Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

WHERE TO BET There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs. The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection. Mimimum Stakes The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: TOO SHY SHY trained by J Flint, Bridgend, 185 miles. RACE SUMMARY

TOO SHY SHY hasn’t got her head in front for a while, but she’s dipped to an attractive mark as a consequence and there were signs at Wolverhampton last time that her turn may be near. She is taken to confirm that impression here, with Tawtheef nominated as the main danger ahead of London. A 4lb rise for his Brighton success may be enough to anchor Bbob Alula and while Uther Pendragon has been knocking on the door of late, it’s hard to ignore the fact that he’s 0-23 on the all-weather.

BAILEYS LIBERTY appeared to get back on track when third on the all-weather course here recently and she could be the answer if able to build on that now returned to turf. Major Gatsby needs to be taken seriously having won three of his last four starts, but he has yet to shine on grass and bigger threats may be posed by Renegade Rose, who shaped well on her recent reappearance, and handicap debutant Fulfilled.

This looks decidedly trappy but AJRAD at least arrives having run with credit on 2 of his last 3 starts at this venue, latterly in a stronger contest, and he could be worth chancing to come out on top.
