MIDDLE EAST 2022 DEAR BREEDERS AND LOVERS OF THE ARABIAN HORSE, Amazingly, it’s here again! A new year has already begun. Every year around this time, so many of us decide to change something in our lives. New Year’s resolutions can range from simple desires to seemingly comprehensive plans for a better life. We all, however, share the hope that something will change, and our life will be different (and better) in 2022. In Italy, the epidemiological trend of the Covid-19 pandemic has seen a significant increase in infections after the holiday
inspiring moments came along the way when we interviewed Dutch judge Mrs Paula Bohmer, UAE breeder Abdul Rahman Mohamed Sharif AL Baidhaei of Al Jawaher Stud, Italian handler Stefano Zaniboni, Belgian photographer Glenn Jacobs, and the US Riding Couple composed of Phillip and Kelle Soucier. They are all drawn to the Arabian horse, though for very different reasons and for very different ends. As part of our ‘educational concept’, we continue to devote space to studying the most refined Straight Egyptian bloodlines, thanks to Domenico Tocchi’s captivating article about
season. The Ministry of Health’s new rules and guidelines have reminded us all to take responsibility for our safety in everyday life, and it will be necessary to cling to them at shows as well. While in Italy, the show calendar is still under construction, in the Middle East, the show season has already started with the Ajman Arabian Horse Championship held between January 6th-8th at the prestigious Ajman Equestrian Club, near the city centre. The tour went on with the participation in the Al Dhafrah Arabian Horse Championship from 19th to 23rd January 2022, and it will continue by taking part as a Media partner in the next most crucial competitions in this part of the world throughout winter. So stay tuned! In this special edition, some rewarding and

It has taken all our hard work and sacrifices over the past year and the beginning of this year to produce the 2022 Special Middle East Edition, which is the fruit of all our efforts. But that only has allowed us to get to current levels, and that will enable us, in the coming years, to provide our loyal readers always with the best of everything ‘that is newsworthy’ in the magical world of the purebred Arabian Horse.

INTERVIEWED BY SONJA SMALDONE Judging Arabian horses’ conformation takes practice, but anyone who has spent time around these beautiful creatures can learn to do it. ttending the World Arabian Horse Championships in Paris is always a chance to be dazzled by the most anticipated event of the year dedicated to Arabian horses, the supreme achievement that is special and that all lovers of the breed dream of celebrating. On the occasion of its 40th anniversary, the event was held from 10 to 12 December 2021 at the Parc Expo Porte de Versailles, in the centre of Paris. Nearly 24 countries were present, and one hundred horses had registered for the competition. After another year of Covid, the organisers of Ceneca, the officials of the show, and the participating owners and breeders wanted the best for this event to find a unique way to win their horses in the most coveted ring. This year, the general set up and the show rooms were indeed exclusive! Luxurious installations, a perfect distribution of booths representing each breeding program, tasteful music, and a spectacular lighting system managed to impress participants and visitors for three days. This is the place where you can marvel at the most beautiful purebred Arabian horses in the world. No question about it! Ten judges of international provenance were appointed to evaluate the registered horses, which got divided into six classes according to age and sex. From the Vip tables, we followed the evaluations made by Mrs Claudia Darius (Germany) - Mrs Bérengére Fayt (Belgium) - Mr Eric Gear (France); Mr Ahmed Hamza (Egypt); Mr

For the 2022 Special Middle East edition, I had the chance to interview Phillip and Kelle Soucier from Texas. Kelle has grown up around horses, her first horse was a flea-bitten Arabian, CP Mentor. He was her first horse and her first best friend. Less we know about her husband Phil, so it was quite interesting to dig into the past of this fortunate man and find out what’s like to share his life with an accomplished horsewoman like Kelle… Hello Kelle, Hello Phillip. When did you first meet? We met on April 28th 2017 at a country music festival called Stagecoach in California. I was there on a girls’ trip, not wanting any kind of relationship, and he was there with his boys, not wanting any relationship, but yet he took my hand that night and never let it go. He also told me that night, that his name, Phillip, means “Lover of horses.”
Portrait of an Italian Handler Stefano Zaniboni
Phillip, when and how did you ask Kelle to marry you? Kelle had been talking about wanting a place to call home since I met her, so earlier this year I surprised her with a new house and got down on one knee at the same time. It’s a much longer story, but I think she was really surprised. Kelle, what was your first reaction? He really fooled me, he and the agent made me believe the house was sold to someone else. Then a few weeks later told me the house might be available again and asked if I wanted to go see it one more time. While walking around, Phil surprised me and told me it was actually our house, and he already bought it. Then he got down on one knee with a ring. I almost fell over! What a dream. What is in your opinion the key elements for a good and long-term relationship today? Communication and respect are key. But also you have to fully accept each other and who you are. We

