Do You Have News to Share? As we’ve said many times, the Stillwater Valley Advertiser is not a newspaper in the sense most think of a newspaper. The key is in our name – AdVertiSer. This publication relies on paid advertising to generate income for printing/postage costs, staff salaries, and building/equipment maintenance. However, the Advertiser is pleased to be of service to the community by offering open space – when available – to help our readers share news they feel is of interest to the community, such as engagements, weddings, milestone birthdays and anniversaries, birth announcements, five generation pictures, Vacation Bible Schools, library programs, school and club events, etc. If an organization, even non-profits like Veterans organizations, charge for a steak, chicken, or fish fry, we can’t offer free advertising to them, as their event competes with area restaurants who do pay for display advertising. Churches also compete with restaurant advertisers when they host Chili and Spaghetti Dinners, etc. The key is in what is done with the funds generated. For example, a church hosting a dinner to raise money for a new organ would be charged to advertise that event. However, if the church is hosting a dinner to benefit a family experiencing a health crisis or who have lost their home in a fire, the Advertiser waives the cost of advertising as our contribution to the effort. Those wishing to advertise an event that does charge an admittance fee can do so by including that information in our Calendar of Events for just $15 per week. If you question whether or not your event qualifies for free advertising, feel free to call our office at 937-473-2028, Monday thru Friday, 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Our helpful staff will be happy to assist you, or will direct your call to Gary Godfrey, president of Arens Corporation.

NEWS DEADLINE REMINDER

! "$

The deadline for submitting news articles for the Advertiser is 4:30 p.m. the Friday prior to publication. Due to space limitations, any articles received after that time cannot be guaranteed to run.

Help Community Blood Center recover from winter weather cancellations and replenish the blood supply by supporting the Covington Eagles community blood drive Monday, Feb. 14, 1 to 7 p.m., at 715 E. Broadway Ave., Covington. All registered donors receive a “Counting on You in 2022” long-sleeved T-shirt. Schedule an appointment online at www.donortime.com or call 937-461-3220. Winter weather cancellations have impacted CBC and the regional blood supply. The traditional challenges of winter are more difficult due to the continued impact of COVID-19. Type O blood remains in low supply. CBC is urging eligible community members to donate at least twice in 2022. Remote workers are encouraged to find a local blood drive and donate. CBC needs new platelet, plasma or double red cell donors. Call 937-461-3220 to learn how you can help.

Young Birders’ Club to Meet At BNC Saturday, Feb. 12 The Young Birders’ Club is geared for students in 5th – 12th grade who are members of Brukner Nature Center and have an interest in birding. High quality binoculars and field guides are provided for meetings and field trips. The unpredictability of our winters seems to be higher than ever. As climates begin to shift and change, the effect this will have on animal populations is largely unknown. One initiative to help study the effect on our bird populations is “Project Climate Watch.” This month we will walk to various points on BNC property to count white-breasted nuthatches. This data will then be compared to nuthatch counts that will be completed in the summer. The information will be submitted for evaluation of the movement of this species. Please contact Brian for more detailed information at brian@bruknernaturecenter.com.

COA Gives Thanks For the Memories The Covington Outreach Association thanks the community for their generous donations that made Christmas morning a happy memory for 75 Covington children. Santa brought Legos, baby dolls, fishing poles, basketballs, footballs, arts and crafts, LED lighting, fuzzy hats and gloves, sweatshirts, slippers, Teddy bears, Blippi’s, Baby Yodas, and a giant pink Flamingo. The COA provided groceries for Christmas dinners for over 40 families, and shared a warm handmade blanket with each resident at the Stillwater Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center. A special thanks to our Covington churches and the Staci Jo Blythe “Christmas in July” Memorial Golf Tournament for their faithful support of our children’s gift program. You help make holiday dreams come true. The COA is available year-round to assist Covington residents with emergency food and financial needs. Please call us at 937-541-5581.

BUSINESS SERVICE DIRECTORY!

There is no better time to look for wildlife tracks at Brukner Nature Center than a snowy February day! Wildlife tracks can tell you a lot about what animals are present, where they are going, and what they might have been doing. As you hike our trails this month, you can take a look at the track identification signs we have posted along the way. These will help you in your investigation. Be sure to keep your eye out around waterways as many wildlife species will stop by these areas for a drink or ample hunting opportunities. One such species is the American mink. These critters have five evenly spaced toes with claws, and their tracks are generally about 1.7–1.9 inches in length. All four tracks from their feet will generally be very close together as they are bounders. Bounding animals usually have long thin bodies and move like a slinky. They make their tracks by starting with all four feet together and leaping forward with all four feet hitting the ground at the same time. Be sure to bring along your smart phone to take any photos of interesting tracks you may find. Then e-mail the photos to us at info@bruknernaturecenter.com. We will love to see what you are finding along your hike and you may even see your photo on our Facebook or Instagram accounts. Bundle up and enjoy your hike! Brukner Nature Center is located at 5995 Horseshoe Bend Rd., Troy.

LEGAL NOTICE

Over 130 members of the community spent time remembering their loved ones during EverHeart Hospice’s Second Annual “A Time of Remembrance” Luminaria Memorial Drive-Thru held in December. What started as a safe way to allow loved ones to remember their loved ones during the height of Covid-19 in 2020 has turned into a beautiful new tradition to look forward to each holiday season. Sarah DePoy, Bereavement Coordinator at EverHeart Hospice and organizer of the event, shared, “It warms my heart to see everyone come out to “A Time of Remembrance.” I was handing out gifts at the end of the drive-thru, and hearing the thank you’s and words of gratitude from the attendees was overwhelming. Knowing that our event is helping them work through the healing process of their grief is truly touching.” This year was the first time Beverly Baltes, Volunteer Coordinator at EverHeart, helped with the luminaria. Although she wasn’t sure what to expect, she was still overtaken by surprise at the visceral response she experienced. Thinking of the lost lives represented by each glowing luminaria was heartbreaking, each one holding the place of mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and friends. “When helping someone find the luminaria of their loved one and seeing the light of remembrance on their faces as they recalled last words spoken, the last embrace, that last look… my heart was overwhelmed.” The event also included a homage to Veteran patients, with a special patriotic display of American Flags lining the luminarias and a Veteran volunteer on duty to show his respect for the lost Veterans. Beverly recalls the emotion felt that evening. "Whenever I looked at the volunteer, Richard Hyatt, himself a Veteran, standing at attention, holding the large American flag, standing vigil over the luminaria of the veterans, I could hold back the tears no longer. This event will be one of those wonderful memories that will stay with me for a lifetime.” A video will be released in the coming weeks highlighting the event for those unable to attend or for individuals wanting a look back on the night. A special thanks goes to Nathan Leatherman of Captured Video & Photography, volunteering his time to record the evening. We’d also like to thank Wayne HealthCare, all individual donors, the Greenville Fire and Police Departments, and all EverHeart staff members and volunteers who helped with this event. For more information on bereavement support that EverHeart Hospice offers to patients, families, and anyone in the community, visit www.everhearthospice.org or call 800-417-7535.
