Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

WHERE TO BET There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs. The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection. Mimimum Stakes The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

TIMEFORM VIEW Saw off Adayar in the Lingfield Derby Trial (soft) last spring. The remainder of his 3-y-o campaign was a touch underwhelming but he was back to form with a bang when 5-length winner of Goodwood Listed last month. PLAY SMARTER

Lack of match practice is perhaps a slight concern but last year’s triple Group 1 winner HURRICANE LANE is potentially a cut above this opposition and he can get his 4-y-o campaign off to a perfect start. Broome can leave his reappearance run behind and the fill the runner-up spot in this for the second year in succession. Mostahdaf may prove best of the remainder.

PLAY SMARTER

HOME AFFAIRS edged out Tuesday’s emphatic King’s Stand winner and stablemate Nature Strip for his second Group 1 victory in his homeland earlier this year and ran well from a poor position in a handicap next time. A big performance is surely on the way and he can complete a double for Australia. Minzaal should have come on plenty for his York return and is set to go well in first-time cheekpieces. Glen Shiel has a tremendous record over C&D and should be on the premises again.

PLAY SMARTER

Marco Botti’s SILVER SAMURAI has proved a revelation since dropped back to 6f and is fancied to complete a quick hat-trick under a 5lb penalty after showing an excellent turn of foot to score at Haydock and Newbury. Fresh came home runner-up in this event 12 months ago and seems sure to have another big say on the back of his good Victoria Cup fourth here. Blackrod, Summerghand and Bielsa are all firmly in the picture too in what promises to be a typically competitive Wokingham.

PLAY SMARTER

A smashing 3-y-o handicap and it may pay to side with John & Thady Gosden’s HONITON. He was an easy winner of a Sandown maiden 7 days ago, and previous form in maiden/novice company is working out very well, so there’s plenty to like now his sights are set on handicaps from a handy draw. Falling Shadow and Missed The Cut are similarly upwardly mobile and feared along with Aldous Huxley.

Those with previous form don’t set a tall standard and it may pay to side with a newcomer in the shape of VENETIAN. He makes appeal on paper for a yard adept at readying its juveniles and could be the way to go. Fellow-newcomer Star Player is also worth a look, whilst Dresden Green should have derived plenty from his debut effort and can also figure for his powerful stable.

PLAY SMARTER

FALCON EIGHT disappointed in this race 12 months ago but had a clear excuse given the ground and, having shaped well from an unpromising position in the Chester Cup last time (form franked earlier this week), he could be the way to go. Wordsworth boasts smart form too and is an interesting contender on his first try at an extreme distance. Trueshan sets the standard but it bears repeating he’s still be to tried on ground firmer than good.

The form of PARTY ISLAND’s C&D second last month reads pretty well in the context of this race and he is taken to go one better off the same mark. Forge Valley Lad doesn’t look overly burdened having been raised just 3lb for his cosy success here a fortnight ago and he is feared, while Irish import Gold Wing will also be a threat if coping with this step up in trip. Tralee Hills is another to consider in a competitive handicap. 1-2-3: 1.PARTY ISLAND (IRE) 2.FORGE VALLEY LAD 3.GOLD WING KEY colours
