Urban Food Re-Public Design Project | Birkenhead, Liverpool | England An urban food system has the agenda to guide the development of a sustainable and integrated system of food production, processing, distribution, marketing, consumption and waste management in an urban landscape. An urban food system integrates live, work, and play into the activities of a productive landscape. An integrated urban system can be created through developments of railroad lines, roads, pedestrians, biking trails, bike lanes. The foundation of a sustainable community conformity of food infrastructure. This can be utilise the urban food production infrastructure for urban growth as criteria hence especially the local community in Birkenhead nearby the site proposed.

people in Birkenhead specifically.

The urban food system or known as the “Urban Food re-Public” utilising to each other’s resources through new infrastructure. The distribution of food products should be in conjunction with the consumer or public. It is common amongs different agencies, NGO’s, and governments in Wirral. Amongst all urban food producers and consumers, marketing is the common strategy. Larger series of affordable food access points should be develop supplying healthy fresh through cooperative market outlets. Waste management section, the urban food re-public must be integrated with a waste recycling and reuse programme in a community to recycle the nutrients in the food production system.

These urban transformation underutilised space into a public resource, it creates opportunities for social interaction, greater community, self-sufficiency and engagement scope for young people in Birkenhead specifically.

As urban designers, it is a vital tool in the growth of any community especially in the growth of any community. Also food is given greater impact to both local and global issue. Birkenhead is lack of productive urban land, uncontrolled urban growth, jobless, lack of local food markets stability, general lack of societal knowledge of food growing which prepared into this urban design report discussions and arguments.

The following outline sources as highlighted of this urban design report and assists future design implementations from overall site programmes: Design Documentations:Heritage and conservation areas Traffic management strategies Urban transportation networks Cycle and footpath networks and policies Green networks and urban parks Leisure and tourism policies

Project Brief The site proposed area in the north of Woodside ferry Mersey, past the remains of Birkenhead Priory and the Queensway tunnel, Birkenhead Priory, Priory Street (one of the oldest buildings) in Merseyside, Liverpool. It was recorded in the National Heritage and also in the List of England and Scheduled Ancient Monument founded in 1150 by Harmon de Masci, 3rd Baron of Dubham for Benedictine Order. Birkenhead first Parish Church, St Mary’s Tower opened in 1821. The ground of the priory. In 20th century, the construction of Queensway Tunnel had to redeveloped large amount of residential housing within the parish to make way of construction. portal to the large are of derelict land around the former gas works and central rail station. This area is heavily bisected by transport infrastructure and any proposals will have to deal with a complex inter-woven network of road and rail routes. Within the study area are a number of significant historic structures from graving docks to the priory ruins, St Mary Church closed in 1974 and was partly demolished a year later for safety reasons. The tower has been since been refurbished and dedicated to those who died on HMS Thetis (Soldiers). Wirral waters is proposed for the area to the north of the town centre and the commercial centre itself borders the western edge of the project area. Numerous points within the study area have excellent views back towards Liverpool. The site will give a strong identity of its existing movements due to unlimited accessible within walking distance to visitors parking space, Mersey railways line, Metro buses, travelers from Birkenhead City Centre will only take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to arrive. Whereby car exiting from the Birkenhead tunnel would circles around to our site using the primary road network to the secondary road network will be connected to the primary road. The primary will be two ways road and secondary road will be a one way, with the current situation the streets are too narrow and will only allow a single vehicle to access at any one time.

ondary road will be a one way, with the current situation the streets are too narrow and will only allow a single vehicle to access at any one time.

Site Potential/Theoritical thinking Throughout our urban design group discussions, the connection between urban growth, urban agriculture and Urban food therefore functions primarily as a “catalyst” to spur systemic changes potentially to the site and a culture of consumption that is increasingly viewed as positive and crucial. Additionally, key elements and characteristics are consistent with and is being reinforced by new approaches to urban design and development, which emphasise diffuse, informal, community-based initiatives, open space, green space and “soft edge” interventions over centralised, over-arching, achieving excellent views back towards Liverpool City in our Urban masterplanning schemes. It embodies an understanding of urban environments, characterised by the urbanism critical issues movement, which seeks to integrate cities into a continuous, featured of ecosystem services to address human physical, psychological, water, air, food, and animal environments understandably. In addition, our concerns of troubling trends of increasing population, water depletion, fertilizer resources shortages, depletion of fish stocks, soil nutrient loss and consumption, over the capacity of the existing food system continue to adequately supply over 20 activities and events future in Wirral. Urban agriculture is part of range of solutions that will contribute not only to the “livability” of urban areas survival but the consumers.

In order to make the Urban Market the “center of local food excitement,” the planning team devised concept that facilities for food production, food retailing and restaurants, outdoor seasonal farmers’ and crafts market, produce distribution, kitchen Studios, food and health education, and events. The core of the Urban Market will be vendor stalls that house independent, owner- operated businesses featuring a wide range of local fresh and prepared foods. These stalls have been designed to maximise food production within the Market, such as bread baking, butchering and sausage making, cheesemaking, ice cream/candy making, and pasta production. The tenant mix will also include produce, seafood, flowers, and a variety of ethnic foods.

space requirement The Urban Market offers numerous opportunities for partnerships in the education, health care, economic development, and social service sectors. For example, conversations have started with a local university to partner with the Urban Market and operate the kitchen incubator. The Urban Market will provide community-based facilities for the wellness initiatives of local health care providers. To address the exploding youth obesity epidemic, the Urban Market will provide hands-on opportunities for kids to be involved with every aspect of planting, harvesting, preparing, and eating healthy foods, including the country’s first teaching kitchen designed specifically for college/university.

Urban Markets

With facilities to support food production, marketing, distribution, and sales, the Urban Market will provide start-up and business development opportunities for food entrepreneurs and spur creation of new businesses. In addition, the Urban Market will support agri-tourism by encouraging local residents and tourists to visit urban agriculture and urban food throughout the region.