She loves to put on a show, with her persona presented through her attractive look, the way she grabs your attention as she snorts using the power of her whole body, and her high tail carriage which she carries high showing off her pride and self-confidence. sired by Royal Asad, owned and bred by Cindy McGown and Mark Davis of Royal Arabians; he is an exotic son of the leading sire *El Tino and out of Lumiar Ethna. Wilma PCF’s dam is the Brazilian National Gold Champion mare Sophie ELS, one of Psynergy Equine’s foundation mares, she is a daughter of PA Gazsi out of Nahja ELS. She consistently inherited her progeny with a very showy attitude and exceptional movement. Wilma PCF’s royal pedigree is certainly
one of the reasons why she is so special. She combines Brazilian flare and American powerhouses in a unique mix that have produced a force to be reckoned with. She is destined for greatness, just as her ancestors have proven to be, both in their show careers and their breeding capabilities. She is truly an epitome of Arabian type, all put together in a bay filly that is becoming even more beautiful as she grows. Wilma PCF has taken her time off since the US Nationals to rest, mature and
prepare for what 2022 has in the books for her. She has grown beautifully; she has been put in the hard work with Sandro Pinha at Arabians International getting ready for where she would like to preform her next big show. The Al Khor Stud is excited for her to compete at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show in February 2022! Keep a look-out for Wilma PCF at Scottsdale, follow her career. We certainly will be doing that, and we are excited to find out where she is going to go next!

To them, go our most heartfelt thank you for hosting and backing both competitions. The International B Cup and the European Championship met with resounding success, inside a Pala Volkswagen stormed by the public and professionals. Everyone worked hard, taking care of each other despite the hardships of the moment. But, what won in Verona first and foremost was the equestrian sport sublimated by the elegance and the beauty of the purebred Arabian Horse. Arabian Insider and Arabian Essence, among the best-known service videos in the industry, recorded dizzying numbers, with peaks of nearly 150,000 spectators who watched the event live from all over the world on their smartphones. We on the AHM team are happy to have made our presence as a media partner with other famous publications in the industry. Our greatest wish is certainly to see you all again in the new year in the company of whom we love the most: the purebred Arabian horse!

INTERVIEWED BY SONJA SMALDONE Judging Arabian horses’ conformation takes practice, but anyone who has spent time around these beautiful creatures can learn to do it. Judges usually look for a combination of balance, structure, muscling, gait, and breed-specific features. For the 2022 Special Middle East issue, I had the chance to interview Ms. Paula Böhmer from Aalten,
background to you, to your family and education please. My farm is in Aalten, the Netherlands, where I live with my daughter Sophia, who is 4 years old. We have between 20 and 25 pure-bred Arabians at home, as well as some ponies. My passion for horses began when I was 6 years old and started riding ponies.
The Netherlands. She was pleased to walk me through the main aspects of her professional experience in judging Arabian horses.
When I was around 10 years old, I got my first own horse, which was a pure-bred Arabian named Evita. Via the Dutch studbook AVS and Mr. Pieter Stoop (who is the organizer of Arabian Horse Weekend) I became more and more involved in events specifically for Arabian pure-breds. This is how I started visi-

ting national and international shows, including the All Nations Cup in Aachen and the World Championships in Paris, and became fond of the breed and its scene. Besides my courses in horse breeding and judging, I studied photography and art and thus I am a semi-professional photographer besides being a horse breeder. When did you start getting interested in the pure-bred Arabian horse? Which are your favourite bloodlines, if any? I was hooked on the films of the “Black Stallion” and since my first own horse was an Arabian, there never was a true other breed for me. For me, each bloodline has its positive aspects, but in general the Egyptian (reAHM | 88
lated) bloodlines catch me. It is also these lines that I like to include in my breeding program. When did you become a judge? What specific preparation did you get? I officially became a judge in 2016 (when I was admitted to the ECAHO list). Since I was 15 years old, I did some informal “internships” on premium inspections and along the side line at shows with Toto Modderman-van Dorssen (a former international A judge for the Dutch studbook). After that, I did a training program for breeding judges at the “Koepel Fokkerij”, an overarching association for horse breeding in the Netherlands. This included a theoretical exam and a practical internship at three different studbooks of different horse breeds (I did the Dutch Shetland studbook, the Dutch Welsh Pony studbook and the Dutch riding horse and
pony studbook “NRPS”). I also followed an internal course at the AVS studbook and of course I followed the ECAHO program. What do you feel has been your most recent rewarding experience as a judge? I felt it as a great honour to judge the Qatar Nationals in November 2021. This show was so rewarding due to the very large number of horses that we had to judge. What horse or horses have you judged that have left the greatest impression on you? There are several horses that left a great impression, but at a show in Syria in 2019 I had to judge some classes of authentic Syrian Arabians. These horses and these bloodlines were the base of the modern show Arabian you see in the arena’s around the globe nowadays, and their history and legacy are a
very valuable contribution to the breed. I was really impressed by the authenticity and pureness of these horses, their background and their overall appearance. What are, in your opinion, the strengths of the breed and how do you tackle the concepts of ‘beauty’ and ‘functional correctness’? The strength of the Arabian breed is its hardness and stamina which make it a really good utility horse. Furthermore, the Arabian is super friendly and people oriented, which makes it a good family horse. Its sensitivity and kindness make that a connection, maybe even a friendship, is created between the Arabian as a horse and its human owner. AHM | 89
AHM | 90
Beauty and functionality come together in the overall balance of the horse. A good Arabian for me is a horse with good conformation, that is in balance and being able to move with/over its whole body. Together with a showy attitude and not losing that tender, kind glance I mentioned above, makes a horse a true Arabian for me. Which particular skills are necessary to be-
come an accountable judge? A proper judge needs to have a good eye for the overall balance and details of a horse that I mentioned before. You need to know how the equestrian body functions and you also need to be able to determine any defaults and/or pains in a horse (on the spot in real life I mean, outside the checklist from a book). And of course, and this may be an open door, a good judge at all times is independent, impartial and neutral. To what extent has the current global health crisis been affecting the industry? Has it impacted your job? I would like to keep this answer short, as COVID-19 and the current global health crisis to some can be a sensitive subject. Luckily, I have been able to judge some national and international shows in the past two years, however due to the ever changing measures in the several jurisdictions, it may sometimes be difficult and uncertain for me whether a request for judging can be accepted. For example, ad hoc and immediate lockdowns and quarantine may be problematic in order to return home to horses and family on schedule.
Paula, what else would you like to achieve at this stage of your professional career? In the end, I would like to become an international A judge for ECAHO and educate ambitious people in becoming better horse judges and breeders. What else do you do when not judging? Taking care of my lovely, sweet daughter Sophia, my horses and the other animals at my farm (like dogs, cats and chickens). Furthermore, I really like to go out for a nice dinner, when I get the chance. If you could effect change in the Arabian Horse World, how would you go about it? I really would love to see that the Arabian horse, and horses in general, are seen as an individual, a friend, a family member, and not as a status symbol. Therefore, I advocate for better welfare at shows and less pressure on the horses, so that they can show their real beauty and kindness in a more natural way. Also, I would like to emphasize that it is better to breed less horses of good quality than to breed average horses in bulk. Would you like to leave a final message to
the readers of this interview? Enjoy and connect with your horse(s) and share your passion with friends from the scene, by celebrating each other’s successes! Thank you, Paula. We enjoyed your interview very much!

