AUTUMN EDITION 2022

Dear Breeders and Lovers of the Arabian Horse, Away from the hustle and bustle of the cities, and the summer heatwave, the Autumn editorial 2022 narrates a time in the countryside between carefreeness and nostalgia, surrounded by our beloved horses. It just soothes the soul to watch these beautiful creatures at pasture a few miles from our farms, and share with them the warm embrace of nature and its vibrant autumn colours. Let’s use this moment to ask for balance and peace to fill our lives. Media partner and promoter of a handful of well-organized competitions, Arabian Horse Magazine has made a name for

Marinello of TMA Arabians and young handler Giuseppe Baragiani, both from Italy. On the more artistic side, we are pleased to present the works by photographer Kai Shmidt from Germany, while all the beautiful horsewomen of this community will be happy to find again the Fashion Hub section with great ideas and suggestions to refresh our wardrobe with equestrian style clothing and accessories. Ilona Bax from the Netherlands is the exceptional equestrian model of this Autumn edition. On the more cultural side, Domenico Tocchi has provided us with the second part on the Egyptian Dam of Distinction Nagdia (1956), and long-time

itself since the beginning of summer 2022. In Italy, we have inaugurated the show season early in June with Vesuvio Trophy 2022 organized by breeder Donato Prisco on his magnificent equestrian facilities in south Italy. We had the privilege to take part in Menton Mediterranean and Arab Countries Championship 2022 on the French Riviera in late June. Then, we have flown to Jordan for the Jordan Bred Show 2022 and a relative horse auction held at the end of July. To follow, the Prague InterCup 2022, in late August, Bergamo Purebred Show and Straight Egyptian Championship in September that concluded the show-tour. We have welcomed a great deal of fruitful outside collaboration, which has produced interesting articles that you will find inside this number with first-class photography and eye-catching graphics. Among the guests, we have hosted onboard: judge William Oppen from Argentina, breeder Tonino

friend and writing contributor William Richardot de Choisey has blessed us once again with unedited cultural and historical essays on the Arabian world. The Magazine is deeply indebted to all of these people for their quality work, passion, and elegance. Therefore, we cannot help but express our gratitude to them. Remember. Autumn is a time of acknowledging our life cycles of growth, harvest, death and rebirth just as we see in nature. Autumn is the time of year to make room for what’s to come in the next year. This is the time of year to go within and empty out space, letting go of old ideas and using the energy to make new creative visions. Take this autumn equinox to become silent and rest, allowing space for your greater breeding visions to emerge. “Look inward, your truth can be found in your heart.”

INDEX foal of impressive quality was expected when Dubai Arabian Horse Stud bred their home super sire D Seraj (FA El Rasheem x Ladi Veronika) to the exceptional mare Rah Rosalia (2011) (Rahere x RA Khansuela). However, when D Beisan came into being in 2020, they realized she was beyond expectations and would quickly win the hearts of many prominent stakeholders. In this regard, they were also right! Her pedigree, influenced by some of the greatest American, Polish, Spanish, and Egyptian bloodlines, has enabled her to Written By Sonia Smaldone Photos By Gregor Aymar D Seraj Fa El Rasheem X Ladi Veronika Rahere Ra Khansuela 024 D Beisan Born in the south of the Netherlands, grew up with common sense and a no-nonsense attitude. think best describe myself as a person with integrity, and hard-working, love a good joke, like to think I’m pretty tough but am also very sensitive. At our farm Just Arabians, I spend all of my days taking care of approximately 20 horses, 5 rescue dogs, cats and little sparrow that we saved that keeps coming back lol. My partner Matt is the most patient man with a heart of gold and couldn’t do it without him. Our whole life revolves around Arabian Horses. Whence this love for horses? When have you first met an Arabian horse? As long as I can remember from very young age I was obsessed with horses. Any spare time had was spent at the local riding school and worked there during the holidays from early in the morning until five on the weekends, in exchange for riding lessons. did anything to be with the horses, have ridden since the age of 5 and as my mother was a single mother with 3 kids we were unable to afford a pony so begged, borrowed and worked for rides on any and every horse I could. Usually, this meant the naughtiest and most difficult horses got to ride. My commitment and determination paid off over the years and I got better horses to ride. Eventually, got myself a job with famous Grandprix rider where got the op portunity to ride top schooled horses. After working for a few more trainers became a base rider for top-quality Warmblood stable until in 2006 my fire for the Arabian was ignited. It was then got to train an Arabian stallion and I got hooked immediately on this highly intelligent breed. I saw an opportunity to stand out from the crowd, as there are dozens of Warmblood riders, but not many high-level Arabian riders. I threw myself into developing a deep understanding of this breed, and over the years have perfected my technique in training them. This resulted in winning numerous prizes and titles in many disciplines, with dif ferent horses, mainly stallions. All these wins such as times Dutch National Champion, Gold European Champion and 2 times European Reserve Champion Ridden Class, times top All Nations Cup, Aachen, Arabian Futurity Gold Champion had earned us a Sports Award by the ECAHO. 076 Ilona Bax tries Arabian Horse Championship mar ked the beginning of the summer show season at an international level. A judge usually looks for a combination of balance, structure, muscling, gait, and breed-specific characte ristics. Mr William Oppen from Argenti na is the subject of my interview for the Autumn issue of 2022. I appreciated his taking the time to walk me through some of the main aspects of his professional experience judging Ara bian horses. Hello, Mr Oppen! appreciate you accep ting our invitation so graciously. Tell us a little bit about you, your family, and your education to help set the stage for our re aders. It is an ancient activity deeply rooted in the cultures of the peoples involved, primarily from Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey. With its codes, it was taken to the heights mainly by great female artists as an art practically elevated to the level of the divine, as well as linked to the earth and fertility, evoking motherho od, as well as esotericism sometimes closely linked to religion. As a rule, oriental dance comes mainly from Egypt. It is often a fema le activity with lascivious gestures and improvised body bewitching spread throughout the Near and Middle East. Several oriental dance styles exist, including Raqs Sharqi, which has been influential in the West. Furthermore, Baladi - classical dance usually accompanied by full orchestra, a choreography, and the very popular Shaabi. Here are a few more folkloric ones: SAÏDI - a dance from the region of Saïd in southern Egypt, simula ting the fight of men; FELLAHI- peasant dance; BAMBOUTI dance of the fishermen mimicking the collection of nets; ESKANDARINI OR MELEYA/ALEXANDRIA REGION is very feminine with a lot of expressions, women with sequined dresses; TENOURA is an expressive and impressive dance often performed during traditional religious ceremonies. A dancer performs gyratory movements on himself, such as the whirling Dervishes, KHALEEGI/MIDDLE EASTERN DANCE Here the female dan cer must have long hair. generation. Conversely, less do we know about her very peculiar dam line. A quick search reveals that D Beisan’s dam is the mare Rah Rosalia, sired by Rahere, a stallion imported to the U.S. from Australia. Rosalia’s dam is the gorgeous Khadraj NA’s daughter RA Khansuela. Khadraj NA daughters are known not just for their show successes but also as outstanding breeding mares. Rosalia was herself a champion filly. She began her show career as a weanling at the 2011 Arabian Breeders Finals, Scottsdale, Arizona, where she was named Gold Champion Weanling Filly in a very impressive group. Rosalia returned to the Arabian Breeders Finals, Scottsdale, Arizona, in 2012 as a yearling and repeated her victory, winning Gold Champion Junior Yearling Filly. Like her dam, D Beisan is an ideal show filly with outrageously good looks and moves. She is always eager to please and ready to put on a great performance for the judges. As a yearling, she took the Arabian horse world by storm as she got crowned:

- Gold Champion at Emirates Arabian Horse Breeders Championship 2021

- Gold Champion at Abu Dhabi International Arabian Horse Championship 2021

- Gold Champion at World Arabian Horse Championship 2021, Paris

D Beisan was triumphant, and her team couldn’t have been more pleased. She quickly climbed up the ladder and showed the industry that she was a force to be reckoned with. At two years old, D Beisan is looking stunning. It is decided that she will get shown at the Dubai International Arabian Horse Championship 2022, where she was Gold Champion Medal. She repeated the victory at the Mediterranean and Arab Countries AHC - Menton 2022 and won Gold Champion Junior Fillies Championship and Best Head in the show. During the qualifying classes, D Beisan and her handler Paolo Capecci ignited the ring. She bounced around that arena with her tail up, her snort-andblow attitude on full display; she seemed ready for her spicy dance!

