Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

WHERE TO BET There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs. The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection. Mimimum Stakes The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

WANNABE BETSY appeared to score with a bit left up her sleeve over this C&D last month and, with just five runs under her belt and on just her second start for this yard, there could be even better to come. She gets the nod ahead of the in-form Shut Up And Dance, who is greatly respected despite being hit with an 8lb rise for her recent Wolverhampton success. Arcadian Friend looks nailed-on to improve now faced with a stiffer test on his handicap debut, and he is best of the rest.

RACE SUMMARY

An intriguing handicap, despite the small field. MHAJIM only had one rival to beat when opening his account over C&D in February, but he’s probably capable of a good deal better than he’s shown to date and is likely to take plenty of stopping now pitched into a handicap off an attractive opening mark. Dream Harder is respected on the back of his solid effort at Nottingham, but bigger threats may be posed by the fillies Cappoquin and Neandra, both of whom are open to improvement. 1-2-3: 1.MHAJIM (IRE) 2.CAPPOQUIN (IRE) 3.NEANDRA (GER) KEY colours

RACE SUMMARY

CROWN LAND wouldn’t need to be out of the ordinary to make a winning debut and the hint should be taken if the market speaks in her favour. Rocking Ends sets the standard back at a more realistic level having contested the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot last month, but the form of the Salisbury race he landed isn’t up to much and, if Crown Land does turn out to be half-decent, he could struggle to concede 12lb to the George Boughey-trained newcomer. Mia Paradis is best of the rest.

COUNSEL has had a few chances now but he does bring some fairly useful form to the table and there should be no excuses for him here. It’s taken King of The Dance a bit of time to get back to the track after his debut third last September but he’s open to improvement on the back of that promising run and he looks the chief threat ahead of Flag of Truth.

RACE SUMMARY FAATTIK ticks plenty of the right boxes on paper and it will look significant if there’s confidence behind him in the betting. He is taken to make a winning start to his career, perhaps at the chief expense of Federal Street, who has shown plenty of ability in his two starts and will be a big threat if the first-time cheekpieces have the desired effect. MELODRAMATICA looks interesting now returning to the scene of her standout effort having left the impression a stronger gallop would have suited on her turf debut at Newmarket 4 weeks ago, so she’s put forward as the answer. Public Opinion wasn’t at her best at Wolverhampton last time but it’s far too soon to be writing her off, with recent course-winner Breach another to consider. 1-2-3: 1.MELODRAMATICA 2.PUBLIC OPINION 3.BREACH KEY colours