On the occasion of its 40th anniversary, the event was held from 10 to 12 December 2021 at the Parc Expo Porte de Versailles, in the centre of Paris. A FEW COMMENTS IN CONCLUSION Since its beginnings, when it was a magnificent European Championship at the Salon du Cheval, Paris has become a true World Championship of the Arabian horse, thanks to the great minds behind it. First by the founding Fathers, then by the many industrious people who have taken turns over the years to make it a dignified event. The championship will face many challenges in the near future. COVID-19 certainly remains one major issue, but we hope that the championship will stay in Paris, as it would not be the same magical event in any other place. We at the AHM team are very grateful for the invitation to this 40th anniversary and hope that, as media, communication, and graphic design service providers, we can continue to play our small part. We thank all the esteemed members of Ceneca, and the hardworking managers involved. In particular, we thank Ms Laurence Boccard, Show Manager, and Ms Véronique Oury, Logistics Manager, for their kind support during the preparation phase. And, of course, a big thank you to Madame Christianne Chazel and Madame Dominik Briot, who have long served us as technical advisors and show consultants. We hope to see you all again in 2022!
We AHM | 119
both are a bit of wild, free spirits and I think from day one we have let each other be who we are. Tyler Rich has a great song called “Leave Her Wild” and I think that is really fitting for us. Kelle, please, we would like to know everything about your life and involvement with horses. Where does this passion for horses come from? What role has it played in building your life? Do you own purebred Arabians yourself? What is your relationship with your horses? My passion for horses is something I was born with. There is no other way to put it. I thank my parents greatly for always having horses as part of my life because I don’t know who I would be without them. They are literally not just a part of my life, they
AHM | 120
are a part of my soul. Everything I am, who I am, I have learned from horses. Phil had to learn right away that they were not some phase or hobby in my life. They are everything in my life. When I am having a bad day, if I feel sick, or if I’m stressed out, all I have to do is go see my horses and life is instantly better. How Lucky Am I that my biggest vice in life, my biggest addiction, is something that makes me feel so happy! It may not be the cheapest thing in the world, but it’s OK because I don’t shop for nice clothes or purses or shoes. All my money goes to my horses. I have had Arabians or half Arabians all my life. Right now, I currently have a big black Half Arabian that looks like Black Beauty, and I have a Friesian.
AHM | 121
Phillip, to what extent has Kelle’s passion for Arabian horses influenced your life? I knew nothing about horses when I met Kelle. Soon after, I realized how many people have horses. It seems like everywhere I go now, horses get brought up. Before Kelle, I never knew anyone with horses. She has really opened my eyes to a whole new world. I know I’ll never be as “horse crazy” as Kelle is, I’m not sure anyone will be, but I definitely have a full new appreciation for them. Kelle has helped me learn a lot. I now can spot an Arabian instantly AHM | 122
and can see the differences between them and other horses. I love Arabians, they are so beautiful and really have a ton of personality. I love our Friesian too. I ride him because he puts up with me. I know we will have horses always, and I know I will learn a lot more over the years. Kelle tells me I need to show! We will see about that. Guys, describe an average day with your horses. When we go to the barn as a Family, we normally bring the dogs. Phil throws the
ball around for the dogs while I work the horses. He helps me with bath time and treats. Some days we will both ride, but there aren’t many trails around, so the rides are pretty short. Kelle, do you still participate in beauty competitions? I only did one age ago when I was 18… The only competition for me are the horse shows!
Will you educate your children to love and respect horses? I will absolutely raise them to respect and be kind to all animals. I hope they love horses. Noah actually does a lot! But, I won’t push it on them. Horses will always be my thing, and I would love to share that with my children, but it’s OK if they find their own thing too. AHM | 123
AHM | 124
How do you see yourselves in ten years? In ten years, I’d love to be living on a ranch with my family. I dream of having my horses in my backyard along with a ton of other animals. I’d be so happy just taking care of them and my family all day, every day. “Always be yourself. Unless you can be a unicorn, then always be a unicorn”. Kelle, I found this quote on your Facebook timeline. Can you elaborate on this a bit more? I don’t have a great answer for this other than! I think of someone who is a “unicorn” as being a person who is that all around amazing soul that you hear about but don’t believe actually exists. So if you can be a unicorn to someone, then you have accomplished making them believe in the unbelievable. Unicorns do exist :)
Phillip, will you please leave one last message for our readers? I had always wondered why my parents would name me something that meant “Lover of horses”. It didn’t make any sense to me until I met Kelle, then it all made sense. We were meant to be. I never thought I’d be a “Horse Husband” but I feel like the luckiest man on earth. Kelle is the kindest, most compassionate, loving human I have ever known and if horses have anything to do with that, then everyone should get a horse. Thank you so much, guys, for your precious contribution. On behalf of the entire Arabian Horse Magazine team, I wish you all the best and a bright future together with your amazing horses!

