Baltic Photography School, Liverpool United Kingdom

Project Concept One thing I noticed about the needs of a photography school was that they had a lot of spaces that need natural light and some that would only be possible with artificial light, for example, a green screen room can only work with a high amount of light. So I decided to come up with the concept of separating the spaces into light and shadow. Light would represent all the spaces that need natural light and shadow would represent the spaces needing artificial light. My concept of light and shadow influenced my buildings overall shape. The “light” part of the building is a cube to representing light travelling in straight lines. The reason I picked a cube is that I did not want a shape with too many angles; also, I wanted all the lines to be the same length which is why a rectangle did not work. For the shadow part of the building, I am going to use the actual shadows produced from the light part of the building “the cube”. I made the shadow space only 6 metres high so it would not overshadow the buildings to the right, which were the same height.

The green roof will provide a lot of benefits to the building and its environment. The environmental benefits it will provide, a rainwater buffer were the water will evaporate through the plants. This will decrease the amount of water circulating within the drainage systems and reduce the risk of flooding. The green roof will also help purify the air because the plants will absorb the co2, converting it in into oxygen. Plants absorb 50% of the sun rays and 30% is reflected, this helps to create a more comfortable climate. Therefore, the indoor climate of the building will not need as much air conditioning due to the roof temperature being reduced. The green roof also protects the roofing materials from all the elements, which doubles, and in some circumstances triples the lifespan of the roof by a conside considerable amount. It will also increase the biodiversity in the area and be a place for birds, butterflies and insects to inhabit.

s n All Artifical lighfing will have led bulbs On top of the double-skin facade, there are dynamic panels. The facade can be changed dramatically. It can be adjusted to different climate conditions. The facade has no time restrictions and can be changed hourly, daily and on a seasonal basis. This will help to control the conditions of the building to meet the occupant's comfort and wellbeing all year round. The panels can be adjusted to the occupant's needs. This will enhance the photography studio experience because th can adjust their lighting conditions until they get the perfect they lighting for there image.

On the south side of my building, there is a double-skin facade. The facade adapts to cold and warm weather. It provides natural ventilation and solar gains. Also, the facade helps reduce the amount of energy used for cooling and heating the building. In the winter months, the solar rays preheat the cavity reducing the heat demand. In the mo summer months, it protects the building from direct solar gains and provides ventilation because the second skin has openable windows

Concept The concept for this building was inspired by the nautilus shell. I intended to create a space the progressively decreased mimicking the structure of the nautilus shell. The building will be used as an office space that would allow small companies to grow into there larger spaces. This gives the illusion that the companies were growing from chamber to chamber in the same way a nautilus grows.
