Thesis Project A diagonal atrium enclosed by faceted glass protrudes from the exterior of the Flux Garde A office building, which is situated on the waterfront adjoining to the Brunswick Docks & the River Mersey in the Dingle Area of Liverpool. The Flux offices house two work zones, introvert and extrovert spaces which are all separated by 3 atriums featuring within the building, offering extrovert spaces for employees which brings the opportunity for a chance for physical encounters and communication. Vice versa, introvert spaces offer individual work zones with minimal encounters and communication within the floor footprint. As students & architects, we have experienced the advantages: speed, precision, smoothness. But we have also suffered one crucial consequence: the relationship between the worker and his computer, which isolates him in a bubble of introverted performance, inaccessible to collective overview. I therefore have designed a building that lavishly broadcasts the work of individuals for shared and individual analysis. The new office block is injected with a 3 central atrium that opens up to the river Mersey and framing the view of the city on the opposite diagonal.

Sections The sections on the left show the building through long and short section. The long building section shows the parametric columns which will be supporting the lightweight roof structure to conduct actvities to improve the productivity of the users. Environmental strategies such as rain water harvesting will also be implemented through the use of these columns. The central atrium is also shown in both sections, this will be the focal point of the building being used as a form of vertcial movement with diaganol views cutting from the River Mersey back to the city framing the Liverpool Cathedral. Work spaces have been seperated into introvert and extrovert spaces which differs on each floor to achieve the sectional strategy that was proposed.

The view above shows an external street scene for the proposal. The second skin is visble on this figure shows the incorporation of biophilia which was a major driving concept behind this scheme to heighten and improve user wellbeing during office hours, stepping away from the generic uses and formats of existing offices.

The view above shows the central atrium within the building that will be used for vertical movement with views of each floor visible. The introvert floors will be accessible from the central staircore, however acoustic glazing will be placed around the atrium to encourage sight lines through the building but to reduce noise pollution on floors being used for individual work zones.

The view above shows an example of an extrovert office space with views of the surrounding context, here collaborative tasks can be carried out with facilities to relax where ideas can be pursued and shared. Similar layouts will be seen for extrovert spaces through the second and third floor of the proposal.

The view above shows the parametric columns featuring through the atrium spaces within the proposal, replicting tree trunks, the concept of biophilia is present yet again. Views from the 1st and foirth floor being used as extrovert spaces can be seen, allowing the terraces to be used as viewing platforms to encourage productivity when in active collaborative zones.

Environmental Strategy The environmental strategy that has been used on this proposal is seen on the left. An in depth proposal of how the parametric columns will produce gray water from rain water harvesting minimising the eco footprint. Suggested tank sizes has also been calculated. Cooling and heating systems has also been implemented for both the summer and winter seasons ensuring heating and cooling is always present within the building with natural ventilation featuring within. Solar glass has also been implemented within the second facade of the proposal featuring in a black colour which through research proved to be the most efficient in capturing solar energy.
