Hoffman UMC Annnounces Winners From Recent Art Show The 12th annual Hoffman United Methodist Church Art Show took place in West Milton on August 3, 4 and 5.

All those attending had the opportunity to vote on their three favorite pieces among the eighty-plus on display. When the People's Choice ballots from all three days were tallied, the following were announced as winners: First place - Tom Kinarney of Dayton for ZooSnooz-z-z $ 500.

Second place - Regina Whipp of Dayton for Rest Stop - $400.

Third place - Kay Cress of Greenville for Mountain Jake $ 300.

Those receiving $100 awards were: Debbie Gregory for Rivers Glow; Linda Lock for Chief Blue Jacket; Lori Meyer for To Be Determined; Karen Offenbacker for Memories of Grandpa; Carole Schafer for Little Lee; Ron Smith for Great Falls; Dona Snipes for Fanciful Butterfly - pottery; George Stum for Honey Creek Buck; and Ron Wickersham for At Water's Edge.

Thanks are due to Bill Netzley for providing the award money and to Bob Menker of Patterson's Flowers for the variety of plants placed throughout the show.

Covington Elementary to Hold Open House Monday, August 20 The Covington Elementary School will hold an open house Monday, Aug. 20, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Students will be able to visit their classrooms and meet their teachers before the first day of school.

Children will be able to take home handbooks and forms that parents can read through and return to school the following day.

Representatives from the PTO, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, school transportation, PLUS organization, and cafeteria will provide important information in the gymnasium.

Fee payments will be accepted during Open House. New student registration will not take place during the Open House. School staff will also be on hand to answer any additional questions.

Troy Mayors’ Concert Planned for Sunday in Downtown Troy The Troy Mayors’ Concert will be held on Prouty Plaza in downtown Troy on Sunday, Aug. 19, at 7:00 p.m. The Dayton Philharmonic Band, under the direction of Patrick Reynolds, and Summer Chorus, directed by Christine Smith, will be presenting the Lights of Broadway.

The outstanding soprano vocalist Alvina Salina and guest conductor Danny Elma will be featured.

Alvina is with the Dept. of Music at the University of Dayton. Danny is retired as music director at Bethel Local Schools.

This year marks the 26th anniversary of the event that also features Troy Mayor Michael Beamish as conductor for His Honor March.

This summer event is being presented through the generosity of The Troy Foundation, the Premier Health Network / UMEH and the Kettering Health Network, with additional support from many other businesses and individuals.

Because of this support, the concert is offered free of charge to the public. Limited seating will be available, however you are encouraged to bring your lawn chairs.

In the event of rain, the concert will be at Hobart Arena. As in past years, handicapped parking will be available on S. Market St., with Girl Scouts available to assist with wheelchairs.

Duck Dynasty’s John Godwin to Visit Fields Of Grace Worship Center & Ft. Rowdy Gathering On Sunday Sept. 2, Fields of Grace Worship Center in Covington will host John Godwin at their 9:30 a.m. service and again at the Covington Community Park during Ft. Rowdy Gathering at 11:30 a.m.

Godwin is one of only two regular cast members of Duck Dynasty who is not part of the Robertson family. His official title at Duck Commander is Shipping Manager, but he also builds duck calls and manages supplies. He has worked at Duck Commander since 2002.

John Godwin, or as his fellow employees call him, Godwin, will be speaking about his life before and during his career with Duck Dynasty. John’s wife, Paula, will be accompanying him.

He will be signing autographs and having photos taken after the service at Ft. Rowdy in the Mountain Man Encampment.

Childcare and nursery will be provided at Fields of Grace for ages 6 months - 3rd grade during the 9:30 a.m. service.

In case of rain the 11:30 a.m. service will be held at Fields of Grace. There will be no childcare offered for this service.

This is free to all and no tickets are required.

CHS-UVCC Finance Team Earns Top Honors Burglary – and the unexpected expenses that come with it – was just one of three no-win financial scenarios students in the Covington High School – Upper Valley Career Center Satellite course, Personal Financial Management, faced in a national competition known as The H&R Block Budget Challenge.

The team, CHS-UVCC Lotsa BUCC$, competed February 15-April 26, in the largest of six 10-week online simulation competitions held in 2017-2018 by the H&R Block Budget Challenge. Out of 51,461 students, Grades 9-12, and 2,348 teams, CHS-UVCC Lotsa BUCC$ placed 2nd, with eight of its members earning Top Honors.

Sophomore Joshua Latimer led the team and finished 137th out of 51,461 competitors. Morgan Kimmel, Caleb Roetter-Ditty, Sarah Remley, Madison Jones, Devin Williams, Dylan Lucas, and Madison Hite also earned Top Honors in all three point categories: Credit Worthiness, Knowledge, and Skill, and are ranked in the top 200 individuals nationwide. Tyler Owens, Dalton Weer, and Madison Kearns finished in the Top 300.

The H&R Block Budget Challenge replicates real-world budgeting and personal finance decision-making. By simulating an adult’s financial life – paying bills, investing in retirement, managing loans and more – students take a personal finance “road test.” This learn-by-doing educational approach allows high schoolers to make real-world mistakes without facing real-world consequences. Each competition features different “no-win” scenarios that mirror real life. Students must choose the least damaging course of action, and they earn or lose points based on their financial decisions. The difficulty of the scenario the CHSUVCC Lotsa BUCC$ team faced is easily judged by the span of team scores, ranging from the 1st place score of +4,873 and the last place score of -27,343. The CHS-UVCC Team came within 116 points of 1st place, thanks to each member’s dedication, knowledge, and skill.

Church Histories To Be Presented At PH History Center The Pleasant Hill History Center will present a program on the history of the many churches in Pleasant Hill and Newton Township on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 7:00 p.m.
