Geometry, Code and Design

ERASMUS Intensive Programme 2012 - Summer School Kaiserslautern, Germany September 01 – 11, 2012 Structural Architectures – Geometry, Code and Design A Hermit’s Cabin In the Summer School structural thinking will be used as a method for designing architecture. Formulating rules on the basis of mathematical, geometric, physical, compositional and functional structures and their translations in spatial configurations and relationships between elements will be the starting point of a design project. The interaction of different disciplines in the structural approach will be the most important aspect of our IP. While the focus of the workshop had been the analysis and recognition of structures in the scale of a city in the first year of our Intensive Programme, we will focus now on a small architectural design object, developed according structures: a hermit’s cabin or minimal house for the Palatinate Forest. The cabin should be modular, foldable or decomposable, so that the structure is reversible and can be easily built up at other places. The principles should be simulated in the models in order to be packed in a box and sending them to the partner universities for exhibitions. With a focus on the model, the design project will berepresented in concept diagrams, various kind of drawings, sketches, and images.

Museums around Main Shore

Frankfurt am Main is one of the most important places for Museums in Germany and Europe. 15 museums are located along the Shore. Between the 80s and 90s they have been renovated and some have been built new. Some of the existing Villas were rebuilt by famous architects.

Städel

(detailled Information on page 10-11)

Museum of Communication The museum was the “Federal Post Museum” and was opened in 1958. Until 1994 it was owned by the Federal Ministry for Post and Telecommunication. In 1996 it has been redesigned by Architect Günter Behnisch. The architecture is transparent, made of glass and steel, which symbolizes the modernisation of the museum. Because of the new look, also the name has been changed into Museum of Communications.

DAM

(detailled Information on page 12-13)

German Museum of Film The permanent exhibition shows pieces of the history of film and instruments and steps of the film production. It was opened in 1984. The redesign of the Villa was done by Helbe Bofinger. Each year there are four special exhibitions, referring to single genres or social topics and there transportation with movies. There is also a small cinema, that shows short documentations. The villa is a listed building and has been rebuild from 2009 to 2011.

Museum of Applied Art

Schirn

Museum of Applied Art The Museum is built in the Park of Villa Metzler, that also belongs to the Museum. It shows exhibitons of Arts and Crafts. The building was designed by the english architect Richard Meyer in 1985. The proportions of the new building are similar to those of the neoclassicist villa. But it consists of three cubes, which are connected by paths of glass. The rooms are flooded by light and wide, which offers new views on the historical evidences.

Schirn The museum as a for Arts designed by the office BJSS ( Dietrich Bangert, Bernd Jansen, Stefan Jan Scholz und Axel Schultes) and was opened in 1983. The building consists of interlacing geometric figures of different shapes. The facade is made of light Sandstone. The Museum shows short exhibitions and projects of chosen topics or works of art. Unil nowadays there have been 150 Exhibitions. The exhibitions space is about 2000sqm.

Städel Museum Extension Architect: Schneider+Schumacher TIme: Opening: Februray 2012 History and Architecture: Since its foundation in 1815, the Städel Museum has expanded its holdings continally by pursuing an active acquisition policy. These activities have gone hand in hand with numerous expansions and modernizations of the museum’s facilities. This tradition is now being continued by the spectacular extension designed by the architectural firm schneider+schumacher (both have studied at TU Kaiserslautern) of Frankfurt, which in February 2008 was awarded first place in the competition advertised by the Städel for this purpose. An impressive hall located beneath the Städel garden creates 3,000 square meters of additional exhibition space for the presentation of contemporary art. The new gallery is illuminated with natural light through 195 skylights which creates a striking pattern on the garden’s lawn. In addition to this new construction measure, extensive repairs have been carried out in the old building.

DAM “Deutsches Architekturmuseum”

Architect: Oswald Matthias Ungers TIme: 1984 Building: A double house villa has been reused for the museum. After the core removal of the building, a construction of steel and concrete has been built, the so called house in house. In DAM is first and foremost not a functional museum but instead, for those that can “read” the structure, full of meaning and a programmatic building. It was a case of Ungers giving thoroughbred shape to his theory of transformational morphology in a manner that he would hardly ever duplicate. Which is why so many visitors, especially from abroad, come to Frankfurt every year, not only to see the exhibitions, but also to familiarize themselves with the building itself. The building is a house for architecture and about architecture.

Permanent Exhibition “From Primitive Hut to Skyscraper” The exhibition features twenty-five true-to-life models built on the basis of exact scientific findings - faithful copies which illustrate the development of human housing.

