Cordes was President of the French National Breeders Association, he invested a lot of himself and of his private funds in the promotion of viable programs such as the Haras Nationaux de Pompadour which, in the central region, seemed appropriate to organize an event that could serve as an annual showcase of the breed; the principles of the 1st French Championship solely established by private intelligence were endorsed by the Administration, and each class of horses divided by age had to perform a ridden seAHM | 184

ries with three gaits, in other words, a beauty test. Each year at the Haras Nationaux de Pompadour and Tarbes, a Class Approval for candidate stallions could assign breeding authorizations for males of age three and over. It was a fair assessment made by nominated competent judges who did guarantee the good conformity of future reproducers. At present, Jacques Chalom des Cordes is very concerned about the future of the breed whose authenticity, physical appearance and legendary endurance, he warns, must be preserved and not changed; according to him, everyone should now understand that the preservation and survival of the breed for more centuries to come can only be possible with responsible leaders who must act ethically and must remain free from all compromises as well as from organizations that crystallize into much criticism. If it does not happen, the whole industry will come to an end. The Haras de la Montagne des Cordes of Jacques Chalom has recently stopped its breeding activity. Today, he owns fifteen specimens corresponding to his vision of the beautiful and genuine pure-bred Arabian horse, he keeps vibrant evidences and holds the esteem of the most important but also of the most humble breeders who have worked with him. We thank Jacques Chalom des Cordes for this precious and heart-warming interview. An important gift for future generations.

and owned by Al Shaqab Member of QF. and presented by Capacci Giacomo Arabians. Bronze medal winner, the grey Sahil By Kahil (Kahil Al Shaqab x Hassene By Hassan) bred and owned by Battisti Giuseppe and presented by handler Oberti Luca. SENIOR STALLIONS CHAMPIONSHIP Gold medal winner, the grey Medan Al Shaqab (Farhoud Al Shaqab x Abha Myra) bred and owned by Al Shaqab Member of QF. and presented by Capacci Giacomo Arabians. Silver medal winner, the grey Sultan Al Shaqab (Amir Al Shaqab x Abha Al Shaqab) bred and owned by Al Shaqab Member of QF. and presented by Capacci Giacomo Arabians. Bronze medal winner, the gray Shadi El Marwan (Marwan Al Shaqab x AP Shakira) bred and owned by Pastine Claudio and presented by handler Boscarino Andrea. SPECIAL TROPHIES The sole special trophy up for grabs was the 13th Bandola Cup reserved for horses with the name of the mare Bandola in their pedigree, and it was won by the already crowned Junior Bronze Medal Champion, the grey Sahil By Kahil (Kahil Al Shaqab x Hassene By Hassan) bred and owned by Giuseppe Battisti. CONCLUSION The organizers of Purebred Arabians in Bergamo worked well also this year, despite the restrictions placed by the pandemic. Promoberg Fair, La Rosa Bianca Equestrian Center, ANICA and ECAHO, all worked in synergy with a single common goal: to guarantee the continuity of an event that has been able to become a fundamental stage of the ECAHO circuit within a few years, and one of the few equestrian events on schedule in Italy and Europe. Arabian Horse Magazine was privileged to participate in the eighth edition of ‘Purebred Arabians in Bergamo’, spending two days fully devoted to the sport and the grace of gorgeous specimens. Therefore, it behoves us to thank, first and foremost, Promoberg Fair; thank you very much for inviting us, but above all, thank you for all the efforts you made to ensure that the show could actually take place. Furthermore, we want to thank all those who supported this important event, in particular: the Chamber of Commerce of Bergamo, the institutional sponsors such as: BPM Bank and UBI Bank; the Municipality of Zanica, Bergamo public transports and La Rosa Bianca equestrian club that accepted to host this beautiful initiative whole heartedly. Finally, we would like to congratulate everyone involved in the show: the winners, the judges, the disciplinary commissioners, the handlers, the photographers, the general secretariat and the entire Arabian Essence team. The next appointment is scheduled for year 2021. It will be another great experience in company of our beloved Arabian horse.

Interviewed by Sonja Smaldone A Stud manager oversees the proper care of horses, supervises employees, and maintains buildings and grounds. They may work in many facets of the equine industry. Showing, racing, breeding, and boarding operations generally have a stud manager to handle the care of the horses and management of employees. For the Aachen issue 2020, I had the pleasure to interview doctor Ahmed Elsawy from Egypt. He was happy to walk me through the main aspects of his profession as a manager and veterinarian at Alwakeel Stud.

