BROOKFIELD PLACE SYDNEY A NEW FRONT DOOR – AND NEW CONNECTIONS – FOR SYDNEY’S CBD Brookfield Place Sydney, designed for Brookfield Properties by Make Architects with Architectus as Executive Architect, is a mixed-use scheme which includes the revitalisation of the pedestrian Transit Hall on George Street for Wynyard Station. The project demonstrates the true benefits and power of urban densification. Alongside 75,000m2 of premium office and retail space, it comprises upgraded multimodal transport links, new and renewed public connections that prioritise the pedestrian, and two restored and fully-integrated heritage buildings. The complex project has united four separate sites including the former Menzies Hotel, Thakral House, and the retained Shell House and Beneficial House, assembling them into one reinvigorated block that rises out of the reconfigured transit hall of Wynyard Station. Our contemporary civic design reimagines the ground plane, making public space the focus, with a strong understanding of how people move around the city.

Our contemporary civic design reimagines the ground plane, making public space the focus, with a strong understanding of how people move around the city.
Previously, passengers were funnelled down to Wynyard Station via concourse passageways that ran either side of a central core which felt dark and unwelcoming. From very early in the design process, Make unlocked the potential of the site by raising and suspending the central core, using mega-columns in the boundary walls to support the building’s shear load, much like the flying buttresses of a Gothic cathedral. This simple design execution of hanging the core has created a new triple-height ‘Urban Hall’ filled with daylight, transforming the arrival experience for visitors and commuters. This space now acts as a sweeping new front door for Sydney’s commuters on a scale commensurate with Wynyard Station’s status as one of the CBD’s busiest transit hubs. It also provides a new pedestrian route from George Street through to Carrington Street and Wynyard Park beyond, right underneath the offices as before, but this time across the full 25-metre width of the site. The hanging core itself has been celebrated – clad in almond gold stainless steel with vertical glazing, it stands out against the GRC-coffered ceiling and provides views into the commercial lift lobby from below and vice versa.
PAGE 7 - ARCHETECH
MAKE ARCHITECTS The site accommodates a change in level which enables the George Street elevation to focus on the public, with the station entrance flanked by flagship retail and escalators leading down to a lower-concourse food hall and the transport interchange. Pedestrians can also now move straight through the site, under the tower to Carrington Street and Wynyard Park. The Carrington Street elevation is home to the commercial office entrance. A calmer location away from the bustle of George Street, it provides a different perspective facing Wynyard Park with a nod to the street’s history as a prime location for large corporate headquarters in the 1920s, and to current aspirations to return the address to its former glory. The tower is sculpted to respond to the rhythm of its city block, appearing as a series of interlocking orthogonal blocks of differing scales. This contextual approach gives the building a sense of permanency and belonging. At 133 metres high, the central and tallest block accentuates the overall height, while the other two-step down to reduce the overall volume, preserve sunlight and respond to the views from the various perspectives. Stepping the blocks also creates six roof terraces offering occupants 1,700m2 of outdoor space, alongside a further 280m2 of green roof. Each glazed panel of the tower’s facade is defined by bronzecoloured anodised aluminium fins to emphasise the verticality of the scheme. The fins vary in depth to respond to different solar shading requirements on each elevation.

of the building’s historic character, and a new public rooftop restaurant and bar, housed in two glazed pavilions, will bring public F&B to the rooftop for the first time. Over 3,000 sandstone-coloured faience tiles were replaced with new tiles hand-moulded by specialist craftsmen. The south elevation has been retained and restored, and it is here that it joins with the new commercial tower, with internal entrances punched through into the tower’s 10-storey atrium. Merging the two has delivered flexible floorplates of up to 3,200m2, which are among the largest in Sydney. Externally, the combination of old and new breaks up the block externally into seemingly smaller separate entities. The Grade A commercial spaces have maximised flexibility and adaptability, from collaborative workspaces to trading floors. The design integrates 21st-century technology and prioritises wellbeing. Wynyard Park plays a key role in this, with views into the park and the tree canopy providing biophilic benefits. The entrance is marked by a double-height sculptural veranda, which echoes Sydney’s architectural heritage. Stepping inside, elements like a ribbon staircase and a Calacatta marble floor and walls, laid to simulate a continuous seam cut from the quarry, exemplify the level of quality.
transformational project in the heart of Sydney. Brookfield Place Sydney has been thoughtfully stitched into the fabric of the city and for the first time provides public access to the iconic Shell House clocktower via a rooftop restaurant and public space. The public transport interface and retail amenity have been transformed to the highest quality and new public through-site links established. Brookfield Place Sydney is truly a premium office location and reinvigorates the wider precinct surrounding Wynyard Station.” Brookfield Place Sydney is one of Brookfield Properties’ premium brand developments, one of only six in the world. It has the name Brookfield Place to distinguish its exemplary status in a range of criteria including outstanding transport connections, state-of-the-art building systems, premium workspaces, high-level retail amenity, leading sustainability credentials, 24/7 security, amenities for wellness, and curated placemaking activities. www.makearchitects.com
The office space has been left as headquarters for both Brookfield Properties Asia Pacific and the National Bank of Australia, as well as offices for Allianz, Hub Australia, Brookfield, Moelis and Clifford Chance. Simon Lincoln, Make Architects Asia Pacific Director said: “We are so proud of what has been achieved at Brookfield Place Sydney. This is a true mixed-use project which really demonstrates what urban densification can deliver, merging transport with retail and commercial and F&B to deliver a dynamic environment that benefits from the mix of uses and draws people in and through. Indeed, the design hinges upon this principle, and the key design move of suspending the core was all about prioritising that. It was a true collaborative team effort and leaves a great legacy for Sydney.”

HAIKOU INTERNATIONAL DUTY FREE RECEPTION CENTRE THE GATEWAY TO THE WEST COAST CITY THE INTERLACE Architecture, dating back to the Stone Age, has used the basic structure of wind to provide people with shelter from rain. On the basis of functionality, the pursuit of a more spiritual soul is injected. The building is located in the Haikou Binhai New Area, not only characteristic of a sales centre, but also a modern art gallery. It is the gateway to the west coast city and the spiritual fortress of this area. In the design, we use deconstructionist techniques to dismantle and reorganize the building wall, release the form and volume, and then realize the infinite possibilities of space by interspersing the blocks. The integration of this style school abstracts and simplifies the architecture, rendering it an artistic element.
ARCHETECH - PAGE 16

The project is functionally divided into two major areas - a marketing area and an investment promotion area. We increased the thickness of the outer wall to emphasize it and to form a strong architectural symbol. At the same time, windows and platforms are inserted into the wall to open the covered building to the city, which also introduces urban events into the building and becomes a place for the public to create events. The addition of circular elements further emphasizes the geometrical sense of the building. The curved wall is displayed at the opening of the outer wall, and completely different materials are used to form a visual focus on the facade. The interior is also interspersed with blocks of different shapes, forming a rich and varied space. In the choice of facade colour, we considered the city of Haikou’s warm and comfortable year-round climate, with sufficient sunshine, and chose white in order to make the building brighter and more refreshing visually. The large area of the white wall is like a pure canvas, with the light and shadow serving as pen and ink. Painting on the wall is reminiscent of traditional Chinese painting. The elevation material uses horizontal-grained panels and titaniumzinc panels as embellishments on the protruding walls and curved walls of the building. The white of the cross-grained board and the gray of the titanium-zinc board collide, forming a strong contrast. The texture of the two materials is derived from the skin of dried palm, which makes the building more textured and echoes the surrounding natural environment. The project is functionally divided into two major areas - a marketing area and an investment promotion area. In order to achieve the relative independence of the two functional areas and the integrity of the building, we arranged the volume in an L shape.
PAGE 17 - ARCHETECH

The marketing area is arranged along the main road and is more open. The negotiation area, located on the first floor, uses a large area of glass to render the interior bright and transparent to pedestrians. Excellent accessibility allows pedestrians to easily participate in activities inside the building. Compared with the marketing area, the overall investment zone is relatively closed to ensure the privacy of visitors. The function of the investment promotion part is developed along the city’s secondary arterial road. On the side of the street interface, the real wall is used to isolate noise, and the view opens onto the side facing the inner courtyard. Visitors enter the interior of the building through a cylinder of titanium-zinc plates. A terrace is set on the second floor to enjoy the view of the inner courtyard and the entire area. NEW SCHÖCK THERMALLY INSULATING WALL CONNECTION IN A CLASS OF ITS OWN Minimising linear thermal bridges at the wall connection to the floor, or floor slab, has been a perennial problem with reinforced concrete construction. However, a dedicated new solution – the Sconnex type W – has now been introduced by Schöck. A high-profile project involving the new Schöck thermally insulating wall connection is Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School, at Elstree in Hertfordshire. Recognised as being one of the leading independent boys’ schools in the country, it sets exemplary standards, not just in educational terms, but in its facilities as well. As demonstrated by the new extension to the Preparatory School.

based cube_design architects were commissioned to produce a concept design for three additional classrooms, along with the relocation of changing facilities. Jane Lock-Smith, the founder of cube_design and RIBA Client Design Advisor within the BSF programme, takes up the story: “The design is respectful to the style of the existing building, but offers a contemporary twist through the use of full height glazing and charred timber cladding. The use of a colonnade minimises the buildings footprint. In our detailing we took into account that around 40% of all thermal bridges in a building are caused by walls and supports. The Schöck solution offers an application-friendly, high-quality solution that contributes to a permanently sustainable building concept”.

