Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

WHERE TO BET There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs. The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection. Mimimum Stakes The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): A Watson (75 wins from 386 runners, 19%) runs BARGING THRU. TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): E Dunlop (5 wins from 29 runners, 17%) runs BLUE FLAME. LONGEST TRAVELLER: DAYMAN trained by D Loughnane, Tern Hill, 195 miles. RACE SUMMARY

LEAP ABROAD has developed an excellent partnership with Mohammed Tabti in the saddle, with the pair winning 3 of their last 6 starts together and finishing runner-up on the other 3 occasions. Their latest success came at Newmarket on Thursday and a penalty may not prevent the hat-trick if turned out again quickly. Last-time-out winner Barging Thru could be the main danger, ahead of Brunel Charm.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: TURN BACK TIME trained by C & M Johnston, Middleham, 270 miles. RACE SUMMARY

POWER GENERATION was badly hampered at Brighton last time having been well backed but he can gain compensation this time around with his yard in good form. He has dropped to a workable mark based on the pick of his 2-y-o form, so he is taken to get the better of Power On who can go well again back on the all-weather. Patontheback completes the shortlist having his first start since a wind op.

RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): R Hughes (45 wins from 306 runners, 15%) runs INCOME. TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): D O’Meara (7 wins from 71 runners, 10%) runs COOLMEEN ROYAL. LONGEST TRAVELLER: COOLMEEN ROYAL trained by D O’Meara, Upper Helmsley, 259 miles. RACE SUMMARY

INCOME produced a career-best effort when winning at Newmarket last time and she can go on to follow up. The 3-y-o began the year in good form on the all-weather, successful over 6f here in January, so she could be able to build on her latest run returned to the polytrack. A pair of C&D winners can give the selection most to think about, with Nordic Glory preferred ahead of Mick’s Spirit. 1-2-3: 1.INCOME (IRE) 2.NORDIC GLORY (IRE) 3.MICK’S SPIRIT KEY colours
