ÎLOT BALMORAL ENERGIZING MONTREAL’S CREATIVE ECONOMY AS A NEW ADDITION TO DOWNTOWN SKYLINE The Îlot Balmoral, a 13-storey mixed-use office building commissioned by the Société d’Habitation de Montréal (SHDM), rises as a testimony to Montréal’s creative economy. One of the final major developmental pieces of the ‘Quartier des Spectacles’ in downtown Montréal, the impressive structure sits adjacent to Place des Festivals, and is the new home of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) and UQAC’s École des arts numériques, de l’animation et du design (NAD School). “We proposed four visions of what an office building specifically designed for a cultural economy could look like, and Îlot Balmoral was selected to echo the very vibrant, dynamic nature of the district,” explains architect Claude Provencher, founding partner at Provencher_Roy. “The Quartier des Spectacles is a cultural centre of activity that is now almost complete in its revitalization and transformation of the urban fabric surrounding Place des Arts.”

Several other cultural organizations have since signed leases, and Îlot Balmoral is becoming the creative hub that we envisioned.
PROVENCHER ROY the skyline, a bright red external fold contrasts against the clean glass exterior. The colour was chosen as an echo of the cultural branding materials of the Quartier des Spectacles, and serves to distinguish Îlot Balmoral from the functions of more traditional office towers in the district.
ANCHORING THE CREATIVE ECONOMY AN ARCHITECTURAL SYMBOL OF CREATIVITY On the surface, Îlot Balmoral is a highly dynamic structure rising up from the urban fabric. The almost perfect cube is very clean and slick, and is wrapped in exterior glass that was carefully selected for its white frit pattern and translucent panels.
As a nod to Îlot Balmoral’s importance to Montreal’s creative scene, the National Film Board of Canada signed on as the building’s core tenant. Celebrating 50 years of film excellence, the Canadian institution was looking to modernize and transform their facilities, and the move included the reinstallation of the iconic NFB logo in the new lobby, which is a symbol of Canadian design history

A BEACON OF VIBRANCY Provencher_Roy’s inclusive design strategy embraces the vibrancy of the district by drawing in pedestrian flow across the diagonal cut of the building’s sunlit lobby. The atrium establishes the lobby’s unique identity, ascending skyward to the building’s glass ceiling amidst a bright material palette of white and light gray walls, and exposed concrete floors. The palette was chosen to reflect and enhance the energy and dynamism of the lobby, anointed with additional features including exposed columns and a signature brass deck. Above the lobby level, the open atrium is framed by brightly lit offices. Pedestrian bridges on every level connect the building’s two volumes, crossing the atrium and providing spectacular views of the surrounding cityscape, with a backdrop of Montreal’s landmark Mont Royal. The northeastern volume floats one storey higher than the southwestern volume, and the latter hosts a rooftop greenspace with breathtaking city views that is designed for outdoor events. “It was a particularly interesting experience, driven by our client’s eagerness to achieve something spectacular,” summarizes Claude Provencher. “Beyond the functionality of the individual spaces of the built environment, we believe that Îlot Balmoral captures and incorporates the vibrancy of the district.” www.provencherroy.ca/en/

SCHÖCK
NEW FROM SCHÖCK A THERMALLY INSULATING CONCRETE WALL CONNECTION Around 40% of all thermal bridges in a building are caused by walls and supports, resulting in some 10% of heating energy losses. With reinforced concrete construction, minimising linear thermal bridges in these areas has undoubtedly been a perennial problem. However, Schöck, the market leaders in the development of structural thermal breaks for balconies and other cantilever constructions, has now applied its Isokorb expertise to reinforced concrete wall and support – resulting in a dedicated new solution – the Sconnex type W. It offers outstanding insulation performance, combined with an exceptional load-bearing capacity and the first major project to incorporate the new product is the Aylesbury Estate regeneration in South London.
EXTENSIVE REGENERATION REQUIRED The estate, originally completed in 1977, was planned to house over 10,000 residents. By the 1990s, it was one of the most deprived areas in the country and although there have been remedial developments since, the regeneration has now escalated. Today Aylesbury Estate is one of the most significant

urban renewal projects in London. Due for completion in 2036 the overall masterplan envisages 3500 spacious new homes, with Aylesbury Square the civic heart of the regeneration. This public square consists of two separate blocks, from four to fifteen storeys. The North Building provides 122 new homes, community facility and a public library; and the South Building a community health care facility and an Early Years centre. The construction of the two blocks is of reinforced concrete. So the wall connection to the floor, or floor slab, can be a serious source of linear thermal bridges, resulting in serious energy loss, a high risk of condensation and the formation of mould growth. This is likely to cause possible structural damage and even become a health risk to occupants. There is a sustainability strategy in place for Aylesbury Square, to ‘create a place which meets or exceeds the highest quality standards for new development in London.’ This to be achieved by delivering highly energy efficient buildings as part of a London Plan policy compliant strategy. The new Sconnex type W thermally insulating connection for reinforced concrete walls is unique in its ability to help meet those criteria.
SCONNEX IS A UNIQUE SOLUTION The new Schöck product minimises the thermal bridge between the exterior wall insulation and the insulation above the floor slab, increasing the energy efficiency of the entire building. Heating
which transmits very high pressure, tensile and shear forces in the longitudinal and transverse direction. Made possible by the use of a pressure buffer consisting of ultra-high performance fibre reinforced concrete, which achieves compressive strength in excess of 175 N/mm2 – but with extremely good flexural strength as well. There is also a significant cost reduction involved when compared to installing insulation beneath the floor slab.
costs are lower, a pleasant room climate is created and the linear thermal transmittance (Psi) of the connected reinforced concrete wall is reduced by up to 90 percent. This outstanding insulation performance is combined with an excellent load-bearing capacity,