On championship day, she brought nothing less than her own supreme elegance and fantastic moves. Her silhouette and stand-up were exceptional. Both the judges and the crowds knew that this was their superstar champion.

D Beisan is a perfect example of a filly that should do it all performance and breeding.

From the Mediterranean and Arab Countries AHC 2022, D Beisan has been acquired by Al Shaqab Stud, Qatar. As a result, she has had to take on a new challenge. A challenge that D Beisan is more than willing to accept!

There is hardly any more beautiful summer showplace than that of Menton. Perched abo ve the sea, dominated by the facade and the belfry of a baroque church marvel, protected by the sword of the statue of Saint-Michel and covered by the blue sky, the show has been wel

Who is Ilona Bax?

Born in the south of the Netherlands, I grew up with common sense and a no-nonsense attitude. I think I best describe myself as a person with integrity, and hard-working, I love a good joke, I like to think I’m pretty tough but I am also very sensitive. At our farm Just Arabians, I spend all of my days taking care of approximately 20 horses, 5 rescue dogs, 2 cats and a little sparrow that we saved that keeps coming back lol. My partner Matt is the most patient man with a heart of gold and I couldn’t do it without him. Our whole life revolves around Arabian Horses.

Whence this love for horses? When have you first met an Arabian horse? As long as I can remember from a very young age I was obsessed with horses. Any spare time I had was spent at the local riding school and I worked there during the holidays from early in the morning until five on the weekends, in exchange for riding lessons. I did anything to be with the horses, I have ridden since the age of 5 and as my mother was a single mother with 3 kids we were unable to afford a pony so I begged, borrowed and worked for rides on any and every horse I could. Usually, this meant the naughtiest and most difficult horses I got to ride.

My commitment and determination paid off over the years and I got better horses to ride. Eventually, I got myself a job with a famous Grandprix rider where I got the op portunity to ride top schooled horses. After working for a few more trainers I became a base rider for a top-quality Warmblood stable until in 2006 my fire for the Arabian was ignited.

It was then I got to train an Arabian stallion and I got hooked immediately on this highly intelligent breed.

All these wins such as 4 times Dutch National Champion, Gold European Champion and 2 times European Reserve Champion Ridden Class, 6 times top 5 All Nations Cup, Aachen, Arabian Futurity Gold Champion had earned us a Sports Award by the ECAHO.

Tell us everything about your current occupation at Just Ara bians. How did it all start? Who else is involved in the busi ness?

After training horses for clients for several years we found that it was time for our own facility.

My partner Matt Smith pointed out a little boutique farm in the south of the Netherlands. At the start, I had reservations because it was further away from my friends and family and the farm wasn’t set up as a horse business yet. However, after some persuasion from Matt’s side we ended up viewing the property and as soon as we turned on the drive I JUST knew it was JUST perfect.

Two years further and with much blood, sweat and tears we managed to turn the farm around to a successful horse busi ness. Just Arabians are now fully established as a breeding, training and sales centre with numerous clients worldwide. Being a small but selective horse-breeding operation as we are our focus is on quality, By necessity, we take a personal, hands-on approach to every foal we breed, and we focus a tremendous amount of care and attention on the individual ne eds of each horse in our care.

What bloodlines do you breed at Just Arabians?

Like many in the horse world, I believe that a great breeding program comes from great mares.

So when I plan to breed, I look at the strengths and weaknes ses of each mare based on what I hope to produce. I research what these bloodlines have produced and if they will fit my expectations.

My philosophy is not focussed on particular bloodlines, howe ver, I like the mixture of solid older blood combined with the modern-day lines.

Who is the cornerstone stallion of your breeding program? And your foundation mares?

Just Arabians have evolved in quality since purchasing the bre eding stallion Wadi Kahil. WADI KAHIL is without a doubt a son of the legendary World Platinum Stallion Kahil Al Sha qab.

With his flamboyant carriage and mind-blowing elastic move ment, Wadi Kahil is a head spinner everywhere he goes. Bred by the famous Michalow stud in Poland Wadi Kahil succes sfully raced for four seasons to then be schooled as a succes sful show halter horse. In the show ring, Wadi captivates by his commanding charisma and magical connection with his

AHM | 78

handler.

In a trend focused on a dish and face, Wadi Kahil is one of the very few stallions in our breed that is not lacking in type but still has incredible athletic move ment, strong legs and super body. This is a stallion that

bodies, and elastic movement, but also temperament play a huge role in our selection. As a rider, I still want to be able to work with an eager-to-learn, calm and collected horse. Not all offspring make it to a top show or breeding horse and will end up with amateur riders, so good character is very important. Basically, all of our horses have done well in the show or riding ring.

Do you also offer trai ning facilities? What other services do you provide on the farm? The main focus at Just Arabians is on our bre eding program. As we are a small facility we like to keep our stan dards high, therefore we only have a limited amount of boxes avai lable for training hor ses.

is bringing back some balance in modern-day bree ding! In the early beginnings, Just Arabians made seve ral important purchases to start our breeding program on a high note. This includes a top-quality heterozygote black mare by Magic Magnifique. In 2021 she gave us a stunning black filly by Avatar AT we named Just Mon rose.

Monrose is for sure one of the most exotic black fillies in the industry at this time. She will re main at Just Arabians to follow in her mother’s footsteps as a fu ture breeding mare. For 2022 we are expecting a foal from Magic Monroe by the fa mous El Rey Magnum and are very excited about this extraor dinary combination!

Besides black mares, we have some exquisite foundation ma res with bloodlines leading to Ajman Moniscione, BJ Thee Mustafa, True Colours, Justice and Mono gramm and of course our own stallion Wadi Kahil (Kahil Al Shaqab x Wadi Halfa by Ekstern).

All are selected for beauty, strong

We feel very privileged to train Arabian horses from all over the world for many great bree ders. More and more people see the value of their horses being ridden and find their way to our fa cility.

Besides training, we offer to board sales horses. We take care of the whole sale process for the owner. This inclu

des marketing, communication and showings. We also have horses in mediation on our website and we offer a high-end quality of our private sale list.

Which Arabian Horses’ Show is your favourite? Why?

Oh, a difficult question to answer as all shows have a different ambience. The ALL NATIONS CUP in Aachen is definitely one of my favourites as this is one of the few last shows that combi nes show and riding.

Also, we had an amazing time at the Sopot Arabian Horse show this year where we experienced an old-school show that was all about friendship in the Arabian horse community.

Have you competed in one of the shows held in Europe most recently?

On 23rd and 24th July at the III Sopot Arabian Horse Show, we brought along our stallion Wadi Kahil and he achieved specta cular success. On the lead of Tom Oben, our charismatic stal lion and his wonderful performance enchanted not only the audience but also the international panel of judges. On Satur day afternoon, Wadi won his class with 92.45 points (highest

scoring stallion), including 2×20 for type and 3×20 for movement, and on Sunday he became Gold Champion Se nior Stallion. Also, we joined the Arabian Futurity Europe show one week later in Ger many in the ridden Masterclasses.

Wadi Kahil made his debut in the dressage ring with me and became two times Bronze champion. This stallion proves again the Ara bian can do it all!

Ilona, what else do you do when you’re not with your hor ses? Any particular hobbies?

I do not understand this question (laughs)

My biggest and only hobby really is horses and dogs (we have 5 rescue dogs).

In all seriousness, there is not a whole lot of spare time when you own horse business. Matt and I like to make time for each

AHM | 81
AHM | 82

other and go out for a nice meal every now and then to discuss horses’ business (laughs).

From riding boots to high heels. What is femininity to you, Ilona?

Riding boots are the pillars of hard work and the everyday grit that leads to success. They have also become an icon of sexuality, although as equestrians we view them as tools rather than a repre sentation of fashionable trends.

High heels come in many forms - from shorts to stilettos, they change with our mood. No matter the heel, femini nity is rather the authenticity of being female and nurtu ring ourselves, those around us and the goals we have determined.

Who is your favourite photographer? And fashion designer?

Photography is a very subjective topic. I admire the strength of a photographer to portray women as the embodiment of power, hu mility and nurture. There are many great photographers of women as power figures - Helmut Newton, Peter Lindbergh and Ellen Von Unwerth - each with their own interpretation of how women are pillars of strength and determination. Fashion design also tends to celebrate the male representation of women. I admire those that have carved out a space for women without bowing to the traditional mo del society places upon them. Celine, Hermes and Yves Saint Laurent are figureheads of clean lines, strong silhouettes and female equestrian power.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Five years down the line I see myself in a position with improved knowledge and achieved bigger goals with our farm and offspring. I hope to develop and refine our breeding program and for our offspring to be successful in many different areas. Perhaps in the future, I may consider taking on a judging course, but for now, I like to participate myself still.

