THE BRAZILIAN BEAUTY BAVIERA HVP
Baviera HVP (Marwan Al Shaqab x HB Bessolea) was born in 2012 in Brazil. Bred by Nelson de Oliviera Prata Pinto Moreira, Brazil, is currently owned by Aria Prestige Holdings LLC and is on lease to Mr. Ahmad Abdulaziz Al Babtain of Abhaa Arabians, Kuwait. Baviera HVP is considered a vision of perfection. Her parents have blessed her with the very best. Baviera HVP gained stardom very early in life and it was evident that she was going to be considered a queen of the ring. It was at the 2016 Brazilian Nationals that Baviera HVP made her name known. In the United States, with her main man, Andrew Sellman at her side, she took on all the major shows in the U.S. in 2018. When Ahmad Abdulaziz Al Babtain of Abhaa saw Baviera HVP, he knew that he had to have her under his banner. He knew that she would be a perfect fit as well as the perfect candidate to campaign throughout Europe. Once the lease was signed, Baviera HVP made her way to Italy where she
would reside and be trained and shown by professional horseman and lover of the Arabian horse, Paolo Capecci. Baviera HVP made her European debut on the sun kissed sands in the French Riviera at the Mediterranean and Arab Countries Arabian Horse Championships. Paolo showed her to perfection and she was crowned Silver Champion Senior Mare and both her supporters and the teams at Abhaa Arabians and Capecci Training Centre were elated. With Paolo Capecci at her side and the full support and love of the Abhaa Arabians, Capecci Training Centre, Sahara Scottsdale and Aria Arabians teams behind her, Baviera HVP was bound to blossom on European soil. At the Salon du Cheval World Championships in Paris 2019, Baviera HVP was named the most beautiful mare in the world, Gold Medal Senior Mare. She dazzled crowds and judges, taking her name and the of name Abhaa Arabians to the Olympus of the Arabian breed.

winning Championships in 2018, including the 2018 Dubai International Show Gold Champion Foal Raboubah Al Hawajer, owned by Al Hawajer stud the 2019 Show Season started with amazing results. Once again, Raboubah made her way into the Championships by winning her class and later awarded Bronze Champion Yearling Filly at the Ajman Arabian Horse Show. In addition, Fam Donatella owned Al Jawaher stud was crowned Gold Champion at Abu Dhabi International Show 2019- Yearling Fillies Championship; Bronze Champion at Dubai International Championships 2019, and more recently, Gold Champion Yearling Filly at Milan 2019 - Yearling Fillies Championship and Silver Champion Yearling Filly at All Nations Cup Aachen 2019. Not to forget the incredible success at the Brazilian National Championships 2019 of Lady Dominica owned by Jorge Costantino Selume Zaror who grabbed the Title of Gold Champion Junior Filly; and Preludio OSB owned by Al Kaisar Stud who won the Title of Gold Champion Young Stallion. In the meantime, the first babies sired by Dominic M that are born in Europe look really fantastic. So, we now have the physical evidence that what we were waiting for it did come by in the end. Three of them have already given the international public a real chance to talk about them over major competitions in the United Arab Emirates. We want to mention them as they really dazzled both judges and audiences: Al Ryam Banafsaj, owned by Al Aryam Arabians Stables - Gold Champion Yearling Filly at Kalba Show in the United Emirates; Shumoos Al Hawajer, owned by Al Hawajer Stud - Gold Champion Yearling Filly at Sharjah Arabian Horse Festival; last but not least Ghaly Al Hawajer, owned by Al Hawajer stud - Gold Champion Yearling Colt at Sharjah Arabian Horse Festival. Special thanks go to Las Rosas and European Breeding Trust for their great management of Dominic M. WE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE NEXT STEP FOR THE 2020 BREEDING SEASON AT DANUBIUS ARABIANS, ROMANIA.

Travelling around Italy, Europe and the world to celebrate the beauty, the charisma and the versatility of the Arabian Horse is now routine work for Arabian Vibe Srls and his staff of professionals. In Italy, we are used to following and organizing the most important events on the Italian Show Tour 2019, affiliated to Anica and Ecaho, and conceived by Gianluca Martino. But, most of all, from this year on, we have managed to earn a living space in the framework of a very important showcase like Fieracavalli Verona 2019, given the rich calendar of collateral events that this Fair brings about every year. This centenary historical event is no longer just a Fair, but a real tradition with the horse at its heart. A catalyst of interests for all horse enthusiasts, particularly, for all the people who recognize themselves in a new way of conceiving life through horses, between sport, leisure, environment and adventure. A unique parterre in Italy, but also in Europe, where amateurs and professionals in the sector meet and get to know each other. A history and a strong brand that this year was further enhanced by a top class actor in the automotive world such as Volkswagen, main sponsor of Fieracavalli 2019 along with many other partners such as Banco BPM and Cattolica Assicurazioni. The big news of the 2019 edition can be summed up in two words: ethics and sustainability, both social and environmental. They represent the two cornerstones of Fieracavalli Academy, which is a multidisciplinary project with the aim of spreading an increasingly respectful animal welfare driven culture. The work of the Academy started from afar as an initiative of Veronafiere. Unlike other fairs promoting products such as wine, marble or construction machines, here they proudly host living beings that are also faithful companions in sport, in slow tourism, in everyday life and even in people’s rehab thanks to hippo-therapy. Fieracavalli Academy is divided into 5 different sectors, each with specific purposes and under the coordination of experts in the field: sport, horse protection, tourism, western and social riding. A final note about the other ‘spirit’ of Fieracavalli: the business. 750 companies from 25 countries joined in the Fair, for a total of 25 thousand net square meters only for the exhibitors. All the most important Made in Italy and international brands of items for horse riding and horse care equipment were there: from stables to clothing, from supplement to veterinary products. Starting from Saturday 7th November 2019, the spotlight was on the highly anticipated Arabian Horse Show - Fieracavalli Verona 2019

