Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital

It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

Selected to win the race.

Good chance of being placed

By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance

OFFICI A L BH A R ATINGS E X PL AINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

SIMON (SANDMAN) MAPLETOFT’S TOP TIPS

BETUK HEVER SPRINT STAKES PREVIEW (2.40pm)

IRISH RAIDER VALIANT AN IRRESISTIBLE FORCE

Irish raider VALIANT FORCE can confirm the promise of two wins at Dundalk by taking the Listed BetUK Hever Sprint Stakes (2.40) for owners Amo Racing and trainer Adrian Murray.

A Norfolk Stakes winner as a two-year-old, and a close second to Big Evs in the Breeders’ Cup, Valiant Force can deny All-Weather specialist Diligent Harry a follow up win in the five-furlong dash.

He couldn’t cope with the revitalised Marshman in the Listed Kachy Stakes at Lingfield Park on his re-appearance and may again find Karl Burke’s five-year-old too strong. The drop back to a fast five furlongs is more on a concern than the 3lb penalty he concedes, however.

BETUK WINTER DERBY PREVIEW (3.15PM)

CHAMPAGNE CAN BE TOAST OF SOUTHWELL

CHAMPAGNE PRINCE maintained his relentless progress with an emphatic success in last month’s trial and can take his form to a new level by winning the 27th running of the Group 3 BetUK Winter Derby Stakes (3.15).

Jane Chapple-Hyam’s strong-travelling grey demonstrated an impressive turn of foot as well as proven stamina to supplement his win in the Listed Wild Flower Stakes at Kempton Park in December

He can bridge the ratings gap to get the better of Karl Burke’s Royal Champion, who made a winning All-Weather debut in the Listed Quebec Stakes at Lingfield Park on New Year’s Eve. The seven-year-old was Group placed on turf in his prime but may prove vulnerable to a younger, more progressive rival on this step up in trip.

John and Thady Gosden are bidding to take the trophy back to Clarehaven Stables for the fifth time with leading contender Military Academy, a lightly raced four-year-old who impressed by winning the Listed Floodlit Stakes at Kempton in November in a fast time.

Gelded since and fitted with cheekpieces for the first time, he shouldn’t be troubled by the drop back to 11 furlongs while Richard Hannon’s chestnut Persica will need to be at his best on his return from a four-month break after winning in Listed company at Ayr and then finding life too hot in the Champion Stakes at Ascot.

PRESTIGIOUS WINTER DERBY RETURNS TO SOUTHWELL

The most prestigious race of the All-Weather Championships, the £100,000 BetUK Winter Derby, will be staged at Southwell this afternoon for the second time.

The inaugural running of the Group 3 showpiece on our Tapeta track was won 12 months ago by Charlie Appleby’s Godolphin-owned Military Order. Rated 109, he edged out favourite and previous year’s winner Lord North under jockey Danny Tudhope to score by a length

Run over an extra furlong since switching from Lingfield Park, the one mile, three-furlong Winter Derby has been won by some classy horses since Philip Mitchell’s Running Stag took the first ever running under top jockey Ray Cochrane in 1998

Until moving to Southwell, the middle-distance showpiece had been staged at Lingfield Park but was still a conditions race when the son of Cozzene beat Refuse To Lose en route to a successful career in The States, where he took his career earnings past £1 million.

The following year the race was awarded Listed status when Peter Harris’s Supreme Sound obliged for Gary Bardwell, while Frankie Dettori, who has become the winning most jockey, took back-to-back renewals in 2003 and 2004 on David Loder’s Parasol and fellow Italian Luigi Camici’s Caluki

Jamie Spencer became the first winner of the Winter Derby as a Group 3 when he scored on Sylvester Kirk’s Sri Diamond in 2006 before the race began to attract even higher quality performers. Indeed, in 2010 Tranquil Tiger made history when he became the highest rated winner of the race at that stage off 112. The son of Selkirk justified favouritism under Tom Queally to give the late Sir Henry Cecil his only success in it.

In 2014, the Winter Derby became the jewel in the crown of the inaugural All-Weather Championships as Robin Hood’s Bay gave owner Alan Pickering, trainer Ed Vaughan and a young Luke Morris the glory

Godolphin claimed their first victory in the race in 2015 when Adam Kirby scored on Tryster for Charlie Appleby before following up a year later on Marco Botti’s popular Middle-Distance star Grendisar.

John Gosden is the most successful trainer in its history. He’s won the race four times in the last six years with Wissahickon, Dubai Warrior, Forest Of Dean and last year’s runner-up Lord North Two of those successes were executed by Dettori but it was stable stalwart Robert Havlin who masterminded Lord North’s success in 2023 off a record-high mark of 118.

The Winter Derby will again be complemented by the Listed Hever Sprint Stakes, which also switched from Lingfield last year The five-furlong dash was won by the Clive Cox-trained Diligent Harry, who had previously taken the Listed Kachy Stakes at Lingfield

Jockey Neil Callan is the winning most rider with three successes, the latest on dual winner Arganil in 2010, while Hollie Doyle has twice been successful on Gorgeous Noora in 2019 and One Night Stand three years later.

SECOND WINTER DERBY TRIUMPH

Charlie Appleby recorded his second Winter Derby and his first since 2015 with Military Order winning by a length ahead of market favourite Lord North.

The four-year-old was pushed along to lead when a furlong out and he kept on well to fend off the danger from the John & Thady Gosdentrained gelding.

The Gosden pair were aiming to make it five wins from seven attempts in this contest but it was the son of Frankel who stole the show Lord North had the early lead and continued to stay on well but it wasn’t enough to take the honours.

Tyrrhenian Sea finished third for jockey Jack Mitchell and trainer Roger Varian. 10⁄12

ROYAL CHAMPION is already a triple winner of listed events and the level he’s capable of is good enough to win in Group company. Following a pretty routine win for his new yard back in Britain in December he’s very much the one to beat, though lightly-raced improver Military Academy looks every inch the type to make up into a better 4-y-o. GLEN BUCK has presumably had his share of problems but he’s looked talented each time he’s made it to the track and a 6lb rise for readily seeing off a next-time-out scorer here last month looks lenient, He makes plenty of appeal, with Path To Dubai and Tides of War perhaps the pick of the opposition.