ECAHO C-NATIONAL SHOW 16th - 18th December 2021 Text by: William Richardot de Choisey - Fawaz Gamal - Sonia Smaldone Translation by: Sonia Smaldone

Horse training and handling is a tough profession for a man or a woman. However, Stefano Zaniboni from Italy is undaunted. His love for horses is overwhelming, to the extent of spending twenty-four hours with the most elegant animal in the world. Stefano lives in Chiari, Lombardy, where he owns and runs his own Zaniboni Training Centre. Hello Stefano. Just to set the scene with our readers, will you please give us some background to you, your family and education? Hello everyone! I’m Stefano, and I’m 34 years old. I’ve been part of this world for a while, practically all my life. I inherited this passion from my grandfather, who was a breeder and owner of trotting horses. But I met my first Arabian horse thanks to my father. He is also a professional Handler. Furthermore, at the age of 18 he gave me my first mare, a daughter of Padron Ghibli. With her, I totally fell in love with the breed. I worked for a while at his training centre, then, at the age of 28, I embarked on my own path by opening my centre in Chiari (Brescia), north of Italy. How and when did this passion for Arabian horses begin? To what extent has the love for the Arabian horse affected your life?
AHM | 152
As I said earlier, my father owns a training centre. So, I was lucky enough to grow up around this beautiful breed. He taught me everything I should know about Arabian horses. I got influenced by this work so much that it has become all my life! Stefano, have you developed a systematic program for handling Arabian horses at Zaniboni Training Centre? Can you describe this program? How have your handling techniques evolved over the years?
AHM | 153
In my centre, I have not set up an identical work scheme for all subjects because, I believe, that each horse has its own personality and a different attitude to work. It is necessary to understand that first, and then create a specific work program for each horse to enhance its potential as much as possible.
must be a person who takes care of every single detail of every single horse in the preparation at home.
Is there a limit to what an Arabian horse can be taught through handling? Who has been the most demanding horse to train? No, in my opinion, there is no limit because the Arabian horse is an extremely intelligent and cooperative horse. So far, I have never found a horse that is particularly hard to train. More than anything else, we must understand that each has its personality and character, you just need to find it out!
What, in your opinion, really defines a good Handler? What do you need to become a successful one? A good handler must be a true horseman in the first place. A complete figure not only interested in “standing” or three minutes performance in the arena. He
AHM | 154
Starting from the psychophysical well-being of the horse, differentiating the work horse by horse because as I said earlier each horse has a specific personality. To become a good handler, I believe, you need good will, sacrifice, passion, and attention to detail. You must know from the start that you never stop learning because every single horse always has something new to teach you.
AHM | 155
AHM | 156
What are your favourite bloodlines? Why? I do not have a particular bloodline that I prefer to the others. I like the correct, complete horse with beautiful movement. Stefano, how do you feel about the current show environment? Do the most deserving horses in terms of today’s standards really win at shows? Today’s shows are unfortunately a bit closed and give
ses, for example… I wanted to diversify a bit by also giving room to sports Arabian horses to enhance their characteristics of elegance and trainability. In my centre, I specialized in western disciplines with good results. Last year, we participated in the European Championship of sporty Arabian horses, which took place in Austria with three stallions prepared by us. We got excellent results! I also started with the discipline of attacks, always with the Arabian horse.
little visibility to new fans of the breed. In my opinion, the most deserving subjects do not always win.
How and where do you see yourself in ten years? I always hope in this wonderful world.
Which show have you been to as a Handler most recently? In which country did you experience better quality of the organization of the shows? The last show I attended was a few weeks ago in Doha, Qatar. Recently, I have been to other countries such as Egypt, the Emirates, Kuwait, and I have found out that today the organization of shows at high levels is almost everywhere.
Could you leave a message for AHM’s readers at the beginning of the year, Stefano? The message I would like to send to all readers is not to stop only at beauty competitions. The Arabian horse deserves to be admired in all its forms and qualities that it can express also in other sports. And it is our task as breeders to enhance them.
What other equestrian sports disciplines do you run at your centre? You might want to tell us something about your leisure or under-saddle or chariot hor-
Thank you so much, Stefano. May all your dreams come true!

