Community Members Honor & Remember Loved Ones at Ohio’s Hospice Of Miami County Butterfly Release As a way to remember and honor loved ones, Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County held its second butterfly release memorial service on Saturday, Aug. 14, at its new world-class Hospice House in Troy. The memorial service included a reading of names of loved ones being honored or remembered, a time of reflection, a moment of silence, poem readings, and a benediction. At the conclusion of the service, more than 200 participants released 250 live butterflies in memory of their loved ones. Following the service, light refreshments were served, and tours were offered of the new Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County Hospice House. “Our butterfly release memorial service is a unique and beautiful way to remember and honor family members and friends who are no longer with us,” said Carey Short, executive director of Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County. “We're honored to offer the butterfly release memorial service to members of our community.” Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County thanks the families, friends, and community members who attended this event and for their continued support of our mission.

Jeff Ruffing Follows Calling To Milestone Donation
10th Annual Memorial Blood Drive Honors Big Heart of Big Ed – CBC PRESENTS MILESTONE & CRISIS HEROES AWARDS – The celebration of the 10th annual Ed Lendenski Memorial Blood Drive on September 1 included the presentation of the Community Blood Center “Crisis Hero” award to the West Milton Lions Club and a surprise presentation of the CBC “Blood Drop” award to Ed’s widow, Carolyn Lendenski and family. It left Carolyn nearly speechless. “I had no idea,” she said. “I mean zilch! Oh, my goodness. I’m just flabbergasted.” The memorial blood drive honors the community leadership of “Big Ed” who was a coach, teacher, athletic director, and principal in his 28 years at Milton-Union High School. He received multiple blood transfusions during his battle with (L-R): State Rep. Steve Huffman, Carolyn Lendenski, the bone marrow disorder myelodysplastic syn- Lions Club drive coordinator Bob menker, CBC’s Cora drome. After his death in 2012 the family began Johnson, and ed’s daughter’s, Julie newman and Carol the blood drive to thank donors. ann patton The West Milton Lions Club hosts blood drives every two months at the West Milton United Church of Christ and they continued throughout the pandemic, including the 2020 Ed Lendenski blood drive. The 10th annual memorial blood drive was another success, totaling 70 donors, including 55 whole blood donations, six platelet and plasma donations, and four first-time donors for 105% of collection goal. State Sen. Steve Huffman (R-Tipp City) is a physician and lifetime blood donor who grew up in West Milton and was coached by Big Ed. He regularly supports the memorial blood drive and joined in the Blood Drop award presentation. “Throughout this community, they loved Ed,” said Sen. Huffman. “He was a coach, a principal, and a leader in the community where I grew up. Toward the end of his life, we saw what blood donations did for him. We recognize him and the people who donated the blood he needed. He dedicated his life and his whole heart to West Milton.” Carolyn Lendenski was joined at the blood drive by her daughters, Carol Ann Patton and Julie Newman, and her son, Eddie Lendenski, who made his milestone 25th lifetime donation. Eddie began donating platelets in 2011 to help his father. Lions blood drive coordinator Bob Menker first suggested holding a memorial blood drive to Carolyn. “When we started it was at Transfiguration Church,” he said. “I think it’s really paid off a lot. He was well liked, not only in our church but in the community.” The blood drive moved to West Milton United Church of Christ in 2016 to coincide with the Lions Club blood drive schedule. “Carolyn always made it a point to be here and greet everyone,” said Bob. “She’s had a lot of friends and co-workers who have come over the years.” One of those loyal donors is Steve Longenecker, who was coached by Big Ed at Milton-Union and was a West Milton Rotary Club member with him for 20 years. Steve donated at the first memorial blood drive and was there to donate again September 1. “Ed was a character, and so was I!” said Steve. “You could get by with things back then that I’m not sure you could now.” Steve mentioned Ed’s occasional “locker dance” discipline at football or wrestling practice from decades ago. “He used to pick me up by the shirt – clear off the ground – and bounce me off the lockers,” Steve said at the first memorial blood drive. “I deserved it. We were ornery – and still are!” An enduring message over the last 10 years of the Ed Lendenski Memorial Blood Drive has been the community need for blood and Ed’s compassion for his community. “He would be amazed people are still doing this,” said Carolyn, “and that it’s been going on for 10 years.”

The West Milton Lions Club can count on Arcanum donor Jeff Ruffing to support their blood drives at the West Milton United Church of Christ. It was a milestone visit on Wednesday, Sept. 1, as Jeff made his 100th lifetime donation at the 10th annual Ed Lendenski Memorial Blood Drive. “I come here every eight weeks,” said Jeff, who has been donating at the Lions blood drives for more than 10 years. Prior to that he supported multiple Community Blood Center blood drives in the area. “I started 20 years ago, I guess,” he said. “Something happened in my life and I told God I need to do more. Just going to the doctor for testing, they’d draw blood, and I passed out. My doctor told me, ‘Drink a glass of orange juice before you come.’ I did that and had no problems. Before that I thought, ‘There’s no way I can give blood.’ God helped me get through it.” “My mother always wanted to give blood, but couldn’t because she was anemic,” said Jeff, who wore a “Be the Good” donor T-shirt to the memorial blood drive that honors former Milton-Union High School principal Ed Lendenski, who needed multiple transfusions while undergoing treatment for a bone marrow disorder. “I know many people need blood,” said Jeff. “Hopefully, if I do, someone is there for me.”