Latest Exhibition “ARCHITECTURAL MODEL - Tool, Fetish, Small Utopia”

The exhibition explores the use of architectural models in the 20th\21st century. It is the first attempt to systematically study the opportunities afforded by models in terms of experimenting, impressing the observer and producing small-scale artworks. The highlights are models by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Frei Otto, Rem Koolhaas, Peter Eisenman and Peter Zumthor.

Main Shore: Main Bridges and Important Buildings

Both sides of the Main River are attractive parts of Frankfurt. This is mainly because of the Museum-Shore and the bridges. Most important bridges are: the pedestrian bridge “Iron Path” (Eiserner Steg) from 1869 and the “Old Bridge” (Alte Brücke) from 1222. The “Old Bridge” crosses the last remaining Main-Island on which in 2006 a small Museum was built, named “Portikus”.

Portikus The New Portikus is a Museum built in 2006 and was designed by the architect Christoph Mäckler. It shows exhibitions of applied arts. The building’s architecture is simple, a long thin rectangle with a pointy gabled roof. The red facade references the red sandstone, typical for the region. Mäckler criticises with his building the neglect ion of promises of modern architecture. He builds a bridge between the historical buildings - the Main-Island and the Old Bridge.

Main Plaza The Main Plaza is a residential building, built by Hans Kolhoff in 2001. The skyscraper with a height of 88m has a curtain-type red brick facade and a golden roof. It contains 136 Apartments on 24 floors. People of Frankfurt call the building “Hohler Zahn” (hollow tooth) or “Termintenhügel” (termite hill).

“Portikus”

Westhafen Tower The Westhafen Tower is an office building built by schneider+schumacher in 2004. The skyscrapers shape is like a cylinder but the inner floorplan is squared. The room between inner and outer facade is used for 18 winter gardens. Important character is the structure of the facade with rhomb, built of triangle glass windows. A natural ventilation is possible when these are opened. The building reminds of a typical frankfurter glass for “Apfelwein” (applewine). Westhafen Tower

Main Forum

Main Forum The Main Forum is an office and a residential building, designed by the Gruber + KleineKraneburg in 2003. Helmut Kleine-Kraneburg is Professor for Building Construction at the TU Kaiserslautern. Theme of the design of the Main Forum is the human being as the main topic of the “IG-Metall” as a labour union. The huge area of the ground floor connects the building’s inner meeting places with the urban area of Frankfurt. The clear form, and the basic materials, metal and stone, show resistance and strength in the client’s sense.

RÖMER

Rebuilding the DomRömer area:

Old History:

The DomRömer area covers approximately 7.000 square metres. The area offers many attractions, for example the famous Römerberg plaza, the Dome, the Schirn Kunsthalle (art hall) and the Archaeological Garden. All these are excellent illustrations of the rich history of the area. Beside historical sites, picturesque corners and magnificent patrician houses, post-war and modern buildings dominate the urban landscape today.

The Römer is the old town hall and Market and was built in the 9th Century in Neo-Gothic style. Well-known is the “Three gabled facade”. It shows various emperors and the “Francofurtia” the female personification of the city. Inside on the ground floor is the main market hall and courtyards unchanged since 600 years. As the city of the German Football Federation after important football games the German football team comes to Frankfurt’s Römer to celebrate with the fans from the big balcony.

The redevelopment of the DomRömer area is a great asset and an opportunity for the city of Frankfurt. Frankfurt’s old city center will be reborn. In 2004 the city parliament of Frankfurt decided to initiate a competition among architectural offices within the framework of the proposed urban-planning redevelopment. The results of this first competition initiated an intense public discussion in Frankfurt. Because of this, in 2006 a planning-workshop was started. In this workshop urban planners, architects and many citizens developed a new concept, which was largely accepted by specialists and citizens at the end. The intense of this project is to restore the historic heart of the city around the DomRömer area. Frankfurt’s old city center will be rebuilt on the historical ground plan with his alleys, places and courtyards. The new-built houses are matching to the reconstructed ones and are providing a coherent ensemble. To gain this effect, there was a large architectural competition. The results of this competition enabled us to choose the best concepts for the “new” Frankfurt old town. The competition started in November 2010. More than 170 architects’ offices from across Europe took their chance to be a part of the project. A jury nominated the 56 best by their references. For up to 27 parcels the offices proposed round about 190 models / proposals / designs. At the end of march 2011, a jury nominated the best ones. The jury consisted of architects, politicians and members of the Frankfurt city council. There were 24 first, 12 second prices as well as 13 acknowledgements. The winners were able to connect tradition with modernity – an attribute that is typical for the upcoming residential area between dome and Römer. They followed the rules of the design statute that was enacted by the Frankfurt magistrate. The chosen proposals take reference to the historic buildings. They are recognizable as typical houses of Frankfurt at first sight. The ground floors for example are made of red sandstone. Typical design elements also were slate fronts and overhanging floors. Nevertheless it is clearly visible that these are buildings from the 21st century.