ending in overwhelming success, showered with honours and praise; particularly for insiders, it proved to be a much-needed and enjoyable event. The historical Pavilion 2 at FieraCavalli Verona witnessed the alternation, in the elegant ring, of top quality Arabian horses coming from the most celebrated breeding farms. In addition to the International Championships, the Egyptian Event, itself an international event, was held along with the Females and Males 2019 Futurity Championships, reserved for the sole European citizens and powered by the European Breeders Trust Association with a prize-pool of Euro 5.000, followed by an Amateur competition, sponsored by Aljassimya Stud from Qatar and reserved for non-professional handlers. Dulcis in fundo, the Finals of the Italian Show Tour reserved for Arabian horses born and bred in Italy, and a wonderful presentation of stallions complemented with horse selling initiatives and a breeding clinic. Therefore, we are talking about an impressive’ machine’ that put in place a great deal of activities related to the equestrian world in only four days, with international breeders, world-famed characters including high-profile judges, handlers, investors and representatives of important families from the Middle East. A mighty ‘machine’, starting from the very location, the romantic city of Verona. We checked on stands and famous brands. Each team some more and some less, of course – built and decorated its own promotional booth to the smallest detail according to thematic areas, with moments of great entertainment for the public. Three exclusive evenings with rides, dressage shows, free shows with music, dance, equestrian theatre and lots of good food thanks to the presence of the ‘Assunta Madre’ Restaurant inside the Fair, directed by internationally renowned Chef Franco Bloisi. For all those who, like us, were personally involved in organizing and managing the various morphology competitions, it was a dream that turned into reality ending with unexpected success. We had a great panel of judges in a super mix

The word magnificence is a noun that means: the quality of being magnificent. And if we look at the meaning of magnificent, we see it is an adjective that means: extremely beautiful, elaborate, or impressive. In the Arabian horse industry, there is a stallion that embodies the word magnificent. As he trots his mane dances to the tune of the wind; his lustrous bay coat plays with the sun’s rays as he strikes the air. His flared nostrils, pricked ears, perfectly dished head and timeless expression stops one in their tracks – his magnificence radiates far beyond the horizon; his name is Kanz Albidayer. Kanz Albidayer was bred by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saud Al Qasimi of Albidayer Stud in Sharjah, UAE. From the day that he was born, it was evident that Kanz Albidayer was destined for magnificence and that superstardom was only a few steps away. Whether it is in a photo, a video, a live stream recording or in the flesh, Kanz Albidayer is truly a sight to behold. His exotic head is adorned with expressive eyes that are set at the perfect distance apart and ears that are short and shaped like the tail of a scorpion. His neck is strong and his body is solid; and when he moves, he engages, lifting his legs high off the ground and keeping his tail over his back. This type of striking beauty and magnificence was passed on to Kanz Albidayer through his illustrious genotype. Kanz Albidayer’s pedigree is a magical blend of the breed’s greatest

individuals; each generation is filled to the brim with beauty, quality and success. Kanz Albidayer is sired by Ajman Moniscione (WH Justice x Anthea Moniscione), a stallion known as the “master painter of living art.” This exotic, chestnut stallion got his
KanzAlbidayer - Ajman 2010 nickname because of the outrageously beautiful foals he has been producing and Kanz Albidayer is definitely one of Ajman Moniscione’s most spectacular

respectively, “The Champion Maker” himself, WH Justice (Magnum Psyche x Vona Sher-Renea). WH Justice brings with him the blood of U.S. National Champions Magnum Psyche, Padrons Psyche and Padron and through his dam comes a line to the breed icon, El Shaklan. Ajman Moniscione’s dam, Anthea Moniscione (Padrons Ghibli x Armonia), adds a huge dose of Russian blood to this pedigree. Through her sire she adds a second cross to Padron and through her dam we find lines to the Russian legends, Negatraz and Nariadni. Kan Albidayer’s dam, DL Marielle (Marwan Al Shaqab x RGA Kouress), is a full sister to World and U.S. National Champion Marajj. She is a daughter of the incomparable, three time World Champion, Marwan Al Shaqab (Gazal Al Shaqab x Little Liza Fame). From Gazal Al Shaqab to Anaza El Farid to Ruminaja Ali to Morafic, the immortal Marwan Al Shaqab brings with him the highly influential Nazeer sire line. Marwan Al Shaqab also brings with him the blood of U.S. National Champion Fame VF and in turn Bey Shah through his dam, the Al Shaqab Stud foundation mare, Little Liza Fame. Both Marwan Al Shaqab and his sire, Gazal Al Shaqab are living legends and icons that will forever be revered for the impact they have had, currently have and will continue to have on the breed. DL Marielle’s dam is an aristocrat of the highest form; she is RGA Kouress (Kouvay Bey x Angophora). RGA Kouress is a classic beauty that is gifting the breed with exquisite individuals one after the other. It is RGA Kouress’s sire that adds a second cross to Bey Shah as well as a cross to U.S. National Champion, Aladdinn. Her dam, Angophora, is sired by the Polish super-sire Eukaliptus and is out of Belbowrie Baskana, a daughter of Bask – the stallion known to single-handedly change the face of the breed. With such a power packed interior, Kanz Albidayer was bound to have such an ultra-gorgeous exterior. And it is that same beauty, correctness, refinement and overall depth of quality that was bestowed upon him by his ancestors that enabled Kanz Albidayer to become a show ring sensation. Kanz Albidayer was shown extensively as a junior by Scott Allman; together they reached the top and became well known names in the winner’s circle. Kanz Albidayer made his debut in December of 2009 at the Sharjah Arabian Horse Festival where he was named unanimous Gold Champion Junior Colt; and from there, the golds just kept streaming in. Kanz Albidayer started off 2010 at the Ajman National C Show where he was awarded Gold Champion Junior Colt as well as highest scoring horse of the show. After being named Silver Champion Junior Colt at the Abu Dhabi International Show, Kanz Albidayer went on to win two Gold Junior Colt titles back to back; one at the Sharjah International Show and the other at the Dubai International Show. After dominating the Middle East, it was time for Kanz Albidayer to take on Europe. At the Mediterranean & Arab Countries Arabian Horse Championships, Kanz Albidayer was named Silver Champion Junior Colt. And
AHM | 97
later on, at the European Futurity, he was named Champion Yearling Colt and Overall Futurity Champion. In 2011, Kanz Albidayer went back to the Dubai International show arena to defend his title, but was named Silver Champion Junior Colt. Then in 2012, as a beautiful three year old, he competed in the Middle East for the last time as a junior. He went on to win the Gold Junior Colt title at the Abu Dhabi International Show and earned his third Dubai International Show title after being named Gold Champion Mayahdah Albidayer Junior Colt. After such a successful show career, Kanz Albidayer was ready to take on the role that many were waiting for – his role as a sire. The Kanz Albidayer foals are easy to spot in a crowd; their sire stamps them with his signature look; it is a look of luxury, superiority and magnificence. The foals all have their Nisreen Albidayer sire’s extreme face, perfectly shaped ears and expressive eyes. Where best to start naming the Kanz Albidayer foals then where he was bred. Albidayer Stud bred Kanz Albidayer to a many of their top mares and the results met everyone’s expectations. At the UAE Nationals, the charismatic Burkan Albidayer (x Bidayer) was named Silver National Champion while his gorgeous, bay half sister, Nisreen Albidayer