BESPOKE KOCOON CUBICLE DELIVERED THANKS TO LEADING CUSTOMER SERVICE The Kocoon is a cubicle with a difference. With all the benefits of Kinedo selfcontained shower cubicles, the Kocoon differs with its luxury shower panels, rather than the glass internal panels that Kinedo cubicles are famous for. The cubicles are available in multiple sizes and are popularly used as bath replacement products. One customer, from the Midlands, was looking for such a product that would blend into the original décor of his smartly tiled bathroom and the beige patterned shower wall of the Kocoon looked like a perfect match. However, the standard specification of a recessed Kocoon - with two patterned end panels and a single plain back panel - didn’t meet his unique requirements. The customer not only wanted all three panels with the pattern, but also an alternative installation point for the shower valve and showerhead. Unable to support the request, the local plumbers merchant recommended direct contact with the Kinedo technical team, who provided personalized support for a personalized shower cubicle. www.saniflo.co.uk

ALUPROF
’WHAT IS LOW-CARBON ALUMINIUM?’ BY WOJCIECH BROZYNA - MD OF ALUPROF UK We are now faced with a target to reduce our global carbon emissions to zero by 2050, we have just less than 30 years to achieve this. If we can achieve this target, then we should be able to limit our world’s rise in temperature to just 2° compared to pre-industrial levels. Many scientific minds have been working on how we may achieve this target, but it eventually comes down to countries across the globe who need the determination and available investment to drastically cut carbon emissions. Will we achieve this goal? Well, there is still much work to be done and technology is rapidly evolving. Construction is just one of the areas identified by the United Nations, claiming that 11% of our total carbon emissions are due to our global construction activities. Aluminium, used extensively in external envelope applications, sits alongside other materials and construction activities that are under review. Primary aluminium production (new aluminium extracted from bauxite ore) is an electricity-intensive raw material to produce. Chinese prime aluminium production emits 20kg of CO2 per single kg of aluminium production. On average, globally, this drops to 16.7kg of CO2 per kg of aluminium production. A typical low-carbon aluminium however can be produced at around 7kg of CO2 per single kg of aluminium production by using renewable energy and recycled content. It is important to remember that it is the aluminium material itself, the ‘billet’ or ‘logs’ used for extrusion that is sourced as low-carbon, not the production of the profile itself. The production of prime aluminium has continued to take advantage of new technology to reduce energy consumption in its manufacture and its carbon emissions since aluminium became a commercially viable material in 1880 through the Hall–Héroult process. Energy consumption has been reducing on average by 1.2% per year over the last few decades, but in order to achieve a low-carbon aluminium product, much more is needed. The quantity of recycled aluminium used globally, sometimes known as secondary production, has remained relatively constant at 31-33% since 2000, with 34% used in 2019 the highest share during this period. As aluminium has a high value, collection rates are typically high, in 2019, collection rates for aluminium were over 95% for all new scrap (pre-consumer) and just over 70% for all old
There are various producers of Aluminium billet across the globe, all of who supply some low-carbon product, such as, EcoLum from Alcoa offering 4kg of CO2 per single kg of aluminium production, ALLOW from RUSAL offering 4kg of CO2 per single kg of aluminium production, CIRCAL 75R from Hydro offering 2.3kg of CO2 per single kg of aluminium production and our own group company, LowCarbonKety from Grupa Kety offering 2,79kg of CO2 per single kg of aluminium production. All of these low-carbon products are made up of up to 75% post-consumer scrap, approximately 10% pre-consumer scrap, together with a low content of primary aluminium and is then produced using renewable energy sources.
(post-consumer) scrap aluminium. We must continue to increase the collection of post-consumer scrap as it uses much less energy to recycle, just 10% that of primary aluminium.
ARCHETECH - PAGE 24
The problem we have is that low-carbon aluminium products are costly and in short supply, so why is this?
ALUPROF
“
Here at Aluprof, we source one third of our aluminium extrusions from our group company, Grupa Kety, where we offer a lowcarbon aluminium product and are working to further reduce carbon emissions. Referring back to the total recycled content of all aluminium supplied to meet the demand of 31-33% since 2000, we simply cannot get enough scrap to meet the demand. At a required total 85% recycled content (post and pre-consumer scrap) for this lowcarbon aluminium, finding the recycled content is difficult. There are also other issues to consider when specifying low-carbon aluminium, such as it cannot be used when an anodised finish is required. Why do we have a shortage of scrap? As demand continues to grow for aluminium and products using aluminium last longer, there is simply not enough to meet demand. It could be stated that specifying a low-carbon aluminium for a project only takes recycled content away from another project, so on a global scale, there is no benefit. What is key here is that technology is moving rapidly to increase the use of renewable energy in the production of aluminium and to reduce or capture CO2 during manufacture. We also must remember that we are not going to run out of the raw material to produce aluminium, as the raw material bauxite is the most abundant metal in the earth’s crust. Here at Aluprof, we source one third of our aluminium extrusions from our group company, Grupa Kety, where we offer a lowcarbon aluminium product and are working to further reduce carbon emissions. Two thirds of our aluminium extrusions supplied by Aluprof comes from other market sources. We can therefore offer specifiers any low-carbon product specifiers wish to use for their project, but this comes with the caveat of both possible cost implications and likely extended lead times for extrusions. Given the project requirements, should a requested low-carbon specification be achievable, then Aluprof can offer EPD (Environmental Product Declarations) to substantiate the source of the aluminium that Aluprof’s profiles will be supplied from. Extended lead times for products could impact the site programme, which in turn could incur additional carbon costs. On the other hand, some BREEAM credits could be available on a project by choosing low-carbon products, including aluminium. These issues highlight that every project is different and must be looked at in isolation. The key here is the need to get product suppliers involved at the early design stages to explore what is
possible. Aluprof have an experienced design team on hand who can explore these options and help choosing the right aluminium source and systems to suit any project. Since setting up the Aluprof Office at the Business Design Centre in London, the company has rapidly grown their specification influence in the UK with their high-performance architectural aluminium systems. Further expansion of the company’s headquarters in Altrincham now provides specifiers with meeting facilities and an extensive showroom of commercial systems to view. With overseas growth across Europe spreading into the Middle East and firm roots already in the East of the USA, the company has become a global player in facade supply. PROFAB ACCESS
INSTALLATION FOCUS THE KEY TO UNLOCKING INCREASED EFFICIENCY AND CERTIFICATION More than any other sector, the UK government has backed the construction industry as the leading force in driving economic growth and achieving financial stability, following the significant disruptions caused by COVID-19. Here Marcus Parnham, Commercial Director at Profab Access, explores how the building products industry is evolving to successfully support professionals in achieving an increased and more efficient rate of construction, whilst simultaneously meeting greater requirements for testing and certification. The building industry often leads the way out of economic crises, with 2021 being no different. Last year’s Queen’s Speech set out the government’s regulatory agenda and included new legislation on infrastructure and housing, which were specifically designed to place construction firmly in the vanguard of the nation’s economic recovery. However, government investment alone will not enable the construction industry to thrive. The repercussions of the last year have created greater focus on the role of innovation and product development, as professionals increasingly require new and enhanced building components that streamline the specification, installation and maintenance stages, without compromising on quality, compliance or aesthetics. This has led to the design and manufacture of a new generation of building products that reimagine traditional building practices to create new ways of working that increase on site efficiencies and reduce associated cost and resource implications, whilst also providing the highest possible standards in certification and safety. In order to successfully achieve this, manufacturers have had to re-assess established installation methods to identify how building components can be reimagined to support professionals in working smarter and quicker when on site. However, these products must also enhance the proficiency of the specification stages by being supported by essential certification and accreditation documentation to evidence compliance with relevant regulations. As part of this, it is critical that the products are installed into an approved construction in a method consistent with the sample originally tested. For example, with regard to doorsets, the installation process potentially poses a number of risks to the overall fire integrity of a wall construction through variables such as the packer type and intumescent mastic bead application. To overcome this potential gap in compliance, professionals should look to work with manufacturers that are taking this commitment to third party testing and certification even further through latest advancements in technology and product design, which are providing a revolutionary approach to the installation and maintenance processes.
ARCHETECH - PAGE 32
For example, Profab Access has identified an opportunity to reduce the level of components required to not only shorten fitting times, but provide the highest possible standards of fire integrity to futureproof a development against potential legislative changes. Its INTEGRA 4000 Series Riser Doors are now supplied with an expertly engineered PRECISION adjustable frame, which completely transforms the installation process for construction professionals and streamlines the specification process for architects and specifiers. The unique construction of the patented PRECISION adjustable frame, which enables the frame to be fully adjusted to meet the specific dimensions of each structural opening, also includes an integral intumescent strip to provide fire stopping between the wall and frame. This not only eliminates the requirement of packers and the reliance of the correct thickness of intumescent mastic bead, but most importantly ensures the compliance and adequacy of the entire installation, as its fire integrity performance has been sufficiently documented by an independent assessor. As a result, this also subsequently increases the efficiencies of installation and removes any potential margins for error, whilst also providing a complete trail of due diligence with both current and future requirements as the frame has undergone rigorous CERTIFIRE third party testing and certification provided by Warrington Fire as part of the entire doorset. Throughout 2022, the entire sector, from building products manufacturers, right through to specifiers and contractors, must continuously challenge themselves to review existing building practices to support successful innovation and collaboration, in order to drive the industry forward and set the economy on a stable footing in the years ahead. For further information on Profab Access and its range of riser doors, access panels, and steel doors, call +44(0)1827 719051 or visit www.profabaccess.com.