Pfälzer Wald - Palatine Forest

Biosphere Tower

The Palatinate Forest is a low-mountain region located in the Palatinate. The forest is a designated nature park, equivalent Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, covering 1,771 km² and its highest elevation is Mount Kalmit (673 m). Together with the northern part of the adjacent Vosges Mountains in France it forms the UNESCO Biosphere reserve Palatinate Forest-Vosges du Nord. The Biosphere reserve is one of the biggest forests in Europe. The low mountain range of the Palatinate Forest is continued northward by the extensive hilly landscape of the northern Palatinate, whose highest point is the volcanic Donnersberg (687 m). In the south it is continued by the northern Vosges Mountains in France. The eastern end of the forest is adjacent to the Palatinate wine growing region. Here the German Wine Route stretches through the undulating area that lies between the Palatinate Forest and the Upper Rhine valley. West of Kaiserslautern is the marshy lowland of Landstuhl.

Architect: KIRCHSPITZ: Peter Spitzley, Katrin Kern, Hubert Kirchmer, Michael Burghaus

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Please bring something to eat and drink with you for a picknick in the forest!

Towers Location 20

Time: August, 2011 Architecture: The tower is built for the biological department of the university kaiserslautern to observe treetops. The size of the squared floorplan is just 3x3 meters. Reason is, that the processes in the forest should not be disturbed. The design is simple and also matter of construction. The tower has no lateral anchorings, that could disturb the trees. The tower has different floors, so that the research can be done on different hights. The material Kerto - veneer laminated wood is maximal ecologic. Different Kerto-Types, Kerto Q or Kerto S referring to the load of a part are glued laminated. For every situation of load, the perfect compact cross section has been calculated. The wood is not varnished, which would have influence on the biological atmosphere. Observing the change of the wood, makes the tower also a research project for architects.

History of the Park:

Architecture:

The shape of the building is a triangle with rounded down corners. The building’s idea is the never ending walk through the museum. It has the structure of the double helix of the DNA, that surrounds the foyer. The visitor gets to the top by an elevator. Two circuits start at the top and wind themselves down over 9 floors to the exit. Notable is the way how the engineers solved the carrying. The 33m wide rooms, have to carry a load from about 10 trucks without any columns which is possible with the socalled“twists”. These carrying elements are doublecurved. The bands of windows are made of glass in triangle shape, of which none is similar to the other. On the way through the museum the visitor experiences a journey through time of the 120 year old history of automobiles.

The 50 hectare big Park is in the north of Stuttgart and was created as “Reichsgartenschau” in 1939. 1941-42 it was place to assemble Jews to be brought to concentration camps. In remember of the bale, there is a monument of stone. One of several garden shows had been in 1950. In this year Rolf Gutbrod designed the famous “Milchbar at the Flamingo Lake”. A building in modern style (glass and steel).

The tower is located on the highest point of the park. It is 42m high and has a filigree construction consisting of 43 networked ropes. The shape is also like the DNA double helix. On one way the visitor can go up, on the other way down. There are four platforms in the middle of the ways, which are tightened on a hanging net of ropes. The net is tightened at a bowl on the top of the middle pylon.

About the Museum: It is a Museum of History of Architecture in the two buildings of the double house. One contains the museum and shows exhibits that inform about the history of the colony. The colony should show how modern cities could look like in the future. Buildings should not be representative but functional objects, cubic without any decoration. Flexible floor plans, the focus on colour and light are important, which is shown by the wall paintings. The other House is an accessible exhibit itself. It has been preserved and restored in the exact look of the time of building. Even the inner Architecture with the fitting cabinets are restored. With the opening of the museum, it’s the first time today that a building of the colony is assessable again, all the other buildings serve as residential buildings.

