Where will I study?
This full-time course will be taught at your local centre. Some elements of the course will be delivered in the college’s professional training kitchen, and some will be taught in the classroom. You will use an Internetbased portfolio system to collate evidence for your qualification.
What qualifications do I need to enrol on this course? Potential students require no specific qualifications for this course. Students will be expected, however, to have a keen interest in working in the hospitality industry in either the kitchen, accommodation services or a food and beverage role.
Will I receive a recognised qualification? Yes, upon completing the course you will achieve a nationally recognised certificate at SCQF Level 4.
How can I continue to develop my skills? A natural next step for those students who wish to develop their skills further would be the SVQ Level 2 Hospitality Services course.
Why should I consider a Hospitality Services course? Do you want to study a course which will introduce the basic skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in the hospitality industry? Do you want to experience some of the many and varied skill areas within the industry – including accommodation services and food preparation and cooking - before pursuing your chosen discipline? Do you want to study for a nationally recognised qualification? If yes, then Hospitality Services SVQ Level 1 is the right course for you. Taught on a full-time basis, this course will offer an introduction to some of the many and varied areas within the hospitality industry. The course will be very practical in nature and will allow students many opportunities to acquire and develop skills in the kitchen, accommodation services and team working environments. You will spend one and a half days each week in college studying the skills required to work in the hospitality industry and two days will be spent working in a professional hospitality environment practicing and developing those learned skills.
The course will introduce the following required areas: • Maintain a safe, hygienic and secure working environment • Work effectively as part of a hospitality team • Maintain food safety when storing, preparing and cooking food You will also be able to study four additional units in the optional topic areas of Accommodation Services, Food and Beverage Service and Food Preparation and Cooking. The exact choice of units will be dependent upon the nature of your work placement.
