Valley Echoes by Gary Godfrey Memories Of The Pumpkin Show . . . Over the years, I’ve received many letters, comments and suggestions for this column.

Keep Saturday, Oct. 13 Open For Ft. Rowdy Museum Event The Fort Rowdy Museum ghosts will be out of town Saturday, Oct. 13. Consequently, a Ft. Rowdy Museum event will take place. It could be the inestimable Ham and Bean Supper, or... it could be a mystery event! Pray for good weather, and keep Saturday, Oct. 13, open. Please keep your ear to the ground, and read the Stillwater Valley Advertiser next week for “The Further Plans of The Fort Rowdy Museum” – ghosts notwithstanding!

Lois Kindell, of Versailles, recently sent me her recollection of the Bradford Pumpkin Show from during the war. Her letter went something like this: Hello, My sister, Helen Rhoades, was just taking about the Pumpkin Show. She thought I should tell you my memories from my teen-age years, which was during the war. The rides came to town via train, because of the gas shortage. We kids sacked confetti in Zimmerman’s slaughterhouse building just east of Moody Avenue. We were given a bag of confetti each night we worked. We had to watch for metal slugs, which were pieces of metal that came off the machinery. Later, they started straining confetti. Miami avenue was lined on both sides of the street for several blocks. Main Street was for one block. There were gambling wheels, Indian music, lots of food stands and games to play. The vegetable and fruit display was on the sidewalk just south of the Dollar Store’s current location, going south to the Ice Cream store. My grandfather Palsgrove was a guard every night.

As kids, we couldn’t wait to hear the fire whistle go off on Tuesday eve at 6:00 p.m. signaling the show had started. If we had 15¢ we could enjoy one of the many rides. (Didn’t get to ride much) There was a free tight-wire acrobat to enjoy. All my memories are thoughts of good times. I hope you understand what Helen thought I should tell you. Mom always dressed Fred, Gene and I for the school parade. We did win a few times. As teens, we would go uptown on Sunday morning, to kick away confetti from the gutters to find coins. Everything was gone from the streets. We felt rich if we found 50¢. Thank you, Lois Kindell This week’s bottom line: God gave us memory so that we might have roses in December. -- James M. Barrie
