Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

WHERE TO BET There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs. The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection. Mimimum Stakes The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

RACE SUMMARY COCONUT BAY appears to have been brought along with handicaps in mind and, now pitched into one off a lowly opening mark, she makes plenty of appeal. If the market speaks in her favour, all the better. Greg The Great will be a big threat if able to reproduce his recent turf form back on this surface, while Asense is another to seriously consider. 1-2-3: 1.COCONUT BAY 2.GREG THE GREAT 3.ASENSE KEY colours

RACE SUMMARY AGAINST THE ODDS went very close to snapping a long losing run on his second outing following a lengthy absence atWolverhampton recently. He looks the way to go in a race lacking strength in depth. Mohassana is on an appealing mark based on what she showed in maiden/novice company, but the 4-y-o finds herself with a bit to prove following a couple of low-key performances. Conversely, Global Style arrives here in good heart and he is second choice. 1-2-3: 1.AGAINST THE ODDS 2.GLOBAL STYLE (IRE) 3.MOHASSANA (USA) KEY colours

RACE SUMMARY

ROYAL MARINER looks the type to improve for a switch to nurseries with a first-time visor on, so he’s preferred to Rock Girl, who showed modest form twice prior to a lesser showing at Leicester 51 days ago. Padre Daniele has been shaping like there’s a bigger effort in him, so he’s also one to note. 1-2-3: 1.ROYAL MARINER (IRE) 2.ROCK GIRL (IRE) 3.PADRE DANIELE KEY

CONSENSUS DE VEGA arrives on the back of a solid showing at Yarmouth and gets the marginal vote to take this tricky fillies’ maiden. Minwah has the best form and, while it was achieved for a different stable in another country, she’s still an obvious danger, while another improved showing from Citrus Grove would put her right in the mix. 1-2-3: 1.CONSENSUS DE VEGA (IRE) 2.MINWAH (USA) 3.CITRUS GROVE (IRE) KEY colours