It’s Good To Be Back. And We’ve Got Plenty to Show Trade shows. Remember them? Yes, we’ve missed them too. Which is why we’ve been so looking forward to exhibiting at KBB 2022 (Birmingham NEC, 6-9 March). Sure, we’ve found a way to do things differently over the course of the pandemic. There have been virtual shows and digital conferences. We’ve kept the wheels of industry turning because we’ve had to. But at Sugatsune, we always say that business is about people. And there’s nothing like mixing with and meeting customers, colleagues and suppliers in person at events like KBB. So after two years, it’s just great that UK’s biggest trade show for the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom sector is back on again, the way it should be. From our perspective, nothing beats the opportunity to get out to events like KBB to exhibit our product ranges. We take a lot of pride in what we do. It’s a genuine pleasure to share our products with people and demonstrate what they can do first-hand.
From that groundbreaking concept, we have since developed a range of products that provide a complete all-round solution for full-length and heavy wardrobe doors. With the J160, we introduced a wide-angle opening option and added an integrated soft close damper. We’ve now included versions with push-to-open motion technology, different colours and cover plates. All manufactured to our exacting premium quality standards and with a lifetime warranty. On the subject of soft close concealed hinges, the Olympia 360 series delivers best in class precision close control for all sizes of cabinet door. Our Olympia hinges incorporate our patented Lapcon rotary damper with its unique five-point adjustment, allowing you to adjust the counterforce to suit the size and weight and door. With its sleek design, simple installation and three-point mounted adjustment, Olympia 360 hinges represent a premium solution for kitchen and bathroom cabinets.
Concealed quality
Similarly, for interior doors, the HES 3D range sets the standard in its class. Because the extended pivot arm used in conventional concealed hinges is limited in how much weight it can bear, we developed the HES for heavy interior doors weighing up to 125kg. The HES concept revolves around a reengineered butt hinge design. The single central pivot that you see when a door is closed is replaced by three to five rotating pivot points that are tucked away neatly in a recess in the door jam. When the door is shut to, you see nothing.
For example, we now have the most comprehensive set of concealed hinge solutions available on the market. Take the newly extended J95 series for starters. The original J95 heavy duty concealed hinge remains a unique product on the market. It’s the only option in its class purpose built for large wardrobe doors weighing up to 40kg.
As this innovation has been so successful, we have now extended it to products for smaller, lighter cabinet and wardrobe doors, too. With a total of 10 hinges in the range, HES is now by some distance the most flexible concealed hinge solution on the market, providing a pristine finish and immaculate motion for doors weighing from 9kg all the way up to 125kg.
That’s when our commitment to quality and excellence in design truly comes to life. So what have we got to show for ourselves since the last time we were at KBB? The pandemic hasn’t stopped us developing our range. We’ve been busy over the past couple of years. KBB 2022 marks the first opportunity to share the fruits of our labour face to face.
Lateral thinking As with our concealed hinges, we now offer more lateral opening solutions than ever. For example, similar to the HES3D range, our LIN-X lateral hinge series now provides trackless opening for sub-5kg cabinet doors all the way up to full-length doors and panels weighing 90kg. That is all thanks to the development of the LIN-X1000. Like the J95 before it, the LIN-X1000 is a groundbreaking product in its class because it overcomes the load-bearing limitations of older generation lateral opening hinges. Now, thanks to the engineering breakthrough of the LIN-X1000, this fabulous safespacing option can be extended beyond kitchen and bathroom cabinets to walkin wardrobes, partitions and doors, all without the need to install a track. The LIN-X range operates a ‘push out’ mechanism, with doors moving outwards and horizontally to tuck neatly against an adjacent surface. Where this is not suitable, we offer the ‘push in’ lateral opening MFU range. Perfect for hidden doors and walk in closets. This series has also been extended since we were last at KBB, with the addition of the MFU-1200 suitable for doors weighing up to 70kg. Looking back, a lot has happened in the course of two years. However, despite all the disruption, we’ve kept firmly on course to delivering our main objectives - more choice, more quality, and more innovation in architectural components. It’s a pleasure to be able to get out there again and share how far we’ve come. If you missed us at KBB, never fear contact our sales team today at www. sugatsune.uk/contact-us/ and we will be delighted to talk you through our catalogue, give you a tour of our virtual showroom, or invite you to visit our offices in Winnersh, Reading where you can enjoy that first-hand experience yourself.

ROCKET DOOR FRAMES
THE RISE AND RISE OF POCKET DOORS Throughout the last 10 years the use of pocket doors in commercial and domestic developments has increased more than 10 fold and the reasons behind this impressive performance are very simple. The basic philosophy of pocket doors is MORE SPACE. If you consider an apartment of 100 sq. m. using pocket doors instead of hinged doors in effect you create almost 10% more usable space. All the space behind the door becomes practical, usable space. Chairs, tables, bookshelves etc. can all be placed in the space that was ‘behind the door’ and with costs per sq. m. increasing all the time this extra space is available at a relatively small cost. Pocket Doors are sliding doors and sliding doors have suffered from the bad reputation from many years ago when they were unreliable and jumped off the tracks easily. The development of a specific product for pocket doors made from steel not wood with enclosed runners that can’t jump off the rails and with all parts maintenance free have revolutionised the market. The steel structure means the system is strong and not subject to the risk of warping and therefore guaranteeing a great sliding action. Your design is not compromised when using Pocket Doors as the smart manufacturers offer their systems to fit UK standard door sizes so you can use your choice of door for the project and it works with the pocket door system too! Finally – PRICE! The cost of steel pocket door systems with the increase in use and therefore production quantities, has been reduced to very competitive levels. Prices that make them almost a ‘no brainer’ when designing new or refurbished areas.