UPMARKET OXFORDSHIRE DEVELOPMENT HIGHLIGHTS JACKON ICF BENEFITS A prestigious new development in the West Oxfordshire village of Kingham has used JACKON’s THERMOMUR® 350 Super block to provide the most energy efficient building system currently available. This product enables a U-value of 0.15 straight out of the box. This means it fully complies with the changes to Part L building regs coming into effect in June this year. These will stipulate a maximum of 0.16 U-value on external walls, as part of a requirement that new homes emit 31% less CO2 than is required by the current Part L. Kingham Barns comprise five buildings, one of which is a gym. The developer is the HENGE Group and the contractor is Agilitee. Two of the houses and the gym are new builds and have been constructed using the JACKON products. The other two houses are refurbishments of existing Cotswold stone structures. Chaminda Narayan, the Managing Director of Agilitee has now used THERMOMUR® on a number of projects and is very enthusiastic

about its benefits. “There simply is no other block that compares to THERMOMUR® on strength, U-values or price. This is now our preferred building system. It meets the toughest new regulations on insulation, it is straightforward to use, with minimal wastage and it can be clad using almost unlimited different methods, which is important in a heritage type of project such as this.” www.jackon.co.uk

it’s a family on holiday who leave us understanding more about reducing food waste or the finance team of a multi-national who visit to see how we build our carbon balance sheet. Both learn from their time here and will leave with a better understanding.” concludes Graham.
Outside, sustainable technologies will not only form part of the operational aspects of the Eco-Parc, but also their application and use will be demonstrated. “The idea is to show why we’ve selected certain solutions, how they work and the impact they have. So, by using examples of equipment and processes that are actually operating on the site, we will explain how production, use, repurposing and recycling can be achieved in a circular fashion. It’s important to me that the project is approached in a very practical and realistic way.”
Initial interest in the project has already been encouraging. The regional development council has agreed to back it with funding and several of IMS Consulting’s own clients, both in France and the UK, are talking about actively supporting its development and operation. Phase one, which will include accommodation for onsite staff, the permaculture site and café complex is expected to be complete by summer 2023. Follow the project’s progress at: www.eco-parc.eu

CUSTOMISED LOFT LADDERS Why settle for ‘standard’ when you can have a custom loft ladder? The Supreme and Elite product range from Premier Loft Ladders can be given a powder coat finish to any RAL colour of your choice. With a powder coat finish it is possible to turn an ordinary loft ladder or flat roof access ladder into something unique. Perhaps it could become a bold statement piece, in a bright, bold colour such as Saffron Yellow (RAL 1017). Alternatively, you may prefer a colour that blends with the decor of the building. For example, you may wish to match the colour of the loft ladder to other features in the property, such as window frames, doors or even electrical power sockets. Alternatively, you could match the colour with wall paint. Powder coating offers a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. In addition, powder coating produces an even finish on all surfaces. The result is a high-quality appearance, that is hard and durable; making it ideal for use on frequently used loft ladders.

When the sun rises on Wednesday, 15th June, 2022 it will find itself a few degrees less omnipotent than the day before, at least in England, thanks to Part O of Schedule 1 to the Building Regulations 2010, which comes into effect that day. The new legislation will make it a legal requirement to mitigate overheating in residential buildings and will apply to all new building construction work. In real terms, this means architects and building professionals will need to integrate solutions to limit unwanted solar gain at the design stage of a new build project. Part O defines the acceptable means to achieve this as glazing considerations, building design, building location and external fixed shading devices, including shutters, external blinds, overhangs, and awnings and this is where Enviroblinds can help. Enviroblinds offers an unrivalled choice of solutions to comply with Part O, including external roller blind screens and aluminium shutters, external venetians, awnings, brise soleil and panels, all of which offer external shading and substantially reduce overheating. When planned as part of a new building design, Enviroblinds’ external roller screens, venetians and roller shutters can be flush mounted with the casing and side guides neatly concealed, complementing the building façade. All products can be specified either with a motor that can be fully integrated into an automated building system or a manual operating device.

What is more, all of our external blinds and roller shutters are engineered to last, requiring only a minimum of maintenance, which bodes well for a net zero carbon future. enviroblinds.co.uk

GEZA ARCHITETTURA
PROGETTO ITALIA FURLA HEADQUARTERS Furla Headquarters “Progetto Italia”: an industrial architecture and office project integrated into nature, where working environment, sustainability and landscape are harmoniously conceived. The new Furla Headquarters are located in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, in the province of Florence, immersed in the Chianti area. The project highlights a paramount theme: the integration of the industrial architecture into the Italian landscape, providing an opportunity to rethink the quality of the workspace. Architecture and nature are perfectly blended along all directions to create a unique element where the design and the Chianti landscape (defined by hills, heritage, and agricultural areas) communicate harmoniously. The Furla factory covers 42,000 sq m of soil - 18,300 sq m built - and has three main volumes (one for offices, two for labs and logistics) designed to be harmoniously integrated into the surrounding landscape, without too much contrast. Architecture and nature coexist in a functional balance.

GEZA ARCHITETTURA Nature is a prominent element, not just because of its beauty (Chianti hills), but also because it creates a pleasant environment once blended into the building: patios, green coverings, and natural light contribute to a more sustainable working habitat, where people can also relax and enjoy contact with nature. Finally, sustainability plays a key role in this project, which has been designed to comply with green energy best practices.

THINK DESIGN
Over the years, hardly any other material has proven its worth in interior design to the extent in which the laminate has done. Looks, feel and function are combined to get the interplay of elements into all-embracing spatial concepts in a way that couldnt be more natural
THINK HOMAPAL
Above all, it has always been the genuinemetal coated laminates and magnetic boards that are associated with the HOMAPAL name. Yet behind the scenes in Herzberg, many more variations of this modern material are created and produced. It provides architects, carpenters and joiners in furniture-making and interior designs with the basis for producing the last word in creative design - in doctors' surgeries, bars, hotels, clubs and restaurants, on cruise ships and in shop fitting.

Diversity Matters “Employers recognise the benefits of effective diversity and inclusion policies”
At Work
Confederation of British Industry
There is a moral and, increasingly, legal obligation to recognise social and religious diversity in the facilities provided in the workplace. Many large employers see practical and commercial benefits in improving the ways they cater for the well-being of their staff and visitors. Improved morale and loyalty, lower staff turnover and reduced absenteeism can all be very tangible results of enlightened staff relations. Corporations and public service organisations are beginning to cater for the spiritual needs of their workforce and customers by creating a multi-faith room or prayer room as well as providing facilities for their physical well-being. Probably the most widely performed act of ritual cleansing is wudu, performed by Muslims before prayer. As a new client told us “Washing yourself before prayer in a little sink isn’t the most enjoyable experience.”
Is this your washroom?
At School Schools and universities are leaders in encouraging multicultural tolerance. Providing a multi-faith room helps to develop interaction and mutual understanding. After a recent WuduMate installation for pre-prayer ablution at a Birmingham school, a teacher informed us “They are being used regularly by the students when they are in the Prayer Room. They are really pleased with them and that we thought of them being able to carry out their rituals when praying.”

