FRIDAY 18 APRIL
13:35
This looks to be a match between the Irish Challenger Drusilla and topweight Surrey Belle Preference is given to Drusilla who won going away in heavy going at Punchestown last time, the trip will be no problem. Surrey Belle looks to be up against stiffer opposition here, having been odds-on her last two runs.
14:10
A very competitive Handicap that will be a war of attrition over an extended 4 miles in soft conditions. Against the field we can make good each-way chances with Virgin bet extra places – Your Own Story, Anglers Crag and Passing Well. Preference is for the locally trained Anglers Crag who looks laid out for this race and at 7/1 has a very good chance, has handled the course before, and distance and going will not be an issue
14:45
Not much solid form on offer here, He’s Bresilian stands out on the ratings having ran well on his hurdling debut, making up good late ground to finish a respectable third to a Willie Mullins favourite, last month at Wetherby. The two other likely contenders Cahier’s Den & Young Getaway will surely be seen to better advantage once competing in low grade handicaps.
15:20
This looks to be a competitive handicap; the top six runners all look to be in with a good chance. Jetoile from the shrewd Ryan Potter yard should always be noted in the market and could show improved form now dropping down in class, the same applies to Kansas City Star Preference here is given to the topweight Praire Wolf who looks to bounce back from a poor Kelso run, he will appreciate the longer trip and there are no ground concerns.
15:55
Another competitive handicap and we make a case each-way for both Bareback Jack and It’s All About You. Our pick is the Jennie Candlish-trained It’s All About You making the journey up from Staffordshire. This is an improving horse, running well this season with two wins in December and January, we feel the handicapper has been very kind with a mark of 119, currently around a 9/2 chance.
16:30
The Irish-trained and top weight Step Out is an Interesting runner making the journey over from County Antrim. The likely favourite currently around 7/4, this looks a good opportunity to record his first win of 2025. The Micky Hammond trained Coup De Coeur is likely to prove the danger
17:05
A tricky conditional Jockey’s Handicap Hurdle to end the day with lots of chances. Against the field we make good each-way chances with Virgin bet extra places – Chillhi and Skiddaw. Preference is for the Scottish-trained Skiddaw who is very lightly raced and comes into the race after only 4 runs in 2024 The race is likely to suit, and the 3-pound claiming jockey Bruce Lynn knows the horse having ridden the 7yo gelding on his last two runs in November 2024, currently around 10/1 this selection looks a value each-way bet with the extra places as we expect him to be thereabouts at the finish.

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

The pick of several compelling candidates is ILIKEDWAYURTHINKIN, who looks tailor-made for this test judged on his impressive display over 3 3/4m here on his penultimate start. He jumps/travels well and remains on a plausible mark. Choosethenews bounced back from a poor run at Carlisle when runner-up here last time and he will be a threat if his stamina passes the test, while the likes of Collectors Item, Egbert, Gaboriot and O’Connell all command respect.