REYNAERS ALUMINIUM
SPECIFYING SUCCESS WITH CURTAIN WALLING BRINGING VISIONS TO LIFE WITH GLAZED CURTAIN WALL SYSTEMS Facades have the ability to transform how we see architectural spaces and, in recent decades, glazed curtain walling systems have become increasingly popular, equipping architects with the freedom to create aesthetically-led facades which also meet specific performance requirements. Forming a significant part of the envelope, curtain wall systems can directly impact key performance considerations, including water tightness and thermal characteristics, daylighting, ventilation regimes, acoustics and building movement. With each different curtain wall type offering varying levels of performance, depending on characteristics like profile design, gaskets and openings, each system’s test data speaks for itself. CW 50, for example – the leading curtain wall system from Reynaers – offers all-round performance having passed CWCT Sequence B testing. Alongside technical performance, curtain walling holds the potential to define a building’s appearance. Besides technical performance, the aesthetic benefits are clear to see. Large and often full height windows maximise views and flood rooms with natural light, making spaces more comfortable, practical and modern – and connecting them with outside spaces. From the outside, curtain walling equips buildings with a distinctive appearance which defines their unique character. To achieve this, it is crucial for architects to specify systems which facilitate creative freedom, without compromising the performance benefits required.
ENSURING CORRECT SPECIFICATION To unlock the full suite of benefits which are made possible through curtain walling, it is crucial to work closely with suppliers and collaborate with design teams from the very outset of a project. Through the Reynaers Consult programme, in-house specialist consultants, engineers and technicians work closely with architects and building professionals to offer technical assistance. This close collaboration facilitates a deeper understanding of a project’s specific requirements and allows for the correct systems to be specified, including bespoke systems which are tailor-made to meet the specific demands of a project. By working together with partners throughout the supply chain, architects and building professionals can lean on wider expertise and bring their visions to life with glazed curtain wall systems, while weaving uncompromising performance and quality into the fabric of their buildings. HIGHWAY POLE BARN A REIMAGINED VERSION OF THE CLASSIC BUILDING TYPOGRAPHY Located along Highway #3 in Tecumseh, Ontario, a fresh take on the traditional pole barn sits surrounded by 64 acres of farmland. The owners’ passion for contemporary architecture led them to Dory Azar Architect Inc. (DAAi) for a reimagined version of the classic building typography, designed and built strategically and specifically for the site. The new structure serves as an extension of the owners’ neighbouring primary dwelling. In addition to the expected durable storage area for farm equipment and vehicles, DAAi also incorporated a warmer space for family gatherings, casual hangouts, and moments of solitude. The building is set back from the highway by approximately 320’ (98 m). It is oriented due south, and the shed roof is sloped to maximize the amount of roof surface area available for the installation of future solar panels. The building elevation contains a string of windows which gradually cascade toward the ground from west to east. The largest window groupings were implemented in the more public areas of the building, where ample light and views are desired. The higher, more discrete windows were implemented to offer more privacy to other areas of the space, without compromising on natural light.
ARCHETECH - PAGE 42
The structure is built using traditional wood-framed pole barn methods, and it is skinned with various metal sidings. The choice of the red siding color was an homage to traditional barn design and construction. The black metal roof cascades over the south elevation as if to cloak it in privacy from the busy highway. It provides a look of mystery and intrigue, while the opposite elevation rises and opens to face most of the site. The result is an unexpected splash of red standing proudly on an otherwise flat, neutral landscape.

YEOMAN SHIELD
SCHOOL USES TIME WISELY TO PROTECT INTERIORS WITH YEOMAN SHIELD Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School based in Kingstanding, just outside Birmingham, took advantage of a quieter time, with the majority of pupils home schooling, to undertake interior wall protection work with Yeoman Shield. Catering for 700 pupils aged 11- 16 the school has corridors and break-out areas throughout the school where walls and corners especially are exposed to marking and impact damage caused by the everyday movement of pupils, staff and equipment. The damage not only detracts from the smart image the school strives to up hold in all areas, but also becomes a strain on the maintenance budget with constant requirements of repair and redecoration. With the aim to reduce such damage and expenditure, after research and receiving samples, Head Teacher, Robert Swanwick, contacted Yeoman Shield to supply and carry out the installation of a complete wall protection system. Following strict Covid guidelines throughout the process, Yeoman Shield’s directly employed fixing operatives installed Yeoman Shield FalmouthEx Wall Protection Panels, (after boarding-out some of the brickwork to provide an even finish), at 1250 mm high to corridor and dining areas in a Dusty Grey colour to complement artwork decoration applied to the upper walls. Staircase walls were also fitted with the wall protection panels with the addition of Yeoman Shield 50 mm Dia. Guardian Handrail in Timber with attractive Stainless Steel accessories. Vulnerable wall corners were protected with 75 x 75 mm corner protection in a matching colour and Yeoman Shield 110 mm White PVCu cover over a solid timber core skirting was added.
This full Yeoman Shield wall protection system will abolish the future need for repainting walls and skirting with cleaning being the only maintenance required, reducing budgets spends. The rigid PVCu material that Yeoman Shield products are manufactured from are easy to clean, do not promote the growth of bacteria or mould and are not affected by the use of commercial cleaners, assisting in the up keep of high hygiene standards. Mr Swanwick commented “the quality of the product is exceptional. It has been installed for six months in some places and shows no signs of wear or tear yet. I also cannot speak highly enough of the professionalism of the installation teams, who understand the challenges of working in a school environment and get on with things quietly and efficiently. I am a very happy customer.” For more information on how installing wall & door protection products can help save on building maintenance and help keep interiors looking smart and clean get in contact on 0113 279 5854, info@yeomanshield.com or go to www.yeomanshield.com

DELTA MEMBRANES
FIRE RETARDANT, TYPE C WATERPROOFING MEMBRANES PAYING ATTENTION TO WATERPROOFING PRODUCTS WHICH OFFER PROTECTION IN EVENT OF FIRE IS NOT THE NORM. WE HARDLY THINK OF WATER MANAGEMENT AND FIRE IN THE SAME THOUGHT, HOWEVER THE BENEFITS OF DOING SO ARE NOT QUITE AS CRAZY AS IT SOUNDS In an age where prevention to fire is rightly under scrutiny in the construction industry, thoughts should be given to specifying materials which have properties which not only reduce the risk to occupants’ safety, but also have a lesser reaction time in the event of fire. With Delta MS 500 Fire Retardant membrane it is now possible to specify a Type C, cavity drainage membrane that offers not only protection from water or vapour ingress but also protection in the event of fire. When designing the most appropriate waterproofing system to any given situation, various design factors will need addressing such as (but not limited to), final use of the building, the grade of waterproofing requirement under the British Standard, structural considerations based on the form of construction, ground conditions, and in some cases, satisfying the requirements of building warranty providers. Important considerations should be given when designing a basement or below ground structure on how it will behave during the event of fire. Whilst a basement is not counted when assessing the numbers of storeys of a property for fire resistance and means of escape, it should be factored into design and be a key consideration. One of the challenges faced when designing a suitable waterproofing system has been compartmentalization of separate units in a single basement space. This can cause challenges from a waterproofing design perspective in maintaining continuity of the system. Using a fire-retardant membrane system enables the waterproofing designer to keep the waterproofing system continuous between adjoining basement properties whilst dealing with the issue of spread of flame from one property to another. Delta’s new fire-retardant Type C Cavity Drainage System with a fire classification of B-s2, d0, provides architectural freedom and allows systems to be used in not only deep basements but where Building Regulation Euroclass B or C are needed, meeting building requirements of today, but also that of tomorrow. Whatever the needs of your project, you can rely on Delta’s trusted Technical Team to ensure you get the right advice, support and practical help at exactly the right time. PELDON ROSE
REIMAGINING THE WORKPLACE PELDON ROSE SUPPORTS GRANT THORNTON TRANSFORMATION The world of professional services has fundamentally changed over the last few years, and global leader, Grant Thornton, needed office spaces which reflect this transformation that provide a true destination for its teams. To bring this vision to life, the business turned to office design and build company Peldon Rose to redesign two of its existing offices into creative hubs that support learning, culture and collaboration. The way that Grant Thornton operates has been evolving for a number of years, driven by key changes in its sector and wider factors, including the pandemic, that influence people’s decisions over where they work. It was vital that the company’s real-estate strategy was able to adapt to support this new way of working, which required a complete rethink of the value proposition of its offices. The spaces in Oxford and Reading needed true purpose and the ability to support agile working.
ARCHETECH - PAGE 54
“
PELDON ROSE
New graduates are a key part of Grant Thornton’s business, so understanding how to welcome them was a primary consideration. CREATING THE PERFECT STRATEGY Grant Thornton wanted to truly understand the wants and needs of its employees and so carried out extensive interviews with over four thousand employees. This then gave Peldon Rose vital insights to help shape the reimagined workplaces. Ultimately, the findings showed the new spaces needed to be a home for learning, culture and collaboration, embodying the values of the company. Grant Thornton envisaged a network of creative ‘drop-in centres’, rather than traditional office models, to build an environment where the office is a destination and place of connection. A key consideration was maximising the efficiency of the space, and by making every sq ft work harder through careful design, Peldon Rose was able to create truly versatile and flexible workspaces.
CREATING CONNECTIONS Grant Thornton’s previous offices lacked the room to unite teams and facilitate smart working – two major considerations for the redesigned locations. With this in mind, Peldon Rose focused on two human-centric spaces, which support a more collaborative, flexible and social workplace strategy. Advanced technology, open meeting spaces, and further designated areas where people can come together were integrated throughout, helping to foster a team-oriented environment and reignite that connection amongst teams, even if they are not physically present.
New graduates are a key part of Grant Thornton’s business, so understanding how to welcome them was a primary consideration. Peldon Rose focused on supporting a model of mentorship, where open, collaborative spaces are conducive to peer learning, spanning all levels of seniority and expertise. Jim Rogers, Grant Thornton Practice Leader for Thames Valley and Southampton, said: “The way we work has changed so much in recent years, and being able to have spaces that offer true flexibility is exciting and supports the evolution of our business.