Mahroussa (1919). Described as an extraordinary beautiful mare, Mahroussa became the symbol of the classic Arabian Horse for her royal pedigree to breeders and enthusiasts for many years. Mahroussa’s parents belonged to H.R.H. Prince Mohammed Ali Tewfik’ luxurious stables, one of Egypt’s most prestigious royal breeding programs of the first half of 1900. This mare possessed the most exclusive bloodlines from Ali Bey Pasha Sherif ’s herd while having the same sire line as Nazeer. Mahroussa was bred by H.R.H. Prince Mohammed Ali Tewfik at his Manial Stud on Roda Island nearby Cairo. She was a wonderful grey mare, a daughter by the stallion Mabrouk Manial 1912-1933(Saklawi II x Tarfa), while her dam was the AHM | 204
Seglawieh Jedranieh Ibn Soudan mare called Negma (1909). In turn, Negma (1909) was a daughter out of the mare Bint Yamama (ca.1895) and by the stallion Dahman El Azrak (1893) (Jamil El Ahmar x Farida El Debbani), a grey Dahman Shawan, son of a mare carrying bloodlines from the Abassieh herd owned by Abbas Pasha Hilmi I. Bred by Khedivè Abbas Pasha Hilmi II, the latter a brother of Prince Mohammed Ali, the mare Bint Yamama (ca.1895) was a maternal sister to the famed stallion Mesaoud (1887) by Aziz 1876-1899(Harkan x Aziza), bought by Lady Anne Blunt in winter 1888-1889 and imported to Crabbet Arabian Stud in England in January 1891. Their dam was the mare Yemameh (ca.1872), bred by Ali Bey Pasha Sherif. She was a daughter to
the white Seglawi Jedran Ibn Sbeyni, Zobeyni (1840), which Abbas Pasha Hilmi I purchased in the desert from Ibn Sbeyni belonging to the Mehmed tribe of the Fedaan Anazeh Bedouins. Yemameh’s (ca.1872) dam, the grey Ghazieh (ca.1850), was also a desert-bred mare. Abbas Pasha Hilmi I had bought her from Ibn Soudan of the Ruala tribe. The sire of Bint Yamama (ca.1895) was the white Seglawi Jedran Ibn Soudan stallion, Saklawi I (1886) that Ali Bey Pasha Sherif purchased in the desert from the Ruala tribe. Later, he sold him to Khedivè Abbas Pasha Hilmi II, where the stallion lived until 1909. Mahroussa was the full sister of the stallion Khafifan (1916), sold in 1924 to Count Jòsef Potocki, owner of the well-known Antoniny Stud, in Poland, where he sired great racing champions. The stallion Jasir (12.05.1925), imported from Weil-Marbach German State Stud in 1930, was also a full brother to Mahroussa (1919). Among Mahroussa’s maternal sisters, we find the mare Zahra (22.03.1922) by Gamil Manial 15.04.1912-1928(Saklawi II x Dalal) that went to Inshass Stud; and the mare Aziza (15.04.1926) by Gamil Manial and out of the mare Roda (25.03.1931) by Mansour 19.04.1921-1940(Gamil Manial x Nafaa El Saghira). Both Zahra (22.03.1922) and Roda (25.03.1931) got imported into the United States in 1932 by Mr William Robinson Brown. At that time, Mr William Robinson Brown owned the reputed Maynesboro Arabian Stud in Berlin, New Hampshire. In spring 1932, he sent his Agent and Man-
ager, Mr Jack Humphrey, to Egypt to purchase horses from H.R.H. Prince Mohammed Ali Tewfik. In that import, besides the mares Roda (25.03.1931) and Aziza (15.04.1926), there was the newborn foal Silver Yew 22.03.1932(Ibn Rabdan x Aziza) lying still under his mother, and 1 the stallion Nasr (Manial) 23.08.1918(Rabdan x Bint Yamama). At the beginning of the sale negotiations, both H.R.H. Prince Mohammed Ali Tewfik and Dr A.E. Branch, Veterinarian of the farm, made it clear that neither Negma (1909) nor her daughter Mahroussa (1919) was for sale as those mares were both too precious for the herd. However, Mr Jack Humphrey managed to buy three of Mahroussa’s foals on behalf of Mr William Robinson Brown. These 2 were: the young stallion Zarife (30.04.1928) by Ibn Samhan 18.03.1919-1940(Samhan x Nafa El Saghira), and the mares Hamida (06.04.1929) by Nasr (Manial) and Hamama (15.05.1927) by Kawkab II 21.06.1910-1932(Saklawi II x Om Dalal). Zarife was an excellent stallion owned by H.R.H. Prince Mohammed Ali Tewfik that can only get 3 found in the descendants from the Inshass Stud mare called Ragaa (06.01.1937) (Rasheed x Saada). Hamama (15.05.1927) was a magnificent mare, perhaps the best of this import. Sad to say, the Straight Egyptian bloodlines of these last two mares got dispersed, but Hamama (15.05.1927) appears in the pedigree of the 1985 World Champion Camargue 1979-2004(White Lightning x Velvet Shadow) and many more International Champions. On May 2, 1932, Mr HenAHM | 205