Ilona, what’s something you want less of in your life? What about more? Although I am not naïve that you can hide from reality… I would like to see less news. There is so much going on in the world that I can’t keep up with and is making me sad. What I want more in life is easy to answer: MORE Arabian horses!

Is there anything else you would like to tell the readers of Arabian Horse Magazine?

We like to connect with the readers of Arabian Horse Magazine! Share our Arabian Horse adventures and add us on social media: Instagram | ilonabaxarabianhorses Facebook | JustArabians www.justarabians.com

Sometimes in life you just feel you must, with no explanations for why, do something. This happened with Bahar El Lawrence.

We had such an explosion of emotions and happiness after welcoming Batistah to our family, and again when her daughter, Soleada Le Soleil, arrived, that when we saw Bahar, out of Batistah and by the magnificent Lawrence El Gazal ... we couldn’t let her go.

The art of judging Ara bian horses’ conforma tion and movement takes some practice, but anyone who has spent time with these beau tiful creatures can learn.

I appreciate you accep ting our invitation so graciously. Tell us a little bit about you, your family, and your education to help set the stage for our re aders.

I was born in Argentina in 1964 and gra duated from Veterinary School in 1989 from North East National University. I am married with Gladis, and I have two kids, one boy William Jr and one girl Carolina,

both at University.

When did you start getting interested in the pure-bred Arabian horse? Immediately after graduating from Vete rinary School, I started working at Zichy Thyssen Arabians in Argentina, which led me to learn about Arabian horses. Count Federico Zichy Thyssen has been an inter national breeder and great master for over forty years. I started as a farm Veterinarian and soon moved up to the Farm Manager position, which I have held for almost twen ty years of my life between two periods with him.

AHM | 87

At what age have you become a judge? What specific preparation did you get?

I passed my judge exam in 2007 in Brazil. Over these years, I have worked with Ara bian horses, attended shows internationally, and visited other breeding programs around the world to prepare myself. To be a judge is more formal than what we do in our daily basis work. I mean looking, assessing, and qualifying horses at the farm at any time.

What are, in your opinion, the strengths of the Arabian breed? How do you tackle the concepts of ‘beauty’ and ‘functional cor rectness’?

First I believe that an Arabian horse is the most beautiful of all breeds, no doubt! No other horse breed has the attitude of pride to show itself in the way Arabian horses do. The harmony in an Arabian horse with the small wide-dish head, with big black eyes showing intelligence, big round nostrils, ar ched- long neck, short back, strong croups, and correct and properly built legs to run for miles adding incredible stamina, make an Arabian such a breed on its own.

Which horse or horses have you judged that have left the strongest impression on you? Why?

I can’t think of only one. I have seen many great horses in my life, judging or attending shows or visiting other farms. However, to answer your question, a young colt captured my heart. It was in Cape Town,

South Africa, judging the show. It was EKS Alihandro, a yearling at that time, the way

he showed himself with extreme attitu de, full of energy and charisma im pressed me a lot, and I knew he could be a great horse shortly.

AHM | 88

What do you feel has been your most recent rewarding show as a judge?

Just being an international judge is a reward itself for me! It’s not possible to think about one show. I had the honour to be part of the judging panel in highly prestigious shows, to name a few, Brazilian Nationals, Abu Dhabi (with 758 horses), Aachen and, la tely, Menton. I don’t want to forget smaller shows. But close to my heart, like Prado in Montevideo, Uruguay, Colombia Nationals, Cape Town (South Africa), and other Bra zilian shows. I have seen beautiful horses in all of them, a pure pleasure to my eyes.

What particular skills are necessary to be come an accountable judge in front of the public?

I believe honesty is the most crucial skill, then knowledge and experience through the years as a judge and seen many horses during my working life.

How has the global health crisis affected the Arabian horse industry? Has it affected your job?

Well, I guess the global health crisis has affected all businesses, sports, and regular life. No shows or other horse events could get held during the pandemics. In my case, I spent the health crisis working in my actual

AHM | 89

position as Manager of Al Ghanayim Stud in Kuwait.

Mr Oppen, are you also a breeder? If yes, tell us a bit about your breeding program. Which bloodlines do you breed? Why?

During my working years, I have intervened in breeding decisions at the places where I worked, at Zichy Thyssen Arabians, then Al Shaqab Stud (almost nine years), and now at

Al Ghanayim Stud.

I like Straight Egyptian lines, and all related lines to Gazal Al Shaqab and Marwan Al Shaqab mixed with Russian/Polish lines from Padron, Magnum Psyche and others.

I have two mares in Argentina bre eding with El Shaklan’s grandson. I hope they will work well.

In 2023 and 2025, the World Ara bian Horse Championship will be held in Qatar. How do you feel about this?

I don’t have an opinion on this matter. I guess life evolves, and the Arabian horse in dustry constantly looks for the best interest. We must wait and see the outcome of this new experience that will be the World Ara bian Horse Championship held in Qatar.

AHM | 90

What else would you like to accomplish at this stage of your career? How do you picture your future, Mr Oppen?

I feel very accomplished with my career in the Ara bian horse industry. I love what I do as a Veterina rian/Manager. I worked for prominent breeders such as Count Federico Zichy Thyssen and Al Sha qab Stud, and I am trying to help Al Ghanayim Stud in Kuwait scale to the next level. I hope to succeed in this new goal, and then I hope to get more invitations to judge at international shows, which always makes me very happy.

Thank you very much, Mr Oppen! Wishing you all the best on your journey

By representing varied scenes of everyday life, interiors of harems, local or tribal characters, falcon hunts, and the multitude of landscapes ranging from deserts to oases, Orientalist painting is not the expression of a style, from a movement emanating from a school of painting reserved for gi ed aesthetes.

An interest appeared in the West around the 19th century, whose exuberant themes will serve those who became great masters of the brush, charcoal, pencil, or sculpture in some heyday, later becoming ethnographic and less idealised as time passed.

e regional political circumstances of the African continent, in particular, of the countries of North Africa, changed in their time both the modes of stay of renowned painters, o en leaving along with the rich collections of paintings to a method marked by the use of warm colours and striking contrasts of light. For some, Orientalism originated from the discovery of Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Lower and Upper Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia, all for the happiness of future generations who, for a time, can know their histories.

His career centred on the Orient, his dearest theme. For nearly thirty years, he froze on the canvas the life of the natives. However, one could notice the in uence of the Grand Master of Orientalism, Jan-Lèon Gérôme. But also of the painter J.F Lewis, who mastered the genre ‘domestic’, so popular in the Middle East.

*ITALY HERMAN DAVID SOLOMON CORRODI

Born July 23, 1844, in Frascati, he was a painter with academic training. He studied this personal art in Geneva with his brother Arnaldo. Under the successive directions of Jacques Alfred van Muyden and Alexandre Calame, Corrodi became a privileged supplier of the Court of England. He remains one of the great painters chosen by the German aristocracy. Like all the aesthetes of his time, he travelled to Syria, Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries to be in tune with the times. For the integrity of his work, he received the honorary title of “Academic of Merit” from the Accademia di San Luca (Academy of St. Luca).

A CONVERSATION WITH

RIDA RIDWAN SOUDI

In a location simply unique and elegantly decorated in Jordanian style, Rida Ridwan Soudi has succeeded in catalyzing in Amman a large number of breeders and enthusiasts of the Arabian horse who have all enjoyed a spectacular first edition of the Jordan Bred Show and the rich related auction.

After the events, he takes us and the judges on a fantastic journey in the surroundings of Amman, including a tour of the archaeological site of Petra and the salted Dead Sea area. I interviewed Rida before we left Jor-

or just a hobby?

It all started as a hobby actually in 2011 when I bought my first Arabian horse in Jordan, and it won a medal in a horse championship in the Middle East. Enthusiastically, I started my own horse farm in Egypt with a count of eight horses at the beginning and kept this business running back and forth between Jordan and Egypt. Today, I am a proud owner of twenty horses in Jordan and twelve in Egypt.

How did you start working on the Jordan Bred Show 2022?

dan about how he came up with the idea to start a show about empowering women in Jordan.