PHOENIX BRICKWORK
ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL PHOENIX BRICKWORK LAYS ONE MILLIONTH BRICK AT 1,400 NEW STUDENT FLATS IN LINCOLN A Derbyshire-based brickwork, scaffolding and drywall business has laid its one millionth brick (representing over 200km of bricklaying) at Lincoln’s prestigious new student village, St Marks. Phoenix Brickwork was awarded a £4m masonry package in 2020 to deliver almost 1,400 student flats as part of a £75 million scheme. Ten separate student accommodation buildings make up the project, which has been constructed on behalf of the University of Lincoln.
“We have really enjoyed working alongside fellow construction giants to bring this development to life.” Early work included the partial demolition of St Mark’s Retail Park, off Tritton Road, to create space for the new development. The University of Lincoln said it needs the extra accommodation to meet anticipated future demand from existing and new students.
Christian Watson, Group Chairman of Phoenix Brickwork, which has its headquarters in Pinxton, said it had been a pleasure to work at the Lincoln site and said laying the one millionth brick marked a significant milestone.
As well as the ten student accommodation buildings, the scheme will also deliver new retail and leisure, housing, a hotel, and improved parking. Once completed, the new properties will be managed and maintained by the university.
He said: “This project has been an enjoyable one and that is why we wanted to celebrate laying a million bricks at St Marks.
Keith Shipley and Karl Hunt, Site Managers for Phoenix Brickwork, have been instrumental in overseeing the company’s contribution to the development.

Suitable for application onto many different surfaces, Ilumitex has the ability to provide stunning visual impact. Providing huge benefits, Ilumitex is the bespoke wall covering system of choice across the globe. The durability of Ilumitex and easy maintenance were critical factors in the selection of Ilumitex for an award-winning residential accommodation provider, with sites across Europe. Using a selection of standard and glitter flake colour combinations, selected from the extensive Ilumitex and Ilumitextra ranges, the system was initially installed in two student accommodation blocks in the UK. One of these was based in Middlesborough, with the other location in Hull, comprised of five extensive buildings. The huge benefits that Ilumitex provided to these sites prompted its subsequent use for an extensive residential apartment block in Germany. The many attributes of the system have seen Ilumitex used extensively across Europe and beyond. Since 1979 Ilumitex has been transforming the wall space of numerous premium hotels and high-end residential housing projects in Nigeria. Ilumitex has also been the wall covering of choice for application in educational settings, factories, sports stadiums and leisure complexes. In the UK, a large events arena based in East Yorkshire used Ilumitex No. 456 to rejuvenate the wall space areas of the bathroom facilities in the Showground Pavilion. communal environment. Ilumitex provided a seamless finish with no shrinkage. Huge savings were achieved based on the life expectancy of Ilumitex which spans more than 10 years, thereby reducing the need for future redecoration programmes. The resistance of Ilumitex to wear and tear, its ease of maintenance and its ability to hide most imperfections make Ilumitex the perfect long-lasting wall covering solution for this and many other projects. CAPITAL&CENTRIC
THE GOODS YARD PLANS APPROVED FOR £60M STOKE-ON-TRENT LEVELLING-UP PROJECT PLANS to turn a prominent industrial site in Stoke-on-Trent into a vibrant new neighbourhood have been given the green light.
started thinking about how they could use the spaces – that’s before we’ve even commenced construction.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s development control committee today approved the vision for Capital&Centric’s The Goods Yard, paving the way for construction to start later this year. The £60m project will be a major investment in the region, one of three in Stoke-in-Trent backed by the Government’s Levelling Up Fund.
“We want to make Stoke-on-Trent proud and create a neighbourhood with real identity, one that nods to the city’s rich heritage but writes a new, exciting chapter. Our focus has always been on creating a genuine community with everything available to support a city centre lifestyle. People calling the Goods Yard home will have shops, bars, cafes, businesses and green outdoor spaces to meet up right on their doorstep. We can’t wait to get going.”
The Manchester-based social impact developers have worked in partnership with the council on the blueprint, with the approved plans featuring 174 design-led apartments, works spaces for creative start-ups, shops, bars, cafes and a new, bustling public square.
The Goods Yard will write a new chapter for the former Swift House site, located next to Stoke-on-Trent train station – making it HS2 connected – and on the doorstep of Staffordshire University, the Trent and Mersey Canal and the A500.
Tim Heatley, co-founder of Capital&Centric, said: “This is a watershed moment for Stoke-on-Trent and the Goods Yard is going to be mega for the area. People have fully embraced the vision, there’s a real buzz about the future and the neighbourhood. Ambitious indie businesses are already getting in touch with us about setting up shop here and have
ARCHETECH - PAGE 34
Capital&Centric recently gave a first glimpse at new images of how the neighbourhood will look. The latest image shows the new public square, a flexible space for pop-up markets, live music or simply hanging out with friends. The design includes a nod to the railway heritage of the site, with rail-like paths meandering through lush green planters.

We’ve worked hard to bring this development forward quickly, with an exciting range of opportunities that appeal to residents, businesses and visitors to the city. Elsewhere, a discreet ground level entrance will give way to the below-ground basements with looming brick vaulted ceilings, to be restored into a buzzing work and leisure space. Capital&Centric have also revealed details of the new build apartments, to feature exposed concrete details, high ceilings, expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, Juliet balconies, and top-notch finishes. Cllr Abi Brown, Leader of the City Council, said: “It’s fantastic to see this hugely prominent site at a key gateway into Stoke-on-Trent receiving planning approval, meaning work to transform the Goods Yard can now begin. We’ve worked hard to bring this development forward quickly, with an exciting range of opportunities that appeal to residents, businesses and visitors to the city. It builds on other recent landmark developments such as Clayworks and the Smithfield Works concept in the city centre, as well as the increasing prominence of our canal network through the city. “We’re committed to fully delivering our three Levelling Up projects, building on our heritage and supporting a growing economy that’s delivering new jobs and homes right across Stoke-on-Trent. We have a clear plan that is fuelling economic development and transforming major sites right across the city, and this is another tangible sign that Stoke continues to be on the up.” Other key features will see the former Network Rail signal box restored as space for a café/bar or restaurant, whilst the canalside re-opened to visitors.

