Silent Wings Trail Adventure Offered at BNC in January The new year brings with it long dark nights, the coldest temperatures of the year, and owls beginning their breeding season. While most of us humans enjoy hunkering down over the winter away from the cold and wind, owls are covered from head to toe with warm insulating feathers, making January a great time to find a mate and begin the nesting process. Take a hike at Brukner Nature Center this month and search for three owl cutouts placed in the forest. Bring your smart phone to learn more about the owls and take a picture with each. E-mail the pictures to us at info@bruknernaturecenter.com or stop inside the Interpretive Building to show us. Anyone who takes photos with all three owls will receive a bag of bird seed as their prize. You may even see your photo on our Facebook or Instagram pages! The nature center is located at 5995 Horseshoe Bend Rd., Troy. For additional information, call 937-698-6493.

Do You Have News to Share? As we’ve said many times, the Stillwater Valley Advertiser is not a newspaper in the sense most think of a newspaper. The key is in our name – AdVertiSer. This publication relies on paid advertising to generate income for printing/postage costs, staff salaries, and building/equipment maintenance. However, the Advertiser is pleased to be of service to the community by offering open space – when available – to help our readers share news they feel is of interest to the community, such as engagements, weddings, milestone birthdays and anniversaries, birth announcements, five generation pictures, Vacation Bible Schools, library programs, school and club events, etc. If an organization, even non-profits like Veterans organizations, charge for a steak, chicken, or fish fry, we can’t offer free advertising to them, as their event competes with area restaurants who do pay for display advertising. Churches also compete with restaurant advertisers when they host Chili and Spaghetti Dinners, etc. The key is in what is done with the funds generated. For example, a church hosting a dinner to raise money for a new organ would be charged to advertise that event. However, if the church is hosting a dinner to benefit a family experiencing a health crisis or who have lost their home in a fire, the Advertiser waives the cost of advertising as our contribution to the effort. Those wishing to advertise an event that does charge an admittance fee can do so by including that information in our Calendar of Events for just $15 per week. If you question whether or not your event qualifies for free advertising, feel free to call our office at 937-473-2028, Monday thru Friday, 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Our helpful staff will be happy to assist you, or will direct your call to Gary Godfrey, president of Arens Corporation.

Word Limit Set for Letters to The Editor Occasionally we receive Letters to the Editor which are far too lengthy for publication. Letters of 250 words or less will fit comfortably into a 1/8 page size (twice the width of this article). Letters to the Editor will be published as available space allows. Those wishing to write a lengthier letter or wanting to guarantee their letter will be published in a specific edition, are welcome to run paid display advertising. All letters must be signed and a daytime phone number provided for verification.

Thank You

Resolutions that focus on health and fitness are made each year. Numerous people are eager to lose weight, improve their physical fitness levels or even stop habits that can hinder their mental or physical wellness. As the new year ticks closer, individuals can explore these popular resolutions as they get on the path to better health. 1. Commit to quit. The American Cancer Society says about half of all Americans who keep smoking will die due to the habit. Smoking kills more Americans than alcohol, car accidents, guns, HIV, and illegal drugs combined. Smoking not only causes cancer, it also damages nearly every part the body, including the bones, reproductive organs, mouth, skin, eyes, and blood vessels. Quitting can help reverse the effects of years of smoking. 2. Limit alcohol intake. The phrase “everything in moderation” applies to alcohol consumption. Excessive consumption of alcohol can lead to liver and kidney damage. When these organs are not functioning properly, they cannot filter toxins out of the body, resulting in potentially irreparable damage. Resolve to cut down on alcohol consumption if you are drinking more than two drinks per day. 3. Address stress. It’s easy to underestimate the effects of stress on the mind and body. Left unchecked, stress can contribute to heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure, says the Mayo Clinic. Resolving to reduce stress by adopting certain techniques can improve self-esteem and mood. 4. Exercise more readily. Physician Partners of America states that exercise can improve mood and sleep, help people control their weight, reduce the risk of heart disease, improve bone and muscle strength, and potentially extend their lives. Resolving to exercise doesn’t require drastic changes. Small steps can add up to big results. 5. Visit the doctor. Too often people put off going to the doctor until something is wrong with their health. It is much better to be proactive and avoid illness through testing and conversations with a physician. Doctors may be able to recognize symptoms and risk factors that could be indicative of future illness. Routine physical exams also will check cholesterol and glucose levels, monitor blood pressure and include other preventive care options. 6. Improve your diet. Eating more meals made at home and incorporating more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean protein into your meals can improve overall health. Healthy changes top the list of New Year’s resolutions each year. Certain resolutions can greatly improve overall health
