Shop locally this holiday season Shopping is a big part of the holiday season, when families and friends gather to reconnect and exchange gifts. While the popularity of shopping online has grown, such practices are not always ecofriendly or timely, as gifts bought online must be packaged and shipped, wasting valuable resources and time that last-minute shoppers may not have. The benefits of shopping locally go beyond convenience and the chance to reduce your carbon footprint. The following are a few ways that shopping locally this holiday season can directly benefit your community and the people who call it home.
local can strengthen the local economy by creating jobs that may not exist if you and members of your community fail to support local small businesses. community identity Local small businesses go a long way toward creating a neighborhood identity, and that identity can create a stronger sense of community among you and your neighbors. In addition, a unique community identity can make your town more attractive to outsiders, and that appeal can improve the value of local real estate while also attracting more people to local businesses in your neighborhood. uniqueness of gifts The gifts you buy when shopping locally also can benefit your community. Gifts purchased from small local businesses tend to be more unique than items bought from national chains, as smaller retailers tend to sell more homemade items than their national competitors. Recipients of such items may find such gifts more thoughtful than mass produced items bought from national
LocaL economy When men and women shop locally, they are putting money back into their local communities. Local small businesses may be owned by your neighbors, and it can be comforting to know that your holiday shopping dollars are going to support a neighbor instead of a large corporation. Local businesses also employ your neighbors, so shopping
chains, and the uniqueness of homemade gifts may encourage the gifts’ recipients to visit your community and do some shopping, further benefitting your local economy. customer service The accessibility of customer service is another oftoverlook-ed benefit of shopping locally. When buying from national chains, especially during the holiday season when such \businesses may be overwhelmed with orders, making contact with customer service
departments can be a trying exercise in patience. Long wait times on the phone or online can make the process of contacting customer service extremely frustrating. But such frustration is rare when buying from local businesses, as consumers can simply take their products into the store, where employees can immediately address their concerns. In addition, buying locally makes it more convenient for friends and family members who also live in your community to return their gifts.

Black Friday Safety Tips The unofficial beginning to the holiday shopping season, Black Friday compels many people to get out of bed in the middle of the night in the hopes of landing great deals on gifts for their loved ones. The competition to find deals on Black Friday can sometimes get heated. As a result, some shoppers have found themselves in unsafe situations in the past. Many retailers have taken steps to make the atmosphere in their stores on Black Friday less hectic and more consumer-friendly. Shoppers can follow suit and take the following precautions to ensure this Black Friday is as safe as possible. • Recognize you might not get everything on your list. Inventory may be limited in regard to sale items on Black Friday. Make a list of the items you hope to buy and where you hope to buy them, ranking each item in terms of importance. Then calmly move from store to store, recognizing that you may not end up with every item on your list. Accepting this ahead of time can make the day seem less hectic and more safe. • Protect and conceal your purchases. Shoppers might not be as sharp when shopping Black Friday sales in the wee hours of the morn-

ing. That could make them more vulnerable to thieves. Protect and conceal purchases at all times. If necessary, bring items to the car after each purchase, making sure to place them in a concealed vehicle trunk where they are not visible to prospective thieves. • Leave small children at home. While horror stories of Black Friday holiday shoppers stampeding through stores are few and far between, malls may not be the safest places for small children to spend the day after Thanksgiving. Overstressed shoppers running on fumes and long lines at the checkout counters can make things unsafe for small kids and try their patience. Shoppers who plan to shop on Black Friday should leave their small children home with a spouse or relative to avoid accident or injury. • Park in well-lit areas. Parking can be hard to find on Black Friday. But shoppers should not give in and park far away from stores in poorly lit areas of parking lots. Doing so makes shoppers vulnerable to theft or attack. • Be attentive in the parking lot. In addition to keeping an eye out for prospective thieves or attackers, Black Friday shoppers should be mindful of motorists in the parking lots. Tired shoppers may be focused on getting home and speed through parking lots. Stay alert to avoid exhausted drivers. Finding deals might be the ultimate goal of Black Friday, but shoppers also must be mindful of safety when shopping during the unofficial beginning of the holiday shopping season.

Black Friday sales have become a staple of the holiday shopping season. On Black Friday, many items are deeply discounted and shoppers may wait in line for lengthy periods of time to snag some of the season’s hottest gifts. Black Friday shoppers often target high-profile, expensive electronics. In fact, according to the retail advisor and trend forecaster NerdWallet, technology products are among the most sought-after products among Black Friday shoppers. Each year, televisions, tablets, laptops, notebooks, smartphones, and gaming consoles fly off the shelves in record numbers on Black Friday. According to the shopping resource Deal News, shoppers poised to purchase one of the latest smartphone offerings this shopping season may find that Android products are more available and more heavily discounted than Apple products. Although Apple recently debuted its iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X, the iPhone X is unlikely to be marked down, so shoppers in the market for discounted iPhones might be wise to focus their efforts on the iPhone 8. Shoppers also may have their eyes on gadgets for their homes. In 2016, products like Amazon’s Echo were top-sellers, and connected home technology continues to excite consumers. Black Friday isn’t all about technology, however. Kitchen cookware and small appliances also attract shoppers on Black Friday. Typically high-priced items like stand mixers, brewing systems, vacuums, and blenders are popular among Black Friday shoppers.

Thanksgiving Holiday Did you know that not everyone liked the idea of a national Thanksgiving holiday?
STILLWATER In 1789, President George Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving, asking Americans to gather on the last day of November to give thanks for the establishment of “a form CLASSIFIEDS of government for their safety and happiness.”

Some members of Congress objected, asserting that the authority to designate a day of thanksgiving belonged to the governors, not the president. (Just like today. Nothing has changed.)
# '
Others argued that Thanksgiving was a “religious matter.” Therefore the government’s establishment of a national thanksgiving was forbidden by the First Amendment. (Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion . . .)

Mr. Washington proclaimed a second day of Thanksgiving in 1795, and presidents John Adams, James Madison and others did the same in subsequent years. But many presidents, particularly Thomas Jefferson, still opposed doing this.

It was not until 1863 that President Abraham Lincoln established the regular tradition of observing days of national thanksgiving.

And the beat went on . . . Professor Robert Jensen of the University of Texas, reflected his version like this: “One indication of moral progress in the United States would be the replacement of Thanksgiving Day and its selfindulgent family feasting with a National Day of Atonement accompanied by a self-reflective collective fasting.”

What you need to know about fasting from food and drink . . . “ . . . A progression should be observed in your fasting, especially if this discipline is new to you and you are unfamiliar with its physical effects. Don’t start out with a week-long water fast! Begin by skipping one meal each day for two to three days and setting aside the money it would have cost to give to the poor. Spend the time praying that you would have used for eating.” If you’ve never fasted before, be aware that in the early stages you may get dizzy and have headaches. This is part of the body’s cleansing process and will pass with time. Be sure that you break the fast gradually with fresh fruit and vegetables. Do not overeat after the fast. Chili and pizza may sound good after several days of not eating, but please, exercise a little restraint and say no!” (from Sam Storms, the author of What Christians Need to Know about Fasting). This week’s bottom line: Everyone has his or her own opinion. Let’s simply give thanks for our entire blessing.