it with a firm grasp on what Grant Thornton needed, two spaces that support this huge shift in the professional services industry while offering the flexibility needed. With the use of large, open communal spaces and the consistency across offices, featuring the same level facilities, employees have a clear choice between visiting either working location - knowing either way they’re guaranteed to have a productive day.”
Whilst encouraging collaboration was a necessity, it was also important that the spaces catered for a variety of working styles. For those times when employees need a quieter space to concentrate, or for team members who are studying for their accountancy exams, library areas have been created, which allow people to work in private away from the standard desk sections. This not only offers a more secluded area away from the main office, but it also allows the space to be used flexibly, offering versatility for events and seminars as the furniture is completely moveable.
CONSISTENCY ACROSS THE BUSINESS Cohesion was an important focus of the project, ensuring that both Oxford and Reading felt consistent, offering the same facilities and aesthetics, so employees can work from either location with ease. The colour scheme helps support this, with calming colours including soft pastels used across both sites, which helped to ensure consistency. With the environmental impacts of the design and build another key consideration, Peldon Rose upcycled existing furniture where possible, helping to reduce waste.

CERAMICHE REFIN
CERAMICHE REFIN WITH CORTINA THE SECRET OF WOOD BECOMES A TANGIBLE EMOTIONS Ceramiche Refin presents Cortina, a timeless collection inspired by wood recovered from alpine huts, and then reworked by the skilled hands of craftsmen. In the new decorative surfaces, the quality of stoneware and the typical tones of wood have given rise to an energetic and extremely well-balanced combination suited to any environment. The exclusivity of the interiors can also be nourished by the evocative warmth of wood, by its unpredictable veins that tell stories of craftsmanship, ancestral knowledge, and immortal traditions. The new Cortina collection, presented by Ceramiche Refin during the last edition of Cersaie, is the result of passionate research into the deepest fibres of wood, carried out through an indepth exploration of the natural beauty and ancient craftsmanship techniques that still survive in the most beautiful mountains of Northern Italy. The new line of decorative surfaces, with all its endless shades, transfers the traditional charm of mountain chalets to interior design environments, instilling a flicker of that distant warmth into every context. In the new collection, the strength of stoneware meets the incomparable charm of wood, intertwining in the peculiar veining of larch, pine, and fir wood.
ARCHETECH - PAGE 62
THE ANCIENT TASTE OF TRADITION Cortina is available in almond, honey, natural, and tobacco, an exceptional colour palette inspired by the natural power of wood recovered from traditional mountain huts. To create this new collection of wall tiles, Ceramiche Refin worked closely with the craftsmen of one of the most prestigious carpentries in the Belluno area, an important point of reference in the recovery of ancient wood for subsequent use in luxury contexts, acquiring precious information on woodworking techniques, and selecting the most particular staves to create the new floors. The distinctive feature of Cortina is its ability to combine - in its decorative surfaces - various essences inspired by different types of wood, creating an extremely original mix with great character. Cortina contains clear references to larch wood, with its ringshaped geometries that evoke a feeling of great resistance. There are references to fir and pine wood, traditionally used to cover the interiors of barns, with all the marks left by the passage of time. There are also references to fir and larch wood, inspired by the staves caressed by the sun, and marked by the weather.
“
CERAMICHE REFIN
Cortina contains clear references to larch wood, with its ring-shaped geometries that evoke a feeling of great resistance. By combining each of these woods in an unpredictable way, Cortina floors are able to enrich even the most luxurious contexts, evoking the authentic emotions contained in the heart of wood, and transforming them into tangible decorative elements. The staves that inspired the collection have been carefully chosen, one by one, from 121 examples of different woods recovered from alpine huts and barns built more than 50 years ago. The final result is a set of tiles that encompasses the many essences of wood, while also telling the story of the different stages of aging through exciting colour combinations and a variety of shades. It is precisely these shades that are one of the most remarkable features of Cortina: each slab is characterized by unique shades that carry forward the history of the original staves, burnished by the sun, and polished by the rain, during long exposures in the most fascinating mountain contexts. The refined balance of this collection, made even more evident by the intrinsic qualities of stoneware, is able to adapt to the most varied environments, even those subject to heavy wear and tear or foot traffic, bringing with it the delicate contrasts and the warm elegance of wood.
DECORATIONS Ceramiche Refin’s new proposal is also accompanied by special formats and decorations that complement the staves, available in all of the colours of the collection. Animated by unexpected geometries and weaves, the Esagono format is capable of bringing a modern and original aesthetic to any interior context. Herringbone breaks the cliché of the traditional slatted floor, proposing an eclectic and versatile decoration based on the combination of different woods, and capable of adapting to any type of covering. Chalet, available in different sizes, has a great expressive power, inspired by the warmth of typical mountain chalets, and characterized by great dynamism. With its material power, and also with the delicate play of colours triggered by its shades, Cortina generates unprecedented visual and tactile emotions, giving rise to a cathartic experience with an ancient flavour.

THE IMPACT OF GOOD ACOUSTICS Light, air, acoustics and spatial organisation are well recognised as essential elements when designers work on medical and healing facilities. This is because they have an impact on the treatment of body and mind. Now a wealth of information is available from Troldtekt, a leading developer and manufacturer of acoustic ceiling and wall solutions. This is available in an online series of articles which focuses on visions and practices opportunities and pitfalls within healing architecture. The building is structured around a courtyard and communal kitchen; it includes large spaces for group activities but also peaceful areas for quiet moments. “The great thing about Maggie’s is that it is designed for all. There is no formality – no reception, no need for an appointment – and it is not just for those suffering from cancer but also for friends and family members,” Ab Rogers says. “The design acts as a caregiver, for the space to nurture through its tactile nature, delivering support, care and connectivity above all else. The environment is constantly working to reassure, stimulate and welcome – offering natural light, views out to the garden, a range of room sizes and considered, crafted details such as hand-glazed terracotta lights and wooden door handles carved by an artist. The Zoo were looking to rehouse their existing group of Galapagos tortoises to a new state of the art, highly sustainable building. The original enclosure had been on site for a number of years, the Zoo were wanting to create an environment with the wow factor, using a building which mirrored the Zoo’s ethos of sustainability. Fordingbridge, with over 55 years’ experience, are industry leaders in the field of sustainable buildings, ensuring complete traceability of our supply chain and using our own in-house teams of structural designers, manufacturers, and logistics specialists ensures we achieve the client’s brief. We aim to design and construct inspiring spaces for humans and animals alike by doing the simple things correctly, minimising the energy demand of our buildings, minimising wastage, and ensuring high levels of air tightness and insulation. Fordingbridge were tasked with the concept drawings, structural calculations and producing working drawings, we then worked alongside the zoo’s appointed architect to obtain planning permission. We have worked previously with ZSL on projects, so our experience allowed us to work with maximum effectiveness. applications work together to help achieve, if not exceed, the brief. Following construction of the UK’s first Zero energy retail store for Costa with their Telford Unit, and a subsequent building in Swansea, we were delighted to be approached once again to deliver our third sustainable Eco- pod for the coffee giant. Our custom facility in West Sussex allows us to pre-fabricate all structural elements of our buildings including beams, columns and bracings. We were also able to preassemble a substantial number of parts in the factory, this process not only reduces disruption to the client, but also allowed us as a business to work more efficiently, as a solid day of preassembly at our factory saves the work of 3 days on site. It is our experience that makes this possible, and of course the time saved reduces the impact on our client and their customers alike. UNION WOOD CO
OUTDOOR GAMES TABLES FOR YEAR ROUND PLAY ENCOURAGING PLAY AND RELATIONSHIP BUILDING Designing outdoor furniture that encourages play and relationship building is what Union Wood Co set out to achieve when adding all-weather shuffleboard and ping pong tables to their successful table games collection. Owner and creative director of Union Wood Co, Craig Pearce, discovered an outdoor niche for his furniture studio to fulfill. They now have recreational tables available that will elevate everyone’s gameplay experience in open-air settings. Weather-resistant materials make both the ping pong and shuffleboard tables durable enough for yearround play.