There’s No Secret To Why Our Hidden Door Systems Are Such a Hit Magicians famously never share the secrets behind their tricks. But at Sugatsune, we take the exact opposite approach.
opens at a touch onto a secret room or concealed passageway. There’s often a hint of some ingeniously complex contraption at work.
perfectly flush with surrounding surfaces when closed. Try it out on visitors - see how many guess there’s a door there first time.
In fact, there’s nothing we like more than demonstrating exactly how our groundbreaking architectural components work. There are no illusions, no sleight of hand, just world class design and engineering expertise in the finest Japanese tradition.
Not so with the MFU1200. As with all of our components, for us the real magic lies in its beguiling simplicity.
As a final touch, the slide mechanism features a two-way damper, providing beautifully controlled motion in both opening and closing. A gentle push, and watch the panel gracefully slide open of its own accord, with minimal effort. We were asked ‘How do you do that?’ more than a few times.
That’s why we love getting out and about to trade shows, putting our products on display, meeting people, and getting hands-on in showing what we offer. KBB Birmingham at the National Exhibition Centre last month was our first opportunity to meet and mingle again post-COVID and it was great to be back! With our products, it really is a case of seeing is believing. We can describe the way they work, the innovative approaches our design teams pride themselves on and our unwavering commitment to premium quality in both form and function. It’s only when you see them in action that you really grasp the magic.
Wow factor There were plenty of ‘wow’ moments at KBB Birmingham. Our sliding door systems drew particular admiration from the many visitors we warmly welcomed to our stand. And none more so than the MFU1200, our exemplary flush sliding door system. Whisper it - that means bona fide hidden doors. You’ve seen it in countless movies. A plain panel in a wall with no outward sign of handle or hinges, which nonetheless
Whether you’re looking to conjure something extra special with a walk-in closet, a hidden study or cubby hole, or discreetly enclosed storage space, the MFU1200 makes the concealed door concept readily available to all.
No handles? No problem The MFU1200 functions with just a single top sliding rail - no bottom rail or floor groove is necessary. This minimal number of parts allows for straightforward installation. But the real secret to the MFU1200 is its motion. Unlike pocket sliding door systems, it doesn’t move directly sideways - there’s no need to build a pocket or a recess in the adjoining. And unlike our equally popular LIN-X lateral hinges, it doesn’t open forwards and across. Instead, the MFU1200 opens back and across - leaving the open door neatly flush with the adjacent wall. The advantage of this compared to the other lateral opening options? You don’t need a handle. Push anywhere on a plain panel to set it back on the rail, and then slide to open. And that’s the trick behind a hidden door, the simple way. The Sugatsune way. Easy adjustment after mounting means you can position the panel to sit
Flush opening for every situation Nor can we be accused of being a one-trick pony with the MFU1200. It is just one of a whole range of solutions we supply for achieving discreet, neat, controlled opening, on everything from small cabinets to full-length wardrobes and interior doors. The aforementioned LIN-X lateral hinge range, for example, means you can optimise use of space by avoiding doors swinging outwards as they open and close, tucking flat against an adjacent surface as they open instead. And our popular HES3D concealed hinges, which are now available for doors weighing from 9kg all the way up to 125kg, provide a similar tidy finish, with their wide opening angle meaning an open cabinet or door tucks neatly out the way flat against the next surface. A box of tricks? For us, it’s more about providing premium options through innovative design and precision engineering expertise. And while there’s plenty of aesthetic value in keeping door mechanisms hidden, there’s no smoke and mirrors about how we do it. Get in touch to find out more.

GEORGE BARNSDALE
FACING THE CLIMATE CHALLENGE WHY AREN’T MORE ARCHITECTS SPECIFYING TIMBER FENESTRATION ON CONTEMPORARY BUILDINGS? “We must recognise the importance of timber in overcoming our climate challenge,” David Warburton MP wrote to his fellow MPs recently. Timber is mooted as the best way of achieving net zero, yet a recent survey by George Barnsdale found that most architects are still reluctant to specify timber fenestration for contemporary new builds; Just 24% compared with 83% for historic/conservation projects and 74% for refurbishment. The majority of architects in the survey preferred aluminium and steel because of concerns around durability and maintenance and the fact that timber is perceived as a bit old fashioned looking compared to other materials. In terms of durability, modern engineered timber windows are scientifically proven to last 65 years or more with minimal maintenance if made to approved standards. However, most contemporary designs favour flush windows and doors which isn’t ideal when it comes to protecting buildings in a four season temperate climate with wide variation in rainfall and temperature.
So, If a timber window company designed buildings, what would they specify? Stephen Wright, Chairman of George Barnsdale explains: “Where possible, the simple answer is protecting the building from rain and harsh sunlight. From the foundations up, the act of displacing water away from the building helps to prevent damp, extends the life of windows and protects the walls of the building too. For instance, overhanging eaves are great for helping to control temperature inside the building as long as you can avoid cold bridging” Whilst traditional details may be at odds with the clean lines of modern building projects, there are lots of ways of achieving the same result using contemporary architectural language and design elements. Peter Barber Architects have mastered the art of combining a British vernacular with the demands of contemporary architecture brilliantly.
What about the positioning of the windows? “Ideally, set the windows back in the reveal – this helps to protect
precision joints, end grain sealing and modern breathable coatings, sitting them on stone would help preserve them even further.
And doors? In order to satisfy Part M of the building regulations (accessibility), there is a tendency to create a contradiction in the need for level thresholds and the demands of a sustainable future. There are details that can be used but many architects have a habitual cognitive bias against timber in favour of aluminium. If tweaks to the design could be made like setting the door back from the edge of the building envelope it would make a difference to longevity. Stephen Wright continues “building regulations requiring level access alongside high weather and thermal performance would require alterations to the basic laws of physics! Maybe it’s time to rethink this?”

