Health and Social Care SVQ 2 Children’s Care, Learning and Development A vocational course designed to equip students - both school leavers and more mature students - with the theoretical and practical skills required for continued progression towards a career in the childcare industry. Students who successfully complete this course will be able to register as a support worker with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC). The course will introduce areas such as : • • • • • •
Contributing to positive relationships Helping to keep children safe Supporting children’s development Developing your practice in children’s care, learning and development Preparing and maintaining needs driven environments Supporting children’s learning through play

SVQ 3 Children’s Care Learning and Development A course designed for those students who wish to continue to develop their skills enabling them to work more knowledgeably with children from 0 -16 years of age in a supervisory capacity. The course will be very practical in nature and students will spend three days each week in placements which will allow them to gain hands-on experience in the workplace. The course will introduce the following required areas: • • • • •
Develop and promote positive relationships Develop and maintain a healthy, safe and secure environment for children Promote children’s development Reflect on and develop your own practice Protect and promote children’s rights
You will also be able to study four additional units in areas which interest you specifically. These will include: promoting health and physical development in children, early intervention for the benefit of both children and families, leadership qualities, developing a childminding business, supporting children who have experienced trauma and supporting parents with numeracy, literacy and language needs.

SVQ 4 Children’s Care Learning and Development This course is suitable for those currently working as a manager or lead practitioner in an early education or childcare setting. Prospective students are required to be employed in a role with responsibility for quality assurance, staff supervision and resource management. The course will enable students to gain confidence in their role, understand various management and leadership styles and develop and encourage reflective practice which can be practically applied to improve delivered provision thus further benefitting the needs of the children in the setting. Students will be assessed within their work situation and will develop a portfolio which will enable them to match their skills and knowledge to nationally agreed standards for care. Students will attend college once each week for a one to one meeting with their tutor.

Towards a Career in Childcare This course is suitable for both school leavers and more mature students wishing to return to learning or looking to change career direction. HNC Early Education and Childcare This course has been designed for students who wish to follow a career in childcare or education – at Practitioner level – or wish to progress to degree level study in Teacher Training, Social Work, Child and Youth Studies or a similar discipline. The course contains a strong practical element which will encourage students to develop competence in the knowledge, skills, attitudes and understanding needed to perform effectively in the workplace. The HNC Early Education and Childcare will provide students with an understanding of the values and principles underlying early education and childcare and will look to develop the appropriate skills needed to work with a range of service users in early education and childcare settings. The course will enable students to integrate knowledge, theory and practice effectively in a wide variety of workplace settings and will allow the student to understand and appreciate how the National Care Standards and SSSC Codes of Practice should be reflected in and underpin their own practice.

Creative Industries NC Sound Production You may be a school leaver looking to study for a future career, you could already be working within the music and audio industry but looking to improve your skill or you may be a more mature student wishing to change career direction and return to study. This course will help you develop your skills and gain confidence and practical experience in a broad range of practical recording tasks. You will also be given the opportunity to explore some of the very diverse sound production requirements which exist within the music and audio industry in areas including recorded music, TV, radio and film. This course has been designed to introduce students to the very specific practical skills required within the specialised area of computer games design and to enhance further study and employability skills through a formally recognised qualification.

NC Creative Industries – Introduction to Creative Arts The creative and cultural industries in the UK are constantly growing, developing and adapting to meet new areas of application and demand. This course develops the underlying knowledge and skills required for progression to further study in the many disciplines of art and design or direct entry into art and design based employment. The blend of practical skills and theoretical study within the course will also help students make informed choices on specialisms for further study. NC Creative Industries – Dance and Drama As the creative industries sector continues to grow the demand for suitably qualified practitioners with practical experience is strong. This course introduces students to the practical skills utilised in dance and drama. You will gain an appreciation of dance and performance techniques and develop knowledge, skills and understanding in choreography. Students will also explore a range of appropriate techniques in voice, movement and acting, and develop skills for presentation at audition.