ry Blake Babson purchased two of Mahroussa’s sons (1919) from H.R.H. Prince Mohammed Ali Tewfik for his stables in Grand Detour, near Chicago, Illinois. These were the stallion Fadl (17.06.1930-12.09.1963) and the mare Maaroufa (07.09.1931-12.09.1963), both by the stallion Ibn Rabdan (17.05.1917-1944) (Rabdan x Bint Gamila). This import also included additional horses acquired from the herds owned by the Egyptian Royal Family. To start with, Bint Serra I 03.03.1923(Sotamm x Serra) who was a Seglawieh Jedranieh mare bred by Prince Kemal ed Dine Hussein. She also carried with her the little colt Metsur (04.01.1932 ) by Rustem 1908(Astraled x Ridaa); Bint Saada 21.12.1930(Ibn Samhan x Saada), a Seglawieh Jedranieh mare from the Royal Agricultural Society (RAS). Last but not least, Bint Bint Sabbah 19.05.1930(Baiyad x Bint Sabah) and Bint Durra 01.07.1930(Ibn Rabdan x Bint Durra), two Dahmah Shahwaniya broodmares from The Royal Agricultural Society. In the end, all the offspring of Mahroussa (1919) crossed the Atlantic Ocean to build their great dynasties in the US. In 1936, Mr William Robinson Brown closed Maynesboro Stud. His horses got taken by General Jacob McGavock Dickinson for his Travellers Rest Stud in Franklin, Tennessee. Travellers Rest Stud was a stud farm built-in 1792 by Mr John Overton near Nashville, Tennessee, well-known for the stunning quality of their Morgan, Trotter and Saddle Horses. In 1930, General J. M. Dickinson introduced Egyptian and Polish Arabian horses and moved the stud farm to Del Rio Pike, near Franklin, Tennessee. In 1946 Travellers Rest Stud moved to Santa Barbara, Califonia, to later move back again to Tennessee in 1948. In 1949, this herd producing many American Domestic Arabian horses got dispersed to end up in the hands of a buyer from Cuba. Eventually, the son of Mahroussa (1919) called Zarife (30.04.1928) AHM | 206
got sold to Mr Wayne Van Vleet for his Lazy VV Ranch in Boulder County, Colorado. He became the leading stallion on the farm and also worked with cattle. The mare Hamama 15.05.1927(Kawkab II x Mahroussa) was a Travellers Rest Stud mare from 1933 to 1946. She got crowned National Champion Mare in 1934 and got second place in the Three-Gaited Class at the National Arabian Show that year. The mare Hamida 06.04.1929(Nasr “Manial” x Mahroussa) was also a superb foundation mare at Travellers Rest Stud. At the time, Mr Henry B. Babson was starting that particular selection process whereby his horses became readily recognizable in the world. It was a selection based on solid families of broodmares with compact type. As grown-up mares, they became stronger but lost little elegance, following the numerous crosses with Ibn Rabdan, a very popular stallion in Egypt of that period. At Mr Henry B. Babson’s stud farm, the mare Maaroufa 07.09.1931-12.09.1963(Ibn Rabdan x Mahroussa) got greatly admired for her type and beauty. She became the favourite mare in the barns and left outstanding progeny. Furthermore, Maaroufa was the only female from this family, among all the mares imported in the US to produce Straight Egyptian daughters, continuing her family of pure Egyptians. Fadl 17.06.1930-12.09.1963(Ibn Rabdan x Mahroussa) became the model of the versatile Arabian Horse of
5
that age. He was a stallion with a solid and wellbalanced body. He possessed excellent shoulders and a deep chest. He had perfect limbs and a strong gaskin, a well set arched neck and a beautiful mitbah, a

masculine and well-shaped head, with large well-set eyes at the end of a broad forehead, deep jaws and short nicely shaped ears. He participated in Western Pleasure, English Pleasure, Three-Gaited and Polo competitions, won a 100-mile Endurance race, and got ridden by kids from time to time. Fadl was a charming stallion who conveyed a harmonious body with beautifully curved lines, great athletic ability, intelligent personality and magnificent disposition to his progeny. Fadl was a prolific sire and notably impacted the breeding selection of those times. Among his sons, we remember the first Straight Egyptian produced by Henry B. Babson, Fay-El-Dine 1934-12.09.1963(Fadl x Bint Serra I), an elegant grey stallion of outstanding quality. This Saklawi Jedran Ibn Sudan subject resulted from an excellent combination of mares carrying Nazeer’s blood. We mention the black Fa-Serr 10.07.1947(Fadl x Bin Serra I), foundation stallion at

Henry B. Babson’ stud farm, a Seglawi Jedran Ibn Soudan Halter Champion, with a classic type and prominent action in his gaits, known for his production of the bay and black offspring. But also the bay Dahman Shahwan, Fabah 1950(Fadl x Bint Bint Sabbah), a correct stallion with perfect movement and exceptional