REPENTIGNY THEATER AN AMBITIOUS AND UNIQUE PROJECT The new Repentigny Theatre is the result of an architectural competition aimed at offering patrons a variable configuration room with 350 seats for various cultural activities, while also providing a prominent space for classical music. The project completes a civic ensemble called Repentigny Cultural Space, conceived and developed at the heart of the municipality. To appreciate the Repentigny Cultural Space at its true value, a terrace-observatory was conceived to provide visitors with a panoramic view encompassing a local cemetery, the Purification church, the St-Lawrence river, Lebel Island, thematic gardens, the forecourt, and the Diane-Dufresne Art Centre. The space provides citizens with an opportunity to see their surrounding environment, consisting mainly of single-family residences, in a different light. It
ARCHETECH - PAGE 50
also provides an opportunity to strengthen the feeling of belonging to a territory and a community. The intent was for the public spaces of the new Repentigny Theatre to energize the forecourt connecting it to the DianeDufresne Art Centre. The terrace-observatory, the staircasebleacher, the largely windowed hall, and the positioning of the entrance surmounted by a marquee have been designed to maximize interactions within an outdoor space that extends the interior. The objective is to promote the holding of cultural mediation activities and socio-cultural events in an informal setting that complements the programing and contributes to the continuous animation of the place.
“
LES ARCHITECTES FABG
The space provides citizens with an opportunity to see their surrounding environment, consisting mainly of singlefamily residences, in a different light. The Repentigny Cultural Space is an ambitious and unique project, incorporating emerging values shared by the entire population to transform the experience of living together in the suburbs by creating a new public spaces. The goal was for the Repentigny Theatre to be much less introverted than an urban venue, with its public spaces opening onto the exterior, the forecourt, and the gardens. The terrace is topped by a roof made of cross-laminated wood panels which, when illuminated at night, marks the space’s identity on the scale of this new urban park, as does the theatre marquee on the scale of the sidewalk it overlooks. The 2.4m x 12m x 220mm thick panels are suspended under steel beams supported by 300mm diameter HSS, finished with prefabricated tapered ends of the Cast Connex type. This deliberately expressive structure with its asymmetrical diagonals is intended as a lighter and airy counterpoint to the massive structure of the portico of the Diane-Dufresne Art Centre, which is reflected in its basin along the Allée de la Création. Wood is also present on the ceiling of the room’s foyer, which is a large, double-volume space opening onto the outside and featuring a stepped staircase to facilitate informal occupation and the holding of complementary activities. The room can be accessed both from the parterre and from the balcony, depending on the varied activities that can be conducted in cabaret or banquet format, in addition to the conventional configuration of the armchairs on the telescopic bleachers.
PAGE 51 - ARCHETECH
LES ARCHITECTES FABG
To address the variety of activities and occupations, the walls were lined with a device of vertical MDF slats of 19mm x 75 mm, spaced by 38mm and arranged in front of absorbent panels of rock wool, 50 mm thick and concealed by a black geotextile fabric. This device, called an acoustic resonator, has been successfully used in multifunctional venues such as Mont-Laurier, and it offers the advantage of keeping the acoustics of the room alive, while canceling the risks of unwanted floating echo or excess reverberation for amplified shows. The exterior layout provides citizens with a multifunctional civic space that can be easily transformed. The open space
was maintained without planning constraints, energized by the diagonals in the paving that continue inside the entrance hall, and framed by fevers that provide the necessary shade to minimize the heat island effect and offer citizens a pleasant environment in all seasons. SOUND SUSTAINABILITY WITH KNAUF ACOUSTIC CEILINGS Creating sustainable spaces relies on the use of circular materials that maintain their performance over their lifetime and can then be recycled. Circular design is part of the development process of Knauf acoustic ceilings. Made of gypsum, a natural material, they are 100% recyclable, depending on local recycling restrictions. They are also made from up to 30% recycled material as repurposed gypsum boards are used in their production. The tiles also contain biodegradable acoustic felt backing and 100% recycled cardboard. Knauf acoustic ceilings can contribute to BREEAM and LEED credits by reducing building material life-cycle impacts. They do this through third party verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), optimised sourcing of raw materials, not using materials on the dangerous REACH list and reusability of material. Gypsum is low VOC emitting so does not compromise air quality, and Knauf acoustic ceilings also contain activated charcoal in their core which has known properties for absorbing VOCs. This helps improve indoor air quality meaning
Another benefit of gypsum acoustic ceilings is that they offer both absorption and diffusion capabilities. Non-gypsum acoustic products, such as mineral wool tiles, can only absorb sound and require a secondary product to be installed to be able to diffuse sound. Gypsum is also durable, so Knauf acoustic ceiling products have a longer life span than most non-gypsum equivalents, while maintaining their functionality. They can also be repainted which helps to extend the life of a building without wasting any material.
Knauf acoustic ceilings can be used as a primary ventilation ceiling.

KNAUF EVENTS AT CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK Knauf will be hosting a programme of events at its Clerkenwell showroom as part of Clerkenwell Design Week on 24 - 26 May 2022. Each will tie in with the three key themes of health, wellbeing and sustainability. Activities include a mosaic workshop where people will get the chance to create their own mosaic on an AQUAPANEL® board, and an abstract fresco workshop where visitors can paint art using Knauf Airless Finish. CPDs will be held including ‘Why acoustics matter and how to specify them’ on 24 May, and a brand new Knauf CPD on sustainability run in conjunction with Knauf Insulation on 26 May. The Architects Benevolent Society will give a talk on the afternoon of 24 May about the support it offers to the architectural community and their families. Visitors to the showroom will be able to try out Knauf’s new specification design tool, Knauf Planner Suite, with an expert on hand to offer demos and answer questions. Knauf has also pledged to plant a tree for each person who visits the showroom during Clerkenwell Design Week, in partnership with Trees for Cities.

A SKYLINE STATEMENT: THE RENAKER DEANSGATE SQUARE PROJECT WITH HAVWOODS Located in the spectacular city of Manchester is the Renaker Deansgate Square project. Consisting of four skyline buildings that have been beautifully constructed to provide citizens with 1,508 on-trend apartments, the result is a stunning residential building perfect for those seeking a busy and fast-paced lifestyle in the city. Providing warmth, beauty and prestige, Havwoods’Bronzo wood flooring from the Italian Collection was selected for its luxurious look and feel. Exquisitely designed with natural wood tones, the herringbone pattern offsets a rich and characterful aesthetic, creating the illusion of more space throughout. Used across the main living area, hallway and kitchen, each apartment in this building now embraces natural style whilst exuding complete sophistication. As with all the boards from the Italian Collection, Bronzo is constructed with a traditional tongue and groove profile alongside a lacquered finish for extra durability. All of the boards across this range are inspired by the intricate floors of Italy, comprising narrower, thinner blocks that provide more flexibility
In the kitchen, the timeless pattern enhances the appearance of the space, whilst working exceptionally with art deco influences, sage green cabinetry and hanging pendant lights. This look is then carried out throughout the rest of the décor, leaving an interior that unifies and draws the eye.

WORKING TOWARDS BETTER WORKSPACES Across Europe, co-working is continuing to buck the trend of traditional office decline, with an estimated growth of 158% over the next two years. With many companies not demanding a return to the office but conversely trying to remove people from working at home, coworking spaces have proved to be an excellent solution. A good example is here at LUI House in Herford, Germany. Archwerk Architects have developed this four-storey building into a sustainable co-working hub which is fully self-sufficient using heat pumps and PV cells. Complete with large break-out areas, hot desks and meetings rooms, the building exudes an aesthetic and inspiring ambience with high-quality furnishings and topclass media technology. With large open spaces and hard surfaces, the architects specified ultrafine bespoke Troldtekt wood wool acoustic panels

MURAKA UNDERSEA RESIDENCE PANORAMIC VIEWS OF THE WONDERS OF THE INDIAN OCEAN The Muraka at Conrad Maldives, the undersea residence is a two-level structure consisting of space above the sea level and an undersea suite designed for sleeping under the ocean’s surface. The undersea suite features a king-size bedroom, living area, bathroom, and walk-in closet. The undersea bedroom floor level sits five meters (16.4 feet) below sea level, providing uninterrupted views of the surrounding marine environment, which boasts panoramic views of the wonders of the Indian Ocean’s intricate marine life. More than half of the wall and ceiling surface is covered with 7” thick clear acrylic to visually connect the outside and the suite. The underwater spaces span 100 square meters and are accessed through the spiral staircase and an elevator from an overwater living room.

