Newton Blue Ribbons 4-H Club to Meet Monday, March 12

Ft. Rowdy Museum will have a featured speaker at their next meeting on Monday, March 12. Jeff Leininger will talk about the old hardware store uptown and work he's doing on the building at 101 N. High St. All who have an interest in the past – and the future – are invited to attend the next regular meeting of Ft. Rowdy Museum, aka the Covington Newberry Historical Society (CNHS), on Monday, March 12, at 7 pm. Welcome to the past. It's just starting now.

Dues will be accepted from existing members and from anyone who wants to become a member and support the work of the Museum. Also, ideas and suggestions will be accepted on ways to engage the community and improve the Museum.

On Saturday, March 10, you are welcome to come to the Pleasant Hill Laundromat to do your laundry for FREE between the hours of 12 noon and 2 p.m. Bring on those dirty clothes!

So that all who come can get their laundry done for FREE, there will be a limit of two loads at a time for each family. Volunteers will hand you quarters and provide free laundry detergent and dryer sheets.

We will then be holding monthly committee meetings on the second Thursday of each month, through July. Beginning in August, we will be holding weekly meetings, also on Thursdays.

You have probably heard that diversification is a key to investment success. So, you might think that if diversifying your investments is a good idea, it might also be wise to diversify your investment providers – after all, aren’t two (or more) heads better than one?

Before we look at that issue, let’s consider the first half of the “diversification” question – namely, how does diversifying your investment portfolio help you?

Here’s the key point: Stocks and bonds often move in different directions. If you only own U.S. stocks, you could take a big hit during a market downturn, but if you own domestic and international stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit and other types of investments, your portfolio may be better protected against market volatility, and you’ll have more opportunities for positive results.

So, it clearly is a good idea to diversify your investment portfolio.

Now, let’s move on to diversifying financial service providers. Why shouldn’t you have one IRA here and another one there, or enlist one advisor to help you with some types of investments and a different advisor assisting you with others?

Actually, some good reasons exist to consider consolidating all your investment accounts with one provider. For one thing, you’ll keep better track of your assets. Many people do misplace or forget about some of their savings and investments, but this will be far less likely to happen to you if you hold all your accounts in one place.

Also, if you have accounts with several different financial service providers, you might be incurring a lot of paperwork – and many fees.

You can cut down on clutter and expense by consolidating your accounts.

But most important, by placing all your accounts with a single provider, possibly under the supervision of a single financial advisor, you will find it much easier to follow a single, unified investment strategy, based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. You won’t get conflicting advice and you’ll receive clear guidance on important issues, such as the amounts you can afford to withdraw each year from your retirement accounts once you do retire.

Diversification and consolidation – one is good for building an investment portfolio, while the other can help you invest more efficiently and effectively. Put the two concepts together, and make them work for you.

Smart energy choices, savings goals of new Farm Bureau member benefit The Ohio Farm Bureau Energy Program is a valuable new benefit for the organization’s members that will provide education and protection for energy consumers and offers cost savings to eligible participants. As an added bonus, Farm Bureau’s partner, Community Energy Advisors, will award three $500 quarterly prizes to winning Farm Bureau members between now and the end of 2018.

“Making smart choices on energy can be complicated. Our goal with this program is to make it easier for our members, and maybe save them some money,” said Adam Sharp, executive vice president of Ohio Farm Bureau.

All Farm Bureau members, whether they live on farms or in cities, can participate. The protection aspects of the program will advise Farm Bureau members on such things as their rights as energy consumers, how to handle energy service solicitors, how to assess contracts, and avoid scams and fraud. Education components keep members on top of changes in the energy marketplace, advise on new regulations and rate changes and provide energy efficiency tips. Members served by for-profit utilities may see an average 10 percent cost savings on electricity or natural gas through a process that requires suppliers to compete for the member’s business. There is no cost to the program.

J. Andrew Fulker Scholarships Available The Scholarship Committee of the Miami County Bar Assn. is receiving applications for scholarship grants from the J. Andrew Fulker Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund was established, in cooperation with the Troy Foundation, as a lasting tribute to Troy attorney J. Andrew Fulker, who died in an auto accident in 1989.

The scholarship fund is designed to assist deserving law students who are residents of Miami County.

Grant recipients will be selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Miami County Bar Assn. Grants will be used for law school tuition. To be eligible, an applicant must be admitted for full-time attendance at a college of law or law school in a program designed to lead to a Juris Doctor or similar law degree.

The scholarship fund operates as an endowment fund, with grants awarded from the income earned on the principal of the fund. Gifts to the J. Andrew Fulker Memorial Scholarship Fund are eligible for deduction as a charitable contribution for federal income tax purposes. Contributions may be made payable to the Troy Foundation, designated for the J. Andrew Fulker Memorial Scholarship Fund, and mailed or delivered to Melissa A. Kleptz, Executive Director, Troy Foundation, 216 W. Franklin St., Troy, OH 45373.

Pleasant Hill History Center Reopening The Pleasant Hill History Center reopened from the “winter vacation” on Monday, March 5.

The center will be open until fall every Monday from 3-7 p.m. The center is handicap accessible. Stop by for a visit – numerous items are on display. Some items for sale are notecards, post cards and prints of artwork, created by Marcus Miller, and Cat's Meow replicas of the monument, school, and water tower.