(x Nismat Albidayer) was named Bronze National Champion. Another daughter, Mayahdah Albidayer (x Maranta) has won titles in many international arenas, while the elegant Kareemah Albidayer flew her sire’s name high in the U.S.A. after being named Scottsdale International Gold Champion Yearling Filly and Las Vegas Silver Champion Yearling Filly. Two colts, both out of Marwan Al Shaqab daughters, Elle Ammar (x Allamara MA) and El Ettore (x Dena Kay FF) are fine representatives of the ‘Kanz Albidayer brand’ in the U.S. Both have shown successfully in regional arenas and the future can only get brighter. Kanz Albidayer’s most successful foal to date is Luigi (x Lolita). Luigi is an outstanding, bay stallion that was bred by Danielle Saelens in Belgium and is owned by Al Shahania Stud. As a yearling Luigi was named Gold Champion at the Tulip Cup and at Vichy. He was named Silver Champion Yearling Colt at the European Championships and Bronze Yearling Colt at the All Nations Cup and World Championships. As a two year old, Luigi added the Silver Champion Colt title from Menton, Aachen, Europe and Paris to his ever growing collection. Another Kanz Albidayer son, AJ Jabran (x DA

Two Kanz Albidayer daughters in Europe, one grey and the other bay, both hailing from small breeding programs, have shown successfully. JL Azamah (x JB Aurora) is a glorious grey filly that was named Gold Champion at the Tulip Cup and Silver Champion at the Scandinavian Open. MT Mantra (x Mandalai Blu FA) is a beautiful bay that was named Bronze Champion at the Strohen and UKIAHS Shows and she was recently sold at the Schoukens Training Centre auction. Seranza (x Evening Serenade) is a sensational Kanz Albidayer daughter that was bred in the U.S. by
Michael Byatt and is currently owned by Mohamad Shekh Sliman of Al Sheikh Stud. She is the reigning 2017 Bronze Champion Yearling Filly at the Las Vegas Arabian Breeders World Cup, Strohen International and All Nations Cup Shows. The latest foal crops by Kanz Albidayer are filled to the brim with superstars. At the Saudi Arabian Horse Festival held in January early this year, three wonderful Arabian specimen all sired by him have literally sent the audiences to franzy. The pretty chestnut TL Rayana (2018) (x Reema La) was nominated Gold Champion Yearling Filly for the proud of her breeder and owner Abdulaziz Bin Ahmed Alfawzan from Tala Stud. She is bred by Ali Bin Hussain Bin Ali Smaa and owned by Fahad Faisal Abdulrhaman Almoammar. With a magnificent exterior, a magnificent show record and foals of magnificent proportions, I can with confidence say that Kanz Albidayer is the epitome of magnificence. Kanz Albidayer has been passed through the hands of the greatest horsemen and women in our industry; from Scott Allman to Johanna Ullstrom and to Michael Byatt to name a few. They have all helped shape and mould his career to what it is today. The

magnificence that they have lent to Kanz Albidayer has only added to his own, the question is, will there be more to come? And the answer is yes! His gorgeous bay daughter Sangraia (x GC Le Marais) proved already to be the perfect extension of such an inoxidable daily magnificence. This filly tremendously impressed the judges and the audiences at 2019 King Abdulaziz Arabian Horse Center Show by taking over the arena with a welldeserved Bronze medal. She has already become Mr. Mai Al Hanaper’ s apple-in-the eye who spares really no effort to give her the most adequate living conditions and training sessions. Sangraia will soon get ready to start a brilliant show career and build her way up to stardom.