Endurance characteristics who left high-quality progeny. Lothar (13.08.1955-30.12.1978), a classic and charismatic chestnut stallion, double Fadl, out of the mare Habba 1945(Fadl x Bint Bint Sabbah), a Dahman Shahwan mare bred by Mrs Kathleen Ott, the wife of Mr John Ekern Ott, in Mathews, Virginia. Mrs Kathleen (maiden name Llewellyn) and Mr John Ekern Ott were the parents of Miss Jane Llewellyn Ott (04.10.1927-24.04.2013), artist, researcher, and horse lover born in Chicago, Illinois. In her youth, Miss Jane Llewellyn Ott lived in Hinsdale, Illinois. Later, she moved to Mathews, Virginia with her mother, as they possessed the family business and the adjoining stud farm. I wanted to pause for a moment upon Miss Jane Llewellyn Ott because she intensely cooperated with her mother in the drafting and editing of the celebrated ‘The Blue Catalogue’, published in 1961, and featuring the first American Arabian Horses recognized as Asil (those known as Blue List). In 1969, this publication got revived to build Al Khamsa, and the list of horses got updated to include horses existing outside the United States. We should remember many other sons sired by Fadl. But, I will only mention the second Straight Egyptian produced by Henry B. Babson, the bay Faddan 1935(Fadl x Bint Saada). He was a Saklawi Jedran Ibn Sudan stallion that can get defined as one of the most beautiful subjects and best stallions ever produced from this bloodline.
Fadl was also a sire of extraordinary mares. I will first quote the grey Fa Deene 1937(Fadl x Bint Serra I), a refined Saklawiya Jedraniya mare (1919) descending like Mahroussa from the desert bred grey mare Ghazieh (1850 ca.) owned by Abbas Pasha Hilmi I. Fa Deene (1937) gets remembered for being the dam of two stallions owned by Henry B. Babson: Ibn Fa-Serr (1960-04.03.1986) by Fa-Serr (1947) and out of the mare Hadbah (1957-26.04.1976) by Fabah (1950). Hadbah can get found in the pedigree of many Straight Egyptian specimens. On the other hand, Ibn Fa-Serr (1960-04.03.1986) was a stallion endowed with great movement and athletic ability, a well-balanced body and curved lines. He was charismatic, intelligent and with a beautiful disposition and conveyed powerful shoulders and a beautiful vertical neck set to all of his progeny. Moreover, his grey progeny tended to have more refined heads. Fa Deene (1937) was also the dam of the chestnut mare Khedena (1948) by Khebir 1942(Fadl x Bint Bint Sabbah), which in turn is the grand-dam of the stallion AK El Sennari 21.02.1980(Ibn Moniet El Nefous x Il Bint Khedena) from his dam line. AK El Sennari was a typey stallion. He was an expression of elegance and refinement, having all those great qualities typical of his family. He got named National Stallion Champion in Belgium. AK El Sennari’s maternal grand-dam, the black mare Fa Dena 1962(Fa-Serr x Khedena), also built a family that generated beautiful and refined black horses. I will mention the black mare SF Haley’s Halima 1986(Seer Pasha x Halim’s Legacy by Ansata Ibn Halima x Mona Dena). And, the black mare Ses Bint Fabo 1987(Fabo

x Halima’s Legacy), both bred by Dr Patterson W. and Mrs Sherry Moseley, Sherbrook Egyptian Stud, Winter Springs, Florida. The mare Khedena (1948) delivered two more daughters by Fay-El-Dine (1934- 12.09.1963): the grey Fay Khedena (1952) and the chestnut Khamsa (1953), two mares that left outstanding offspring. From Khamsa’s bloodline (1953), we also find the mare Ra’Din Khebira 1977(Ansata Ibn Sudan x Ra’Din Hilal by Sireff x Allah Ateyyah). She was a prolific dam and, among her daughters, we find the mare Ses Khebria 1991(Orashan x Ra’din Khebira), bred by Dr Patterson W. and Mrs Sherry Moseley, Sherbrook Egyptian Stud, Winter Springs, Florida. She became a World Reserve Junior Champion Filly at Salon du Cheval in Paris and American Champion at the Egyptian Event of 1991 and 1994 when she got crowned Senior Champion Mare and Supreme Champion Mare. Fay Khedena (1952) was the grand-dam of the stallion
12
Fabo 1962(Fabah x Misimma by Fa-Serr x Fay Khedena), bred by Mr Bruce C. Huss, Mendota, Illinois. Unfortunately, even the mare Fa Deene (1937) got bred several times with not Straight Egyptian Asil stallions, so she did not leave relevant progeny as Egyptian females. Fadl’s cross with Bint Bint Sabbah 19.05.1930(Baiyad x Bint Sabah), a Dahmah Shahwaniya mare, was perhaps the most successful one made by Henry B. Babson. I have already spoken about the great stallion Fabah 1950(Fadl x Bint Bint Sabbah), sire of The Shah 1966-1979(Fabah x Bint Fada), a 1978 British National Champion and World Champion Stallion at the Salon du Cheval in Paris in that same year. The Shah 1966-1979(Fabah x Bint Fada) was a

ons. Fabah (1950) was also the sire of the great broodmare Sabrah (1964-02.07.1992), bred by Henry B. Babson, a granddaughter to the mare Bint Bint Sabbah (19.05.1930) from her dam line. Sabrah had three crosses with Fadl, and she was a daughter out of the broodmare Serrasab 1959(Fa-Serr x Fay-Sabbah). Sabrah produced two prominent sisters by the stallion Ansata Ibn Halima 17.09.1958-17.09.1981(Nazeer x Halima). Ansata Sabiha (01.03.1968), who left a remarkable family, and FA Halima (1970), who became 1980 US National Champion Mare, Canadian National Reserve Champion Mare, and 1979 World Reserve Champion Mare in Paris. The cross between Fadl and Bint Bint Sabbah (19.05.1930) also produced Fa Habba (1947), dam of the bay Falima (1965- 16.06.1988) by Ansata Ibn Halima. She was a mare with a stunning appearance, harmonious and proportionate, progenitor of the prominent Nile family standing at

