Where will I study?

The course will be taught at your local centre.

What qualifications do I need to enrol on this course? Potential students should have attained 1 Higher (minimum C pass), plus 2 Standard Grades or Intermediate 2s. At least one of these qualifications should be Maths, Physics or Computing, and another should be English or Communications. Alternatively, a relevant NC qualification (eg. NC Sound Production) totalling at least 12 credits. Mature students, and others not in possession of the above qualifications, will be considered based on interview and on relevant work experience.

Will I receive a recognised qualification? Yes, upon completing the course you will receive a recognised qualification at Higher National Certificate, which is at SCQF level 7.

How can I continue to develop my skills? After successfully completing the course you will be able to progress to further study at HND or Degree level.


Why should I consider an HNC Sound Production course? Do you want to learn the practical and theoretical skills involved in sound production, the music business and performance? Do you want to enhance your employability skills and career prospects with an industry recognised qualification which develops not only practical recording and production skills but also allows you to explore and understand the workings of the creative industries Do you want to work towards a qualification which will enable you to study further at HND level and beyond? You may be a school leaver looking to study for a future career. Or you could already be working within the music and audio industry but looking to improve your skills. Using the latest industry standard Pro Tools software and a combination of digital and analogue recording equipment, this course will give you the opportunity to develop technical proficiency and acquire industry recognised skills and knowledge. If you are interested in studio based sound production, working in the live sound environment or in the commercial areas of film, animation and computer games this may well be the right course for you.


The course will introduce the following areas: • Multi –Track Recording and Mixing • Sound Production – Theory and Practice • Working in the Creative Industries • Acoustics • Digital Audio Workstations • Location Recording • Sound Reinforcement Students may also work towards the industry recognised Pro Tools 101 qualification.