udging Arabian horses’ conformation takes practice, but anyone who has spent time around these beautiful creatures can learn to do it. Judges usually look for a combination of balance, structure, muscling, gait, and breed-specific features. For the 2020 Special Middle East edition, I had the pleasure to interview Mr. Terry Holmes he was pleased to walk me through the main aspects of his professional experience in judging Arabian horses.
Once my dad opened his own practice my mother purchased a couple of half Arabian horses. She had grown up with horses and missed not having them. Then one day we traveled to look at some horses at an Arabian farm in Iowa. My parents bought their first purebred Arabian mare that was in foal. The resulting foal was a Filly that we showed in halter and English pleasure. She won a lot and we bred her and her first two Fillies together sold for a half a million dollars. We
Hello, Mr. Terry Holmes. Just to set the scene with our readers, give us some background to you, to your family and education please. I was born and raised in Iowa, USA. My father was going to veterinary school at Iowa State University when I was born. He graduated from veterinary school there and that’s where my bond with animals started.
sold her to a great home and they continued to breed her. While this was going on I went to go to work for the Boggs family and Midwest training center for 15 years. Then I went on to work for RA Aloha Arabians, where I helped make the purchase of Khadraj NA for RA Aloha. Then I went to work for myself Terry Holmes Arabians. Now I manage a farm in Scottsdale, AZ. She volunteers around the world in her free time and now rides as an adult in Arabian reining. Just got her first Reserve National Champioship in 2019 When did you become a judge? What specific preparation did you get? I have been a judge for over 25 years. The education system in the United States is very difficult and I went through the process to become a judge. The continual education for judges in the United States is very progressive. Just go to the AHA judging website to find out how to become a judge in the United States. Between AHA and USEF, they have numerous programs and testing for all licensed officials to stay current with breed standards. All licensed judges must stay current at all times.

What do you feel has been your most rewarding experience as a judge? My most rewarding experience has been to judge the great Arabian Horses all over the world. I’ve had the honor to judge just about everywhere in the world at all the best shows. And it truly is an honor to judge the beautiful Arabians around the world. What horse or horses have you judged that have left the greatest impression on you? I cannot single one horse out that I’ve wor-

ked around or judged as there has been so many great great horses that I’ve been able to see and be around. I did get to spend a lot of time when I was young with Padron!!! He was an amazing Arabian Stallion. What are, in your opinion, the strengths of the breed and how do you tackle the concepts of ‘beauty’ and ‘functional correctness’? AHM | 112
The Arabian breed is the original horse. Arabian Type covers all the strengths of our breed. Our Arabians are bred to look beautiful, move beautiful and have a long lasting endurance to perform in any event. Conformation, great legs and feet, and exceptional movement with charisma is a must!!! Which particular skills are necessary to beco-
me an accountable judge? Honesty, accountability, professionalism, experience and compassion for the Arabian horse. At least in Europe there have been many complaints about trainers abusing horses. Some of them have also been punished for drugging a
horse or for cosmetic alterations on necks, in addition to eye tattooing. Do you feel these are isolated incidents or do you feel they may be more widespread? I am not aware of abuse in Europe. Sometimes the handler’s get a bit aggressive, but not out of line. As far as the isolated incidents, I believe that even in Europe or the United

States these incidents have been punished to my knowledge. I believe ECAHO, AHA and USEF are doing an amazing job of policing the welfare of our horses, regardless of breed.
cost, you can only do what you can afford. After that, you need to decide how to enjoy your horse whether an Arabian or any other breed.
Do you think that the Arabian World has been a bit in a downtrend lately? Many blame the decline on politics and the cost of showing. What are your feelings? I believe the Arabian horse is on an upswing around the world. Cost of showing has always been expensive “to be the best you can be”. My advice: trainers, breeders and owners stay the course. If there is some politics going on. FIX IT!!! Personally, I’m proud of the horses I’ve judged and how they placed. It’s a tough job, but I’ve cherished every moment looking at these beautiful animals.
If you were empowered to effect change in the Arabian World, how would you go about it? Just promote! Share the love for the Arabian Horse. And all of us that love the Arabian Horses promote them as the amazing animals they are! Just share the love of the Arabian Horse!
Do you feel with the politics and the high cost of showing in rated shows, that many Arabian owners should consider Open Shows? Do you see this as a viable alternative to promoting the versatility of the breed? I truly believe that even if it’s an Arabian horse or any other breed, you need to show it where it’s competitive and can win. If it’s
Do you feel like leaving a message to the readers of this interview or to those who are willing to get to know you better? I just want to say “Thank you”! The Arabian Horse and all the people, places and horses I’ve met along the way. It’s amazing and I appreciate the opportunities that I’ve had. And look forward to many more. Mr. Terry, thank you very much for your contribution. It was an honor to interview you. May the Arabian horse cast a spell on us and keep us together forever and ever!

n this series, we would like to introduce young, up and coming stallions from around the world that have the potential to become super sires and ultimately add a new dynamic to your breeding program. The first stallion hails all the way from the beautiful, picturesque Spanish island, Mallorca and his name is BV Unik.
SHANGHAI EA
BV Unik (Shanghai EA x Flavia) is a breathtakingly beautiful, five year old, grey stallion that was bred and is owned by Bautista Vich Stud. The family have been breeding and loving the Arabian horse since 1991. They have been one

of the forerunners in preserving and carrying forward the history and lineage of the Spanish Arabian horse. BV Unik’s pedigree is an amalgamation of Spanish, Russian, Straight Egyptian and some Crabbet blood. His sire, Shanghai EA (WH Justice x Salymah EA), is a multiple International Champion and a sire of champions around the globe. While his dam, Flavia (Thamil x Uztariz), a foundation mare of Bautista Vich Stud, garnered numerous titles at the Mallorca Championships and other regional shows in Spain. What makes this pedigree so spectacular is the fact that both BV Unik’s paternal and maternal grandsire’s are considered to be two of the greatest stallions to grace the face of the planet. WH Justice (Magnum Psyche x Vona

Sher-Renea), known to all as “The Champion Maker” has forged a unique dynasty in the industry, one that is filled to the brim with exotic faces, sublime beauty and championship garlands from around the world. Thamil (El Namib x Hadi), on the other hand, was a multiple Spanish National Champion title holder as well as the sire of a countless number of Spanish National