Who is Rida Ridwan Soudi?

Rida Soudi is a Jordanian self-motivated Arabian horse owner and breeder with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting. Soudi is characterized by his success in the trade and jewellery business. Nevertheless, he is also a loving husband and a caring father.

When did you first become involved in the Arabian horse industry? Are Arabian horses your primary occupation

It was assigned to start after a meeting with a number of breeders in Jordan, and there was a need for a pure Jordanian Bred show. It thankfully got the approval last year. Therefore, the first Jordanian Bred show started in 2021, followed by a bigger event that took place in 2022 that gathered all Jordanian breeders and had all kinds of fine locally-bred horses.

What was the best part of your job as the show organizer? What was the most challenging part? The best part was the number of acquaintances everyone delightfully

made within the Arabian Horse breeders community from locals and our event guests from all around the world. On the other hand, it was challenging to find sufficient sponsorships and

Empowerment of Women as the leitmotif of the Jordan Bred Show 2022?

What are the real reasons behind this project?

guarantee a high-quality level show. Gratefully, I am not one to give up after all of this hard work, so with the help of my team, I succeeded in that too, giving our audience an outstanding event.

Do gender inequalities still exist in Jordan?

Activating the role of women in this field was a necessity for me for a good while, because of the absence of the untapped potential that women have to

Rida, the question I bet everybody would like to ask you is why choose

offer in this particular area. Admiring the fact that Europe has more than 70% of its breeders from women, we are on

a quest to engage more of the feminine energies in breeding and to encourage them to have their own farms. We believe that this is a family project not to be monopolized by men only. Seeing how successful and powerful Jordanian women are in many different fields and positions encouraged us to invest in their capabilities in breeding and participating in Arabian horse contests as well.

Did you have a good time after the show? We’d like to know a bit more about the tour you organized around Jordan for the selected group of guests.

Wonderful times were well-spent on our tour starting from Amman and going through the Dead Sea, Wadi Rum, Petra, and finishing off with Aqaba. My plan was to invite our guests to form a great impression of the beautiful sites here and to reflect on the remarkable wonders my country has among its landscapes. More and more of these events and tours will also be discussed and planned for. How many female Arabian horse breeders are there in Jordan today? So far there is one. However, she’s one of the most famous and influential female breeders around the globe (prin-

cess Alia Bent Al-Hussein), and she provides major support for our campaign constantly pushing us toward success. We are expecting more female presence to be joining the Arabian horse community.

Will we ever see a second edition of the Jordan Bred Show?

One certain thing is the inevitability of the continuity of these kinds of shows, for we are planning next on a bred

What do you still want to achieve for your career?

My vision is to create an association for empowering women worldwide to be able to breed horses, participate in bred shows, and become more active and effective in the Arabian horse community internationally in general and around the Arabic world in particular.

Will you please leave a message to the readers of Arabian Horse Magazine?

show between Jordan and Palestine in the near future. Soon enough to be followed by another one across the Middle Eastern region. Our goal is to organize and host an international bred show that gathers every breeder who wants to represent their country’s bred horses and create the perfect environment for their growth.

Rida, what are the “secrets” to your success?

People’s support is key! It cannot be done without their help. I owe it to my family and to all those who believed in me, pushed me forwards, and stood with me even in the rough times.

Firstly, I would like to thank the Arabian Horse Magazine for being the best in the professional media coverage of all horse-related events in addition to their great support for me. Moreover, I’d like to advise all the readers of this esteemed magazine to support it and reinforce the concept of Arabian horse breeding and draw attention to the importance of empowering women to be a part of this community.

Pictures - Private Collections isleadingly called belly dancing in reductive terms, Oriental dance affirms a culture practised for centu ries in the Arab-Muslim world.

Furthermore, Baladi - a classical dance usually accompanied by a full orchestra, a choreography, and the very popular Shaabi. Here are a few more folkloric ones:

SAÏDI - a dance from the region of Saïd in southern Egypt, simula ting the fight of men; FELLAHI- a peasant dance; BAMBOUTI - dance of the fishermen mimicking the collection of nets; ESKANDARINI OR MELEYA/ALEXANDRIA REGION is very feminine with a lot of expressions, women with sequined dresses; TENOURA - is an expressive and impressive dance often performed during traditional religious ceremonies. A dancer performs gyratory movements on himself, such as the whirling Dervishes, KHALEEGI/MIDDLE EASTERN DANCE. Here the female dan cer must have long hair. She wears an abaya she can play with; DEBKE - a dance called ‘foot tapping’ originates in greater Syria, that is to say, more precisely from Jordan. It is the man wearing boots and a rolled-up scarf.

Several performance venues for this art sprang up in Egypt during the twenties. In Cairo, renowned Syrian actress and dancer BADIA MASABNI, and classical ballet graduate Samia Gamal, became very popular. By moving her pelvis, Samia applied very oriental gestu res to the jerky or slow rhythms of the music.

SAMIA GAMAL was in high demand by a public that didn’t hesita te to fight for tickets to attend her performan ces in the best locations in the city, including the Opera Casino, opened in 1925 by Badia Ma sabni. We should also mention Tahiyya Ca rioca (Badaweya Moha med Karim Ali Elnidani), NEIMA AKEF, SOHAIR ZAKI, FIFI ABDOU, AND NAGWA FOUAD, who participated in the golden age of Egyptian art cinema continued to exercise until 1980.

For decades, there was no codified choreography, only the oral tradition and examples of famous dancers remained for this adored dance. Loved, but sometimes considered too capti vating for men. In moving away from the sacred, those practices offered the widest choice of attendance. In the 1950s, the very famous actress Gina Lollo Brigida achieved immense fame for her appearance as a belly dancer, her photos being out of print.

During Bonaparte’s time in Egypt, Europeans from a prudish society discovered semi-nudity during selected performances. The languorous swaying of these women got felt by men as an aphrodisiac. And sometimes as an invitation.

Lebanese poet Khalil Gibran said: “The soul of a dancer lives in her whole body”.

THE ‘MODERN’ ORIENTAL DANCE

The Oriental dance began appearing in Europe around the 1930s in spaces and performance halls. Many schools have sprung up in Europe and around the world. Here, oriental dance is taught in a good and authentic way as it has been for many years.

As more or less talen

ted people than those who came from the cradle of the discipline, teachers in these scho ols have gotten inclined to enhance the visuals mainly by emphasizing sensuality, with a few additions of jewels. And sequins are used to give greater prominence to two-piece suits. As a rule, this activity has achieved undeniable suc cess.

In the modern era, Oriental dance should encompass more than just the lower body and pelvis. To avoid muscular con tractions body’s parts need much tonicities and flexibility.

As we all know, men have practised oriental more and more. Some have become very famous and get often reque sted during major competitions and championships. These get organized in France and Spain most of the time.

In the modern era, dancers such as Nelly Mazloum and Mahmoud Reda incorporated aspects of classical ballet, influencing practitioners like Dina, Randa Kamel, Aziza, Sahar Samara, and Camelia, as well as other Egyptians of the time.

Today oriental dance and its many practised variations are no longer reserved for women. The popularity of this activity grows year after year with men who devote themselves to this art with incredible success.

The late Paris Opera star dancer Patrick Dupont said in his time, “Oriental dance is not just a caba ret dance, but must remain a sacred dance”.

THE WHIRLING DERVISHES ‘LA TANOURA’

Tanoura is a ceremony that gathers dancers close to the *samâ or dhikr of the order of Me vlevi dervishes. The men wear several skirts, some of which weigh ten kilograms. In the presence of the master of ceremonies, they begin by moving slowly, becoming fast, and soon reaching a state of trance under the in fluence of the music of the ney (reed flute), the al-daff (tambourine), and the song.

Dancers turn in the opposite direction of a watch around their left foot and then spre ad their arms, palms facing the sky, asking for the divine blessing. The left hand is then directed towards the ground to benefit the public.

These characteristics make them distinct

AHM | 150

from the traditional *sikke of the Mevlevi dervishes, known in Istanbul as part of the intangible heritage of humanity by Unesco. In Cairo, the art of the followers of the Sufi Jalal al-Din Roumi gets found in the co lourful ‘tannoura’ skirt in Arabic, the fo rehead sometimes covered with a scarf and a variety of coloured Skirts. It is important to understand that a dervish is a Sufi cal led a *semazen who must undergo training before performing a ceremony known as a *sema.