Hello doctor Ahmed. Just to set the scene with our readers, will you please give us some background to you, your family and education? My name is Ahmed Elsawy. I’m 28 years old, I was born and raised in Port Said, a pretty small city in the North of Egypt located in the Mediterranean Sea. I’m the eldest out of a family of four children. I studied Veterinary Medicine at Suez Canal University in Ismailia, then I did my internship at the Equine Hospital in Cairo. I did some externships in different places as Bait Al Arab in Kuwait and Sharjah Equine Hospital in the United AHM | 270

Arab Emirates as being an equine veterinarian means you have to develop your skills constantly.

When and where did you first meet an Arabian horse? Who was he/she? I remember the first time I saw Arabian horses was at a Horse Show at Al Rabab Stud in Egypt in 2016. I was completely fascinated by and intrigued with the beauty of the horses as well as the atmosphere. That was a turning point for me personally, from then onward I knew all I wanted was to work with Arabian horses and wanted to work in environments like that. After that, Mr. Ahmed Abdelrazek gave me the chance to have training with Arabian horses at his Al Bawady Stud, while I was doing my internship. I learned a lot from Dr. Ivan Cintora originally from Argentina, who was working there and introduced me to veterinary work. In my vacations or free days, instead of going back home, I was going to join Dr. Ivan as much as I could to have more training with him. I’m always grateful to them for giving me this chance.

AHM | 271

The horses which I first met were: Wasfeya, Sarah and Tamim Al Bawady.

Tell us about early stages of your career inside of the Arabian horse industry. Since we didn’t have horses or large animals in my city, just the rural areas around it, I had to move to the city of Cairo. I started my career by working for charities and animal welfare with ‘Baladi’ horses as we call them in Egypt. In 2017, I started working as a resident at Al Farida Stud where I met the Icon Imperial Baarez. Working there gave me many openings and introduced me more to the equestrian community in Egypt. You can feel the truly love and passion to horses there and it was a great experience as I learned a lot from the other veterinarians there especially Dr. Rafael Leite. After that, I worked for Al Baydaa Stud as a resident too. It was a great experience where I could really see the quality of details. In 2018, I got the job offer from Alwakeel Stud, so I moved to Iraq and started this new challenge.

When and how did you become stud manager at Alwakeel Stud? I started working at Alwakeel Stud in 2018. They contacted me as they are the first official Stud in Iraq and they asked me to work with them. I was excited as it was going to be a new adventure and new experience. Also it was a big step for me because I started everything from scratch by myself in a different culture and a new market. What’s Alwakeel Stud’s vision and mission in the Arabian horse world industry? Alwakeel Stud is owned by Mr. Mohamed Hassan Alwakeel. He is a business man leading the aviation business in Iraq and working in the tourism industry as well. He has been passionate about horses since he was young. In 2017, he was in Egypt with some friends and got the chance to see some Arabian horses, since then he decided to follow his passion and he established the stud and started his journey as a breeder and his father supported and encouraged him to do that. It was very challenging as there were few registered horses in Iraq. As you may well know the lovely Iraq suffered a lot because of the wars and real hard time. Moreover, horses got stolen and eaten but also used by ISIS to escape, so most of the registe-

red and good horses in Iraq were victims. We would love to thank Eng. Omar Sakr, owner of Sark Arabians, Eng. Maha Ibrahim owner of Ezzaman Stud and the mighty breeder Mr. Hassanain Alnakeeb for all their efforts in supporting us to overcome the obstacles we encountered at the beginning and for their valuable advices. Last but not least, Sheikh Ahmed al Thani - owner of Al Waab Stud and Mr. Tareek Hamdy - owner of Al Farida – who helped us with their guidance and refinement of our collection. The idea of creating an Arabian horses stud in Iraq was very challenging and our goal was to restore the history of Iraq in this field, revive the Iraqi market, establish a good breeding program with different blood lines and produce high quality off-springs to compete internationally and see the Flag of Iraq flying high. As to start, we built one barn of 20 stalls, imported 9 Straight Egyptian horses from Egypt, then we got few more from Germany and The Netherlands, we started a small breeding program and we were lucky with the off-springs, so we managed to create a market in Iraq. Later on we made our expansion by

establishing more barns, bigger paddocks, more facilities and we imported more horses from Egypt, Qatar, UK, Belgium, Germany and U.S. Now, we own more than 60 horses and the size of our farm is around 16 hectares. Our vision is to spread awareness about the Arabian horses in Iraq and support the horse industry, equestrian community and new breeders in Iraq. We encourage them to own horses and help them establish their own breeding programs as for now the market in Iraq is still in it’s beginning compared to other Gulf countries due to shortage of registered horses but also the difficulties with importing and shipping since the price of shipping is relatively high. So, we took solid steps in making a unique program and supporting whoever wants to take his/her first steps with Arabian horses in Iraq. And maybe one day we’ll have a good influence on the breed worldwide. In the past two years, we have been working carefully on our breeding program and choices