Champions, and is to this day, considered as one of the best Spanish stallions. Add to this already illustrious pedigree the influences from World Champion Carmague, World Reserve Champions Khidar and Ansata Sinan as well as three 3 crosses to the immortal El Shaklan, and one can with confidence say the BV Unik has been blessed with the best.
Xaia BV - Gold Medal Champion Filly - Silleda Int. Show 2018 - once shown, once champion
While BV Unik has been used minimally in the Bautista Vich breeding barn, his ability to cross well with mares of a different phenotype and genotype and consistently sire foals of excellent quality is evident. At his home stud, BV Unik has four foals: 2017 filly Xaia BV (ex AJ Narida), 2018 colt BV Ypnotik (ex RHR Bellacontessa), 2019 filly Safira BV (ex Fer Safiya) and 2019 filly Macarena BV (ex Magnolia EA). While each foal possesses their own uniqueness, all have pretty, dry faces with very refined muzzles, wide foreheads, long legs and elegant movement. BV Unik offers breeders the chance to add Spanish blood that comes with the ever-famous athleticism, correctness and beauty to their breeding programs, but a modern day, almost exotic type. An almost perfect blend of yesterday’s heroes with tomorrow’s stars.

ince its very inception the Paris World Arabian Horse Championship has been working non-stop to promote the Arabian horse industry and upgrade the breed’s standards. Under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty Mohammed VI, King of Morocco, the pageantry was held from 29th November to 1st December 2019 at Parc d’ Expositions hall 5B Villepinte, France. With CENECA as a sole owner of the event, the lead of Show by President Mr. Jean-Luc Poulain, and the entire Organization provided by Comexposium. The highly skills of: Mrs. Jessica Gordon – Manager of the Salon du Cheval, Mrs. Laurence Boccard – Show Manager of the World Arabian Horse Championship, Mrs. Christianne Chazel and Mrs. Dominic Briot as Technical Counsellors were blended into a fantastic refreshed team that proved to be very efficient and professional. Each of them carried out their duties doing their best in a very smooth way. A top professional panel of international judges was this year composed by: Mrs Annaratone-Ferraroni Maria (Italy); Mr. Holmes Terry (United States); Mr. Huemer Fer-
dinand (Austria); Mr. Lieblang Steve (United States); Mrs. Norden Ann (Sweden); Mr. Rocco Luiz (Brazilian); Mr. Shaarawi Ali (Egypt); Mr. Veray Marc (France); Mrs. Weidner Michaela (Germany). As DC´s: Dr. vet. Abdelwahab Bin Ali Amira, (Arab Emirates); Dr. vet. Malak Benamar, (Marocco) ; Mr. Jean-Bernard Kupaj, (France) and Mrs. Christine Valette, (France). Ringmasters of this exceptional arena: Mr. Alain Ladek, (France) and Mr. Bertrand Valette – (France). The elegance of the show-ring was echoed in the sumptuous seating areas and the public audience with an all-pervading Arabian kind of style. Each horse entry was beautifully conditioned, carried out, and presented irrespective of their owner, handler, or country they competed for. The best of the very best of the breed fought to claim the ‘Title of Title’ until the end of the championships when the final results were announced. The Paris World Championships 2019 were a sensational edition last November and a first-class ending of the 2019 European show season. Therefore, thanks to: President Mr. Jean-Luc Poulain, Mr. Laurence Bauccard, Mrs. Jessica Gordon; Mrs. Christianne Chazel and Mrs. Dominc Briot. On the whole, another great achievement that keeps this annual event at the very ‘Top’ of similar organizations.

I’ve loved and ridden horses all my life, but my love for the Arabian horse started at about 12 years old. I was introduced to the Arabian breed at St. Croix Training Center in Hudson WI. Our now 1 year old son shares the love for horses just as much as we do. I’m beyond thankful for having the opportunity to be involved since I was a little girl. I don’t think there’s any words to explain how grateful I am for the experiences I’ve had, the people I’ve met, and the life I’ve lived because of the Arabian horse.

MAZOUNAT ALWADI Montasir Al Rayyan x Bisaan Al Naif & Mr. Hamad Bin Quraya
ALWADI STUD
The story of Alwadi Stud was created M Dhahran M 2005, in a region located in Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia, when Hamad Bin Awad Bin Quraya was given an Arabian horse magazine by a good friend; It was love at first sight. He initially ended up buying a race horse, though Hamad’s real passion got ignited by the Straight Egyptian. With an eye on preservation of the Arabian horse heritage, it is a responsibility not to be taken lightly, the breeding philosophy at Alwadi Stud aspires to be of world-class. It includes all strains and is dominated by the Dahman fine. The horses that carry the “Alwadi” name reflect the alluring type and charisma of what the Arabian horse is celebrated for since long rime. They are true royalty of the Arabian desert.

Hello Alessio. Hello Giovanna. How are you today? How and when did you first meet exactly? We are fine, thank you. We have known each other for ages. We used to be good neighbors.
Giovanna, what was your first reaction? We hugged each other and looked into each other eyes for hours and hours… What are in your opinion the key elements for a good and long-term relationship today? Communication and dialogue, but, above all, respect for each other ideas, feelings or personal interests. Some time only for you is also good. Our characters are too different, we always argue but we keep moving forward together you see. And will never break up!

It is about pure feelings, something almost visceral…It is something words cannot just explain you see. I sacrificed my whole life for them and I have built my future around them. I was born and raised every day as a trainer and handler of a stable, Al Rayyan Farm. I feel at home here. Work makes man noble, horses are my absolute pride. Giovanna, to what extent has Alessio’s passion for Arabian horses influenced your life? Do you like Arabian horses yourself? Why? I love horses but what a big statement.... Say, I am learning to live by them and appreciate them. I

admit they are majestic, imperial animals. Particularly, the Arabian horse is an icon of elegance, power and absolute beauty. Alessio’s constant involvement with Arabians made me travel the world, he knows so many people. I love mixing myself with different cultures. I love tasting different food, learning new habits, values and traditions of other human races. However, first and number one, Alessio and I would like to give our children a real chance to open their mind. They are now really ‘cosmopolitan’ kind of kids. They are so cute and so peculiar. We want them stay this way forever… People, describe an average day with your Arabians. This is an easy one. No doubt, their life-style is

