Some of the past pastors have included Rev. John Martin, Rev. Delmar Moyer, Rev. Harold Freeman, Rev. Dean Garrett, Rev. Bob Bitner, Rev. Kevin Boleen, Rev. Corey Lemmon, and their current pastor, Phillip Dell. Those presenting this 175th Year Celebration will be Dean Garrett (church history), Karen Garrett (pianist), Brookville Church Quartet with special music, and the main preacher will be Bob Bitner. As you imagine a Sunday in 1846, please see the parking lot filled with 100 horses and buggies. Move forward to present times and there have been adult and children Sunday School classes, special hymn sings, special services, and the annual Summer Bible school with over 50 children attending on the beautiful lawn with the century-old trees. Pastor Dell and the entire congregation of Harris Creek cordially invite you to attend this special service.

West Milton Lions Blood Drive Set Oct. 27 Community Blood Center’s “Blood Donors are the GOAT” campaign ends this month. Be great and be a “Cancer Fighter” by giving blood at the West Milton Lions Club community blood drive Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1-7 p.m., at the West Milton United Church of Christ, 108 S. Main St. Appointments are encouraged. Schedule online at www.DonorTime.com or call 937-461-3220. Everyone who registers to donate gets the “Cancer Fighters are the GOAT” T-shirt honoring October Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s the third and final design in the MayOctober GOAT campaign that challenged the community to give blood and give often during the pandemic. Blood donors are “Cancer Fighters” because nearly onefourth of the blood supply goes to cancer patients, higher blood component usage than any other disease. Chemotherapy and radiation treatments can damage bone marrow, reducing red cell and platelet production. Complex surgical procedures for cancer also require transfusions. COVID-19 restrictions continue to limit many corporate and community blood drives. CBC welcomes new donors, new platelet and plasma donors, and new blood drive sponsors. Call 937-461-3220 to learn how you can help.

Upper Valley Medical Center has earned Primary Stroke Center status from The Joint Commission. The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Center was awarded to UVMC based on continuous compliance with stringent performance standards. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a commitment to providing safe and quality patient care. Primary Stroke Center Certification recognizes health care organizations that provide clinical programs across the continuum of care for stroke. The certification evaluates how organizations use clinical outcomes and performance measures to identify opportunities to improve care, as well as to educate and prepare patients and their caregivers for discharge. UVMC underwent a rigorous, unannounced onsite review this past summer, during which a team of Joint Commission reviewers evaluated compliance with related certification standards. Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts, and patients. The reviewers also conducted onsite observations and interviews. “Primary Stroke Center Advanced Certification recognizes health care organizations committed to fostering continuous quality improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” said Mark Pelletier, RN, MS, chief operating officer for accreditation and certification operations, and chief nursing executive of The Joint Commission. “We commend Upper Valley Medical Center for using certification to reduce variation in its clinical processes and to strengthen its program structure and management framework for stroke patients.” “The UVMC family congratulates our stroke team for their outstanding efforts to earn this important certification,” said Kevin Harlan, UVMC president. “This status recognizes that UVMC provides the expertise, teamwork, and technologies necessary to provide our patients with a more advanced level of stroke care than ever before. We are proud of UVMC/Premier Health’s dedication to providing quality health care for our communities.” “Our stroke team has worked hard to earn this important accomplishment. It requires a carefully coordinated, dedicated effort to assure that the stroke program performance standards are met and maintained,” said Scott Kanagy, UVMC chief medical officer. “The stroke program also relies heavily on the work of local EMS personnel and emergency department physicians to serve as the first points of contact.” UVMC is part of the Premier Health system whose hospitals are recognized by The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for excellence in patient stroke care and outcomes.

Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County Accepting Patients At New Hospice House Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County is now accepting patients at its new, state-of-the-art Hospice House in Troy. On September 8, the not-for-profit hospice transferred patients from its inpatient care center at Upper Valley Medical Center to the Hospice House, which opened in August. Located on the campus of UVMC at 3230 N. Co. Rd. 25A, the facility serves hospice patients who require a higher level of care than they can receive at home. The 31,180-square foot Hospice House provides pain and comfort management for patients and allows family members to rest and receive support from the interdisciplinary care team of Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County. The world-class Hospice House houses the administrative offices that support the interdisciplinary care team. The facility also has training rooms for staff and volunteers in addition to community education rooms. During the September 8 transfer of patients, hospice nurses were located at both UVMC and the Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County Hospice House to help with transporting and receiving patients. A mobile care unit transported patients from UVMC to the Hospice House. “On day one of opening our new, world-class Hospice to provide patient care, we cared for nine patients, which is more than we could care for at our inpatient care center,” said Carey Short, executive director of Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County. “We’re honored and privileged to provide a home-like environment at our new facility for patients facing the end of life.” She expressed appreciation for UVMC staff who helped with the move. “Their team was very accommodating, helping us move items through the hospital to our moving truck,” Short said. Staff from Ohio’s Hospice, including pharmacy, IT, culinary, and maintenance teammates, also were onsite to help with the transition. “Overall, the transition was smooth for patients and families,” Short said. “We have received positive comments from our patients and their families about the new facility. This is a comfortable, calm, home-like environment for the patients and their families.” Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County is grateful for the support of the community. “We are thankful to the community and our partners in healthcare for supporting us in this new, amazing Hospice House for our patients and families,” Short said. “We’re grateful to all of the members of the community who have supported our mission to provide superior care and superior services to each patient and family we are privileged to serve.”

National School Bus Safety Week Theme Is

- be safe knOw the danger zOne Drivers, slow down and remain alert in school zones and near bus stops. Prepare to stop when you see flashing yellow or red lights from a school bus, and never pass a stopped school bus that is picking up or unloading students. Remember that kids are often excited about the start of school and may not be paying attention at all times. It’s our responsibility to be aware and keep them safe! • always use the sidewalk when walking to and from school. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic. • Look both ways before crossing the street. • Obey your bus driver’s rules and regulations, so they can get you to school quickly and safely. • remember to look to the right before you step off of the bus. Careless drivers in a hurry may try to pass on the right. • be aware of the street traffic around you. avoid wearing head phones while walking.

• Cross in front of the bus, and make sure the bus driver sees you pass. • never throw things on the bus or out of the bus window. always keep your hands and arms inside. • Practice good behavior on and off the bus. don’t get talked into breaking the rules. • wait for a signal from the bus driver before you cross the street. • If you miss the bus, call a parent or guardian to drive you to school. never ask a stranger. Jaywalking is dangerous. Cross the streets at the crosswalks.
