Why should I consider a PDA in Addiction Counselling?
Do you have experience within addiction services? Would you like to support that experience with an appropriate qualification? Do you want to study for a qualification which will allow you to study further in the field of addiction counselling? Would you like to develop the skills required to follow a career in addiction counselling? If yes, then this course may well be the right course for you. You may be a counsellor, care worker or project worker who wants to continue to develop their skills within a specialist area. You may be a nurse or social worker who wants to support your experience with an appropriate qualification. Or you may want to start developing the skills necessary to pursue a career in this very demanding field. The Personal Development award combines three individual unit areas, Understanding Addictive Behaviours, Working with Addictive Behaviours and Working with Substance Abuse. The course will allow students to acquire the knowledge and understanding necessary to support individuals living with an addiction. You will also experience and consider the very practical aspects of how you can deliver this support effectively.
The course will consider and explore the following areas: •
Identifying possible addictions
•
Theoretical models relating to addictive behaviour
•
Current treatment options
•
Current organisational services for addiction
•
The facilitation of an addiction group
•
The effects of substances that are recognised as leading to addiction
•
The effect of the substance misuse of one family member on the family unit
During the course students will also be expected to: •
Demonstrate personal learning
•
Demonstrate the ability to negotiate an addiction counselling contract
•
Exhibit the counselling skills necessary to work with clients experiencing substance addiction

Where will I study?
This part-time course – which will be taught during the evenings and on the occasional weekend – will be delivered at your local centre.
What qualifications do I need to enrol on this course? Potential students will be expected to have previous work experience in the field of Counselling. Students should must have completed Introduction to Counselling or Counselling Skills.