the one that fits us better. We work to live over here, not the other way round. In this country, the sun kisses you since the first hours of dawn, it keeps kissing you as the day unfolds and, believe me, this will put you in a very good mood for the rest of the day. We are always surrounded by respectful people. They are happy to let you in their homes and their hearts… By their local rites of hospitality, they want to teach you their culture, their traditions and their values. For example, “Have you ever tried tea with fresh ripe dates? Absolutely gorgeous! You should try one”. Alessio, do you participate in beauty competitions? Of course! Both local and international. I always feel blessed each time I am given the chance to participate in one of them. How is life in Doha? Do you have any children? How many? Will you educate them to love and respect horses? Living in Qatar is just amazing, it is a great place. We have two children, a boy whose name is Mayo. I share with him the same passion and love for horses. Then, we have Myosotis, one year younger than Mayo. Our little daughter is
getting used to horses little by little. How do you see yourselves in ten years? Ten years? Make it twenty... In old age, I see my wife and I in a nice house in front of the sea, I can fish any time of the day, and Giovanna walks barefoot on the sand. In those days, our children will probably be living elsewhere…Maybe in a wonderful place in the world. Alessio and Giovanna, will you please leave one last message for our readers? Be free. Never think you can please everyone, enjoy life more, dare more, make the most of your time and never miss a good chance. Take some risk, test yourself, it will only help you to grow. Let your children go, encourage them to leave home and discover the world. Beautiful things are often around the corner. You can get to know the world and hold tight to your roots at the same time. Thank you very much Alessio and Giovanna. Speaking to you was so inspiring. On behalf of the entire Arabian Horse Magazine Team, I wish you the very best in your future life together with your children and amazing horses!

Muranas Jassehr, in an Egyptian type, is the ‘apple of the eye’ of Michaela Weidner from Murana Arabians in Germany. This Koheylan Adjuz grey stallion was born at Murana Stud in 2007. He is sired by the stallion Major. A stallion formerly leased by Murana Stud and now a very successful show horse in the Middle East. Major is sired by the Straight Egyptian stallion El Allah Abu (Thee Desperado) and comes out of the fantastic broodmare Marischka (Plakat) – who was awarded with the title of ELITE mare in Germany. A title some broodmares or stallions receive for their out s t an d i ng offspring. The dam of Jassehr is one of the most successful broodmares of Murana Stud, the beautiful Jana el Bri. Jana el Bri came to Murana Stud as a yearling and has produced some fantastic foals, which gave her the ELITE title as well. The sire of Jana is the exotic CH El Brillo. A son of El Shaklan and out of AZH Basknaborra. The dam of Jana is Julliana el Jamaal who is by the legendary Ali Jamaal and out of one of the best broodmares in Brazil: NV Justa Dream, who is also the dam of the unforgettable Jullye el Ludjin. exotic pedigree. His big dark eyes, his exotic face, well-shaped neck, smooth body and spectacular movements have gathered him fans all over the world. Also the judges have always been charmed by this exotic stallion. In 2008 he achieved the gold medal unanimously at the show in Exloo, The Netherlands. That same year he was also chosen as the National Champion of Germany. In 2009, Jassehr won the gold medal at Kauberplatte again unanimously and also won the Breeders Cup. At the stallion license that same year, he took home another Gold medal. In 2010 he went to the International A-show in Wels, Austria, to compete against the big boys. He did well and got awarded with the Bronze medal. In Ströhen that same year, he took home the Gold again, which he repeated at the Breeders Cup in Chantilly, France in 2013. In 2015, Jassehr conquered a second place in Menton, France and he has been named Silver Champion Stallion at the Al Khalediah Arabian Horse Festival in Poland in 2016. He had been brought from home just for fun. Now at the age of ten, Jassehr has reached a re-

Interviewed by Sonja Smaldone
Horse training and handling is a tough profession for a man or a woman. But Chandler Pace Kozikowski is undaunted. His love for horses is overwhelming to the extent of spending twenty-four hours with the most elegant animal in the world. Kozikowski lives in Poland where he trains and looks after many of the Arabian Horses standing at JP Training Centre. Hello Chandler. Just to set the scene with our readers, will you please give us some background to you, your family and education? I’m a middle-aged guy who works with horses every day, I like what I do and it makes me very happy. Before I started to work with horses, I graduated in Economics at University, and I have always been a very active person. I did a lot of training during my life, maybe that’s why I’m not so bad at running with horses...
How did this passion you have for Arabian horses begin? To what extent has this love you have acquired for the Arabian horse affected your life? The beginning is simple and her name is Joanna. All started when I met her, and she showed me how special horses can be. My life changed totally, I knew it from the beginning that she would bring mess into my life, but I must say that I like this mess and it’s the best thing that could ever happened to me. For sure, in the very beginning, I didn’t expect to become a handler, but I knew that horses were getting more and more important to me. When she was only a little girl, Joanna used to spend all of her free time in the stable, so it was obvious that if I wanted to be with her, I needed to like what she loved in the first place. After a couple of months, we started to work together. Now it’s been 14 years and we own our JP Training Centre so I can say that Arabian horses have changed my life completely and I’m really happy about it. Chandler, have you developed a systematic program for handling Arabian horses. Can you describe this program? How have your handling techniques evolved over the years? I think every trainer has his/her own way of training horses. For me the most important thing is the horse, I know it may sound banal to you but it’s the basic of our training program. I like when a horse feels free and comfortable when I’m standing next to him. We try to build self-confidence in horses
AHM | 188
AHM | 189
Is there a limit to what an Arabian horse can be taught through handling? For sure there is a limit but every horse is a different one. What I mean by that is not every horse is born to be a super star in the show ring. For sure, we can develop horses’ skills by rigorous training, but, the final result depends a lot more on a horse and his/ her mind.
during the training. Our horses work really hard every day but they also have their own time in the pastures with friends, when they can clear their heads and have normal horse life. We try to keep them in a good mood and not to put much pressure on them.
AHM | 190
What, in your opinion, really defines a good Handler? What do you need to become a successful one? For me, a good handler is a person who loves and understands horses without any mental reservation. There’s got to be a connection between a handler and his/her horse. It’s easy to say that, but it’s not easy to see it in the show ring. To beca-
me a successful one, I think you need a lot of hard work, talent and lots of luck and, of course, you got to have a great horse at the end of your lead. Chandler, how do you feel about the showing environment? Do the most deserving horses in terms of today’s standards really win at shows? I think that as long as many people are involved in it, there will always be there as many different opinions and points of view. As a handler, I can only hope that my horse will do the best performance he/she can do, and the rest is in judges’ hands. As long as my horses do their best, I’ll be very happy anyway. What are your favourite bloodlines? The answer is simple. I’m Polish and this is what I love. For
sure, I especially like the famous P-line from Janow Podlaski’s. Everybody knows that Pinga is the Love of my life! I guess you can feel something like that just once in your life. And I felt this with her. She represents everything I love in Arabian horses: not only does she carry so much “beauty” and Ara-