Among the over 15 million Sufis in Egypt, coloured skirts get often used to distinguish the various Egyptian brotherhoods. Each of the eighty brotherhoods has its approach to reli gion. Mohammed Adel manufactured garments with green and yellow swirls by himself. This art gets transmitted from father to son.

Festivals, concerts, and weddings are always festive oc casions for the tannoura in Egypt. As part of a mystical tradition of the order founded in the

12th century, choreographer Kareem Gad, born in Egypt, began his training around age 5 in Cairo. Around age 11 and 15, he began performing professionally in a folk group, playing instruments during many performances at the Opera Cai ro. He earned his reputation as one of the best by participating in the ‘tannoura’.

In all these cultures linked to dances, all dancers have an excep tional commitment to their art ba sed on a possible momentary escape between heaven and earth...

Tonino Marinello is a young breeder from Calabria in South Italy. After studying Arabian horses’ bloodlines and pedigrees in tensively and gaining practical expe rience, he founded TMA Arabians. Many of his horses have been sold in Europe and the Middle East, and he also acts as an agent for different bre eders. During his travels around the world, Tonino made crucial acquain tances that helped him establish his breeding business. The esteem and trust he enjoys today in the Arabian horse industry are the results of his great determination and unconditio nal dedication to the breed.

Who is Tonino Marinello? Please, introduce yourself to our re aders, providing us with some back ground about you and your family. Hi everyone! I am Tonino Marinello, I am 35 years old and I am the owner of TMA Arabians. My passion for the Arabian horse began in 2008. Since I can remember, I have always been in love with animals, especially horses,

but when I first saw the Arabian horse, it was love at first sight for me. I grew up in a family that loves animals, and my father always helped me manage my horses when I started cultivating this passion.

What made you prefer the Arabian breed to all the other horse breeds? It was not only the Arabian horse’s unique head shape that drew me to it but his charisma, supple movement and vivid intelligence. Every time I see Arabian horses, I notice something new, something different. That’s how I became passionate about them!

When was TMA Arabians foun ded? Whereabouts in Italy is it located? Which bloodlines are you mainly breeding there? Why?

It all started in 2008, as I said earlier. Using the Internet, I identified and studied all the possible bree ding programs

AHM | 155

in the world. I learned about their bloodlines. During the first years, I have been constantly attending Italian shows. For every horse, I examined the overall morphology, including Head, Neck, Movement, Shoulders, Legs, and Body, trying to understand the judges’ reasons for evaluating it.

To understand the genealogy of each subject, I meticulously studied the various pedigrees. Over time, I grew up with my mistakes and my ideas. The first mare I bought was Monisa, a wonderful daughter by Italian Champion Stallion TS Apolo (2003) (TS Don Brave x Fairness FHP). Monisa’s filly, Mariacla TMA, was also my first filly at stud. She got sold in the

Middle East and soon became Top Five in Qatar Show.

TMA Arabians are located in southern Italy, in beautiful Calabria, in Cutro. I breed bloodlines conveying a lot of movement and charisma. But also those that give completeness to the body and neck.

What does the word ‘breeding’ mean to you? What’s your breeding strategy? My definition of breeding is discovering new combinations by following my ideas and beliefs. The Arabian hor-

Which of your mares have you mainly been using to improve or evolve your breeding program? Which sirelines have you chosen for it? Any particular foals offering solid breeding and showing potential?

TMA Arabians was born taking one step at a time. Having started this fan tastic adventure in 2008, I bought my first mare in 2011 and, in 2014, I impor ted the mare that made me most proud: the enchanting bay PS Jubilee (2014) by PS Reminescence (2011) and out of the mare Thee Aurora (2010). When she was seven months old, PS Jubilee got imported to Italy from America. In her pedigree, I found everything I was lo oking for: American bloodlines such as

She got crowned Gold Medal Filly at Palermo Inter national Show, Gold Medal Fil ly at Montefalco Show, and Top Five Mares at Milan International Show. PS Jubilee is the only foundation mare of my breeding program. She has massi vely influenced the way I breed today.

What I love the most about her is the gobsmacking beauty and authentic Arabian type she can pass down to her foals.

something to be loved and appreciated by everybody. Tropea TMA takes your breath away and seems to be aware of the beauty she possesses. It is truly an amazing filly, a perfect example of the breed, charismatic and with that sort of “look at me” attitude that has captured my heart. Her posture and the way she moves, with such grace and elegan ce, show the beautiful conformation she has.

I feel that Tropea TMA will play a pivotal role in my breeding program in the future...

Tonino, will you please leave a mes sage to the readers of this interview? Pursuing this passion requires pa tience and time!

In addition to the handsome bay colt Ajab (by FA El Rasheem), who won the Gold Medal Colt at Milan International Show, PS Jubilee has also produced the gorgeous bay colt Aachen TMA (2019) by FA El Rasheem, who was Bronze Medal Colt in Prague, and my last born filly in 2022, Tropea TMA by the stun ning sire Ajman Moniscione (2003) (WH Justice x Anthea Moniscione). My advice is to focus on Quality rather than Quantity. I am going to create a small breeding program with 4 or 5 mares that I will select myself in the near future. I made myself known for my seriousness and honesty throughout the Midd le East and Europe and I reckon this is the best business card. My sincere thanks go out to all my clients and friends who continue to place their trust in me!

Thanks so much, Tonino. It was a pleasure talking to you. Wishing you the best in your journey with your Arabian horses!

The aesthetics of equestrian sport have had a significant im pact on the evolution of style and image in fashion.

The appearance of trousers in women’s everyday wardrobes is perhaps one of the most me morable fashion historical phe nomena. The writer Georges Sand wore trousers in the nine teenth century and is regarded as the originator of this trend. She did, however, sympathize with the general public, and the widespread adoption of trou sers into women’s wardrobes occurred only in the twentieth century.

There is a curious story about Coco Chanel, whose life was somehow linked to horses. Ne arly all of her romantic rela tionships were with passionate horseback riders.

One day, Gabrielle borrowed a jumper from a groom and wore it over her dress because it was frigid at the races. She saw the jockeys as they were in training and noted their leather jackets.

After a while, she began to in troduce her own designs in the resort Chanel’s boutique display, including light coats,

loose sailors’ jackets, and soft leather jackets like those worn by jockeys.

Once, Coco Chanel got the op portunity to live a year-long at a country estate. She spent the day riding horses and the eve nings attending social gathe rings. Coco went to the tailor armed with the jockey’s pants after deciding that the dress was uncomfortable for riding the horse. That is how the trousers came to be an essential part of a lady’s wardrobe.

The Hermès aesthetic is always reminiscent of horses and eque strian sports; the house logo, created in the 1950s, is a hor se-drawn buggy for a reason. Horses appear on the brand’s ties, scarves, and silk carriages, and its clothing almost always includes leather elements with recognizable equestrian stylin gs.

In the nineteenth century, Thierry Hermès established a horse harness workshop that catered primarily to European nobility. Hermès expanded its product line to include saddle bags toward the end of the cen tury, and in 1900 it developed a special bag for riders designed

to carry a saddle.

Then came the jewelry, women’s clothing collections, accesso ries, perfumes, scarves, and everything else we love about the brand today. By the way, the prototype for the brand’s most famous Kelly bag, designed in 1935, is said to be shaped like this because it was inspired by the form of a saddlebag.

Another iconic example from the fashion world connected with the equine aesthetic is the Italian House of Gucci.

Many of us have probably seen loafers or a handbag with a hor sebit, the Gucci house’s signatu re detail and symbol.

Guccio Gucci founded the glo bal brand in 1921, when he opened a small leather manu factory in Florence to produce leather bags, suitcases, horse harnesses, and riding accesso ries. Later, he began producing riding clothes, which quickly gained popularity among Euro pe’s top riders.

Back to those times, everyone was interested in Grace Kelly and her marriage to the Prin ce of Monaco. Grace enjoyed

horseback riding as well as silk garments and scarves. The le gend claims that she knew a dozen different ways to tie a scarf, one of which was named after her.

In 1966, she asked for a flo ral-patterned scarf from Ro dolfo Gucci, who forwarded the request to his top artist, Vit torio Accornero. Vittorio desi gned the Floral print, which is still seen in Gucci collections almost every year.

A silk scarf can transform any outfit, even a formal one, and

add a unique and eye-catching accent to the look.

Today, we’d like to share some tips and tricks for incorpora ting elegant equine aesthetics into a casual lady’s wardrobe by adding a silk scarf. Katerina Morgan, the artist and founder of Horse Polo Art Gallery, will assist us.