The views of the ocean are breathtaking, but that’s only half of the Maldivian beauty.
In order to minimize the inevitable appearance of heavy steel and concrete, the majority of the interior spaces are upholstered with leather, and the floor is covered with carpet, with which, sound reverberation is also minimized. The interior design and much detailing of finishes were inspired by airplane luxury cabins. Every part of the interior was carefully measured, modulated, mocked up, and installed. Despite the fact that this is the only underwater bedroom in the region, automated privacy screens are integrated into all windows and controlled with a tablet in conjunction with a lighting system, similar to ones in luxury airplane cabins. The Maldives is known for its pristine beach and sea. The views of the ocean are breathtaking, but that’s only half of the Maldivian beauty. The other half exists underwater. There is an underwater ecosystem that is worth showing to the visitors without diving in the sea. Creating safe places where people can calmly observe marine life would help draw attention to what is happening to the sea, recognize the changes, and get inspired. The Zoo were looking to rehouse their existing group of Galapagos tortoises to a new state of the art, highly sustainable building. The original enclosure had been on site for a number of years, the Zoo were wanting to create an environment with the wow factor, using a building which mirrored the Zoo’s ethos of sustainability. Fordingbridge, with over 55 years’ experience, are industry leaders in the field of sustainable buildings, ensuring complete traceability of our supply chain and using our own in-house teams of structural designers, manufacturers, and logistics specialists ensures we achieve the client’s brief. We aim to design and construct inspiring spaces for humans and animals alike by doing the simple things correctly, minimising the energy demand of our buildings, minimising wastage, and ensuring high levels of air tightness and insulation. Fordingbridge were tasked with the concept drawings, structural calculations and producing working drawings, we then worked alongside the zoo’s appointed architect to obtain planning permission. We have worked previously with ZSL on projects, so our experience allowed us to work with maximum effectiveness. applications work together to help achieve, if not exceed, the brief. Following construction of the UK’s first Zero energy retail store for Costa with their Telford Unit, and a subsequent building in Swansea, we were delighted to be approached once again to deliver our third sustainable Eco- pod for the coffee giant. Our custom facility in West Sussex allows us to pre-fabricate all structural elements of our buildings including beams, columns and bracings. We were also able to preassemble a substantial number of parts in the factory, this process not only reduces disruption to the client, but also allowed us as a business to work more efficiently, as a solid day of preassembly at our factory saves the work of 3 days on site. It is our experience that makes this possible, and of course the time saved reduces the impact on our client and their customers alike. With Spring in sight, many will be thinking about getting out in the garden and prepping for the warmer weather. CONCIERGE 3 CONCERT HAS PROVIDED COST MANAGEMENT SERVICES ON MIXED-USE REGENERATION DEVELOPMENT NORTH WHARF GARDENS Real estate consultancy Concert is pleased to announce that the North Wharf Gardens scheme for Concierge 3 has reached practical completion. Concert was involved in the pre, and post contract works, overseeing the cost consulting aspect of this new build development in Paddington, London. The project, which achieved BREEAM Excellent, is part of the Paddington Basin Masterplan, restoring this unique location between Paddington and Edgeware Road. The scheme is constructed on a two-storey basement car park with 19 floors sitting on a reinforced concrete frame. The mixed-use space comprises a significant hotel and hybrid aparthotel development divided between two tenants: a 393-bed Premier Inn and 249 serviced apartments for Wilde by Staycity. Additionally, there is the 240 cover Bar + Block restaurant as well as a 27,000 sq ft MBS Sixth Form building, a new faculty of the nearby Marylebone Boys’ School.
ARCHETECH - PAGE 80
The project work was undertaken as part of an overarching scheme at North Wharf Gardens which endeavoured to create a vibrant, residentially led mixed-use development delivering 485 new homes, affordable business, retail and social and community spaces, including a new primary school, and a new public garden for Paddington. A theme of connectivity is prevalent across the site, with the garden having been built to provide a link between the mix of uses whilst connecting the development to the wider neighbourhoods to improve the social cohesion in the district. To ensure a collaborative team approach was adopted, Concert’s attitude throughout embraced cohesive work with the contractor and the client team, incorporating the brand’s values which pride them on bringing harmony to every project by means of working in coordination alongside the whole project team and investing in fully understanding the client’s needs.

technology in both domestic and commercial installations. Now, more than ever, demand for solar lighting is skyrocketing. Preconceptions that solar lighting is still not adequate for the UK climate are diminishing, with lighting designers, contractors and end users all switching to a new calibre of solar light. It’s clear a ‘paradigm shift’ is happening.
HOW HAS SOLAR LIGHTING BEEN IMPROVED AT LUMENA? Four main aspects had to be tried and tested, to be able to offer Solar lights with a 5 year guarantee
BRIGHTNESS
Solar lights suitable for professional use should incorporate high-capacity LifePO4 lithium or li-ion batteries, and use efficient, modern polycrystalline or monocrystalline solar panels so that optimum charge levels are retained for longer. Charge is preserved very effectively even in lower light levels, therefore illuminating the light for longer.

THE ROOFLIGHT COMPANY
USING BESPOKE PRODUCTS TO PUSH DESIGN BOUNDARIES KATHRYN MULLER, DESIGN STUDIO MANAGER AT THE ROOFLIGHT COMPANY, DISCUSSES HOW TO PUSH THE BOUNDARIES OF AESTHETICS WITH BESPOKE DESIGN ‘Bespoke’ is a buzzword that gets thrown around a lot by designers, developers, and architects – for good reason. It means breaking conventional rules and resetting boundaries. Products crafted specially to cater to the customer’s wants and needs have a special quality because they are inherently unique. For the Rooflight Company, not every project requires a bespoke solution because of our vast range of off-the-shelf options, and we can stretch our standard sizes too. But for those times when a design needs an added ‘wow factor’, or when an ambitious homeowner’s vision is too unique and out there for conventional products, our bespoke team is on hand to step in and consult directly. If you can think of it, our bespoke team can design it. And it feels like they are your team when you engage with them. Not only is it a high value experience but it allows you to reach whatever goal you have in mind.
ARCHETECH - PAGE 86
With bespoke, it’s not just about shape, we can also create products with added capabilities including increased acoustic or thermal performance, obscured glass, security glass, or switchable glass. This flexibility means we can deploy skylights in less traditional areas of a home, like dressing rooms and music studios.
“
If you can think of it, our bespoke team can design it. And it feels like they are your team when you engage with them. One project we worked on involved us creating bespoke skylights to ‘cap’ six low-profile pods of a standing seam roof. Each of the roof’s pavilions had its own unique geometric shape, so not only were the skylights huge, but they were all a slightly different shape. The design team worked closely with the homeowner, who was also
THE ROOFLIGHT COMPANY Each rooflight incorporated edge-to-edge glazing with concealed motorised actuation. The external frame was colour-matched to the terracotta shade of the cladding, further helping to provide a seamless transition between the elevations and maintain the modest utilitarian finish of the exterior. The end result is completely unique and elevates the building from the exterior as well as the interior. The best thing about our bespoke manufacturing process is that it’s nearly as fast as our off-the-shelf options because they are manufactured in the UK. So, why blend into the building next door when you could stand out instead? Use bespoke to push the boundaries.

