The Tiny House Village model for providing safe access to vulnerable homeless people is a model that Seattle’s Low-Income Housing Institute developed. As an Intern and Project Coordinator for LIHI, I worked on a diverse range of projects using and leveraging my architectural background to gain experience with the villages. In so doing I learned more first-hand what the struggles homeless individuals face, from high-level political and policy

-Lots of grocery stores in the area, maybe not as accessible by bus?

**Circle of Friends is awesome! **It seems like there are a lot of resources in the proximity of this site
**There are a lot of churches within walking distance-- none of them seemed to have their own food bank but they were all involved with other organizations to address homelessness in some kind of way so they might be good neighbors/ advocates ** Again, busing seems complicated. Often times it seems like it would be easier to walk because the routes to nearby areas are not direct at all.
**there are other private clinics that are closer but might not be accessible to residents because of cost or insurance barriers **I worry that a lot of the food/health resources are a long ways away-**also near Seattle Central College! It residents might be deterred from the would be cool to see if residents site for this reason. could take classes here **near Shoreline community college

Worked with a team within the organization to create a report and feasibility study for 2 homeless encampments that are nearing the end of their original 2-year zoning agreements. Identified a short list of potential sites from all city surplus land. Worked with encampment stakeholders to select preferred sites. The site analysis criteria for the respective sites were determined after a number of meetings with various stakeholders including Seattle Po-
UW - Urban Planning
lice, Share & Nickelsville, encampment residents. Efforts were then taken to create map documents to communicate site & neighborhood conditions at the potential sites. The report was consolidated into a presentation which was given to the City of Seattle Human Services Devision. After the stakeholders identified prefered sites, our organization lobbied the city to procure these sites for the agreed upcoming moves.

There are many surplus lots from public agencies that could be available for potential use from the city. With current configurations and requirements, villages often require a base of 12,000 sft., rendering many usable lots unfeasible. A LIHI co-worker and I developed a proposal to change encampment requirements and create a new model of transitional housing within the Tiny House program.

Low Income Housing Institute Licton Springs Ramp Accessibility The homes are small enough to not require permitting and therefore are modest structures. Encampment hygiene facilities reside in a separate building that requires a minimal degree of permitting. In order to meet city-based permitting requirements, the hygiene facility had to have an accessibility ramp the hygiene buildings are required to have ramps, turning radius minimums, and grab bars in order to be compliant. Licton Springs is not the first encamp-
ment to have a ramp to its hygiene facility, but by serving a low-barrier encampment with tremendously vulnerable residents, the accessibility need was greater. In order to secure the permit for the already constructed shower facility of the operating camp, a simple design was chosen, and the surround community was tapped to find donated labor (supported by a local carpentry program). The permit was granted so the residnets
could have access to critical hygiene services. The ramp meets all ADA accessibility standards and is used frequently by residents. Local Labor Union Pre-Apprentiship programs & education programs (Sawhorse Revolution, Tulalip Tribes, Wood Tech, Renton Tech, Church Communities)

Low Income Housing Institute James Rouse Day of Service Build
Much of the building for the Tiny House Villages takes place offsite by partner organizations. One such planned build that I coordinated and executed was the Enterprise Day of Service with Seattle Vocational Institute & Enterprise Community Partners. Partnering with other organizations to provide variable labor, materials, tools, and donations for the encampments also serves to engage other community-based partnerships. In organiz-
10
ing this volunteer event for various organizations to give back to their communities, volunteers were able to take action against local problems in their backyards. At the build, we employed new streamlined construction processes and project management to enable a radically more efficient build. An unprecedented 8 Houses were constructed by 8 different volunteer groups in a single day as part of the annual James Rouse Day of Service.
The simplified building design and construction process has enabled relatively un-skilled individuals to be able to quickly assemble Tiny Houses. This development is going to help LIHI ramp up Tiny House building production to increase the supply of emergency shelter as the housing affordability crisis grows.