Katerina Morgan Horse Polo Art Gallery is an Online Art Gallery dedicated to both tra ditional and contemporary equestrian art, which collabo

rates with the artists from all over the world who are passio nate about horses.

“Our mission is to connect col lectors and horse lovers around the world with the best creators of equestrian art.”

Here are 5 ideas to tie a silk scarf. We have used 100% na tural silk scarves crafted by Ka terina Morgan with the idea of a sustainable fashion brand.

A silk scarf wrapped around your head always draws the attention of those around you.

You can also experiment with the length of the scarf by wrapping it around your ponytail. Apart from being simply classy and stylish, the silk is soft and gentle against your hair, preventing hair damage and frizz.

Show a combination of edge lines and patterns on your scarf to give your formal outfit a new look.

3Would you like to feel like an Old Hollywood Star? Cover your head with a beautiful silk scarf! Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Grace Kelly are all great sources of inspiration for us.

If you would love to raise the glamour vibes sky high, add a pair of cat eye sunglasses to your look.

Tie the long ties into an elegant, oversized bow for a memorable look. Luxurious silk against your neck will make you appear light and airy. Moreover, silk is far superior to cotton in terms of temperature regulation.

Draped over the shoulders silk scarf – simply place the center

of the scarf high on the neck and let it drape around each shoulder. This will look great with both men’s and women’s casual outfits.

Hello Giuseppe. Thank you very much for ac cepting the invitation! To provide some back ground to our readers, could you tell us a bit about yourself, your family and your educa tion?

Thank you for inviting me to this interview!

I am a humble young man, always ready to help others, I am very fond of family, friends and my roots in my beloved village “Pa lomonte” where I live with my family. I have a strong bond with each of its members. Since I always strive to achieve excellent results, doing my best, I have to admit that I don’t really have a nice character.

When have you first met an Arabian horse? Who was it?

My passion for the se amazing creatures begins at a young age when for the first time I saw an Arabian horse named Sciugar in front of my house. His movements were extremely elegant and

captivating. I was bewitched by him. From there, I began to torment my father for the purchase of an Arabian specimen!

At the age of 14, he bought my first Arabian. It was a mare named Rossella. My father’s intent was to buy it for me to make me understand the sacrifice and com mitment that go into managing a horse. But this, instead of making me want to go away, had the opposite ef fect. It only ignited this passion more in me. From that moment on, I had a whole series of adventures that led me to meet my brother ‘Gianluca’ from which

I purchased the first Arabian horse by my self. This is how I star ted my journey trying to always work along side people with sound principles and a desire to do. One of these pe ople is Geremia who supports me at 360 ° in this demanding and compelling professio nal path.

industry as a handler. How did it all start? My first experience as a handler was at the Montefalco show. Then, I participated in Cat tolica National Show. I must admit that the emotion, the fear of making a mistake, the agi tation, and the adrenaline were at their peak.

I believe that all of us who do this job live to experience these won derful emotions.

Have you developed a systematic program for handling Arabian horses of your own? In order to prepare a horse best for a show, how can you make sure that he is physically and mentally prepa red? How can the horses be made to perform at their best when ne eded?

I started working at Sacconi Arabian almost for fun, however, from then on, I started a se rious and constant professional training pro gram. Many sacrifices obviously took me to get

AHM | 174

to where I am now...

Let’s say that every trainer/handler has his own way of preparing horses, obviously all in rela tion to the horse in front of him. I’ll explain. Not all horses have the same musculature, nei ther the same mind nor the same personality. Therefore, very scrupulous work must be done, ad hoc for each individual subject. I strongly believe that when a horse is mentally healthy and the trainer gives him a way to trust him, the results will come and it will be our horse friend to make us understand when this hap pens.

A handler who wants to show his horse at shows at the best conditions must do everything to give his horse as much tranquillity and free dom as possible so that the horse can express

itself at its best.

Is there a limit to what an Arabian horse can be taught through handling?

In my opinion, there is no limit to what we can teach a horse, but here there is a continuous le arning process. Obviously, with the right times and techniques.

Who was the most challenging horse to train? (If any)

The most difficult horse for me to train was Sa abrizz Ppj, but I must admit that at the same time he gave me great satisfaction. Last year, he won the Silver medal at the Straight Egyp tians World Championship and also achieved numerous medals in other shows. After being

AHM | 175
AHM | 176

to hell and back because of him, I must now admit that Saabrizz Ppj is one of my favourite horses with a truly exceptional disposition and heart!

What are your favourite bloodlines? And your favourite stallion/mare? Why?

much perseverance and commitment he puts into it.

In my opinion, to become a good handler one must necessarily possess some crucial quali ties and skills: first, a strong passion for these splendid creatures; second, constancy, third a lot of patience, fourth, a spirit of sacrifice (whi ch often leads us to di stance ourselves from our families and loved ones).

I really like the Egyptian bloodlines because I believe that they are more representative of the primordial characteristics of the breed, but also of the functionality of the authentic Ara bian horse. However, I have to admit that the selection has gone a long way over the years in both Straight Egyp tian horses and horses with mixed bloodlines. My favourite horses are Unica Ppj, a 4-year-old Egyptian mare, and Preisen Ppj who gave me a lot of satisfaction in three years, inclu ding his first debut as a Futurity in Verona, which ended with an overwhelming victory in the midst of many horses of his age.

What, in your opinion, really defines a good Trainer/Handler? What do you need to beco me a successful one? A good trainer or handler can be recognized by the way he relates to the horse, and by how

Fifth, spirit of initiative; sixth, a lot of humility; seventh, perseverance; eighth, never get upset or think you’ve achie ved success. Always give and do your best to achieve excellent resul ts. Last, never say there is something I can’t do or I am postponing to tomorrow what needs to be done today.

Do you have any shows that will always be etched in your mind as a handler? In which country have you experienced a better quality of the organization of the shows? We’d like to hear about it...

The show that struck me the most was the one in Qatar, the Katara show. It was, one of the most spectacular shows in which I participa ted as a handler, with attention to the smallest details, from the horse boxes to the most trivial

AHM | 177

things, all in a framework that takes your brea th away ... as magical as it is.

The show of my heart, instead, is Vesuvio Trophy which takes place in Ottaviano, in southern Italy, on the slopes of the majestic volcano Vesuvius.

This show started a few years ago but aims to become one of the most important shows in Italy. It puts our beloved Arabian horses and their owners at the centre of attention, welco ming them into a healthy environment that feels like home, and offering the utmost hospi tality.

What do you think about the show environ ment today, Giuseppe? In your opinion, do the most deserving horses at the shows win based on today’s breed standards?

For us, who are true lovers of the Arabian hor se, the shows are very important because they allow us to proceed in the selection process. As well as giving us the chance to confront our selves, which is even more important. I firmly believe that it is important to encourage and help small breeders because management costs are increasing significantly. Lately, many peo ple have moved away from the industry becau se they feel there is a lot of favouritism and they don’t look at the horse itself. It is all about the handler presenting it. However, it’s not always the case, because breed standards have grown so much that keeping up with large farms is very tough!

What are your current commitments?

My current job is at Prisco Arabians. I feel at

AHM | 178

home here, I found a second family, and I star ted a long-term project with Donato, the farm’s owner. Passion, ideas, and a willingness to work are in abundance.

Giuseppe, would you mind leaving a final message or thanking anyone in particular?

I thank my mom, my father, my sister and my brother who have always been suppor tive of my life choices. I am very grateful to my grandparents and uncles who taught me to love nature and ani mals. A special thanks go to my wife for her patience, and for always being of help and comfort in moments of distance. Thank you Arabian Horse Magazine for this great opportunity!

Who is Kai Schmidsberger? How did you become a photographer? I am a passionate photographer and small breeder of Arabian horses in the eastern part of Germany, near Zwickau. I’ve always loved taking pictures and working with animals. I have been in contact with Arabian horses for more than 22 years because that was when my sister got her first horse. Since that time, I started to fo cus more and more on pho tography because you always want to have a nice picture of your beloved animals. A few years later I travelled a lot so landscape and wil dlife photography became also part of my passion.

What does photography mean to you? How would you describe your photo graphy style?

Photography and also my horses are a good balance to my main job as a software developer. Through photography, you get to know a lot of new people and places. I like taking natural pictures where the motive is shown from the best possible perspective and light.

