Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL

RATINGS

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

WHERE TO BET

There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs

The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip Search around to get the best price for your selection.

Mimimum Stakes

The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt just ask.

The relative test of speed an AW bumper provides looked right up ZONISTY’s street when he was a taking winner here last month and a penalty may well not be enough to stop the follow up. Poor fare and the two chasing debutants, who both caught the eye last time, could be the ones to focus on, ALBERT VAN ORNUM getting the vote over Urabamba. He’s dropped plenty in the weights and has a race like this in him for Lingfield’s leading trainer. Urabamba should strip fitter for his Hereford return and could shine over fences Megalodon is another to note.

PEPE LE MOKO shaped encouragingly making an early switch to handicaps when sixth in a big field at Cheltenham, asked a big question given his lack of experience and emerging with potential intact, so he gets the nod in this lesser affair. Flat White has been in good form on the Flat this year and rates a big threat back over hurdles, while Light Em Up Nigel should be thereabouts again.

RACE SUMMARY

RAMORE WILL had more in hand than the final margin suggests when taking advantage of his reduced mark under this rider here 3 weeks ago so is taken to defy a 4lb rise EchoWatt has responded well to a tongue strap this season and was still going well when losing his rider here recently, so rates the main threat ahead of William Philo, who shaped well on his chase bow/return.
