I am currently working towards my bachelor’s degree in architecture, studying in Liverpool John Moore’s University, School of Art and Design. My name is Alex Roberts and I am from North Wales. I chose to study this course as I have a passion for design and want to leave my mark on the world with buildings that represent me. This is a selection of my work that best represents my creativity.

Comprehensive Design Project (6123ARC)
in an attempt to boost student’s mental and physical well-being, as well as their cognitive performance, I decided to focus my focus for the Birkenhead School of Art around biophilia.

To incorporare biophilia into the design I have used courtyards as a means of introducing natural elements such as vegetation and wildlife, as well as bringing in natural light to the internal spaces. on the interior of the building, timber has been used to clad the circulation spaces as it connects occupants with the natural world through an organic material as well as having cognitive benefits of reducing brain activity to provide relaxation and regeneration.

Weather or Not (6121ARC)
In this module, we were given the task of designing a weather station in the Lake Dsitrict. My design incorporated a library with an auidtorium/raeding space, gallery and a cafe.

The concept behing the building was to show the different elements of the weather through the building. Light was was experienced through the various forms of glazing to make spaces full of natural light. Wind was experienced in the courtyard area where slatted timber fening was positioned around the space, allowing wind through whilst still providing a sense of enclosure. An exposed ramp was placed in the centre of the building for the occupants to experience rain. through the glazing around the ramp, users would see rain fall and be collected.

As the concept for this building was based around the weather, I decided to use passive methods to run this building. Heating and cooling were provided the buiding through solar heat gains with the support of a ground source heat pump, using natural cross ventilation to replenish the air within the building, as well as using large floor to ceiling windows to make the most of natural daylight to illuminate the building.

Following the natural nature of the builidng, I opted for a natural approach to the structure of my building. A glulam frame structure was the most suitable for this project as it follows the concept and is an enviornmentally friendly solution for the building’s structure

To reflect the transition between solid wood and engineered timber, a laminated veneer lumber diagrid will be used to provide the structure of the workshop. The diagrid creates an open 400m2 space supported by columns around the perimeter of the workshop. This diagrid is visible from the shop which uses a traditional timber frame. Timber fins will be used on the North facade of the workshop, facing onto seel street, to give glimpses into the workshop whilst to glorify the view from inside the shop. The timber fins also allow in extra natural light to the workshop.

Urban Design - Group Stratergy For this project we were instructed to come up with a new urban design for a part of the Fabric District in Liverpool. Our design was based around creating a multifunctional series of spaces. In our design there were four key spaces based around ecology, community, sports and a landmark. All four spaces are connected by a singular path, hence the name, connections by a thread.

Urban Design Individual Project
The individual aspect of the Urban design project is a follow up from the group strategy. In this part of the project, we had to look closer at the details of the group strategy, being allowed to change different parts of the strategy if needed. My design for this part of the project consists of a multifunctional square that is used for socialising, live music/ performances, trade and whatever the people using the square desire.

Flexible Seating
The seating for this square is designed to replicate the patterns used for making suits and dresses, relating to the Fabric District. The seating can be placed in different arrangements, being flexible for different events happening within the square. The seating can be arranged for different groups of people, moved to allow space for temporary structures and positioned for different events. The seats are recessed at the bottom to allow for a more comfortable sitting position

Pods
Multifunctional pods are situated around the square and they can be used for both socialising and selling goods. The pods are made from polycarbonate plastic so that they allow light in. The pods have sliding doors so that they can be completely enclosed to create an indoor environment outside.
