Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
WHERE TO BET There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs. The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection. Mimimum Stakes The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

RACE SUMMARY ADELISA was well backed and justified the support to make her first start for Kevin Philippart de Foy a winning one at Kempton (1m) 2 weeks ago. 6lb higher now, she could well be up to following up. Habanero Star, who is 3-5 this year, rates an obvious danger, ahead of Masqool. Not a strong nursery so it’s perhaps a good opportunity for CLEAR TO LAND to go one better having displayed much-improved form when second to a well-handicapped rival on nursery debut at Beverley a week ago. LONGEST TRAVELLER: COME ON GIRL trained by M Appleby, Oakham, 142 miles. RACE SUMMARY ISCHIA left her 2-y-o form well behind when going close in a first-time hood (retained here) at Windsor last month and, with the prospect of better to come now handicapping, she will prove a tough nut to crack if taking to this surface. Mumcat’s latest effort at Brighton was lacking, but she’s usually reliable and will be a danger to all if she puts her best foot forward. Our Louise made a positive start for this yard over C&D last week and another bold show could be forthcoming. 1-2-3: 1.ISCHIA 2.MUMCAT 3.OUR LOUISE (IRE) KEY colours