OUTDOOR PLAY THROUGH DESIGN There is a growing trend in urban areas and workplace developments to create engaging outdoor spaces where people can escape the hustle and bustle of busy life. Union Wood Co’s contribution to this movement is their outdoor games tables. Providing people with inviting outdoor spaces that include fun games encourages social interaction. Laughter, paired with a touch of competitive spirit, naturally leads to team building and friendships. The inclusion of shuffleboard and ping pong tables in outdoor spaces can create a refreshing sense of community in any metropolitan environment.

Strategic use of outdoor finishes by Union Wood Co makes their games tables weatherresistant, without detracting from their cleanlined, modern appeal. The positive effect of outdoor play is not limited to people living and working in cities. The well-being of all homeowners and their families is enhanced by adding an outdoor games table to their patio, cabin, and more. Game tournaments will create memories that family members will cherish for years. Furthermore, the tables are constructed from defensive outdoor finishes that will withstand the rowdiest of family players.
IMPACT WITH DESIGN INTENT Union Wood Co has two base options for their outdoor shuffleboard and ping pong tables. Each design is intended to be subtle in appearance, yet impactful as thoughtful modern design. The base of The Break table model is supported by minimal angled frames. The form mimics supportive beams found in industrial areas and bridge construction. Designers at Union Wood Co simplified these heavy industrial lines to create a refined modern base.

PHAROS HITS THE JACKPOT AT THE HOLLAND CASINO UTRECHT NEW CASINO BLENDS SOPHISTICATION WITH WELCOMING HOSPITALITY The Dutch city of Utrecht is the fourth largest in the Netherlands and attracts a significant number of international and domestic visitors each year. One of the most recent additions to its range of entertainment destinations is the glittering new Holland Casino; a striking building adorned in gold.
of Holland Casino. The façade is structured with individual panels, and an LED fixture is built into each one. The fixtures are not directly visible, ensuring indirect light for viewers. The panels of the façade reflect the light for a seamless integration that delivers stunning results.
This glamourous new casino blends sophistication with welcoming hospitality, a perfect combination reflective of the Holland Casino brand, and something the company aspires to at every one of its venues.
As well as the golden façade being fully illuminated in the evenings, content can also be displayed on the panels. This ensures the casino can respond to special themes or days through the use of the media façade. The custom-made lighting system allows for a different colour to be introduced every 100mm, making it possible to create a dynamic display and even show detailed video content.
Designed by OZ Architects, the brief was to create a diamondshaped building, adorned in gold, that was also completely covered in light. As well as illuminating the entire building and using the façade to display content, it was also important that the building met the criteria for the BREAAM sustainability certification. Keeping light pollution to a minimum was crucial. System integrator Livingprojects worked closely with Lighting Designer Siegrid Siederius on behalf of Arup to deliver the vision

The dynamic lighting is controlled by a system from Pharos Architectural Controls. The façade is structured with individual panels, and an LED fixture is built into each one.
The addition of 32 Pharos EDN 20 (Ethernet Data Node) remote devices, each with 20 DMX outputs, provides a convenient and scalable solution that delivers cost-effective Ethernet-distributed DMX ports for large control projects. A Pharos TPC (Touch Panel Controller) is due to be added soon, offering users an advanced lighting playback engine through a sleek touch screen device. Bas Hoksbergen from Pharos said: “It was a privilege to be involved in the newest Holland Casino project. As a visionary brand, their locations always break the mould, and the end results are always stunning. “Livingprojects and their partners deliver above and beyond every time, and Pharos relishes every opportunity to work alongside them.” Coupled with the luxurious façade, the casino’s entrance adds to the excitement and awe-inspiring experience. Livingprojects worked with Rovasta to develop a 40m long light that shows dynamic content and wows visitors from the moment they step inside. With more than 9000 fixtures, suitable locations for the cabling, connections, and the Pharos control system itself had to be carefully identified to ensure both safety and style were achieved. As such the EDN 20s are placed in stainless steel outdoor cabinets, together with all the power supplies and fibre optic network components. The VLC and TPC are placed inside the central networking area of the Casino.
The new casino in Utrecht adds to the growing portfolio of the Holland Casino locations and follows hot on the heels of the recently opened venue in the municipality of Venlo. LUMENA LIGHTS
THE RIGHT TIME TO SPECIFY SOLAR Outdoor lighting implemented professionally brings buildings to life, and can totally transform an architectural space, highlighting features, trees or walkways, marking out certain areas with a wide scope of lighting effects. Innovation with the design of amenity lighting for safety and security means light fittings now meet the high level of criteria that clients expect. Factors considered usually include cost, installation method and running costs. With the highest ever energy prices on our doorstep, and the essential push towards efficient green energy, what better time to specify professional solar lighting? The many benefits of solar lights include : • Low installation cost • Zero electricity cost • Reliable, with life expectancy of 10 years or more • Next to no light pollution
Lumena have the UK’s largest range of professional solar lighting, with high stock levels throughout. The often cloudy weather in the UK means that solar lights have to be specifically designed to cope effectively with low light conditions. Virtually all of Lumena’s range have electronic controls that limit the light output over time, to effectively ration the charge over the dark hours, in most cases lasting all night, even in winter months. All lights have large capacity lithium-ion batteries and the latest high tech panels.
• Ideal for security
Solar lights fall into a number of categories as follows : • Path Lighting - Ideal to mark out boundaries of drives, entrance ways and garden areas. • Security Lighting - Lights with built in motion sensors emit a bright light when triggered, changing to a default lower light after activation which results in lasting many hours even in bad weather conditions. • Flood Lights - Ideal for parking areas and areas requiring more light. • Street Lighting - Designed for lighting private local roads,
It is often thought that Solar lights incorporate a photocell to activate at dusk and turn off at dawn. In fact, most have a control circuit that activates the lights as soon as there is no power from the solar panel, and reverts to an off position once the panel starts to charge and voltage is detected. Remote controls are supplied with many of Lumena’s solar lights giving control of functions and brightness levels. Lumena reviews quote the high level of customer service received, giving customers confidence when specifying their fittings. A five year supplier guarantee is offered with most products.

NORDIC COPPER BUILDING STUDIES Nordic Copper offers an extensive range of natural surfaces and alloys that can be applied in numerous ways to clad a wide variety of building types from concert halls to social housing. A growing series of building studies – via www.nordiccopper.com – exemplify the best in contemporary architecture and showcase the diversity of surfaces, forms and applications available with Nordic Copper today. Copper’s unique architectural qualities are defined by its naturally developing patina – which cannot be replicated successfully using other materials with surface coatings. Within a few days of exposure to the atmosphere, a copper surface begins to oxidise, changing from the ‘bright’ mill finish to a chestnut brown, which gradually darkens over several years to a chocolate brown. Continued weathering can eventually result in the distinctive green or blue patina seen on older roofs.
NATURAL PROCESSES The Aurubis ‘Nordic Copper’ range provides all these surfaces straightaway. The processes involved are generally similar to those taking place over time in the environment, utilising copper mineral compounds, not alien chemical processes. All these surfaces form an integral part of the copper, generally continuing to change over time, and are not lifeless coatings or paint. The material is easily bent and formed, and there are no limitations on the length of copper sheet or strip because whole coils are treated on the production line, not just limited size sheets. The Nordic Copper range includes Nordic Standard ‘mill finish’ and Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper, offering lighter or darker shades of brown determined by the thickness of the

oxide layer. The extensive Nordic Blue, Nordic Green and new Nordic Turquoise ranges have been developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. As well as the solid patina colours, ‘Living’ surfaces are available for each with other intensities of patina flecks revealing some of the dark oxidised background material.
COPPER ALLOYS Copper alloys are growing in popularity as well including Nordic Bronze and Nordic Brass – which can also be supplied preweathered. The innovative Nordic Royal is an alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc, giving it a rich golden through-colour and making it very stable. Its surface retains its golden colour and simply loses some of its sheen over time to give a matt finish.
DIVERSITY OF FORMS A wide choice of Nordic Decor mechanically applied surface treatments is also available for various surfaces and alloys, particularly suited to interior applications. Apart from traditionally-jointed, rolled material supported by a substrate, various other forms of copper for architecture are increasingly being explored by designers.

