Literature 1 and Communications 4 – a combined course
YOUR LOCAL COLLEGE
Why should I consider a Literature 1 and Communications 4 combined course? Do you want to enjoy and appreciate novels, plays and poetry? Do you want to improve your practical skills in reading, writing, listening and presentation? Do you want to undertake a course which will help you gain access to a wide range of courses – at Higher National and Degree level - and many commercial opportunities? If
yes,
then
the
Literature
1
and
Communications 4 combined course may well be the right course for you. Taught part-time, this course is suitable for students who wish to progress to higher level studies but do not wish to undertake the final examination associated with Higher English. For example, some colleges accept this as an alternative to Higher English
as an entry requirement for
teacher training courses
The course is also
designed to appeal to those students looking for more immediate commercial opportunities. The Communications 4 unit aims to help students produce and evaluate spoken and written communication with a practical bias, whereas Literature 1 offers an exploration of drama, prose and poetry.
Assessment
will be ongoing throughout the course and, unlike Higher English, there will be no final examination for either unit.
Students will be expected to discuss, watch performances of and make reasoned judgements about literary texts, plays, poems, novels and short stories (possibly chosen by the students themselves). The course will introduce the following areas: Present ideas and information Identify the concerns and purposes of varying types of texts Develop an understanding of literary devices and effects
Argyll College UHI Ltd is a Scottish Charity, SC 026685
Where will I study?
The course will be taught - one 2 hour session a week for 30 weeks - at your local centre. Students will also be expected to undertake around 2 hours self study each week in addition to the taught class. You will spend approximately two thirds of your time on Communications 4 and one third of your time on Literature 1.
What qualifications do I need to enrol on this course? Students will normally be expected to have achieved English at Level 5 (Intermediate 2) or to have undertaken the college’s Creative Writing unit.
How can I continue to further my studies? Together these two courses are accepted by a number of colleges and universities as an equivalent qualification to Higher English. They can thus serve as an entry qualification for a range of Higher National level and Degree courses.
