H2O JOUNREY TO SUBMERSION Water, otherwise known as the chemical formula H2O, is a transparent fluid which forms the world’s oceans, lakes, streams and rain. The element immerses itself into the very foundations of life, becoming an integral ‘ritual’ throughout day-to-day activties. This liquid embodiment of fluidity and movement lends its form to buildings such as bath houses; which have welcommed and submerged its visitors throughout time. This project intends to rediscover the rituals found within bath house architecture as a sensory experience; inspired by the bathing beliefs as far back as Ancient Rome to the prestigious architecture of Therme Vals, by Peter Zumthor. In addition to the fundamental rituals found within bath houses, we shall explore the socialogical and societal impact this form of architecture may have on the surrounding community; extending to the outer regions of Liverpool. A concept which was born within the Ancient Baths of Rome and Greece, where the baths were seen as a retreat, where all walks of society could coexist. The programme will primarily focus on the fundamental activities commonly found within spas and bathhouses. A multitude of pools and spa lounges will be at the heart of the composition. However, this may extend to include other components commonly found within Baths, such as cafes and social spaces - Enabling the people to interact with within a ‘melting-pot’. This brief stands as a catalyst for the conceptual exploration of water and bathhouse rituals. It will underpin the core beliefs of what the architecture intends to achieve. However, it should be seen as its rudimentary stage of evolution; where it shall be developed in an iterative process until a final design is produced.

Queens Dock Bathhouse breaks down each stage of the journey, allowing visitors to immerse themselves within the climates and escape from the day-to-day struggles of modern life. The journey consists of 5 main steps: Arrival, where the visitor embarks on their passage and is greeted within the atrium (inspired by the Roman Baths). Undressing, which allows the person to prepare themselves in adequate attire for bathing. Immersion, changing the climate around the individual which poses numerous healing qualities. Rest, which allows the person to reflect on their journey. And finally, submersion, which concludes the journey with various bathing opportunities from private pools to a public pool.