Who were your early influences? The first big change and also maybe the real beginning of my passion

was a photography trip to some Arabian studs in Cairo with Gabriele Boiselle. This journey was the perfect combination of things that I really like.

What is your favourite subject to photograph? Why?

In the meantime, in addition to animal photography, I also deal with people photography, from portraits to wedding reports. But, my favourite subject is and will always be the Arabian horse.

In 2006, I bought my first own Arabian horse, a Kubinec’s daughter with outstanding movements. I like the power and charisma of this breed.

Which is your favourite lens? Why?

The lens which I use really depends on the subject and the situation. I love working with prime lenses. For animal photography, however, more flexibility is necessary, so I mostly work with the 70-200 mm from Canon.

AHM | 210

What makes the good picture stand out from the average?

For me an outstanding picture must combine a nice subject in the right moment and perspective with a special light with a matching background. This is not always possible and the case, but I always try that at least the subject is shown from the best point and view.

How do you educate yourself to take better pictures?

The best education is always doing what you like.

I also took part in some workshops, but the best and most helpful experiences come from actual shootings. Reality is always different from theory. I think the subject I

Among your photo collections, which one is your favourite? Why?

There are many different ones. I really liked the shooting in the El Zahraa stud. To see the herd of mares in this special place and the whirled-up sand was extraordinary.

Another special picture is from a shooting during a whale-watching tour in Iceland. The light and the location were amazing.

What kind of tools do you use for post-processing?

I think I use the same tools as most photographers. Adobe Lightroom for exposure adjustments and Adobe Photoshop for removing disturbing elements such as fences.

AHM | 212

How did you get involved in the Arabian horse world as a photographer?

As a small breeder, you automatically come into contact with other breeders. I took some pictures of the horses of some friends and at some horse shows. From year to year, it becomes more and I really enjoy it.

Have you ever been to any national or international show competition?

I know both sides.

I was in some small local show competitions as a breeder to show my own horses. I am very proud of them and they also had small successes.

As a photographer and spectator, I was in different national or international show competitions like the All Nations Cup in Aachen, Arabica in Frankfurt, Al Khale-

AHM | 213

Who are your best friends in this sector?

I have the best connections to Murana Stud in Germany. I got my mare from there and also the stallions for my foals came from this connection. In the meantime, they have a puppy from my Jack Russell lady.

I have also some international friends from a stud journey to Morocco organized by the Pyramid Society Europe e.V.

What is the least enjoyable part of being a photographer? And the most rewarding part?

The least enjoyable part is the selection and post-processing of the pictures because, in my main job as a software developer, I spend a lot of time on the PC.

The most best part is the shooting itself because I like to work with animals or have contact with new people.

What are your hopes and dreams or future goals? Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

I would like to travel more again and to see new countries in the next few years. If the whole thing can also be combined with photography, that would be great.

Kai, would you mind leaving a message for our readers? Believe in yourself and do what you like.

Thank you so much, Kai. Have faith in yourself, and you can make everything come true. Think beyond your ability, go beyond your dream!

Sundar Alisayyah’s last son had excellent o spring but had less luck than his elder brother. When he was used for sport, then put into production, he didn’t cover as many large noble mares as did Al Adeed Al Shaqab.

e subject in question is the old Hadban Al Shaqab (08.02.2001) (Ashhal Al Rayyan x Sundar Alisayyah), a subject who, a er having worked as a stallion in Italy, ended up in the United States where, as of 2018, he has been owned by Mrs Robin Lee of Aleah Arabians, Deming, New Mexico. Although descended from the Hadban En-

zahi family, Hadban Al Shaqab’s pedigree was heavily in uenced by Al Duhaym subjects. is stallion had an excellent body structure, a beautiful head with well-set ears, a long neck with large shoulders, a smooth and strong short back, a nice, powerful, muscular rump with a beautiful tail carriage, and superlative and correct legs. I found his not wide forehead to be the only thing about his body that I didn’t like so much when I rst met him in Italy. at, however, is a detail that does not a ect my overall judgment. In order to prove how well-built he was, Hadban Al Shaqab won

10 AHM | 218

the following awards as soon as he arrived in the USA: 2012 Egyptian Event Unanimous Gold Champion Stallion and Highest Score in the Show, 2012 Region 2 Champion Stallion, 2012 Reserve National Champion Stallion 8 Years and Older, and 2012 Top Ten National Stallion. He was a classic Arabian stallion who gave you goosebumps every time he entered the ring with his shiny coat, majestic presence, and charm.

Hadban Al Shaqab’s success in the U.S.A.

(05.01.1965) by Ramses Fayek (Fayek), a mare that produced ve colts and six crucial llies for the AlBadeia Stud Farm breeding program. I would like to highlight the genetic importance of this mare. Her rst daughter named Halawa (18.02.1994) (Kayed x Malekat El Wadi), bred with Amir AlBadeia produced the chestnut mare Hasanat AlBadeia (05.08.1981). She became the progenitor of major international subjects a er being exported to the United States in 1983. e chestnut Halawat

was due to Dr Jody Cruz, of Rancho Bulakenyo, Los Osos, California, where the rst sons of this stallion were born. His progeny showed excellent conformation, exceptional movement, beautiful heads with large black eyes, and well-positioned and well-modelled ears. All the traits for producing daughters who would become in uential mares and foremothers of new families.

Hadban Al Shaqab is spending his last years on his ranch in New Mexico, on pasture with his mares, with Mrs Robin, who loves to ride him in the desert or in the mountains.

Nagdia’s rst daughter was Malekat El Wadi

AlBadeia (07.10.1978) (Amir AlBadeia x Malekat El Wadi) became a pivotal mare in the selection of AlBadeia Stud Farm. Among her daughters, we nd the grey Ibtehag Albadeia (02.01.1993) by the bay Badran AlBadeia (04.08.1985) (Moataz x Badawia). is tall and elegant mare, known as “ e Queen of Egypt”, was Champion Mare at the Egyptian Breeders Association Annual Arabian Horse Show for four consecutive years, and four times Egyptian National Champion Mare. In the late 1990s, Simeon Stud of Sydney, NSW, Australia, was looking for subjects to introduce new bloodlines, and Mrs Marion Luise Richmond was in love with Ibtehag Albadeia, but money

can’t buy everything. Because Dr Nasr Marei was looking for new blood for his farm as well, the two agreed to swap the two best subjects of their respective farms, leaving Farid AlBadeia out of the agreement since he was too important for e Mareis. So, in 2000 the lly Wed AlBadeia (1999) (Farid AlBadeia x Momtazat Albadeia) and Ibtehag AlBadeia went to Australia, while the famous stallion Simeon Sharav (1999) (Asfour x Simeon Shuala) and the mare Simeon Sa r (1994) (Asfour x Simeon Safanad) in foal to Anaza Bay Shahh (19862016) (Shaikh Al Badi x Bint Deenaa) arrived in Egypt, where Simeon Sa r became an Egyptian National Reserve Champion Mare.

Ibtehag AlBadeia became a successful mare at Simeon Stud. At shows, she won the title of Australian National Champion Mare. She produced the bay Simeon Sabina (30.01.2005) (Asfour x Ibtehag AlBadeia) who became East Coast Reserve Champion Mare. Ibtehag AlBadeia was bought by David Kane Gillett on September 1st, 2013. He took himself the mare to his Diamond Road Arabian Stud located on New South Wales’ north-central coast, not to jeopardize her life.

e late Ibtehag AlBadeia spent her last years on the Diamond Road Arabian Stud.

Her daughter Simeon Sharona (10.01.2011) by Simeon Sahron (02.08.2007) (Imperial Madaar x Simeon Setavi), purchased on 1st June 2015 from David Gillett, also stayed at the Stud. Mr Gillett described Ibtehag AlBadeia to me as a slightly shy mare, but with incredible movements and presence. She was a wonderful, very loving mother. Ibtehag AlBadeia (02.01.1993) died in 2019 from old age while Mr Gillett was travelling in Europe. is caused the man great sorrow because he could not say her goodbye, but he still had the honour of having had her on his farm. e “Queen of Egypt” le behind o spring who got exported not only to Egypt and Australia, but also to Saudi Arabia and South Africa.