AHM | 192
bian “type”, Pinga also has an “extraordinary personality”. And, then those beautiful black eyes...Every time she looked at me before entering the show ring, I would feel we were just unbeatable... Which Training Centre are you working for at the moment? How did it all start? We opened our own Training Centre in 2016 after we left Janow Podlaski State Stud where we had been working for six years. You can say that JP Training Centre is our little baby that started to grow really fast. Share with us most exciting moments at the 2019 All Nations Cup in Aachen. For me the highlights of all the Show were the Senior Mares Classes and their Championship. Just by standing between all those stunning mares, it made me feel so special! I need to mention Atius O and his Bronze medal though. He is an amazing show horse which never refuses to give me back all I have taught him, and I ask for when we are in the arena. Atius O always shows himself 120%, he is a great horse but also an incredible daily partner. How important are the Fairs of Arabian horses? I think they are really important. It’s your opportunity to promote your own Arabian horses, but also to meet up and attract new people. It’s time when people from all over the world can meet each other and compare their horses or breeding programs, and, of course have fun with it! How and where do you see yourself in ten years? I hope I will still be doing what I love and always be surrounded by beautiful Arabian horses. I hope that my life will bring me joy, happiness and as much satisfaction as I have now. Chandler, will you please leave a final message for the readers of AHM? I wish you all the best and have fun with Arabian horses. May this journey continue for all of us! Thank you so much Chandler. This was truly inspiring. On behalf of the entire AHM Team, I wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavours!

INTERVIEWED BY SONJA SMALDONE
“My love for the horse is immense. This creature is one of the greatest and unique spirits in the universe. The very name Horse signifies wildness, freedom and escape. I frequently use the image of the horse as my personal avatar. The idea of this animal is a symbol of human unification with nature, identifying the horse as a friend and ambassador to the animal kingdom. Without the horse we humans would never have survived in the cruel wilderness of the ancient world. I see the horse as a gentle loving friend, a link to nature, and a powerful ideal of beauty”.
Hello William! Just to set the scene for our readers, will you please share with us some background to you, your family and your education?
My background was a time of immense trauma because I could not study art at school as this option was not available. Without this outlook for my passions life became unbearable and I became very depressed and subject to suicidal thoughts. Did you know that a dolphin will drown itself if it is not permitted to swim free? In this way the creature strives to allow its spirit to escape. My favourite animal is Quatzalcoatlas. It is a giant pterodactyl the size of a biplane that existed at the end of the cretaceous period, 65 million years ago. As a child I read about this creature, a real life dragon that mastered the skies and flew across continents. When I found out it was extinct a great sorrow enveloped me. In my early life I was obsessed with science fiction and read copiously the novels of Asimov and Brian Aldiss Brave. New World and the Foundation trilogy took hold of my mind. Later I got interested in superhero graphic novels, stories and comics. The visual dimension of the human figure in action and adventure captivated my imagination. Later I became aware of the ecological crisis. Humanity increasingly is destroying the life support systems of planet earth. This informed my outlook on life and I trained initially as a landscape architect. This proved to be something of a disaster. My mind is not adapted to designing drainage details and car-parks. I failed this course but decided to study an Environmental degree in Geography instead. About this time, when I was still very young, I went on a lovely family holiday to Tuscany, Umbria I think, where we stayed in a villa surrounded by olive trees overlooking a valley. I spent hours drawing the ancient olive trees with their knurled lattice work surfaces. So, I travelled to Yorkshire instead to study Human Ecology, a type of Geography. In my spare time, I walked across the fields and woodlands of the Yorkshire countryside and painted miniature oil landscapes.
Can you talk a little about your formative years as an artist? Have you been trained, and if so from what Institution? Or are you self-taught?
My formative years were a battle to find myself as an artist against overwhelming odds. It seemed as though I had to fight a mythical battle against powerful supernatural forces that ranged across the infinity of dimensions. I was always interested in art and so I taught myself to paint using manuals of the great artists across time and the many biographies, feasting my eyes on the work of Picasso, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Matisse, Max Ernst, anything I could find. When I finished my academic studies I set up a studio in Yorkshire, Northern England, and proceeded to devote myself to art, filling my room with drawings and paintings. At first I drew images of people from the TV, mutating them into writhing monsters or abstract impressionist shapes, layering them with colours.
Is there someone special who has encouraged your work as an artist? If yes, tell us about this person and how they have influenced your path as an artist?
Sometimes you meet a special person who becomes a guru or a great influencer in one’s own inner spiritual life. I think a great influence was the artist and musician Mick Karn, who became famous in the early 80s with the avant-guard ambient funk pop band Japan. He sadly died 10 years ago. He was a

