About me I am a third year student just finishing my Architecture’s degree at Liverpool John Moores university. My expectaions for this degree were immediately surpassed, as the course was inbedded with my passions of mathematics, art and design. My computer and design skills have developed thoroughly, however I know there is still oppurtunity for these skills to become even more advanced. I have extremely enjoyed this course, especially my comprehensive design project in third year and the Urban design module in second year. I excelled the most in research projects and essays as I was very interested in getting different perceptions and developing my knowledge of architects and architecture. I am yet to decide on my architectural career path however I am excited for future creative projects within the industry.

BA Year 3 Semester 2: Comprehensive Design Project Living Art Gallery The final project in my final year was called the Living Art Gallery. A living art gallery combines culture, artistic style and techniques. It is a short term museum that holds permanent and temporary exhibitions and a residential buidling that has accomadation for 12 international artists and 4 translators. The artists stay for 2 years and produce art in communual studio spaces and workshops. The artists work with a range of media including wood, metal and painting. The site for my project was Blundell street in the Baltic triangle area of Liverpool City Centre. It is currently used as a car park with an old steel portal frame. This influenced my concept as I could invision the art gallery being this long elongated structure that people would travel along and it being constructed by this industrial, portal frame. The site images are shown to demonstrate the portal frame and the site terrain. The drawing is my concept sketch from the beginning of the project.

I was tasked to make my own brief which would include all the things to make an art gallery and an apartment block succesful. The apartment block had to have 16 rooms, 12 for artists and 4 for translators. I wanted to make sure the residents had lots of space in their flats with plenty of outdoor space. I designed a mezzanine style flat with the office being on the top floor overlooking the living room. As the artists are to have a communual working space, the office area is only a small space. The residents will also have a balcony and a garden that is accessed using the mezanine floor. The artists have a communual dining hall on the 5th floor, which is why they only have a kitchenette in their flat. The dining hall takes the whole floor, allowing for panoramic views to be seen while they eat. This space allows the artists to bond, communicate and become friendlier while they stay for 2 years.

The orginal research for the CDP was transitional space which ended up being a considerable influence for the art gallery. The research proved that transitional space, their use in public galleries or museums and how intermediate spaces are necessary for physical comfort aswell as mental well being and have a large contribution to the flow and spatial sequence of the building. This concept transformed the design to become an art gallery with courtyards and gardens in between each exhibition space, which acts as a pallete cleanser for the visitors. The building also comprise of a gift shop, reception area, cafe, toilets, staff room and kitchen. I have included the mood boards used throughout my project to demonstrate the inspiration for each of the spaces. They have also been used to develop the understanding of how the interior of these spaces shall look.

BA Year 3 Semester 1: Weather of Not
For the weather or not project in year 3, the brief stated to design an environmentally friendly building which could use the weather and the surrounding environment to run the building, by converting it to energy for example. The module began by researching responsive facades and their impact on climate change as well as their use in the future of architecture. Responsive facades are envelopes of buildings that have the ability to change their shape, their form and characteristics in response to their surrounding environment. Factors like lighting and temperature can be altered through the facade as well as the skin being used as a protective layer. From this research, I developed a design with the title “Dress for the Weather”.

The site for this project was Festival gardens in the South of Liverpool. The site was used as a wasteland but was revitalised after the toxteth riots and opened up as an international Garden festival.

My building featured a double facade made from copper wall panels, which in time would oxidise and turn blue. Corten steel was used for the stairs as a complimentary orange tone due to its rustic appearance. The building consisted of a cafe, semiar room, gallery and exhibiton space and was for the use of educational purposes, for the learning and teaching of the environment and sustainability.

Personal profile As a determined and hardworking individual, I take any challenge I am faced with, head on. I am a third-year architecture student with an immense passion for my subject. I have a keen interest in urban design architecture and a skill set that is adaptable to many situations. Education 2018 – present – Liverpool John Moores University BA Hons in Architecture (accredited by RIBA and ARB) - - -
First year 2:1 Second year 2:1 Third year predicted 2:1
Relevant modules – urban design, CDP - living art gallery, technology and practice, history and theory, structural and environmental strategies. 2016 – 2018 – The Robert Napier School, Sixth Form A-levels in Applied Science, Product Design, Mathematics. EPQ in Architecture. 2011 – 2016 – The Robert Napier School 8 GCSEs (A*- B) including Mathematics, Art and Design, Engineering and Physics. Work experience 2016 – Clay Architecture ltd As part of the work experience initiative at my secondary school, I spent time at a local architectural practice. During my time there, I shadowed the director of the practice, gaining an inside perspective into the management of the company. Additionally, I accompanied senior members of the firm on site visits to ongoing projects and aided them in the design process. This cemented my desire to pursue a career in architecture. 2016 – Volunteering at Age UK day centre During 2016 I volunteered at an Age UK day centre, offering support and care to vulnerable seniors. As part of my role, I provided companionship and conversation to lonely elders within the community. Additionally, I was involved in the general support and care of the members including aiding them in daily tasks such as gentle exercise and keeping them intellectually stimulated.

2016 – 2019 – Jesses café Between 2016 and 2019 I worked as a waitress and kitchen aid at a café in my local area, Chatham, Kent. Through out my time here, I gain experience in hosting and hospitality as well as customer service and cash management. As my first job, the position helped me improve my confidence and independence. Skills profile Determination and problem solving – I have developed my ability to effectively and efficiently problem solve and gained a great deal of determination throughout both my academic and professional career. During my undergraduate studies, I have been faced with a whole host of situations that require grit and determination to overcome. An example of which would be the completion of my CDP during the global pandemic. The pandemic had demonstrated my determination as I have had to improvise and carry out my 3rd year studies under lockdown restrictions and with little to no face to face contact from academics. This has proven difficult as I have been prevented from visiting potential construction sites and even obtaining modelling materials. I have managed to create a CDP solely relying on the resources within my home. This has seen conceptual models made from cereal boxes and virtual meetings with environmental and structural consultants. Additionally, my professional career has aided my problem-solving abilities as I had to be able to adapt and think on my feet. This was the case when dealing with customers, resolving any complaints, and managing high volumes of footfall in a timely fashion. Communication – Again, within my professional and academic careers, I have advanced my communication skills. Working in a high-speed environment, I learned to concisely communicate with colleague’s in order to keep customer satisfaction high. I also learned the value and importance of teamwork within the workplace. This has extended into my academic career as teamwork and communication have been key aspects leading to the success of projects. IT skills including CAD, Indesign and Sketchup – Over my time at John Moores, I have developed my IT skills and gained extensive experience working with software such as CAD, Indesign and Sketchup. In the past year, I have also gained experience working remotely from home. Examples including site analysis using satellite imaging, virtual structural and environmental consultation meetings, and review presentations over streaming site. Creativity – LJMU has offered me the opportunity to expand my creativity and design abilities. I have taken workshops on prospective/ axonometric drawing, and structural drawing, including floorplans. I have always had a passion for art, particularly drawing. This is something that has stayed with me throughout my academic life. I studied fine art at A-level and specialise in photo realistic portraits, which is something I continue to do as a hobby.
