School of the Photography and the Digital Image 2020 Portfolio David Mullaly

Brief The School of the Digital Image, is a specialised building catering towards the production of digital media, a field that is rapidly expanding and developing and therefore the building will need to be able to cater towards this. By offering a location that can offer the specialisation required for the field whilst also being flexible enough to adapt to changes and developments, the building differs from regular art or photography school
The Baltic Triangle is a region south of Liverpool city centre, and the hub of the creative and digital industries within the city. It’s industrial heritage lends itself to new start ups with adaptable floor area within the old warehouses which dominate the area. The solution to provide spaces within the open plan warehouse floors is often to place temporary sheds within, which can be moved and modified to cater to the specific needs of firms. By taking that idea, and expanding on it, modules can be input into a frame which can be replaced and changed out to best cater for the rapidly changing requirements , both spatially and technologically. 6

Concept Sketch The early concept for the scheme elevated the school above the ground, so that it is given to the public domain. Bridges connect the 2 buildings so that the urban grid is preserved whilst evoking the industrial character of the area using the typology so often found connecting warehouses of the period.

Urban Strategy
210x148mm image, but TECHNICAL NOTE requires full bleed, to get the 210mm width - so image actually 213mm wide to give 3mm bleed overlap to outside edge and 151mm high to give overlap to bottom edge

The site’s location on a key intersection within the Baltic Triangle makes the it’s interaction with its surroundings crucial. Connecting the city centre to the cultural centre of the Baltic Triangle as well as the Ropewalks and Georgian Quarter to the Waterfront going east to west. Making the most of the green space surrounding the site, the ambition of extending the truss structure that elevates the school is to enclose the sliver of grass that runs along Park Lane, reclaiming it from the road and making it more usable as a piece of urban green as well as protecting the pavement and cycle lane. In addition, the act of the building reaching out towards the city centres encourages pedestrian movement along this axis, increasing the permeability of the edge of the Baltic Triangle. The addition to the Baltic Green, lifting up the corner creates a man made slope, creating a place for to sit whilst creating a pathway that naturally follows the pedestrian movement between the City, the School and the Mersey. The space below creates a shelter for bike storage.

Exploded Axonometric Image shows the ground floor and basement levels of the school. By enclosing public domain below public terrace, the space is better suited for the Liverpool climate, opposed to being open to the elements, therefore being usable throughout more of the year.

Internal Views Pictured top is a view looking from south to north through the Atrium within the school, with the studio, open to the right. The open plan studios allow for free knowledge sharing and adaptability, and by leaving opened onto the main circulation within the building they are exposed to the atmosphere and movement around the building.
Pictured bottom is a views showing the contrast of light and dark within the event space, looking towards the tunnel connecting the two buildings. Also visible is the truss structure that elevates the school above the semipublic domain.

Hebden Bridge Weather Station 2020 Portfolio David Mullaly

Hebden Bridge Hebden Bridge is a small milling town in the Calder Valley, North Yorkshire. The valley thrived during the industrial revolution as a hub of fabric production, but in more recent times the valley has become synonymous with flooding. With multiple water sources converging in the town, coupled with the impermeable nature of the clay soil which makes up the surrounding areas geology, the valley is naturally susceptible to flooding, but has been exacerbated by humanity. The ever increasing impacts of climate change and the impermeability of the built environment, covering the rivers natural flood plane. Within the town, the river has been walled in, as a desperate attempt to try to control the river, but as pictured left (from the boxing day floods in 2015) this is not a viable solution. In order to reduce the impact of flooding on the built environment, architecture must seek to exist in union with the river in a symbiotic relationship. The Hebden Bridge Weather Station offers a platform for the river to be studied and understood.
