Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

WHERE TO BET There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs. The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection. Mimimum Stakes The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

RACE SUMMARY

NOYA left her debut form well behind to get off the mark at Kempton last month, and with her pedigree pointing towards further improvement, she’s taken to defy a penalty. Clitheroe was disappointing when last seen but sets a clear standard on her earlier form. Rattling hasn’t been seen since making a promising debut a year ago but should still improve and isn’t ruled out. 1-2-3: 1.NOYA 2.CLITHEROE 3.RATTLING KEY colours

RACE SUMMARY

HMS PRESIDENT knocked firmly on the door in similar company from higher marks last term and with a reappearance spin under his belt, he could well be worth chancing to put it all together back down in trip. Screaming Petrus and Duke of Verona are a pair of low-mileage 4-y-os who can rate higher still on turf this year and are feared, along with Flyin’ Solo. 1-2-3: 1.HMS PRESIDENT (IRE) 2.SCREAMING PETRUS 3.DUKE OF VERONA (IRE) KEY colours

The stable runs UNITED NATIONS today. LONGEST TRAVELLER: UNITED NATIONS trained by A O’Brien, Ireland. RACE SUMMARY

WALK OF STARS looked far from the finished article when making a winning return at Newbury so Charlie Appleby’s imposing Dubawi colt can take this step up in class in his stride. United Nations also has better days ahead of him and is feared most with this step up in trip a big plus for Aidan O’Brien’s Galileo colt. Lionel and Natural World both bring a fair bit of potential too in a most intriguing contest.

ASCOT 3.30 ONE MILE, ROYAL HUNT CUP COURSE (8F) FOR THREE YRS OLD AND UPWARDS FILLIES AND MARES

THE BRITISH EBF FILLIES’ HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 2) Total race value £45000 x Owners Prize Money. 1st £18284, 2nd £9144, 3rd £4572, 4th £2286, 5th £1143, 6th £572. (Penalty Value £23193) SS

RACE SUMMARY

Quite a tight handicap in which it might be worth siding with the returning STRAWBERRI, whose lightly-raced profile provides her with the scope for better again at 4. Auria was a listed winner last season so makes some appeal back in a handicap from a mark in the high-90s. Rising Star saw off Serenading when the pair clashed at Newcastle in March and is also on the shortlist. 1-2-3: 1.STRAWBERRI 2.AURIA 3.RISING STAR KEY colours

RACE SUMMARY

There are good grounds for siding with FRESH, who has already shown his liking for big-field handicaps over this straight track and arrives on a handy mark too following a promising reappearance second at Kempton. Vafortino caught the eye on his debut for Kevin Philippart de Foy when runner-up at Newcastle and this dual ex-Irish 7f scorer is next on the list, although Magical Morning, One Ruler, Oo de Lally and Dark Shift all need factoring in too in a typically ultra-competitive Victoria Cup.