Among the progeny of Ibtehag AlBadeia, Inshallah AlBadeia (25.02.1998) by Farid AlBadeia was a successful stallion in Saudi Arabia, but I will discuss him later. Additionally, Simeon Safra (13.12.2000) by AK El Sennari (21.02.1980) (Ibn Moniet El Nefous x Il Bint Khedena); Simeon Sivana (18.09.2002) by Asfour (08.08.1984-02.10.2009 (Malik x Hanan), sold to Mr Jack Maritz and shipped to South Africa on April 11, 2003; the stallion Simeon Sayyar (20.02.2004) by Asfour, exported to AlBadeia Stud Farm, Egypt, on

April 27, 2005; the stallion Simeon Shovan (04.01.2006) by Asfour; Simeon Shalihah (01.08.2007) by Asfour; the stallion Simeon Saadli (01.10.2008) by Asfour; Simeon Silron (11.10.2009) by Asfour. e last two born in Diamond Road Arabian Stud were not Straight Egyptian and were the stallion Ibn Nahdejni (17.11.2014) by Windemere Imperial Nahdejni (19.10.199101.10.2014) and the handsome gelding Khaled Ibn Naajmir (18.11.2015) by Naajmir (29.12.2011).

During the Egyptian National Show, Inshallah AlBadeia (25.02.1988) was proclaimed Junior Champion Colt at the age of two. He was later bought by a Persian Gulf gentleman and donated to His Royal Highness Prince Abdullah Ben Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia. AlBadeia Stud Farm was eventually transferred to the Prince’s private stable, “Al Janaderia”, where he remained for many years, even a er His Royal Highness Abdullah Ben Abdul Aziz became king. It is fair to say that Malekat El Wadi (05.01.1965) had other o spring that would deserve mention, but I will focus on the grey Farida (14.04.1967), who was also a daughter by Ramses Fayek (Fayek) and remained at AlBadeia Stud Farm. Furthermore, given his importance, I must talk about her son Farid AlBadeia (02.01.1984-19.09.2010) (Amir AlBadeia x Farida).

Farida (14.04.1967) had thirteen foals at

AlBadeia Stud Farm, of which ten females got almost all exported, seven went to the U.S. and one to Germany. So, at e Mareis remained only the chestnut Nada AlBadeia (02.03.1982) and the bay Salamat AlBadeia (20.01.1983), both by the stallion Hafeed Anter (11.02.1975) (Wahag x Basima), who carried on this female bloodline. Farida’s daughters exported to the U.S. were: Zeina (Lancers Zeina) (14.02.1974) and El Zahraa (26.02.1975), both daughters by Kayed, and imported in 1976 by Mr Donald R. and Mrs Jeanne Jacques Ford of Lancer Arabians, Brighton, Michigan. Rababa (Rababaa) (31.03.1977) and Ibtisam AlBadeia (Ibtisam) (29.06.1978) were also daughters by Kayed. Mr Rick and Mrs Ann Heber, Ranchara Arabians, Merrimac, Wisconsin, imported the rst in 1978, and the second in 1979. Gamalat AlBadeia (30.05.1979) by Asil Al-

Badeia (18.04.1972) (El Badi x Atfa), imported by Mrs Patricia M. & Mr John L. Burgess Galleywinter Farm, Waco, Texas in 1980 together with the last daughter of Nagdia, the bay Garat AlBadeia (18.08.1979).

Badeia, got imported in 1981 by Mrs Marta G. Williams Petrulli, Pennsylvania and joined the broodmares of Green Mountain Stud, Oregon.

Raneen AlBadeia (10.04.1981) by Ameer (10.10.1970) (Galal x Moniet El Nefous), imported in 1981 by Mr Robert A. Kathary of Beaver, Pennsylvania. Farida’s last daughter was the grey Ferdous AlBadeia (17.05.1987) by Mansour AlBadeia (16.10.1982) (Amir AlBadeia x Asrar). She got exported to Europe and later became an important mare at Black Smoke Arabians, of omas Mayer’s family, of Idar Oberstein, Germany.

Ferdous AlBadeia, in addition to producing stunning mares at e Mayers, foaled the magnicent black stallion BS Echnaton (2005) by Al-Hakim (2001) (Muhajjal x e Vision HG). Alongside the mares just mentioned, Farida produced three stallions during her career, including AlBadeia Stud Farm’s prized stallion, Farid AlBadeia. Her two other sons were the stallion Mahran AlBadeia (18.07.1985) by Moataz (23.02.1973) (Nasralla x Enayat) and Saber AlBadeia (16.06.1986) by Ikhnatoon (26.10.1974) (Farazdac x Bint Om El Saad). Farid AlBadeia (02.01.198419.09.2010) was the son of Amir

AlBadeia, and hence the grandson of Malekat El Gamal who was another daughter of Nagdia. Based on his pedigree, it turns out that he has 50 per cent of Nazeer’s blood and two female branches from Nagdia. As a result of Nagdia’s blood owing into her daughters Farida and Malekat El Gamal, this resulted in Farid AlBadeia inherited large, shiny black eyes, for which he is still remembered. Combining the multiple ancestors of the Hadban Enzahi family with three crosses with the Kuhaylan Rodan family,

and as many crosses with the stallion Dahman Shahwan, Sid Abouhom (02.03.1936-1963) (El Deree x Layla), built Farid AlBadeia’s compact, strong, muscular, masculine body. He was a real Arabian performance horse. Strong, as you would expect from a stallion. e thin skin accentuated his veins and bones. A subject with overwhelming beauty and balance. In common with many horses from this family, Farid AlBadeia had a broad hip, a muscular, rounded and strong rump, and a powerful hind train, the same power was displayed in the front. He had

21 22 23
AHM | 225

a very high tail that while he was not running, was carried in a graceful curve detached from the body, like a true Arabian Horse. He had beauti-

ful, oblique shoulders with prominent withers. A nely arched, elegant neck set high on his chest. Farid AlBadeia was not only a correct-bodied stallion, but also had an exquisite head, with short, broad ears, and large, very supple nostrils, like a real desert horse. When AlBadeia Stud Farm displayed him on show, the public was impressed by his beauty.

Farid AlBadeia won the following titles: 1997 Reserve Egyptian National Champion, 1998 Egyptian National Champion, 2002 Egyptian National Champion, 1995, 1996 and 1998 Champion Stallion at the Egyptian Breeders Association Show. e Prince of AlBadeia Stud Farm was not only handsome, but he was also an excellent reproducer. We have already discussed the mare Wed AlBadeia (1999) (Farid AlBadeia x Momtazat AlBadeia) and the Champion Inshallah AlBadeia (25.02.1998) out of the “Queen of Egypt” Ibtehag AlBadeia (02.01.19932019). However, there are many others like the stunning Farha AlBadeia (01.04.2000) and Bashooshah AlBadeia (2002), daughters of the outstanding mare Gelgelah AlBadeia (06.10.1995). In addition, the beautiful bay Sondos AlBadeia (03.04.1996) out of Mahasen AlBadeia (1988) (Mansour AlBadeia x Naeema); and the two sisters Shakawa AlBadeia (02.12.2001) and Sonbolat AlBadeia (2001),

daughters of Galagel AlBadeia (16.11.1996) (Imperial Madori x Anhar AlBadeia). Moreover, Zahwa AlBadeia (12.09.1997) out of Sodfat AlBadeia (1987) (El Walid x Kamar AlBadeia); Farial Rahim (13.12.2000) out of Set El Hosn Rahim (1998) (Imperial Madori x Farha 1995 by Wasel x Sofsafa), a Hadba Enzahiya mare from the important Lateefa’s family (10.11.1945) (Gamil III x Salwa). All mares who produced champions or were themselves great champions. AlBadeia Stud Farm also inherited important sires from Farid AlBadeia. Among them was the grey Hadban Enzahi, Nagham AlBadeia (05.02.1998) out of Dandanah AlBadeia (04.04.1994 (Fayrouz AlBadeia x Halawat AlBadeia), a maternal sister to Ibtehag AlBadeia (02.01.1993-2018). e bay Dahman Shahwan, Burhan Sakr (1999) out of Alidarra (1989) (Alidaar x Glorieta Serima), from the family of Ansata Sabiha (01.03.1968) (Ansata Ibn Halima x Sabrah). And last but not least, the

27 26 AHM | 227

Hadban Enzahi grey stallion Dahoom AlBadeia (2002) out of Simeon Sa r (1994) (Asfour x Simeon Safanad). His bloodlines were from the Babolna State Stud mare Hosna (05.07.1965) (Ibn Maisa x Rida da El Sareei), bred in AlBadeia Stud Farm by Dr Sayed Marei and imported to Hungary in 1971.
