Feeding the City:
Grow+ Cook+ Consume
Programme Urban farm, cooking school, restaurant Software

Continuing from the masterplan’s objective of creating a new activity magnet around the lake, the thesis aims to both attracts people and promote a sustainable way of consuming by having a complete cycle of food in one building. Living in a city has becoming the choice of many as human population grows. By 2050, the urban population is projected to grow to be 66% of the total population compared to 39% in 1980 (United Nations, 2014). Instead of relying on rural farm to feed the urban population, the thesis proposed a combined programme of urban farming, cooking school and restaurant to develop a sustainable way of feeding the city dwellers, where food are locally produced from raw ingredients to waste products. The whole process of food making can be witnessed by the users to stimulate appreciation which can reduce food wastage.

This urban project is an attempt to find the answer to the question “what if the Water Tower is flooded back to the state it was back in the 14th century?”. Chester is a great city famous with it’s rich history and medieval character surrounded by the Roman City Wall. The city has been expanding beyond the city wall to the east and north but the western part of wall seems to be neglected with out of place retails and residential units.
The proposed ‘New Lake’ masterplan explores the possibility to solve the problem the western part of Chester in a more dramatic way. The area around the Water Tower, which is currently used as green park, is flooded with water, creating a new lake and making the tower a precious centrepiece to the new masterplan. The lake will be used for water activities and transport while the surrounding water edge is filled with community centre, boat rental, restaurants, shops and offices to bring human activity to the neglected western part of Chester.

Before delving into our urban design project, we did an analysis on the site to find potential or problems that could be used to determine our urban strategy. The main factor that leads to our idea of flooding the Water Tower in our urban design proposal is the historical state of the place. This old image shows the River Dee used to flow right against the city wall which is a potential to express the history of the place. The site also benefits from the great walking experience along the canal which can be reinforced in the new masterplan.

After the urban design project, further research was done to find topics, issues or programme that can be explored in the thesis project. I am interested in the cycle of food which combine growing, cooking and eating.

In term of architectural language, I have always liked the way timber building looks. Research mainly focused on how timber is used for different application in different buildings.

The theme for this housing is mixed type, mixed use and medium density. Mixed type with variety of house units tailored for different type of potential residents. Mixed use by absorbing the site’s current light industrial use into one building, together with the houses. Medium density to achieve the optimum use of land versus comfort and accessibility.

Urban design with the main focus on connecting the one and only train station in Ellesmere Port to the prominent shopping park, the Cheshire Oaks. At the moment, the Cheshire Oaks favours cars as means of transport with large car parks. We aim to create a more sustainable, pleasing and serene green route along the M53 motorway to reach the shopping park.

Evolution of Office For my specialist study, I did a research on the evolution of office from Taylorist office to Burolandschaft to modern headquarters and co-working space. Future possibilities of office is also investigated as the definition of office keeps getting blurred and work becoming more digital-oriented.

Lynch’s Urban Theory
At the early stage of the urban design project 1, students are required to write an essay on one of three urban design writings, Aldo Rossi’s Architecture of the City, Kevin Lynch’s Image of the City or Gordon Cullen’s The Precise Townscape. I wrote about Lynch because it is the most pragmatic with examples like La Rambla in Barcelona. 2020 Portfolio Haziq Kadir
