Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

WHERE TO BET

There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs

The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip Search around to get the best price for your selection.

Mimimum Stakes

The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

Ready preference is for RANGE, who shaped like a ready-made future winner when going down narrowly on debut at Chepstow Kankin also found just one too good first time out at Market Rasen but that was more than 2 years ago, so his well-being has to be taken on trust. Consequently, Mullins Bay, who should be sharper following his introduction in October, and newcomer Princess Poppy may emerge as the main dangers 1-2-3:

RACE SUMMARY

MELK ABBEY was still in front when unseating Rex Dingle at the business end on her C&D chase debut and, granted a clear round this time, she may well be the answer It’s probably best to draw a line throughTazka’s reappearance effort and she is next on the list ahead of MrWashington, who will be a big threat off this reduced mark if finally reproducing something akin to his peak hurdles form in this sphere.

RACE SUMMARY

The vote goes to HOE JOLY SMOKE, who left the strong impression that he would pick up a race sooner rather than later when runner-up on his debut under Rules in a Chepstow maiden. The form of that race has been boosted since and this 4-y-o is open to improvement.Tea And Chats also made a promising start over hurdles and is feared most, though Technology is also accorded respect now switched to this sphere.