Weissenhofsiedlung vs. Kochenhofsiedlung

New City Library

Leading Architect of Weissenhofsiedlung: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Time: 1927 History and Architecture:

Architect: Eun Young Yi (Korea)

The Weissenhofsiedlung is one of the most significant landmarks left by the movement known as “Neues Bauen” and was erected as a residential building exhibition. Seventeen architects, today amongst the most notable masters of modern architecture, like Le Corbusier, Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, Scharoun and others, created an exemplary residential scheme for modern urban residents. The style of buildings is strict and simple with flat roofs and new materials like concrete steel and glass, which was an experiment in every case to that time. The design was not likely to be seen in the time of World War II. The area was named “Araber Village” and was close to be destroied by NS Regime. The beginning of war prevented this. The “Kochenhofsiedlung” was built in the direct neighbourhood as an opposed design in traditional style.

Leading Architect of Kochenhofsiedlung: Paul Schmitthenner Time: 1933 History and Architecture:

TUE September 4th, 2012

Time: October 2011 Architecture: The site for the Stuttgart City Library was chosen in Mailänder Platz, an area that is perceived to be a future city centre growing out. The building takes the form of cube with an edge length of 45 meters. It is constructed out of pale grey fair-faced concrete that visually frames an array of 9 x 9 frosted glass bricks. The shell is designed as a double facade that includes the glass brick level and an inner facade as the thermal building shell. The gallery hall is a five-story space, square-shaped and surrounded by a shell of books. The interior circulation is arranged in a spiral among the reading gallery areas, designed to be flowing promenades flooded with light from the glass roof. The forum is an event room which is in proximity to the light-railway line that crosses the first and second basement floors.

The Kochenhofsiedlung was planned to be a the sign of the National Socialist Government. The order was given to create a residential area in traditional style with regional Material. The shape of the buildings is simple with rectangular plans and gabled roofs. The material is wood in regional timber construction. The design is the complete opposite of the design of Weissenhofsiedlung. The “Model Colony” was mostly planned by students of the University of Stuttgart for example Paul Bonatz in the style of “Stuttgarter Schule”. Opponents of the traditional architecture called the area “Timber Worm Colony” which is usual until today, even a restaurant close is named “Timber Worm”.

Time: symbolic start: Feb. 2010

Building Time of Schlossplatz: Castle was built 1746-1807/castle square redesign in 1977 Time of Art Museum: 2005 Architect: Hascher and Jehle

Architecture:

History and Architecture of Art Museum:

The old Main station design consists of cubes in different sizes. It is made of concrete and steel and encased with shell limestone. It is integrated in the city and it typifies monumentality in a conservative way, it shows the style of the “Stuttgarter Schule”. The station is a so called “Kopfbahnhof” (dead-end station) which causes longer time to shunt the trains than in a through station. There have been discussions for more than 100 years, what to do to make it fit to the fast time nowadays. Star architect Christoph Ingenhofen won the competition with his idea to built the whole station under the earth and change it to a through station. On the area over the station will be only seen 23 domes of glass which bring light and air to the lower station. The area could later also be used to built the philharmonic of castles’ garden. The costs of the project are rising more and more and parts of the historic station will be destroyed wherefore have been protests over and over, against the project. The building process had often been stopped, a long time it was not sure if the plans of Ingenhofen will be realized.

The castle square is the biggest square in the centre of Stuttgart, it divides the 1,2km long main pedestrian area into upper and lower “Königsstraße”. The square consists of a baroque garden with fountain and a music pavilion. In the centre is the 30m high column with the figure of Concordia from 1841. The square is fore court of the Stuttgart New Castle that has been built as a residential castle for the kings and dukes of Württemberg. On the opposite of the castle is the “Kings Building”. Next to the building has been the crown price palace, which has been destroyed in the World War II. On the ruins there has been built the small castle square and a huge outside staircase in 1969. On this square now is located the Art Museum. The Art Museum is a nearly completely transparent cube of glass, contrasting to the massive inner block of Solenhofer Jura-chalk stone. The cube of stone offers silence and concentration on the art. At day the glass cube with the filigree steel construction cover the stone cube, at night the stone cube lights in its natural color and makes the glass nearly invisible.

Because of topographical matter, the building can be entered on different sides. The public part is located in the flat part of the building, the administration in the vertical building in 20 floors. The city hall of Kaiserslautern is until today a landmark in the city, because it is largely insight. It belongs to one of the first typical buildings for city halls, of its time in Germany. With a similar design Roland Ostertag won a competition for the city hall in Mannheim. On the 21st floor, the last floor of the building, in a height of 84m there is the bar “21 lounge”. It has a huge roof terrace, that offers a great view over the whole city of Kaiserslautern.