The photograph was chosen as a tribute to the former factory site which housed a vinyl record pressing plant. Over 1,000 perforated metal sheets were manufactured and supplied for the project. RMIG ImagePerf technology made it possible to reproduce this iconic photograph using various hole sizes. The sheets were subsequently powder coated, making them weather resistant and ensuring that this amazing image will be enjoyed for many years to come. CHALLENGES AND WINS The customer wanted to use a particular image of screaming fans but did not know exactly how to implement it. Therefore, we made a large number of layout suggestions that could solve the task. One challenge was to arrange the perforation so that there was only one row without perforation holes where the panels were to be joined. Otherwise, the lines would become too visible and dominant. Next, it turned out that the image was too narrow to reach around the corners of the facade. We therefore had to lengthen the image with more spectators at the edges to make it fit and look natural. Finally, there was the manufacturing process, which required

a flawless numbering of over 1,000 metal sheets so that the fitters knew exactly where each sheet was to be placed in the puzzle. It required separate tools for each of the sheets. The challenges were solved in a continuous dialogue with the customer, who was so enthusiastic about the process and the result that we have since received five more orders for facade solutions. The Macallan Distillery and Visitor Experience in Craigellachie, Speyside in Scotland is a stunning sight. Five meadow-

covered hills hide the undulating roof of the distillery. The contemporary building combines a wooden roof with glass and steel. Fast, light and green Kerto LVL (laminated veneer lumber) was used as part of the prefabricated roof. The building includes a Visitor Experience centre, three still houses and a mash house with a common roof and fully glazed wall. This reflects the wishes of the Macallan Distillery, a premium brand, whose single malt whisky production dates back to 1824. The goal was a contemporary facility celebrating phasing, authenticity and honesty. “Kerto LVL is a very good engineered wood material, because you can trust the material dimensions,” says Johannes Rebhahn, Sales Director International Timber Projects at Wiehag, who was responsible for the roof construction.

MORE POWER, MORE CONNECTIVITY GEZE have completely upgraded their control panels for smoke and heat extraction systems. Control units are the brain and the power supply of the smoke and heat extraction systems in a building. The new THZ N4 and THZ Comfort replace the previous versions and offer a more powerful power supply, increased connectivity and easier installation. In addition to extracting smoke from staircases the THZ N4 and THZ Comfort can also be used for smaller smoke and heat extraction systems such as a foyer and are suitable for use on new buildings and retrofitting. In large event venues with smoke extraction installed in the roof or with a machine smoke extraction system the THZ N4 is particularly suited for operating fresh air drives such as GEZE’s RWA K 600. YEOMAN SHIELD
IMPACT PROTECTION SYSTEM FIRE DOOR SAFETY MAINTAINED AT WEST LOTHIAN SCHOOLS WITH YEOMAN SHIELD FIRE DOOR SERVICES West Lothian Council schools, Deans Community High School and Armadale Academy, are maintained by Bellrock Group under a contractual PPP3 project agreement. Taking on this maintenance management for the two school buildings places the Bellrock management team as the Responsible Person when it comes to compliance to fire safety maintenance which incorporates fire rated doors. With this in mind, Martin Igoe, Senior FM for Bellrock, engaged with Yeoman Shield Fire Door Services when it came to assessing and protecting the condition of the schools’ fire doors with an impact protection system. As a brand name of Harrison Thompson & Co. Ltd. who are a registered FIRAS Warringtonfire (a UKAS accredited scheme for fire door and passive fire resisting products installation) company, Yeoman Shield Fire Door Team were able to undertake a conformity survey of the doors in both schools. This consisted of an assessment of the condition of the fire doors, noting remedial work required to improve the doors functionality, replacement of doors where required as well as noting advisory door protection products that could improve the look, condition and extend the life cycle of the doors by solving impact damage problems. After an itemised quotation for the work had been raised and accepted, Yeoman Shield directly employed fixing operatives carried out the work simultaneously at both school sites simultaneously in accordance to Bellrock’ s programme. Remedial work to both frame and fire doors, replacement doors as well as Yeoman Shield Fire Rated Protection products which were Door Protection Panels, Door Edge Protectors and PVCu clad Glazing Beads were fitted by the accredited teams following best practice guidance. Martin Igoe commented “Having previously used Yeoman Shield on school projects in Aberdeenshire I was more than happy to again collaborate with Yeoman Shield for the Deans Community High School and Armadale Academy. “Their door protection products are great; not only have Yeoman shield re-certified the old fire doors for conformity, they have also extended the life of the doors by fitting a hard-wearing cladding to each. This makes them more durable for the rigours of school life, they look amazing and are so easy to clean. Further phases of the fire door work have been scheduled for later in the year. WYTHAM CHALET EXTERNAL STEEL STAIRCASE BY SPIRAL UK NOT ALL FIRE ESCAPES ARE CREATED EQUAL – THIS ONE IS MUCH MORE BEAUTIFUL IN FORM THAN ITS FUNCTION REQUIRES The external stair at Wytham Chalet is encased in linear steel caging that instead of feeling like a prison, reflects the quiet serenity of the tree trunks in the setting. Dappled shadows from leafy canopies play tricks on the eye, bringing what could have been a perfunctory build element to life. Spiral UK were invited by specialist contractors Richard Ward Ltd to work with Oxford Architects on this rather special project.
ARCHETECH - PAGE 94
Now a Listed Building just outside Oxford city centre, the chalet started life as a Swiss Hunting Lodge that was dismantled brick by brick in the 1930s and transported to its current site before being gifted to the university in 1942. Oxford Architects were managing the refurbishment and modernisation of the chalet belonging to Oxford University in its use as a specialist teaching space.
SPIRAL UK
Oxford Architects and Richard Ward were careful in their restoration of this historic building, bringing it up to fire safety and building regulation standards - once the resident bats were deemed safe, that is. Part of these works involved a fire escape that needed to pass strict guidelines by both Listed Consent and Building Regs. Spiral UK engineered the design to create a secure escape stair that sat apart from the precious building, only touching at two exit points, and incorporated the security of full height steel bar balustrading and an outward-opening gate at the bottom. This prevented intruders while still allowing quick and safe exit from the building. The stair itself is a hot-dip galvanised (EN ISO 1461), mild steel spiral and the enclosure was powder coated in RAL 7021, finishes that will last for many years to come. This is a lot of metalwork for a natural setting on a Listed chalet building, but the slender vertical design disappears nicely into the flitting shadows of the surrounding trees. The entire structure was built for stability and durability with the end result looking great whilst adhering to building regs and Listed consent, without imposing on the natural beauty of the site. The outcome is very pleasing, a subtle yet striking design that sits beautifully in the landscape, blending successfully with both the darkness of the chalet and the shapes and shadows of the surrounding woodland. A TOUR DE FORCE OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN THE UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE ACHIEVES LITERARY MILESTONE IN EUROPEAN OAK James Latham Ltd recommends WoodEx® Florian European Oak for award-winning new library at Magdalene College, Cambridge Winner of both the Gold Award and the Education and Public Sector category of the Wood Awards 2021, Magdalene College Library in Cambridge is a striking example of sympathetic design, beautiful materials and careful craftmanship Built alongside the Grade I listed Pepys Library, it is the first substantial addition to the main site in over 50 years. The library design is based upon an arrangement of simple brick volumes with timber windows and pitched roofs echoing the gabled architecture of the existing college.

