ABOUT ME

I am an Undergraduate Architecture graduate from Liverpool John Moores University. I have grown up in Irby, on the Wirral, and I am looking for Part 1 Architectural Assistant jobs in the north west. I have a full drivers license so I am happy to commute if neccessary.

I have always been highly interested in Sustainability and the best ways to design within the changing climate, and designing with the risks and rewards of the future in mind. During my time at university, I have worked on many different projects, such as, urban development and city design, climate emergency projects, and my final cdp project; turing’s library.

I am fully versed in many different softwares, Including autocad, revit and enscape. However, I am eager to learn various and new types of softwares in order to expand my knowledge and design capabilities. I also enjoy hand drawing as it helps my initial conceptual designs. Attending site visits has always interested me, as this allows me to see the surrounding context and take this into account during my design process.

TURING’S LIBRARY

INTEGRATED DESIGN 3: COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN PROJECT

INITIAL MASSING SKETCHES

PROJECT BRIEF

THE LIBRARY HAS EVOLVED OVER THOUSANDS OF YEARS AND CONTINUES TO REINVENT ITSELF, IN DESIGN AND FUNCTION, TO THIS DAY. LIBRARIES ARE ONE OF THE MOST WELL KNOWN BUILDING TYPES IN THE REALM OF CIVIC BUILDINGS AND ,THEREFORE, ARE PROTECTED AND CHERISHED WITHIN SOCIETY. HOWEVER, HOW CAN LIBRARIES STAY AFLOAT WHEN A WORLD OF KNOWLEDGE CAN BE HELD IN THE PALM OF ONES HAND? ADDITIONALLY, WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE CIVIC SPACES AND ACTIVITIES CURRENTLY PROVIDED BY LIBRARIES? HOW MIGHT LIBRARY BUILDINGS EVOLVE TO THRIVE WITHIN AN INCREASINGLY DIGITAL LANDSCAPE? INITIALLY, I BEGAN TO ANALYSE THE ‘HYBRID’ LIBRARY TYPOLOGY, LOOKING INTO BERNARD TSCHUMI’S ‘TRANSPROGRAMMING’, ‘CROSSPROGRAMMING’ AND ‘DISPROGRAMMING’. THIS RESEARCH INSPIRED ME TO DESIGN A HYBRID LIBRARY THAT GOES BEYOND THE DICTIONARY TERM OF ‘50% PHYSICAL AND 50% DIGITAL’. IN ADDITION, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE DESIGN RESPECTS THE LIBRARY AS A CIVIC BUILDING.

A FEW DESIGN PRINCIPLES I SET AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PROJECT WERE;

PROGRAMMATIC INTERPRETATION

- THE LIBRARY SHOULD BE A MULTI-PURPOSE BUILDING THAT PROVIDES BOTH PHYSICAL AND ELECTRONIC RESOURCES. IT WILL HAVE SPACES FOR BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS, SPACES FOR COMMUNAL STUDY, AS WELL AS PRIVATE ROOMS. THE LIBRARY WILL ALSO HAVE A TRADITIONAL READING ROOM SPACE AND OFFER COMPUTERS, LAPTOPS, KINDLES AND IPADS THAT CAN BE BORROWED FOR USE IN THE BUILDING.

- THE LIBRARY WILL ALSO HAVE SPACES FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS, AND A CAFÉ FOR VISITORS TO EAT AND DRINK. - FURTHERMORE, THE LIBRARY WILL ACCOMMODATE A SECRET SPEAKEASY IN THE BASEMENT TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE NIGHT LIFE OF THE STREET.

- THE LIBRARY IS DESIGNED TO ACCOMMODATE SILENT FLOORS AT THE TOP LEVELS AND FLOORS THAT MAY BE LOUDER AT THE BASE SO THERE IS A DIVIDE FOR POTENTIAL DISTRACTIONS.

SUSTAINABILITY IS OF FUNDAMENTAL IMPORTANCE WITHIN ALL OF THE PROJECTS I UNDERTAKE. THE GOAL WAS TO MAKE THE LIBRARY AS SELF-SUFFICIENT AS POSSIBLE, PROVIDING RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES, RAIN WATER HARVESTING TANKS AND THICK LOAD BEARING WALLS THAT TRAP HEAT, FOR EXAMPLE. I HAVE FAVOURED GLAZING, OVER ACHIEVING PASSIVHAUS STANDARDS, AS I BELIEVE NATURAL LIGHT IS KEY TO ONES MENTAL AND PHYSICAL WELLBEING. HOWEVER, NATURAL VENTILATION CAN OCCUR BY OPENING WINDOWS.

THE DESIGN OF THIS BUILDING RESONATED WITH MY DESIGN PRINCIPLES, AES THETICALLY, AS WELL AS STRUCTURALLY. WAS INSPIRED TO DESIGN WITH MASS TIMBER, THEREFORE, I DECIDED TO UTILISE A FULLY GLULAM STRUCTURE. THE STRENGTH OF GLULAM ALLOWS FOR LONG SPANS WITHOUT THE NEED FOR TOO MANY COLUMNS OBSTRUCTING THE FLOOR PLAN

BUILDING FOUNDATIONS ARE DESIGNED TO DISTRIBUTE THE WEIGHT OF THE NEW BUILDING EVENLY AND PROVIDE A FIRM FOOTING THAT IS RESISTANT TO HARMFUL LATERAL LOADS. AFTER ANALYSING DIFFERENT STRATEGIES, BELIEVE A FOUN DATION WALL FOOTING WOULD BE THE MOST BENEFICIAL TO MY BUILDING. ONE FOUNDA TION WALL CAN GO FROM THE BASEMENT TO THE GROUND, ANOTHER FROM THE GROUND FLOOR TO THE GROUND AND THE GLULAM COLUMNS ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE BUILDING CAN CARRY LOADS THROUGH BOLTED CONNECTIONS.

INTEGRATED DESIGN 2: WEATHER OF NOT AND SELECTED SUPPORTING STUDIES

PROJECT BRIEF INITIAL IDEAS

Within Britain, sea levels have continued to rise since the 20th century and are expected to accelerate throughout the 21st century, increasing the risk of flooding (Mokrech, 2008). RIBA (n.d.) explains that one in six UK homes is at risk of flooding, a statistic that is expected to double within 30 years. Therefore, architects, and everyone in the construction industry, must design for the changing climate.

‘Embrace the Flood’ Weather station sets out to combat the risk of flooding, as well as accepting flood water into the landscape, creating natural water features for visitors to interact with. This strategy is undertaken by creating an outdoor ampitheatre that embraces flood water when it over flows from the lake. Also, rainwater is encouraged to flow from the roof and into a dipped landscape that collects water for the buildings drainage system.
