BHS Community Blood Drive Scheduled February 10 Community Blood Center’s message “Counting on You in 2022” continues in February with a call for donors to support the winter blood supply. Donate at the Bradford High School community blood drive Thursday, Feb. 10, from 3-7 p.m., at 750 Railroad Ave., Bradford. All registered donors receive a “Counting on You in 2022” longsleeved T-shirt. Schedule an appointment online at www.DonorTime.com or call 937-461-3220. The heart of winter is a difficult time to hold blood drives and the challenge is greater due to the continued impact of COVID-19. Type O and A-negative blood remain in low supply. CBC is urging eligible community members to donate at least twice in 2022. People still working at home are encouraged to donate at a local blood drive. CBC also welcomes new platelet, plasma, or double red cell donors. Call 937-461-3220 to learn how you can help.
EverHeart Hospice Shares Eight Common Myths And Misconceptions of Hospice Care Are all hospices the same? All hospices are not the same. A hospice can be a communitybased, non-profit organization like EverHeart Hospice. However, it can also be for-profit and part of a national chain. When exploring hospice options, it is important to ask for the local hospice with a trusted record and is a non-profit entity. Is hospice care only for a patient who has cancer? Hospice is not just for cancer patients. Any life-limiting or terminally ill patient with a life expectancy of six months or less may qualify a person for hospice care. Increasingly, patients with diseases other than cancer are becoming hospice patients. Can a hospice patient live alone? A patient can choose to live alone and receive care. Supportive family members and friends, along with regular visits from the hospice care team, can enable a person to remain alone in their home. Does receiving hospice care mean I am giving up? The goal of hospice is to provide comfort and support. Receiving hospice care means that the patient has decided to no longer seek curative medical care for their illness. Instead, they want to focus on comfort and quality of life to spend as much time with their loved ones making cherished memories. Can a person in a nursing home receive hospice care? Patients can choose to receive hospice care wherever they call home. This may be their own home, nursing facility, assisted living facility, or an inpatient hospice care center. Is hospice care only for older adults? Anyone who meets the requirements can choose hospice care. There are no age restrictions. Older adults most often receive care, which leads to this myth. Will a hospice patient pass away sooner than a patient without hospice care? This is not true, and in some cases, patients may live longer. Hospice care can provide better control of pain and symptoms, may lessen stress within the family unit, and an adjustment to care focused on comfort rather than curative treatment brings a sense of relief to both the patient and their family. How is payment for hospice care covered? Hospice care can be paid for in various ways, including Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, private pay, or any combination of these methods. EverHeart Hospice will never turn anyone away due to their inability to pay.

EverHeart Hospice Receives Proceeds From Cooper Farms Turkey Trot 5K Cooper Farms recently presented EverHeart Hospice with a check for $2,000, raised from their 14th Annual Turkey Trot 5K. This yearly tradition is a highlight for many each November, this year hosting 230 runners. When asked about this year’s event, Hillary Stein, race coordinator and team member at Cooper Farms, shared, “We are very pleased with how this year’s race turned out. Everyone seemed to have a fantastic time. It was great seeing everyone come out to support such a great cause!” Erica Wood, Business Development Specialist at EverHeart Hospice, accepted the check on EverHeart’s behalf. She shared, “EverHeart Hospice is truly thankful for the generosity and support that Cooper Farms has shown our agency and its mission each year. This year, the proceeds will help us with our Legacy Program, which provides keepsake HILLARY STEIN, race coordinator and items for our patients’ families to help them remember their Cooper Farms team member, presents loved ones. These items currently include heartbeat bears $2,000 check to EverHeart Hospice and hand photographs. Contributions like this will help us Business Development Specialist Erica grow our program in hopes of adding new items in the Wood future.” Mark your calendars for this year’s Turkey Trot, set for Saturday, Nov 5. You’ll find additional information on Cooper Farms and their Turkey Trot at www.cooperfarms.com.

Do You Have News to Share? As we’ve said many times, the Stillwater Valley Advertiser is not a newspaper in the sense most think of a newspaper. The key is in our name – AdVertiSer. This publication relies on paid advertising to generate income for printing/postage costs, staff salaries, and building/equipment maintenance. However, the Advertiser is pleased to be of service to the community by offering open space – when available – to help our readers share news they feel is of interest to the community, such as engagements, weddings, milestone birthdays and anniversaries, birth announcements, five generation pictures, Vacation Bible Schools, library programs, school and club events, etc. If an organization, even non-profits like Veterans organizations, charge for a steak, chicken, or fish fry, we can’t offer free advertising to them, as their event competes with area restaurants who do pay for display advertising. Churches also compete with restaurant advertisers when they host Chili and Spaghetti Dinners, etc. The key is in what is done with the funds generated. For example, a church hosting a dinner to raise money for a new organ would be charged to advertise that event. However, if the church is hosting a dinner to benefit a family experiencing a health crisis or who have lost their home in a fire, the Advertiser waives the cost of advertising as our contribution to the effort. Those wishing to advertise an event that does charge an admittance fee can do so by including that information in our Calendar of Events for just $15 per week. If you question whether or not your event qualifies for free advertising, feel free to call our office at 937473-2028, Monday thru Friday, 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Our helpful staff will be happy to assist you, or will direct your call to Gary Godfrey, president of Arens Corporation.