Saklawi Jedran Ibn Soudan stallion descending from the family of Maaroufa (07.09.1931-12.09.1963), bred by Babson Arabian Horse Farm and exported to the United Kingdom in 1969. He was too a Sire of ChampiAHM | 211
Ansata Arabian Stud. Those who met the grey Habba 1945(Fadl x Bint Bint Sabbah) considered her the most beautiful of all the maternal sisters, and one could see that when looking at her progeny. Her son Lothar (1955-30.12.1978) was the last born of Fadl’s Straight Egyptian sons. He was a classic and typey subject of roan chestnut colour, whose coat had a particular brilliance in the light of the summer sun. Lothar was a magnetic and elegant horse, truly a great performer when he danced with his arched neck and high-tail carriage similar to a palm leaf. The cross between Fadl and the mare Habba (1945) was crucial. This mare was also the dam of two important international sisters: the chestnut Sirhabba (195910.03.1978) and the grey Asal Sirabba (195815.03.1982), both daughters by the stallion Sirecho 20.04.1939(Nasr “Manial” x Excocorda “Leila II”), both bred by Mrs Kathleen Ott, in Mathews, Virginia. Sirhabba (1959-01.03.1978) is worth remembering for being the dam of two very positive stallions: the black AK Sirhalima (1972- 04.11.1997) by Ansata Ibn Halima, bred by Mrs Margaret and Mr Floyd E. Reid, Norman, Oklahoma. He got exported in 1973 to Australia, where he became famous under Al Karim Sirhalima. The other was the bay stallion Char Echo (1964-04.12.1988) by the homozygous black stallion Negem 1956(FaSerr x Fay Negma by Fay-El-Dine x Maaroufa), bred by Mr Charles K. Krausnick, Lamar, Colorado. Char Echo looked similar to Lothar in terms of presence and charisma and generated winners of the US National Team. In addition, the dark bay South African National Champion Stallion, which was named Anchor Hill Omar (1969) out of the mare Anchor Hill Bint Gamila 1960(Hadbah x Gamila). Asal Sirabba (1958-15.03.1982) was the dam of the grey mare Siralima (1971) by Ansata Ibn Halima, bred by Mr Robert E. Cowling, Houston, Texas. When she was standing at Mr Jarrell McCracken’s Bentwood Farms, Waco, Texas, she produced esteemed mares by the stallion Ibn Moniet El Nefous 26.03.1964(Morafic x
AHM | 212
Moniet El Nefous). One of these mares was the typey big black-eyed AK Latifa (1977), first sold to Mr Lyle and Mrs Virginia Bertsch, Zahara Arabian Stud, Fort Wayne, Indiana. In 1993, AK Latifa (1977) got exported to Israel and moved to Ariela Arabians, Bnei Zion. She was the dam of the famed International Champion Laheeb (02.01.1996) by Imperial Imdal 29.06.1982- 05.12.2003(Ansata Imperial x Dalia), bred by Ariela Arabians. Laheeb produced champions all over the world and returned home after many trips. He got looked after like a prince at Ariela Arabians. Laheeb was the first Straight Egyptian stallion to go on a lease to the Polish State Stud Farms. To name a few victories, he got named 1999 Junior Champion in Kauber Platte, Germany; 1999 European Reserve Champion Colt; 2003 and 2004 Israeli National Champion Stallion; 2006 Egyptian Event Reserve Supreme Champion Stallion, US and 2009 Israeli WAHO Trophy Award. AK Latifa (1977) was also the dam of three champion females, including Imperial Kalatifa (1992) by Imperial Al Kamar 02.05.1987- 13.10.2018(El Hilal x Imperial Sonbesjul) bred by Mrs Barbara A. Griffith’s Imperial Egyptian Stud, Parkton, Maryland. Imperial Kalatifa became a champion mare, whose most important achievements were: 1994 Israeli National Champion Filly, 1995 Middle East Reserve Junior Champion in Jordan, and 1997 Israeli National Champion Mare. The genetic strength of this family stemming from a daughter by Fadl was particularly evident in Imperial Kalatifa (1992), who also produced the award-winning mare Loubna (1997) by Imperial Imdal (29.06.1982- 05.12.2003) at Ariela Arabians. Loubna’s notable victories include 1999 Israeli National Champion Filly; 2001 Israeli National Champion Mare; 2003 Champion Mare, Towerlands, UK; 2004 All Nations Cup Champion Mare; 2004 World Champion Mare, in Paris; 2004 ECAHO Cup Champion Mare; 2006 European Champion Mare and 2007 Middle East Champion Mare.