painter, sculptor, musician of many instruments, a real polymath. His music is incredibly hypnotic and pagan, with a strong Middle Eastern flavour. He was seen as the greatest living bass player, if not surely the most original. His sculptures are like a new form of Giacometti, and his paintings are abstract and figurative, embracing the modernist themes of colour saturated dynamism and neo-platonic primitivism. Secondly, I met this girl in Yorkshire who was very beautiful and taught me to look inside myself to find deeper inner meanings to life and its mysteries.
How did you first get into painting?
I first got into painting gradually in my spare time then more and more until it took over my every waking moment and my every thought. I knew I always wanted to be an artist but I never knew how to do it. Sometimes I wished I could be normal like everyone else and be a doctor, lawyer, or teacher. I don’t think a life in the professions could ever be compatible with the life of an artist. An artist is like a swimmer who dives into the collective unconscious to bring up pearls from the depths of the human mind. Human beings have subjected themselves to apocalyptic wars, famine, genocide, and environmental destruction and ecological ruin. They are facing the greatest challenge of all time, global heating, caused by the release of carbon dioxide. It is my honour and great duty to warn the humans they are facing extinction unless they embrace the necessary changes in their technology, infrastructure politics, behaviour and attitude to nature and to each other.
What is your favorite subject to paint? Why?
My favourite subjects are usually imaginative mythical poetic stories based on daydreaming, nightmares of technology gone wrong, or animals and nature, and people and places. Sometimes they are abstract colour field impressions of landscapes. Sometimes I focus on a particular place like pagan Rome and the ancient Middle East. Often the horse will appear as a symbol of spiritual freedom, galloping into the distance, or swimming along coastlines.
AHM | 233
The horse has become a very important theme for me, representing wildness and existential, spiritual freedom.
How would you describe your painting style?
My painting style is a mixture of impressionism, expressionism, abstraction and surrealism. I like very much to explore the texture of paint and the coarseness and vigour of the fractured painted surface. Paint itself has a sculptural essence in that it fragments on the brush into infinity of lines, sub-textures, caresses, and gestures.
Which painters do you most often use for reference? Why?
In my mind there exists a sort of holy trinity if you like, of Picasso, Van Gogh and Cezanne, followed by the surrealists especially the women, Dorothea Tanning and Frida Kahlo spring to mind. People like De Kooning, Soutine, Dali, Ernst and Magritte also come to mind.
What is your favourite genre of music to listen to while painting?
Music? I listen to Sidi Mansour, by Rimitti, an Algerian pop artist who makes phenomenal swirling archiopeggios of sound. Japan and Joy Division, the Doors, Gary Numan, followed by Bowie and Roxie Music. In the nineties, I largely ignored the phenomenon of Britpop, with its conservative guitar melodies recycled from the sixties, and instead became obsessed by the ambient trance bands of transglobal underground, black

star liner and loop guru. Also Arcade Fire, Hannah Peel, Goldfrapp and Anna Calvi. Also a lot of traditional Arabic and Indian music feature heavily with its quarter tone chants and pulsing rhythms. At the moment, I am into Jonny Marr, the guitar player from The Smiths, who has made two excellent albums of cascading, uplifting sonic landscapes, a sort of cross between the happy Mondays and Joy Division. I think Marr is one of the finest guitarists as well as David Torn and Robert Fripp.
William, maybe you could tell us about some of your journeys… Which is your favorite destination to travel to?
I have travelled far and wide in many different times. This is the opening track called Decades by Joy Division. I have in fact travelled all over Europe, North Africa, South Africa, Turkey and the good old U.S.A., sadly in a state of advanced decay in its current administration. I was in California a while ago for an exhibition in Los Angeles, a solo show in Beverly Hills, at an art-space called AD FINE arts. I found the squalor disturbing. If America has the money to go on all these indeterminable wars why can’t it look after its own citizens? In the bus into downtown LA I saw tented cities on the sidewalks stretching as far as the eye could see. One of the greatest and most exiting journeys was to visit my uncle in Ceret, near Perpignan, a department of La Française in Catalonia, in the shadows of the Pyrenees. We journeyed all the way from Britain via Paris. The French landscape revealed its secrets from the high speed train, tra-
versing the plains of the north, through the mountainous Massive Central, and the marshes of La Camargue. Here I saw flamingos, dragonflies, and majestic herds of wild horses riding the waves of the salt marshes. I have had exhibitions in art-spaces in Izmir, Turkey, in the U.S., in Columbia and in several places in Britain. Despite what I said, I still have a fondness for North America. It has a great art-scene and a lot of potential. Unfortunately, its populace is suffering great injustice with the highest levels of poverty and early death from malnutrition and ill health anywhere in the world surrounded by astonishing wealth at great proximity. So while it may be a good place to be an artist, the quality of life is pretty terrible for the average citizen. However, I have always been interested in India. It is an ancient civilization with many artifacts and monuments surviving which have been destroyed elsewhere in the world due to religious bigotry and intolerance. This is one place that I have always been interested in.
They say if you could be anything but an artist, don’t be an artist. What career are you neglecting right now by being a full time painter? The idea of another career is impossible. Art chooses you, you don’t have a choice. It could be a bit like voodoo in that respect. However, if I could live a thousand lives, one of them would be a politician, helping to fight
for social justice and environmental issues; one would also be a warden on a nature reserve, and another would be a rock star, poet and so on. Or, perhaps, a quiet life as a lawyer or a doctor.
If you could meet any artist who is no longer living, who would it be and why?
If I could meet a dead artist maybe Picasso. I would like to go out drinking with him in Paris, and meet his bohemian friends, or maybe go to the theatre with him. Perhaps to see a production where he has designed a stage set. I don’t think I would get on with Van Gogh, he seems too intense, and I already feel like I know him through his work. Probably Francis Bacon because I know people who used to hang out with him as he lived in SoHo, in London, when it was once a seedy, atmospheric slice of real London life.
Do you have any upcoming exhibitions or collaborations?
I am planning a new exhibition in a place called Galeria Pilares in Columbia.
What are your hopes and dreams or future goals, where do you see yourself in the next 10 years? I hope to live in peace and harmony in a world that is overcoming the problems of climate change, deforestation ad environmental collapse.