With an ‘A1 (non-combustible material)’ fire classification … copper is suitable for cladding tall buildings using appropriate constructions. For example, copper can be supplied in profiled sheets or extremely flat honeycomb panels, pressed to provide surface textures and modulation, or perforated, expanded or woven as mesh for transparency. But there is more to architectural copper than meets the eye, with an unrivalled lifespan, no maintenance and full recyclability. With an ‘A1 (non-combustible material)’ fire classification to EN 13501-1, copper is also suitable for cladding tall buildings, using appropriate constructions. Low thermal movement makes it appropriate for any climates and locations, and it is non-toxic and safe to handle, as well as non-brittle and safe to work. And, importantly today, its inherent antimicrobial qualities make it ideal for touch surfaces internally as well.
LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE The lifespan of copper roofing and cladding can be regarded conservatively as 200 years, subject to substrate and structure, and this is endorsed by experience. Naturally, this longevity has a significant beneficial effect upon comparative whole of life cost assessments. Copper’s longevity is due to a complex patination process. It ensures extreme durability with no maintenance and resistance to corrosion in virtually any atmospheric conditions. And, unlike some other architectural metals, copper does not suffer from underside corrosion.
Photo: Chris Hodson In addition, copper requires no maintenance or decoration. As a lightweight and flexible covering, structural support demands are reduced, resulting in lower carbon and ‘whole of life’ costs. Copper is also fully recyclable utilising long-established practices – 97% of copper in construction comes from recycling – and has other impressive sustainability and environmental credentials. And, of course, copper retains a high scrap value at eventual demolition. CULTURE SHIFT UK CONSTRUCTION WEEK LONDON TO FOCUS ON CULTURE CHANGE IN CONSTRUCTION The fundamental issue of culture change in the construction industry is the focus of a major event in May this year, with more than 25,000 people expected to come together to explore how the industry implements new behaviours, best practice and a true cultural shift in how it builds for the future. UK Construction Week (UKCW), the country’s largest live show for the construction industry and all its related professions and trades, is running in London at the ExCeL centre on 3-5 May. Nathan Garnett, UKCW event director, says: “We’re really excited to bring UK Construction Week to London. 2022 is the year to focus on how we achieve the systemic changes we’ve been discussing for some time and to share the learning from the organisations who have already made a strong start. We need to ensure there’s not a corner of construction that doesn’t know how to live its core values, implement new policies and behaviours, and be transformed by culture change. “As always with this event, there’s also so much to see, with many displays, exhibitors, shows and products you won’t find anywhere else. It will be a chance to celebrate the sector’s achievements and some of the best thought leaders and innovators construction has to offer. This is must-attend event for anyone that wants to have their finger on the pulse of all things construction.”
ARCHETECH - PAGE 84
Day one will include updates on the new rules around public procurement, the new regulatory regime on building safety, the forthcoming Building Safety Act, and the completely new ways in which the industry works on projects as wide ranging as prisons, hospitals, road and rail infrastructure, education buildings and housing. Day two will be a deep dive into digitalisation, Net Zero and energy futures, and day three will focus on people, including diversity, health and wellbeing, recruitment and retention issues. UKCW London will consist of over 40,000 sq m of exhibition space, more than 300 exhibitors (600 including co-located shows), 10,000 products, 300 expert speakers, seven theatre stages, multiple specialist hubs, and 150 hours of CPD content and activities. systems - JACKODUR® Atlas and THERMOMUR® Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF) – will be on display on the company’s stand at UK Construction Week. These products exceed the u-value targets of the new Part L building regs which are coming into effect in June this year. JACKON’s THERMOMUR® 350 Super block is the most energy efficient building system currently available. It has a U-value of 0.15 straight out of the box, ahead of the required maximum of 0.16 U-value on external walls - part of the requirement that new homes emit 31% less CO2 under the new Part L. JACKON brings its 60 years’ expertise in EPS (moulded expanded polystyrene) and XPS (extruded polystyrene) manufacturing to the market. JACKODUR® ATLAS uses XPS (extruded polystyrene) to create an insulated floor slab, while THERMOMUR® ICF uses EPS (moulded expanded polystyrene) to create the formwork. ICF is a modern construction method, which is rapidly growing in popularity in the UK. It integrates insulation materials into the concrete formwork, totally revolutionising the way a house is constructed. www.jackon.co.uk

VASTERN TIMBER
TIME TO CONSIDER BRITISHGROWN TIMBER THIS YEAR TIMBER HAS BEEN HARD TO OBTAIN, BUT THE ANSWER IS CLOSE BY, SAYS TOM BARNES Timber products, including roof battens, structural timber and timber cladding, are in high demand this year, and it is well known

of the timber used in the UK is imported, and these supply chains have been impacted by Brexit, covid and a changing climate. In the years to come, an increased focus on the carbon footprint of construction will surely lead architects to specify more sustainable materials, leading to yet more demand for wood. For all these reasons, finding external cladding timber can be challenging at present. Favourites like Canadian cedar and Siberian larch are in very short supply, while prices for these products have risen by 50–100% so far this year. But the good news is that many locally grown timber species are well suited to external cladding, and these are often cheaper, and more readily available, than imported alternatives.
BRITISH-GROWN TIMBER CLADDING There are many timber species grown in the UK that are suited to exterior applications. Native western red cedar, larch, oak and sweet chestnut make excellent cladding due to their natural durability. Modern modification processes, such as thermal modification can be used to transform locally grown ash, poplar and sycamore - which wouldn’t normally be suitable for cladding into a durable cladding that we call Brimstone. This is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to imported hardwoods. It’s gratifying that many customers are choosing our locally-grown, thermally-modified timber for its environmental credentials. Thermal modification is a non-toxic process that heats timber in controlled conditions, producing a stable, durable material that resists rot. Modified timbers have their own characteristics, for example our product Brimstone, which is made of thermally-
and durable, but it can be a little brittle so requires more care
stable and durable cladding material. Since 2016 we have used this process to transform our locally grown hardwoods into an innovative product called Brimstone®. Beautiful and long-lasting, Brimstone is perfect for external cladding, but best of all, it’s grown here in our own woodlands. The range includes Brimstone ash, Brimstone poplar and Brimstone sycamore.
BIOBASED MATERIALS Minimising the use of carbon-intensive materials such as concrete and steel and using bio-based materials like timber could be key to a low-carbon economy. With these pressures affecting the whole planet, we in the UK cannot rely on importing 80% of the timber we use. I believe that we must aim to be more self-sufficient, which means planting more trees and using more locally grown wood. Let’s use these timber shortages as an opportunity to start making the switch.
CASE STUDY Much Wenlock, Shropshire Recently named one of ‘Britain’s Greenest Streets,’ this development for a local housing association comprises twelve homes of various sizes, all clad in Brimstone poplar, the thermally modified, British grown timber cladding. Timber homes in Shropshire are nothing new, but this exemplary development of energy efficient, affordable homes uses locally sourced, natural materials combined with passivhaus principles and modern processes to excellent effect. The housing association commissioned leading Passivhaus and sustainable architects, Archetype, for the project. UK sourced natural materials were used, including locally quarried clay roof tiles, local lime render and locally grown cladding. Treehugger called the project ‘radical simplicity’ but we call it common sense. Find out more about our range of locally sourced timber products at Vastern.co.uk *Tom Barnes is MD of Vastern Timber, which produces timber cladding, flooring, structural timbers and sawn hardwoods from timber grown in Britain.