Built alongside the Grade I listed Pepys Library, it is the first substantial addition to the main site in over 50 years. Inside, the building’s structure is clear to see. Glulam beams support cross-laminated timber floor slabs which are supported on load-bearing brick piers. The architect’s intention was for all the key features to appear as an interwoven set of elements. Cambridge-based bespoke joinery firm Wedd Joinery was commissioned to manufacture all the furniture within the library including bookcases, desks and various other pieces. The specification was for solid timber much to the joinery company’s delight with Magdalene College wanting to build something for the future generation. Wedd chose to work with WoodEx® Florian European Oak on the advice of timber and materials supplier James Latham (Lathams). The team recommended the product due to its high-quality finish and strong performance. Lathams extensive network and key supplier relationships provided a further advantage, as they were able to fulfil the specification and meet the demand for such a large order. In his summation of the project, Jim Greaves, Chair of Buildings Judges, Wood Awards 2021 said, “The Gold Award winner this year, Magdalene College Library, is a tour de force of architectural design and achievement. Experienced sequentially as they lead one through the building, the different spaces and forms of the reading rooms are quite beautiful. The brick, timber and stone have been designed exquisitely with a thorough understanding of their intrinsic qualities. A truly outstanding building.”

JAMES LATHAM
“I genuinely believe that a solid oak project on this scale is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we are delighted to have been involved in it. The fact that we were part of the team that was recognised so highly for that work really is the icing on the cake.” Exclusive to James Latham, WoodEx® is a versatile, premium quality, engineered hardwood timber product made from either European Oak, Sapele or Red Grandis. Combining high performance with aesthetic appeal, WoodEx® is often used for applications such as windows and doors because it provides a better thermal performance than solid wood and is highly stable and resistant to warping, hugely reducing the need for maintenance. And, while its appearance is akin to solid timber, it has the advantage that the visual face and two sides are clear of defects making it ideal for joinery projects. “We love working hand in hand with our customers, to help them to find the materials that are the right fit for their projects,” said Adrian Roker at Lathams. “It has been amazing to watch this project come to life, with one of our highest performing products being used to such an exceptional standard.” Simon Lock, commercial director, Wedd Joinery said: “We have worked with Latham’s for over 50 years. They will always be one of the companies we go to at the early stage of a project involving solid timber. At the end, it came down to the important balance of service, quality and price.
ARCHETECH - PAGE 98
The timber was provided by Italian-headquartered hardwood sawmilling and wood product manufacturer Florian. The familyowned group has operations across Italy, France, Croatia and Hungary and supplies customers in 78 countries. Florian’s sales to the UK are worth approximately Euro 20m, and nearly half of that is sold through Lathams. For the Magdelene College Library project, Lathams supplied over £300,000 of WoodEx® Florian European Oak. www.lathamtimber.co.uk

TRY RADIWARM’S ELECTRIC PIPELESS RADIATORS
OSB AND STRAW HIDE CONNECTS WITH WILDLIFE
RadiWarm’s pipeless electric radiators are winning fans across the domestic and commercial building sectors. The Signature Radiator range - with software controlling the patented in-built boiler, thermostat and pump - ensures energy efficient heating, ideal for most settings. It is a simple and nearly maintenance free system. The range is waterfilled, LOT 20 and IP44 compliant. Available in various sizes, radiators arrive sealed and ready to be plugged into a standard electric socket. Complemented by the silicasand filled Economy+ entry-level range, the two can be mixed and matched because they are operated from the same control systems.
A nature hide designed and built by post graduate students from Kingston School of Art using straw bales and SterlingOSB Zero supplied by West Fraser, formerly known as Norbord, will help neighbourhood school children to connect with wildlife. The project is part of the March course run by Takeshi Hayatsu, principal of Hayatsu Architects. A mini architectural design competition sprung from a visit to the nearby Tolworth Moated Manor nature reserve. The competition was judged by local ecology action group Citizen Zoo and community action group Community Brain. The winning design was a wooden hide based on two interconnecting vertical cylinders. Takeshi was particularly pleased with the use of SterlingOSB Zero as the “surface texture resembles the texture of the straw bales” used in the construction.
The 7-day Controller is an intelligent, 7-day programmable thermostat connected by RF link to each radiator. Or the Smart Controller offers the same functionality through an app.

7 INDOOR AIR QUALITY Indoor air quality is of prime importance. Virus transmission occurs more readily inside than out. Inadequate ventilation and insufficient fresh air allow pathogen build up, increasing the risk of infection. Regular ventilation in enclosed areas can reduce infection by over 70%. Vectaire products bring fresh air into the home and remove impurities. Condensation and pollution (and pathogen) levels can be controlled continuously, economically and at really low noise levels, whilst ensuring minimal heat loss. The Midi, Maxi and Maxi Plus MVHRs with integral acoustic attenuation do that. Installation is simple. These “BY-AT” models incorporate summer bypass and frost protection with a variable choice of trickle, boost and purge speeds. They are SAP PCDB listed and are the solution to better ventilation and reduced noise in residential properties.