of bloodlines to achieve producing correct refined horses and setting a plan to create a stud one of it’s kind in Iraq and lead the market there. With good contacts and social networking, Alwakeel Stud is getting to be known all around the world not just Iraq. We are establishing the first equine hospital in Iraq since forever. Inshallah, it will be fully equipped and meet the international standards and I hope that it will be ready by the end of the next year. We are also planning to establish the biggest horse club and riding school in in Baghdad and whole Iraq with jumping arenas, endurance and also arenas for Arabian horses shows. So, more people will get closer to horses and get used to deal with them and Inshallah it will have huge impact on the Iraqi community. I can tell that Mr. Alwakeel is influenced by Al Shaqab and Al Rayyan Studs and he is trying to follow the same steps. He is having huge respect to Sheikh Hamad al Thani and consider him as his idol. Hopefully, we would make huge difference in Arabian horse industry in Iraq and the Middle East.

Which bloodlines are mostly bred there? We did our best to different bloodlines as we wanted to start with a wide gene pool but with very refined selection of broodmares and breeding stallions out of Nagel through Qusar, and Birkhof Studs’ mares such as: Sakr, Al Farida, Ezzaman, Al Bawady, AlBadeia, Al Waab, Al Rayyan and many other studs had a great impact on our selection of broodmares. Do they own a special collection of mares and stallions? I believe we have some impressive collection. We own Aziim Al Amaar who is SE Gold Champion in Scottsdale 2020. We also have Moez Ezzaman, who is the unanimous Gold Champion Yearling Colt in Egypt 2018. He is going to compete internationally soon in his first appearance worldwide. Both are hosted and trained by Miles Buckley Training Center in England. We have our uprising star Noah O. by Naseem Al Rashediah and out of Nowara’s Glam by Kais Al Baydaa Dania Al Qusar by Majd Al Qusar out of Mawiia Al Qusar, who became the Silver Champion Junior Filly in her first appearance in Arabian Horses Show in Erbil 2019. Sana Ezzaman, the Unanimous Gold National Champion Yearling Filly at the Egyptian National Show 2018.

Last but not least, the filly who we believe she will leave a great impact on show-competitions and will represent our breeding program, her name is Meshmesha Alwakeel by Shahzad Ezzaman and out of NTK Mareya.

What are your primary responsibilities and duties as a stable manager in a normal week? As a veterinarian, I take rounds in the stables to check the horses, the beddings, the feedings and the water bowls. After that, I start with treatment of the sick horses if we have, and follow up with them. Reproduction work as follow up with breeding and the deliveries. We check the quality of food for horses and the quantity as I set the amounts by myself and the feeding time of each meal during the day. I check the paddocks and the stables. Checking vaccination time, de-worming programs, records and some office work. Managing the stables of Alwakeel Stud with professional standards is more than simply mucking stalls feeding I suppose... What are your priorities for presenting your stables to clients or outside visitors? Definitely, I started everything with Mr. Alwakeel from scratch and it’s wonderful to see the stud in its current state. We got to know the Iraqi market and young breeders’ interests with time, so we have a protocol with our guests as we take them for a round through the stables, around the paddocks and show them our off-springs, mares and stallions and help them AHM | 275

if they would want to buy and what would be the best for them to start with.

How do you orient a new stable employee who does not have advanced horse skills? It’s not a problem at all. They would learn with time as we have experienced head grooms and stable managers so they can teach them and follow up on their work. For me, I think what’s the most important is that the employees who want to work with horses should be horse lovers or at least have tenderness toward horses and would take care of them.

What becomes your priority when an important show is approaching? For the shows, we have to check which horses are ready physically and mentally as well. We start a special training with them and arrange feeding proAHM | 276

gram with the required supplements for the show. Check if they are healthy before the shows and that they are ready to compete.

Ahmed, what would you like to achieve by the end of this year? Our mares are about to give birth, so we can’t wait to see the off-springs and breeding decisions outcome. I want to end 2020 with all the horses in good health and achieve more success with more steady steps in all what we are doing.

How and where do you see yourself in ten years? I guess I would be here working with our 4th generation of horses. I would be married and have my kids playing around with horses.

In conclusion, will you please leave a message for the readers of Arabian Horse Magazine? First of all, I would like to thank you for the interview and giving us the chance to introduce ourselves to the equestrian community. For the readers of Arabian Horse Magazine, I will simply say be in contact with us, support us, come and visit us and let’s share our experiences and passion for Arabian horses and learn from each other.

Thank you very much for your precious contribution Dr. Ahmed Elsawy. May the Arabian horse continue to bring only great things in your life. Inshallah.