Kebony’s revolutionary technology is an environmentally friendly process which modifies sustainably sourced softwoods with heat, enabling them to permanently take on the attributes of tropical hardwood, including high durability, hardness, and dimensional stability. This unique process also provides Kebony with its characteristic appearance. Nina Landbø, International Sales Manager added: “We are delighted that Kebony was chosen for the exterior cladding and decking of this flagship cruise terminal in Estonia, and hope it can be used to inspire the development of many more sustainable projects for the cruise-ship industry worldwide.” Following the COP26 climate summit which saw 100 world leaders promise to end and reverse deforestation by 2030, Salto Architects’ decision to make extensive use of sustainablysourced Kebony wood for the cruise terminal reflects the global shift to favour sustainable materials in construction, which will soon become an imperative for architects, homebuilders and real estate developers to rapidly curb the impacts of climate change, including the destruction of trees which depletes forests that absorb vast amounts of CO2. www.kebony.com

STRAIGHT REVEAL? CHECKED REVEAL? TURN THE CAVICLOSER
WEST FRASER LAUNCHES A NEW ARCHITECTS’ PAGE
The Type V Cavicloser from Cavity Trays of Yeovil consists of a moulded profile casing within which is a thermal insulation core. Supplied with its own securing ties, the closer is delivered with its faceplate flat, ready for immediate building into a straight reveal. However, the flat faceplate also incorporates a hinged section, permitting that part of it to be turned 90 degrees. By so doing, it is transformed into a Cavicloser suitable for a checked reveal. The turned section ends up lying against the inner (cavity) face of the outside skin.
For the past six years, West Fraser (formerly Norbord), has partnered with RIBA Journal to hold an annual competition that challenges architects to use the industry’s most popular OSB brand, SterlingOSB Zero. With a different brief each year, the competition has been hotly contested by some of the industry’s most creative architectural practices, all vying to win the top prize of £2,500.
In this position, it acts as a separation barrier between wet outside skin and window frame. Manufactured using recycled material. Type V Cavicloser – Versatile - Supporting Part L requirements.

7 INDOOR AIR QUALITY
8 WICKLOW HOSPICE IN IRELAND, POWERED BY PANASONIC HEAT
Indoor air quality is of prime importance. Virus transmission occurs more readily inside than out. Inadequate ventilation and insufficient fresh air allow pathogen build up, increasing the risk of infection. Regular ventilation in enclosed areas can reduce infection by over 70%. Vectaire products bring fresh air into the home and remove impurities. Condensation and pollution (and pathogen) levels can be controlled continuously, economically and at really low noise levels, whilst ensuring minimal heat loss. The Midi, Maxi and Maxi Plus MVHRs with integral acoustic attenuation do that. Installation is simple. These “BY-AT” models incorporate summer bypass and frost protection with a variable choice of trickle, boost and purge speeds. They are SAP PCDB listed and are the solution to better ventilation and reduced noise in residential properties.
Panasonic Air-to-Water Aquarea Heat Pumps are providing energy efficient heating and hot water to the Wicklow Hospice in Ireland. Consultants, J V Tierney & Co and main mechanical contractors Quinn Downes Ltd, created a design for a low carbon heating system to service the facilities of this new hospice. The solution, featuring a Panasonic Aquarea H Series T-Cap system delivers a low environmental impact, requires minimal maintenance, and is highly energy efficient and yet cost-effective. Base Engineering Ltd specified and installed six Aquarea H Series T-Cap 16kW units along with a Panasonic Cascade Controller to provide underfloor heating to 2022m2 of floor space to the new building.

STATE-OF-THE-ART ARCHITECTURE SOLLERTIA’S TEXTILE ARCHITECTURE EMBRACES THE SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ART AND SCIENCE Sollertia, a firm specializing in textile architecture and the design, fabrication, and construction of lightweight tensile structures, is proud to extend its innovative services and expertise to Canadian architects across the country. Backed by an experienced team of professionals who specialize in high performance technical textile structures, Sollertia’s comprehensive service offering focuses on the creation of bold, durable, and innovative solutions that are advancing the stateof-the-art in architecture. “Textile architecture is an underutilized architectural innovation in Canada, and it still isn’t taught in schools despite being an important contribution to the construction process,” notes Claude Le Bel, Founder and President of Sollertia. “Architectural textile membranes are high-performance construction materials, comparable to traditional materials, yet with a totally different design language.”

SOLLERTIA
Textile architecture is an underutilized architectural innovation in Canada, and it still isn’t taught in schools despite being an important contribution to the construction process.
TEXTILE ARCHITECTURE 101 Tensile architecture is ideal for multiple applications, both internal and external, from acoustic and lighting solutions, to ceilings, walls, protective roofing, and more. The goal with all of these various types of projects is to create as light a product as possible. The membranes play a structural role and can be used to cover huge surfaces without the necessity of a multitude of different types of supportive materials. The lightness of a membrane, combined with its transparent nature, creates an innovative avenue for environmentally sensitive projects. For example, architectural membrane meshes can be engineered to form translucent façades, enabling infusions of light and controlling solar gains. Lightweight, yet durable, highperformance membranes provide exceptional strength and flexibility and are designed to withstand the toughest elements of the Canadian climate. Founded in 2000, Sollertia opened its own state-of-the-art confectioning workshop in 2017. The facility is conducive to both developing innovative ideas, and to ensuring consistent quality control over the entire production process of its prefabricated membrane designs. Membranes used in textile architecture typically fall into five categories, including polyester woven with PVC coating (polyvinyl chloride), glass fiber woven with PTFE coating (polytetrafluoroethylene), ETFE film (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene), silicone coated fiberglass woven, and PTFE expanded woven with PTFE coating (Tenara). “Technical textile membranes can be engineered for permanent, temporary, or even nomadic structures,” explains Nathalie Lortie, Director, Design and Innovation at Sollertia. “They are customizable to provide coverage over expansive surface areas, in a variety of geometric forms, and that unlocks the door to unprecedented freedom of architectural expression.”
BIODOME – RAISING THE BAR TO NEW HEIGHTS No project more thoroughly incorporates the complexity of Sollertia’s specialized expertise than the firm’s commission as part of a major renovation of Montreal’s Biodome, a science museum immersing visitors in a diversity of delicate ecosystems. While the demands of the project pushed the firm to its limits, Sollertia rose to meet every challenge head on, and to expand the boundaries of their discipline. The project’s scale of complexity drew on multiple areas of expertise, and Sollertia embarked on a journey to design and install membranes to form the facility’s transit corridors and transition spaces between the various ecosystems. Drawing upon past experiences working on projects facilities in the Biodome’s surrounding Olympic complex, the Sollertia team developed a series of different prototypes before working closely with
KANVA, lead architects of the project, to select the perfect balance of materiality, flexibility, and durability for the project. “The success of a lightweight fabric structure project such as this one requires a symbiotic relationship between architecture and engineering in order to obtain the desired aesthetics, stability, durability, and lightness as a whole,” explains Ms. Lortie. “This synergy must not only exist at the level of our very own multidisciplinary team, but also with all of the professionals and the various trades working alongside us.” The use of tensile structure techniques provided many advantages for designing large, undulated walls. Given the complexity of the building, the lightness and greater flexibility of this type of structure made it possible to produce a biophilic architectural gesture, a skin, which presents a multitude of shapes and geometries that envelope the different ecosystems,

SOLLERTIA while adapting and integrating in a sensitive way with the original building’s exceptionally complicated structural engineering and mechanical elements. The architectural membrane used in the project is non-stretchable, thus great precision in the design of all the structural elements and the membrane was of utmost importance to avoid any kinks. The tensile membrane shapes were developed to ensure that the tensile fabric surfaces never conflict with existing or projected

The Biodome is a good example of a project where architectural membranes were used for all of their wonderful inherent properties. The flexibility of the membrane allowed it to fully espouse the architectural concept, and its lightweight structural properties allowed a reduction in the quantity of materials used. That combination makes it a sensible choice for the environment. “The tensile fabric walls of the Biodome are a great example of the type of project we’re passionate about, and involving ourselves with projects that are carriers of messages that awaken human consciousness and promote environmental awareness and well-being is our priority,” adds Ms. Lortie. “Since this type
